As a sanguophage mechanitor with psylink level 6, every (non-mechanitor) implant she can possibly get that doesn't come with significant drawbacks, 9+ in every skill, and now a spouse, I think Yoshiko's development has kinda plateaued. Making her dramatically stronger (by, say, making all the sanguophage stuff into endogenes and then stacking a new xenotype on top of that) would take a ridiculous amount of time. Otherwise, the only real ways for her to get stronger are luciferium or by upgrading some of her bionics to archotech, and once you're at the 'every body part is bionic' stage already, those are pretty marginal upgrades. Skill-wise, all but two skills are into the range where they decay, and since she uses almost every skill on a daily basis, the levels are just going to keep fluctuating up and down as her focus shifts. Also, she's like... 35 now. It'd be weird if she ended up older than I am. So this doesn't feel like a bad spot to let her retire from active duty and enjoy the rest of her immortal life in peace.

Which leaves me debating where to take things in the future. Somehow I'm not bored of this yet, and the blog's follower count has doubled over the past week or so, so apparently somebody still wants to read this. Various options include:

The strongest contender in my head is roughly repeating the original start, but without the mechanitor part. Starting off with a lone child who doesn't have robots to fall back on. (Obviously this would be a different girl named Yoshiko.) Not sure if I'd go for the orphanage thing again, or try a different goal. I'd also probably have to disable the exostrider corpse in the scenario, or she could just rush becoming a mechanitor anyway.

As above, but start as a non-baseline xenotype to shake things up a bit. Incompetent 13 year old sanguophage could be an interesting way to help the kid survive while introducing its own problems to work around. Otherwise, maybe yttakin, impid, or waster? Yttakin and impid both have powers that would make combat a less dicey proposition early on. Waster could live in wastelands, which comes with its own benefits and challenges.

Or start with a new 13 year old mechanitor, but try the solo mechanitor thing, never allowing anybody else to join the colony. This would remain an interesting challenge for longer, but it also might be a little boring to talk about since there wouldn't be any character interactions.

The way opposite option would be something like using VFE - Tribals to start out with a pre-neolithic group and try to progress from 'what the fuck is ""fire""???' up to building a spaceship or something. Which would very likely be a generational kind of deal, because historically that takes a while.

Just start a new colony with Yoshiko and Cindy and keep going. The orphanage thing has been pretty fun to play tbh, and while Robot's Ocean is pretty secure now, as the Hospital Rockets Incident demonstrated, just because she's super-competent doesn't mean that bad stuff can't happen. On the other hand, starting with two competent adults, I think things would snowball a lot faster. This would probably involve using Character Editor or something to ditch the current save and start a new one, presumably with a mod or two disabled. Although unfortunately, one of the prime candidates for the mod that's breaking things is the one that allows for humanoid mechs.

As brilliant as 2-5 is, there's just one thing that really irks me about it. Like, in a vacuum, it's not a problem. But when I look at it in context with the rest of the game?

The one drawback here is Chiaki's total lack of involvement in the murder that she becomes the Blackened for. She's the unlucky winner of the suicide roulette. She was selected because she was the Traitor but ultimately Chiaki dies not for anything she does, but simply for what she is. She's a passive recipient of a murder she commits.

By itself, this would be a minor foible. But in light of the larger trend of how the game has handled its male and female deaths? Like. Okay.

In the end, I really like 2-5. The suicide roulette and the reveals surrounding Chiaki are incredible.

But it's also hard to shake the feeling like she's just another name to add to the list of female characters killed off for underwhelming reasons, having very little to do with her own death.

The one female character who had anything approaching agency in her death is Peko - A character who literally self-identifies as an unpersoned tool existing only for her master's benefit, and whose plan is unraveled by simply being too stupid to pull it off correctly.

(Seriously. She spends an HOUR of gameplay framing herself for the crime she committed. I still can't get over that.)

The male killers and victims of Danganronpa 2 are active participants in the events that end their lives, while with the exception of Peko, the women of Danganronpa 2 are consistently passive recipients of said events - even when they're the ones carrying them out.

Chiaki's execution comes as a parallel to Alter Ego's in a variety of ways - particularly setting them up to make an eleventh hour return because Junko doesn't actually know how to kill an AI. They're space pirates, and I planned for this character to have a fighting role, but I can find another job for her if that's bad. Or she could do that without orienting magic?

