Inspired by this post from @derangedfujoshi

Talk about character development, being the protagonist of Kuro, Seb went through quite a development.

We started off with an uncaring asshole demon who thinks he's above puny little humans, including his own master (to be fair, Ciel is tiny, but that's not the point here).

And even in the Circus arc, he was still mocking Ciel.

Basically, he was saying that he would protect Ciel from life or death situations, but other than that, Ciel is on his own, most especially if the injury was caused by Ciel's own mistake. He has no qualm about putting Ciel in harm's way, and he even enjoyed it.

But then, the asthma attack happened and I think this is the first turning point for Seb - even if he didn't realize it back then.

So, why is that? Because for once, he couldn't save Ciel. Ciel got an ashtma attack and there was absolutely nothing that Sebastian could do. He could only wait it out. And this is also when Agni told him about putting Ciel's well-being above his orders. At that moment, he might've brushed it off & Soma's presence might've made the whole thing seem more lighthearted, but that comment stayed with him anyway.

That's why he started carrying that physician book that we see later on in the Green Witch arc. He didn't need to carry it with him everywhere, but he did anyway.

Next, of course we have the Campania arc, where Seb almost lost Ciel to UT. It was at this moment that he realized that there was a real possibility of him losing Ciel, that there was someone out there who can best him and take the boy from him. He started to worry, to pay closer attention and ee got this small detail...

Well, he looked just as concerned as the other two. The widening of his eyes, the slight panicked look, Ciel had fooled him and gave him a little PTSD moment just as he'd fooled Agni & Soma. And even back in Campania, he made a light comment about Ciel's asthma, but Ciel brushed it off because of Lizzy.

In the next arc, Ciel got hurt playing cricket and we got this...

The only reason he didn't go into panic was because that part was already planned. Was he happy about it? No. That's why he scolded Ciel while holding him securely. Like, what kind of professor would carry their fallen cricket student off the field like so? Or for those who know, a butler to make that kind of face at his master? I'd love to see Lizzy's reaction, but I digress...

Next, they encountered UT again and Sebastian, fuelled entirely by his fear, panic, and imagination, went against Ciel's order and prioritized Ciel's life and that resulted in this famous scene...

And then, Green Witch happened and oh, boy... This arc is the greatest turning point for Sebastian.

Once again, Seb was put in a situation where he couldn't save Ciel on his ownz where he was forced to stand aside and watch as others took care of his little master.

Just look at his face... His shock and dismay that Ciel had rejected him and had clung to Finny instead. He did not like it. Not at all.

Another look at rejected Sebas... He just stood there by the door, tormenting himself. He knew Ciel would reject him, but he just wanted to know how his little master was doing.

And then this...

This, imo, is a very important moment. Sebastian, who sees himself as above humans, has lowered himself in front of Sieglinde, and begged her to save his master. He even offered to do whatever Sieglide wanter him to do in exchange for that. Basically, he's offering his service without a cost or a contract.

The other servants talked about this later on, but Tanaka corrected them. Sebastian did not 'play around' with Sieglinde, it took a lot for a demon like him to do this. And nobody told him to do this. He took the initiative, acted on his own accord when his master was otherwise unavailable.

This, here, is one of the biggest proofs of his character development. The old Sebas would never, ever do this.

"But he tried to eat Ciel later on!" Did he, really? I had another post that talked about that.

Moving on...

The next time Ciel was injured, we got this...

What's so amusing about this scene is that he didn't have to jump out of a moving carriage. He could've just told the coachman to change ditection, but no, again, in his panic, he has acted impulsively.

Of course, I'm looking at this from a shipper's POV, but even if you don't ship them, you must admit that the demon has gone through quite the character development throughout the manga. He went from a mere hungry demon who sees himself above his master to 'Sebastian'.

When I was first binge reading the manga and got to the beginning of the blue revenge arc I was like oh my god Ciel’s real name is 100% Fenian, because they were hiding it and why else would they hide his real name so long unless it was going to have some sort of bigger twist/meaning tied to it. And honestly I was kind of surprised that wasn’t a more common theory.

