Which fictional character was the first husbando you had?
Kelsier from the book Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson!!!! When I was around 12/13 I also had a Thing for Marvel's Loki, Cicero from Skyrim, and Klaus from the Vampire Diaries but Kelsier really set my standards for all men, fictional and otherwise, who have come since. He forged the way I over invest and obsess over characters so please hear me out about this guy. This dude. This literal and absolute legend. Blond hair, powerful Mistborn, crazy, the cool mentor trope, one of the best thieves in all of the Final Empire turned revolutionary, God complex... Here are some choice quotes to sell you (most of it is from the opening half of the first book of the trilogy so not spoiler-y) because I swear he is just the best
/
Mennis shook his head. “You jest, but Tepper might have been right. I fear your visit will bring us grief.”
Kelsier smiled. “That’s why I didn’t contradict him—at least, not on the troublemaker point.” He paused, then smiled more deeply. “In fact, I’d say calling me a troublemaker is probably the only accurate thing Tepper has said since I got here.”
“How do you do that?” Mennis asked, frowning.
“What?”
“Smile so much.”
“Oh, I’m just a happy person.”
Mennis glanced down at Kelsier’s hands. “You know, I’ve only seen scars like those on one other person—and he was dead. His body was returned to Lord Tresting as proof that his punishment had been carried out.” Mennis looked up at Kelsier. “He’d been caught speaking of rebellion. Tresting sent him to the Pits of Hathsin, where he was worked until he died. The lad lasted less than a month.”
Kelsier glanced down at his hands and forearms. They still burned sometimes, though he was certain the pain was only in his mind. He looked up at Mennis and smiled. “You ask why I smile, Goodman Mennis? Well, the Lord Ruler thinks he has claimed laughter and joy for himself. I’m disinclined to let him do so. This is one battle that doesn’t take very much effort to fight.”
/
Kelsier pulled a chair over to the table for himself and sat down on it the wrong way, resting his arms on the seatback.
(Look this mental image is just hot idk)
/
“Good wine,” he said with a grunt. Then he looked over at Kelsier. “So, the Pits really did drive you insane, eh?”
“Completely,” Kelsier said with a straight face.
Clubs smiled, though on his face the expression had a decidedly twisted look. “You mean to go through with this, then? This so-called job of yours?”
Kelsier nodded solemnly.
Clubs downed the rest of his wine. “You’ve got yourself a Smoker then. Not for the money, though. If you’re really serious about toppling this government, then I’m in.”
Kelsier smiled.
“And don’t smile at me,” Clubs snapped. “I hate that.”
“I wouldn’t dare.”
/
"Ah," Kelsier said, "but being an annoyance is something that I am very good at. In fact, I'm far more than just a 'mild' annoyance--people tell me I can be downright frustrating. Might as well use this talent for the cause of good, eh?"
/
Dockson raised an eyebrow. “How do you ‘accidentally’ kill a nobleman in his own mansion?”
“With a knife in the chest,” Kelsier said lightly. “Or, rather, a pair of knives in the chest—it always pays to be careful.”
/
“You’re insane!” she said quietly.
Kelsier smiled. “I think that’s the second time today you’ve said that to me. You need to pay better attention—if you’d been listening to everyone else, you’d know that my sanity departed long ago.”
/
So he’s not a revolutionary, she thought. Kelsier was right again. I wonder if he ever gets tired of that.
/
Kelsier tapped lightly on the door, and Dockson strolled over, pulling it open.
“And he makes his stunning entry!” Kelsier announced, sweeping into the room, throwing back his mistcloak.
Dockson snorted, shutting the doors. “You’re truly a wonder to behold, Kell. Particularly the soot stains on your knees.”
“I had to do some crawling tonight,” Kelsier said, waving an indifferent hand. “There’s an unused drainage ditch that passes right under Keep Lekal’s defensive wall. You’d think they’d get that patched up.”
“I doubt they need worry,” Breeze said from beside the desk. “Most of you Mistborn are probably too proud to crawl. I’m surprised you were willing to do so yourself.”
“Too proud to crawl?” Kelsier said. “Nonsense! Why, I’d say that we Mistborn are too proud not to be humble enough to go crawling about—in a dignified manner, of course.”
Dockson frowned, approaching the desk. “Kell, that didn’t make any sense.”
“We Mistborn need not make sense,” Kelsier said haughtily.
/
Okay okay I'm going to stop before I just post everything he says but he's lovely and I adore him still and have for the better part of a decade.
There's also a boy named Zane in the second Mistborn book who comes close second to Kelsier. He's got the ego and skill but he's also unbearably edgy, hears voices that tell him to kill everyone, thinks a knife is a necessary part of sex, AND is a story for another time.
#personal#mistborn#hes in Fortnite now too i fckn adore this man#but brandsan said that he doesn't like fanfic so he remains a mental love

Budget MTGO, Card Draw [EDH]
[Detailed List Here]
In EDH/Commander there are a few things every deck needs, a way to draw cards being the chief among them. This post is the first in a short series that is hoping to cover some of the more accessible cards available for Magic Online to help you make sure your decks run smoothly, budget or not. With a small exception of outliers, which we will go over in detail, nothing on this list should cost you more than 1T (roughly 1USD), with the majority of cards costing closer to 0.10T.
To begin, yes, your keen eye is indeed correct that is a Sword of Fire and Ice, and a Timetwister, a Slyvan Library and a Necropotence. A lot of cards that are extremely pricey in paper end up costing almost nothing online, making it a great way to test out decks, or like me, play EDH against saltlords till 4am when you have to go to a meeting at 10am. Moving on...
