I just looked through my inbox and I feel very empty-chairs-and-empty-tables in this chilis tonight, so many messages from mutuals who deactivated (including someone i dated on here for three months) and a bunch of anons I never answered for some reason, and like, so much of my experience on here was deeply toxic but also I was using it to escape from things that were really hard too, AND YET I’m still nostalgic about it and miss those friendships. Even though I absolutely adore my friends now and those friendships are really healthy and positive. But also I really do think the thing I talked about with my therapist is true that I’m like, in a cycle going through different stages of my life while I’m in my current hibernation state, and I’m in the tumblr 2014-2016 phase right now

How to Throw a Festive Korean-Inspired Dinner Party

The designer Rejina Pyo moved to London from Seoul, South Korea, in 2008 to study fashion at Central Saint Martins, under the esteemed professor Louise Wilson. Not long after, she met her husband, the chef and cookbook author Jordan Bourke — and then, much to her parents’ dismay, she never moved back home. After graduating, Pyo joined the team of the London-based designer Roksanda Ilincic — with whom she shares an affinity for deeply saturated colors (taupe, ocher, plum) and fluid, oversize cuts — before starting her own eponymous line in 2014. Now known for its easy, elegant pieces such as puff-sleeved cotton dresses, relaxed trench coats in laminated wool and asymmetrically cinched linen suits, the brand has become a fixture on the London Fashion Week schedule. (The birth of Pyo’s son, Luka, in 2017 only further entrenched her in England.) Nevertheless, after 11 years away from her hometown, the designer revisits her Korean roots on a nearly daily basis, through food.

In 2016, Bourke and Pyo released an award-winning cookbook together. Titled “Our Korean Kitchen,” the collection of hearty recipes is an ode to authentic Korean cooking inspired by the dishes the couple eat at home with their son. In the label’s early days, the pair would stay with Pyo’s parents in Seoul for weeks at a time; Pyo would finalize accounts and production for her brand while Bourke, who would later go on to work alongside the Michelin-starred chef Skye Gyngell at the acclaimed Petersham Nurseries Cafe for three years, worked in the city’s restaurants. “He learned a lot from my mum because no one really cooks from recipe books — it’s all very intuitive,” says Pyo. “I’d just watch and learn by osmosis,” explains Bourke. “Food there is all about sharing, respect, kinship, togetherness. Even if you’re working, you’ll always make time to go out for dinner and eat together.”

To share their love of Korean food and celebrate the start of summer, the pair invited 40 friends, colleagues and collaborators to come together for a Korean feast in London on a balmy evening in June. Because their family home in north London is undergoing renovations, the couple held their dinner in the airy SoHo loft of Pyo’s friend Alex Eagle, the director of a small collection of luxury concept stores: Alex Eagle Studio on Lexington Street in London, and The Store X at SoHo House Berlin and SoHo Farmhouse in the Cotswolds. Eagle moved into the apartment, a former parking garage one block from Carnaby Street, four years ago and quickly transformed it into a white-walled oasis, decorated with many of the same furniture and design pieces she sells at her stores, along with a tightly honed edit of fashion and jewelry brands such as Lemaire and Sophie Buhai. Kids ran around the open-plan living space, dodging a blue Yves Klein Plexiglas coffee table and cherry wood Nakashima chairs, with bowls of white rice in hand. Meanwhile, guests including the British artist Phoebe Collings-James, the gallerist Antonia Marsh and the arts publisher and curator Lucy Kumara Moore — many of them dressed in Pyo’s artfully low-key designs — ate an array of Korean dishes prepared by Bourke. Piled high on what Eagle calls the captain’s table — a leather-topped mahogany piece salvaged from a 19th-century ship — the bowls and small plates were replenished through the night as guests grazed. Here, Pyo explains how to pull off a similarly effortless evening.

Don’t Stand on Ceremony

The key to making your guests feel at home is to drop the decorum, says Pyo. “When we have a dinner party at home,” says Bourke, “it’s all about abundance, celebration and relaxation. I hate place names and that feeling of everyone being polite when they all desperately want the last potato.” Bourke designed the menu accordingly, allowing for guests to stand or sit, chat, drink and graze continuously: The ubiquitous Korean fried chicken (which is first confited and then deep fried and drenched in a sweet and spicy gochujang chili sauce) was served deboned — unorthodox but ideal for devouring with one hand. Soft salmon cured in white miso (it’s sweeter) came in bite-size cubes like chewy Turkish Delight, topped with a wasabi crème fraîche. The couple also served japchae, a Korean dish of sweet potato glass noodles tossed with sautéed vegetables and toasted sesame oil — it was the first dish Pyo ever cooked her husband, which “won my heart,” he says — and cut the noodles short for easier scooping.

