Just rewatched "Turning red". I know, that majority of people say this is one of the weakest of Pixar, but this movie makes me cry every single time. It's just...I feel Mei so much. My relationship with my mother are just like that, even though I'm not even thirteen anymore. She feels such urge to control everything about me, to make sure our family is perfect in everyone's eyes, for me to be perfect and of course having no secrets from her. The only thing left for me back then were my friends, who have been with me since high school. They helped me a lot to see there's something wrong with mom's control and helped me realize I'm enough as I am and there are people who love me regardless. It's them.
A week ago I told my mom, that I was expelled from the university. Of course she was mad. I tried to tell her that I was too afraid to tell her about my problems with my studies, because all I would get is "you're embarrassing me", and that telling such truth in our family is just too terrifying . She said "Well, you have no family from now on". But she's wrong. I have a family. It's my besties. It's my friends from far-off cities. It's my girlfriend. It's people who support me and love me and tell me that I can always try again, because making mistakes is okay as long as I learn from them.
Sorry for non-rdr content, tough two weeks. But I want to thank you all for your support!! I never expected people who know me only for my silly little rdr sketches to support me so much, I...thank you all💖💗💖💗 I will never forget your kindness. Once I start working, I'll shower you with sketches muahaha✨️✨️✨️

Generational Trauma and Disney’s Newest Movie Trend
Tumblr media
Disney’s animated catalog has been through many a trend, from the bombastic, painfully obvious (and very queer-coded) villains of the Disney classics and Renaissance, to the twist villains of both Pixar and Disney cartoons of 2010. Lately though, the trend for Disney villains seem to be no Disney villains, with the central conflict being good ole generational trauma.
While it’s not that this was Disney’s, or even any other studio’s, first gripe at the generational trauma angle, Brave, Encanto, Moana, Turning Red, Strange World, Frozen 2, and even Coco set themselves apart from similar movies by encapsulating this struggle in a more intangible, yet relatable way.
Tumblr media
Where did this come from?
Tumblr media
From what we could gather from recent Disney history, Brave seems to be the earliest Disney movie of the 2010s to 2020s to feature the generational trauma conflict. The idea of being a perfect princess Eleanor had of her daughter Merida was the driving conflict. And granted, the storyline in this one did indeed have, and need, a tangible villain but nevertheless, the main driving conflict is mostly generational trauma in the plot. This worked well with the feminist approach to the storyline, wherein neither generations were particularly in the wrong, but simply wanting such radically different things (Merida wants her freedom pursuing feministic independence while her mom wants success for her, pushing her to a traditional role she wants nothing to do with) that, once both sides were able to communicate and “mended the bond torn by pride” the shift is obvious, the 2 generations are brought closer and the generational trauma becomes healed.
Tumblr media
Moving on, the year 2016 gives us Moana, where a similar parent and child duo faced a similar conflict. Between Chief Tui’s (very familiar) desire for his daughter to be more complacent and traditional and safe, and Moana’s genuine desire to explore and travel, it safe to say that many were expecting that a similar plot to Brave would have happened. It then came as a surprise then, when the story does not explore the plotline any further until the end, where Tui seemingly starts supporting his daughter after she sufficiently showcases her ability to be able to do as she pleases with the safety that he wants for her. Another generational rift healed on Disney’s catalog.
Tumblr media
Coco comes a year later, giving us the conflict between Abuelita’s traditional views (upholding the family’s elimination of music) and Miguel’s love for music. The conflict is then expanded as the story progresses, by Imelda’s non acceptance of both Miguel and Hector’s passion. The full story of Hector’s “desertion” becomes revealed, sealing the rift between the dead relative, while the truth coming from both Coco and Miguel help heal the gap between the living. The generational trauma of abandonment is healed once more.
Tumblr media
Fast forward to 2019 and the 2020s and we get Frozen 2, Encanto, Turning Red, Strange World. The overall tone of the movies in terms of how they handled generational trauma. Frozen 2 gave a glimpse of an angle of if newer generations had to reconcile the evils of their ancestors, and do better than they did. Encanto, Turning Red, and Strange World all  gave a story where trauma festered and manifested in one’s treatment of family. They all showed that intergenerational trauma, not only manifests in between different generations but also within them, with dysfunctionality turning genuine moments into potentially toxic ones in the minds of children exposed to unresolved trauma from the adult figures of their lives.