Like Ciel named Sebastian after his dog, so I feel like it would be in line with his naming convention to give this boy that was in a similar situation as himself his old name. It would be kind of a symbolic shedding of his old identity to pass it on like that. And Ciel clearly has a soft spot for Finny that has yet to be fully explored and I think it would just make so much narrative sense.

And I thought all of this before I remembered Ciel used the name in the circus arc or learned that the fenian cycle book keeps coming up in the orphanage arc (I never actually got that far though). So like that’s the one theory for Black Butler that I’ll die on the hill of (until the manga disproves me I guess).

NGL, I just really really love this panel of Finny. It really shows he's still willing to fight for what's right, using his big boy strength. Excellent use of character.

This scene actually hurt. Hurt a little worse than Snake's death. Finny is now able to grieve for not just his co-worker, but also a friend. They went in smiling and ready to work, only for one of them to come out a mess.

This makes me wonder now if Doll will take Snake's body to Undertaker to be used and be present in the final fight. I really hope not!!

Sure they don't have evidence in hand, but the kids themselves are enough evidence to prove that they were being raised for parts and blood to fix already existing dolls. They've got Finny to back them up.

Time for the next part of the arc. Either presentation of all the information to the Queen, or another infiltration mission. I don't think it's time for them to confront R!Ciel and Undertaker yet. They gotta collect their own cards.

Either way, I'm excited to return to the OG duo for the series. I've enjoyed the character developments and building for the servants, but its a sight for sore eyes for these two.

Oh and, can't forget my favorite thing in the series. The staple: The contract.

Finny and Snake are so good!<3 There isn’t a lot of them in Book of Circus (and they haven’t met yet…), but every time we see them we are happy hehe.

When it comes to tops and bottoms, hmmm… not really? To be completely honest, we aren’t super invested in other characters from this arc in terms of shipping, but! I would say Dagger is a top because of that one scene where Snake, I mean EMILY flirted with him. It was a tiny little spark, but I wouldn’t mind seeing them together. I really like the idea of Emily flirting only with guys that Snake himself likes, and Dagger has some similarities to Finny too, so… makes sense in my head >:3

You’ve sent this ask a couple of days ago, and I’ve written a post about the event since then, so I am sorry if I repeat myself, but…

We don’t know a lot about their backstory, but I think it’s very fair to say that they have trauma bond. Their connection and care for each other is genuine, and I think Fellow really wants what’s best for both Gidel and himself. Some of NRC boys commented on how their relationship feel very family-like, and you know how it is with us and family-like connections lol I say it every time I talk about the Shrouds, and these have this theme too: it’s you and I against the entire world. It’s beautiful :”)

Maybe it was Lilia who got him ready, he is the most experienced one, after all. He took one look at the rest of the boys and just figured that the wider the better, cause yeah, some of them might want to share…

But in actuality, what I had in mind is that this is just Fellow’s “natural state” due to his possible other jobs and stuff. The NRC boys barely undressed him, bullied him a little bit and lifted his legs – and he is already at this state. I guess this version is even more cursed.

Oh, for Gidel to suggest such a thing! >:( How very naughty of him.

Kuro First-Person Pronouns: Doll

Unlike English, Japanese has many first-person pronouns ( “I”). These often will give you information about the type of person the character is. Are they very feminine or masculine? Polite or brusque? Young or old? Are they higher or lower in the social hierarchy? How close, psychologically, are they to the listener?

It’s not uncommon for one person to use different pronouns in different situations, and that is sometimes the case in the manga, depending on the character.

These ofc get lost in translation and are something I find very interesting. So this series will go through some of the Black Butler characters and show you which pronoun(s) they tend to use in Japanese and what that says about them as a character.

Doll - オレ

Used By: Men | Casual or Polite: Casual

Doll consistently uses オレ.

Doll’s gender is a bit confusing , especially once you move from the Japanese into a language like English that demands pronouns for a sentence to make sense.

Although Doll is afab (as admitted to Ciel in the Circus Arc), Doll uses the first-person pronoun オレ (aka 俺), ore, which is the same one Bard does.

Here, Doll admits to Ciel that they’re a 「乙女」, or young girl (translated as “maid” in the official English), but even after continues using the same “masculine” pronoun (see below for example).

