anyway, basically hylian courting is a lot shorter, think “lesbians with the uhaul” type of energy, like sort of the classical medieval “does thee wish to pursue marriage with this one?” ← how hylians ask u out for the first time lmao

if it helps, they do tend to get to know one another well, talking about morals/kids/life goals/preferred lifestyle/house/etc. pretty clearly and quickly, then using the in between time to sort of stew on that information

id say the total time is sort of something like 6 months? maybe 3/4 if they're really compatible

(so bc i love interpreting video game logic for real world building, I actually blame this on how fast Zelda/link get together in games despite having sometimes never met before that moment lol)

like i said, ill be posting about this later

pretty basic, just saying we don't really see hylians in big groups, despite the organizations they form, like kingdoms/knights or on a more personal level, towns/families/etc.

(once again, in-game appearances/video game logic translated to real life to draw these conclusions)

like not only are family units pretty small, like nuclear family setup, with like 2 parents and 2 kids, or single parent 1 kid type of situation, but the towns or collections of these families arent very big either

hylians kind of use their government the way it was intended lmao?

like the villages and towns matter more for everyday decisions than the kingdom/royalty, like Zelda would esstientally just be the mayor of Castle Town for those constant decisions,

while occasionally is called on to make decisions like for several towns or like is a natural disaster happens

meanwhile humans are, in comparison, in Way Bigger groups, both on an organization scale, and a personal scale

like u have all these specific branches of government, whereas im sure the population difference doesn't help,

and on a personal level, humans can easily have like multiple parents, lots of siblings, and once u combine that with each parent having family too, and those families like to meet up? All together??

yeah, itd look insane to any hylians (who’s smaller extended family may just make up their own village and that's it)

3. I've touched on this

like the use of spices, syrups, seasonings, etc

but also the complexity of dishes too, like chilling cream and mixing it for awhile to make ice cream, or even just getting ordering a pizza,

that's a lot of processing, like making the dough from flour and other ingredients, to letting it rise, to making the tomato paste, making cheese, then combining those things with any other toppings, all into one dish??

i like to think that hylians have only just started to touch on actual complicated cooking processes (as in BOTW, where they sell flour and salt, so people besides Link/Wild must know what to do with it)

this has the advantage of impressing any hylian with what a “creative genius” you are lol

4. look im just a fan of medieval time periods Links

so i think its funny if the hylians are used to like 4/3 layers and ur over here like, “wym, if i take off my shirt there's nothing underneath?”

one of them gets bold enough to ask, “d-do you not. do you not have undergarments??”

you “just my boxers? like just to cover my di-”

also this makes its easy to seduce people here? LMAO

clothes are def higher quality, after all there's not as many artificial processes or materials interfering,

plus u usually get some sick embroidery on it too!!

5. so like i get it, Link is the main fighter in games

but like, the few times there is a war/army in loz games, there's rlly not a lot of strategy, beyond just finding the enemy and fighting

tho im partial to that hylians/most inhabitants of Hyrule abide by the “lets meet up either literally by inviting each other or just between our territories to fight”

with occasional guerilla warfare (by any means necessary/stealth/ambush attacks/strategy) that's only rlly used either by Demise/Ganon, or by the wilder individuals/races in games

or maybe even the more civilized fighters in an emergency

and so that means by this logic that all of the Chain use kind of wild techniques compared to their race/kingdom lmao

id imagine its not too surprising to also see “every fight is a bar fight if its for my life” from individual travelers, so im sure they're not viewed too crazy (esp when ppl know their the hero that constantly has to deal with guerilla warfare from Ganon)

but its be hilarious to watch the reactions of both the Links realizing they’re in a bigger group that should be using “proper” fighting strategies and seeing the general publics reaction to this absolutely feral, armed to the teeth, trained hylians with their equally wild human lol

LMAO everyone thinks ur the reason they started using the more brutal fighting methods bc ur human, ur a bad influence lol

(humans would use it primarily, esp after we converted to use that method in warfare a couple hundred years ago i think?)

changing course a bit, hylians tend to use weapons (to compensate for difference in strength compared to humans, and since they don't experience/get a lesser version of adrenaline)

while humans tend to equally rely on weapons and our body as a weapon (marital arts/basic self-defense)

6. this is mostly bc the hylians only rlly seem to have the basics of music, books/stories, theater, and art

i have, surprise surprise, another post abt how i think this came to be,

mostly based on how human curiosity is indomitable and insatiable and the endless force that has not yet met its immovable object.

or at least an immovable object they haven't at least poked a little, out of curiosity lol

like we went to space for that reason, we reach the most dangerous corners of our planet (deep underwater/volcanoes) out of sheer curiousity/for the sake of simple knowledge of the thing

so needless to say, curiosity can absolutely drive any field to its limits, including the arts, which is why we can have stained glass, or movies/tv shows, hell, the marvel that is Hatsune Miku lmao