Personally, I find it more interesting to separate disability and powers, and would more enjoy seeing a blind character whose focus was something completely unrelated to her disability, but I don’t think it’s particularly problematic on its own. The only thing that comes to mind is that it can run the risk of making everything revolve around this characters blindness, so I would personally encourage you to consider who she is outside of her blindness and what other kind of object she might choose. It helps when a disabled character isn’t just disabled as there only predominant feature and has other interests that are reflected in other parts of themselves. Make sure the object she chooses fits who she is as a person, not just what her disability is.

As for giving her spells that would allow her to form a mental image of an area, I would generally advise against that as it does cross into the territory of super powers that negate a disability, giving her a sort of magic vision. Powers that would replace a mobility aid are frequently a little too conveniently powerful and wind up allowing the disabled character to read more like an abled one, erasing big chunks of the disability. It’s often used as a way for abled writers to be able to just write the disabled character the same way they would write an abled character, which can lead to a lot of instances of it feeling like the character is only disabled when it’s interesting or plot relevant or convenient for the author. This method is often far more effective and efficient then standing around waving this little buzzing gadget for a minute and a half trying to build the most vague outline of the object.

All this is to say that I think it’s important to consider exactly what kind of information these spells can supposedly provide and ask yourself if it would really be any more effective than regular non-visual techniques. Would this character personally take interest in spells or powers like that? What are her other interests? What other kind of powers would she like to have? What kind of powers might suit her personality better? What method do you use to determine the spells and powers used by your abled characters? Whatever that method is, apply it in the same way to your disabled characters. Allow their character as a whole to dictate their powers, even if the powers you come up with using that method have nothing to do with their disability or are even outright contrary to it. That goes along way toward making a disabled character feel more well-rounded and human and complete, rather than just a living embodiment of disability.

The blind character with blindness accommodating powers is often not just common but the default. If there is a blind character with powers, it is almost always powers that a little too conveniently happened to revolve around hearing or feeling or augmenting other senses in order to negate chunks of the blindness. I have seen hundreds of these characters, but hardly ever have I seen a blind character who can fly or speak to animals or just blow things up with their mind. I would love to start seeing more blind characters who have magic or super powers that have nothing to do with blindness whatsoever but instead have everything to do with the character as a person.

Unit Teambuilding - Sygna Suit Cynthia

Apparently, it has taken this long for SS Cynthia to be a good idea for me to pull for.  I think she ran once before and I couldn’t for some reason, but nothing stopping me now!  Anyway, SS Cynthia’s an old unit by now, but with grid expansions, there’s a good chance for something nice in the future.  But does she need that boost, or is she doing alright?

General Overview “Alright” is probably the best we can say.

The main problem is being a Dragon.  There are tons of Dragon-type damage dealers, and for some reason, SS Cynthia is one of them.  Granted, this has worked out recently, as it being Fighting type would be devastating if it couldn’t access Fighting Zone from her new Aura Sygna Suit.  Speaking of, why does Cynthia have three sygna suits?  Shouldn’t think just be “Anni Cynthia?”  I don’t get it.

Kommo-o has two major drawbacks in my mind.  One is that its main attack debuffs defense every use.  This is painful, especially in Gauntlet where mixed offenses can be a thing.  With no way to avoid this, it’s...rough.  The other is the requirement for paralysis to kick off multipliers.  Which (1) is restrictive, and (2) aren’t even that good.  20% move and 50% sync, oooooh, look at Numbers McGee over here.

SS Cynthia really focuses on one of two grid builds: pure power, or High Five.  With natural High Five, and access to another on her grid, Cynthia’s able to gradually boost everything, which most importantly recovers that lost defense every time she syncs.  It’s...honestly a more clever strategy than I initially gave it credit for, but it does suffer from diminishing returns.  There’s also the option for Adrenaline 1.  With Head Start 1 naturally, and Adrenaline 1 on grid, Cynthia’s in a position to fast-ramp twice.  Not a great position, but a position.

Overall I think she’s serviceable if clumsy.  Offensive stats are strong, but bulk and speed let her down without support, or double High Five with her taking each sync.  Her self-setup technically exists, but her ability to boost crit rate requires her to be low HP, and X items on strikers are notoriously inefficient.  Still, there’s been worse.  Like Lance.  Who can’t buff shit.

