Not much close up of their faces on this one but many more to come on the last part. At first I was dreading the coloring but lately I've been finding a lot of peace in my monochromes and it's nice to experiment with textures.

i've had this pathologic 3/quarantine post sitting in the drafts for ages that criticizes sanity mechanics as a concept (i think they're generally worse at generating ludonarrative harmony compared to physical health mechanics). but i didn't want to just be critical, so i've also been thinking for awhile about what i think could be added to really improve the game's sanity system and make the mechanic more interesting.

basically, i think that high mania/apathy should have an actual impact on gameplay that isn't just "your health meter starts decreasing" or "you can't start dialogue until you normalize your psychosis meter" or "a craaaazy glitch filter appears over your vision". these just feel like inconveniences, they don't instill the type of visceral desperation in the player that is necessary for this to work as the game's new sole survival mechanic. my biggest suggestion for how to make the sanity mechanic feel more visceral would be to allow the bachelor to start conversations even at high levels of mania or apathy, but with his mental state influencing how he behaves in conversation. grey out the friendly, cooperative dialogue options, so that the player can see the potential to choose a diplomatic option, but can't select it. force the player to choose the worst, most aggravated responses instead when dankovsky is under stress. and of course, if he's being an asshole, then the people he's talking to should withhold key information about potential clues or locations where he could access resources. life gets harder.

but then i realized i was just reinventing depression quest but as a walking simulator.

ooooooh I think it might be unpopular but I almost like it?? Bear with me bear with me

Not because I necessarily think Sirius did get all of the girls, though. I personally choose to view Sirius as AroAce or gay, but the idea he’s not doesn’t bother me (nor do I think this line really challenges that).  

I reckon Remus is absolutely right that if Sirius wanted to, he could, like he had people fawning all over him, but he’s not looking. Take Snape’s Worst Memory for example. Multiple times, girls are said to be looking at him, and he’s only paying attention to James both times. Positive attention is thrown at Sirius’ feet, and he barely pays attention to it. If he wanted the girls, guys, and anyone else, he could have them. 

Then, on the other hand, and the reason I almost like this line, you have Remus, who is…well, average at least to his own mind. He’s not as popular, or smart, or good-looking (or even as tall) as Sirius is said to be — and he’s made his peace with that, most of the time it seems. He’ll praise James and Sirius without envy… until this moment. Until it’s Tonks who might be another thing that Sirius has beaten him at. 

Then, despite himself, the bitterness and envy comes out — made worse by the fact that if it was Sirius Tonks fancied, he could have her without any of the sense of shame that Remus is currently battling with (y’know with the whole thing Pottermore goes into just after this line with him throwin ghimself into dangerous missions after ‘a crushing sense on duty’ lead him to reject Tonks despite how much he’s ‘smitten’ with her.) This universe in which Remus says this line is also one where "Remus had never been in love before", so there's even more of a sting for him over Tonks.

That Remus has a moment of 'typical, of course you like him' is really good for his character development. He’s mostly without envy at ‘normal people’, but he’s human, so of course there’s some and of course this would be the situation he feels envy for. 

BUT I really do mean ALMOST like it.

Despite enjoying what this line was attepting to do, I have to block it from my mind because the idea that Remus thinks Tonks fancies their ‘first cousin once removed’ is too fucking weird for me. It’s batshit when Harry does it in HBP and it’s batshit here too. Yes, I know Tonks and Sirius are technically distantly related enough that they could get together under UK law,but that is still way too related for me.

So I take the essence of it (at least Remus’ feelings behind it) and mentally pretend they’re talking about someone else equally as hot as Sirius.

Close call having to explain Joker Out to my father after he remarked on how cool my laptop keys were (they glow) and then saw my screen background: a homemade Souvenir Pop themed layout. Bless this man; he couldn't read the font I used and did not inquire any further besides, "Is that a band?"

I know a lot of people here are so invested and obsessed with their interests that they HAVE to talk about them with everyone they're close with, but is there anyone who is absolutely mortified to talk to people about things they're obsessed with?

Like, I wouldn't be able to explain Joker Out well enough to him to understand why I felt the need to put this "band" as my background, ya know? And I can't even use the excuse, "Oh, I just like their tunes" because he'd look them up and wonder how on earth I found them because, genuinely, the likelihood of me ever finding them is one in a million. He'd look up their eurovision performance and have to watch Bojan lick the camera, and I'd just have to accept that. That is what stopped me from getting into them for five months after finding them. What if he got it twisted and thought I liked that?! Mortified.

I will never forgive Bojan for this. If my father ever recalls this conversation, I'm gonna need financial compensation.

This may be a moment of weakness, but I'm starting to have more sympathy with female separatists.

"Women are people and deserve the same rights as you" didn't work. The first generation of men to see first-hand that equal rights means they won't get a wife/mommy/slave went hard right.

50% of marriages end in divorce. 70% of divorces are initiated by women. For every 2 divorced men who want to remarry, there's only 1 divorced woman who wants to remarry. 1/3 of men 18 - 24 haven't had sex in the last year.

Men are better off with you barefoot and pregnant. And they know it.

The incentives and opportunities for men to enslave women are just too strong. I don't know what to do about this.