I mentioned outliers to the budget earlier. These are cards that are not very much over budget (at least at the time of writing this) but, their abilities are extremely powerful for only a little bit more. Leading those off, Solemn Simulacrum. I don’t need to tell you why this card is good, pretty much everyone runs it in most of their decks (even though arguably outside of Red and White, or ways to exploit it, it’s not that good). Sadly, coming in at 1.2T its a little over budget for the core list, but I still thought it deserved a spot. Timetwister and Wheel of Fortune are two of the more powerful card draw effects in magic, let alone multiplayer. They refill your hand after you empty it, and offer hand disruption to your opponents. Unlike most symmetrical draw effects, like Howling Mine, these give you immediate access to your new cards, letting you push the advantage easily. Wheel of Fortune is also an excellent addition to any deck that takes advantage of its graveyard being full. Inversely, Timetwister acts as graveyard hate. Timetwister is closer ti 1.6T, and Wheel of Fortune is closer to 2T. However, they are so powerful I had to include them.
Finally, my sweet baby Sword of Fire and Ice. This is normally around 2T as well. It’s only really powerful in creature heavy decks, but when you can connect with it every turn it gives you so much of an advantage. You’re consistently drawing more cards than your opponents, breaking parity of resources. Additionally, that two damage can just hit your opponent, but its more likely to kill a Birds of Paradise, or an Oracle of Muldaya, or an Enchantress. Meaning you’ll be killing powerful utility creatures as incidental value. This is one of my favorite cards in magic, so it’s inclusion in this list is of course biased. But this is my list so... Shut up!
There are some extremely powerful cards we get to play with in EDH, but that doesn’t mean you have to break your wallet. Check out the list, and let us know if we forgot anything spicy!
Stay chill, stay hydrated. Love you. -IZ

Lost Memories (Redux) - Prologue
“Um...”
“Hello? Are you alive?”
“Oh, this is bad! If they find out we killed a human, we’ll get sent to Hell!”
“Relax! He’s not dead!”
The man slowly opened his eyes as he came to. Where he was at, he couldn’t explain. There was no floor, no ceiling, no walls, nothing. Just shimmering lights. Yet he wasn’t falling. It looked like he was... floating? Seven little kids were standing in front of him. The one in the center had dark, brown hair and black eyes. He was wearing a black shirt with gray stripes and blue shorts. He wore short socks and black shoes. He noticed that the man was awake.
“...Oh, you’re awake! How do you feel? Does it hurt anyone? Can you see us?” The boy asked as he checked the man’s body for any wounds. The man just stared at the boy, confused. What is going on?
“Thank God you’re alive! I was really surprised. I thought maybe we had killed you.” The boy with red hair and yellow eyes said. The man looked at the boy in a suspicious manner. He had a feeling that the kids were shady and were involved in some sort of business and so they were nice to him just to get what they wanted. The red-haired boy noticed.
“Oh! No, uh... W-We’re not in the least bit shady at all! Really!” He spoke as if he can read his mind. “It’s not like we hit you with a blunt object, or pushed you off a cliff, or ran you over with a car...”
“Alex!” The girl with blonde hair and purple eyes punched the red-haired boy in the arm, making him wince.
“Ha, ha... Hah... Um, so, to explain who exactly we are... Well, we’re just spirits who happened to lodge ourselves into your consciousness!” The boy with blonde hair and green eyes said.
The man just stared at them. No reaction. No emotion. Nothing.
“Nothing? No reaction to who we are... or to the situation you’re in now?” The red-headed boy asked.
“Hey, are you really okay? You can see us, right?” The boy with brown hair and blue eyes asked, concerned.
After a moment of silence, the man said this. “I see several... bug looking things.”
“B-Bugs?!” The red haired boy exclaimed.
“Well, I was a cute little bugger.” The brunette said. “Hey! You’re still a cute little bugger.” The boy with purple hair and magenta eyes said to the brunette.
“Um... You must mean that we look like pretty bugs! Like butterflies or dragonflies, right? Well, I’m glad you understand my “ant-tresting” fashion sense!” The red-head said. The other children looked at him with a look of disapproval. He noticed and chuckled nervously.
“That was terrible.” The blonde girl said.
“Anyway, I’m glad you can at least see us. Still, you’re really calm. I thought the moment you woke up, you’d be like, “W-What? Where am I?! Who are you people?!” or something like that, but... Wait. Your personality didn’t fly off with your memories, did it?” The blonde boy asked.
Again, the man said nothing.
“T-This is bad!” The red-haired boy said as he started to panic. “A-Alex, calm down! I’m sure his personality will come back.” The blonde girl said in an attempt to comfort him.
“W-Well, for now, let me explain things from the beginning. I’m Simon and these are my friends, Fredrick, Brian, Amy, Alex, Lance and David. We’re spirits from the afterlife. We were on our way to the human world for some business, and by accident, we sort of... collided... with your mind... I don’t understand it myself, but for some reason, we’re trapped inside your soul now. It looked like you lost consciousness from the impact. A-And, well... This is kind of hard to say, but... It kind of looked like your memories skedaddled, too! What a mess!” Simon explained.
Nothing. The man just simply stared at them.
“Sorry, go ahead and yell at us. I know Simon said a lot of things that probably don’t make sense to you. But, please say something!” Alex said.
“U-Um... I... don’t know where to start.” The man finally said.
“Yeah no, you’re right. We completely understand! Ha, ha...” Alex said, chuckling nervously, then looked down.
“We’re really sorry for our carelessness. We’ll do anything to help get your memories back. Besides, if we don’t, I’m not sure we’ll be able to separate from you. I’m not absolutely sure, but... I think we’re trapped inside the place where your memories used to be. Think about it like, your memories were pushed out by the amount of space we take up. So if your memories were to return, then we would get pushed back out instead. There might be another solution, but aside from what I just said, nothing comes to mind. I feel bad that we made you lose your memories. Let’s work together and try to get them back!” Fredrick said. The other kids nodded.
“A-Alright...” The man said.
“Alright!! Thanks for understanding. I kind of expected a “You better start running!”“ Alex said. Amy giggled. “I would’ve understood completely if you were that harsh with us.”
