That C.S. Lewis quote about being "old enough for fairy tales again" is really popular in this section of tumblr, but I think I've hit an opposite stage where I'm old enough for realism again. As a teenager in English class, realism seemed like the boring, baseline option that limited your imagination to only the dullest parts of daily life. If I wanted real life, I'd just live it! Stories should give us something bigger and brighter and more exciting!
But as I get older, I'm starting to understand that realism isn't about limiting yourself to the real world, it's about appreciating it. It's about noticing and caring about those tiny details in life. It's about looking at the seemingly ordinary and unexciting people and saying that their stories are worth telling, too. There's a beauty in gazing upon this world in delicate detail and drawing out those fine shades of nuance that you don't notice in the bustle of actually living life. Realism lets you slow down and recognize that our world has wonders, too, and they don't all have to be big and flashy to be worth our attention.
Younger me also got the impression that realism was depressing--we don't get happy endings because they're not realistic. And it's true that realism has a greater share of sad endings, but that can be a comfort. As you grow up, you have more and more experiences tell you that the happiness of life is buried in a lot of murkier emotions--a lot of turmoil and uncertainty and bad decisions--and realism says that's okay. The story's worth telling even if it doesn't end well, even if people don't rise above their baser natures, even if things are a bit dull. Realism can be happier, in some ways, than those bigger, brighter genre stories, because it acknowledges those murkier imperfections of life and says that they don't erase happiness or make someone's story not worth telling.
Lewis' quote is great, but it's not the whole story. Like Chesterton says, children are fascinated by fairy tales, but the youngest children are fascinated by reality--"A child of seven is excited to hear that Tommy opened a door and found a dragon, while a child of three is excited to hear that Tommy opened a door." Fantasy is a fantastic escape, but like all travel, the point of it is to make us see our own world more clearly when we return home. And that's where realism comes in. Those types of stories aren't about casting off childish fancy and focusing on the grim details of adulthood--they can be about regaining an even more innocent and child-like wonder.

I was just thinking about how Frank is assuming that Victoria doesn't want to be in a relationship because the only person she's told that she might be "looking for something special" is Emily. And then I was thinking maybe Frank and Emily will have another besties chat about their relationships because that hasn't happened in a while and then I remembered the stills from next episode and THIS IS HAPPENING NEXT WEEK

4, 18, 39 for 'get to know your fic writer?' :)
4. Where do you find inspiration for new ideas
i either slam two things that should never really be slammed together (thinking specifically of the hamlet locked tomb i want to write at some point hopefully please god) or i get into very cursed conversations with a few specific people and the everyone has to deal with the consequences (this is how the whole kate/yaz thing got started)
18. Do you title your fics before, during, or after the writing process? How do you come up with titles?
i don't just wait to title until after the writing process, i wait to title until i'm going to post it. half the time i'll have the ao3 draft window open and still haven't titled a fic. 90% of the time, titles come from whatever song lyrics i can make fit from the playlist i'm currently obsessed with. there have been very few times where titles come to me before i'm done writing.
39. Share a snippet from a WIP
ok ok ok this is from my current (probably going to be like 10k oneshot) that i've been writing for kate and ace as paring, here's the opening, i'm-
"Kate meets Ace when they’re both fifteen and more than a little jaded. It’s a history that shapes her in many ways, and it goes something similar to this:
She spends a summer in Perivale with her grandparents, a dreadful, boring affair that leaves her pacing their tiny cottage–the perfect condensation of an aesthetic that’s meant to drive a teen to the brink of insanity–after only a few days. Problem is, she doesn’t know much of anyone here who isn’t keen on bridge and knitting and the teens that hang about outside the pubs and corner shops are more than a little intimidating. Most glower when she walks past, make her acutely aware that she does not belong and each of the factors alone would be fine. Were it that Perivale were simply a boring, droll place with interesting, open people, were it that the people terrible but Perivale intriguing on its own, were it that Kate could stand bridge and knitting and learn to love the slow place, she would be alright. It wouldn’t be so much of a problem."

Keeping it a secret for so long has been torturous, but now that the game reveals are happening I can finally say that for the past few years I’ve been part of the player council for the upcoming DRAGON AGE: THE VEILGUARD!
(The only photo proof I'm able to show is of me appreciating the Arishok's huge...tracts of land at Bioware Edmonton)
At this time all I can tell you is that my role was to provide feedback to the development team to help improve the game, something which has been very special to be able to do. Now that things are in motion, I’m excited to see what gets revealed with each official announcement…

I love that In Stars and Time gives the nonconsensual kiss a proper horrified reaction, by the way. Most media where a character can kiss someone out of no where either make it a funny thing or the "romantic" thing, but here Siffrin kisses without permission out of no where and Isabeau reacts correctly! He pushed them away! Because thats surprising, and fucked up to do to someone with no lead up and no permission! Isabeau had no context, and at the time when the kiss happened, was under the impression that Siffrin didn't like touch which can have a variety of horrible reasons for it. Not only that but... We don't know what face Siffrin was pulling and I don't think it was a nice one. Which, again, means that we don't have all the context either! This is a horrible event that has horrible consequences and I love that it does. Because it's something that is horrible and objectively one of the worst things Siffrin did to one of the others in the loops, so I'm just!!! So excited it had bad consequences!!!
