That things to incorporate in smut post got me thinking. In a roundabout way that’s prob only indirectly smutty. Ok, say Jim had managed to acquire a younger girlfriend (which he totally thinks gives bragging rights because let’s be real, he’d be forever going on about it), pre-chow time. Post…well, look at how obviously different he moves. Not just the limp, but the caution. He’s more AWARE now that he’s an old guy *coughwithmoobsbutilovethatforhimcough* Very mortal. Very missing half his parts. GF still has more than half her life left, barring any unfortunate circumstances.

I think he’d be an absolutely tragic nightmare combo of clingy/flirty/tell him still think he’s hot/you can be the sexy nurse, but then when the phantom pains get bad enough to make him really THINK about it, he’s all cranky from wounded ego. No, he DOESN’T want a massage (because that’s a thing you can do for phantom limbs, apparently). He’s not taking his pants off for THAT, thanks. Maybe tries to spin it into something dirty, like “but if you’re asking for more fun reasons…” Before he just gives up and goes back to sulking. Says just hand him the booze and go away, he’s got things to drink about for awhile.

OMG YES- AND PROSTHETICS TOO! If I make smut for Jim, or Long John Silver, or Captain Hook- will absolutely be putting detail in about that. Thank you for the reminder!

Plot: A typical night trying to make Jim take care of himself causes a couple revelations for you both. Mostly for you, because he's too damn stubborn to believe you.

Warnings: Very evident age-difference relationship (Its a major theme this time). Insecurities regarding aging and prosthetics. Unedited.

Its a stand-still. You imagine a tumbleweed blowing by in the untidy above-bar apartment; between the ratty old couch and the beer-damp coffee table, and across old jack bottles and a loose-strand mat thats seen far better days. But your focus is stead-fast on Jim across the room by the window. You're half concerned he's going to try and climb out of it to get away from you.

Well- not concerned-concerned, not in a way where you're worried he's going to hurt himself (Thats his prerogative), but more because then he'll escape. And you wont be able to get his damn leg off.

"Jim." You start, a very firm frustrated tone moulding itself to the sound of your voice; not taking your eyes off of the old cowboy so he knows you mean business. "The doctors said you need to take it off at night so the wound can b r e a t h e. If you don't, it can suffocate and get worse. You could lose more of your leg."

"Yeah, well, then it'll get worse! I'll lose more, wont I?" He exclaims, giving a shrug and you throw your arms up in frustration at this quick responce. This man!!- "Its my leg and I'll decide when I take it off."

"Just let me help you, you old coot!"

He waives his hand and the new hook around and shrugs. "I'm fine! Don't need aany help, thank you very- hey." The sudden dark tone that enters his voice creep in as soon as you move to approach and makes you halt immediately in your tracks as he sets you with a very stern look. Jim points his hook prosthetic threateningly at you. "You stay right there."

Well, it would have been threatening if you didn't know him so well. He was not going to hurt you, so you take another step. "Or what?" You ask, shrugging.

"Don't be cute." He warns, a growl in his voice and a snarl on his face.

"Whatever do you mean?- Oh, come on, Jim!" Mid-sentence, Jim had turned around and opened the window. "Its dark, its raining, and its slippery. how do you suppose you're gonna climb down??"

"I already left a ladder out there, assuming you were gonna start this shit again t'night." Of course he did. "Just gotta slide to it. Hm... " The way he's peering out the window suggests that he kind of forgot, though, the exact location of the ladder on the other end of the porch cover below the window sill. Would that stop him, though? No-

Ughh. You groan, and drop your face into your hands out of exasperation.

You managed to compromise- he gets to keep his leg on but you convinced him to take off the hook, so long as you handled opening his beers for him. Now you sit side by side under the window (The cool air from the rain is nice after the heat of the stand-off and negotiations). Carefully, you pull the tab on a can of gross beer and pass it across to him. "... so. Same time tomorrow night?" You ask, a worn-out smile on your face.

He chuckles darkly beside you, taking a sip of his drink. "Probably. 'nless you plan on leavin' me alone?"

"No." Nice try on that wishful thinking.

"Then yeah. Same time, same place then."

"... you know you have to give in eventually," You pipe up again, turning your head to look at him, leaning your temple on the wall. When he looks back, you flash him a sleazy smirk (You learnt from the best). "I have better stamina then you do."