(fully for entertainment, a projection of light and sound, what is essentially magical illusions but u did it hte hard way, to the hylians)

on a different entertainment related note, i don't know if the hylians would be super into sports, or not really at all? mostly bc they have to use their fighting/training against real threats, not the sort of “fake” threats that sports are

but on the other hand i could see people like knights wanting to use their abilities for something other than violence and fighting bc their life or their villages lives depended on it

bet the Links would enjoy it for those reasons especially, what with at least sumo wrestling being a sport or activity for them at some point in history, and practically beg u for any new games to play, or to ref their games, bc whewwww

im sure they could get pretty competitive lol

7. obviously, their mostly influenced by the Japanese language

id almost like to imagine a sort of, if not outright Japanese (like with earlier heroes like Sky) then a sort of English-Japanese hybrid further along the line

sort of like how English has German/Greek/Latin roots and therefore u can see what words or structure comes from where, or even how u can understand a fair amount of basic words when other languages share the same roots (english, pants = spanish, pantalones)

would make for some funny miscommunications

or even better, most hylians liking ur unique accent or the Links love to hear u talk bc of it lol

Still working on angling the chain how I want it. He fidgets with it a lot. His one small comfort since I'm a horrible writer who took almost his entire family from him. Locket's flowery because his daughter picked it out when she was three (in present fic timeline she's twenty-four). Contains on either side a picture of her, and a picture of her mother who died very shortly after she was born.

Joined Gol D. Roger's crew kinda by accident when he was in his early teens, when they arrived on the island he had managed to get stranded on after stealing a fishing boat from the docks of his home island and getting washed ashore there amid a storm.

Roger's crew arrived there looking for a devil fruit that fisherman from a different nearby island had mentioned seeing there. Lyon had consumed said devil fruit by the time they arrived, with no knowledge of what devil fruits even were at the time; he was just starving and there was nothing else to eat.

Roger found this hilarious and immediately welcomed him aboard.

Found out a few weeks later that his Devil Fruit allowed him to control the wind amid a desperate firefight with a Marine fleet, in which he accidentally summoned a gale that capsized two Marine ships and caused the rest to retreat, gaining him his first bounty of 100,000 berries at the tender age of fourteen. He didn't even mean to, he was literally just shouting at the wind to just f#<%ing blow already because Roger's ship had gotten chased into the Calm Belt.

Roger also found this hilarious

He's a couple years older than Shanks and Buggy, but due to his naivety and gullible nature and smaller stature they viewed him as a younger sibling, varying between being protective and playing jokes on him because he's just such an easy target how could they not—

Really never had any ultimate goal as a pirate, was always fine with the idea of Shanks or Buggy becoming Pirate King after Roger's execution. He did want to be a captain, and he did want to eventually surpass his mother's bounty of 3.2 billion (Helena Lionne, her bounty still active even decades after she retired from piracy and disappeared from the World Government's radar, part of the generation immediately before Roger), but beyond that he just wanted to see the world and have a good time.

Ended up sailing with Shanks for a few years, with the mutual understanding that they would eventually part ways as friends and rivals once they both had enough money and enough crew to captain their own ships.

Lyon's bounty skyrocketed much faster than Shanks's, less due to Lyon's capability as a captain and more to the sheer volatility of his Devil Fruit ability. Being able to control wind currents without much understanding of them made him a natural disaster waiting to happen, resulting in his epithet of Lyon D. "Hurricane" Rollo because of his propensity for causing said storms (often by total accident). He gained better control over his abilities after hiring a navigator with far more knowledge of weather patterns, but still wasn't averse to triggering a catastrophic weather event intentionally if the situation called for it.

He and others close to him came to refer to his Devil Fruit as Kaze Kaze no Mi (Wind Fruit, Logia type), despite it obviously not being a Logia type fruit; Logia users can typically manipulate their own physical form to take on the element of their fruit, but Lyon was never able to do so. In addition, he learned later that he could also control ocean currents. The exact nature of his Devil Fruit therefore remained a mystery during his time as an active captain.

At the time of his crew's disappearance (canon timeline being around a year after Shanks lost his arm in Foosha Village) Lyon's bounty was up to 1.1 billion. No one knows what happened to them, but those who knew Lyon before he vanished don't believe him dead, in no small part because his bounty poster is still in circulation.

And that's my dum-dum in a nutshell. Kind of a large nutshell, but I could (and technically am given the fics I have planned) write an entire book about him. He and at least six of his crewmates have been with me for more than half my life, since I was just a lil teenage unknowable horror writing One Piece fics on fanfiction.net.

Funtime Freddy's creation was an attempt to make a new variation of experiments.

There were only two Funtime variants and they both didn't come out quite right.

Freddy was by far the worst of the two, the other being Foxy.

They were copies of previous Freddy and Foxy designs but mutated on purpose, Afton probably got some sort of twisted inspiration by the rotted forms of the previous experiments and mutated them on purpose.

As a result he got a sadistic bear and narcissistic fox, both white and pink.

The most interesting characteristic was the stitched together aspect of their flesh.

In various places on both animatronics it looked like the flesh opened up.

Freddy was even given the ability to open the stomach "flap"... which made his organs visible and seemed to serve as a storage method based on his behavior.