Doll also uses オレ in the present, and the official English used “he” as a pronoun for Doll. (The Japanese doesn’t need a third-person pronoun, so aside from オレ, there’s no official gender marker for Doll.)

Now, as I discussed in Bard’s post, some women do use this pronoun, but it not clear why Doll does. Is it because Doll grew up surrounded by men and boys? Is it because Doll has “taken on” a male persona to fit in? Or does Doll identify as masculine?

I can’t answer those questions based solely on the source text. All I can say is that Doll tells Ciel that they’re a “maiden” and consistently uses オレ.

So is Doll an 「オレつ娘」, orekko, a woman who uses the ore pronoun? Unless Yana gives us more info about Doll, it’s impossible for me to say.

However, some more history about this pronoun. It originated from a second-person pronoun (“you”), おのれ (oh no re) before the Kamakura period (~1185-1332), and in the Edo period (~1600-1867) eventually became a first-person pronoun that was used by both men and women of various stations.

During the Meiji period (~1868-1912), woman stopped using it in standard dialect, but it retained a strong presence in regional rural dialects. It could be that Yana has Doll use オレ as a way to distinguish them as having a coarser, more “country” way of speaking, rather than directly indicating anything about Doll’s gender.

オレ is also associated with tough and aggressive women, especially in fiction, which could be another reason Yana elected to have Doll use it. In fact, girls who use this pronoun have an association in manga/anime of being tomboys, often can beat boys in a fight, and may dress in masculine clothing. That definitely seems to fit Doll while not in their circus getup.

Once again, it’s likely Yana took all these things into account while deciding which pronoun to use for Doll.

if you follow me you already know i went crazy over the parallels from this scene and the early cielizzy scene, i love this scene so much

also these little scenes where finny is hurt and bleeding but he still is sitting on the bed clutching ciel close to him who seeks comfort from him without hesitation😭

no one being able to calm ciel down and finny freaking out about it even while he's being bandaged

finny devotedly watching over ciel while he sleeps

the way he talks to ciel here is so gentle and cute to me i love him

as i've said before, finny does not give a fuck who you are, he would do anything for ciel and protect him from anyone 💅

him using the extent of his power to try and desperately stop sebastian because he wants to protect ciel...hes such a good boy

I'll have you know that (I hate the Black Butler anime so ffucking much-) I like Black Butler for more than just the ffucked up relationship between Sebastian and Ciel and how easily it can become more ffucked up. I love the story way too much, some of the arcs are not the best in my opinion but this damn narrative is one of the best I have ever witnessed. I love a lot of the other characters (Mey-Rin my beloved badass clumsy best girl ever, Ran-Mao dead-pan cutie hot girl of all time, Finny the sweetest most protective boy ever, Baldroy my favorite failure of a man who tries his best and AMERICA FFUCK YEAH, Snake. Snake. What's not to like about Snake, Lau the silliest "mysterious" guy ever, Soma who I would kill many many people for, Sieglinde my darling little science girl who I would die and kill for.)

It's just that. From what I've seen. Most people who post a lot about those guys. Are anti-shippers and therefore, hell no. And most of the people who are pro-shippers in the fandom only seem to focus on Seb and Ciel.

I am. Very passionate about Black Butler and I oh so very want one of my IRL friends to read the manga. But he has tumblr so I very much think I should refrain from. Shippy content. Since he ain't the type of guy who likes ship content. And I. Mayhaps I should stray from posting things that are spoilers. Hm. SIGH.

you accidentally ran into him backstage trying to find sebastian

and by ran into him

i mean literally

you’re both on the ground and boy do you feel guilty

talking through his snakes was something you found quite intriguing

but you didn’t see him again after that

until ciel’s little murder party

and then you saw snake a lot more often

as cliche as it is

you guys started dating after the whole campania fiasco

ciel is still unsure how to feel about it

but since you’re wealthy, you get snake some pretty niche gifts for anniversaries and birthdays etc

snake has started talking to you more without the help of his snakes, but you’ve told him many times that it doesn’t really matter, he can take his time

in return, a bunch of crafty things kind of appear around your quarters at the phantomhive manor