Tumblr media
So where does that leave us?
Tumblr media
The generational trauma was the villain all along seems to be one trope that’s gonna be staying for quite a while. Many think that it’s overstayed its welcome, while others can’t wait for more. Its magic is in its relatability and the fact that it has paved the way for many to start dialogue and conversation on toxicity within their families, and I think for that, it’s well worth seeing more of. But then this begs the question, “Is generational trauma truly the Disney trend that hits the bullseye of our hearts?”

The Owl House: Enchanting Grom Fright: Happy Valentine’s Gays
Tumblr media
Happy Valentine’s Day owl ladies, gentleman and non-binary folks! It’s time to finish off this holiday in proper style with a LONG overdue review of enchanting Grom Fright and even longer overdue coverage of the Owl House.  The Owl House was one of the best debuts of last year if not THE best, only in contention because Close Enough also started last year and looks to surpass regular show in terms of quality. But with stunning animation, tons of representation, and colossal worldbuilding. And given how i’m on record for thinking Star Vs went so far down the tubes they bumped into where Cthulu is sleeping, it’s nice to have another magic based show that seems to be on the right track: carefully building i’ts world, supporting cast and for today’s topic main romance. It also rather than just obliquely hint one character was bi and the other pan, actually goes out of it’s way to have a bisexual protaginst with a gay love intrest. As my good friend @jess-the-vampire has brought up quite a bit, star had plnety of options. .but no willingness to actually campaign for any queer rep, the way Gravity Falls head Alex Hirsch tried to, he still gets credit for trying, and Owl House creator Dana Terrace gets full credit for.
Terrace got her start working on Gravity Falls in line production before working her way up to directing for ducktales, being instrumental in how Webby was animated and how she moves and acts, and being the director for several classic season one episodes including “Woo-Hoo!”, “The Spear of Selene” , “Day of the Only Child!” which was one of my faviorites from season 1 and “The Beagle Birthday Massacre!”. And while I can’t 100% confirm she’s the only part responsible for starting Weblena, given she was director on an episode where a lot of the romantic subtext was in the visuals, she certainly helped so thank you Dana. Thank you a lot. Their adorable. Point is she’s a talented lady and wasn’t satisfied with directing, so she pitched her own show, combining tons of ides and stuff including of all things, Pokemon Red. I checked the article wikipedia had sourced, it was one of her happy childhood memories as it was one of the last things her dad gave her. Awwwwwww. That’s as sweet as it is painful. She’s also currently dating Alex Hirsch, something I was entirely unaware of but find also adorable. Point is i’m glad I looked into her as she’s a very nice person, and very much my kind of weirdo and i’m happy for her sucess and her singuarly weird show that sprung from that sucess.
Now that part of it’s out of the way the episode itself was an uphill battle as you’d expect. As anyone familiar with this blog is aware, but just in case your new, you tend to hear me bitching about Disney’s handling of queer represntation a LOT
Tumblr media
For the most part Disney’s pretty bad at it: There was the string of “FIRST GAY CHARACTER IN AN X” they had going for a while.. that consisted of a character I dind’t realize was gay, a kiss I didn’t see, and a talk with a character who I honestly wouldn’t of been looking for had disney not patted themselves on the back with some giant sized hands because htey saved some pym particles for that occasion. Ducktales was unable to have Penumbra come out as gay more clearly because I don’t know Ducks can’t be day.. but they can be IMPLIED to be gay or pansexual as hard as the crew possibly can so they win anyway. Pixar was able to have a gay lead character for one of it’s sparks shorts out and even focused on him coming out of the closet and it’s very good and something I WILL give Pixar credit for... but not Disney Plus who go out of their way to not mention the lead being gay.. despite the fact the short opens with a gay space cat riding a gay space dog out of a rainbow and then it being revaled our lead is in a relationship not long into the short. My point is the idiots who won’t watch this for having gay characters are just going to turn it off, who cares what they think, why are you like this Disney. They need to do better, and be better and i’m getting tired of this shit.