That unlocks a real chuckle from him, his shoulders jumping and a smile flickering across his face in a way that makes your smile turn genuine. "Yeah, well, you might be right about that princes but I'm a lot older then you- I know things a lotta you don't, right?" He looks away from you. "And I don't anticipate you stickin' around here forever, so eventually I'll be home-safe." Your heart falls, and the smile slowly disappears from your face listening to him- but he doesn't seem to make any note of it as he flashes you a dirty look of his own. "No matter how good your stamina is."

"... what, on earth, do you mean?"

Jim gives a shrug. "Well sweetheart, just- you're a sweet young little thing. I'm uh- well," Chuckling, his eyes move away from yours again. "I'm a little past my prime, hm? Pretty sure I know how this story plays out. Eh?" There isn't a self deprecating vibe about what he's saying, he just sounds certain. And that baffles you all the more.

You straighten up. "No?? Well, you'd be wrong. Because, I- I- "

"Aw, sweetheart, you don't needta reassure an old man. I'm fine with all this is. Sure, I like ya, but I know what I am, hm? A little bump in the road, right? I'll be fine when you go off an- "

Oh you have never wanted to smack someone so bad. "Jim!" You exclaim in exasperation and a lick anger, cutting through the absolute bullshit. "First of all- " You take the beer out of his hands, set it clearly out of his reach, and then sit down very firmly in front of him; hands on his shoulders. Holding his attention. He looks bemused, and you wish he'd wipe that little grin off his damn face. "Second of all, listen up. I'm serious, here. I'm not going anywhere, not as far as I'm concerned right now. You're a pain in the butt sometimes but I really don't know where this idea that our relationship has an expiration date is coming from. When we met you were in this- what changed??"

"Well," He chuckles, sounding like he thinks whatever he's thinking is just obvious before he looks meaningfully down at himself. "Uh, I'm not exactly g.i. joe fresh outta the box, am I sweetcheeks? Don't even got all my pieces anymore."

Your jaw drops, and for a moment you don't know what on earth to say. You feel like you cant even breathe. Is that what this is about?? Oh- for gods sake. Setting your face in a frustrated frown, you get up- only momentarily- and climb on into Jim's lap; wrapping your arms around his neck and getting comfortable with a sigh.

"Listen," After taking a deep breath, you force your voice to be low and soft, and start again. "You're hot. How can you not know that?? I knew you were crazy but I didn't know you were out of your mind."

A slow, mirthless grin spreads across his haggard face. "... uhuh. Now I think you're just trynna get in my pants, hm?" Oh, he's deflecting. You refrain from the urge to roll your eyes, but come on man. How transparent.

"Maybe I am. Know why?"

"... " he sighs and rolls his remaining eye.

"Cuz you're hot!" You insist blatantly, putting your hands on either side of his face now so the tips of your fingers disappear in his short grey hair. "Please believe me, I'm nuts about you."

"Sure... "

"Everything about you is perfect. I like you; how you are and how you look." You say gently, tilting your head to the side. "... which is why, no matter how difficult you are or what you do to yourself, I'm not going anywhere. You can refuse help all you like, be as stubborn as you can old man, but I'm in this for long haul. So unless you don't want me, anymore, in which case I'll leave and thats fine, I- "

He had let you speak and do whatever you wanted this whole time, only interrupting when you paused, but when you move to get up and off him now Jim uses his one good hand to catch you and keep you where you are, with a finger in one of your belt loops. "Hmmm, now why would I want that?... "

Happily, you settle back down, wrap your arms back around his neck and lean your forehead against his. "... do you believe me?"

"... Not really." He says bluntly with a cheeky grin, making you groan in defeat. Stubborn. Old. Goa- "But I believe you believe all that crap right now- so I'll just enjoy the ride, huh? Long as it plays out."

Cosmos is staff, so he wouldn't really be in any events poor guy 😔. However, I do see him joining Trein to keep an eye on students during Glomas. Though his worry is split between the students and Trein (since Trein is quite old fhathrytu)

Finn:

•Glomas 100%

•I also want to send him to Deuce's hometown event for the sole reason of seeing him in a bright bunny costume with that resting bitch face of his, but I think he'd go to Epel's hometown event in stead (he's eating Jade under the table by trying every possible food twice ove).

•Finn would adore going to the Scalding Sands and learning about its culture. He does struggle with the heat (Malleus was very concerned) but he simply carries on and keeps trying whatever food and music he can. He misses his partners, though, and makes sure to bring back souvenirs.

