Apparently I've lost all ability to watch movies/TV where I don't already know the plot. I watch very little TV and movies to start with, and the little that I do watch tends to be things I've seen before, or very low-stakes genres like sitcoms. With books, you can rush through tense sections, and you aren't at the mercy of the pacing and sound design and all the other emotionally manipulative techniques that a show can use.
So now when I'm watching things with any kind of tension whatsoever, my nerves are stretched to the breaking point, and I don't know if I can take this.
#random thought of the day#decided to start watching skeleton crew#because star wars meets the goonies is such a perfect concept that it should have been done in the actual '80s#and so far it's proving me right#however!#things keep happening!#and even though this show is made for actual children!#and it's in a predictable genre!#the fact that i don't know what's going to happen beat-by-beat has me under so much stress!#this is why i like spoilers apparently!#i'm used to reading *about* things long before i start actually watching them#so knowing comparatively little is a new concept#also! i tried elsbeth!#the quirky procedural that's so formulaic i'm already sick of the formula!#but that first ep was shockingly stressful!#i know she's going to catch him! that's how detective shows work!#but i can't see beat-for-beat how she's going to pull it off!#and i can't handle any plot uncertainty apparently!#it's so stupid why is my brain like this?

The Heart Killers: Predictions (Kant as Bison's Keys to Freedom)
Welcome to the first of my speculative brain dumps on this couple. The updated trailer has had my brain theorising like crazy.
Khao has mentioned a few times now that Bison was adopted into his family, and killing essentially became his way of life. Kant then comes along and becomes Bison's escape - a welcome distraction from the violent life he leads.
Whether Kant's undercover objective it to scope for dirt or to take the brothers down, it's through this mission that Kant begins to sympathise with Bison and the circumstances that led him to become a hitman. His feelings will ultimately compromise or derail his original objective. Once everything is out in the open, this doesn't seem to deter Kant. If anything, it only doubles down his resolve to protect Bison from harm. "I just need to know I'll always be with you." "You think I'd go on living if you died?"
We've been told that Kant goes goo-goo eyed for Bison pretty early on. My hunch is that once he finds out the type of life Bison is swept up in and just how dangerous it is, his personal mission will be to try and free him: "I'll help you start over". And if he can't free him in the immediate effect, he'll join him in order to watch his back. "We'll take care of each other. This isn't just an empty promise." Based on the fact he was asked to help with detective work in the first place, Kant must have some pretty handy skills in his arsenal, and likely knows a thing or two about survival.
On that basis, perhaps the real conflict for these two won't be the getting things out into the open, but what Bison chooses to do for his freedom. We don't yet know whether he’s on good terms with his adoptive family. It could very well be that he simply doesn't want to kill, but has too much gratitude towards them for taking him in, that he could never disobey or defy them.
So when Kant tries to find him an out or whisk him away - Bison will then have a choice to make. To leave with Kant, or side with his family. Staying would also mean exposing Kant (who seems eager to protect him) to the same violence he's desperate to leave behind, which may further complicate things. "With the way I live, I can't promise you anything." (I could die tomorrow).
The other thing I would be wary of is in order to 'free' Bison in some way, shape or form (from his supposed crimes and lifestyle), Kant may have to sacrifice or offer something in exchange. Considering he's the one tasked to investigate the two brothers (in order to put them behind bars, I would assume), there's a poetic irony if he turns out to be the key to Bison's freedom. Hearing how Khao loves Kant as a character also speaks volumes to me about his role in the story and what he means to Bison. But I may just be letting my mind run riot.
(Note: very interesting shot in the trailer below. To me, it almost looks like they're doing a 'training' exercise for something. Bison with his gun on Kant whilst he jumps into the sea tied up).
Narratively speaking, I’m not sure how this all of fits into a romcom of all things but I have a feeling Jojo is going to surprise us with his hijinks. Let’s wait and see!

