Kaeya who wears Khaenri’ahn symbolism boldly whenever he finds he has the freedom to, right alongside his celestia- given vision. Kaeya who fights for the valor and freedom of Mondstadt with a forsaken nation’s long-lost ceremonial bladework. Kaeya who laughs in the traveler’s face at the idea of being associated with Khaenri’ah but keeps a record of the Alberich family’s motto right alongside his childhood objects with Diluc. Kaeya who yearns for his home Khaenri’ah, his forgotten nation, and at the same time yearns for a home in Mondstadt as well despite living there. Kaeya who has not once slept peacefully at night and wake up without guilt. Kaeya who will never truly be able to pick an outcome where he can save everyone he loves. Kaeya who was doomed from the start.

before you can process the weight of your statement, wriothesely is already staring at you like your head exploded.

“i— shit. i mean… fuck. okay, don’t..” you immediately retract your arms from their position to cover your face in utter embarrassment and disbelief and just. defeat.

you expect to open your eyes to wriothesely’s grinning face, snickering at your flub like a rotten child at someone else’s detriment.

but when you don’t hear that familiar amused chuckle, you peek through your hands to see wriothesely flushed. like, redder than the shades of crimson he wears on his outfit.

even his eyes, which were usually so relaxed, were blown wide. when he finally registers that you’d noticed, he hides his face with the back of his hand in a poor attempt to hide himself. the duke avoids your gaze like it would kill him.

unbeknownst to you, some days it does.

“wriothesely, surely you don’t…” you trail off, throat suddenly dry. were you hallucinating? worse, were you excited that wriothesely had such an uncharacteristic reaction…?

maybe.

the aforementioned turns his whole body now, clearing his throat. you’d never seen him so… caught off guard. it was almost endearing— hey, is he walking away?

when you call his name, he blurts out that he’d forgotten he had somewhere he needed to be, and scurries away before you can even retaliate.

you let out a breath when he leaves his office, leaning against his desk like you depended on it. the image of his blushing face replays in your mind… you’re suddenly thankful you said such an (implied! and vague! that’s not what you meant, and he knows that, right?) lewd thing.

(never again did the duke deny you tea from his special, personal collection. even when rumors in the fortress started when people saw you walking around with his favorite cup!)