The issue was Freddy was violent, often taking sadistic pleasure in harming employees and seeing hallucinations.

As a result he was given a Bonnie plush named Bon Bon, which pacified the large beast.

You were an experiment that came after.

A successful one who managed not to rot!

You were made to be another bear, your design remaining rather basic.

Your build was similar to the original Freddy, regardless of your gender.

You have your own traits, of course.

Your color is different, your outfit is different, Freddy was simply used as a base.

You were one of the best experiments created, capable of speech and learning like that of a human.

Your fur was incredibly fluffy and you were given near free reign of your surroundings.

He wants to taste your blood... and bite your flesh....

The scientists try to make sure you never meet him face to face.

They fear for your safety...

Nothing good can happen if he keeps looking at you with bloody drool dripping down his face.

Freddy often talks to Bon Bon, whom he believes is alive.

It's learned from this that Freddy has unsafe intentions with you.

Which is why they keep you two apart, preferring to keep you with the successful experiments... not the failures.

Your life is pretty good, you like your caretakers.

Then life all goes to hell once Golden Freddy awakens.

When the facility reaches its downfall, the rot spreads.

Failed experiments mingle with successful ones and you try your best to part from it all.

This facility used to be home... now it's chaos.

You fear the idea of leaving it but you can't stay here.

So thoughts of escape course through your mind.

For the most part you can survive well, until you meet Freddy again....

The beast is out of his cage... and ready to play.

The moment he catches the chase is on.

Freddy's excited!

Finally! He's been looking for his Cupcake!

He just wants to squeeze you like a big teddy bear!

Freddy is a large bear.

He's stronger and a bit taller.

Being chased by him is terrifying.

When he catches up he slams his body into you, pushing and pinning you to the ground.

Looking into his eyes makes your stomach fill with dread.

They're bloodshot, deranged.

His claws dig into your skin, blood dripping down your fur.

"There's my Cupcake!" His voice is grating on the ears. "You've been ignoring me! How rude! Can't you see we're meant to be?"

His nose flares at the scent of your blood, quickly making him duck down to lap at the blood.

He's right... it is sweet.

Which would explain why he decides to take a large bite of your flesh, teeth digging into you and eliciting a pained roar from you.

Freddy likes your taste, your smell, your warmth....

He wishes he could just crawl inside and stay there.

There's no use in prying him off, his strength holds you down even when you kick and bite.

In fact, he encourages you to hurt him!

The more blood the better!

Freddy does a weird combination of affection and violence.

He bites and licks your wounds.

He nuzzles into your fur but claws your skin....

It's like his way of claiming you as his own.

He licks your nose playfully, all while nipping at you.

His maw is covered in your blood and your covered in his due to your fighting.

He takes pleasure in this... you fear this.

Once Freddy has you he doesn't plan on letting you go.

Clearly you were meant for him!

You wee made for him.

You're both bears... and he claims you as his.

Your thoughts of escape quickly dwindle...

The smell of blood is overwhelming to you.

Funny that they're tackling the idea of digimon evolving into a higher stage that they don't want to turn into, because of both prejudice and an alteration of their basic nature! That is something that's kinda interesting about the idea of monster evolution in these mon shows. The fact that it's irreversible, and not always entirely in the mons control.

Digimon usually doesn't have to deal with that because as digimon, their nature is already inherently malleable in the same way digital programs or files are. But that is also what makes it such an interesting topic to cover for that very reason. After all, some Digimon are classified as VIRUS types for a reason

Angoramon's prejudice isn't entirely unreasonable given the nature of his contagious composition is out of his control.

Still, there is definitely a middle ground between "YOU ARE BAD AND SHOULD BE DONE AWAY WITH JUST BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU ARE!" and bringing an infectious virus type monster along on a school trip with absolutely no precautions taken whatsoever x3

They should have triggered the psudo digital world state IMMEDIATELY upon Gyukimon going missing. Kiyo even considered doing it, but put it off to prioritize the school responsibilities. Usually this show is a lot better about making sure the horror story conventions don't feel contrived. Like episode 29 didn't have this problem. Them putting off the digital world shift for so long made sense in that episode. The fact they didn't shift to the digital world RIGHT AWAY in this episode for no reason is just stupid writing.

Sure. But it's also Kiyo's fault too. He has a vita bracelet. He could have shifted you and the missing Gyukimon into the digital world right away to make sure the humans all stayed safe. There's blame to go around lol.

I do like how this show has been routinely confronting the fact that the Partner digimon going BACK to their previous evolutions is unusual. Some folks who use a childhood of watching the Adventure anime as their primary frame of reference tend to not understand that.

I actually think it's super cool that they're exploiting the unique interaction that the digivice provides to manage to do a dedigivolve for another digimon besides their partner for a change!

RIGHT OKAY SO real quick rundown from what I remember, after I'm done studying I'll shoot you a DM if you wanna hear more!

