#lore tidbit! the plot is not available for purchase#the building is only Technically abandoned. its still very much Owned private property!#actually ive been thinking about the Other side of this au. the people's perspective#cause in this au at least they all Knew the puppets were alive#many employees - especially the ones working 'closest' to the puppets - put up a huge fight when the show got canceled#but it was either Disassemble (kill) Them or Lock Them Away#and honestly? killing the neighbors would've been somewhat of a mercy#but the employees had no way of knowing just how Bad things would get#wh lights out au#scribble salad#and i mean. the building's electricity bill remains paid.#the employees that felt really bad kept it paid over the years - devoting a bit of their income each to it#thinking the puppets would a) be awake & b) be able to figure it out#yeah that's actually a lil fun tragic tidbit as well - if any of the puppets had found the breaker....#or found it and Messed with it a lil... flipped the right switch...#they would've gotten the lights back on no problem#but yeah anyway ive been Thinking about the employees' side of things a lot#might tie that in with act two. it'd make sense considering the shit that happens#well either they'd help the puppets out or they'd get shoved into one of the sinkholes by barnaby. so.#bc if we're talkin seriously here. the puppets are more likely to kill a person than worship them for any reason#they'd go full 'THREAT!! THREAT!! ELIMINATE THE THREAT!!! WE'RE NOT LOSING ANYONE ELSE!!!' mode

The steady beeping of hospital equipment was driving you insane. It had been hours now of nothing except the monotonous noise of your own heartbeat. If it didn’t shut up soon, you would claw your ears off. With a stiff body and an ache that penetrated down to your bones, you forced your body upright and pinched open the pulse monitor on your right hand.
You let out a relieved sigh as the equipment went silent and dropped yourself back onto the well-padded pillows behind you. The pulse monitor clattered to the floor on its long white cord and you settled down for a nap. The ache in your bones made you feel heavy, like lead. There was nothing quite like a well-deserved nap.
In mere seconds after you had closed your eyes, the equipment started acting up again, this time blaring one long, constant shriek. The surprise made your heart skip a beat, but your eyelids were too heavy to look and see what had happened. Then your heart kept skipping, and your throat tightened. You couldn’t breathe. Your chest burned. It wasn’t a heartbeat; it was a flatline.
You were dying.
The leaden feeling in your body doubled. Your muscles didn’t respond to trying to move and you couldn’t force your lungs to take in a breath. Footsteps pounded around you, incoherent shouts going in one ear and out the other. You were desperate for your paralyzed eyes to open. Was this what you’d have for the rest of your life? Nothing but darkness and unintelligible, mind-numbing noise, punctuated by electrical humming and the pain of a vice clamping itself again to your finger?
The flatline paused for a second. Your ears rang and you thought, for a moment, that you were safe, your heart was beating again. Instead, your stomach twisted and you realized you were losing feeling in your toes. No blood. No life. When the screech of your flatline came back again, it was louder, more piercing. The shrillness reminded you of screaming.
As soon as you remembered it, it was there – the same screaming as before, somewhere in your room, echoing from every corner. In the next pause of the flatline, it turned into a hoarse shriek and a plea. “No! Please!”
You couldn’t hear anything underneath it, no more overlapping voices, and your panic increased. Where were the doctors? Did they think you were gone? Help me!
Your eyes opened with a sudden snap, the droning of your alarm clock replacing the flatlining of the monitor.
As you stared at your ceiling, you panted for breath. Rationally, you knew, you had probably never stopped breathing, but in the panic of your nightmare, it felt like you’d been smothered. Terror powered your desperate gasps and convinced you that your feet and hands were numb, even as you could feel that one foot was poking out from the end of your blanket. After a long moment, you dared to move your arm, ready to scream if you weren’t dreaming after all and still couldn’t move. You turned your alarm off easily.
Soft rain pattered against the glass windows, creating shiny-looking streaks as droplets collected and streamed down the side of the building. It was much more soothing than the silence that usually reigned in Dr. Sweets’ office when he was waiting for you to talk. Maybe he should invest in one of those noise machines with rain as an option. You thought about making the suggestion, but knowing him, he would probably call you out on the procrastination, or deflection, or whatever else he wanted to call it.
You broke the silence. “I’m certain I can wait you out for the next…” You checked the clock. “Twenty-seven minutes.”
Dr. Sweets raised his eyebrows, still leaning his head on a closed fist, propped on the arm of his chair. “I’m equally certain I can recommend you remain on desk duty for the next…” He pretended to check his watch. “Twenty-seven weeks.”
You scowled.
Psychological clearance was a bureau mandate after something traumatic occurred during the course of the job. You’d been lucky enough not to need it up to this point, but after… that, you hadn’t been given a choice. Dr. Sweets was a highly qualified psychotherapist, and you were sure that he did amazing things to help a lot of people, but so far you felt neither amazed nor helped.
“Agent L/N, you went through something incredibly harrowing that you were very close to not walking away from.” The psychologist finally took his head off his fist and put his arm down in his lap. At least he’d taken the bait and you weren’t the one starting the discussion. “You were a half-inch or couple minutes from bleeding out.” He pinched his fingers to demonstrate as if you didn’t have a scar on your body that distance from your femoral artery. You’d never be able to forget what half an inch looked like.
“But I did walk away, and the person who did that to me is in prison for the rest of his life.” You crossed your legs, trying to look more comfortable than you felt. You weren’t sure how effective you were going to be at convincing a therapist that you didn’t need therapy, but it was worth the try.
He looked utterly unconvinced. Actually, the jerk looked like he knew exactly what you were trying for and thought it was cute that you thought you could trick him. “Justice, or even retribution, which it feels like you’re leaning towards, doesn’t erase a wrongdoing or its associated harm.”
“I didn’t erase it, I healed from it. I took medical leave, now I’m back.”
“Physically, you healed. It takes a lot longer to heal mentally from those kinds of wounds.”
“Does it?” You challenged.
“I think your nightmares speak for themselves,” Dr. Sweets said pointedly.
You glared at him, at a loss for a quick comeback. You knew you didn’t look like a million bucks, but you hadn’t thought it was that obvious you were losing sleep. If he knew, then the coworkers who spent a lot of time with you must know, too. Especially Neal – nothing got past him. Oh, that was embarrassing.
The nightmares had been recurring for weeks now. They had started once you had a return date to the office, but after actually resuming your work, they had increased in frequency and intensity. They weren’t identical, but they did all share some similarities: some fatal injury had you dying, alone, in the dark, like you almost had in real life. You never got to the point of actually dying in your dreams, you didn’t think, but you were just fine with that. They were bad enough as they were. Yes, they were a sign of trauma and anxiety. But if your mind didn’t heal itself from weeks safe at home, then you knew returning to normal as fast as possible was probably your best bet at getting over what had happened.
“I’m not your enemy here,” the therapist said to you more gently. You couldn’t say he was heartless, even if you didn’t enjoy the half-hour sessions where he tried to talk about your feelings whether you wanted to or not. “My goal is the same as yours. I want you back at work, safely, able to sleep through a night so you don’t jeopardize yourself or the people around you.”
You let out a deep sigh. “What do you want me to say?”
“I want you to tell me about the affect this has had on you.” Dr. Sweets encouraged, not for the first time. “You’ve accepted what happened. I can see that. But the next step is processing what it means for you, as an agent, as a person… maybe both.”
You felt helpless. What was that supposed to mean? You couldn’t very well tell him you were terrified your job was going to actually get you killed or cost more lives on your watch. When your employer paid your therapist’s bills, you couldn’t fully trust doctor-patient confidentiality. Maybe it was just paranoia, but you couldn’t bring yourself to risk it.
“I can’t sleep,” you admitted. Your tone sounded mournful. In a way, you were mourning for a time when you could sleep through the night and enjoy your days at work. It wasn’t like white-collar crime was your passion, but you did like puzzles, and you did like being around the people you worked with, especially a certain blue-eyed felon. “I keep having nightmares that I’m… injured, and I’m alone.”
“Your wire was jammed and your team didn’t hear you signal for backup.” Dr. Sweets talked slowly, patient and pragmatic as he validated your nightly anxieties. “You expected help, but they didn’t know to come.”
“They did come,” you said with a shrug. “It just… almost wasn’t in time. I know it wasn’t their fault.”
Your words about time felt glued into your ears. Yours had come really close to running out. And for what? Insurance fraud? No amount of money justified murder, and you likewise couldn’t put a price tag on a life. So why were you so eager to leap back into the same job that almost cost you yours?
It was something you had been mulling over since it happened. Your job was dangerous. You had always known that. You’d been shot at, been near explosives… your partner had been abducted by a murderer not that long ago, and your best friend had had guns in his face so often that, honestly, you’d lost count a while ago. Somehow it just hadn’t clicked, you supposed, that you could legitimately die. You were protected by the bureau and your body armor, until that wasn’t enough. Other agents had learned that lesson in a much harder way; being confronted with that was hard to simply get over.
Apparently, your use of the word “fault” led Dr. Sweets to talk to you about guilt and anger around the incident. You didn’t blame your partner or feel angry, except at the man who shot you, but you let him continue around your noncommittal, half-assed answers. You knew he at least suspected you were putting him on again, but you also knew you hadn’t given him much to work with. Then again, he didn’t call you on your bullshit replies, either, so you weren’t quite sure what he thought.
While Dr. Sweets had yet to approve you for field duty, there was still plenty to do at your desk. You pretended not to notice the itch in your legs to go somewhere while you kept yourself busy, preparing documents, performing research, helping delegate and manage case files, and topping off your team’s coffee whenever they got low. You had become even more of a desk jockey than Neal; at least he got to go out with Peter when given the green light. You missed outings with your partner, or really with any other agent.
Comparing yourself to a caged tiger was likely on the dramatic side, so you put it out of your mind and refused to feel sorry for yourself. You understood the protocols and the routines and they were for your benefit as much as the bureau’s. Besides, your team wasn’t treating you like you were fragile or demoted. They leaned on you to help just as much as they ever did, the assignment of duties just went a little differently.
You doodled a cat on your notepad during a meeting. Everyone had great ideas and you tossed in some ways you could contribute when you’d been quiet for a while. Peter’s proposed field op was going to go smoothly. Odds were high that any hiccups could be taken care of by Diana’s swift running of interference. Neal was raring to go and Jones was a little too excited to play the part of an intimidating brute, in your opinion, and Peter was appropriately apprehensive (someone ought to be, after what had happened to you).
“Let’s sleep on it,” Peter decided after looking out the window and seeing how low the sun had sunk. “If we’re all still in agreement in the morning, we’ll set the ball in motion.”
Jones graciously commented, “Good idea. We can all think on it.” He was probably the most cautious of all of you.
“Y/N?” Neal asked. You immediately looked up from your (admittedly lopsided) cat drawing. The forger was still in his chair, even while the others were pulling on their coats and blazers. “You’ve been quiet. Do you have any concerns?”
You shook your head, but not too quickly that it raised suspicion. You could get away with doodling – Peter often turned a blind eye to it; after several years, he’d developed a soft spot for you – but only if you were still paying attention and participating, so you didn’t want to give him a reason to suspect you weren’t.
Peter, Diana, and Jones all said their goodbyes. The two younger agents left the room, but Peter lingered at the doorway.
“Neal, do you want a ride?” He offered.
Neal looked from you to Peter, and then shook his head. “Thanks, but I’ll find my way. You don’t want to be late for roast,” he added when Peter looked unconvinced. After glancing at you, your partner decided that he really didn’t want to be late for roast and left without another look over his shoulder.
Now that you were alone, Neal softened his expression. “Seriously, Y/N, what’s going on?”
“I told you, I’m not worried. We’ve thought of just about everything we can predict.” You said with a straight face, pretending not to know that Neal wasn’t just talking about this specific case anymore.
He wasn’t having it. “Don’t lie to a conman, Y/N,” he chided you with a small, fond smile. “Come on. It’s not just today, you’ve been quiet ever since you came back. It’s not like you.” You raised an eyebrow and pursed your lips, uninterested in talking. Neal reached partway across the table for you but stopped there. It was an invitation but not a command. “I’m worried about you.”
The thing about your history with Neal was that it was a close one. You went from strangers when Peter got him out of Sing Sing to best friends within the span of two years. You trusted him more than you trusted just about anyone, and there hadn’t been a time when one of you needed the other and was turned away. He didn’t come to you when he was upset – seeking out reassurance and comfort was not Neal’s strength, because it involved professing vulnerability – but he never turned you away when you came to offer it, either. Now it seemed to be his turn to do the offering, as he had realized over the last few weeks that you weren’t going to ask.
You reached for his hand and silently sighed in relief at how solid and warm it was to the touch, so unlike the few dreams where you screamed and cried for someone to help and found yourself grasping at tricks that weren’t there. Neal turned his hand to hold yours and gave it a squeeze.
“It’s been so hard, Neal,” you told him reluctantly. “I have no idea how you do it. How you just walk away from all the close calls.”
Neal frowned a little. “I don’t just walk away,” he objected. “I have bad nights. I have bad days. Sometimes I have a whole bad week, or a few bad months.” You knew the latter was a reference to losing Kate, and you sympathetically gripped his hand tighter. “But, you know… there’s always something I can find to focus on instead, and after a while, the things go in the past. I let go.”
That advice was entirely unhelpful. “I’ve been trying to let go,” you said sourly. It wasn’t directed at him, exactly, but moreso at your brain, which was failing in its task of moving past what happened. “It’s not working. I can’t sleep. Sometimes I don’t think I can breathe.”
“It’s not easy,” Neal agreed, stroking the back of your hand with his thumb. It was an intimately affectionate gesture that comforted and eased the nerves beginning to bubble in your stomach. “Company helps. The reminder that I have backup, even when it doesn’t come right away. I’ve got Peter, Moz. You.” He met your eyes with a small smile and raised your hand to his lips, gently kissing your knuckles.
“Company?” You echoed uncertainly. If you were unconscious, how was company going to make a difference to what you dreamed about? Then you remembered what you had said to Dr. Sweets about your nightmares always ending with being alone. If you knew, on some level, that you weren’t alone, maybe you would feel safer. “Like, overnight?”
His expression didn’t change to give away whether you were right or wrong. Instead, he just asked, evenly, “Is that what you need?” The way he looked at you then, without judgment in his eyes, but with determination in the set of his jaw, you just knew that whatever you said you needed, Neal would move a mountain to give it to you.
“I’m not sure, but… maybe?” You hesitantly guessed. If it worked, it would be worth the awkwardness. Even just one night of solid sleep would do wonders for how you felt, and it wasn’t like it would be the first time you had stayed with Neal overnight. Long marathons on slow weekends, and the less pleasant nights after Kate’s death, meant he kept an extra toothbrush and a set of your pajamas in his penthouse.
“Okay,” he said right away with nothing but quiet matter-of-factness. It was so comforting to be proven right that you could rely on him to help you with what you needed. His tone just said, you need this, so we’re doing it, full-stop. You just hoped you were right, both so you could finally go eight hours without fearing for your life and so you weren’t inconveniencing him for no reason. “Let’s get dinner on the way. We don’t have to talk about it,” he quickly said, seeing your face. “Whatever you need.”
Everyone should have a friend like Neal, but everyone should find their own, because this one was all yours. If it weren’t for the table in the way, you would’ve launched yourself at him in a tight hug. As it was, you settled for a squeeze of his hand and a grin as wide as you could muster. “Dinner sounds great.”
The stickiness of your pants along your thigh made your hands shake, unable to bring yourself to look at your palms. You knew what you would see all over them. The fire lancing up your thigh told you what you already knew. So did the weakness in your body and the fog in your mind. It was done. The hourglass on the desk was trickling through the last of its sand. Moretti was nowhere to be seen. You couldn’t even die in the presence of a murderer.
There was screaming coming from another room. It was the desperate wail of another agent begging for their life. “No! Please!”
“No,” you mumbled, using all of your energy to turn your head to the doorway. He couldn’t… not now that you were down… you couldn’t even raise your voice to cry for help. You were completely helpless. You couldn’t save him.
Your chest burned with the effort of your heart, ironically helping you to bleed out faster. Your breaths came labored, and then they couldn’t come at all as your vision faded. The dark carpet blurred from a mass of pilled fibers into a solid navy sea. The pain in your leg was excruciating, it was all you could feel; the idea of feeling peace ever again slipping away.
Screaming. Banging. Footsteps. More screaming. Pounding. Shouting. It was all indistinguishable, a mess of men’s voices and loud gunshots. Then, you heard it. Just your name, barely audible above the rest, in a voice that made you strain to see past the blackness.
“Y/N!”
You’d give the rest of your precious seconds away just to see him one last time, just to know he was beside you and you weren’t alone.
“Y/N!”
Footsteps came closer and the pressure on your chest intensified. The blood loss made you dizzy and your body shook.
“Y/N!”
You jolted awake, eyes snapping open in time to see Neal leaning out of the way just in time to avoid your hand flying at his face. You processed slowly that his hands were on your shoulders – had he shaken you? – and it was still dark. You could barely see his face, but his figure was lit from behind by the lamp next to his bed. You could tell from his messy hair that he had been sleeping not long ago, and you felt awful for waking him up.
After cursing, you sat up and gripped the warm blanket on your lap tightly. “I’m sorry,” you said remorsefully, feeling like a fool. Not only hadn’t you been able to sleep through the night, but now you’d ruined his rest, too. You cussed again. “I really hoped being close… just not being at my apartment, alone…”
It had felt like a safe bet off to a good start. You had gotten dinner together near Gramercy Park, then watched a lighthearted movie before turning in for bed. Neal offered to let you take his mattress, but you didn’t want to put him out and you had slept over enough that he didn’t feel like a bad host for letting you insist on the sofa. You’d been out by ten, but now you could guess it had been less than four hours. Your heart was still racing, your leg still tense with an imagined pain.
“It’s okay,” Neal said, sounding unsettled. He kept his hands on your shoulders like he was keeping you grounded on the earth. “Don’t worry about it. It’s okay.”
Neal’s eyes must have already adjusted to the low light, because his aim was spot-on when he lifted a hand from your shoulder to cup your neck instead. His profile ducked and you felt his lips land on your forehead, checking your temperature, signalling forgiveness, and administering reassurance all at once. He rubbed his thumb across your jaw as he stood up straight, releasing you, and walked away around the couch.
You put your legs down in front of you and rubbed your face, exhausted mentally and physically. Helplessness made you want to cry. Time wasn’t healing. Sleeping pills just made it harder to wake up, letting the nightmares ravage your psyche for longer. Not even the proximity of someone you trusted and adored was enough to let go of the past.
The light in the kitchen came on, bright enough to illuminate the studio but far enough away not to be blinding. Neal came back to the couch holding a bottle of water and offered it to you before sitting down. He looked so adorable, still sleepy and with a bit of pink in the side of his face from sleeping with his arm under his pillow. You scolded yourself for even thinking about how cute he was when you were the one who had woken him up.
You sipped at the water. It was so nice and smooth on your throat. You felt fine, now that you were awake, but the vividness of your nightmares always left you feeling parched and you always expected swallowing to hurt as if you had strep. Neal leaned into the back of the couch and put his arm up along the cushions. You capped the water, bent your knees to pull your feet back up onto the furniture, and let yourself lean into his side. Neal dropped his arm softly on your shoulders, holding you in a tender sideways hug.
“I’m sorry,” you apologized again after a couple of minutes. You felt much better, much faster than you usually did, thanks to him, and if you were being fully honest, you were not ready for him to get up and go back to bed, but it wasn’t fair to ask him to stay up cuddling you at god-knows-what-time just because you were a wreck.
“I told you, it’s okay,” Neal said, his voice firm. If you apologized again, you figured he would start scolding you for it, so you let it go.
“I just – I should’ve expected this,” you said with frustration, feeling like you were confessing to knowingly bothering him. “I haven’t been able to sleep well in ages. I keep having these nightmares, I feel like I’m losing my mind.”
Neal was quiet for a few seconds, making sure you had said all you were inclined to. Then, knowingly, he asked, “This is about the Moretti case, isn’t it?”
“I can’t let it go,” you said with a whimper. “It won’t leave me alone. Every night, it’s a little bit different, but at its core it’s always the same.”
Neal’s voice cutting through the fog of your nightmare had been a saving grace, giving you peace even in your unconscious, but now that you were awake, you realized with clarity that his voice saying your name wasn’t the only voice you could make out. In fact, you always heard the same thing, every night, no matter what else changed.
“What’s the same, Y/N?” Neal asked you, trying to help. He stroked your upper arm with his open hand. You were already shaking your head. Neal could comfort you all he liked, but he couldn’t bring back the dead. In grief and shame, you turned your head and bent your neck to bury your face in his shoulder. Neal tilted his head so his cheek was resting gently on your hair. “Tell me, darling,” he coaxed in a whisper.
You felt like someone’s hands were wrapped around your throat, strangling your reply. “Agent Flynn,” you answered dryly, barely more than mouthing his name. “In every nightmare, I hear… I hear his last words. Begging Moretti not to take the shot.”
Neal was quiet for a long time, but never pushed you away. He held you closer when you started to shake, crying against him as quietly as you could manage. The artist rubbed your arm and periodically kissed your head, but he knew that there was nothing he could say to erase the horror of what you had heard or take away the guilt that you had survived because Moretti was distracted by taking out the other agent.
Moretti was part of a family gang, often in conflict with the Barellis, who, interestingly, paid a little deference to the white-collar division ever since you and Peter had recovered a stolen Book of Hours. The Morettis had no such connection or gratitude, so their response to the FBI sticking their nose into an embezzling scam was violent and bloody. Moretti shot you in the leg and intended to finish you off, but one of his own men had reported you came with someone. He left you to bleed out, and only a few rooms over, you had heard Flynn’s pleas – and the subsequent gunshot. Your team, wising up to the dead signal, arrived for a takedown before Moretti could make his way back to you, but it was too late for your teammate.
Neal shifted after what felt like forever, only to pull you closer to his chest and wrap both arms around you. You trembled in his embrace, but that just made him hold you closer, like you were delicate and breakable. When he next talked, his low voice was quivering, just like your body.
“I thought we lost you,” he said, cupping the back of your head in a gentle hand. He massaged his fingers into your scalp, even as he kept you cuddled in his lap. “I thought I lost you, Y/N. Two gunshots. I thought…” He struggled to find his words and you hiccuped, trying to stop crying. “I was the one who found you, and I was so scared I was too late.”
You sniffled and uncrossed your arms to melt against his chest and hug him tightly around his waist instead. “I didn’t know you…”
“We found him first, but you weren’t there and I needed to find you.” Neal now sounded equal parts frightened and furious. “If he had taken you away, I would’ve…” He shook his head and pressed his forehead to yours, as desperate to be close to you as you felt to be close to him. “I would’ve shattered. I can’t lose you, Y/N. I just can’t lose you, too.”
“I’m so glad I didn’t die,” you blurted, almost in a sob. You felt so safe with him, but now you knew for a fact that your own safety wasn’t what had been tormenting you. It was a nearly debilitating case of survivor’s guilt. “I just wish I hadn’t been the only one who survived.”
“No one wants that,” Neal promised you, untangling his hand from your hair and stroking it down instead. “I’m so sorry. I wish I could fix this and take it away, but all I can do is be here and hold you and tell you it’s going to be alright. It wasn’t your fault.”
You sniffed. Neal’s words were more of a comfort than you had thought they would be. They changed nothing about the situation, but… you weren’t alone. You hadn’t been alone since you met him. You just agonized that Flynn had been. “Neal, I can’t lose you, either. I love you, you’re… you’re who I’m going to heal for.” You had to find a way.
Neal seized your lips with his in a searing kiss. It wasn’t as sexy or patient as you may have imagined, but you gripped his shirt and gave as good as you got, and wow, the man gave verygood. It was a desperate kiss, needing to bring you together and reaffirm your life. To you, it was the seal of a promise that you wouldn’t let the past crush your spirit. When you could sleep through the night and had a handle on your post-traumatic stress… if he would just be patient, you would be his the way you wanted him to be yours.
He released you to breathe, eyes opening wide as if he only just realized what he had done. Before he could pull away, you pressed your forehead to his again, urging him to stay close. Your breaths mingled between you and you were sure you could feel his heart beating through his chest.
“I love you, too,” he said once he had caught his breath.

