In Thick as Thieves, Costis draws a parallel between Kamet + himself and Immakuk + Ennikar, but I’ve always wondered how Kamet would have related to the poems when he was young and had dreams of running the Mede empire from behind the scenes.
Kamet's scholarly description of the Immukuk and Ennikar tablets invites an obvious comparison to the real-world epic of Gilgamesh:
“You said you were reciting from the first tablet,” said the Attolian. “There are more than a hundred in the temple of Anet alone,” I said. “No one knows how many there are altogether. Scholars argue about it. Some of the tablets are retellings of other tablets, only differing in style. Sometimes parts of the story change.”
Thick as Thieves, Chapter 2
This could easily be a description of our reception of the Gilgamesh story, too, with significant differences between various ancient traditions, and the role of Enkidu (loosely, a model for Ennikar in QT) changing drastically between the Sumerian vs. Akkadian versions of the myth:
In the Sumerian tales … Enkidu is Gilgamesh’s servant, not his friend. […] Indeed, it seems that converting Enkidu into Gilgamesh’s friend was the seminal change by which the Akkadian author lent unity to the materials which he used in the epic. […] To enable Enkidu’s death to turn Gilgamesh from the pursuit of lasting fame to a literal quest for immortality, the Akkadian author seized upon the sporadic hints of friendship in the Sumerian tales and applied them across the board, consistently terming Enkidu Gilgamesh’s friend, brother, and equal, whom he loves and is to caress.
Jeffrey H. Tigay, The Evolution of the Gilgamesh Epic
In QT, following MWT's tendency to make her myths a little more hopeful and YA-friendly, Immakuk and Ennikar escape the land of the dead, although we don't know how because that part of the tablet is broken. (Another neat callout to the Gilgamesh epic, which survives mostly intact but with significant portions missing!) But in the real version, Gilgamesh's love for Enkidu becomes a springboard for the poem to explore the inevitability of death: in fact, depending on what you understand the 12th tablet to be doing, Gilgamesh loses Enkidu not once but twice.
The parallel/earlier tradition of Enkidu as Gilgamesh's servant begs the question whether there are similar traditions about Ennikar in any of those alternate tablets Kamet mentions. If there are, it would point to another obvious parallel that a younger Kamet might have made—between Ennikar and himself as Nahuseresh's (or Naheelid's) right hand man, guarding him faithfully between adventures and somewhat subject to his dangerous whims. Compare these two passages:
Gilgamesh went up to the top of the mountain, and offered sacred flour to its peak: “Bring me a dream, mountain! Show me a good omen.” Enkidu built him a house for the Dream God, with a windbreak against the storm. He had Gilgamesh lie in a circle of sacred flour, while Enkidu slept like a snare in the doorway.
Gilgamesh, trans. Sophus Helle
Nahuseresh was a light sleeper, a matter of necessity for him, and when he’d opened his eyes in the darkness of his room and seen a moving flicker of white, he had been instantly alert, slipping his hand under his pillow for the long knife he kept there before he’d rolled quickly to one side. He’d found a woman standing calmly by his bed looking down at him. […] He had wanted to ask where she’d come from and what had become of Kamet, who should have been sleeping in the anteroom….
Queen of Attolia, Chapter 17
And of course the comparison to the original myth (all about death!) wouldn't be complete without Gen's apology:
"I'm sorry," said the king. "I know you wanted your chance at the emperor's side, even if it meant your death would come with his." "We all die," I snapped.
Thick as Thieves, Chapter 13
None of this is to negate the primary (and frequent) parallels between Kamet and Costis's journey/friendship and Immakuk and Ennikar's adventures in the QT poems! I just think the secondary, potentially darker parallels are interesting too.

every time i see someone claim the ancients were a magical indigenous utopia to aspire to (with 'a few little problems'), and any criticism of them as a society is apologia for native genocide, i clutch my head in agony. never change, twitter
#FF tag#ffxivtag#racism cw#anti-indigenous racism cw#there's just. there's so much. there's So Much#there's so much here that is just utterly balls out offensive in just. every direction and is in fact! incredibly anti-indigenous!#every time i start trying to summarize even one of them it turns into a massive tag rant!#tl;dr of about half of it is that if they *were* meant to be interpreted as indigenous; in the sense that it is applied to irl cultures#that's not heartwarming poignant representation; or even a depiction the narrative should be criticized for drawing its conclusions about#that's 'hey what the fuck are these parameters you've built into this world/magic system/society/etc re: the victims'#'the premise this setup is based on is already fucked; no matter what statement you have to make about it'#spoiler alert: 'indigenous genocide victims did it to themselves with no outside involvement'#and 'indigenous people want to reclaim land; culture; and government from colonizers by violently wiping out Our Way of Life'#'and that is in fact the *only* way for them to do so. it's flat out impossible for things to go otherwise. it's us or them'#would be INCREDIBLY offensive tropes even before you get into everything else being implied by this metaphor#which again there is SO MUCH don't get me started. i keep having to restrain myself because i know there is not enough room in the tags#but oh my god. anyway i keep getting jumpscared by this take on other sites and i phase out of my body every time#It's Bad#the salt files#the crit files#warning: worm grass