and you get one of his snakes to forever hang out with you

mey-rin is probably just shy with affection at first

but once she's comfortable, she'll probably be a bit more seductive and bold

especially when others are looking at you-

when you went to germany and the whole mustard gas situation she was extra protective of you

any time she went anywhere, she'd given you a kiss and a hug just in case something happened in the time you were apart

she also didn't trust any of the women in the village around you

had finny watch out for you while also caring for ciel

she would shoot someone in the head in a heartbeat if they tried to harm you and she has

if you're a noble who's like lizzie, where you've been taught some form of self defence, she'd be less likely to go berserk

but having mey-rin as a girlfriend really calms your nerves in situations like that

after everything is over, she'll check you over, run you a bath and give you the cuddles and kisses you deserve

you'll do the same, giving any scars a kiss and gently patching up any wounds (if she got any)

she hugs you from behind in private as well, resting her head on your shoulder

you don't exactly like splurging on her because of her past, so it's almost like a normal relationship

-I assume Lizzie isn’t coming back because she knows she was with the wrong Ciel?

-NICE ART, Sebastian’s demon form looks horrific!

-That’s actually good motivation for Ciel to become Ciel, ngl.

-Ciel: *is literally an impostor*. Me: I actually like him even more now. It’s the depth of character, y’all!

-TwinCiel was literally sacrificed body and soul, why is he here

-I have to say, the art of the contract story is no joke, man, it’s topnotch.

-Ciel’s purported intelligence and strategy actually in action, I’m liking it.

-Oh Ciel, baby, what other contractee, you’re a full-time job.

-TwinCiel gives me creepy vibes, I’m kinda scared of him.

-The hell is Undertaker doing now?!?!

-My biggest thing rn is how the estate fam will react. I’m really looking forward to that, ‘cause I really really want them to be on Ciel’s side.

-I’m not vibing with the revelation of a twin brother in itself, but I’m very much okay with the repercussions and the events surrounding it.

-Honestly, the best art, the best consequences, the best character development, the best so many things - all stemming from a premise that I don’t vibe with. Fascinating.

-Although ngl, I’d like to see a bit more of TwinCiel’s POV? Like, yes, he enjoys the rivalry, but why? What changed? Why does that once caring brother orchestrate Ciel’s arrest? Tell me more.

-Yes, TwinCiel, turns out it took quite a while to cure death, you see, grumble grumble.

-Aunt Francis doesn’t look convinced.

-Ooh! Oooohhh who’s Polaris then?

-Man, these backstories are INTENSE. I legit have to take breaks.

Black Butler where o!ciel is the only one getting kidnapped because Rachel, Vincent, and r!ciel was out

My idea is that r!ciel wants to suprised o!ciel with toys so he beg his dad to take him to the toy store, Rachel follow along to pick up Angelina since she just got out of the hospital after her accident/miscarriage but then they come home to a blazing fire and all of them are devastated.

A month later o!ciel come back with Sebastian despite being happy the family mourns over o!ciel who now just emotionless.

I wanna write a scene where the whole month the family stays with o!ciel even Vincent ignore all his guard dog duty for him playing and taking him on a trip to London, buy alot more toys and new clothes, but sadly none of them even gain a twitch of smile from o!ciel except a "thank you, father" and it hurts Vincent so much. Rachel can't help to cry every night and r!ciel feels like a failure (I have alot of ideas and alot of them is just overprotective family)

Heres some of my ideas for this au:

On the twins 13th birthday they ride horses with Elizabeth and aunt Francis but because o!ciel never ride a horse before (even after he came home) r!ciel make this their bonding moment and teaches o!ciel to ride it only for o!ciel almost falling (and got caught by Sebastian) that he stopped and let o!ciel ride with him, when the bear attacks it appears behind o!ciel rather than Elizabeth and r!ciel tackled him down.

(Campania arc) o!ciel knows what undertaker is doing and decided to snoop around but got caught by Elizabeth and r!ciel (and he's mad) but before they could go up the boat the zombies (?) Finny, meyrin, and bard is still here but I decided to put doll and joker as their servants too because rather than in the original where ciel kills everyone in that arc except snake Vincent is more level headed and take them in (including snake too I guess) (the other circus members still got killed but doll and joker mourns and accept it because they were the one planning to kill)

ASP Alt. Ending/Headcanons pt.1

See? I take the least bit of validation and I let it go to my head... oh well. Enjoy my thoughts about four idiot boys and the men they become.