BRF Reading - 18th of May 2021
This is speculation only
Cards drawn 18th of May, 2021
Question: What are Meghan's finances like?
Tumblr media
Interpretation: Meghan is up to her ears in debt and still spending like there is no tomorrow.
Card One: King of Pentacles. This is the card of an earth sign person, particularly a Taurus, and here it represents both Hm the Queen and the BRF as a whole. The large gold coin the King holds in his hands represents the assets of the BRF. Pentacles in the element of earth, and like the earth the assets of the BRF are mainly fixed, not liquid (cash). They are in land and buildings and jewels and crown property and artwork and stuff like that, not cash in a bank account that you can take out and spend. The cash that does come in goes to paying staff and maintaining the properties, as well as for clothes and food and electricity bills and things like that.
What I get from this card is that Meghan has her eyes fixed on that gold coin - the collective wealth of the BRF - and she thinks 'That is mine. I am a royal. It belongs to me and I can spend as much as I want of it.' This is not true, of course, but it is what I am getting from the cards about how Meghan thinks. She honestly thinks she can spend as much as she wants and the BRF has to pay her debts because she is royal (in her mind) or married to a royal (the reality). When the BRF say No, you pay your own debts, Meghan will throw a massive tantrum and do everything she can to force them to pay her debts, because in her mind that is the way it should be.
Card Two: Nine of Cups. This is a card about contentment and satisfaction. It can also be a card about splurging, including buying luxurious items for the satisfaction they bring you. This is exactly what Meghan is doing. She is buying, buying, buying. Every time she is upset she goes on a spending spree to make herself feel better. What she buys is always expensive, as Meghan equates cost with value - the more it costs, the more value she places upon it.
The card shows Eros and Psyche reunited after their separation, with the goddess Aphrodite watching and blessing the couple. This shows the same thought patterns as card one - Meghan is united with a member of the BRF, and so the BRF (represented by Aphrodite) should bless her by paying all her debts and letting her spend as much as she wants. This is not going to happen, of course, but this is what Meghan thinks should happen.
Card Three: Temperance. A card about moderation, taking the middle road, living within your means. This is what Meghan should be doing, and instead she is not. She is intemperate, buying whatever she wants when she wants and refusing to show any restraint. The background of the card shows a rainbow, and Meghan thinks her current situation is like the the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. She has married a wealthy man and she is going to revel in his pot of gold. She has no intention of being prudent and living within her means.
If you look at the picture on the card, the goddess, Iris, pours nectar in an unending stream between her two cups. This is what Meghan expects - an unending stream of money. As the goddess Aphrodite on the Nine of Cups card has her back to the goddess Iris on the Temperance card, Meghan expects the BRF to turn their backs to any thought of Temperance in her spending and instead to give her all the money she wants.
Card Four: The Emperor. This is the card of the supreme ruler, the ultimate patriarchal father figure. In this spread it stands for Prince Charles. Meghan sees Prince Charles like she saw her own father - someone who will give her whatever she wants, regardless of the cost. As her father-in-law and a member of the BRF, he is the one who has to pay her debts and give her lots of money. If he refuses to do this (as he is going right now), she will pout and cry and throw tantrums until she gets her own way, just like a two year old does with their parents. If that doesn't work, she will turn nasty and reveal whatever she can to hurt him, again just like a two year old yelling "I don't like you!".
Unfortunately for Meghan, she is not two, and as an adult, actions have consequences. If you look at the card before this one, Temperance, you can see that the goddess on that card, Iris, is looking towards the Emperor. This says that the Emperor, Prince Charles, expects Meghan to exhibit temperance and to live within her means. He is not paying her debts from intemperate spending any longer.
Card Five: The Seven of Swords. This is a card of guile, deceit, and secrecy. It shows Orestes sneaking into the palace to murder his mother. This is Meghan's reaction to being told "No" in response to her demands for more money. She is going to try to 'murder' the BRF by revealing every horrible thing she can think about them, real or made up. She will do so in a sly and secretive manner, alluding to things and distorting truths so she can always claim to be 'innocent' when someone calls her to account for what she has said. In her mind, if the BRF will not give her the money she wants, then she has every right to destroy them, as they are denying her what is 'rightfully' hers. Once Orestes murders his mother, the crown will go to one of her sons, and Meghan thinks that once she destroys the rest of the BRF all the money and assets will go to her, to do with as she pleases.
Underlying Energy One: The Five of Cups. This is a card of loss, and in relation to finances it means financial loss. Meghan is in debt. Quite a bit of debt. If you look at the cups in the picture, four are knocked over, their contents spilt. Only one remains to nourish the person in the card. 4 out of five is 80% - if all of her assets together are 100%, then Meghan is 80% in debt, i.e. she would have to see 80% of her assets/worth to repay her debts. That is a serious amount of debt.
The card shows Psyche chasing after the fleeing form of her husband. This tells me that Meghan has been relying on family members to pay her debts, but they have either said no more (Charles, the BRF) or have no money left to give (Harry). Either way, they have escaped her grasp, and Meghan is left alone with her debts.
Underlying Energy Two: Nine of Swords. This is a card about being stressed, so stressed that you don't know where to turn. The card shows Orestes pursued by the Furies, who follow him wherever he goes and torment him, represented by the nine swords they are pointing at him. This shows the situation for Meghan. She can not escape her debt - where ever she goes, it follows her, demanding to be paid. Meghan is very stressed out by all of this as she can not find a way to evade her debt. She has to pay it and I don't think she has the money to do so. As she is so stressed, she makes herself feel better by buying even more expensive items (as per the Nine of Cups card, the card of emotional contentment).
Conclusion: Meghan is head over heels in debt, and it is stressing her out. She reacts to the stress by buying even more luxury items. She expects the BRF to pay all her debts and give her more money, as she views their assets as hers by right. The BRF in the form of Prince Charles have said No, live within your means. Guile, lies, secrecy and deception are the result, all with the aim of getting her own way. If she can't have the money by asking, she will take it by destroying the BRF, as in her mind once the family is destroyed all the assets will go to her.

