"the jedi don't have therapists-"
jedi philosophy, and in particular the practices and teachings that jedi were expected to implement in their everyday lives, was therapy. dialectical behavior therapy (dbt), to be exact. anyone who's familiar with dbt knows where i'm already going with this, but like genuinely look up the basic tenets of dbt and it's identical with what the jedi were doing.
dbt, to put it simply, is a specific therapy technique that was designed for ptsd and past trauma. it's pretty different from traditional talk therapy. it combines a few different environments (individual, group, etc.), recognizing that no single format of treatment can stand alone.
the key focuses of dbt include:
emotional regulation- understanding, being more aware of, and having more control over your emotions
mindfulness- regulating attention and avoiding anxious fixation on the past or future
interpersonal effectiveness- navigating interpersonal situations
distress tolerance- tolerating distress and crises without spiraling and catastrophizing
i'm sure it's already clear from that list alone how much the jedi teachings correspond with the goals of dbt. the jedi value, teach, and practice the following:
identifying and understanding emotions
mindfulness and living in the present
compassion, diplomacy, and conflict resolution (on interpersonal scales, not just planetary or galactic)
accepting and tolerating certain levels of distress or discomfort (particularly mental, such as discomfort at the thought of losing a loved one to death)
idk man seems almost as if jedi mental health practices and dbt are two sides of a completely identical coin. (fun fact: both star wars and dbt are products of the 70s.)
and guess what? dbt was specifically designed as a treatment for borderline personality disorder. remember that one? or, if you don't, maybe you remember a specific character, the one who was literally used as an example by my professor in my undergrad psych class when she was teaching us about bpd?
Tumblr media
tldr: simply existing within the jedi community, practicing jedi teachings, surrounded by a support network of other jedi of all life stages, was the therapy for anakin. even when viewed through a modern lens. it was even, more specifically, the precise type of therapy that has developed in modern times to treat the exact types of mental issues he was struggling with.

It's not as simple as 'reaching out'
I HATE when people state that people with mental illness have to reach out for help and can't expect people to deal with them until they heal, as if it's as simple as calling a helpline and then we're miraculously cured.
For the past 10 years I have been 'reaching out'. I have seen psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, social workers, peer support workers. I've been hospitalised 9 times (3 of which I was involuntarily sectioned). I've tried 15 different psychotropic medications including anti-depressants, mood stabilisers & anti-psychotics. I've tried countless forms of therapy - DBT, ACT, CBT, Art/ music therapy, schema, cognitive analytical therapy etc.
I have reached out and was met with: 18 month waiting lists for specialist help Dismissive & gaslighting doctors who don't listen or even want to help Therapists who refuse to work with me because of my BPD diagnosis Being told I'm 'too complex' and my conditions are never going to get better Being completely sedated by medication because doctors would rather me not be an issue to others instead of actually helping me
Blamed for the abuse I sustained as a child and traumatising things that have happened to me and being completely re-traumatised
All this and then I get the honour of paying $200p/h for these 'professionals' to 'help' me.
I have been dehumanised and vilified by almost every doctor/ psych I have seen over the past 10 years. Not listened to , over medicated and left hollowed out, worse off and hopeless; so no... it's not as simple as 'reaching out' and mentally ill people deserve healthy relationships even if we aren't in therapy.

STOP living your life in accordance to other people’s approval of you. START living your life in accordance to your approval of you. Do you like yourself? Do you like things you say and do? What do you want out of the people around you? What things can you do to help make your life easier? What things make you happy? Cease looking for someone else’s answer to those questions, and start answering them yourself.

just had my first evaluation session for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, I think it went well, two more sessions and they'll be able to determine if they can take my case or if they need to refer me to another service, fingers crossed
if you want to help me out on this journey, consider supporting me on Patreon to help cover the costs of therapy
right now on there I have two versions of my latest drawing (which is still not available to the public) as well as a speedpaint of said drawing
also for this month's reward I will be premiering my first youtube video which is currently 95% edited and I'm finishing the script, just need to record voice on top of that and it's done

If you are like me and live with BPD, I’m sure you may have at least heard of DBT. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is the type of therapy that has really turned my life around, so I’d like to make a Masterlist of resources both free and with cost.
FREE RESOURCES FOR LEARNING DBT:
A great website that teaches the skills is ⬇️
A great YouTube channel that has videos of Marsha (the creator of DBT)
A great podcast that teaches and discusses the skills is:
DBT RESOURCES THAT COST MONEY:
This is a great easy to learn card deck with the skills explained in concise ways.
This is a great workbook. It was made BY the lady who CREATED DBT.
This is a great book that delves into DBT at its core (and isn’t so much activity focused vs. explaining each skill)
That’s it! I’m not saying this type of therapy is FOR SURE going to be the right therapy for you, but it’s SO worth trying if you have Borderline Personality Disorder like me.
Hopefully this helps someone!

I was going through some old folders on my laptop and found this picture that I took of my notebook/journal when I was in psyche ward. I was hospitalized for DBT treatment for my Borderline in 2019. Prior to that I was diagnosed in 2016 with major depression, separation anxiety, night terrors and eating disorder. From 2016 up until now I’ve been in several therapy forms. My diagnostic with BPD came in early 2018 and by January 2019, two weeks after my birthday, I was sent to the psyche ward for 3 months. It was lonely, it was sad, it helped but I would never go back. Therapy is helpful for me. It has its ups and downs. But being put in a hospital with strangers without escape is something I would never want to experience again. 🖋️ reblog is ok, don’t repost/use

Dbt SkillS ~ TIPP
Used when you need to calm down to think more rationally and/or use other skills
I find these are best used when I'm in a thought spiral or panic attack, my go-to out of all of these being temperature
T - Temperature
Use temperature to shock your system, I prefer cold but its up to what works for you
Splash cold/warm water on face
Cold/warm shower
Squeeze an icecube
I - Intense Exercise
Use exercise to get excess energy out of your system. Make sure not to overwork yourself and listen to your body
Go for a walk/run
Go to the gym
Do intense stretches/yoga
P - Paced Breathing
Use paced breathing to calm yourself, my favourite method is shape breathing but find what works for you!
Shape breathing
YouTube breathing exercises
Guided meditations
P - Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Tense muscles and, starting with feet, relax them til you're fully relaxed
Can be repeated
I hope these are helpful to someone and I'll probably post most things I've learned in DBT every once in a while as I feel like it

Anyone tried this DBT workbook? If so, what did you think? I'd be especially interested in knowing how it differs from general dbt workbooks