Experiment With Tradition

Pyo loves to rework a classic, in both her design studio and her kitchen. While the traditional Korean dish bibimbap — a medley of rice, sautéed vegetables and kimchi typically served in a hot stone dolsot bowl and topped with an egg — was present and correct, Bourke also served more unusual offerings such as tiger prawn tacos and fried kimchi Gruyère toasted sandwiches (for these, half the kimchi was fried until caramelization, the other left crisp and acidic). “Koreans love a Western take,” Bourke explains. “There are so many Italian restaurants there that mix kimchi through their spaghetti carbonara for that bit of acidity — the toasties would be a hit in Korea too.”

Choose Contrasting Flavors

Eagle turned to her team at The Store X to provide cocktails that would complement Bourke’s spicy menu. Tommy Tannock, The Store X’s head of food programming and events, chose Jinro Soju — a Korean spirit akin to vodka, made from rice, barley and tapioca — for a clean lemongrass slinger. “Then we needed some cooling elements to fend off the kimchi tang,” Tannock explained. He opted for a muddled cucumber gimlet with Hendrick’s Orbium gin and a Mai Tai made with smoky Oaxacan Pensador Mezcal — “the perfect foil for the fried chicken’s moreish gochujang bite,” he says.

Go for Multipurpose Decorations

Arranged across a table, in between stacks of roughly hewn Rustico Stoneware plates, were piles of fruit: glossy orange persimmons, crackle-skinned cantaloupes, fuzzy white peaches and dusty burgundy grapes, each of which was sliced and served for dessert, having performed double duty during dinner as a tableaux that recalled a 17th-century Dutch still life painting in a palette of marigold and russet. “To me, marigold colors are happiness,” Pyo says. Simone Gooch, the founder of the florist Fjura and a regular collaborator of Eagle’s, followed suit by sourcing butterscotch yellow John Howard dahlias from a grower in South Darenth, Kent. Looming at four feet tall, they stood in their own earth, in reclaimed glass fish tanks, among the food. The following weekend, Eagle replanted the flowers in the garden of her weekend house, a 200-year-old cottage in the village of Wootton in West Oxfordshire. “My flower bed has become a smorgasbord of plants from all our parties,” she says.

Dress Down

“I have never planned my outfit longer than a day in advance — it just depends on my mood that day. I want to be comfortable,” Pyo says. For this dinner, she wore a boxy shirt in crinkled violet satin over a black bandeau top and a lime-green asymmetric midlength skirt — a mix of pieces from her pre-fall and spring 2019 collections that looked part surf, part soiree. “It’s nice not to be strict,” she says. That same spirit pervades Pyo’s label. “Tonight is a testament to how it suits everyone,” Eagle says. “Her undone tomboy style is unpretentious, not overly seasonal or designed but always with a sense of fun and vibrancy.” The same could be said of Pyo’s hosting style.

On their most recent album, ‘Wake Up Call’, Billboard-topping Canadians Theory Of A Deadman showcased a new sound that fans weren’t used to. Rather than rehashing previous albums, they made the decision to go down an alternative route and try something a bit fresher. After five previous albums, this was a ballsy move, especially since 2014’s album ‘Savages’ was so well received. Also, the band name was abbreviated to Theory, kind of like how Red Hot Chili Peppers are sometimes referred to as Chili Peppers, but let’s be honest, in discussion, Theory Of A Deadman was always known as ‘Theory’, or if you were feeling lazy – TOAD. So, with a few major changes abound, it was heartening to see that the Theory faithful had got the memo and turned up in their droves to check out the new tunes as well as some older classics.

Kicking off the show are Toseland, and James Toseland must be knackered, but unless you had been watching him covering the MotoGP in Texas (or stalking him on Facebook) you would never have guessed that he had flown back home the previous day, just in time to get the band in the van and head to London for the first of three shows with Theory. His adrenaline must’ve been holding the jet lag at bay, as he was in fine form tonight and led the band through a short, but well received, set.