•Finn in the Ghost Bride event helps Riddle, Epel and the rest, aand if he tried the proposal thing? Slapped real fast if not for his height then for his chubbiness (I believe Eliza is meant to represent unrealistic standards?) and his general creepy aura

•He plays a huge part in spectral soiree since two of his partners got taken and... well... when they cross into the mirror, everyone can see the ghosts.

•Finn is in Vargas Camp 2 with Malleus and they both absolutely dominate lmao

•I can't really decide what side Finn is on for Beans Fest, but I think Monster team suits him well, though he wants to sit with Jade in the freezer.

•Beach event beach event beach event. He's stressed tf out, but mostly glad Azul and Floyd are there (and looking very handsome dear Sea Witch someone hold him steady)

Nkulu:

*Playful Land, I can definitely see him getting all excited over the shiny looking ticket (and sad when Riddle gets mad gifjf)

•Nkulu struggling to fit into an outfit for Deuce's hometown event is a really funny image to me. He keeps protesting and saying he'll just do makeup and bunny ears, or else it'll all rip. However, Dilla (??) Is a single mom. She can figure it out ;)

•I think he'd be well suited to Wish Upon A Star As Well, he'd got all happy over everyone's wishes (and probably livestream the whole thing.

•Nkulu has a ton of fun in the first Halloween event, scaring off Magicam monsters (and reminding his own followers not to be assholes lmao)

•Nkulu is in Vargas Camp 1 and really enjoys the experience. He does get quite annoyed at Vargas, though, lmao.

•Nkulu would be a farmer for Beans Fest and have waaaat too much fun shooting beans at people, lmao

•I can also see Nkulu at the beach event, handling it a lot better than Finn XD. Wow, they're in a lot of events together...

The Golden Enclaves (The Scholomance Book 3) - Spoilers

I've just finished The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik and I need to write my thoughs because I have some opinions XD These are just my thoughs as 20+yo freshly after finishing the series in one go (+listening/reading some opinions on-line). Also english is not my first language so I hope my message won't be lost in traslation.

El is unreliable narrator but she's a great character imo. Yes, she's ulikable, stubborn, 17yo brooding edgelord full of trauma BUT (for me at least) she's an believable on top of all of that. What I mean by that is I can believe that this is what a 17yo girl would sound/think/akt like. That doesn't mean her actions are always right but who doesn't make mistakes (especially when they're a teenager) ? But despite all the trauma she's endured during her stay at the Scholomance as well as before that and loads of self-loathing she's always been a good kid at heart to whom the world/fate has been really unfair. I love her journey throughout the series I truly do even though this journey is just beggining, but that's what's amazing about this character because now evry reader can have their own headcannons about her future. And that's what makes El Higgins one of my favourite characters of all time and makes me love this character!

Orion on the other hand had been made dirty imo. I'm sorry I really wanted to like him but he literally has ZERO personality he's just a depressed mawmouth shaped like a boy who wants to hunt mals and be next to El... It's sad because his whole story is genuinely tragic yet I felt next to nothing while reading it (only after finishing the golden enclaves I've started to think about everything he'd been through...). Also kinda unrelated but WHAT is Orion now? Like is he human enough to idk... get old? Or will he remain a 17yo till the end of Scholomance? On that note if he'll get old like a normal human being then what will happed to Scholomance once he passes away? (I don't expect to ever recive an answer to any of those questions but I am curious about it).

So... what do I think about Orion x El relationship? Well I think it was good for them while they're in Scholomance and (of course) it was crutial for the plot progression. But do I think this has a future? Absolutely not. For the first two book I was authentically rooting for them. They were good for each other and helped each other grow and mature, but reading The Golden Enclaves I couldn't help but play this tiktok sound (the one that goes: "He is not 'the love of your life'! He's literally just a guy. Just hit him with your car!") in my head for most of the Orion-related parts. And while what happened between Orion and El was genuine and beautiful and was working pretty well for the time being but they're teenagers in their first realtionship (that was formed in confined space where death was waiting for them litterally behind every corner and for what they knew they could die in the next 5 minutes, and lets not forget the social structure of small comunity of Scholomance - and while you can find some analogies beteween that to the outer world, they're not the same) and I don't think it'll survive past the point of when their frontal lobe will be fully developed... But I do think they'll remind good friends after that. That's just my opinion!

