i need to hear your reasoning on janet coming back and also what you think will / want to happen when she does

Oh boy. Okay, to be completely honest based on Finknoriams' writing, in my heart of hearts I don't think she is going to come back. From a narrative perspective by all rules of how to write a plot, she should, but Fink and Cranor haven't been interested in following the rules of plot for a long time and Brie Williams only became an official writer after that season was already over. And they also said on Patreon that Janet Varney was only booked for a limited number of voice spots as Lubelle. So don't expect her to come back again based on one dyke on Tumblr saying she should. If she does ever return it will likely be years from now when they bring back older material, like what's happening now with Kevin.

However, they SHOULD bring her back, and here's why and here's what I want to happen.

Buckle up.

Narratively, the University of What It Is arc was just unsatisfying. The first time they were ever mentioned was all the way back in year three, when a faculty member named Sylvia Kayyali came to Night Vale while Carlos was in the Desert Otherworld. She told Cecil that Carlos had been missing for several decades. At the time, this seemed to fit into the whole idea of "time doesn't work in Night Vale", especially with the later reveal that time doesn't work in the Desert Otherworld but like, even more so. Except when Janet arrived, she didn't seem to think Carlos had been missing for years. She didn't even seem that interested in Carlos when she first arrived.

Janet's introduction came in the form of a post-credit voicemail, where she said that Kareem Nazari got in touch with the UOWII to tell them about Night Vale. Why would Kareem need to do that if they already knew what Night Vale was? Secondly, when Kayyali came to town over seven years ago, she said that her University had no science department aside from Carlos and ever since he left there were no scientists on staff. So how could Dr. Janet Lubelle, a dedicated scientist with a huge research team, have not only materialized in the University's staff but also become interim dean of their new branch over the course of just seven years?

In writing, there's premise and then there's plot. Sometimes the two don't line up. Take something like Repo the Genetic Opera as an example. The concept of that musical is a world where people can finance their organs from a large corporation called Geneco, which will repossess those organs if the lender doesn't pay. That's a really interesting premise, and the story could use it to talk about Capitalism and the insurance industry. However, the story isn't interested in those things, and it uses its premise as more of a backdrop for the actual story, which is a family drama and a coming-of-age. Just because a writer sets up a premise for their story doesn't necessarily mean that the premise needs to be explored in great depth.

Or, to use another example, take Breaking Bad. When Walter decides he'll start cooking meth for Gus Fring, there's already a lab built, and Gus already has a huge distribution system that he can easily plug Walter into. How he built that lab and got connected to this system isn't really important to the plot, because the plot can't continue if he doesn't have it. He has it because he needs to have it. But the story carefully gives us enough glimpses into Gus's past, his connections with the cartel, and his operation, that it makes sense for him to have this lab and network. It doesn't feel contrived, it feels realistic.

I mean, Night Vale itself sort of follows this idea, at least for the first few seasons. It's a town where every conspiracy theory is true. Why is every conspiracy theory true? Who knows! Here's the weather. Of course, by now the show has been going on for so long that the how and why have been fleshed out a little more, but it's ultimately not important to the story how Night Vale works. Until Doctor Janet Lubelle, who wants to know why everything is the way it is.

That's how she was presented, at least. But again with premise versus plot: the story says that Janet wants to understand why everything is the way it is, the reality shows that she wants to just explain everything away. As such, her motivations are really unclear. And like I've already said, you can have a premise that raises questions without needing to answer them all. The problem is that this season introduces so many questions to the point that they sometimes conflict with each other and ultimately the story of the season just doesn't make sense. This is all wrapped up in "Carlos, Explained", to a degree that doesn't actually make sense.

Q: Why did Kareem Nazari call the University of What It Is?

A: Doesn't matter.

Q: How did Janet get hundreds of scientists to come to Night Vale with her anyway, if Carlos was the only science professor seven years ago?

A: Doesn't matter.

Q: Does Janet want to understand how everything in Night Vale works?

A: No, she's just going to explain things away.

Q: Then does she not care how things work?

A: No, she just wants to prove a point.

Q: What is the point she's trying to prove?

A: That her version of science is better than Carlos's.

Q: And why is she trying to prove that?

A: Because Carlos took away all of her funding years ago.

Q: Then why didn't she come to town years ago if she knew Carlos was here all along?

A: Doesn't matter.

Q: Then why did she wait an entire year to explain Carlos away?

A: Because she wanted to destroy Night Vale first.

Q: But why did she want to destroy Night Vale?

A: To fuck with Carlos.

Q: Then why did she seemingly not care about Carlos at all for the entire year she was there or the entire seven years before that?

A: Doesn't matter.