Basically, this is a "what if Gene and Brinker really had enlisted when they were going to?" scenario. Gene leaves without saying goodbye, breaks Finny's heart. Years later, Brigadier General Forrester is a war hero and Mr. Phineas Halloran is a gym teacher at Devon. One day ~1961 some of their students discover a notebook in the back of a drawer. It is almost entirely snail drawings, but includes one sketch of two boys kissing in the shadow of a tree. A bit of detective work reveals the identities of the lovers, and they decide to invite Gene back to Devon without telling Finny. Chaos ensues.

headcanons for the fellas as adults under the cut:

Leper Lepellier, aka Mr. Leper, teaches natural history at Devon.

I find it very funny how we are given next to no physical descriptions for Leper in the book, so eveybody's Leper design is different.

That said, my Leper is a gentle giant (6'3") with dark hair, glasses, and freckles. He has an inexplicable fondness for terrible sweater vests and wacky ties. Also, he's aroace :D

He gives the best hugs and tends to be a pretty chill teacher, but at one point just hauls off and punches a bigoted school board inspector.

In this version he either just misses the draft/is immediately disqualified, or dodges. He is adamant about opposing the war in Vietnam, which earns him some enemies among the parents and school boards.

He still keeps snails, in particular one John Knowles, a giant African land snail (I know they're illegal now but it's 1961) who is the reason all his shirts have little holes in the shoulders and sleeves. They have frequent one-sided conversations.

Then there's Finny Halloran, gym teacher extraordinaire.

His leg has healed well enough to walk with the help of a cane, but he can't really run so well. He got the job out of pity but has since proved to be one of the best gym teachers in school history.

Why? Because he's so darn good at picking up on who's confident and who needs a bit more help, and adapting the games to pull those less eager students into the action. I wrote a whole paragraph on the blitzball passage for English, okay? I know what I'm talking about.

The kids love him, of course.

Like Leper, he opposes the war in Vietnam. Twenty years of seeing his classmates come back broken or not come back at all has stripped all the glory out of war for him. His top priority is protecting his own (the students, Leper, and eventually Gene and Brinker are included in this too).

The cane is made out of that branch. The branch. Which has since been chopped off, and students aren't allowed near the tree.

He doesn't know what Gene did, and is upset with him for leaving so abruptly without a goodbye. He's eager to pick up where they left off, but the course of true love never did run smooth...

Is it incredibly obvious I'm just pulling these out of the seat of my pants? and apparently mixing idioms now? oh dear.

Brinker Hadley is a somehow-functional mess of a man.

He served in a combat position for a brief period of time, then took a desk job as soon as possible. He's been Gene's PA for a while.

Since the book really doesn't give us much to go on besides *that rear*, there's a lot of variety in Brinker designs too. And I love to see it. Mine is pretty similar to the actor from the 2009 movie (blond slicked-back hair), with the addition of omnipresent sunglasses and an oversized coat.

He's aro but not ace, and had some kind of relationship while overseas. There's some unresolved stuff there but it stays in the background for the most part.

As a student, he was known for having a really good voice, but twentyish years of chain-smoking have done a number on his lungs. He also drinks to forget, and denies any possibility of this being a problem.

His arc really centers around healing as a person when he takes on a position as long-term sub for Finny and reconnects with Leper. (qpr, anyone?)

The snails adopt him quickly. He'll pretend to despise them but secretly loves his chaotic shell children.

Finally, Brigadier General Gene Forrester:

Because he joins up earlier, Gene actually does see action overseas in the final days of the war. At some point, he gets caught in an explosion that leaves his left leg full of shrapnel. Everyone thinks he'll either die or go stateside, but he throws himself into military strategy and physical training and rises through the ranks into a command position.

He's going grey at the temples now and has scars up the left side of his body. He kinda sees his injury as some form of absolution for what he did to Finny, but this is all thrown off balance when they crash back into each other's lives.

He finds himself falling for Finny all over again, while agonizing about telling him the truth.

He's not a huge fan of the war either, and his return to Devon leads to him and Finny taking some of the students south to attend an anti-war protest. Once again, chaos ensues.