The Fifth Season is the first book in the Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin. The main premise is that people live in a continent that's very geologically active (volcanoes, earthquakes, etc etc) and because of that they're just... used to it. Any day they expect a catastrophic geological event that will lead to a post-apocalyptic series of years that will realistically claim thousands of lives every time. These events are called Seasons, and there's already been a bunch of them (records of each at the back of the book!). So people just kinda live with that knowledge and organise their society around it.

Now, the big deal is that some people are born with Earth magic, the ability to control, predict and prevent such disasters. They're called Orogenes, and you'd think they'd be revered... but they're not. They're seen as monsters, exactly because they can also cause those disasters. There's a special school of them and all but it's mostly like a holding pen for them, they're also assigned special human handlers who are equipped to kill them should they go rogue. So it's also very much a social commentary.

The real geological horror element, though, comes from two things: first, the Obelisks, mysterious massice stone structures that just... low-key float around in the sky and are generally horribly ominous, often associated with Seasons. Second, the stone people (who iirc have a name, I just can't recall it rn). Human-like beings that are ...basically stone/gem, though, not organic. They feed exclusively on rock and are actually fuckihg terrifying exactly because not much is known about them. I can't really describe either of these more without massive spoilers though, so I'll avoid it in case you wanna read it.

There's also an ot3 queer storyline somewhere in there but it's not the focus. Pretty cool though!

As for triggers, please be warned for violence, genocide, bigotry, extreme death mostly through natural disasters, possible genocide, and child abuse. Off the top of my head.

Anyway, I still haven't read the 3rd book but the first two were GREAT and I can't wait to get the final one and see where this story goes. I think I'd put the first book especially among my Top 10 Fave Reads in general. Hope I sold it to you too! :D

I'm so curious about how the disaster trio in the princess!luz au first slept in the same bed together. Like how did this occur. Was it on accident or on purpose? What triggered it? Is it because they're all exhausted and the second bed is too far away? Was Luz or Hunter the cause, like injury or sickness and the other two doesn't want to leave and Amity is convinced it's okay to stay? The People(me) Want To Know.

And I can't imagine this scenario in any way without Amity being a flustered, tightly wound mess. Cause like seeing people in their sleepwear about to go to bed is an underrated form of intimacy I think. Plus Luz and Hunter are Weird but they make her feel like the weird one for feeling out of place with how casual they are about this.

GOD this is a good question. and there are So Many Ways that this could go down. my biggest instinct is that the first time it happens is a complete accident, but How that happens could be. so many ways

i'm not gonna count this as Official Canon (TM), just to leave room for if i end up wanting to write a different relationship trajectory

but CURRENTLY the scenario i'm softest for is:

amity is avoiding her roommates in the library, which has become habitual for her bc she barely tolerates them (think her dynamic with boscha back at hexside). it's late. hunter is in the library with luz & upon seeing amity, is very exasperatedly like. you cannot keep sleeping here blight. someone's gonna kill you

after some testy back-and-forth he's like Look. luz is about to go to bed, i'm on duty watching over her, literally just come sleep on the floor. you know luz would not let me murder you while you're sleeping.

on some level amity recognizes that this is hunter's tsundere-ass way of saying he's concerned for her wellbeing & also she really Doesn't want to get attacked for falling asleep in public. so she's like Fine. Whatever.

luz invites her to share the bed bc luz has no sense of normal boundaries or weird behavior. amity is like UM UH UM & luz is like OR NOT. SORRY!

amity sleeps for like four hours curled up like a cat on luz's carpet, spending the whole time very pointedly Not looking at luz or thinking about her or thinking about sharing a bed with her, because obviously she doesn't wanna do that, shut up. & then she wakes up n can Tell that hunter is dead tired. like borderline falling over.

so naturally she, in her tsundere-ass way, is like look. i'm not gonna make a habit of this and if you try to make me make a habit of this then i'll kill you. but if you sleep off the rest of your shift, i'll stay up and look after luz. you know i wouldn't let anything happen to her i'm not an idiot.

normally hunter would put up a fight about this but luz is shifting restlessly under her blankets like she's having bad dreams, so he's like.

.......okay.

bc if amity takes over then he can climb into bed with luz and gently nudge her awake and then hold her back to sleep.

which does of course make amity tomato-flustered and very quickly look away from them like. I Do Not Know What To Do With Expressions Of Intimacy Platonic Or Otherwise. I'm Gonna Die Here

i still gotta work out the exact logistics of luz's inner guard but i DO know that there's a small handful of people who are also tasked with guarding her, all under hunter's command. so when one of them shows up at the end of hunter's scheduled shift, amity is like great. i can get some more shut-eye.

i do not want to go back to my roommates. or get stabbed in the library. or sleep on the hard-ass floor. what if i just kinda......

and then she creeps onto the foot of the mattress like "i'm gonna catnap for 15 minutes and then stop committing treason. i know she said i could sleep on the bed but this is definitely still treason somehow"

i think maybe an implicit assumption of a lot of anti-porn or porn-skeptical sentiments is assuming that sexuality is opposite to rational thought.

there's a sense that you have to shut down your brain to get off. and that's a sexy notion--both in the sense of having widespread appeal and being kinda kinky :P--but it's deeply flawed.