A month ago, Republicans were insisting that they wouldn't "take the bait" on a big infrastructure proposal in two pieces, doing some of it that might get Republican support through regular order and the rest of it through budget reconciliation to avoid a GOP filibuster. "If this is what they decide to employ, it's a pretty cynical ploy to try and appeal to Republicans to vote for all that stuff, and then do reconciliation to do all the other hard stuff," Senate Minority Whip John Thune said at the time. "[I]f they decide to do that as a ploy to lure Republicans in to vote for the easy stuff and then do all that stuff, the controversial stuff through reconciliation, I don't think our guys are going take the bait on that," Thune added.
Fast forward a month and here's Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, on Fox News Sunday: "There is a core infrastructure bill that we could pass. […] So let's do it and leave the rest for another day and another fight." That would be an $800 billion in what they call "real" infrastructure and a separate one for all the stuff they're going to refuse to pass. Exactly what they weren't going to take the bait on last month.
Since then, however, polling for Biden's performance is "pretty damn good," as Kerry Eleveld wrote, the result of a COVID-19 vaccine rollout that has worked efficiently and quickly and a $2 trillion rescue plan that has the majority of Americans feeling, well, rescued. As of the beginning of this week, four national polls show Biden's approval rating above water. Support for his infrastructure plan specifically is high as well, at 56% approval in the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist survey.
So Republicans are working on their counterproposal to Biden's American Jobs Plan, which will fall somewhere between $600 and $800 billion and will contain the things they would support to pass through regular order. They reject the very popular corporate tax hike in Biden's plan and instead want to pay for the bill by—get this—punishing people who drive electric vehicles and by taking away any of the unspent state and local assistance they hated in the coronavirus relief bill to spend here.
They want to tax people who are trying to save the environment by driving electric- and hydrogen-powered vehicles like gas-powered cars for the wear and tear on highways. Biden has ruled out a gas tax hike in part because it is regressive, disproportionately hitting low-income and rural people who don't have access to public transportation and have to drive. That's sure going to go over well with businesses like Amazon, which is building an electric fleet and which has endorsed the proposed corporate tax hike in Biden's plan. Republicans once again are completely missing the mark on this.
There are 10 Republicans, led by West Virginia's Shelley Moore Capito, on the effort. They say their proposal could come as early as the end of this week. Capito claims that "lines of communications are open" between Republican senators and they will likely "settle on a conceptual sort of idea" for their proposal this week. She's also endorsing the plan that Thune rejected last month: bipartisan cooperation on the stuff they can agree on and leaving the rest for Democrats to do by reconciliation.
"I'm already engaged with Senator Carper on the water bill and also on the highway bill so you know these engagements are not just—they've been ongoing, in some areas," Capito said, referencing the water infrastructure bill under consideration in the Environment and Public Works Committee, with Chair Tom Carper. "So hopefully we can use our committee process to work through that and do it the old fashioned way. Give and take," Capito said. Good luck with that. A $287 billion, five-year highway bill like she’s talking about passed unanimously out of committee in 2019, but died afterward because Republicans couldn't come up with a way to pay for it. Finding consensus among Republicans on a way to pay for this could be the largest obstacle to getting even the GOP behind this effort.
They are, however, paying lip service to getting Democratic support. Mississippi Republican Sen. Roger Wicker told reporters Tuesday that he wants a bill at $600 billion or less, but acknowledged: "If we want bipartisanship, it's on us to make a good faith effort." Less than $600 billion as a "good faith" counter to Biden's $2 trillion. Right.
Democrat Chris Coons, a close ally of Biden and a constant problem with his blue dog tendencies, is playing along. "Out of the whole, more than $2 trillion worth of things proposed in the jobs and infrastructure plan, that means we would take, let's say $800 billion of it out, move that is a bipartisan bill, partly paid for with fees. And then several weeks later passed by reconciliation, a Democrat-only bill that would do the rest of that agenda," Coons told reporters. Never mind getting the fee-based stuff passed by Democrats and in the House. And never mind Republicans like Wicker low-balling the package.
And never mind that Republicans, spearheaded by Lindsey Graham, are already plotting how they won't let Democrats pass anything by reconciliation. For now, though, Coons and his magical bipartisan unicorns aren't the story.
The story is that Republicans have a glimmer of an idea that they've been losing. Sure, Mitch McConnell might bluster on the floor, declaring, "It won't build back better. It'll build back never." But the thing Republican leadership said they absolutely wouldn't do last month, they're doing now. When the whole thing crumbles because 10 Republicans can't agree among themselves, much less get any of the remaining 40 on board, Democrats like Coons and Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema are going to get the clue. It's time to cut them out, and time to end the filibuster.