Team 1: SS Cynthia, SS Brendan, SS Steven Okay, hear me out, Hoenn fans.  SS Brendan can provide nearly max offensive benefits to SS Cynthia in two turns, with Cynthia only needing one X Sp Atk to cap offenses.  How, you ask?  SS Steven’s Speed Forme Deoxys, which cuts sync countdown by 2.  With Cynthia’s Head Start, now you have -3, saving a full turn.  But wait!  SS Brendan can also pick up Adrenaline on his grid, and SS Steven can use Double Team after first sync for another -3.  If you quad queue successfully, you’ve also saved a turn on second sync.  If you didn’t, don’t worry, Cynthia’s trainer move also cuts a minimum of 1 sync cooldown, so you got it anyway.  So you sync first with SS Brendan to mega evolve, capping crit for the team and giving, ideally, double sync buff, then sync with Cynthia to get the stat party rolling.  In the interim, you have SS Cynthia and Brendan both spamming Dragonbreath for paralysis chances.  Once successful, Cynthia can then go nuts with Clanging Scales, while Brendan debuffs special defense for maximum damage.  Steven helps by maybe getting a flinch in or something, who knows.

Team 2: SS Cynthia, SC Jasmine, C!Elesa/P!Serena/Erika If you’re picking up SC Jasmine this month, which you should if you haven’t, she’s an ideal partner to SS Cynthia as well.  Not just for the buffs, though they are nice, but because of Safety Net.  SS Cynthia cutting her own defense, as well as having less than ideal bulk for when crits happen, means she can be threatened pretty hard by AoE moves in Gauntlet.  Safety Net blocks those attempts and keeps her alive.  C!Elesa or P!Serena are options to immediately spread paralysis, which kicks off multipliers and frees up some energy on the grid for Cynthia.  If you don’t have them, Erika’s a fine alternative to hit paralysis and potentially debuff special defense.

Team 3: SS Cynthia, Lucas, SC Lillie Lucas has Dragon Zone, which is the big multiplier I’ve been ignoring here.  SS Brendan likely does better overall, but I put SC Lillie here to remind you that she can paralyze foes that attack her.  That’s a thing she can do.  Which can save Cynthia a lot of time and stress.

Team 4: SS Cynthia, MU Torchic/Drake, Erika/Support Clefable Okay so maybe you don’t have any of that stuff.  Maybe you just have mostly F2P tools.  This could work, maybe.  MU Torchic can cover for Cynthia’s buffing needs, while Erika supplies the paralysis.  It’s a much less efficient option, but the core of her needs is present.

As an alternative, Drake has Team Sharp Entry on his grid, and can give up the defense buffs for Hostile Environment.  Focus on inflicting paralysis and buffing first, with Cynthia hopefully taking a bit of damage, and getting +2 crit on her trainer move.  Support Clefable gets Let’s Brainstorm for +1 special attack/speed, an ideal combo for Cynthia, and has a Potion to help keep the party alive.  And look, this is a situation where Drake’s actually better than Marley for once!  Because Cynthia specifically needs paralysis.  That is what you are good for, sir, and you’re giving up one of your defense boosts’ MPR for it.  Good day.

Final Thoughts I think what interests me about SS Cynthia is that, looking at her ability to salvage an F2P roster, she’s really not doing so hot.  She doesn’t synergize particularly well with most options, in large part because DeNA refuses to give us a good F2P Sp Atk/crit buffer.  But with other modern meta tools?  SS Cynthia feels like she’s got some impressive possibilities.  The SS Brendan/Speed Form SS Steven combo in particular seems like it’d be a ton of fun.

But I definitely don’t think she’s anything necessary.  Dragon damage is really common, up there with Psychic, Fire, Grass, and Water.  You probably have Dragon damage dealers who get the job done already, what with Cyrus and Zinniquaza.  So I wouldn’t say definitely go for her, but she’s not a bad consolation prize if you’re going for one of the other two.

I don’t know what to call Rothbard and Gazpus’ magic system other than "mnemonic." It relies on you remembering the spell at hand and employs rhyme in order to achieve that end. Mnemonic magic makes sense when surveying Rothbard and Gazpus’ entire philosophy. It is also quite unique in the TTRPG space. It does have its competitors though, and they have their own benefits and drawbacks.

Vancian magic is most common due to Dungeons & Dragons’ popularizing of the system. You have prepared spells with a certain number of spells you are allowed to cast per-day, materialized as spell-slots. Its benefit is its clearly defined perimeters, its limitation of spells which can be presently used, and its openness with regard to selection of spells. The drawbacks, on the other hand, are philosophic in some sense. What, in fiction, does the spell slot mean? What, in the fiction, is the explanation for the limitation of the spell slot and not individual spell use [which more aligns with Jack Vance’s use of magic]? And why in fiction do spell slots reset after use if magic is something outside of the caster being tapped into? It is hard to philosophically justify, though it creates a good systemic balance for spellcasting characters and their non-spellcasting compatriots/enemies. 