He and Brinker are each other's best friends and are way closer than they were back at school. Like Leper, he's increasingly worried for his friend's health.

@gkrosental Oh, I’ve blogged about this before, but it’s split between various posts. So, it might be hard to find. You can check my blog, though, for #advanced technology, #medical technology, #technological advances, #medical advances, #reaper technology, etc. Oh... and stuff like #george and #giygas....

For one thing, that’s not Sebastian’s mobile; it’s the one Vanel’s thugs have. He just takes it from one of them to talk to Vanel.

The other thing is that modern technology shows up in the manga quite frequently, and Yana-san explained once that it’s an alternate universe to begin with, and these things are, therefore, only... slightly anachronistic. Let’s not forget that our earl has some kind of television; it’s been vaguely mentioned by our earl and Finny, and much more directly mentioned by Soma. Funny thing about the TV is that our earl must not be the only one to have one, since John Brown mentions the same TV program to the crowd at the Crystal Palace; he promotes the rumor that the show is based on Queen Victoria! But yeah... some of them are definitely still anachronistic, even for the Kuroverse.

The reapers (and their superiors) have advanced technology. We know this for a fact; even ages ago, when Othello was newer to the reaper organization, he’s seen carrying around a box of computer parts, like a keyboard. Othello says that humans can get ahold of such knowledge through demon contracts, etc. Even though Sebastian hasn’t been told (that we know of) to “invent stuff for me” by our earl, we can pretty well assume that Funtom’s innovative toys come from a combination of our earl’s imagination and Sebastian’s demonic abilities. Funtom is best known for its Bitter Rabbits and candies, but they also sell video game consoles... with game controllers connected by wires. Indeed, Funtom sells a few things that you’d only expect the reapers to have. But it doesn’t end with Funtom, not even regarding video games. How else would Chlaus show up in ch1 with that game cartridge packaging for “Mouse3”? It was actually full of the drug evidence he’d brought back from Italy... but the packaging is probably legit.

I suspect that reapers, like Undertaker, also have an effect on the advancements that humans make... accelerating the process of innovation. Those dialysis machines are a perfect example. I’m not sure yet who actually built them. Perhaps Druitt, since he has a medical license? And because Undertaker saved him on the Campania for REASONS...?

At one point, during the murders arc, Charles Grey makes a comment that Germany’s about ten years ahead of where it should be; I’m not sure how he learned that (perhaps from John Brown?!?), but this means that the Kuroverse is dealing with an accelerated timeline for its technological advances. Characters like Grey and Othello acknowledge something is amiss. But, it’s complicated why it’s happening. Germany might have some reaper or demon/angel intervention, too, but they also have/had prodigies, like Sieglinde Sullivan. She managed something her parents, with all their learning and training, had failed to do. SuLin was the result. Idk how they got the rest of the advanced technology they are using, like radar and tanks. Divine intervention? Other geniuses? Since coming to Great Britain, Sieglinde has continued to shock and amaze with her latest inventions... which seem to be financially backed by the queen....

The reason I mentioned #george and #giygas is because of my main theory regarding Black Butler... that’s it’s largely based on a Nintendo game called Mother3. I mean, that’s what “Mouse3” by “Ninkyodo” refers to, after all. But, as I’ve said in many of my posts about this, it’s not just Mother3 being used for the manga series; it’s the entire game series. And this topic is one of those situations that requires going all the way back to the first installment: Mother. In the US, it was titled EarthBound: Beginnings.

In Mother, a young alien, named Giygas (the translation varies, but this is one of the common ones), is traveling from their home planet, populated by this technologically advanced civilization. Their spacecraft crash lands on Earth and they are taken in by a couple, named George and Maria. They raise them as their own, and they later manage to travel with Giygas back towards their home planet, and Maria stays there... but George returns to Earth... with stolen technology, which he continues to research... and spreads around to other humans. Giygas is sent by their superiors to stop George, because the alien race is worried that humans will eventually use their own technology against them. However, George has died by the time Giygas returns to Earth, so they decide to target George’s descendants. Humans have started to incorporate the knowledge that George brought back; it’s even showing up in some humans’ natural abilities, as if it’s being genetically inherited. We meet one of those descendants, Ninten. He, with the help of friends, has to collect melodies from a song and sing it to Queen Mary, who is... kind of like Maria... but on another plane of existence, called Magicant.