And that's I'm SO glad that the Liesel x El subplot happened! Some people say it came out of nowhere just to get representation points but I disagree with that sentiment... Don't det me wrong - I didn't saw it comming until the scene in London enclave, but when it happened it cliked for me and everything from The Last Graduate till the end of The Golden Enclaves started making sense... (?) My interpretation of the situation is that El DID notice Liesel in Scholomance and WAS atracted to her (considering that El's our narrator and we only see her version of reality, everything we learn about the world is El's understanging and observations of it - we only know things she considered important enough to describe to the reader AND she considered Liesel to be worthy of describing her multiple times to this degree that we KNOW that during New Year's cleaning El was looking at Liesel's boobs and wasn't complaining about it (she was complaining that Orion wasn't doing the same thing) maybe a the time she wasn't considering herself being attracted to the same sex - it might be because she wasn't quite experienced with social interactions and it was all new to her.. I mean newer than to 'normal' 17yo who's just begining their dating life). The biggest tell for me that El was attracted to Liesel was her reaction when she figured out what Liesel was proposing to her in London. What I also like in golden enclaves is the character development of Liesel herself. Watchin how this prideful, cunning, inteligent and fierce girl starts to care (even deeply) for El and how this relationship catalyzes her own process of healing from all the trauma.

And don't let me get started on thie whole "cheating" discourse... The first time El and Leisel get intimate is when we are sure Orion has been eaten by maw-mouth and the only reason for El to go back to Scholomance is to kill said maw-mouth so Orion along others victims to can die peacefully instead of suffering in eternity. So she's grieving and everyone grieves differently and it's not our place to judge that. The second time on the plane is slightly more complicated but also I wouldn't say it was cheating (I wouldn't even say that El and Orion were dating again at that time... it was more of will-they-wont-they-situationship where Orion specifically asked El to kill him if his mother won't heal him - and we all knew she wouldn't), it was a shitty move tho... Let's remember we're talking about deeply traumatized and mentally fucked-up kids (ok... young adults). I don't condone what El did in that moment but I also try to remember the context of these decisions and I refuse to judge her by my standards (+ I highly doubt that after all of this El never mention to Orion what happened between her and Liesel, just because she didn't do it right away after the events from the book doesn't mean they wouldn't have talked about this - it's just that hiding this information from Orion doesn't sit right with my interpretation of El's character).

El's just a teenage girl who's going through her first love but it doesn't mean she's gonig to close herself from the world just for this boy she met in school (in contrast to her own mother who's the archetype of mourning widow). I just really want to hope that in the case things wouldn't work out between her and Orion it wouldn't be the end of the world for her.

I'd like to believe that what these kids started was a revolution at the core of the rotten magic society and the whole system build on death and suffering, and that the change will come (after some probably long and painful process but IT WILL COME - that's my headcannon and I don't accept any other outcome for my own mental wellbeing XD). But also alongside of the changing/rebuilding world these kids need to heal/grow/change themseves. They've been through some serious shit and need to redefine who they are and find their own place in the new reality. I'd love to read about older versions of our heroes (because I'm 100% sure they won't be the same kids we left at the end of the last book) but I also don't think we'll ever come back to this world to see what happened next with our beloved misfits but I really hope the future will bring more fanfictions, headcannons and other fan-media that will keep this world alive and will allow us to dive in this world once more!

All to all I loved the series! It's not ideal (in many aspects) but overall I've really enjoyed it & sincerely recommend reading it and to shape your own opinion on the matter! Please keep in mind that it's only my interpretation of the series which is based on translation of the books and my personal life experiences and if you disagree with me you are more than welcome to express it (I'd love to see other perspectives) but please don't send hate! Hmmmm, interesting question!

During Frontiers, Amy mentions she plans on sharing "this love" with the world. This is right after that flashback scene where those two Kocos reunite, just before they pass. She also says it'll take her and Sonic far apart.

Two things came to my mind:

One: It seems to me that Amy feels inspired by the type of love that was just shown to her. Amy realizes here that she's got potential to fulfill, a destiny of her own if you will.