You could tell the Toseland fans in the crowd, they were the ones wearing biker jackets, and I mean proper biker jackets with Ducati or Kawasaki emblazoned everywhere. His previous career as a world champion motorcycle racer gave Toseland a legion of fans, and there were plenty in tonight to support Toseland – the band. He recognised a fair few on the front row and nodded towards each of them; one of the humblest frontmen that you are likely to encounter. The five piece rattled through an eight song set that was met with howls of appreciation from the many Toseland fans in attendance. ‘Puppet On A Chain’ is a thumping way to kick things off, and drummer Joe Yoshida made his presence felt as he battered his small kit into submission, proving that size ain’t everything! His partner in crime Roger Davis got his moment in the spotlight on the bass-heavy ‘Too Close To Call’, the pair making a formidable engine room team. The twin guitar attack from Zurab Melua and Ed Bramford helped give the songs a heavier feel live, and from my vantage point on the balcony, I spotted the front row exercising the neck muscles. Nice. Despite jet lag, James Toseland still managed to put in a hell of a shift and made sure that he reached everyone in the crowd. Sat at the keyboards for ‘Fingers Burned’ he played to the crowd, not at them, and constantly made eye contact with everyone within touching distance. A highly professional performance, but then again, what would you expect from a double world champion?

Theory have always had a sharp sense of humour within their songs, never taking themselves too seriously, so it’s no surprise that the opening song would be ‘Lowlife’. Everybody likes a bounce now and again, and ‘Lowlife’ has the crowd bouncing like Tigger. Those of us with dodgy knees choose instead to do the gentle head bob and marvel at the slide work from lead guitarist David Brenner. One of the catchiest songs ever to feature copious amounts of the F-bomb, and I wager more than one radio station got caught out by them. Same with ‘Blow’, great song with some of the most relevant lyrics ever. Listen to it in the background, and you might miss the wry observations on modern day, but hear it in a room full of like-minded individuals screaming them at the top of their lungs, and it’s hard not to smile. Especially the line about Kanye West being off his meds again (It seems Mr West blew up on Twitter again this very night for wearing a red baseball cap). Closing the opening trio is the song that the word “snowflake” was invented for – ‘Bitch Came Back’. Watching the crowd smiling and singing along, it’s clear that a lot of female fans recognised someone who the song could be about. The pair behind me especially seemed to think that it could have been about their friend, and for a few minutes it was like The Jeremy Kyle show. You don’t want to listen, but can’t stop yourself.

The aforementioned new album, ‘Wake Up Call’, is represented by a handful of tracks that highlight the path that the band took on album number six. The pop influences were always there, but usually behind some power chords and massive riffs, so ‘Echoes’ is not that much of a massive change. It’s instantly catchy and has the crowd singing along. Job done, really. ‘Rx (Medicate)’ is much darker, and the tale of the drug epidemic sweeping North America highlights another side to the band, as does the atmospheric ‘Straight Jacket’; modernised, but with an edge to them. ‘Edgy’ is the best description for the incredible cover version of the Chris Isaak classic ‘Wicked Game’. Beginning with Theory frontman Tyler Connolly on the keyboards, the song broods for a few minutes before the band crash in towards the end. The fun element to Theory usually means that you might overlook Connolly’s vocal prowess, but when it’s just him and the keyboards, you are made to pay attention. Hairs on the back of the neck standing up type of thing.

However, crowd are here to drink and have a good time, so as the set begins to near the finish line, Connolly introduces the next song by mentioning that he was pissed that his team hadn’t made the Stanley Cup hockey finals. He asks how many people were supposed to be working the following morning, then asks how many would be phoning in sick… yep, it can only be ‘Hate My Life’. One of Theory’s strongest points has been their ability to write songs that people can identify with and form a connection, one look at the crowd as Connolly sings “I still hate my job, my boss is a dick” followed by “So if you’re pissed like me, bitches, here’s what you gotta do… put your middle fingers up in the air, go on and say “Fuck you!“, and you realise that this one particularly resonates with everyone in attendance. It’s not an easy thing to do, make a song catchy, memorable, and easy to connect with at the same time, but these Canadians make it look simple.

The best thing about the gig is that it sent me back to revaluate ‘Wake Up Call’, an album that I foolishly discarded after a few listens. My mistake.

I wonder how many people actually phoned in sick the next morning?

Food, Coffee, More Coffee: Inside the Spending Habits of a Working Student

I don’t think my spending habits are too bad, but I do have my slip-ups. This year, I’ve been pretty good at keeping my spending in check, but we’ll see how that progresses/devolves as the holidays draw closer. I do know that, day to day, most of my money goes to food and coffee. Although I often eat at home — I love making breakfast and try to have either lunch or dinner at home every day too — it still has a way of adding up.

Also, I guess I should mention that I work at Man Repeller AND am finishing up my BFA at the School of Visual Arts, which means I require a good amount of coffee just to keep me alive and kickin’. It also means I’m trying to balance a budget that accommodates both work and school. On most Thursdays and Fridays, I’m home finishing up assignments, cleaning and generally relaxing (which helps me save), but this week was different, and my budget took a hit as a result. You’ll see what I mean. With that, here’s what I spent my money on this week.