“You’re pretty accepting of things, huh? A very mellow temperament... It might be strange to say, but I’m glad it was your mind we got stuck in. Well... I guess that’s just how it is. From now on, we’ll work with you as hard as we can to get your memories back. We’ll do anything you need us to do. ...Is what I want to say, but we actually have some limitations. We can’t interfere with the human world. We can’t touch you and you can’t touch us. What’s more, people around us won’t be able to see or hear us. So we can’t investigate much for you, and we can’t move in your stead. In fact, we can’t move more than ten meters away from you! I said we’d do anything, but... But it looks like all we can really do is cheer you on.” Lance said, looking down.
“W-Well, it’s better than having no one, right? No matter what, we’ll always be on your side. I promise it won’t be like, “The culprits were the child spirits all along!”“ Amy said.
“Thank you. I appreciate it.” The man said, smiling.
“Thanks. I’m happy you would say so. Ehehe. Then let’s do our best together!” Amy said, smiling back. Simon then looked at the man, concerned.
“So, you really can’t remember anything? What about your name? Do you think you can at least remember your name?” Simon asked.
The man closed his eyes and tried to remember. Nothing came up. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t remember a thing. Just as he was about to give up, he remembered someone calling out to him.
Someone calling out his name.
His name...
“E-Eric... M-My name is... Eric.” The man said.
“Eric...? Is that your name?” Simon asked.
“I think so.” Eric asked.
“I see, that’s good. It’s a good start to remembering! Alright then... There’s no point staying here, so let’s go back to your world.” Simon grabbed Eric’s hand and started walking when he stopped him.
“Wait! Um, before we go, I gotta ask... What is this place?” Eric asked.
“Hmm? What is this place, you ask? It’s hard to explain... The space between dimensions... That’s the closest description. This world has many possibilities. And there exist as many parallel worlds as there are possibilities. For example, in one world you may be going to school, and in another, you may be just working. This is the space between those many parallel dimensions that isn’t connected to any of them. To put it bluntly, right now you’re suspended in the rift between worlds. But... We don’t know which world you came from. Oh, but... Any world is a world that you were in. There’s no such thing as right or wrong with parallel worlds. So let’s go back to the world you were in, and recover your memories! There are lots of ways to do it, like talking to your friends, or looking at your phone’s history.” Simon explained.
“Oh, but just a sec. Be very careful of who you trust.” David said. Eric and Simon both looked at him.
“Why?” Eric asked.
“Humans are brutal and cruel beings. You should only tell people you really trust about your amnesia. Otherwise they might try to give you memories you’ve never had. Like, “You own me 10,000 dollars so you’d better pay me back,” or something. There’s no way you could tell if what they said was true, right? Some horrible girl might introduce herself as your girlfriend and take you away from your actual one. You might be told you don’t have a job, and then get fired later on. Or someone with no relation to you tricks you into joining a pyramid scheme! Or maybe you’d wind up in a situation where you find yourself being shipped off overseas! Right? It’d be terrible if that happened, right?” David asked.
“Uh, can’t I call the police?” Eric asked.
“Yeah, I see what you mean. But it’s not like the police know who you are, right? In that case... What would happen to you, then? If you said you had amnesia, wouldn’t they force you into a hospital? You’d probably be confined to your hospital room until your memories returned. Even if you were allowed outside sometimes, for the most part you’d be shut up inside, right? For other people, that might be okay, but for you, it isn’t! Your memories haven’t disappeared because of any mental or physical problems. They’re being pushed out by our existence. So staying home or at the hospital wouldn’t help. In fact, without stimulation, you’d just get worse. Sitting around, spacing out in the hospital room without any memories would worsen your mind. You might forget how to drink water, or even how to breathe! Advice to Avoid Such a Terrifying Ending... #1! Gather information! Try to actively meet people and investigate what kind of person you used to be. Who you, your family, and your relationships were, and what you were doing. Increase your knowledge and fill up that outer part of your memories. Once you do, I’m sure it’ll trigger something, and the rest of your memories should return. As that happens, we’ll be pushed out and eventually be able to separate from you. It’s a long shot, given our situation, but at the moment, it’s the best plan we have.” David looked down. “...Sorry. I keep talking about nothing but negative things.” He looked up at Eric. “But first... I think it would be good to confide in your family. They won’t believe that seven child spirits got stuck in your head, but they’ll at least provide some information. We can think more about the plan after that.” He said.
Simon nodded and looked at Eric. He smiled and offered him his hand. “Now, let’s go back to your world! The method is simple. Just close your eyes and think. With no memories to influence you, whatever world you can recall is the world that you desire. Only, I think there are several worlds like that... Choose the world that you feel is right.” He said.
Eric nodded and closed his eyes.
He is just a man with no memories. He had no idea what he was supposed to do, no idea where to go... He is lost. But, seven children came to help him and he is happy. Happy that someone was there to help him. He knows that he can trust them. As soon as he knows the people around him more, he will tell them too. He wants to get his memories back. Nothing more than that. His thinking is on that alone. And the children will help him no matter what. Even when they can’t move ten meters away from him and can’t interfere with the human world, he knows that they can still protect him if there is any danger. As he starts thinking of a world he feels is right, he starts thinking to himself.
“What will happen to me from now on? Will I get my memories back? Or will the task become impossible?”
He is then enveloped in a bright light.

Superfriend Showdown - Ixalan
Alright, all three Planeswalkers from Ixalan have been previewed, so now it’s time for the hardest task of all: figuring out if any of them are good enough to make it into my Commander decks. In particular, are any of them going to make it into my Progenitus led Superfriends deck? If not, where else do they belong, if anywhere?