Chapter 1
For those of you searching for a little entertainment and a performance with a little je ne sais quoi. You could do worse than set your sights to a little building in the more bohemian quarter on the outskirts of Paris. Here you could rub shoulders with a Prince as easily as you could a street merchant as all were equal under the ruby lights.
As long as you paid your coin you were all set to be whisked away into a land of fantasy. Everything here was the stuff of dreams the only nightmares were beyond the gates on your journey home. It was a strong selling point and drew a lot of custom from the streets of modern Paris to explore the artistic world and indulge in pleasures without fear of judgement.
His feet once found the establishment by accident. Wandering around to stave off the boredom of yet another endless night. The books didn’t hold his attention, music was lost in the air and the mansion felt somehow empty even with the souls residing in it. This happened every few centuries, he had an itch that couldn’t be scratched and his feet took him wandering in search of a distraction. The distraction tonight was the same as the one he had discovered by chance a month ago.
The stage was lit up with a combination of harsh electric and gas. The tables and chairs around the room were tightly packed and none of them matched. Elegant dining chairs mixed with milking stools and benches. Tables of nothing more than upturned barrels or balanced planks on brick were the standard here. It was so haphazard and yet felt so warm and inviting with the melted candles pooling on them without containers. He couldn’t help but smile at the creativity of mortals and their desire to live life to the fullest no matter how few resources they had to achieve it.
Brushing his long coat neatly under him he took up a seat and a girl sauntered over to him. Black stockings clearly visible through the splits in her flowing skirt, with a tight white blouse that was straining under the pressure of her bosom.
“Something to drink Monsieur?” She asked with a smile, her eyes roaming from his head to the tips of his dress shoes.
“Oui merci.” He returned her smile and nodded. As she turned to go and retrieve a drink for him, he called out again. “Ah pardon Madame, would you be so kind as to tell me if the nightingale has done her turn?”
“You mean Evie? No Monsieur her performance is still to come.” She seemed to pause thinking of something for a moment before doubling back to his side to lean just a little too close, making sure to press herself against his shoulder as he leant in to whisper into his ear. “If you get tired of waiting for it, you could give me a call. I’d be happy to entertain you while you wait.”
“You honour me, Madame. I shall continue to wait though thank you.” He took her hand and brushed a kiss to the back of it his golden eyes glowed and the woman walked away as if she was in a dream. She returned with a selection of bottles for him to choose from. One was the colour of deep emerald, another was brown. There was also a yellow and one with a rosy blush.
He had not really cared to learn much of the drink until he started coming here, even with a rather famous patron of the beverage being under his roof. Darker green seemed to mean a purer distillation. Yellow was aged, the rose was coloured with fruit and the brown was not made with the leaves and blooms but the roots of the wormwood. Among these discoveries, he also learned it had no real effect on him. Indicating the dark emerald bottle, he was presented with a small tray. On it was an absinthe spoon that looked like an ornate item from a palace, balanced on a glass with a small stem. There was also a bowl of roughly formed sugar cubes and a long spill.
Left alone, he noticed a few of the other men in the establishment glancing in his direction. A faint smile and inclination of his head seemed to send their eyes elsewhere as he balanced a sugar cube on the spoon and poured a dose of the liquid over it. Taking up the spill he lit the end from the candle on the table and then set light to the sugar. The flame flickered as the alcohol burned and the melting cube dripped slowly through the spoon dropping into the glass. He watched the flame dance in the reflection of the drink and the clear emerald liquid begin to change.
It was a popular drink and more commonly known as la fee Verte or the green fairy. It also had another name and one which he found himself almost preferring, the devil’s drink. There were other methods in enjoying this drink but the drama of fire and alcohol seemed to be prefered here. As the flame died with the last of the sugar falling, he took up the spoon and stirred the mixture just as the music and the lighting changed. He attended this place every day for a week while he worked out the schedules and knew this one act only performed on a few nights for about an hour at a time. He brought his glass to his lips the medicinal scent filling his nose as he took a sip. His eyes never leaving the stage for a second as the performer took their turn.
---
It was always like this. Her whole body turned to a boneless mess backstage as she waiting in the wings for her turn in the lights. Worrying if she was going to mess up and forget a line. That was to say nothing of the fear she would be so badly out of step with the other girls on stage, making a complete spectacle of herself before the next act performed. She checked and rechecked her stage make up in the long mirror propped against the wall. Ghost-like white skin with dark make up on her eyes and shockingly red lips. Under the lights it balanced out and from a distance it didn’t look bad, but up close? She actually hated how it looked like a painted death mask.
“Almost time Evie!” A cheerful voice called down from the rafters. She turned her head to look up and found a smiling youth a little younger than her, his hands busy operating different ropes that changed the lighting for the stage. She couldn’t speak and gave a weak smile back as she nodded and stepped to the edge. The light cut a hard line through the shadow and part of her really wished to stay hidden, but that wouldn’t do. She owed so many for her life and this was the only way she had to repay her debt.
The ice-white feathers and pale sky-blue fabric wrapped over her figure, revealing her curves but also denying complete exposure. It was a tantalising taste of erotism that kept a lot to the imagination. Small strips of glass beads gave an eye-catching gleam to the outfit in all the right places, just enough to be suggestive but still tastefully teasing. Other establishments had reputations for being far more provocative than this.
Actually, even here there were performers and people on staff that went much further. She was constantly referred to as the Little Princess backstage because she was never pressured to go further and the owner always met that kind of demand with firm disapproval. The name was not something intended as a slight, she was in fact well-loved among the performers. Each had time to shine and all were given equal billing, so the need for petty arguing and fighting was never something to plague this performing house. No performer here was ever asked to do something they hadn't already consented to, a policy that saw the rejected stars from elsewhere flocking to them for continued employment. She took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. This was her show, her performance and the Nightingale had to shine.
The two giant ostrich feather fans snapped open as she held one behind and in front and stepped out into the light. The music turned more up-tempo with a clearer beat. It was easier to follow even as the lights blinded her. Dust in the air mixed with smoke as it danced in the agitated air through the beams of light making the stage feel magical. The nerves she had in her stomach relaxed and she twitched her hands swaying in time with the music. Right now, in this moment, it was only her and the music.
A flick here, a flutter there, just enough to give a glimpse and tease of what the feathers hid from view. One remained in place as she gave a wide arc with her arm holding the other. Her eyes that had been mostly cast down now looked out into where the audience was. The tables close to the stage were lost to her it wasn’t until about halfway back into the room that she could make out some shapes. Focusing her eyes as best she could on one point, hoping it was enough before dropping them again.
Her fan dance continued even after the song finished, a paper wall appeared behind her. Slipping behind it as the other dancers hit the boards to join her. She dropped the fans and the second part of her act begun. Her voice found its volume in partial hiding and the wall became a shadow theatre of sorts allowing only a silhouette to be shown to the gathered crowd as she began her striptease.
---
Mesmerising. It was the only word he had that could describe the performance and also the only adjective he had left in his vocabulary to say how he had been affected by it. She was skilled in her art and the charming innocence of her captivated the audience easily. Each patron fell under her spell one by one and when she looked up her eyes seemed to lock with his. His drink sat half drunk as he moved to the side of the room and slipped into the wings.
Furniture, fabric, ornate household items that were intended for props and décor choices were piled high on either side of the narrow space. He was careful not to disturb them in his path through them all to locate the owner. He was a proud supporter of the arts and more than once supported it in various forms when financially the artist struggled. Will had been a beneficiary of such interest in the past and continued to this day, placing pen to paper and showcasing performances that shocked and amazed. When he expressed an interest before, he was informed the Nightingale was not for sale. Clearly there had been a misunderstanding and that was what he wished to sort out tonight.
Showgirls, performers and all manner of people milled about the crowded backstage area in various stages of undress. They were rushing to change clothes, getting ready for their next turn or in a couple of cases already combined in trysts. Yes, mortals really were a colourful and lively bunch. He still couldn't shift the notion that something didn’t sit exactly right with him and the idea that such an innocent should remain here without assistance. A flash of his friend came to mind and he could practically hear the other man calling him an interfering busybody. With a wry smile on his face, he knocked on some upturned crates and waited for a response from the man sitting in lamplight surrounded by stacks of papers that could only be described as a fire hazard.
“Yes?” A middle-aged man with slicked-back oiled hair snapped his head up at the noise. He had on a shirt with an open collar and a printed scrap of fabric tied around his neck in a poor attempt to imitate a cravat. The pattern was so faded with wear it was hard to make out even its colour. It had probably once been high-quality silk but it was little more than a rag now.
“Ah Pardon. I was hoping now might be a good time—” His smile was ignored and his words were cut short as the man briskly stood and grabbed his jacket from somewhere behind himself. The fraying hems telling the same tale of the worn-out quality as his tie.
“A good time Monsieur? A good time?” He was animated more than agitated as he pulled the jacket shut and buttoned the front. “I believe I have already told you that the little princess is not for sale.”
“I understand however I do believe we are at odds as to the meaning behind my offer.” Le Comte nodded in understanding. He had been right his offer before had clearly been misinterpreted.
“Well? What is it to be then? A fine gentleman such as yourself taking an interest in the entertainment of this place is nothing new. Neither is the interest in our Nightingale. But Monsieur,” The short man brushed blithely past Le Comte glancing over his shoulder. Le Comte followed behind gracefully avoiding the obstacles in his way while the owner almost collided with them all in turn. “Not one such person has managed to obtain that which they looked for and none have received my blessing to so much as talk to the girl.”
“You are very protective.” Le Comte’s voice was soft like that of an old friend showing approval.
“Naturally the child came to us as little more than a babe in rags, found her myself and raised her here. You might say she is something akin to a daughter too me. Whatever else happens here Sir is the business of the individual but I shall not see the child bothered with such things.” The man huffed as he grabbed a couple of the sandbag weights, moving them to the side revealing a crate of bottles. He reached out dragging them closer and began counting silently with moving lips.
“Admirable to be sure. We are in agreement on several things I see which would mean we should be able to reach an agreement if only you would give me the time of day to speak Monsieur.” Le Comte’s words were polite but held an edge to them that demanded attention.
“Very well, speak. I have duties that need tending too.” The owner sighed and straightened his back to look him directly in the eyes.
“I should like to offer my assistance financially in support of the young lady. I have no ill intentions and only a desire to see she be able to live comfortably in a lifestyle of her choosing without fear of the poor house or ill health taking her security.” Le Comte’s hushed tone rang clear as a bell the owner’s eyes widened as he gave an audible gasp.
“Y-you truly want nothing more than that?” The man stammered as his arrogance of earlier seemed to melt under the strength of those amber eyes looking at him. He prided himself of being able to spot a charlatan and there was nothing in the man reflected before him that told him his words were anything but true.
“That is correct.” Le Comte nodded and found himself wondering how he managed to maintain a stoic appearance when the man he had finally managed to reach an understanding with suddenly doubled over in a dramatic display of grovelling that would not look out of place in any number of reputable theatres.
“Monsieur I should offer you my deepest heartfelt apology I fear I not only did you a great wrong but also caused you great insult in the process of protecting the child.”
“Think nothing of it. Instead, I should consider the matter settled if you would accept my offer?” Le Comte allowed a small chuckle to escape him in order to break the tension. The owner recovered himself and the stern expression he wore earlier was replaced by a much more relaxed one.
“Such generosity. However, I might act as the child’s guardian but I also have no legal right to do so. If you would come with me, I believe the girl should have her say on this matter.” He began moving again checking every few steps he took that he was still to be followed as if expecting the generous man to evaporate.
“A splendid idea.”
---
The performance was over and she was now free to retire to her room. Unlike most of the performers who had other accommodations elsewhere, she was given the luxury of a private space. A gown had been handed to her as she stepped back into the shadows of the stage and she had gratefully accepted it pulling it tight over her exposed skin. The smile on her face didn't fall until she was safely inside her own room. Her door was nothing more than a heavy curtain but once it was dropped the noise from the other side faded a little and she let out a sigh.
She didn’t know when it had started to happen but she was getting increasingly more tired after every performance. The doctor had been called back several times after she collapsed in the past but nothing was done, except a suggestion of increasing her medicine and suggesting eating more food. She sat down at her dressing table and slumped over onto it. The cool surface on her forehead gave a little comfort as she felt her body shudder in a cold sweat. With a shaky hand, she pulled open the drawer and removed one of the vials. She turned it in her fingers against the lamplight, a milky white substance that looked like liquid moonlight.
After pulling the sealed cork from the glass she downed the mixture knowing it would remove the tremors from her body. When she regained a modicum of her former composure her vision stabilised and fell on the tray of food left for her on her chaise longue. She moved to stand, her legs feeling heavy as she dragged herself over to the tray and began to devour the offerings.
The first bite was all it took for her to abandon the cutlery and start taring through the cooked chicken and vegetables using nothing but her hands, finding that even then the food did not seem to go to her stomach fast enough to fill it.
A movement out the corner of her eye caught her attention and she saw herself reflected in her mirror. The appearance she had taken on with food covering her hands and face was like some sort of wild animal and suddenly the insatiable need to fill the void inside her was overridden by shock.
“What on earth am I doing?” Her voice came out in a pitiful confused cry.
She bolted over to her washbasin and poured fresh water from the jug into the bowl. Plunging her hands deep into the water she closed her eyes and visualised the fear and uncertainty melting away from her. Her fingers rubbed against her skin removing the remnants of food and brought water up to her face. The cold water running in cascades back into the bowl felt refreshing as the air she didn’t even realise she was missing returned to her lungs.
There was a knock outside and she could hear someone call her name.
“Evie? Are you in there Princess?”
“Y-yes!” She replied grabbing a hand towel to quickly wipe her hands and face.
“Is it safe to come in dear?” The voice was familiar and friendly but there was something about it that made her think it seemed more formal than usual.
“Sure.” Her answer was almost automatic and came before remembering the tray of food abandoned on the chaise. She scurried over and covered the tray with the towel in her hands moving it to a table next to her before the curtain to the room was drawn back.

Dust Volume 6, Number 7
Tumblr media
Stars Like Fleas
The summer rolls on in a very peculiar way, with masks and zoom calls and brief, furtive trips to the grocery and the growing realization that normal is months, if not years, away.  Even so, the music remains excellent. Thank god it’s downloadable and accessible even in these strange days we inhabit. Here writers including Bill Meyer, Jennifer Kelly, Jonathan Shaw, Ian Mathers, Justin Cober-Lake and Ray Garraty consider improvised drone, precocious alt.country, experimental banjo tunes, rap metal and jazz.  Enjoy.
75 Dollar Bill — Live at Café Oto (75 Dollar Bill’s Social Music series)
Live at Cafe OTO by 75 Dollar Bill
Before 75 Dollar Bill put out those widely revered LPs for Thin Wrist records, Che Chen and Rick Brown made a series of tapes. You could pick them up at shows, packaged in a clamshell case with a business card advertising their services. 2020 is a plague year, so it’s going to be a while before anyone hires them for another party or a parade, but this download-only release fulfills similar functions. It captures the band at a particular moment in time, and it gives you a chance to throw a few bucks their way. Do so and you probably won’t be sorry, because the late 2019 tour documented by Live at Café Oto was unique in 75 Dollar Bill’s history. Chen and Brown did the whole run of shows with double bassist Andrew Lafkas, but they also did nearly all of them without essential gear. It wasn’t until near the end, when they played in England, that Brown was reunited with the big wooden box that is his main percussive instrument. Spread across three sets, this three-hour long album shows how swell they sound when they’ve got a committed agent of swing adding his subtle shift to their Bo Diddley meets Mauritanian wedding music groove. If you know I Was Real, you’ll recognize many of these tunes, and you’ll likely appreciate the differences that 75 Dollar Bill works and reworks upon them.

Bandgang Lonnie Bands \ Bandgang Javar – The Scamily (TF Entertainment \ Empire)
youtube
After Bandgang broke up, Lonnie Bands made a successful solo career. His only misfortune, apart from a murder rap prosecutors tried to stick him with, was that he picked up a no-talent partner Javar. Here, surrounded by aggressive but undistinguished artists Mascoe and Paid Will, Lonnie hasn’t learned lesson. Thankfully, Javar makes his presence on The Scamily scarce, and the second half is basically Lonnie’s solo effort with some guests. As usual, Lonnie makes himself busy in illegal activities: drugs, scams, pimping, firearms. He neatly sums up his bad deeds on “Me Too”: “You on that bullshit? Me too.” The Scamily is not that focused as last year’s KOD but Lonnie, with his slick rhyming and catchy hooks, always reinvents a bad man’s lexicon.
Ray Garraty
Sammy Brue — Crash Test Kid (New West)
youtube
Sammy Brue is no longer quite the wunderkind he was when he released his first full-length at 15, but he is still quite impressive here on the follow-up, hitching the spit and fire and wordy angst of, say, Ezra Furman, to the downhome pyrotechnics of Bob Log III. “Teenage Mayhem” explodes with teenage aggression, building out a twitchy blues riff into a monumental rock chorus, while “Crash Test Kid,” is softer sonically, but just as unflinching in its narrative. “Skatepark Doomsday Blues” is epic and grandiose but carries it off, infusing an old man’s blues progressions with the eruptive feelings of young manhood. All the signs point towards Brue growing into his art. He’s already channeling raw emotion into sharp song structures and lyrics without sacrificing their force. It’s a drag getting old, but it doesn’t have to be a step back.

John Butcher — On Being Observed (Weight of Wax)
On Being Observed by John Butcher
English saxophonist John Butcher has a deep and diverse discography, much of it on CD. Since the standard of his playing is so high, and the settings and accompanists he selects so diverse, they’ve never been merely about documentation; you’d have to look hard to find a dud on the shelves. But as format preferences, economic shifts, and that damned virus turn everything upside down, Butcher has, like everyone else, found himself suddenly with plenty of time to comb through the hard drives and reassess the music stored there. And since CD manufacturing and distribution has been snarled up worldwide, what better time to transfer some of it straight to yours? On Being Observed comprises six solo performances recorded between 2000 and 2006, and you could not ask for a better introduction to what he does on his own. It features him in the studio, at a jazz festival, and in some unusual acoustic environments which afford a number of ways to understand what it means to read the room. Whether he’s playing to an audience or a 20 second delay in a dis-used gas storage facility, acoustically or amplified, using a soprano or tenor sax, Butcher’s tone is unmistakable, and his sense of how long to develop ideas and how to develop them is peerless.