Today, my friend Maria and I are taking a day trip to Storm King Art Center, wahoo! Before I leave, I run downstairs and redeem my free, medium-sized beverage from Think Coffee thanks to my loyalty points. (Funny story: My loyalty account is for some reason linked to my cousin’s phone number, so she gets all my receipts. Hi Jaime! She likes knowing how my week is going. Large coffees = rough week.)

There’s only one food option at Storm King so I get an above-average vegetarian chili and a decent chocolate chip cookie. After our shenanigans upstate, we part ways and I come home and make pasta for dinner because wowee, I am so hungry. At 9:45 p.m. I run (okay, fine, walk) to CVS and buy Tide Pods because I already committed to doing my laundry and, surprise!, had no detergent left.

I usually walk to work, but this morning I wake up late and can’t figure out what to wear (UGH) so I have to take the subway. I put $20 on my Metrocard for this trip plus future use. I study photography and primarily use film for my personal work, so I drop off a roll of film that I took yesterday at Storm King. Thankfully, I save a couple of dollars by just getting it processed and scanning it myself at school. My buddies at Two Hands bless my wallet and give me a discount on my coffee and don’t charge me for my 3 p.m. orange juice. I get home from work pretty late so I spend the rest of my night watching YouTube videos and eating leftover pasta. SO fun.

Another exciting day at work! Pretty sure I was still tired from my day trip to Storm King and finishing up all the props for the MR GIFT GUIDE (!!!!) so I had two coffees today. This is why I am good friends with the people at Two Hands: a minimum of two visits a day builds a strong relationship. Then, Madi tricks me into getting lunch with her at Sweetgreen, but then bails to By Chloe, so I am stuck eating yet another Harvest Bowl alone (add avocado, no cheese, swap almonds for pecans, tysm). After work, I have one too many alcoholic beverages and plenty of mini snacks at the MR Ralph Lauren event. I mistakenly think that means I’m set on dinner but, 30 minutes after, when I start scanning film at school, I feel hungry again.

When I finally get home, I whip up a gourmet meal (toast and butter) for dinner and then realize that I left MY ONLY USB CABLE in the office and so, while my phone is slowly dying , I decide to get one on Amazon. (Another funny story: I thought, “Hey, maybe I should buy an extra USB cable” while walking past the Apple store that evening on the way back from the event but didn’t buy it!)

Today the water is out on Mott St. (where the MR office is located) and so my beloved Two Hands is closed (honestly they just need to #sponsor me at this point), so I get a coffee from Cafe Grumpy instead. Good thing I have a loyalty card going there too! I also get more film processed, woohoo! I decide to go to Maman for lunch today because I just really need a sandwich. Then, Emily and I stay pretty late at work finishing up the gift guide but I still manage to make yet another bowl of pasta for dinner when I get home (I’m having a phase).

TWO HANDS IS STILL CLOSED BECAUSE THE WATER IS STILL OUT! Cafe Grumpy it is. I usually don’t work on Thursdays but we had to finish wrapping up the final gift guide shoot. I make it back home in time for some lunch before class so I whip myself up some eggs on toast and then head to school. I spend three hours talking about photographs with my thesis class and then have a nice dinner with my friends at Goemon Curry! (PSA: they have cutlery that looks like little rakes and shovels.) I head back to work for a little bit after that to finish up random bits and bobs and then come home and sleep like a baby for the next couple of hours….

….Before I wake up late for a shoot happening this morning, ACK! I didn’t have time for breakfast so I run to Irving Farm to redeem my free coffee and get a croissant. I didn’t have time for lunch before going to class so I grab a brownie and another coffee during break so my stomach stops making weird noises in class. Usually I don’t do anything on Fridays because I prefer to chill at home and eat MORE pasta but tonight is different because it’s my friend Margo’s birthday and we celebrate with beers! A friend and I have a pre-celebration dinner at Big Daddy’s which includes a very delicious veggie burger and sweet potato tots. 10/10 would recommend.

HAPPY SATURDAY! I spend the first half of the day at home cleaning my apartment and having lunch before going to Chillhouse for a manicure. Before heading in I wander around Soho and am, of course, hankering for a snack and so I, of course, go to Two Hands, because I gotta stay loyal. This is actually the first manicure I’ve ever gotten in New York since moving here 3.5 years ago. It was a very long and stressful week so I decided to treat myself to some pretty nails since I don’t think I will have to paint anything in awhile (fingers crossed) (don’t look at me Emily).