I made some joke a while back about like marriage and how if Carmy had Sydney sign a partnership agreement that'd basically be marriage because he's legally binding them. And that was a joke about like if that happened offscreen.
But now the trailer came out and he's having her sign a partnership agreement...as like a major plot point 💀
#marriage but not but still legal?#eddie diaz moment#sydcarmy#sydcarmy memes#sydcarmy predictions#i have a havit of doing this thing#where i forget that romance as a genre and subgenre actually exists#and then i make jokes about like haha imagine [romantic trope] or [scenario to advance their romantic relationship] lmao imagine#and then they come true and i'm like#oh shit that's right#the writers are also trying to move them towards that#like it was not a prediction in the slightest it was a JOKE#“imagine they were romantic” meanwhile they literally are#the bear#the bear season 3

Came here because of your FMA Post-Canon GreedLing series and now I want to read/watch/idfk what this is SVSSS now. You've infected me and now I need to do research

YESSS READ MY SICKOS NOVEL!!
my very basic pitch: SVSSS is Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, a Chinese transmigration novel! the premise is that Shen Yuan is the #1 anti-fan of a trashy stallion novel -- he likes the monsters and the little crumbs of plot and loves the protagonist, but fucking hates literally everything else about it. when he finishes it, he's so overcome with rage about the ending that it literally kills him, and his dying thoughts are "dumbfuck author, dumbfuck novel." much to his surprise, he wakes up as the central villain of that novel with a transmigration system essentially telling him "you think you can do better? just fucking try it buddy"
it's a hilarious series, and a very quick read! the characters are really fun, the two main characters are completely deranged (a classic example of "I can fix him" *makes him worse*), and the balance between ridiculous humor and genuine emotion is excellent. also, as a loving satire of stallion novels/BL novels/webnovels in general, it has a lot of interesting things to say about the tropes embedded in those stories, as well as interesting things to say about being a writer and being a reader!
there are official print translations in English, so I recommend checking out your local library/bookstores, but if that doesn't work for you, it's also available on the Internet Archive and Anna's Archive! it's fairly short, only four books (three for the main plot + fourth book of plot-relevant extras)
enjoy!!
#asks#frostfire425#sorry for the long response i just get very excited when i get to pitch this series!!!#it is DERANGED and i love it so much#I would categorize it as like. 80% comedy 20% every other genre#like mostly very very funny because sqq is a hysterical pov character whose inner monologue is a complete mess#and then the other 20% is a mix of romance and tragedy and horror#I call it a loving satire because while it is criticizing a lot of common tropes (mostly those found in male power fantasy novels)#it also very clearly is coming from someone who loves webnovels and reads a lot of them and understands them well enough to critique them#my beloved ridiculous dick joke novel that has genuinely interesting things to say about gender and power and consent and agency and trauma#slkdjfdlksjf anyway. i need to stop before i go off on a tangent#I suppose I should give a quick warning before you start it: this is technically a teacher/student romance#HOWEVER!! trust me. that is not an issue here.#I usually do not like teacher/student stuff and so I was very hesitant to start this series#so trust me when I say that most of the issues with teacher/student romances are not present here#the teacher is completely oblivious to his student's feelings until said student is like 25 and hasn't been his student for like 7 years#the age gap is also irrelevant because. well. you'll see sdlkjflksdjf#by the end of the novel they're only like a year apart. it's stupid <3#but yeah i went into it cautiously because i'd heard it was Problematic™#but turns out most of the problematic things i'd heard about weren't even ultimately relevant#and the main couple were actually even weirder about each other in ways i could never have predicted sdlkjfdlksjf#they are FREAK4FREAK and i love this for them#okay i need to stop talking about this stupid novel#GO READ IT!! IT'S FUN

it really irks me when people pan perfectly good movies for being "predictable". is it fun to watch a movie that keeps you guessing? for sure! but you only have to watch sherlock or moffat's run in dr who or the last season of game of thrones to know that wild plot twists do not equate to media actually like... being good. in the same way, a narrative that lets the viewer put together the clues before the reveal isn't bad just because you can guess what's going to happen! not every movie has be m night fucking shyamalan!
#this is in response to a bunch of reviews of crimson peak#'baa waaaa this Gothic Horror movie is predictable' THAT'S!!! THE POINT!!!! OF THE GENRE!!!! YOU MORON!!!!#Gothic horror isn't about mystery and last minute plot reveals it's about TENSION and INEVITABILITY#irl