here's a neat vid, go watch it if you haven't yet
there's Some things that i don't completely agree with personally, like attributing the Third sin to Materialism rather than Connection (i'd argue that the Ancients had no big issue with being materialistic, considering their golden attires and such- and that going with Connection overall better addresses both the core of Materialism and relationships overall) and then attributing the word Dynasty specifically to asian cultures but that's more history/word definition beef more than anything djgklsjlcgjkd
oh how i'd love to have a debate with this guy about Ancients...
#spot says stuff#rw#history fact: a dynasty was present big time around the years 800-1000 (iirc) on a large territory in eu which included slovakia#at the core of it per its definition a dynasty is just ''the same family ruled over the lands throughout multiple generations'' tho so its-#-not special or anything. with that definition in mind you can see how dynasties were also european things with all the kings and stuff#its just more often used for asian countries cuz they held out longer with the family stuff probably. or all the damn royal family drama-#-that happened there........ my Gods i know only a few chinese stories but Shit man there was a lot djgklsjgld#i wonder if identifying family members in the Ancient society happened through colors... like Sparrows n her siblings are colored from-#-dark blue (Dad's og clrs before turning grey) to turquoise (Inkling) and through this color coordination are the dynasties named#that's some fun thoughts#this video is prompting some neat thoughts.. ego is the culmination of the sins in short is one of them for example#did this guy actually come into contact with shkika or smth. the 'civilization before the ones we recognize as ancients' stuff at the end-#-sounds very familiar. -makes it to the end- Ah. The RW Discord. i wonder where that thought originated n who parroted it from who#☝ personally making the conscious effort to not seep myself into the fandom Too much since i like thinking about this stuff so i dont want-#-any fan-based answers/speculations. just wanna vibe with it uninfluenced n see where that takes me. also the rw discord feels dangerous

everyone on earth probably has a hypothetical farming sim in their mind's eye that they daydream about on occasion because of the unfortunate situation that despite there being like a thousand farming games released every minute only like 4 of them are any good. and i think this is fun, i think its good to keep the imagination alive. if i made a farming sim i would bring back rival marriages from the old friends of mineral town. i want to steal someones wife.
#jk jk you dont steal anyones wife or husband. but it wasnt a popular feature because people felt like they were stealing someones spouse#plus the fact that characters married eachother after a certain amount of time made them unavailable for player marriage adding a timelimit#if the player wants to get married. but thats why i want it BACK i think its 1) hilarious and 2) interesting and makes the world feel alive#NOW part of the reason (outside of it being an unpopular feature to begin with) its not in like any modern games is probably because#devs don't know how to deal with non-gender-locked marriage candidates with this#i think its easy. everyone is bisexual. not just playersexual. textually bisexual#it'll be interesting if they always have a set pairup regardless of player gender but it could also be interesting if there was like#a little algorithm to give a couple non-player pairups as options. maybe make it random#or if a dev was tooooo ambitious they could add a matchmaking system that the player could be involved with if they wanted to play cupid LO#but that seems too much for a farming game. thats usually a whole other game in itself#but yeah i think its easy. its not like farming sim marriage candidates are all that deep characters to begin with#i think itd be fine if you had a couple randomized rival marriages...... i think itd be neat#my other farming sim daydream is NO fucking combat for the love of god FREE ME from combat#that is why i like story of seasons just a bit more than stardew#stardew has so much good farming mechanics but god i hate the mines. i think its so soso sososososososo boring#i also dont really like the turn based battles in atelier games and most atelierlikes either#(well i liked it in mana khemia but that was more turn based focused than alchemy focused)#i came here to farm. i came here to make potions. i came here to micromanage numbers. do not make me battle#but that is purely a personal preference thing LOL a lot of people really love farming game combat. i dont tho <3#MY DAYDREAM FARMING SIM HAS NO COMBAT... AND YES CUCKHOLDRY#(jk jk thats not what rival marriages are. but thats how people talk about them. which is fascinating)#(unfortunately it makes me laugh so thats why i keep making jokes about it. sowwy <3 )

I think people do simplify the lords in black because frankly calling them evil is ***less*** scary then what they actually are.
uncaring.
at the end of the day the lib can't be called evil because to them hatchetfield is just a sims game. they're so above it all reality wise that it's like calling a tiger evil for eating and hunting an elk.
the idea that something so above is. with so much power. is just using us for entertainment is horrifying. they arent evil because evil would require them to be on the same level of us at all.
hatchetfield is to them just a fucked up game of sims. and thats horrifying.

you can say that casper & nova aren’t meant to Perfectly parallel simon & betty’s relationship and behavior, and maybe that was what the writers intended - that this is a Vaguely Similar dynamic, not the Exact Same one. but in the absence of seeing any truly comparable interactions with simon & betty, or any interactions from when they were actually in a relationship, the casper & nova scenes are basically all we have to go off of for what the episodes are trying to tell us about simon & betty’s relationship, and kind of have to be taken as “accurate to them” whether the writers intended it or not.