While in the area, I pop over to Top Hat and buy some presents for friends and myself because Christmas is near! And you know who likes gifts? Me. Also my friends! But mostly me. On my way home I make more exciting purchases at the supermarket. Grocery haul you say? NO PROBLEMO! I got bananas, sparkling water, pasta sauce, pasta and a bottle of blood orange juice and kombucha.

BAM! DONE! Money spent! Honestly this week has just been a documentation of how many times I go to Two Hands in a week and also how much coffee I consume, which isn’t usually this much, I promise. I actually don’t feel that bad about the money I spent because I had a great week and I did a couple of special things like go to Storm King and get a manicure, but I do want to keep working on my spending habits.

For now I’m just gonna sit back, relax, and wait for my mother to make a comment about how much caffeine I drink.

I caught this article by chance through my yahoo newsfeed. I think that this measure that David Grosso is proposing is both compassionate and would actually help the economy-both businesses and people- in the long-term.  I already accept that I am most likely going to have to do volunteering and get more education in order to meet my student loan goals by the year 2035 or sooner and this would make me the target audience completely outside of this D.C. proposal. However, for the D.C. residents who would benefit from this I do believe that it would actually do more good in the long-term and at least David Grosso is showing through his action the concern he has for student loan holders who are actually key to helping to contribute the economy and helping to contribute to social security and other taxes that are going to be essential in the future. It is common for people with student loans to be judged yet many people with student loans are also tax payers who are doing the best they can with finding and keeping gainful employment.

Obviously, I do not condone whatever drove Stephen Paddock to do what he did to many innocent people yet I am surprised that one motive is not being as widely discussed; what was Stephen Paddock’s social life, love life, and overall career life like from the time he was in his 30s andor even his 20s until 64 years of age. I say this because I noticed that he chose to kill so many people when they were having fun with their friends for family, was he wishing that he could be like some of the concert goers who have abundant family members andor friends surrounding him but instead of channeling that energy to get out there and meet people like other people do, you can pretty much get the picture. Additionally, I would also see if the law enforcement officials are comfortable interviewing Paddock’s family andor even at least one or both of  his exes andor in laws again to see if he was always rich in order to see if he felt the need to do what he did to both inflict revenge andor save face as it is human nature for even some family members to keep their distance emotionally if they are concerned about you possibly needing their help financially even if temporarily andor they would freely offer their help. I would also interview the in-laws andor any coworkers andor friends he knew in his 40s andor 50s to get an idea of how his social and love life was like without shaming anyone if they happen to tell a harsh truth about him (in order to get them to feel safe to open up about any hidden motives that may not be apparent to other people who may not have gotten to know him until Paddock was in his 50s/60s when he became wealthier). Additionally, I Stella Carrier have over 1500 dollars after taxes saved as of this writing and I have spiritually evolved from both my therapy and volunteering efforts that I have partook in since October 2017. I Stella Carrier have met many amazing male and female friends through my volunteer efforts and I have picked up many cross training skills that have made me a more versatile employee through my volunteer efforts. I Stella Carrier feel blessed to say that many of my volunteer coworkers and volunteer bosses like me. I recently went out to a Saturday day trip that was fun with some of my volunteer coworkers that was masterminded and organized as well as encouraged by the volunteer bosses. I Stella Carrier feel blessed to say that I now have over 50,000 dollars after taxes in my Bank of America and Sun Trust Savings Accounts. I Stella Carrier work in a year round/permanent job where I am more than appreciated and several of my customers, coworkers, managers, bosses etc. are more than satisfied with my job performance and commitment to my customer service. I Stella Carrier also feel blessed to say that I make at least 3000 dollars a month after taxes where I am able to share at least 200 to 400 dollars a month or more with my sweet and sexy husband Rusty Ridler. The marriage between my husband Rusty Ridler and I Stella Carrier continues to get more celestially closer and more spiritually blessed each day filled with lots of love and affection. As a matter of a fact, I Stella Carrier am getting into a paid for mazda 3 car that I successfully paid for with cash by November 1, 2020. Fortunately,many of my volunteer coworkers and coworkers from my paid for job have helped me with planning my husband Rusty Ridler’s birthday party as many of them are my friends at this point.

The one thing I have to pass on to you is to please make sure to go forward with your volunteer plans this Thursday in Washington D.C. as it is part of your overall life purpose and destiny.  You are wise to feel blessed for the volunteer ideas sent your way for College Park Maryland from well meaning supporters. However for now it is in your best interest to explore and go to volunteer activities that are outside of College Park Maryland and Hyattsville Maryland until at least the November 1 to November 8 2017 timeframe making sure to make time to volunteer at least once a week.