Q: Then why did her team entirely abandon her if she'd brought them out here for the express purpose of fucking with Carlos?

A: That's not why she brought them out here.

Q: Then why did she?

A: Doesn't matter.

And the problem is that you can continue these circular questions forever. No, we don't need to know exactly how Janet recruited all her scientists or how she became Interim Dean, but her motivations and the story as a whole don't have enough internal logic. The only way to successfully conclude this arc would have been to give it way more time, and that just didn't happen.

But at the end of the day, what was the story of Janet Lubelle actually about? We've talked a lot about concept versus execution. Repo! the Genetic Opera is about taking people's organs for an insurance market, sure, but at the heart, it's about family. Breaking Bad is a story about a meth kingpin, but at the heart it's a story about change. Spirited Away is about growing up. American Gods is about religion and memory. Night Vale is a Jewish folktale and a love story.

What is the story of Janet Lubelle? Is it a revenge story? If it is, it doesn't set up the motivations for revenge, because I'm sorry but one episode where Janet says Carlos stole her funding is not enough of a motivation. Is it a story about how power corrupts? Then you have to give us some inclination of where her power stems from. Is it, as some people have suggested, a story about how a rigid system of conformity tries to erase queerness? Yes, this sounds right at first, but the text doesn't hold that idea up enough when we barely know anything about the University as a whole or Janet as an individual. Is the story just that some people are bad? To be honest, that's not a very interesting story.

I like all of these concepts individually, but they don't come together enough to create a satisfying narrative. Janet Lubelle as a character has a lot of potential, especially since she's the first person to permanently kill off some Night Vale regulars like Sarah Sultan and the Glow Cloud. I think her relationship to the town as an enemy is interesting.

What I would like to see, if she comes back, is exploring her relationship to the town as someone who can't leave. Carlos was a scientist who came to Night Vale with wide eyes and fascination, who fell in love with it easily and decided to stay in spite of his skepticism. It's also strongly implied throughout the show that if the town wants you, it's not going to let you go. I'd love to see Janet coming to terms with the fact that she's stuck in a town she tried to destroy. How could Night Vale challenge her worldview? How could it deradicalize her from her idea that anything unfamiliar needs to be destroyed? Could she accept that Carlos has won again, or would she be a permanent minor antagonist like Kevin, someone to come up and be foiled ever so often?

There's a lot left to explore with Dr. Janet Lubelle. It probably won't be, but I'll happily talk about her anytime someone wants me to.

First of all I want to say I’m sorry for for the way Terrence treated you. I hope writing this blog has been therapeutic for you and your healing. Please only answer if you feel comfortable, but I wanted to ask how you felt about the recent YouTube video that discussed your abuse. I used to be a repo fan a few years back, and watched that video when it came on my suggests. It was my introduction to the youtuber, and to your blog and well. Watching the video felt a bit upsetting, but also helped me make sense of my experience in the fandom and the weird culture of these niche gothy fanspaces where a lot of ickyness and misogyny goes unnoticed. I imagine the extra attention you got from the video might have been stressful. I wanted to hear what you thought about it and whether hearing someone else talking about it felt therapeutic to you. Hearing Laura talk about your involvement in so many of these art projects made me feel for you, because I realized how invested you must have been in these movies as well. Wherever you are, I hope you are able to still be involved in art and/or projects that you love.

Thank you! Between being able to share what happened to me and actual therapy, I'm better than I've ever been. Progress is a not-fun roller coaster, but I have so many more days where I can look back on my life with him and laugh about the ridiculousness rather than cry about the damage done.

I have really mixed feelings about the video. Laura's critique of the movie and terrance's work was hilariously on point and the whole video is just super enjoyable to watch, as both an ex-Repo! fan and someone who enjoys snarky media critique.

While I understand her reasoning as to why she never reached out to me, I don't agree with it. I'm honestly still a little mad about it and I don't know that I ever won't be. It would have been nice to have been asked for permission, which I would have happily given. It would even have been nice to have a head's up, whether or not she wanted my permission. There's just something uncomfortable - to me, the subject - about someone else telling my story - which is in good part about being left out of my own story - and leaving me out of it.

Obviously she couldn't have known this, but also, the video dropped at a time when things were not so hot for me. I didn't really have the energy to spare for that unexpected burst of attention, but I still felt like I had to run to catch up to all of it since I hadn't been given the opportunity to get in front of it and prepare. It's been a long time since I had active bullies, but the comments on the video absolutely awoke that same feeling again - except, tbh, kind of worse because I knew I couldn't jump in and defend myself or cut anyone to the quick with my sharp wit without looking like a whole idiot. Reading them became something of a self-harm routine for weeks after, where I'd be refreshing the video multiple times a day to see if there were any new hateful, ignorant takes about me - which I really didn't need at a time in my life when I already had other things making me feel isolated, not listened to, and hated. And, look, I know that knowing she was going to make this video wouldn't have saved me from any of that, but...I don't know, I would have liked to have been able to do some prep work with my therapist beforehand rather than being forced to frantically try to patch the cracks after.