The trouble with discussing the s2 reunion expectations vs reality that I rarely see anyone mention is that nobody(?) predicted it would happen with Ed completely powerless, knocked out of his position by a mutiny that essentially killed him, so there's still a huge variable to take into consideration when talking about people "getting it wrong".
Like, yes, we can discuss it from a Doylist perspective - Jenkins chose to have it happen that way, rather than having Ed and Stede meet again when Ed was capable of saying anything to him, and what does it mean that the fandom largely didn't consider that as a potential dramatic scenario.
But conversely, the fact that he did choose to do that means that we still have no idea how it would have gone in the circumstances involved in most reunion fics - if Stede made it back to Ed before he'd successfully committed suicide by crew. Given his choice to push Stede away through most of Fun and Games, I think people who wrote him as hostile weren't far off, actually! But there's no way of knowing how hostile he might have been, or if he'd have completely snapped out of it.
(TBH I also think it's a bad idea to assume that scenarios people write fic about = their expectations for canon, but that's a different matter.)
#this isn't a subtweet of any specific meta i just feel like I've seen several of them#and as someone who wrote multiple reunion fics that failed to predict Ed's death#they make me feel a bit shitty tbh! sorry for not being psychic#the only reunion fics I didn't like were the ones where Stede came back and was upset about Izzy lol#i love the genre and i hope we keep writing aus of it#i should write out a full post on that last bit but the tldr is that we're all writing what we find narratively satisfying#and the majority of us know that thats not necessarily going to line up with canon#which is what makes it extra fun when you hit something they end up doing#ofmd#ofmd meta

i was talking to a friend who said she was visiting la with her partner a while back, and at the time i was like "oh wow, are you sure you want to go? the us is kind of dodgy right now"
and she was like "ahh no it'll be fine! :)"
anyway they went, and, couldn't leave their hotel bc of the protests, and then the curfew, so they didn't really do anything. and then they went back home.
#it's a bit unfortunate bc i would like to visit my family in the us sometimes but#not for the foreseeable future... i have such an extremely muslim sounding name lmao#also i'd feel obligated to wipe my phone and laptop beforehand and that's such a hassle#and carney's predictably turning into a bootlicking stooge so his border security stuff is equally bad and intrusive 💀#thanks for coming to my ted talk. what a time to be alive#it's not nearly as bad as what others are experiencing but i have to say the post 9/11 style Jokes About Surveillance™️ are really back#a rich vein of comedy of course but i would prefer to have different material#whenever joe biden dies (thoughts and prayers) i will have more genres of jokes to make and it will be novel and hilarious ✊

Okay so, this just got dropped right?
youtube
Listened to it, did some stuff and then checked the comment section and someone was saying they were showing clips from Season 2. I thought to myself, "there's no fuckin way?" So I went and watched it again a little more closely and I shit you not, that comment was right.
THE COMMENT WASN'T LYING THEY ARE SHOWING CLIPS FOR SEASON 2!!!!!!! THE LONG HAIR LOOKS GOOD ON YOU DANTE BUT I HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS!!!!!
GLAD TO SEE YOU UN-WINTER SOLDIERED BUT WHAT IS GOING ON?!?!!??! THAT GUN! IS THAT WHAT I THINK IT IS?!
Yep! that's them! Sick! he got Ebony & Ivory!
Oh look, Vash got his .45 back
Hmm, if they are bringing this name back, I wonder if Dante is actually on the run in this iteration. Like he escaped DARKCOM and took on a new name to try to get his stuff back, the amulet and the sword, and to go look for his brother. Though that makes me wonder if he's gonna do what his dear old pops Sparda did and seal the Demon realm away from the human realm because of the way humans are being. Like hey, maybe it was better to have them separated for everyone's sakes.
One thing that's kinda proving this theory is as I'm scrolling through the clips frame by frame, I can't see the amulet anywhere. Nor his sword.
However somebody did come up in the background of one of those clips. (Sent to me by a friend this time)
Hey Lady, what you up to? So either they let him out and he goes under a fake name or this is post Dante escape and she's with him now. Either way, she is here in the hat, which means he is either on a leash and we'll get some grand escape later. Which gives her more time to develop her character. Oooorrrrrrrrr, you get the point. Either way, they are doing something here and I like it.
So I dunno, either way, I'm fucking hyped for the new season. LET ADI COOK YOU COWARDS! LET THE MAN COOK!
#anyways I need the new season YESTERDAY!#I'm so fucking excited#If I got anything wrong its because I haven't actually sat down and played the games outside of watching a few video essays on the franchis#though this anime is making me want to play the games so bad despite being terrible at games outside the sandbox genre#Anyways here's a few random predictions based on the clips I saw#Glad to see mah boy is no longer the Winter Soldier#devil may cry#netflix devil may cry#dmc dante#dante dmc#ld speaks#Youtube