Psionic magic has become more popular post-3e Dungeons & Dragons and is often used in place of Vancian magic. Psionic magic is any system which uses a resource-like token or point system in which points are expended for use of magic. Skill, of course, defines how many points a character may have or expend. In fiction, this makes good sense - magic is a resource that can be expended and recharged like a form of energy in a person. However, mechanically it can be quite frustrating. This is true of all of D&D’s magic systems - magic users are often weaker than everyone else in every other area, so when their magic is expended, the character becomes rather useless and this can be frustrating to the player. 

"Allomancy" or "resource magic" is another form of magic, which sees far less use, and in some ways for obvious reasons. Allomantic magic relies on the player’s use or expending of a physical resource like metal or clay or some other good [see Sanderson’s Mistborn & World of Dungeons], and was meagerly incorporated into Dark Sun as a part of a pseudo-Vancian “Defiling Magic”. In essence, if you run out of the resource, you run out of magic. This lacks favor because it involves an intentional management of inventory, something which most players and Storytellers dislike. For this reason, it is often incorporated into a system, rather than being allowed to stand on its own - Dungeons & Dragons, as noted, has flirted continuously with Allomantic magic, even in use of the modern “spell components”. 

Lastly, one magical alternative is Eugenic magic. Eugenic magic is magic which is innate to a character due to their family genetics. Magic in this system is an inherited trait. This sees use in fictions like Harry Potter, Dune, and Star Wars; and in TTRPG’s through the influence of “Kids on Bikes”. Eugenic magic usually makes magic one of the defined stats of the player’s character - like Charisma and Strength. In “Kids on Bikes”, they use the “Weird” stat; other systems like “the Window”, “ Cornerstone”, and “Stormbringer” use it in this manner, substituting their own term. This is often the preferred method for those who either don’t like Vancian/Psionic magic or who often are on the receiving end of magical damage within a game. There is a sense of “leveling the playing field”  when magic becomes a stat like Strength or Charisma. It has its mechanical problems of course, such as how does one determine what spell effect takes place when using a “spell check” and how extreme the effect is allowed to be. If it is the Storyteller/Dungeon Master, it lies squarely outside the user’s control and this can be extremely irritating to players. And there are some notable philosophic problems with the system and its effect on the story; essentially some characters are just genetically more special than others in one way or another that gives advantage. A world of Eugenic magic is a world of hard-fast genetic traits, where genes can determine one’s abilities to do this or that, which is fine if the Storyteller and players are willing to reckon with that as a reality in their world. But they cannot simply ignore it. 

Sword & Backpack’s Mnemonic System is great because it places magic firmly in the hands of the player. It is a do-or-do-not way of doing things. Outside of combat, it acts like any other trait though a bit more complicated in execution. Which is fair, because magic is not a trait, but something else entirely. In combat, it can be dispelled by a spellcaster though; avoiding its effects is then equally in the hands of players. Its use and consequences in combat therefore, remain fairly balanced while distinct. It also makes the firm statement that magic is not a sword and a sword is not magic, while still balancing its use in combat such that it is not an automatic success. Furthermore, Mnemonic magic can be picked up by anyone throughout the game, as Rothbard and Gazpus note; a Wizard is only a Wizard because his character is devoted to magic, he can learn fighting and fighters can learn magic as well. Its downside, of course, is its complexity for the player and its lack of limitation in use. For a Storyteller, a spell that can be used as many times as the player wants can feel unfair and counterbalancing it feels equally unfair to players. 

So what system is best? My Thought is that it entirely depends on the sort of story you want to tell and the sort of players you have at the table. If your players hate memorizing things or struggle quite a lot with doing so, Vancian or Psionic magic may be better. But if they hate stats and figures, and keeping track of rests and so on, it may be better to employ Eugenic magic with an openness to what they choose to try to do. 

Story-wise, one should consider how the magic is going to shape and effect play, as well as the world you are playing in. A Vancian world of knowledge is different from a Mnemonic and experiential one. Both are different from a Psionic world, and a Psionic world is different from a Eugenic one. How we treat magic as a fact of our universe unfortunately has major ramifications for how our whole world functions as a result. So pick carefully; and make sure your players are onboard.