Vraska, Relic Seeker
First up is the headliner of the set. Ol’ Snakey herself, Vraksa, formerly Unseen, now apparently quite visible. Let’s start with the basics: Vraska costs 6 mana, which is decidedly unfortunate, as there’s only room for so many expensive Planeswalkers in the deck. That said, she starts with 6 loyalty and can immediately bring herself to 8, which is hefty. As for the abilities, creating 2/2s is not irrelevant, as token blockers are super useful, though you need several activations before it’s worth it. Destroying an artifact, creature, or enchantment is fantastic versatility for Commander, and the Treasure token is useful in a 5 color build. As for the ultimate, it’s a pretty decent way to fuck over the biggest threat at the table, though you’ll have to find alternate ways of killing your other opponents. All told, I think Vraska has a lot of potential, but the question really is whether or not she’s better than another ‘walker currently occupying her slot.
Potential Cuts
The first, most obvious question is whether or not new Vraska is better than old Vraska. Well, Shy Vraska is a little cheaper, but not so much so that I’m worried about it. Pirate Vraska’s plus ability is generally better this time around, as creating tokens is useful both offensively & defensively. The minus is a bit of a wash. They cost the same, with basically the only difference being that Unobserved Vraska can take out enemy Planeswalkers, but doesn’t get any Treasure. Planeswalkers are the least relevant permanent type to remove in Commander, so it’s not too great of a loss if I decided to swap to new Snake-face, but it does come up sometimes. As for the ultimate, I will say I’ve pulled it off before, but I doubt that it’s a better way to win than simply wrecking someone’s life total. On balance, I’m thinking new Vraska may just edge out old Vraska this time around.
Scary Garruk (Scarruk?) is the other possible cut for new Vraska. Here, we actually lower our CMC average, which is always nice. On the other hand, Sideways Garruk has 4 abilities. He can take out creatures or Planeswalkers, so we get 2 out of 4 permanent types, though to be fair, they are the easiest types to control. So, overall, I think new Vraska wins on permanent destruction. However, a 3/3 deathtouch is light years better than a 2/2 menace in the world of Superfriends. A single deathtouch creature on the board can deter an entire round of attacks, which is critical given that the gameplan of Superfriends is to be able to get multiple activations out of every Planeswalker we have. The ultimate is solid, and makes the game nice & political (Here, go deal with that asshole for a while!) Generally, I’m inclined to keep Garruk in, just on virtue of his rabid beasts alone.
Other Decks: The other decks I have that Vraska, Relic Seeker could be put in are The Gitrog Monster and Kydele/Tymna partners, but I don’t think she fits either one particularly well, in mechanics or in flavor. Superfriends it is!
Verdict: At the moment, I’m leaning towards replacing Vraska the Unseen with Vraska, Relic Seeker. I think her Pirates will be more useful more often than killing Planeswalkers, which is basically what the decision boils down to. Since she doesn’t make sense in any of my other decks that can house her, Superfriends it is!
Huatli, Warrior Poet
I love this chick. She’s badass. So, things. Well, at 5 mana & 3 loyalty, she’s not off to the best start. But, she effectively comes in with 5 if you plus her right away. However, unless you’ve got a great creature out, it’s a pretty useless ability. For the most part, you’re going to get her into play and immediately churn out a 3/3 Dino. That middle ability is pretty much where the power lies. The ultimate is cool, and a great way to gain some extra late-game relevance for aggro Boros builds. But I’ve gotta say, in a grindy deck like Superfriends, sticking around at 3 loyalty makes me nervous.
Potential Cuts
Oof... There’s no way. As much as I think Huatli’s Dinos would be useful, Nahiri’s ability to exile things is just so useful in Commander that there’s no way. Also, coming in at 4 mana and helping filter the deck is good stuff too. The ultimate is pretty mediocre on both ladies in this build, though Nahiri’s let’s me throw Contagion Engine into play for free, meaning as long as I ultimate her with 4 mana up, I can probably take out a significant chunk of opposing creatures and potentially ultimate a couple other Planeswalkers in the same turn. That’s big game.
While not exactly the same colors, I do have three W/B Planeswalkers in the deck currently, and Tarkir Sorin is the most underwhelming of the bunch. Compared with Huatli, Sorin has 2 things going for him. One is that the tokens have flying, which is a sore need for this deck. A few good flying creatures can easily take out a whole army of Planeswalkers, so having defense for that is essential. Also, Sorin’s ultimate is way better for this deck than Huatli’s. Aside from token-based strategies, having to sacrifice a creature every upkeep destroys certain decks, and you can get to the emblem faster than you might think at first glance. I think I’m leaning towards keeping Sorin for now.
Other Decks: I actually have several other decks that would support Huatli’s colors. Gisela, Blade of Goldnight is probably the biggest slam dunk, since I tend to have creatures out early with her, so Huatli’s + ability is relevant. Also, the token making a theme of that deck, and the ultimate will help pave the way for alpha strikes. I’ve also got Kaalia of the Vast, but that’s a major flavor fail; Kynaios & Tiro, though they’re much more defensive than she wants to be; Ishai/Bruse Tarl partners, but she just doesn’t do much for that besides the ultimate; and Ruhan of the Fomori, but she also doesn’t serve much use here, although gaining 7 life per turn is fun.
Verdict: As far as Superfriends goes, Huatli is a pass. She just doesn’t do enough that is in line with what the rest of the deck does. Sorry gurl, no Superfriends this time. However, buddy on up with Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. I have a feeling you two could be good friends.
Jace, Cunning Castaway
Jace, Jace, Jace, what am I going to do with you? Why do you do this to me? Not only do you make me perspire every time I look at you, but you tempt me with an infinite combo while you’re at it?! That’s just not fair.
So, the dilemma is this: does the possibility of comboing off by creating inifinite Jaces with Doubling Season justify including this in Superfriends when the other two abilities are... ok at best? I mean, creating Illusions is great, but going down to 1 loyalty is not, at least in Commander. And the looting is mostly useless since I almost never attack in Superfriends. But, I have multiple ways to assemble the combo with relative ease, and unless an opponent has a boardwipe in hand that obliterates Planeswalkers, it’s virtually impossible to lose. This one is a quandary.