in particular, there is an underlying sense that rational thought is the core defensive mechanism of all things decent and prosocial, and it must stand guard against our base, carnal natures to prevent disaster.

on both fronts, the notion is wrong: rationality and sexuality can coexist, and rationality is not harmless while carnality is harmful--both can be positive sometimes and destructive other times.

yet the so-called rational mind is often treated as the last bastion against predation (both as victim and assailant). porn with "problematic" themes is sometimes treated like a unique tool of regressive brainwashing compared to other forms of storytelling, but this seems to assume that the rational mind vanishes in service of sexual pleasure, leaving the subconscious vulnerable to implantation of backwards ideas. in actuality, i don't think porn is more likely to change someone's mind than any other kind of art, i just think it's often more honest about its hang-ups.

explicitness can seem tactless, but arguably the rawness of expression allows us to feel the whole of our responses to topics that may feel taboo and untouchable in the everyday.

and that's another thing... rather than a unilaterally celebratory attitude, i think pornographic stories can--intentionally and unintentionally--elicit challenging feelings: dread, ambivalence, confusion, disgust, and fascination, among other things. these may not be sexually arousing, but they are a different kind of stimulating.

and even if creators didn't intend for you to treat their work as anything other than, ahem, fap material, i think you can challenge yourself to read it as a story and to analyze it the same way you would other works.

if you fear losing your rationally-based moral compass in a whirlwind of carnality, then try and see if you can hold pleasure and pain together simultaneously. choose to make meaning of the work you have deemed meaningless.

when we approach with some curiosity, i think challenging topics in porn can act as a trick mirror that reflect a side of us that we may not have wanted to see, but still needed.

i would like to transmute the energy used to reject and avoid topics that trigger the discomfort of confronting the evils of our world into energy used to witness and examine our relationship to those evils. sometimes, they are so alien to us that they become objects of exotic fascination. sometimes, they are closer to our hearts than we may think. either way, i hope we can move past the idea that sexuality and thoughtfulness cannot coexist harmoniously.

The Diagnosis of Chris Redfield

It all began in the spring of 1998. Raccoon City had a case of cannibalistic murders and mysterious animal attacks, both on hikers and residents that lived near Raccoon Forest. The city’s police department guess a satanic cult of some kind, probably on narcotics of some kind, given the extent of the violent attacks. However, as the investigation continued, they guessed the base of operations for this cult was somewhere deep within Arklay Mountains, about northwest of the city. With public pressure, the RPD gave in to and put a specialized task force on the team known as the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, AKA S.T.A.R.S., led by Captain Albert Wesker.

Shortly after STARS is put on the case, they send Team Bravo into the suspected hideout deep within said mountains in the mid-summer. Radio contact is lost. Alpha Team went in, finding out that Bravo was attacked, and fled into the mansion and split up.

And it’s here. It is here that young Chris Redfield’s life takes a turn for the worst. Without getting too into detail, he straight up is thrown from the world of a young cop who just had fun little shooting competitions with his friends, to a gritty, beefcake, boulder punching man who lost his memory at one point due to a concussion caused by a fake Ada Wong, regains those memories, and eventually finds the origins of Oswald Spencer’s research and destroys the origination of the Mold.

But that’s just it. How does he stay this cool, badass character that just shows up and sprays down zombies like it’s nothing? Well...he doesn’t. I think the leader of the Alpha team has severe PTSD.

Please note that this post will be talking about severe trauma from a psychiatric perspective so please, if you see or think anything might affect you, I beg you to turn away. This post will also have spoilers for the recent Resident Evil 8 game for those that haven’t played.

So let’s start by defining PTSD. According to the American Psychiatric Association, PTSD is and I quote: “A psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, or war/combat.”

Okay so at the very least, Chris Redfield is probably already a qualified patient. “Terrorist act”? Check. I would absolutely say that the events of Resident Evil 6 count as that. “War/Combat”? We saw that for the most part in RE5. “Natural Disaster?” Aaaaah. Maybe six or seven? That one’s kinda weird to be honest. But serious accident? Yes. Absolutely! Why? Because, referenced in Resident Evil 5, we see Jill Valentine, who is basically his sidekick/best friend from the very first game, and even survives on her own for a bit in Resident Evil 3, falls out of a window after attacking Albert Wesker who betrayed STARS and was infected with some form of the zombie virus. Chris presumed her death, only to find out she survived the fall through, ya know, video game logic, and was experimented on by Wesker.

Which honestly, I was surprised he didn’t come back too. I mean, in Resident Evil 5, his last hoorah is literally in a freaking volcano! What is up with that?! But his son, Jake Muller (who until RE6 didn’t even know who his dad was), appeared and I really expected Wesker to just pop up like “Hey son. I’m back with those smokes. Also, you’re immune to the C-Virus so congrats. My zombie body helped make you with your mom--” Alright that got too weird. ANYWAY.