Carling & Will — Soon Comes Night (self-released)
youtube
Carling & Will (banjo player Carling Berkhout and multi-instrumentalist William Seeders Mosheim) have spent the last few years working out new twists on old-time music. Their debut album Soon Comes Night takes another a step forward from their previous, more traditional sound. Much of the album relies on the interplay of banjo and electric guitar. The pair don't go for outre sounds, but Mosheim provides textures for Berkhout's banjo playing. “Lillie's Lullaby” offers a highlight, not only in its prettiness, but in its revelation of Berkhout's idiosyncracies as she shifts in and out of more typical patterns. The album in itself makes for a lovely collection of songs, but it has both the ups and downs of an act starting to find itself. Carling & Will have a distinct voice, and the more they work to develop that (probably by letting Berkhout get odder and Mosheim explore his voicings a little), the more impressive they'll become. If the pair decides to just focus on smaller updates to mountain music, they've already shown a worthy artistry in that.

 Cloud Rat — “Faster” (Self-released)
Faster by Cloud Rat
Like a lot of us, the folks in Cloud Rat have been cooped up behind walls, watching the world burn. But that hasn’t stopped them from making some terrific music. This new track, “Faster,” has been posted to Bandcamp as a benefit for Black Lives Matter-aligned organizations. The song is somewhat in the mode of their most recent EP, Do Not Let Me off the Cliff (2019). That record traded in the band’s characteristic grindpunk intensities for some weirdo experiments in dreampop, noise and gauzy gothic nightmare soundtracks. “Faster” isn’t quite as far out there, and longtime listeners of the band will recognize some of the textures of tracks like “Moksha,” “Raccoon” and “Luminescent Cellar.” The song starts and ends with some lovely acoustic finger-picking by guest musician Andy Gibbs of Thou. In between, there are clean vocals by Madison Marshall that border on the ethereal, and electric riffs that build and build toward majestic heights. Good cause, great tune.

Drakeo the Ruler – Thank You for Using GTL (Stinc Team)
youtube
Recorded through a phone line from prison, with beats later provided by JoogSZN, Thank You For Using GTL right after its release was named best prison album since Penitentiary Chances, by now classic joint effort by C-Murder (still incarcerated) and Boosie Badazz (now free). It was too strong a claim to be true. On that duo’s album you can hear a sense of doom hanging over them. When all hope is lost, there is only a prayer, and even that can get lost on its way to God. There was no tomorrow. Drakeo the Ruler, on the other hand, raps like there is tomorrow. Even rough sound of voice recording and “This call is being recorded” tags are more like a necessary sound effect and a gimmick rather than an effect of reality (he couldn’t do it any other way). Strip this tape of all these effects, and you end up with an ordinary rap album, exactly like others released by dozens every week. Maybe there is no reason to thank GTL. It did us a disservice.

Holy Hive — Float Back to You (Big Crown)
youtube
These super laid back funk soul cuts stay well inside the pocket, except when they veer unexpectedly into indie-folk. The funk parts come from one-time Dap King Homer Steinweiss, whose loose but transcendent way with a groove can be best heard on “Hypnosis.” Paul Spring, the singer, brings in the psychedelic falsetto, more Justin Vernon than Curtis Mayfield, but still radiant and chilling. The title track plays like a lost 78 soul classic, Spring’s mournful melody wafting skyward as big loopy bass notes and splayed jazz guitar chords drop into a slink and strut of snare drum. That’s maybe what you’d expect from Steinweiss’ Brooklyn soul revivalist resume, but elsewhere, there are surprises. “Red Is the Rose” sounds like Tunng, all space-bopped folk magic and electro-pinging drums, and “Be Thou By My Side” is lattice-picked folk without the slightest hint of syncopation. Both sides of Holy Hive have their sweetness, but only the funk stuff buries a stinger.

Dustin Laurenzi’s Snaketime — Behold (Astral Spirits)
Behold by Dustin Laurenzi
Here’s an irony for you. Composer Louis Hardin, whose habit of dressing up like a Viking and hawking his wares on the streets of mid-20th century NYC turned him into a bona fide attraction, may have conversed with jazz musicians, and shared a record label or two with them. But he didn’t really like jazz. Nonetheless, jazz musicians liked his music back, and they still do. The melodies are graceful, but malleable, and the Bach-meets-powwow rhythms have plenty of productive implications for a percussionist willing to work between the lines. After years of study Chicago-based tenor saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi formed Snaketime, a project named after one of the composer’s rhythmic notions, that turned seven of his compatriots loose upon the Moondog book. Maybe loose isn’t quite the right word, since Laurenzi’s arrangements show deep respect for the original melodies and their exotic vibe. But there’s not a lot of music that can’t be made a bit better when you ask bass clarinetist Jason Stein to improvise from its foundations. This half-hour long tape adds four tunes to the seven on last year’s excellent LP Snaketime: The Music of Moondog, and any one of them could have made the cut if Laurenzi had been given enough rope to make a it a double album in the first place.

 MachineGum — Conduit (Frenchkiss)
Like its Pepto-Bismol-pink cover, these songs seem a bit over-sweet and undernourishing at first, but damned if their synth and disco and art-rock grooves didn’t start to catch on after a few listens. The project, launched in New York City with the mysterious appearance of pink gum machines, is not what you’d expect from a Strokes offshoot, but give Fabrizio Moretti credit for branching out. Here tight, “O Please”’s sleek, wah-wah’d guitars and fat-fingered bass throws off a funk shimmy, but soft, dream-y choruses add an element of electro-pop introspection. “Act of Contrition,” by contrast, swells and swirls with gothy new wave drama, but also vibrates with indie earnestness; it’s like the National playing a New Order cover. If you’d told me a month ago, that I’d be enjoying a super clean, super precise synth-dance album by a member of the Strokes, I’d have laughed, but here we are.

 Phosphene — Lotus Eaters (Self-Release)
Lotus Eaters by Phosphene
Portland’s Phosphene drifts and drones in a satisfying vintage 4AD-ish way, the serene vocals of Rachel Frankel wafting out over intricate tangles of shoe-gazey guitars as Matthew Hemmerich pounds out motorik rhythms on the kit. This album, the band’s second, was written in the turbulent aftermath of the 2016 election, but it exudes a murky calm. In “Carousel,” for example, Frankel sings about how “everyone gets lost in their own power,” but the temperature remains cool, dream-like, lit by arcs of guitar sound and undergirded by a thudding mantra of bass (Kevin Kaw). The two singles run closest to pop. Bright, upbeat “Cocoon” is spiked with Spoon-ish piano chords, while “The Wave” damn near bubbles with girl pop exuberance. I can see why they’re leaning on those cuts, but I like the cloudy radiance of “Seven Ways,” the morose moods of “The Body” better.

Sara Schoenbeck / Wayne Horvitz — Cell Walk (Songlines)
Cell Walk by Wayne Horvitz/Sara Schoenbeck
Bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and pianist Wayne Horvitz built to their first duo release slowly. They've been playing together since the previous decade in Horvitz's Gravitas Quartet, working together in various styles. The bassoon doesn't necessarily lend itself to jazz, but Schoenbeck's experience with artists like Roscoe Mitchell and Anthony Braxton — as well as in various orchestras and symphonies — has revealed her fluency in different languages. Horvitz and Schoenbeck develop that approach on Cell Walk, mixing composed and improvised tracks, moving from jazz to classical and back again, happily residing in a new music space. The pair's chamber background comes to the fore more than anything else, but the artists' experimental ideas and Horvitz's occasional electronics keep the duo moving forward. The album mostly stays cool, although a few tempo shifts and Schoenbeck's varied tone create unexpected energy any time the disc starts to settle. Schoenbeck and Horvitz fill an unlikely niche, but they also make a good case for expanding it.

R.E. Seraphin — Tiny Shapes (Paisley Shirt)
Tiny Shapes by R.E. Seraphin
Ray Seraphin makes sweet, sharp songs out of guitar jangle and whispers that seem to nestle right in your ear. His first cassette under his own name after a stint in the slightly more abrasive Talkies kicks up a power pop dust and haze a la Luna or, more recently, Plates of Cake. Like these bands, however, he envelops smart, coiling melodies and wild spiralling guitar hijinks in daydreaming inchoate jangles. In “Streetlight,” Seraphin vamps and caroms in spike-y mid-temperature anthemry, crooning “And I won’t feel a thing,” and indeed there’s a misty, nostalgic remove around most of this album’s emotional content. Yet there’s also a classic pop shape that can’t quite be obscured by muttered, offhand delivery. “Fortuna” is the best bit, to my ears, a summer radio megahit heard from several rooms away, bittersweet and slipping away even as it plays.

Stars Like Fleas — DWARS Session: Live on Radio VPRO (Amsterdam) (self released)
DWARS Session: Live on Radio VPRO (Amsterdam) by Stars Like Fleas
New York collective Stars Like Fleas are still gone, but the tracers and streamers left in the air by their passing continue to be entrancing. Whatever collapsed in the wake of their work on the follow up to their epochal LP The Ken Burns Effect can perhaps be glimpsed a little in the bulk of this first (and hopefully not last) release from what they describe as “a huge archive of live and session material.” As the title indicates, six of the 11 tracks here come from a radio session they did during their final tour (coming apart and leaving the final album unfinished upon their return to America). Along with a couple of Ken Burns highlights that session is all new material and it is as rich as anything they released during their lifetime. The collection is rounded out with some brief improvisations and another track intended for the final album, the 7” single “End Times”, and a wonderful performance of “Falstaff” from a Toronto show. Perversely and beautifully enough, the result is not only a must listen for fans of the group, it makes an excellent introduction for anyone who missed them the first time. Bring on the archives!

 Thecodontion — Supercontinent (I, Voidhanger)
Supercontinent by Thecodontion
A death metal band entirely devoted to songs about ancient, paleolithic lifeforms and geological history? It’s not the most harebrained musical concept you may have heard — it even makes a sort of sense. What better musical genre to address such massive, atavistic and lumbering forms? Supercontinent is the Italian duo’s first LP, following 2019’s Jurassic EP. As its title suggests, this new Thecodontion record goes way, way back, to primal landforms, before continental drift assembled the earthball’s map into its current shape. Appropriately, the longest track on Supercontinent is “Pangaea,” named for the unimaginably huge late Paleozoic landmass. Thecodontion’s featured instrument is Giuseppe D’Adiutorio’s bass, which he variously thrums, hammers and shreds. He gets some pretty amazing sounds out of it, sometimes producing the soaring, moaning, keening sounds that Greg Lake coaxed out of his bass on the early King Crimson recordings. The proggy reference is pointed; Thecodontion’s high concept project smacks of prog’s grandiosity. But where prog shoots for the heavens, Thecodontion goes bone hunting. It’s interesting work.

Various Artists — Building A Better Reality: A Benefit Compilation (JMY)
Building A Better Reality : A Benefit Compilation by Various Artists
As Bandcamp’s choice to waive its portion of transaction proceeds in favor or certain needs and causes has evolved from an occasional to a monthly event, releases have started to appear which take advantage of both the event and the rapidity of production when no physical objects are being produced. George Floyd died under a policeman’s knee on May 25; this compilation was released just 24 days later, on Juneteenth. Brent Gutzeit of TV Pow secured 106 contributions from friends, friends of friends, and customers of friends — and that’s just the parties that this writer recognizes. They range in length from Kendraplex’s 58 seconds of metallic shredding to Joshua Abrams’ half hour of mournful clarinet and cathartic double bass. You’ll find acoustic protest music, swinging jazz, harsh noise, hip-hop, and a sound collage that includes sounds of protest and mourning. The participants include Simon Joyner, Jsun Borne, I Kong Kult, Jesse Goin, Chris Brokaw, AZITA, Keith Fullerton Whitman, and the Jeb Bishop Trio, along with many, many more. Have I listened to them all yet? Of course not! But the thing with a set like this is that you don’t need to. Put it into your shuffle play and it’ll yield surprises for years to come. Income goes to Black Lives Matter, NAACP Legal Defense Fund. and the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Michael Vincent Waller — A Song (Longform Editions)
A Song by Michael Vincent Waller
At first listen, you might not guess that composer Michael Vincent Waller’s new EP/song A Song is an improvised piece, and as the surrounding material on Bandcamp makes clear, that’s kind of part of the point. Composition vs. improvisation is the kind of duality where both sides are never really distinct, and Waller is both interested in the history of composers improvising and (possibly naturally) improvises in a way that’s not a million miles away from his compositions. Which also means that just on that first listen the 21 minutes of solo piano found here are frequently beautiful, whether patiently probing a set of arpeggios or momentarily going somewhere a bit darker and deeper near the end. Whether considered as work done around or between more composed ones or in its own right, A Song makes for both a fine follow up to Waller’s 2019 collection Moments and a brief thesis on the always permeable boundary between two methods of creation.