Potential Cuts
Wind-Machine Jace has some good stuff going for him. His + does help protect against token strategies, and his normal - is solid card advantage. And, if you do get to ultimate him, there’s no reason you shouldn’t be just simply winning on the spot. Altogether, I haven’t exactly seen him run away with games, but he’s a solid inclusion that has real application in some metas.
Hood Jace is also solid. The card advantage is real, bouncing problem creatures is real, and the emblem is a real pain in the ass. In short, he’s got a real reason to be in the deck and I’m not sure I feel like cutting him just to try out a fun combo piece. On the other hand, I do run this Jace in at least one other deck, so it’s not like I’m ignoring him & his lil ball of illusion light.
I also have Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Teferi, Temporal Archmage, and Tamiyo, the Moon Sage in this deck, but there’s no way in hell I’m cutting any of those three ballers.
Other Decks: Obviously, any deck with Blue can support Swashbuckling Jace, but do any decks really want him? He’d be a flavor win in my Thassa, God of the Sea deck, being a sailor & all that, but he’s not the best fit mechanically. He would fit mechanically more nicely into my Derevi, Empyrial Tactician deck, but even then I’m not sure. I don’t have an Edric, Spymaster of Trest build, otherwise that would be a slam dunk.
Verdict: Honestly, I’m tempted to try Salty Jace in Superfriends. The deck needs more ways to win out of the blue (pun-intentional), and he could be the ticket to doing that. If I do cut anything, it’ll probably be Contemplative Jace that gets the axe, just because his abilities are least unique amongst the crowd.
So that’s that. I think I’ve found homes for all three Ixalan Planeswalkers, at least to try out. But who knows, I could be super wrong! And then my Super friends would be super dead.

Original Review
Note: Ahhh the book that started it this Brandon Sanderson addiction. Note that there will be spoilers for all the Mistborn books including the Wax and Wayne series and Mistborn: Secret History. So if you haven’t rad all those then don’t read this reread ramble…review thing.
Review:
Hearing how the noblemen treat the skaa is so sad.
“‘Very well, Tresting,’ the obligator said. I will carry your proposal to Lord Venture, as requested. He will have a favorable report from me on your operations here.’ Tresting held in a sigh of relief. An obligator was required to wintess any contract or business deal between noblemen. True, even a lowly obligator like the ones Tresting employed could serve as such a witness—but it meant so much more to impress Straff Venture’s own obligator.”—Page 3
Hey, Straff Venture is mentioned.
“‘Local lords rule in the West,’ Kelsier said, ‘and they are far from the iron grip of the Lord Ruler and his obligators. Some of these distant noblemen are finding that happy skaa make better workers than mistreated skaa. One man, Lord Renoux, has even ordered his taskmasters to stop unauthorized beatings. There are whispers that he’s considering paying wages to his plantation skaa, like city craftsmen might learn.’”—Page 8
Gee, I wonder why he’s doing that.
“‘But, what of us?’ Tepper asked, terrified. ‘What will happen when the Lord Ruler hears this? He’ll think that we did it! He send us to the Pits, or maybe just send his koloss to slaughter us outright! Why would that troublemaker do something like this? Doesn’t he understand the damage he’s done?’”—Page 15
Hey, Koloss have been mentioned.
“And Vin liked solitude. When you’re alone, no one can betray you. Reen’s words.”—Page 19
Hey, Ruin. I forgot how paranoid Vin was.
Hey, Dockson! God this book is depressing, it’s reminding me of all the people who die in the future books.
For some reason I find that Camon trying to swindle Marsh is just hilarious. Like dude that’s a mistake.
“That left only the small box that contained her personal effects: a pebble from each city she’d visited, the earring Reen and Vin’s mother had given her, and a bit of obsidian the size of a large coin. It was chipped into an irregular pattern—Reen had carried it as some kind of good luck charm.”—Page 46
Do you think Vin still collects pebbles from the cities she visits after she joined Kell’s Crew? Also the earring of evilness.
Dox is so done with Kell’s shit.
Pfffft 8 metals? Try 16.
“The newcomer wore a dull tan overcoat, a pair of brown trousers, and a simple white shirt. However, his face was far more distinctive than his clothing. It was knotted and gnarled like a twisted piece of wood, and his eyes shone with the level of disapproving dissatisfaction only the elder can display.”—Page 69
I love that “level of disapproving dissatisfaction” quote.
Overthrow the Final Empire? Really a simple task, it only takes one book.
“‘Kelsier,’ Ham said slowly. ‘The Lord Ruler is the Sliver of Infinity. He’s a piece of God Himself.’”—Page 82
An interesting way of describing the Lord Ruler.
“The trick is to never stop looking. There’s always another secret.”—Kelsier, Page 84
Is this the motto of the cosmere fandom?
House Venture comes up a lot and I never noticed, I guess because they’re like the most powerful house.
“I can feel our goal now, can sense it, though the others cannot. It…pulses, in my mind, far off in the mountains.”—Page 104
Pulses are bad.
This planning to take the Lord Ruler down would work a lot better if they had Steris.
“Suddenly, Breeze laughed. He leaned back in his chair, downing the last of his wine. ‘You blessed madman! You killed him, didn’t you? Renoux—you killed him and replaced him with an impostor.’”—Page 122
Well, you aren’t wrong.
“‘I’m sure that you do—but I have to be honest with you, Kell. Despite what she did…sometimes I wish that you hadn’t been the one to survive the Pits.’ ‘I wish the same thing every day.’”—Page 131
Oh shit, I forgot about this quote.