At the end of the day, I do think it's good that the video exists. I'm glad it's put more attention than I've ever been able to on the fact that he's a self-important, predatory bag of trash. I want people to stay safe from his bullshit and I want people to hear a funny, inciteful take-down of his overinflated ego. If there's more than one place on the internet for people do that, that's a good thing!

Hey! I have two questions for you. Firstly, if you could learn anything about Jude, what would you want to learn? Secondly, how and when did you become a fan of him? Love this page!!

In the early summer of 2010, my mum and I rented a Sherlock Holmes DVD from the store because we had heard it’s a good film and needed something to watch that evening. I already knew Jude’s name and that he’s actor but because I never cared about celebrities (and still don’t care lmao) I didn’t know what he looked like. I had seen A.I. in 2002 but I was like 7 at that time so I was way more focused on the talking teddy bear than the robot prostitute.

I was sitting on the floor in our living room (I suppose because I was cuddling our dog), looked up to the TV, saw this

and thought “Holy shit, so that’s Jude Law, huh?”. I really loved the film and especially Watson so much that I decide to start reading the books, however, because I was too deep into my anime phase at that point, I didn’t start reading them until early 2011. Because so much time had past in-between watching the film and reading the books, my brain created its own vision of what the characters look like - except for Watson. He stuck out to me so much that I was unable (or unwilling lmao) to make up my own version. Reading the books (or the book, I believe I had only read The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes at that point) I started to love Watson even more and because I automatically associated him with Jude, I grew attached to him as well (on an artificial level as I only knew his name and what he looked like as Watson). March came and I decided to go to Jude’s Wikipedia page one evening because I was bored. I randomly picked one of his films, Repo Men, watched it online (legallyofcoursecough) and instantly realized I really like him as an actor and as his own person, not just as Watson.

So from that point on I started to slowly make my way through his filmography, watched and read interviews with him, saw Contagion in theaters in October and followed the entire AGOS promo. In November of 2011, my friends and I visited Madame Tussauds in Berlin and in their merch section they had a coaster with Jude’s face on it, so naturally I bought it. It was the first Jude related thing I ever owned and it’s still sitting on my shelf.

I used to say I was only a casual fan of Jude until I met him in 2013 but I came to realize that isn’t actually true. December 2012 I had already followed him enough and liked him enough that I begged my mum to buy me a ticket for Henry V. She agreed but you could only pay with a credit card on the website and we didn’t have one, so I had to text my friend in freaking Belgium, asked if I could use her credit card and then had to go to the bank the other day to send her the money. The ticket was then send from England to her house in Belgium because you had to use the same billing and shipping address and she then had to send the ticket to my house in Germany.

I was so anxious the entire time and feared that the ticket would get lost in the mail so I was basically stressed 24/7 until it finally arrived. And I knew the time would be a nightmare for me and I knew it was a huge commitment to ask my mum for a ticket that literally cost over 100€ for an event that would happen a year later because I technically couldn’t even be sure if I would still be interested in Jude then. Yet I was still willing to go through that so I believe I was already a bit more than a casual fan at that point lmao.

But that’s pretty much the entire story, I guess. It certainly was a gradual process, though. I didn’t love nearly him as much as I do now when I finished watching Repo Men. There where a lot of small moments that lead to this (such as getting to see him perform in Henry V, seeing how happy he was when the play was over and everyone applauded or when he talked about a certain problem he had in an interview that was similar to something I was going to at that time and he offered a solution I literally wouldn’t have thought of myself).

He has been (and still is) a constant source of happiness for me and had been the only reason for me to stay alive for a very, very long time. My bio may  sound like a hyperbole or overly dramatic but it’s the truth. I absolutely wouldn’t be here anymore if I hadn’t constantly had a new film of his to look forward to and if he hadn’t openly talked about therapy in 2016 which encouraged me to seek professional help as well. When I hit my lowest point on September 3rd, 2018 and actually tried to commit suidice, literally the only thing I was sad about losing was the ability to make it to November to see Fantastic Beasts. But now after 3 1/2 years of therapy I’m finally better, much better than I had felt in over a decade. I didn’t even think of suidice for like 4 months which is a really huge achievement for me. I don’t need him to survive anymore but I’ll forever be grateful for what he unknowingly did for me.