Along the road behind Dala hera where water collects after a short downfall is where Herod was buried and john body while at where palmers hotel family lived and thats the reason why so i know was where Goliath and King David was buried, in fact when u r there, kinda, if u look down, the earth crust seems to divide into 2.
Aluminum foil, wires or plates as sufuria when placed in dough makes double door fridges, automated vendor machines or milk processing equipment and storage.
At Night when sleeping u see the spot of green-light as in ya dreams to tell ya that its green-man who told these white-men per country how gadgets are made and some writings we love are by them as well as song given to them to do it in their own way.
The door of submarine described below should not be on a protruding end/side as a house veranda or balcony but like a small partition done inside with its own door so if 1 from outside don't see an extension but just as a cylinder in the link below which can be made into a submarine
http://around-us-facts.blogspot.com/2013/04/why-tanker-trucks-are-made-cylindrical.html
Emery asking delanu “Ule dem mwenye kepi anamtaka, tayari ameshampatia kitu amemeza au la asha“ Babo Mtu wangu, nikujikakamua tu kisabuni while kebi says as he gets into the conversation, in Broken luo “An adong’o ne blina, kedo kal pidho thuol apidho manda mond kiko-okomplain kaka okomplain sani ne home girls ne eti she is contented but not satisfied“
Adwalo mochanda gi magdalin, to gitamle miya golo na gimolo mondo aswo gi koyo ni, Kebi molocha was heard complaining.
How machines or gadgets as equipment should be priced, measure 30% weight of the above which is the minimum high quality placed dough used b4 cold sewer water is hurled synonymous with some fridges, pick ups or the lighting up garbage Lory where cut other color glass pieces is place on the dough above and boom that machine formed. The price should be 30% weight of that machine translate it to wheat flour price of that 30% used to make that very machine and multiply by 100 as 100 x while the multiplied times is the profit, the hard task derived from making such as the lost sheep parable cements the truth. If dough worth 1 buck was used let the gadget be 100 bucks period cause they are just made. Pick ups are also made with maize cobs as eggs, i mean placed in different styles, Christ with division to bring out the reality of what he meant or signaled. Beyond 100 times can take ya too hell as u see hell door being lowered, no kidding jo, its not guess work but pure truth bro.
With every gadget u can use egg as the being placed on the dough, with double door fridges u place 2 standing on the tip, king of the jew to bring out another version reality, cookers u place it like sleeping on the other side, stereos u cut the boiled egg into pieces as well as Tv, with drones u place them in circles with big airplane u place it in a rectangular form with choppers in square form, u can try with any shape placing the egg on dough and after partaking mwarubaine/neem leaves with meditation u visualize the gadget that can be made using such pattern.
If u were to be paid 5% of the total cost of every gadget made using Ae technology or the no fuel generator theorem, then in many nations which has bought from like china Alibaba or Italy Linz generator and more have sold much pieces but why haven’t u been paid or taken them to court esp those manufacturing countries described in the following tumblr of this a/c. Stop dude, look 4 other ways to hustle esp coast province blooded fellows such as many luyas, dont expect water out of Euphobia tree but white Gum as dont look 4 the dead among the living with the Christ tomb, free things locators yet with ya money they want ya to join their things yet when u got none, u dont see them around or go in circles giving ya silly defaming names, as join and dont do this, eat corpse. Corpse can save ya ass, as dont make ya cleaver 4 such explained, it was just the German gimmick to delude ya to destroy ya mind further.
They are coming up with simbapay to allow u get many a/cs like with African phone lines so as to withdraw much from 2goinvoice since they got the software. They have been blocked in dubious ways and cant move on so resort to daytime lies as seen dubious ways. Let it be 1 or 2 line per person and i know if that is done many company wanna come in so they got other many options to open from to get many lines to do the same just as with Pay Tv decoders per countries. Britain u r digging ya own grave and sitting on a tickling time bomb. Click the link below 4 more

They get into submarines with 2 doors to get into the inside like the 1st door if u open u get with water but still inside there their is a water pump that the crew sitch it one to let out the very water that got in with you out, which if has gotten out the space remain free with you just inside b4 u open the 2nd door that gets into the inside of the real drone minus the water that got with ya as explained above. Submarines are just airtight heavy wall drones that instead of cold air being blown from below the gas cylinder to take it up, the reverse is done on the top of the siren gas cylinder to take it down the water b4 another cold air blown from below of the same magnitude as the 1 blown from above to keep it at the same level in water, the same technology as well applies to airplane in air as another cold air blow from behind the siren gas cylinder to keep it moving ahead. To negotiate a corner or a U-turn cold air blown from the tip or the end most of the cylinder from beside and to get back cold air blown from the rear part of the cylinder and thats as well the rocket, drone, submarine or chopper science. Weed parable, Beatitude or little kids, with Christ and lost coin parable to bring reality of the above. Click the link below to get a glimpse of submarine and inside ya air travel u can opt 4 one tied on a parachute once the fall develops an hitch to fall u get out while inside the drone with the parachute described above b4 u open it to make u land on the sea then u start ya journey.

Buy even small of the linz No fuel generator in the link bellow which is more cheap the the protruding end make a gear on it like with mountain bike chain system to rotate the other gear slow to rotate the wind turbine so u can use it even to power the whole school or 5 star hotel as it got much watts rather than placing the turbine on poles creating bad name on ya side as u don’t build the country as pay electric bill something which is cheap. Bones of animals in dough or ice cubes placed in different patterns or styles make as well office or home appliances, furniture or small hand driven or operated machines like grinders or drills. Barafu as women with Lazarus comes handy to cement de truth. With Egg u use peeled off egg like with the explanation below
Double door fridge made with 2 boiled egg place standing next to each other on the specified dough. Africans as Kenyans where have u reached as well as Negros, Minafika wapi with frustrating kebi and u have been warned slogan after being told the money making online gimmicks. Lake Victoria can be reduced via from below the earth crust dig hole to make some water flow out until its Kenya part reduced completely to be out cause the Negros are eye this part as it of leisure they place yacht and speed boat on it after all has been made like the innovation of E-engines which uses no power, so they feel good as also the Hindu left so they can get to another country if they commit crime as opposed to their country deep lakes with high security features of committing crimes.
They want cities in the E-African regions to have many people, as many banks and many cheque cashing centers as hotels and bureau de changes so they being built close to the lake to enable sweet escape as now they have known how to make submarines like with Tz choppers, they rob and not long b4 the city police alerted they jump into the lake or seas like with Malindi, Dar es salam, kilifi, mogadishu and mombasa to the submarines and get out at lonely places just the same with how they were fishing b4 Lake Victoria get in points were fenced shipping the fish to Europe and America markets via the underground fissures described in below following tumblr a/c

Now their is 1 loophole left, they can steal water at night or in lonely compound and place them in trucks like in the link below and organize per houses as they want to stay afloat to buy the flat septic tanks to store the above water then u minimize ya house water intake by half as half they provide, to use the money gotten from many households of such deals to put like E-buses, vans, taxi on the road to reap huge profits to buy others to still put a swag that they are blessed. Its done in a half way mentioned above to remove all doubt that were are u getting ya money but to give another sense u have lowered ya water use. The kisii are eying on this to capitalize it to stay afloat like explained above. The link below shows how many tanks u can use as calculated by your monthly bill which show how many cubic/m2 u r using, if more they can even place many under ya house ceiling to meet the same

Truth of the day
How machines or gadgets as equipment should be priced, measure 30% weight of the above which is the minimum high quality placed dough used b4 cold sewer water is hurled synonymous with some fridges, pick ups or the lighting up garbage Lory where cut other color glass pieces is place on the dough above and boom that machine formed.

Yet people follow engage in fights in the aftermath yet these folks are friend and what they champion is just games they discuss at night like in the link below where their will be no stealing of election if ballot boxes are locked with finger print padlocks unless the returning officer is near then the same done or if Has not taken Ginger with Skali ngulu or mbuta to avert the changing of body parts by Mr Hindu as the finger can be given to another to do the same as allow rigging and ballot boxes weighed immediately after election then a rough calculation done based on the weight to find the number of total votes cast b4 counting like a sample of 1000 ballot paper weighs this so what about the weight of ballot papers cast in this ballot box minus the weight. they are looking 4 other dubious loopholes to more confuse the folks

Dont tint ya name. U connect the wind turbine of many watts as u select to buy with the same powerful inverter, like 10,000 watts shown in the link below

With no fuel Generator above like the Linz u can use a solar panel mounted on a solar charger controller to turn the motor during the day and at night use its battery to avoid staying out of power when battery reduces in voltage not to turn the turbine to produce power. U CAN USE A Technician

List of cities around E-African coastline and around lake Victoria basin
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&ei=NXmZXvGNBNuW8gKd77iAAg&q=+cities+around+lake+victoria+basin&oq=+cities+around+lake+victoria+basin&gs_lcp=CgZwc3ktYWIQAzoECAAQR0oJCBcSBTEyLTk3SggIGBIEMTItM1DgnQFY4J0BYK-jAWgAcAJ4AIABxgGIAcYBkgEDMC4xmAEAoAEBqgEHZ3dzLXdpeg&sclient=psy-ab&ved=0ahUKEwix_OeNle_oAhVbi1wKHZ03DiAQ4dUDCAs&uact=5

Notice Me
So, a few weeks ago I wrote a little thing for MLP about Diamond Tiara and Apple Bloom. I would like to continue but as it directly uses/references the OCs of @lopoddityart I will absolutely NOT be doing so without her permission. So far, I don’t think she’s seen my requests? so I would like to show her that I will take care of her IP! (This will be my last attempt because she may also be trying to let me down easy and I don’t want to annoy her.)
Anyway, here is a more fleshed out piece that only uses canon characters.
The summers in Fillydelphia weren’t any hotter than the ones she had spent in Ponyville, but there was less of a breeze. The rows of tall buildings and the hilly terrain in general made the air pool and stagnate. It smelled, not of anything too bad, but even flowers can be nauseating if there are too many.
Luckily, Diamond Tiara lived in a nice enough building with air conditioning. She could see other windows across the street open, some with AC units screwed into the sills, some with billowing curtains that exposed electric fans inside.
Diamond Tiara settled down on the cushion, resting her chin on it and gazing up at the sky. A radio was on somewhere, and she could catch snatches of a popular Songbird Serenade song. There was an ambient heat in the apartment from the day’s baking, and she could feel the light currents of cold air falling down from the vents in the ceiling.
Just as her eyelids started to get heavy, she heard hooffalls outside her door. She leaned her head over, bringing her eyelids down more, and saw from under her lashes as letters spilled through the slot in her door. There would be nothing important of course. Her bills were paid automatically from the account her father maintained. Her mother would have written, again, since they no longer spoke on the phone. Anything else would be flyers or coupons for a restaurant she would never eat at or a store she would never shop at.
No one else really sought her out anymore. And oddly, she was okay with that.
With a groan, Diamond Tiara got up and stretched, feeling joints pop and muscles strain. She yawned as she ambled over to the door and pawed through the letters with a hoof. Mother’s letter, ad, ad, coupons for the takeout place that gave her boss food poisoning last week, a bill that was already paid, and another letter.
Diamond Tiara picked up the letter and brought it over to her desk. Dropping it, she picked up her opener with her mouth and sliced open the envelope. Getting out the letter, her face flickered with a bit of surprise.
Dear Diti,
I know it’s been awhile and we definitely need to catch up sometime, but I have something SO IMPORTANT TO TELL YOU.
It had been a long time since Silver Spoon had written. They had both moved out to Manehatten, but after the “incident” between Diamond Tiara and her mother, she had started to feel more uncomfortable being among the upper class. She didn’t resent the fashionable internships, the club parties, or the mimosas at brunch when they were all already hungover. It was more that she could no longer find the same meaning in them, and that bothered her, which made her angry.
Something had been severed and she didn’t know how to reconnect.
Tossing her mane, Diamond Tiara read the rest of the letter.
Planting her front hooves on the desk, she read it again.
With a confused noise growing in volume, she read it a third time.
It took her half an hour for her to call into work, pack a bag, and get a ticket back to Ponyville.
Apple Bloom slowly backed out into the hall as she shut the door to Granny’s bedroom. When it clicked shut, she let out a soft breath and turned, screaming as the looming mass next to her startled her.
“Holy haystacks Big Mac! You scared the life outta me!” Apple Bloom whispered, loudly, and Big Mac snorted.
“You should be resting.” He said sternly and Apple Bloom blew out a breath.
“I’m not even showing yet Big Mac. Plus, with Granny being, well.” Apple Bloom’s eyes shifted toward the door and quickly glided away. “I figure I can still do my chores and take hers over when it gets to be too much.” Big Mac only snorted again and walked past her toward the stairs. Apple Bloom sighed again before following him down.
Cheerilee was in the kitchen and Big Mac nuzzled her neck as he passed while she giggled. When Apple Bloom stepped into the kitchen, Cheerilee brought a plate over to the table and nudged it over with her muzzle.
“Eat up sugar.” Cheerilee said and her eyes twinkled with amused brightness.
“Well gosh Miz Cheerilee, you sound like a regular Apple now.” Apple Bloom said with an exaggerated drawl. Cheerilee blew a raspberry and went over to the sink.
“After being on this farm for so long, I better.” She replied. Apple Bloom glanced down at the plate of Cheerilee’s Meadow Mix salad and wrinkled her muzzle. Pushing it away with a hoof, Apple Bloom leaned over the table.
“Where is everybody else?” She asked.
“Out.” Big Mac plodded over and shoved the plate back at her. “Eat.” Apple Bloom stuck out her tongue but at yet another snort from her brother, she took in a mouthful of salad.
“Applejack is out in the barn with the cows. Rarity has the girls in town for the day looking for yarn to make Granny a new shawl.” Cheerilee explained.
“Boaf of ‘em?” Apple Bloom asked and swallowed the salad. “That’s a lot.”
“Wait till there’s three of ‘em.” Big Mac said and Cheerilee laughed.
“Don’t act like you’re not pleased as punch about having another Apple.” She retorted.
“I was hoping the next one would be ours.” Big Mac countered.
“Oh hush and go help your sister.” Cheerilee snapped pleasantly.
“Don’t strain yourself too much now.” Big Mac said and pressed his snout into Apple Bloom’s face.
“Yeah, yeah.” She mumbled.
“And eat your lunch.” He added as he walked to the front door.
“YEAH, YEAH.” Apple Bloom yelled. After the door closed, Apple Bloom took another bite. Cheerilee stayed quiet as she folded a towel and nosed it into place on the counter.
“I heard Snails stopped by this morning.” She finally said. Apple Bloom continued to chew, not wanting to say anything. When Cheerilee came to the table and sat down, she swallowed hard.
“He did.” Apple Bloom admitted.
“You haven’t wanted to see him too much, are you both still friends?”
“Yeah.”
“Then what’s going on?”
Apple Bloom sighed and pushed her nose through the remains of the salad on her plate.
“Do you think I’m too young to have this foal?” Apple Bloom asked instead.
“I think that you’re awfully young to have your life be focused on a foal, but that doesn’t mean I think you’re going to be a bad mother.” Cheerilee answered.
“Granny says, she said that having a foal is a family thing. And that while we have a whole lotta family, it’s still important to have both parents around.” Apple Bloom continued.
“She wants you to get married.” Cheerilee said and Apple Bloom nodded.
“Snails’ parents said so too. Snails is willing but...” Apple Bloom drifted and Cheerilee came closer.
“You don’t want to.” She finished and Apple Bloom sighed.
“We’re friends. What happened wasn’t, you know, planned, but that isn’t a good enough reason to get hitched.” She said.
“Apple Bloom, I trust you. I trust in your judgement and just know that you do have your whole family right behind you to support you.” Cheerilee said and Apple Bloom leaned over to rest her head on the other mare’s haunch.
“Thanks Cheer.” Apple Bloom mumbled. Cheerilee pressed her muzzle to Apple Bloom’s head.
“Anytime.”
There was a knock at the door and Cheerilee edged away gently. As she walked to answer, Apple Bloom kept eating.
“Oh! Hello Diamond Tiara!” Cheerilee greeted.
“NNNG!” Apple Bloom choked on her salad and erupted into a coughing fit.
“Well don’t die after I came all this way.” The thin voice pierced the distance of the farmhouse. “That would be totally rude.”