We’re here because Chris, in all fairness, has trauma. But let’s try and figure this out. The A.P.A. states that PTSD symptoms, though they can vary in specificity, fall into four categories:

Intrusion

Avoidance

Alterations in cognition and mood

Alteration in arousal and reactivity

Now I will say I actually have PTSD of my own. Avoidance and Intrusion are absolutely symptoms I got through, as well as Cognition and Mood alterations when triggered.

Something I noticed is Chris definitely doesn’t avoid anything so we can go ahead and cross that off. Chris Redfield always dives in headfirst cuz well...he’s the American Boy. He’s the definition of charge in and be the American hero because human lives are at stake so the second one is crossed off.

Now the third one, Cognitions and Mood. This basically means important details of events aren’t remembered, everything’s kinda blurred, which results in detached behavior and Survivor’s Guilt. Now while Survivor’s Guilt is often a result of PTSD, it isn’t a form of PTSD. It’s just another symptom. It’s basically kinda like when you eat way, way too many blue gummy bears and then your poop is blue. It’s blue because of the gummy bears. If you didn’t have the Gummy Bear, you don’t have the blue poop. 

Fun fact, that’s an actual thing that happened to my dad one Easter, but I think it might’ve actually been jelly beans. I can’t really remember.

Survivor’s Guilt could very well be something Chris suffers from, dating all the way back to the Mansion Incident in the first Resident Evil. He was one of few people who survived that entire incident and what happened afterward? Did he take a mental health break? Nope! Chris takes on a mission in Europe, as seen in Resident Evil 2 when Claire is going to Raccoon City to try and find her brother. 

Now let’s think about this. Rather than rest and recover from this event, he proceeds to pursue his investigation of the Umbrella Corporation. Chris is treated at the hospital and, despite trying to report their findings to the police chief, Irons, STARS is ultimately shut down. Chris then reports everything he needs to the FBI and even assaults a fellow officer.

The RPD tells Chris he needs a break and he says he’s going to Europe for a “vacation” but this was just an excuse to get to Europe in order to enact his vengeance on Umbrella for all the Hell it caused his city and possibly even the world.

That’s nuts. I wish I could do that at my work and get away with it. Just fight someone on the shift and then go to Corporate armed with nothing but a fry basket, ready to take them out.

This leads me to that fourth category: Alterations in arousal and reactivity. This is defined as reckless or self-destructive behavior, angry outbursts, hypervigilance, and even trouble sleeping.

This is entirely reckless. I mean, I get it. Going rogue because this company is obviously evil and has a hand in bio-terrorism. Yeah. That’s fair. Let’s take them out. But if only it were that easy, as we can see throughout the franchise. Despite Umbrella BARELY hiding their attempts at world domination, as seen in RE6, no one really flinches. They’re somehow still in the running.

Having said that, in Resident Evil 4, three years after RE3, Leon actually says in the introduction that Umbrella was wiped out by the investigation. Without digging into this, I’m presuming this is because Jill managed to escape Raccoon City and was able to report her findings as one of five survivors, six if you count Ada Wong. Which does make me wonder how they’re still hanging around like a more gruesome Team Rocket.

And the last category is Intrusive. Now, this is where this unravels, actually. Intrusive is basically intrusive thoughts. Those little thoughts or images that flash through just enough to unsettle you and if you’re like me and have diagnosed OCD, then you play these thoughts over and over in your head.

It’s like you want to go to the park. Okay, great, the park is outside. Nice. The outside is where people are. People aren’t that great, in my perspective. Bad people exist. Bad people like to hurt people. I’m a people that could be hurt by a bad person. Because of that, I can’t go to the park now. 

It’s like being stuck in a loop that wants you to be sad. Like, thank you brain. I just wanted to get stuck in the baby swing but now I’m going to sit on my phone and scroll through TikTok and be sad.

Intrusive thoughts are what had me curious. The intrusive category is actually where most people are commonly confused about what PTSD is as this is where we find that flashbacks fall into. A great example of a flashback in Resident Evil is actually in the fifth game. This is where Jill Valentine doesn’t really become Chris’ partner. We learn that during the last bout, they had against Wesker is where she’d fallen out the window as I mentioned earlier. This is explained in a flashback.

That’s interesting to me. Yes, from a storytelling perspective, it makes sense, but Chris remembers such vivid details, even Wesker’s eyes glowing.

But what’s interesting is, this event, in particular, seemed to affect Chris the most. Despite that his sister has been kidnapped by people affiliated with both Umbrella and Wesker, Jill’s “death” shook him up the most, which is fair. His best friend and partner throughout the entire thing, someone he shared his trauma with and even started the BSAA with was just gone. No even a body. Three months and nothing was found before she was declared dead. He dove into his work head-on, taking every mission he could!

This is why he takes deaths so personally. This is also shown in Resident Evil 6 when Piers, a young soldier who looked up to Chris and helped find him after he lost his memory after an incident with a fake Ada Wong, is infected with the zombie virus, he holds onto his humanity in order to save Chris, but ultimately does die in the underwater lab facility, supposedly by water pressure before losing his mind to the virus.