I had mused on how to answer your first question for the past like 12 hours and still don’t think I have a satifying answer. I feel like I’m not entitled to information I don’t already have and therefore don’t necessarily have the desire to get it (except for the names of his cats, he should really drop those).

But I guess I’d like to know if he‘s aware of the huge impact he has on other people. He knows what fiction can do for you from his own experience so I feel like he certainly understand the general concept but I wonder if anyone has ever told about his impact. I've talked to a lot of people who have a similar story to mine and know from the media about other people he helped in some way or another (such as a refugee couple who named their child after him because they are so thankful for his help), so, yeah. Maybe I don’t even want to necessarily know if he knows about it but want to make sure he does know about it.

He has often been reduced to his looks and though it certainly has gotten better over the years, it still happens from time to time. And that rightfully bothers him. So I think it would be great if he knew (or already does know) that he’s so, so much more than that to a lot of people.

The Matriarch’s Birth and Inspirations

Fair warning, this post will include late-chapter spoilers as to who The Matriarch is and will eventually become. However this post will have a lot of insight as to my writing style and might be fun to get in my head for a time. After all, I hope the journey itself will be well worth the read. In my youth, I had created a certain character in my head. I considered him a bit of a dream-guard, a powerful man that would guard me against nightmares. A sort of anti-monster that held all the tools to combat whatever dreams that might invade my mind after foolishly watching a horror movie. He evolved over time in his own right, as I took inspiration and ideas from various pieces of media. One of the biggest sources was Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness from various Elder Scrolls games, though he’d later draw some inspiration from Thanos. Over time, I would effectively create an entire world around him. I even made a wiki. Some of that will come into play in The Matriarch’s story but some of it will be tweaked and retconned. It’s an old wiki that has no mention of The Matriarch herself, being a newer creation in comparison. Also borrows too many elements from other games. Kyna Vance for example is essentially Nocturnal, again from The Elder Scrolls. Allein Dakur was my Draenei on WoW and sometimes Tiefling in different universes. These characters will continue to exist in their own right, in smaller roles but much of what made them exist in the first place will be changed as their core births are far too entwined in other people’s universes. Also it’d be stealing if I were to ever publish some of this. I originally wanted to create an entire series on Kyna herself, being one of my first “main” characters bourne from my inner femininity. She was everything I wanted to be but didn’t know at the time that she was essentially my inner trans before I know that being trans was even an option. I had a post regarding that but it appears it has since suffered from the recent “Adult content” purge, despite having no imagery. Either I can’t find it, or some algorithm thinks a trans person coming out in a blog post hidden behind a Read More break counts as adult content and thus must be purged FOR THE CHILDREN. Either way, it became clear to me over time that Kyna became a tad overpowered, even to my liking. She continues to be a relevant force in my lore but will be semi-retired as a background mentor type character to more women. I remember writing a short and incomplete story about a young woman in a universe not too unlike Repo! The Genetic Opera (where my main internet moniker comes from). Instead of prosthetic limbs and artificial organs, the world was run by implants based on a spine attachment because for whatever reason, the world’s emotions had drained. People needed these emotions and thus came together to invent colorful implants, and many people wore their spine attachments with pride as a sort of cultural pissing contest. “I have more emotions than you!”  It was one of the first stories that I made a character gay. My brother, in his pre-woke-ness (and indeed, this story was written long before I knew anything about LGBT subject matter) asked “Why does she have to be a lesbian?” I don’t recall my fullest answer but I do remember me trying to talk about trying to balance the books, as it were. There’s so many stories about straight white men and I just became bored with it all. Ultimately my answer was more like “Why not?”, to which my brother had no real answer. To that end, I don’t even really remember when I made the Matriarch. I believe  she was my real legitimate attempt to make someone her own person, however even she was not immune to direct inspiration. I vaguely based part of her origins on Thresh from League of Legends, and you’ll soon read about a suspiciously similar creature with a powerful Lantern that eventually spawns the Matriarch in her fullest form. However, I did not play LoL all that much and it was certainly not a platform for creative writing or roleplaying. It was likely she was created for a game but she was not born in Oblivion or Skyrim. She was unique in the sense that she was her own creation, while I cannot say that for many of my “original” characters. The Dream-Guard man I mentioned earlier was the true first but drew far too much inspiration from the likes of Sheogorath to the point where he essentially became “Sheogorath - But with more War!” Each and every single character on that wiki I linked above has a direct videogame equivalent, perhaps with the exception of Brian McGee, who was based off a guy I barely knew in school. Otherwise, point to a name on that wiki and I can tell you exactly what game or movie I ripped them out of. To that end, The Matriarch is fairly important to me.  It’s kind of funny, really. Most of my life I’ve always heard certain parts of advice. Jack Patillo of Rooster Teeth and Achievement Hunter fame told guests at one of their conventions to “always make stuff”. Famous authors (Stephen King, maybe?) have always given the advice of “never stop writing”. I’ve known all of this but it wasn’t until a meme, something about not worrying about what’s in the “middle part” and just start, and you’ll figure out the middle part as time goes on. I finally created this blog to at least... begin.