“‘Good,’ Kelsier said happily. ‘Now, let’s go jump over that wall.’ ‘What?’ He left her standing dumbfounded in the street. She watched him approach the base of the wall, then scurried over to him. ‘You’re insane!’ she said quietly. Kelsier smiled. ‘I think that’s the second time today you’ve said that to me. You need to pay better attention—if you’d been listening to everyone else, you’d know that my sanity departed long ago.’ ‘Kelsier,’ she said, looking up at the wall. ‘I can’t…I mean, I’ve never really even used Allomancy before this evening!’ ‘Yes, but you’re such a quick learner,’ Kelsier said, pulling something out from beneath his cloak.”—Page 145
God, Kelsier.
I forgot how weird the Mistwraiths are and how I want nothing to do with them. Do they still exist post-Harmony?
“Then she saw the carriage. It was parked by the side of the highroad, and Vin could see that there was a man waiting beside it. ‘Ho, Sazed,’ Kelsier said, walking forward.”—Page 154
SAZED! MY CHILD!
“‘Did he beat you often?’ Vin asked. Kelsier frowned. ‘Beat me? No, he didn’t beat me at all.’ ‘You stopped him, then?’ Vin said. ‘Maybe that’s why he doesn’t like you. How did you escape? Did you run, or were you just stronger than him?’ ‘Vin, Marsh never tried to beat me. We argued, true—but we never really wanted to hurt one another.’ Vin didn’t contradict him, but he could see in her eyes that she didn’t believe him. What a life… Kelsier thought, falling silent.”—Page 156
Oh god, Vin doesn’t believe Kell when he says Marsh didn’t beat him. Oh god, that’s so sad, my poor baby.
Aw, Vin and Elend will never be able to see the green plants.
“I can’t eat like this, she finally thought with frustration. ‘Could you not stand over my shoulder like that?’ Sazed nodded. He took two steps forward so that he stood next to her chair, rather than behind it. He adopted the same stiff posture, looming above her just he had before. Vin frowned in annoyance, then noticed the smile on Sazed’s lips. He glanced down at her, eyes twinkling at his joke, then walked over and seated himself in the chair besides her.”—Page 163
You sassy Terrisman, I love you.
“Vin sighed, rolling her eyes. ‘Fine.’ It isn’t like I can do anything else but sit here. ‘I think I have the perfect religion for you.’ Sazed said, his normally stoic face revealing a glimmer of eagerness ‘It is called ‘Trelagism,’ after the god Trell. Trell was worshipped by a group known as the Nelazan, a people who lived far to the north. In their land, the day and night cycle was very old. During some months of the year, it was dark for most of the day. During the summer, however, it only grew dark for a few hours at a time. ‘The Nelazan believed that there was beauty in darkness, and that the daylight was more profane. They saw the stars as the Thousand Eyes of Trell watching them. The sun was the single, jealous eye of Trell’s brother, Nalt. Since Nalt only had one eye, he made it blaze brightly to outshine his brother. The Nelazan, however, were not impressed, and preferred to worship the quiet Trell, who watched over them even when Nalt obscured the sky.’”—Page 178
This is why we reread Brandon Sanderson.
Whoa there, Marsh’s nickname was Iron Eyes…little on the nose there.
ELEND VENTURE TIME!!! I have a massive crush on Elend Venture he’s just so…charming and funny and cute.
“‘My coin pouch,’ Kelsier said, smiling. ‘A good thief can steal clever tricks as easily as he steals boxing. I’ve started being more careful since you tailed me last week—at first, I assumed you were a Venture Mistborn.’ ‘They have some?’”—Page 239
Heh…yeah, they do.
“Vin shrugged. ‘To tell you the truth, I’d kind of like to see one of those flowers for myself.’”—Page 287
Well, that sucks.
“I can’t believe people read books this big, she thought.”—Page 300
When noobs look at my cosmere collection.
I forgot what a bitch Shan was, her and Hashal from Roshar should get together.
Kell met Hoid and Straff.
“‘Lord Kelsier,’ the foremost man said, saluting. ‘My name is Captain Demoux. Please, gather the recruits and come with me—General Hammond is eager to meet with you.’”—Page 345
Demoux!
I wonder if that Handkerchief thing is still a thing in the later eras.
“Spook frowned. ‘Niceing the not on the playing without.’ ‘I have no idea what you just said, child,’ Breeze said. ‘So I’m simply going to pretend it was coherent, then move on.’ Kelsier rolled his eyes. ‘Losing the stress on the nip,’ he said. ‘Notting without the needing of care.’ ‘Riding the rile of the rids to the right,’ Spook said with a nod. ‘What are you two babbling about?’ Breeze said testily. ‘Wasing the was of brightness,’ Spook said. ‘Nip the having of wishing of this.’ ‘Ever wasing the doing on this,’ Kelsier agreed.’ ‘Ever wasing the wish of having the haven,’ Ham added with a smile. ‘Brighting the wish of wasing the not.’ Breeze turned to Dockson with exasperation. ‘I believe our companions have finally lost their minds, dear friend.’ Dockson shrugged. Then, with a perfectly straight face, he said, ‘Wasing not wasing is.’ Breeze sat, dumbfounded, and the room burst into laughter. Breeze rolled his eyes, indignantly, shaking his head and muttering about the crew’s gross childishness.”—Page 397-398
I love my babies so much.
“Maybe I should pay just a little more attention to things like that, Elend thought to himself. Valette suffers my hair the way it is, but would she like it better if I had it styled?”—Page 471
Aw, I adore Elend.
“His father sat in his chair, speaking quietly with TenSoon—the Venture Kandra. Elend still wasn’t used to the creature’s most recent body, which had once belonged to a servant in the Hasting household. Elend shivered as it noticed him. It bowed, then quietly retreated from the room.”—Page 474
TenSoon! My baby!
“We Mistborn need not make sense,”—Kelsier, Page 489
Aw, Vin said that in the Hero of Ages, she got it from Kelsier!