two guys just fucked too hard and one gets pregnant and hes like
wtf but im a man!!! im a FREAK
and then doesnt tell the other one and the other one also doesnt know whats happening
whats it called? im gonna draw that somehow
is there a yuri equivalent? not like futanari GASP suddenly grew a dick
id assume some stupid shit like they finger eachother but the skin cells somehow become super powered and fertilize the egg
OR SOMETHING
i need to study this
#my favorite part was those fics where the pregnant guy keeps getting misdiagnosed because nobody in the verse couldve ever predicted this#ooooooooooooh remember when yaoi fanfic used to be like one guy likes the other guy and it like. but its statistically improbable that hes-#and then just suffers for absolutely no reason#i need to read more yaoi im so out of touch whats hot in the genre these days

Night School (Terror Eyes, 1981)
"There's been another killing."
"Mmm."
"That doesn't seem to surprise you."
"When man kills for the sake of killing, there's no reason why he should stop."
"Do you really believe that man can go out and kill, just like that?"
"Why not? You see, animals kill when they're hungry or when they're threatened. But man is the only animal who destroys his own kind for the sheer pleasure of it."
#night school#terror eyes#1981#video nasty#slasher film#american cinema#ken hughes#ruth avergon#leonard mann#rachel ward#drew snyder#joseph r. sicari#nick cairis#karen macdonald#annette miller#bill mccann#margo skinner#elizabeth barnitz#holly hardman#brad fiedel#an intermittently stylish but tonally mismatched slasher from perhaps the busiest year for big screen splatter icons. this was almost bound#to get lost in the onslaught of horror classics that 81 saw‚ but it isn't helped by the weird way it melds its sleazy giallo inspirations#with a tv movie style romantic drama theme. a bizarre final project for director Hughes‚ who'd come up doing quota quickies in the UK and#had no real horror experience; he was a last minute replacement for Alfred Sole‚ who walked off the project. Ward was more or less#an unknown newcomer at this point but in a couple of years she'd be a screen icons with The Thorn Birds. there's some nicely executed#scenes of suspense here‚ and a delightful playfulness at times (there's a 'where will the severed head be' tease in one scene which goes on#so long it almost becomes absurd) but the plotting is old hat and the big twists very predictable. not without its fun moments#but simultaneously this was never going to be a game changer in a genre which was already beginning to suffer from over exposure

i have to stop reading domestic thrillers aka missing suburban women novels. every time i'm like well these are easy reads and it will only take a couple hours and it might not be bad this time :) and then upwards of half the time it's just straight up bad. i'm like charlie brown with the football.
#i just need to keep reading books published by the few authors whose works in this genre i have read and previously liked#as opposed to getting repeatedly burned by either dumb plot twists#at least the most recent one actually mixed it up by not having a dumb out of nowhere plot twist and just being incredibly predictable

Looking into that (currently unreleased) yunyun syndrome game by the needy girl devs, and it says it's a rhythm game all about denpa songs.
So I finally looked up what denpa songs are like
That rhythm game is going to be so fucked to play