Car accident with no insurance?

I was stopped at a red light behind two cars. Both cars started to go and so did I the next thing I knew I had hit the car in front of me. The car in front of me hit the car in front of him. We all pulled over my car isnt to bad but I drive a suburban, the car in front of me was a smaller car so his looked a little worse. Nobody was hurt, and all cars were drivable, so we decided to not call the police we just all exchanged information. After we had finished and they left I immediately called my insurance lady to let her know what happened. I am not super clear on this next part, we have been going back and forth with our insurance since that call and will continue to fight it. When I called the insurance lady she said I wasnt covered. She said that they had received the last payment much later than it was due (not sure how because it was mailed the same time as always) but because of that our insurance had been cancelled. A couple of weeks ago they had chased our check, she said we were reinstated as of yesterday (the day of the accident) but because it was the same day they werent liable to pay the damages. We are going to keep fighting them because I dont think its fair. So I call the police to come and take a report but of course there wasn't enough officers on duty to send one out so I wake up my brother to get a ride to the station. Keep in mind this is between 2:30-5:00am and the last time I actually saw my car was Sept 13, 2011 at approx 11pm. I arrive at the police station where I make a report, they take down all the info and send me home with the report. Approx 1 hour later they call me and say my vehicle was recovered in a nearby city and they gave me the number to that police station. So I hurry to call them but of course they were closed until 8am. At 8am I call them they said bring my ID and insurance info to recover the vehicle. I go down there and ask questions but they told me they weren't allowed to disclose any information about who, what, were, or when the incident occurred because of confidentiality. They told me I would have to pay the towing and storage fee to recover my car from the impound. So I left and went to the impound paid $218.00 to discover that my vehicle had been totaled. So I had it towed to my house where I called the insurance company to report this. After I reported this incident they took a recorded statement and gave me a claim number. I waited for 2days for my adjuster to call me back and he never did. about 2 weeks later my adjuster calls and leaves me a message saying he needed another recorded statement and to call him back. I call back and got his voice mail. I spoke to one of his colleagues and they said they would send him and his manager a memo to call me back..well that never happened. 1 week after that I get a packet in the mail asking for my cell phone records, keys to the vehicle, and a notarized affidavit. I sent these things back and then a detective from the insurance company calls me and said there were red flags and he needed to get a video recorded statement. I agreed and went to give the statement. A few days later a detective from the police department where my car was recovered from calls me and tells me that my youngest son's father was with some friends at a nightclub were a drive-by shooting occurred and my son's father wasn't shot but the young man he was with was and as a result of them trying to escape the scene my car was crashed. As they arrived to the scene and asked questions about what happened my son's father would not admit he was driving the vehicle, and because they didn't actually see him driving or pull him over they could not prosecute. The detective asked me did I know anything about this incident and I replied hell no! The night of the incident my son's father had came to my house around 3am but never mentioned anything of course because he knows I would have tried to kill him. He also knows I would have been pissed because I never let him drive my car for the 3 years that I have known him, he has never had a license. She ask me was it ok to list him as a suspect and I told her Yes! I let her know that he did not have permission to drive my car under any circumstances. The very next day the detective from the insurance company called me and ask me what was my son's father name and what where the numbers that where called on my cell phone records. He asked why did he call me at 2:54am, I explained he wanted to let me know he was on his way over which wasn't out of the ordinary for him to do. So then the detective tells me my story stinks and I need to withdraw my claim because on my interview I didn't disclose that my boyfriend had come to my house. I told him why did I need to disclose who was sleeping in my bed if it had nothing to do with my car. I mean we know now he had something to do with it but I didn't know then. He told me the police detective also had the keys to my car which was a lie. It clearly states on the impound record that they had no keys. Not to mention the car has broken locks and loose wires I guess he didn't read that part of the report. He also told me I was trying to cover for my son's dad to get the car covered. I told him he could arrest him for GTA for all I care. My car was stolen and no matter who stole it I'm the victim and of course I want my car covered. He then said he was denying the claim and sending the case to the Department of Insurance to see if fraud was committed. Im beyond frustrated because I have nothing to do with what my son's dad did.