Given her passionate, kindhearted and open minded nature, she's got a lot of love to share with the world. By simply being who she is. By letting her heart guide her wherever it leads her. By keeping an open mind to take on challenges, so she can grow as a person and be the change she wants to see in the world. Whatever that may look like. I think everything you mentioned sounds just like her cup of tea! :) She's mentored Cream before, she inspired Shadow to do the right thing on the ARK, she reunited birdie with her siblings, she became friends with a robot and many more things! She is a sucker for true love, fulfilling ones destiny, so yes. I can't picture her going anywhere without her lucky deck of Tarot cards with her. Hehe. That's the great thing about a character like Amy Rose: she's so postive and passionate and caring that whatever she'll end up doing in the future, she'll pour in her heart and soul. One of my friends once mentioned the world would be a better place of there were more people like Amy Rose. I try to remind myself of that when it feels easier and so tempting to be well... a bitch xD rather than doing the kindhearted thing.

Two: In order to explore who she is and to become independent, she needs distance from Sonic (and the others). Sometimes a completely new environment is what you need in order to break with old habits, set new bars, dream new dreams and challenge yourself. It's no secret that Amy has struggled with feeling the lesser one in Team Sonic's company. (If you'd like to read more headcanons about that, I highly recommend looking around in @shadamyheadcanons 's archive. They have written some great stuff about this subject).

I can only imagine good things (amongst some turbulence here and there ;) happen when she does what she's supposed to do.

If you are looking for a more specific 'headcanon', I'd suggest reading my (ongoing) story 'Along the Side of the Road'. Which is basically about Amy running away because she needs space from Sonic. It's a Shadamy story, though, but there are some parallels to your question, I believe.

I did it! (Just, keep in mind, some of this may change in the future, this is what I think makes sense at the current moment. XD)

It'd definitely be an ever-changing answer, I think, but I can give you some typical things for most of the main characters:

Papyrus generally likes to have several spaghetti dishes on hand, as well as any extra bone projects or weapons he's working on, and a book of something he's currently interested in (often puzzles or cooking). He also likes to keep practical things in there as well in case someone needs help, like a sewing/patching kit, face paint/makeup, and as things move more onto the surface, he'll start keeping a human medical kit as well, just in case. Something to write on and with are both important. He also usually has an extra set of clothes for Sans, boots for himself, and then, later, an extra coat for Frisk when it's cold.

Sans, on the other hand, doesn't keep much in the box for a while. He was perpetually losing/not having phones for a long time and he can teleport, so most of his stuff is usually stuffed into his pockets, ribcage, or left in his room. However, over time, he might keep whatever he's reading in there, as well as some prank items like whoopie cushions, and a few repair items and drinks. He often carries some sort of book or magazine about a seemingly unusual topic, but it'll turn out it's either something that lends itself well to wordplay or a topic someone close to him is really interested in.

Undyne switches her stuff out depending on whether she's on patrol or not. Work Undyne has a lot of utilitarian stuff in case someone gets in trouble out in Waterfall, like ropes, healing items, plants that act as floatation devices, etc etc. However, because of the current state of her gauntlets, it's sort of hard for her to actually use the phone while wearing them, so she keeps the floatation plants on the top slots so she can just mash the screen to get them out easily in an emergency. Otherwise, she typically keeps some headphones for music, some manga, drinks, and some extra weapons in storage. She often has strange or interesting items from the dump that she thinks someone she knows would get use out of.

Alphys's phone has all kinds of gadgets inside, like stuff to reattune devices, a laptop, sometimes power crystals, a magic screwdriver, and pieces of interesting scrap. A lot of her main projects are all kept in her workspace and so is her collection of manga and anime, so unless she's currently reading/watching them, those'll be at home. She also keeps earphones with her, chips, soda, and, since she’s been travelling to Snowdin more frequently, sometimes a scarf and mittens with warming magic inside of them. She’s kind of a homebody, though, and doesn’t really go out all that much without other people, so she typically packs pretty specifically for every thing she goes to.

Toriel is still getting used to carrying a phone with her. She only carries some emergency supplies inside. Everyone keeps reminding her she can put big things in the phone but she still forgets to do it sometimes and just packs a bag.

Asgore typically keeps a bunch of candy, a full tea set, a tin of cookies, and a box or two of tea (usually one of Undyne’s) inside his phone. Other things he likes to carry, he stashes in his cloak instead when he’s all dressed up in his King regalia, which is normally what he would wear out and about. He’s a little old fashioned as well and usually likes to just carry things.

Asriel mostly keeps food in his phone, usually packaged snacks, sometimes baked goods. He also likes to keep a handheld gaming system, and eventually some crystals and some seeds for specific purposes. Other than that, it changes a lot so its tough to nail down. 