Later, Ness (in Mother2, aka EarthBound) and his pals have to fight people who are under Giygas’ power, including a rather bothersome and wholly self-centered boy named Pokey Minch. By now, Giygas has been driven mad by his futile attempts to stop the spread of this stolen technology and knowledge. Then they have to fight Pokey Minch again, but Pokey has been drastically changed by time-traveling equipment he stole from a human inventor (Dr. Andonuts). Ness and his friends have to fight not just this futuristic version of Pokey but also an unhinged and unleashed version of Giygas; the alien has lost their physical form and now exists as an evil force of immense power. Through prayer (mostly), Ness and his friends are able to banish ... perhaps truly destroy... Giygas, but Pokey escapes to cause problems yet another time.

With Mother3, which never got a worldwide release (which is why Chlaus says in Black Butler that “Mouse3” [and the drugs] were hard to get ahold of in Italy), mirror twin brothers Claus and Lucas get separated after their mother is killed (and their father is too full of grief to help them). Claus ends up missing (he’s dead at the bottom of a cliff), and Lucas and the family dog, Boney, go on a quest to avenge his family. Lucas, Boney, and friends they make have to defeat King Porky; King Porky is what the time-traveling Pokey Minch decides to call himself when he travels to this future setting and settles down to become a tyrant. Giygas seems to be gone, but King Porky still follows Giygas’ destructive life path. King Porky is obsessed with popularity and technological advances. And, at some point, the lifeless body of Claus gets turned into a Fascinating Chimera, and the mirror twin brothers have to compete to fulfill a prophecy... of waking the Dark Dragon. Dr. Andonuts was previously forced to help King Porky, but even he eventually gets revenge.

I have a lot of posts about Mother3 theory, and I’m trying to focus here on a particular aspect, so here are some parallels, particularly regarding technology:

Our earl — Lucas

Real Ciel — Claus

Sebastian, under contract — Boney, the loyal family dog

Sebastian, aka the “Black Butler”, once the contract is fulfilled — Dark Dragon, particularly once the prophecy is fulfilled

Undertaker, bringing otherworldly technology to humans — George

Reaper superiors and/or John Brown — the original manifestation of Giygas and that alien race

Reapers, in general — Magypsies, in general

Prince Soma — Pokey Minch

Prince Soma with the Right Hand of Kali — Pokey Minch with the unhinged Giygas (This parallel would be further strengthened if Prince Soma ends up stealing anything out of Sieglinde’s lab or convinces her to make any sort of contraption for him.)

Queen Victoria, who demands unwavering loyalty and is trying to increase Great Britain’s power through technology and new infrastructure — King Porky, who demands the same and is also focused on infrustrucfure, technology, innovation, etc.

Queen Victoria with John Brown — King Porky drunk on unbridled power, basing his actions on what he thinks Giygas would want of him.

Undertaker, inventor of Bizarre Dolls — Dr. Andonuts, inventor of Fascinating Chimera

Sieglinde, chemist and inventor of various contraptions — Dr. Andonuts (also his younger version, Lloyd), inventor of various contraptions

There are so many other parallels, not just in characters and plots, but also in their timelines. However, like I said... I’m trying to focus on your ask regarding technological anachronisms.

TL/DR: It’s definitely supposed to be the Victorian era, but it’s an alternative universe to our own, so it took some different paths along the historical timeline. Add to that the fact that reapers and demons/angels (or other supernatural beings, like gods) have been intervening in human lives, and advanced technologies and innovations have been introduced along the way because of it.

There are lots of examples of this throughout the series, including the mobile phone used by Vanel’s thugs (Sebastian grabbed theirs; he doesn’t have one of his own). Other examples include TVs, video game consoles, war tanks, radar, and all the contraptions Sieglinde makes for herself and for others, like the Phantom Five.

This all works just dandy with my theory that the manga series is largely based on Nintendo’s Mother game series, since both deal quite a bit with “stolen” technology and runaway technology/innovation.