All members of the original team that infiltrated the Spencer Mansion in RE1. Let’s go ahead and cross some people off.

Wesker? Dead as of Resident Evil 5. Good. Stay dead. You suck! You’re like the Capcom version of Ganondorf, just stay dead, dude!

Burton?  Alive, but hasn’t appeared in a main RE game since the first.

Vickers? Dead as of the third installment of the game. He was the pilot who sacrificed himself after being bitten during the attempted escape from Nemesis in Raccoon City before the place was blown sky-high. You actually see him later again in the third game attacking the cop you meet in the second Resident Evil, interestingly enough, but what’s sad really is that he still has some semblance of his humanity and ends up groaning out the cop’s name before attacking and infecting that man. Poor guy. Really was just a poor soul.

Moving on. Jill Valentine? Still alive and definitely kicking but she’s become more of an iconic character for the movies. So from a lore perspective, as of the end of 5, she is no longer in the main series that we’ve seen. Mostly just referenced. This might change however later on as I do believe there will be a ninth installment coming soon if not already in the works as of writing this.

Frost? Dead. He was actually the first to die as soon as they touched down at Spencer Mansion, by zombie-dogs, no less. He stood no chance.

That means, of the original team, Chris is the only one still active. This means that he is the most trained to handle situations from a tactical perspective, but not an emotional one.

I mean, we see him really weighing the whole situation in Resident Evil 8. He’s seen smoking a cigarette, clearly stressed out and tired of dealing with everything, despite creating an Anti-Umbrella team called Blue Umbrella. Yeah. Not that creative, my guy. But he’s tired of hearing and seeing people die which...is fair.

I’d say he does have PTSD and it is Survivor’s Guilt.

Yes, he and his team are ready to die, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s losing people he’s had long nights with, sharing beer, shooting pool, busting bad scientists with, and he still loses them.

In the military, a soldier doesn’t fear his own death but the death of his comrades.

Survivor’s Guilt is really just a terrible thing. I’d say actually several characters in the Resident Evil franchise have this, including poor Mia Winters!

Chris might have it but uses it to his advantage. He uses the knowledge he’s gained from staying alive in an attempt to help others stay alive and ultimately bring down the Umbrella Coorporation.

Ultimately, Chris Redfield seems to be wanting to make up for the lives lost to this organization.

a thinker who triggered from being lost somewhere and gained a power that prevents them from getting lost again.

-has perfect sense of direction and balance; always knows their exact coordinates, eidetic or near-eidetic memory, enhanced sight and hearing to some extent, wouldn’t get dizzy or disoriented in a fight

-enhanced tracking senses; they can touch an object and get clues about its origin and where it’s been. their power also lets them track people in the vicinity, making it possible for them to fight blind if needed.

-an odd side effect: since alcohol and drugs can disorient you, this cape is immune to their effects. this can come in handy, but it also sucks, because painkillers don’t work.

This Cape is interesting, it's basically a grab-bag in the style of someone like Circus with the ways they can be applied and Interact with each other and go beyond what they were initially for.

You've got a built in GPS yeah, but then perfect recall which would enhance learning new skills, no disorientation, perfect balance, enhanced senses, learning about items through touch, tracking multiple targets.....Think about what kind of fighter this person would be.

Personally I'm thinking a hero who splits her time between the Protectorate team she's a part of, workshopping problems with other Thinkers for other PRT branches and doing search and rescue/search and destroy missions; either digging people out of natural disasters or chasing down people who were on kill-lists or somehow escaped Birdcage transports (Love the idea that Assault makes a point of leaving the room before she gets there whenever their teams meet)

I'm imagining someone who fights like a mix of Mouse Protector, Harbinger and Circus as and using batons and katana with ease depending on the targe but and this is important with absolutely zero panache or flair.

I don't know why but I'm put in the mind of someone with the mannerisms of Rei Ayanami; so we'll go with a costume kinda like her plugsuit....Beige bodysuit with some armour of the same colour, black detailing and a blue-grey wig; with a big difference in the form of multiple utility belts and tools on her person at all time, she's a thinker with hangups about being caught lost or unprepared anywhere.

The name....Slight Evangelion nod and following the Rei theme, whilst fitting with how bland and generic it is: "Wonder Girl"

I agree with you that it’s not like we have all the pieces and it’s a matter of guessing how they could tell a consistent story all taken together. That said, I think that Henry’s life in 1959, the origin of the indigo program and dimension X seem to have something in common, and it’s about the origin and the nature of the powers of the "numbers" and how it relates to other dimensions, something that Brenner may have known or guessed bf anyone else. So it goes beyond El, or Will or even Henry maybe, and that’s why Willel fighting Vecna seems like a side or secondary plot to me that I’m less excited about post S4. Unless it’s the only way to learn about the missing pieces?

Ah, you speak of the theories of where powers originate? I know people speculate that their power is from Dimension X/The Upside Down, but that particular theory doesn't quite mesh with me.

I only say that because we know the Duffers were deeply inspired by Stephen King and they even mention multiple of his novels as inspiration. They're even heading a new movie/series I think for one of his books.