Frisk likes to keep a couple things close, usually practical stuff or things that can be useful for puzzles: a notepad or small journal, sometimes a sturdy stick, something with a narrow end like a screwdriver or a metal nail-file (or Papyrus’s utility knife), and the old CD player and headphones that she got from Undyne. A magic book or two will definitely join those regular things. She sometimes ends up collecting things that she finds that could be useful for putting other things together. She also usually carries some extra food, often fruit or canned tea, and sometimes also has a handheld gaming system like Asriel does. She used to always keep the scarf Papyrus made her in there when she wasn’t using it, but she gave it away. This will probably be replaced at some point.

Gaster just got a phone with a box and hasn’t used it much yet, chances are it’ll just be filled to the brim with books.

A few more magic tools will probably join everyone’s regular items in the future. And, of course, everyone can keep their gold in there easily, though that doesn’t take up the same kind of item slot or anything. :3

It seems I cannot tell you too much and things are a little confused still as for now: I'm sensing that timing and how you're supposed to act are of a certain importance for you to meet them so... let's see. It seems they may ask you about something maybe while you're out with friends? Or something like that. It seems you may already know them, on a certain level at least... They may take you by surprise and this may somehow trigger something in you (from a past experience, but I think it's just about letting go of control issues from your side). Again you cannot know too much as it has to go in a certain way for it to work. Just don't stress on this, it'll go better than you think as they'll help you get over this problem as well.

For Ava and Jonas, they've worked together off and on for years now (based on current timeline they've known each other for a good 25 years at this point I think. what year are we in around 26atc or something? yea about 25 years then). They were assigned to work together for a mission early after Ava had become an agent. She didn't think she'd get along with him since she tends to be very focused about her work and he seemed to be a bit more flippant, but they ended up making a good team and became fast friends. They didn't start dating until around when ziost gets ashed, but had a bit of a mutual crush they just never really explored prior to that. (though they had at times played the fake dating card for jobs here and there over the years)

For Ava, she likes how outgoing and personable he is and how he makes her feel more comfortable talking with others outside of a work situation, that's what caught her eye initially. She also thinks he has a nice butt. XD For Jonas, initially it was her looks that drew him to her, but he really came to love who she was and especially likes how earnest she is, and how she pushes to try and do the right thing even if it'll make her some enemies along the corporate ladder. (getting on garza's shitlist is like a badge of honor at this point lol).

If you ask her her work is her hobby, but truly she enjoys baking (she used to help her mother when she was young and it reminds her of her childhood, and she enjoys just making things with people she cares about so that of course includes Jonas) and collecting things, tchotchkes mostly. so she likes to spend date night wining and dining and checking out the little shops around whatever planet they're on. Finding things to send home to her mother or siblings or little gifts to give to jonas if they're apart.

For the Hawke siblings (I think you're meaning Ava and Mikael since the rest of the questions have been about her, but Nora and Trey are also involved so 2 birds) For Ava, Mikael and their other 2 siblings (Krea and Laura) they usually gather for the holidays with their mother on Coruscant. They'll catch up, share stories, exchange gifts and take a chance to spend time together as a family and not worry about the galaxy tearing itself apart for a few days. Most of the traditions are about spending time with one another, since their father was often off planet a lot, Life Day tended to be the only day they would be able to regularly spend with him so it usually ended up being a big to-do and they would try and get all sorts of stories of the planets he'd seen out of him. Since he disappeared they kept up the tradition of sharing stories over a fresh meal and just spending time as a family. The kids all pitch in with cooking and bringing food so it ends up like a potluck with all sorts of dishes to pick from. Ava does invite Jonas but he can't always attend depending on the timing of missions but he still tries to make an appearance, and Mikael has been bringing Nora and Lyra since they were officially wed (thought they had to be careful during the class stories part of the timeline because, well, Nora was the empire's wrath haha) and in recent years Nora's been bringing her brother and niece along as well!

CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of death of a parent, depression of the other parent, and the resulting childhood trauma for this whole question

Definitely, 100% sure, her mother's death, all the stuff that lead up to it (which I talked about in this post and in this other post, which are both asks) and all the stuff that happened because of it (read: her father growing terribly depressed, then getting sick and not being able to work, then Astala herself getting sick, and later Astala having to work way sooner than she thought bc suddenly her father was the sole provider for the family and it wasn’t enough)

On one hand bc it's the single biggest traumatic event for Astala (the fight with the archdemon and the encounter with the broodmother are close seconds, but at that point she is older and has more ressources and help to deal with them. And she left those two encounters victorious, more or less. Her mother's disappearance was a massive blow that had her struggling to stand afterwards)

On the other, however, it would've been so amazing for her to have her mom backing her up in the matter with Vaughan, the matter with the Blight and keeping the Alienage and her family safe while Astala ventured out into the world. Adaia would've been a huge help by simply being there for her when she came back from the broodmother or the archdemon with the words of wisdom of one who had already been fighting for decades and who knew Astala very, very well

Oh this! This is a lovely question

Astala can be quite verbal and verbally expressive. It's probably a habit she's learned over the course of her life bc things get much easier for her when she can just talk about them directly (Nelaros gets to suffer that. In a shameful act of self-promotion, I'll link the chapter of my fanfic where Astala sits him down for A Talk (you already know the chapter, wild-houseplant, but I thought it might be appropriate for the convenience of others))

That means that she's the person who will try to awkwardly reassure you through words ("It'll be fine! You'll see"). She knows it doesn't always work. It doesn't even work for her most of the times (it tends to put her in a worse mood, in fact), but it's what comes to easiest to her, especially if she's not familiar with the person to be reassured and/or physical contact is not an option

But also what she does most is ask you to tell her about the problem. First, because that alone can help, but second, because it helps het as much as the other person. She likes to know what's going on if somebody's feeling down. She also likes to jump directly into possible solutions, but has learned over time that sometimes (many times) simply listening is the way to go

Physical touch would be her second choice if verbal comfort is not available (for whatever reason). A hug, a hand on a shoulder, a ruffling of the hair, a squeeze of the hand, a bump with the shoulder, Astala has means and ways to show care physically. She is also, however, very keenly aware that people don't always want to be touched and thus errs on the side of caution

The third option, if she can't reach the person in question verbally or physically, would be to take care of their stuff. Hand them an extra big slice of bread with their meal. Pester them to go to sleep early. Take over some kind of chore they had to do

If all else fails, she'll hover. She'll be watching, alert and ready, in case something (anything) happens and she can do something (anything) to help. She gets restless when the people she likes aren't okay and don't let her help

As for how others would show her they care, here's a handy dandy non-conclusive list:

Cyrion has brought Astala plums and other little things she likes to cheer her up more than once. He's not big on the physical, but leans more towards words of comfort and advice.

Adaia always made time for her daughter. She would listen without comment, not offer advice unless asked directly, and simply hug the hell out of Astala

Shianni likes to take her under her wing for a change when Astala's having a rough time. She'll get her out of the house or otherwise think of something that'll distract her. She's also very much one for hugs

Soris will offer his time and company to Astala. He'll also patiently allow her to talk through whatever is going on in her mind at the moment. He himself will be mostly silent during these conversations

Alistair will make jokes. So many jokes. He'll genuinely try to cheer her up by being silly. As the story progresses, he will also start taking over some of the duties that come with leading the companions. AND he'll make sure Astala rests when she gets sick (he’s one of the only ones capable to out-argue her when she insists that she’s not sick)

Morrigan will scoff and huff and offer sarcastic comments about how Astala's mood is ruining the day, but she will also watch her back very intently, especially if Astala's having trouble with human men. She'll provide a slice of (her brand of) cold, hard realism if Astala is getting lost in intense emotions of long duration

Leliana will listen and talk. She and Astala play off well against one another. Leliana is genuinely interested in what Astala has to tell and is generous with her enthusiasm (both over things that excite her and things that excite Astala)

Zevran's first choice of comfort is, I think, physical. It might be a full-blown hug, it might be a caress, it might be a simple, fleeting touch. He's very good at assessing how much is desired and what is needed. He offers a sympathetic ear of the kind that validates the experience that is being shared. He keeps an eye on Astala, making sure she takes good care of herself. He stands right next to her when things get tough, lets her know as much as possible that she can rely on him. And he works so hard to make it work, to make them work, to learn how to bear his issues and shortcomings with grace and how to forgive and love hers. He tries to be more verbally expressive, because it's Astala's first choice of communicating and she's trying to be better at not heckling him and giving him space when he needs it

Ho boy. Hooooooooo boy this is THE question. Thank you so much for asking this I'm so excited!!!!!! That's also why I left it for last (and why I took so long with this XD XD XD) Let's go!! And for this lovely question, you even get a snippet of one moment vere Astala dresses up fancy, probably for the Landsmeet (it had to happen. It just had to. I can’t write this story without leaving Zevran absolutely gobsmacked at some point)

Zevran stepped up directly behind Alistair and looked up.