I loved the Vin-Shan fight, it was so epic.
“‘Elend, how can you read at times like this?’ Jastes asked. Elend looked up from his book. ‘It calms me.’”—Page 524
I think it might have been the way the audiobook narrator said this line but it made me laugh.
“I pretty much ended atium production in the Final Empire for the next three hundred years or so.”—Kelsier, page 550
300 years you say?
“Farewell. I’ll tell Mare about you. She always wanted a daughter.”—Page 586
Bullshit, you couldn’t just let go and now you’re off terrorizing Spook.
“‘Valette?’ Elend asked, stupefied. Vin jumped up, grabbing him a joyful embrace, hanging onto him rightly and burying her face into his shoulder. ‘You came back,’ she whispered. ‘You came back, you came back, you came back…’ ‘Um, yes. And…I see that you’re a Mistborn. That’s rather interesting. You know, it’s generally common courtesy to tell one’s friends about things like that.’ ‘Sorry,’ she mumbled, still holding on to him. ‘Well, yes,’ he said, sounding very distracted. ‘Um, Valette? What happened to your clothes?’ ‘They’re on the floor over there,’ she said, looking up at him. ‘Elend, how did you find me?’ ‘Your friend, one Master Dockson, told me that you’d been captured in the palace. And well, this fine gentleman here—Captain Goradel, I believe his name is—happened to be a palace solider, and he knew the way here. With his help—and as a nobleman of some rank—I was able to get into the building without much problem, and then we heard screaming down this hallway…And, um, yes. Valette? Do you think you cold put your clothes on? This is…kind of distracting.’”—Page 616-617
I love this scene so much. They’re one of my favorite pairings.
“‘You don’t understand,’ he wheezed. ‘You don’t know what I do for mankind. I was your god, even if you couldn’t see it. By killing me, you have doomed yourselves…’”—Page 632
Yeah…this really messed things up. But no time to worry about that, I finished this book! At like four in the morning but it was great. I’ve missed this world and these characters so much. It was just as good as when I first read it, if not a little sadder because I know who’s going to die and it makes me sad. I really enjoyed this book and hopefully in 2017 I will reread the rest of the series.

There’s Always Another Secret
18th September 2016
For a few years now I’ve put off buying a kindle. Several people told me how great they were, but a few things always drew me away from e-readers when I considered jumping on the bandwagon. The initial expense can be high, book availability can be an issue, you can’t drop it in the bath, it needs charging, can I read on a screen for extended periods? That said, I eventually ended up taking the plunge after spotting a few decent books on Amazon for cheap. I needn’t have fretted though, Kindles are fantastic things. I’m reading more than I ever have, it’s light as a feather (and for some of the books I’ve picked recently, this is a gift from the gods… I’m looking at you The Way of Kings :/), and also a charge lasts weeks. Brill. And who takes baths these days?!
Having just finished the first two books in Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive (my first time reading BS), I was looking for something new, so I settled on his arguably most famous series: Mistborn. This series was originally a trilogy containing the titles, The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension & The Hero of Ages, but now BS has added a further three books (with a fourth in the works) in his Wax and Wayne series. So, to tide me over until Pat Rothfuss releases book 3 I’m going to work my way through all of these. Reading a finished series for a change! Here are a few thoughts I had after the reading the first book…
*a few spoilers inbound*
Book One: The Final Empire
The first book in the series sets out with a nobleman looking out over his plantation, and ash falls from the sky. We get a glimpse of our first Mistborn as he eyeballs Lord Tresting before vanishing into the sea of Skaa workers. Kelsier, the Survivor of Hathsin is one of the more powerful users of the magic system that Sanderson has created, and we get a show fairly early on (although offscreen) of his ability to ‘go medieval’ on whomever he wishes. Mistborn are those who have the ability to ‘burn’ metals, each of which is associated with a different ability (known as Allomancy). In total there are 16 metals that allomancers can burn: 8 basic and 8 higher metals. And on top of all that Allomancy is only one of the three metallic arts that these 16 metals can be used with. Most allomancers (which are rare to begin with) can only burn one type of metal, whereas ‘mistborn‘ (extremely rare) can burn them all. Complicated at first, but very cool :). See here for the metals and their abilities. As the plot develops we get to see another metallic art known as Feruchemy, which has become quite rare (due to breeding laws). This ability utilises the same metals as allomancy but instead of drawing power from the metal, the power is drawn from the person’s body. Every action must have an equal and opposite reaction, so to ‘use’ strength or sight stored away in a metal one must first ‘charge’ it by being weak or blind for a while. A great magic system to me is one that has a good degree of internal logical integrity with reference to real world scientific concepts, and it has been done very well here (no Harry Potter magic system shenanigans).
To describe this book in a nutshell, it’s more or less Oceans Eleven with magic, and instead of taking a load of cash from a casino, they’re trying to steal a load of rare metal, kill an oppressive Lord Ruler, and collapse the entire economy (at least that’s how it starts). As Kelsier (George Clooney) returns to Luthadel (LA) he meets a young (16) street thief by the name of Vin (Matt Damon), who ends up joining Kelsier’s crew as a spy to infiltrate the nobility. We later learn that our protagonist is also Mistborn and a fair amount of page time is spent with her, Kelsier, and the crew teaching her in the allomantic arts (a great storytelling device Mr Sanderson!) After this it is hard not to ruin the story, but if you want a dry synopsis there’s always wiki.