Thriving in an Economic Bubble during Anarchy
12. The Christian Succession – A Tipping Point?
The official results of the November “election” set our country on course to intense crises which are becoming increasingly obvious. To those of us that understand how the American economy works the official results were especially agonizing because we realized the horrendous outcome ahead. In his book entitled “Tipping Point”, Malcolm Gladwell describes how “overnight successes” result from a focused effort over a long period of time that become visible only when they finally reach their tipping point and “succeed”. Some of his examples took 20 years to “arrive”.
We saw an example of that on Sunday, August 15 when Afghanistan fell to the Taliban led by a muslim terrorist Obama released from Guantanamo Bay prison six years ago. I am not sure which one is laughing at Americans more, the muslim terrorists or Obama. What the fall of Afghanistan revealed about the Demented Marxists (DMs) is a singularly important milestone.
Another singularly important milestone was disclosed on Wednesday, August 18, when the minutes of the July meeting of The Fed revealed a high likelihood that in September, they may announce the tapering of Quantitative Easing (QE) starting the end of this year. QE is The Fed buying our government debt and mortgages to stimulate our economy by forcing interest rates to be low. Tapering the QE will result in higher interest rates especially mortgages.
Business prospers when there is certainty but since March 2020 the business community has faced a constant steam of crises. One can trace these crises to our leaders who thought that prosperity and world peace would come from shipping American manufacturing to China. Cheered by PhD’s and other “experts” who had no real-world experience, they eliminated our manufacturing base with no regard for destroying middle class jobs or our becoming dependent on a self-proclaimed enemy. The investment bankers that hollowed out America probably made huge contributions to those politicians. President Xi of China must belly laugh when he thinks about America, his vassal, pursuing self-destruction. Trump was reversing that self destruction.
The Johnson Report in 2020 established that Biden and many of our elected and appointed officials became wealthy on government salaries by catering to the Chinese. The Chinese bought influence with our colleges and universities via Confucius Centers and other “contributions”. Is selling our country to our enemy treason? Fauci used American taxpayer dollars to fund the Wuhan Bioweapon lab and the “gain of function” research into the bat virus thus paying the Chinese to build their bioweapon they unleashed in 2019. Did he buy stock in the vaccine companies? Why is he still a U. S. government employee? Do we have a shortage of traitors so we keep them? Perhaps we have a surplus so we could send some to China.
It is critical to understand how the singularly important events listed above will impact the American economy and therefore the land market. Capitalism allocates scarce resources by price. A major factor in that allocation process is the cost of money called interest rates. The Fed has been buying 10-year Treasuries because that interest rate is the base on which mortgages are calculated. New housing construction influences activity in about one-third of the total economy. That is huge and why The Fed uses new homes construction to revive our economy. The spread between mortgage rates and the 10-year Treasury is normally about 1.5% per annum so if the 10-year Treasury is at 3% then mortgages will be at least 4.5%, perhaps higher if interest rates are rising.
The impact of mortgage rates is easiest to see in the housing market but the impact is the same across all real estate. In this illustration we will only focus on the interest component of a monthly home loan. If a homebuyer can afford to pay $1,000 per month ($12,000 per year) in interest for a home.
a. At a mortgage interest rate of 3%, our homebuyer can borrow $400,000.
b. But if mortgage interest rates increase to 4% our home buyer can borrow $300,000.
c. That is a reduction of 25% in buying power.
d. The result is the home buyer either buys a smaller home or continues to rent until they can afford to pay $16,000 per year for that $400,000 home and the market slows.
Now factor in that the artificially low interest rates have caused home prices to soar and construction costs to soar (the market was allocating scarce resources). Based on exploding sales, homebuilders have made commitments for land, material, and staff to meet a superheated demand. What happens when demand falls because interest rates have risen taking some of the potential homebuyers out of the market? PAIN.
That pain is shared across the board of the homebuilding industry including lot prices. A reduction in lot prices will mean the value of land that can be developed into residential lots also will decline. Now multiply this across the entire real estate market distorted by the pandemic shutdown. We have just defined a TOTALLY UGLY real estate market.
The historic response of the Fed to an ugly real estate market is to reduce interest rates to stimulate demand. But QE and how the federal government has piled stimulus bills on top of stimulus bills has resulted in rising inflation and massive increases in our national debt. Per one analysis at today’s historic low interest rates the annual cost to service our national debt is approximately $500 Bn. If The Fed raises interest rates to an historically normal level, the cost of servicing the debt triples to an estimated 1.5 Tn. If our economy GDP is $22 Tn and historically the federal rate receipts are 20% of the GDP, then the nation revenue will be $4.4 Tn.
But Congress has not balanced the federal budget with $4.4 Tn revenue and $500 Bn in interest expense. What programs will get cut $1 Tn to balance the budget at normal interest rates? The DMs response is that Modern Monetary Theory says that the amount of national debt does not matter. Reality is that this is the same group of academics and idiots just lost Afghanistan, gave our self-proclaimed enemy massive amounts of weapons paid for by the American Taxpayers, not to mention a new base for terrorism against us, subjugated millions of Afghanis to the rule of thugs, and cannot figure out how to get Americans out of harm’s way so they are going to abandon them. Is there anything in this paragraph that gives you confidence in Biden or the DMs in Congress and our bureaucracy regarding their opinion on anything?
Remember my joke two weeks ago about the two truckers, Bob and Billy, with Bob waking up Billy because Billy “ain’t never seen a wreck like this one”. You need to wake up Billy because the highest probability is the next several years will be an historic economic period that will be the topic of many future history and economic PhD dissertations. This wreck will be epic.
Now let us add to this equation the debacle in Afghanistan. Biden and the Elites/DMs running our country have just confirmed that they only care about themselves. They got wealthy shipping our manufacturing base to China, making us dependent on OPEC oil, obtaining campaign contributions to their PACs from groups “Paying so they could Play in China, not to mention financial benefits given to their spouses and family members. To the Biden and the Elites/DM, we American taxpayers are peasants, expendable like the folks in Afghanistan.
Now that the world including the Chinese who own Biden and the DMs have proof including the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of Defense are all totally incompetent (in a capable organization they would already have been fired), China invading Taiwan is a high probability.
Never fear, guided by their Saul Alinsky/ Rahm Emanuel mantra the DMs continue their “Never waste a crisis” campaign driving us towards higher energy cost, unreliable electricity, higher taxes, “Social Justice” garbage, teaching our children CRT propaganda rather than reading writing and arithmetic, telling all whites they are racist, forcing vaccinations, et al.
What is so frustrating that Trump had us on the right economic path because he cared about every American. The DMs used their propaganda mill called the news media and their Obama appointed traitors in the government bureaucracy to steal the election so that they could regain control. Now we get to pay the price – inflation because of the stimulus funded by debt and higher interest rates which will give us a stagnant economy (called Stagflation).
Fortunately, God is in control and empowering the Patriots who are demanding forensic audits of the 2020 elections and all future elections to ensure they are honest. The Cyber Symposium in Sioux Falls last week released a “silver bullet”, that spurred many of the attendees from 47 states to form a group of state legislators to push for full forensic audits around the country including a lone Virginia Republican, Senator Chase. The next Republican legislator you see, ask them about the contract Virginia has with Unisyn Voting Systems which is owned by a business partner of the Chinese Communist Party according WND News. AuditVA!
Every portfolio should contain some cash but a great piece of land remains The Best investment long term. Capitalism builds wealth, Marxism/Socialism consumes it in self destruction. Pray for honest and forensic audited elections in the USA. Men make plans, but God ALWAYS wins. Stand with God and support the patriots while replacing the Elites/DMs.
“Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.”
(Ephesians 6:13) New Revised Standard Version, Oxford University Press)
Stay healthy,
Ned

How I got where I am now - 16: Oirantan
I finally began to feel like I was healing. The days were busy and I still didn’t feel entirely stable financially, but I felt comfortable to eat more than plain white rice and I felt emotionally supported by January, February, April, August, September and November.
(I know I haven’t mentioned September a lot, but in the file I keep open while I write this to keep track of who I’ve given what pseudonym, I realized I mentioned him once, and despite not really affecting my story and not being one of my closest friends, he was there. And he’s still here. And I also have a name to call him by. So I figured I’ll give him credit. Thank you, September, for being here from the beginning and still being my friend today).
One day as I left my teaching job and headed to a modeling job, I messaged February. “My students told me today there’s no such thing as people with blue eyes,” I typed, giggling. “They said blue eyes are only in anime. Guess that makes you an anime character.”
As I entered the building for my next job, I got a message.
“Guess I’ll go join July’s reverse harem.”
I stopped dead in my tracks. I didn’t really understand the meaning. Or maybe I did. I didn’t want to jump to conclusions, didn’t want to be the unreasonably jealous girlfriend. I met his friend July when I visited him in Osaka. She was very pretty.
No time, I thought as I put my phone away so I could get to work.
It was a disappointing day, the stylist getting mad at me for not being upfront about my exact race. It was a rare case of them wanting a white model and me being too Asian to fit the profile.
Usually only white people tell me I’m too Asian.
When I got out, I had calmed down enough to text February back with a simple question.
“What do you mean?”
It was the start of a month-long fight. He told me to calm down, and as though he’d been wanting to say this for a long time, specified that we were definitely, definitely not dating, and I had no right to be jealous that he found July attractive.
He told me that he couldn’t be in a long-distance relationship. He reminded me that January always tried to get in the way when he visited Tokyo, he accused me of conspiring with her when she tried to stay over at my apartment when he was visiting (that's another story I don't have the energy to get into now. Whenever I invited him over, she tried to stay over as well and I don’t know why).
He threw it in my face that I was a hostess. We’d made some jokes in the beginning about my “prostitute” job (I never slept with clients, never), but he came back with full force and said being with him was my “job” like he was just another client (and if that’s the case, he never once paid me; rather, he cost me money).
When I asked about the promises he made about introducing me to his family, he said, “I thought it was just mutually assumed we were both lying and using each other.” Besides, he couldn’t date a Chinese girl, that his parents already knew his girlfriend, Ichigatsu, and adored her. He admitted to me that he’d lied about breaking up with her and begged me not to tell her.
-
But he still wanted to be friends, and he still tried messaging me every day, and every day, I got upset at him.
I guess I expected him to apologize. I wanted an explanation, I wanted him to acknowledge how shitty it was to take advantage of me after October and I broke up, I wanted him to apologize for calling me a whore. I wanted back that person I first met who I could talk for hours with, the person who’d saved the fan I’d given him when we first met, the person who made me feel special and wanted. I wanted to be cared about again, I wanted to hear “Good morning!” and not feel sorrow and fury boiling in my stomach. I wanted to have something to look forward to again.
He began showing his true colors. He shared with me links from some subreddit (I don’t think it was The Red Pill, but it was similar), he began using words like “Tumblrinas” and “Feminazis” to describe women (hey! That’s when I decided to create this blog!).
It took me a while, but eventually I told him I couldn’t remain friends with him any longer and unfriended him on social media.
-
It was painful, perhaps even more painful than breaking up with October. When I said goodbye to October, I had February by my side constantly reassuring me it was for the best and that he still cared for me, even if October didn’t.
Now I’d lost both of them.
-
January took it upon herself to keep me company. I was still mad at her for always trying to butt in when I’d invited February up, but not the kind of angry that I could do anything about. She wasn't really trying to be mean or ruin my relationship. When she asked to come up to Tokyo and stay with me in my apartment, I thought, “she’s trying to be nice and she’s trying to keep me from being lonely, I should let her stay.”
At first, it was kind of fun. We played video games, watched Youtube videos and movies. We drank and ate snacks. Then, at around 3 or 4AM, she’d go to sleep on the mattress on my floor, and I’d go to the kitchen so I could cry without waking her up.
One day, we decided to go visit Shinjuku. It was fun until I spotted a pile of fliers with October’s face on it. At once, I ran to the bathroom and nearly vomited. January stood by my side, asking if there was anything she could do to help.
“Yes,” I said. “Take all the fliers and throw them in the trash.”
We went back outside where I asked the store staff a question as January took the opportunity to take every last flier. We turned all October’s CDs around on the shelf for good measure, then left.
A bit later, January nudged me.
“What?” I asked.
To my horror, she pulled a pile of October’s fliers out of her bag, smiling wide.
“I saved them for you.”
“I don’t want them!” I yelled. “I don’t want to see his stupid face ever again!”
“Do you want to do the honors of throwing them away?”
“No! I don’t want to touch them!”
-
Things started going downhill. January continued to stay in my apartment, but our conversations decreased drastically after the first few days. Even if I suggested to visit Shibuya, she trailed behind me, playing with her phone, and didn't talk to me. We got back to my apartment and she would blast my heater, then open my door and step outside to smoke with the door open.
At first, I my plan was that we could just order takeout or pre-made food, only buying what we were going to eat, ourselves. That quickly got expensive, and I wanted to save all the money I could in case I ran into a week of no work or had an emergency I needed money for. Eventually I just bought groceries as normal and cooked, but I felt bad only cooking for myself when I had a guest, so I ended up cooking for her as well as she continued to ignore me.
Then the messages from her husband started. Despite the fact I’d never met him before, apparently he knew all about me, even things I didn’t want others knowing, from my relationship with October to my hostessing job, and he seemed to also be under the impression that the latter was basically whoring. He began messaging me daily, asking how January was doing and telling me she was ignoring his texts as she sprawled out over the mattress on my floor. No matter how much I asked her to, she never felt like replying to him. He asked me to tell her that he loved her.
Every day.
Tell her I love her.
It hurt. It really, really hurt.
I wanted to live in a void where things like love didn’t exist so I didn’t feel so empty to think I had none.
The messages continued.
Tell her I love her.
-
One day in January, January finally got off my floor, silently packed her suitcase, said goodbye, and that was the last I ever saw of her.
Probably that's for the best. If she had been present when I got my electric bill, I might have tried to murder her.