Here's how powers usually originate in Stephen's universe, I'm sure you'll find some similarities:

As you can see, powers are something that manifests naturally but can also be triggered or forced to "awaken" with government experiments ad drugs. Just like Stranger Things.

Maybe the ST writers will tie the origin of powers to Dimension X/The Upside Down but I don't think they have to.

People with powers are the equivalent of mutants from X-Men. There's not really a rhyme or reason why people are mutants, it just kinda happens and can cause all kinds of disasters if not controlled properly.

As for Dr. Brenner, he was a very smart man but also very ignorant. I think if he knew Dimension X/The Upside Down existed, he wouldn't have so haphazardly threw his experiments in a room together or made the most powerful one an attendant for the rest of them. Brenner wanted to be somebody by being the master of all these children who actually could've been somebody if not for him.

I don't think he knew it existed until El yeeted Henry to another dimension. But once he learned it existed, he spent all his time training her to interact with it someday (while also training her to be a spy for the government, as his contract probably requires)

Brenner is dead and the government probably burned all their documentation about the Upside Down a long time ago. Henry is pissed off and isn't going to just nicely answer any questions the protags might have.

If there are more answers to learn about the Upside Down, then those answers will have to come about through the combined effort of Will and El. Will especially is deeply connected to that place even if he doesn't want to be. El can dive into memories and get answers from Henry by force if it comes to that. The only other way I can think of is if Owens knows something more (which I'm 100% sure he does) and he becomes the exposition dump...but I think it'd be a lot more entertaining for Will and El to accidentally learn things along the way rather than just being told by someone.

As for Dimension X/The Upside Down itself, I have written theories about what it is. I basically see if like... well here's an example. Have you ever played a Persona game? Namely Persona 5 in this case since it's much more obvious. No spoilers, but in the game, the protagonists can enter a rift called the "Metaverse". The Metaverse is formed by the collective thoughts, feelings, emotions, etc of humanity. It shifts and changes based on the general sentiment of people living in the area. They can be dramatic changes or little changes. The protags can enter the Metaverse and track down the avatar of someone in the real world and cure them of whatever feelings or thoughts are bringing them down.

That is how I view the Upside Down/Dimension X. It is like a natural part of the world just under the surface that can be changed and shaped if the person shaping it is strong enough to do so.

That is a key component in the "Will has creation powers" theory in that he accidentally shaped the Upside Down into what it is today during a moment of panic, just like how El accidentally opened the mother gate in season 1 while she was panicking.

Everyone might be subconsciously aware that such a place exists (religious people may refer to it as hell). Everyone's probably subconsciously connected to that place as it is a natural part of their world? Who can say.

While I don't think Dimension X/The Upside Down is the source of power, I do of course think a lot will be revealed about it next season and it ties Will, El, and Henry's story together. But I don't know how far that "story" really goes or if the connection existed before 1979 when El opened the first tear.

Spoiler-Free Review: Oooooh this was GOOD! It’s not even a horror novel, not really; it kinda feels like a Da Vinci Code-type thriller if it was crossed with Lovecraft, but this is a million miles better than either.

The main reason for that is the characters. They are AMAZING. Johnny seems like the obvious standout: a white billionaire genius who has saved the world by curing HIV and Alzheimer’s, among her many MANY other accomplishments. But she’s also selfish and destructive; she claims to be doing things for the sake of “the world”, that she wants to save as many people as she can, but she’s also oblivious to those around her, and is really quite selfish. It makes her rather unlikeable, but also very interesting, because she’s done a lot of good for the world, but she is really quite a terrible person.

And then there’s Nick, who is the balance to Johnny’s, well, everything: a Person of Color who is very much not a white billionaire genius, who has a regular shitty job and normal everyday concerns, with siblings and a mom who need him to pay the bills and buy the groceries. He’s immensely sympathetic as a character, and it certainly helps that he’s also the narrator, because I don’t think Johnny would make for a very interesting narrator even if she DOES have Main Character Energy. (Actually I think Johnny wouldn't make a very good narrator precisely BECAUSE she has Main Character Energy.)

While the plot’s amazing and the worldbuilding’s pretty solid, what really makes this novel stand out is the friendship between Nick and Johnny. It’s complicated and messy and deeply, deeply flawed, but it’s this novel’s primary emotional core, and it’s what keeps the reader onboard the ride that is the story. Without it, I don’t think this novel would be nearly as interesting, or nearly as enjoyable. The contrasts between them also help bring up some important themes about class, wealth, race, and gender. All those things complicate the friendship between Nick and Johnny, make it less straightforward and more nuanced. It also makes it clear just how powerful the bonds are between them, because this is clearly a friendship forged in something else other than shared commonalities.

So overall, this was a fun, fast-paced read. It reads more like a adventure novel or a thriller than a horror novel, and while it functions great in that regard, what really keeps the reader’s attention are the interesting characters and their complex, complicated friendship, which provides the strong emotional core around which the rest of the novel hangs.

Rating: four and a half ancient eldritch artifacts (4.5 stars)