I’ll leave it there I think. It’s a great book, fairly easy reading, doesn’t get bogged down, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to getting The Well of Ascension. One thing I did note was the lack of bad language or sex in this book (a common theme for Sanderson I think), which in some senses detracts a little for me. Possibly this stems from Sanderson’s religious roots (have a read); there is also a fair amount of reference to the preservation of religions and its importance in The Final Empire. ANYWAY…
All-in-all, great stuff. 4.5/5.0
Update Dec 2016 – Books 2 & 3
It has been a few months since writing my first impression of book one, and I’ve now had the chance to chew my way through the next two books of the trilogy, so I’ve now gleaned the full picture of how it all fits together. I won’t dwell on the plot here since you either know it already or don’t want it to be spoiled! The series overall is a great exercise in world building (at which Sanderson is undeniably a master); the logical way in which it all fits together and all the story threads come together and tie-up is wonderfully neat and satisfying. The magic system is also one of the most inventive and internally logical systems ever created.
That said, I do a have a few qualms. These three books lack a little artistry for me and generally come across a little cold and sterile. And I do mean ‘a little’. Physical descriptions and expression of emotion/ideas are fairly transparent, which does make things easier when reading between the lines isn’t constantly required. I think this aspect of Sanderson’s storytelling has changed over time, which I’m judging by the writing style in The Stormlight Archive (The Way of Kings, The Words of Radiance…). This is a small niggle, but if you’re coming from books such as Name of the Wind, this may be the biggest difference you notice.
Another thing with Mistborn is that the characters tend to fall into one of two traditional categories: good or evil. There are a few exceptions to this *small spoiler*, Zane for instance. Traditional yes, but it doesn’t really detract from the storytelling or the believability of the story. We all know life is more complicated, and I’m not saying this makes the story is less enjoyable, perhaps just a little less believable. But then again, this is fantasy, who cares? Again, aspects of light and shade in the characters seem to be examined in greater depth in The Stormlight Archive. I’m very much looking forward to book three of that series!
Overall Mistborn is a fantastic story and staple in the fantasy genre. Now for book four…

League Night 3-31-18
Commanders:
3 Sram, Senior Edificer 2 Purphoros, God of the Forge 2 Nekusar, the Mindrazer 2 Arcanis the Omnipotent 2 Jenara, Asura of War 2 Meren of Clan Nel Toth 2 The Ur-Dragon 1 Maga, Traitor to Mortals 1 Gishath, Sun’s Avatar 1 The Locust God 1 Selvala, Heart of the Wilds 1 Baral, Chief of Compliance
Color Wheel:
29.17% Blue 18.75% Green 18.75% Black 16.67% White 16.67% Red
Pod 1 Game 1
Patrick - Purphoros, God of the Forge Dustin - Arcanis the Omnipotent Billy - Sram, Senior Edificer
I cursed Dustin’s deck enough to where he had to mull to 5 and had no counterspells and THEN I made sure I cursed Patrick’s deck enough to where he got a slow Purp and from there, Sram won on turn 5 with a PHAT Walking Ballista.
Pod 2 Game 1
Trent - Nekusar, the Mindrazer Baker - Selvala, Heart of the Wilds Mike - Jenara, Asura of War
Mike got out Living Plane and Humility because he’s EVIL, he is tweaking his deck still, but it has begun to show it’s power level that it’ll eventually reach. Trent actually pulled this game off due to some Enchantment that he played to deal damage to his opponents each turn on the draw. I don’t know the name, once he tells me again I can correct this.
Pod 3 Game 1
Jesse - The Ur-Dragon Kevin - The Locust God A A Ron - Meren of Clan Nel Toth
A picture is worth a thousands reeeeeees?
Pod 1 Game 2
Patrick - Purphoros, God of the Forge A A Ron - Meren of Clan Nel Toth Jesse - The Ur-Dragon
Soooooooooooooooo, A A Ron basically politic’d this WHOLE game. Seriously all I heard was, “KILL HIM, HIT HIM, ATTACK HIM! HE’S PURPHOROS!” Etc.
This wore on Jesse and he eventually did wear Patrick down, BUTTTTTTT not before they killed A A Ron first.
In the end, Patrick ran outta gas (Live fast, die hard Purp) and Jesse swung big fatties to clench the 1st place spot.
Pod 2 Game 2
Billy - Sram, Senior Edificer Trent - Nekusar, the Mindrazer Kevin - Gishath, Sun’s Avatar
This game was Kevin’s fault. I was putting Sram up but he was like, ‘go head and play it, I don’t care.”
So I did, and there was no disruption on Sram, so it went off on turn 4 and won.
Pod 2 Game 2
Baker - Baral, Chief of Compliance Dustin - Arcanis the Omnipotent Mike - Jenara, Asura of War
COUNTER WARSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I wish I hadn’t rolled three blue decks into a pod, because that was a long game for them.
Baker ended up winning with a different type of REEEEEEEEE. The undead kind that puts tapped Zombies into play for each instant and sorcery in the graveyard.
That card is awesome.
Steven got his games in after, with a LOVELY turn two Sram win (AFTER Sram was killed on turn 1) God hand much? And then Steven won his second game with Maga.
POINTS:
Steven - 10 Points Billy - 10 Points Jesse - 9 Points Baker - 9 Points Trent - 9 Points Patrick - 8 Points Kevin - 8 Points Dustin - 7 Points A A Ron - 7 Points Mike - 6 Points
OVERALL POINTS:
Dustin - 112 Points Billy - 104 Points (+1 for not missing a week) Kevin - 99 Points (+1 for not missing a week) Patrick - 91 Points Mr. Mike - 89 Points (+1 for not missing a week) Baker - 84 Points Steven - 78 Points Jonathan - 63 Points Trent - 71 Points Logan - 53 Points Tyler - 52 Points Thomas - 45 Points James - 44 Points Julian - 44 Points Tim - 36 Points Blake - 23 Points Philip - 22 Points Aaron - 22 Points Dominic - 22 Points Taylor - 20 Points Jesse - 18 Points Hunter - 18 Points Rachel - 10 Points Eryn - 9 Points (+5 for missed weekend clause)
AND............. Dustin pulled a big victory with a pretty large lead!
CONGRATS TO DUSTIN! On winning the beautiful (ick) Wormwood Treefolk card and trophy!