“Alright, alright, I’ll show off,” Astala said begrudgingly, and, noticing him, gave him a small grimace before she made her way down the stairs.

Zevran, meanwhile, had to remind himself to breathe.

His Warden had pulled her hair up. What held the dark curls in place, he did not know, but they showed off her neck and strong shoulders. Said shoulder were bare, in the style of dress common among the Fereldan city elves. Stiff linen formed the wide and straight collar, shimmering silk billowed with every step and shone like liquid metal, gauze bunched up at the armholes of the otherwise sleeveless dress and spilled out over Astala’s arms, surround them and presumably re-attach to the dress at the back. Scars old and new littered her skin, some of them light lines and patches, others dark spots; each of them spoke to the warrior she was. Zevran couldn’t help but think back to how she had looked after leaving Orzammar: sick, bent over, eyes dull and surrounded by dark circles. How different from the woman before him, who stood tall and strong, who smiled to herself as she ran her hands over her dress, whose eyes spoke of determination, of a thirst for justice, and who turned towards him, tilted her head, and asked: “How do I look?”

Zevran tried to put his thoughts into words. She looked like a wave breaking over a ship to drag its crew with her. She was a cool lake in the mountains on a hot summer day. She was the vast, star-dotted night sky and the storm clouds mounting up on the horizon. He could’ve gone on for a long time; Maker knew words usually came easily to him. And yet, his tongue was tied.

Hi there!! No worries, I don't find this weird at all :D And thanks for reminding me that was in my bio, it's been there for years but in a few weeks it'll no longer be true and I'll have to change it XD

I have been writing this much (if not as prolifically) since I was 14/15 though, and that's mainly because it sounds like I had an advantage compared to you. I was actually talking to my sister this morning about different types of school we have in the UK and long story (and angry rant) short, my secondary school was really, really chill. I had homework. There were a few clubs I went to. But it finished every day at 15:05 and I went home at 17:00 at the latest and I had the evenings and weekends free. Compared to a lot of my friends who went to different schools to me, that was a lot of free time.

Plus, I was lucky to be a fast writer. When I started out I could write about 1k in an hour. Now, if I'm working at average speed and writing consistently, I can do 1k in 20 minutes. Plus, I retrained myself a few years ago with online typing games so I could type faster (and properly. I used to online type with my index fingers, and that was both slow aaaand I was starting to injure them). So I just happen to have that speed advantage which meant I could take advantage of my spare time.

And finally, you mentioned school and family and extracurriculars and community service. I had one or two volunteering roles, and one or two ECs, but they took maybe 4-6 hours a week max. Writing was my main hobby. My friends mainly met up at the weekend, and I wrote in the evenings. My family knew that and didn't bother me during writing hours (and I was also lucky to be in a household that didn't need me 24/7. When my parents had illness or operations and such, my writing time was affected! They needed me around the house more). Contrast this with my time since September, which was my second year at uni but the first where stuff is actually on, post-lockdown. I was running around like a headless chicken trying to figure out what I wanted to do and what time I wanted to keep for myself and was all around exhausted - and though, bc I'm a fast writer, my output didn't necessarily show it, I didn't spend much time writing! Which was frustrating, because writing is a super important way of relaxing for me. But I didn't have the time for the first time ever, and that was stuff I'd chosen for myself, let alone actual commitments.

I am a strict timekeeper - I love planning my days to the minute - and I am fairly good at self-discipline, so when I was 15 and said "my new year's resolution is to write every single day", I did it. Saying to myself that the evening from about 7pm to 9pm was my writing time was really helpful, and I defended it. But overall, I was in a lucky situation in that I was able to have that time to defend at all. (Moving away and having to cook for myself, which could take all evening, made it difficult as well.)

TL;DR: Basically, I write fast, and I was lucky. I did have the time, because there was plenty of other stuff I was lucky not to have to do, and so when I set myself a daily challenge I had the time to do it. It was circumstantial just as much as it was time management skills. Though I do pride myself on timekeeping, and it was useful, it wasn't super important. Not everyone has the time to write every day - I don't anymore, not during the semester, though thankfully I'm on holiday now - and that's alright.