America's Amtrak moment could finally be here (CNN) — Created in 1971 from the creaking remains of the classic US railroads that helped build modern America, Amtrak has often lived a precarious existence. Subject to the whims of politicians in Washington D.C. and constantly under pressure from the well-funded and hugely influential oil, automotive and airline industry lobbies, the national passenger rail operator has been threatened with oblivion on several occasions. But as it celebrates a 50th anniversary that few would have been brave enough to predict, there are signs that Amtrak’s moment may finally have arrived. The United States remains firmly wedded to the automobile and the sheer size of the nation means that air travel is often the only option for long-distance journeys. Yet dotted across the country are numerous routes where population density and distances make rail a viable option — and a social necessity. That’s not news — those routes have existed since the earliest days of the railroads. What is novel is the renewed enthusiasm of Americans for commuting or taking long-distance leisure trips by train. What is most significant right now is the presence of a passionate Amtrak advocate in the White House. President Joe Biden, a long-time rail commuter rejoicing in the nickname “Amtrak Joe,” is calling on Congress to invest $80 billion in the rail network. This massive chunk of change is needed to address Amtrak’s repair backlog; modernize the flagship Northeast Corridor; improve existing corridors, create new intercity connections; and enhance grant and loan programs that support passenger and freight rail safety, efficiency and electrification. Battered remnants Amtrak could be on the brink of transformation as it celebrates 50 years. Courtesy Amtrak Amtrak has already secured $1.7 billion in federal funding under the “American Rescue Plan” to stimulate its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, including reinstating suspended services and returning around 1,200 staff from furlough over the next two years. But finding the rest of the money Biden wants to transform passenger rail will require a huge political effort in Washington and across the nation, and a level of cross-party support for railroads not seen for many decades. Speaking at Philadelphia’s 30th Street station at an event to celebrate Amtrak’s anniversary on April 30, Biden spoke of being a proud member of the the rail network’s “family.” “Amtrak doesn’t just carry us from one place to another, it opens up enormous opportunities and it will make it possible to build the economy that we need,” he said. “The expansion of rail provides the well-paid jobs that we need in America. We can’t just build back, we have to build back better; Amtrak and intercity rail will play a central part in that.” There was no celebration when Amtrak’s first train rolled out of New York City on May 1, 1971, heading for Philadelphia. Passenger rail in the United States was in its death throes. Once proud railroads such as the New York Central and Pennsylvania RR went bankrupt after years of huge losses, their trains dated, dirty and unable to compete with the speed, comfort and modernity of airliners, intercity buses and contemporary cars. City center stations, not always in the best part of town, were dirty, dingy and dangerous with years of neglect and rising crime providing a further deterrent to passengers. Amtrak’s challenge was to knit together a disjointed collection of battered remnants, focusing its attention on saving the most viable routes. With a country as large as the United States, a coherent national passenger rail network of the type found in Europe and Japan was never a practical prospect. Instead, busy corridors such as Boston-New York-Washington D.C. would sit alongside a network of low-frequency (daily or less) long-distance services aimed at leisure travelers. In some cases, these trains were also necessary to maintain communications with communities that had grown up alongside the railroad — although countless towns were still abandoned as passenger rail services contracted in the 1950s and 1960s. New trains, faster speeds One of the new generation of Acela trains to be deployed on Amtrak’s lines. Courtesy Amtrak Today, Amtrak serves more than 500 destinations in 46 US states, the District of Columbia and three Canadian provinces on a network of more than 21,400 miles. In 2019, despite repeated threats to its existence and the prospect of swingeing budget cuts in every year of the Trump administration, the company posted its best-ever results. Between 2015 and 2019 annual operating losses fell from $306.5 million to just $29.8 million as new records were set for ridership and revenue. Operational breakeven was forecast for 2020, until the pandemic caused ridership to drop by almost 50%. A rendering of an Amtrak ALC-42 designed by Siemens. Courtesy Amtrak Despite that sudden and traumatic intervention, the overall trend of the last decade is growth, especially on the profitable Northeast Corridor, or NEC, linking Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C. In his April 30 speech, Biden said: “A single day without the Northeast Corridor would cost the US economy $100 million and we’d have to add an extra seven lanes to the interstate to accommodate all the extra cars if it wasn’t there. Compared to the alternatives this railroad is the bargain of bargains.” Since the turn of the century, Amtrak has seen ridership increase in the corridor as a result of its 150 miles-per-hour Acela trains — introduced in 2000 — as well as road congestion and steadily rising gasoline prices. In 2022, the next generation of Acelas will enter service on the NEC. Built in the United States by global rail engineering giant Alstom, the 28 Avelia Liberty trains are derived from the latest iteration of France’s high-speed TGV trains. Fitted with tilting bodies to allow faster travel through curves and capable of 160 miles-per-hour in everyday service, the new trains offer the possibility of further acceleration to 186 miles-per-hour once the infrastructure allows it. Compared to the trains they will replace, the new $2.4 billion Acela fleet is bigger, with eight additional trains (28, rather than 20) allowing a more frequent service with more seats per train. ‘Enjoyable and efficient’ With airlines slashing short-haul routes in America, some see trains as the answer. Joe Raedle/Getty Images Prototype trains started testing at the Federal Railroad Administration’s test center in Pueblo, Colorado and on the NEC in 2020. By the end of that year, the trains had completed 20,000 miles of tests, reaching a maximum speed of 166.8 miles-per-hour at Pueblo. On April 21, another huge investment in new hardware was unveiled when a contract for 83 hybrid electro-diesel train sets was awarded to Siemens. Intended to replace almost 500 of the classic stainless steel Amfleet I cars dating from the mid-1970s, the new Intercity Trainsets will feature locomotives capable of working on diesel or electric power and comfortable new Venture passenger cars. The trains are expected to be similar to those now being delivered by Siemens for the Chicago-Milwaukee Hiawatha service. They will be deployed on medium-distance NEC services, the Palmetto between New York City and Savannah, Georgia and on the Portland-Seattle-Vancouver ‘Cascades’ route. “This new state-of-the-art equipment will not only provide Amtrak customers with an enjoyable and efficient travel experience, it will also enable us to improve safety, increase passenger capacity and reduce carbon emissions,” commented Amtrak CEO Bill Flynn. More Venture cars are also on order to replace life-expired vehicles on state-supported services in the Midwest and California, including 97 cars for routes radiating from Chicago to cities in Illinois, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin and 49 for the Bakersfield-Oakland/Sacramento San Joaquins. ‘The real America’ “If you really want to see the real America, Amtrak is better.” Joe Raedle/Getty Images Long-distance routes such as the Seattle-Los Angeles Coast Starlight and Chicago-San Francisco Southwest Chief will also gain new equipment for the first time in over two decades this year when 4,200 horsepower Charger locomotives and 130 new Viewliner II sleeping, dining and baggage cars start to be rolled out. While the long-distance routes are unlikely to play a significant role in US transportation needs, they are a valuable asset for tourism and the often-isolated communities they serve. Sean Jeans-Gail, vice-president of government affairs and policy at the US Rail Passengers Association, highlights the network’s potential to give travelers a real connection to the nation it criss-crosses. “We have an extraordinary, beautiful country but the ‘Great American Road Trip’ is on life support because when you do it you hit traffic and the same homogenized strip malls over and over again across the highway network,” he tells CNN. “If you really want to see the real America, Amtrak is better.” Intercity and interurban routes away from the NEC offer Amtrak the greatest opportunity for growth in the coming years. Airlines have slashed back regional flights of around 300-400 miles in recent years, leaving many cities such as Memphis and Cincinnati with poor communications. These routes offer huge potential for rail, which is competitive with air for journeys of three to four hours between city centers, while at the same time transforming connectivity for towns in between. Jim Mathews, president and CEO of the US Rail Passengers Association says these factors present a strong case for reversing the dismantling of rail services and enhancing links between rural and urban centers. He says transportation planners and the Department of Transport are coming around to this way of thinking, looking at shifting populations and how they create new travel patterns, particularly in the Midwest and Southeast. But, he says, although America could be on the brink of a rail revolution, it is unlikely to be traveling at any great velocity. “A lot of us are guilty of getting zeroed in on the shiny object,” he tells CNN. “Sure TGV [high-speed rail] would be cool but it’s not necessary to see dramatic improvements in rail travel. “With targeted investment in track, straightening curves or new signaling you could get average speeds of up to 79 miles-per-hour. There are places now where the average is 25!” In his April 30 speech, Biden said his spending plans were crucial to leveling up America on the global stage. “I propose spending $10 billion a year on passenger and freight rail, repairing this vital infrastructure and expanding passenger rail services,” he said. “It’s going to provide jobs and accommodate jobs — towns that have been left behind will be back in the game if we can provide them with fast, clean, safe infrastructure. “We’re way behind the rest of the world on this now, and we have to move if we’re going to compete with the likes of China. There’s so much we can do, and it can have an incredibly positive impact on jobs and the environment, but we have to invest now.” ‘Worthwhile ambition’ Investment could see Amtraks trains and infrastructure upgraded to allow ehnahced speeds. oe Raedle/Getty Images Republicans have proposed an alternative infrastructure plan costed at $538 billion, just $20 billion of which would be dedicated to rail improvements. Amtrak estimates that the Northeast Corridor alone requires $31 billion to overcome a repairs backlog. Much-needed investment in equipment is also being accompanied by federal spending on infrastructure as part of President Biden’s $621 billion American Jobs Plan but there’s also increasing support at state level. In late March, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam outlined a 10-year program to expand intercity and regional rail services across the state. As well as investing in infrastructure improvements, Virginia also plans to double its financial support for Amtrak’s Washington-Richmond intercity route, allowing a near-hourly service to operate and commuter rail operations could increase by up to 60%. More than 200 miles of little-used, abandoned or freight-only lines could also be acquired at a cost of $3.7 billion to allow the reinstatement and expansion of intercity and regional rail services across the state. “I think there’s support coalescing both on left and right for investment in rail and I’m confident that the Biden team sees it as a worthwhile ambition for the current administration,” Mathews adds. “They’ve talked about more electrification for rail, a nod to the ‘Green New Deal’ but also an important preparatory step for high-speed rail. One thing we’re terrible at compared with Europe is the lack of electrified railroads. “There are limitations that come with that, but I can see much more robust electrification in California which is preparing for high-speed rail. “Californian electrification would have benefits for the environment, speed and maintenance and I can see the Biden administration going very solidly for it.” Fifty years on from US rail’s darkest days, the stars seem to be aligning for Amtrak at last. And while it will always be at the mercy of shifting political priorities and competing interests, there is a growing recognition that the world’s richest nation can no longer get by with a public transportation system that many regard as unfit for purpose. Republicans have proposed an alternative infrastructure plan costed at $538 billion, just $20 billion of which would be dedicated to rail improvements. Amtrak estimates that the Northeast Corridor alone requires $31 billion to overcome a repairs backlog.