That being said... this episode is a step in the right directoin as despite having to get past one obstructive asshole, not her words but damn if it isn’t the truth, as the rest of hte execs were fine with having a gay character, Terrace fought hard for it and WON, having a clearly gay character, and a clear road to a gay romace as the lead one, all because she wanted some representation in her works. So to honor this, I present this review in honor of love, effort and saying screw you to not having represntation because money. Join me under the cut and allt hat.
Tumblr media
We open in the owl house, in the owl house, duck dodge push and shove, it’s how we show our love in the.. you get the point. Luz is learning yet another Rune, this time plant runes.. and already something I love about the series pops up: the fact Luz’s rise in skill is gradual but noticable. Each spell noticably improves in potency with time,  going from simple lights to shaping them into simple constructs, and learning to control or time her spells and glpyhs so they launch she she says so, with each one getting more powerful the more she learns. And on top of that osmething I just noticed on rewatch of this episode is her tecnique in finding them evolved, something I dind’t notice the first time because I hadn’t fully caught up and checked this one out to see if Disney would actually let them go through with it.. and they did. Point is her first spell is found by accident, her second by realizing how her magic works fundemntally, both require skilled deduction and on the fly thinking and casting, so she’s already pretty skilled.. but now sh’es ACTIVELY seeking out a new spell here for the first time. She knows how she gets them, she knows each school is tied to a form, and she likely got the plant from williow since that’s her thing and she’s a saint. A demon but also a saint. They can have those too. It’s what I assume relicor is.
Tumblr media
I miss that goblin demon bat man. Point is it shows an evolution in Luz’s thinking: while it’s a subtle thing she took a more proactive approach this time even if it took a lot of practice.. and it pay soff as by the time of her next rune, while it’s once again sorta handed to her she has less time to learn it, almost none, and finds it singed onto a ball.. and learns it effortlessly to the point where by the next episode it’s a crucial plot point. IT’s subtle but clever character progression, and stuff I really enjoy, showing our hero going from a bit inept but not helpless or incomptient.. to a force to be reckconed with and far more clever and strategic than yo’ud expect given her sometimes reckless and almost always happy go lucky attitude.
Tumblr media
Luz worries teaching King about the internet was a bad idea because he gets excited about a literal cat fight which .. yeah... it was a bad idea but not because of that.. but because next he finds someone saying the earth is flat and she wisely yanks it away. It’s.. very sad that the absolutley maddening and easily debunked flat earth theory is still RELATIVLEY more sane than the stuff we’ve had pop up during the trump era and the cornoavirus pandemic.
But one of the main conlficts of the episode pops up as Luz’s mom messages her and Luz can’t bring herself to tell her anything and just sends a thumbs up.  I do think this episode helps even things from the pilot a bit as it was a bit lopsided: While I got that Camillia was genuinely struggling with how to deal with Luz, and was offered an out and had to take it... the fact she sees NO problem with the normalcy camp, which comes off intentioanlly or not a sa parallel to conversion camps or camps to make autistic kids “Normal”. And as someone whose both bisexual and autistic, I naturally relate to luz way more as someone whose intrests sometimes just don’t quite fit with everyone else, and who dosen’t get how bad some of their actions were.  THat’s why this episode feels like a necessary course correction: Luz is shown to genuinely love her mama and feel guilty.. but we see camilia genuinlely loves and supports her daughter a bit more. While it was clear from the pilot this shows it more, with her genuinely just wanting to know her daughter’s okay and checking up on her, and giving me the feeling that possible consequences or no if something bad WAS happening or she didn’t hear from her for a long time, she would’ve drove up there to get her. It feels like the writers realized the implications they accidently created and wanted to fix it, though I can’t say for certain. But if so good on you for course correcting, not every show does that.
But King encourages her, telling her she’s doing the right thing by lying and to “trust the demon on your shoulder”. Keep this in mind for later, but that joke is great on it’s own. But soon i’ts time for school and Hooty.. barfs out Luz’s books for her.
Tumblr media
I haven’t been this disturbed since.. (Looks at the clock) About 2 maybe three hours ago when I watched a man have, if apparently shorter than the oriiginal cut as I wanted to see everyone else’s reactions dammit, sex with hiis car which was possesed by the mad ghost of his dead wife. Because that’s the kind of stuff i’m into when i’m not reviewing stuff. And before that Tinky.. just everything about tinky.
Tumblr media
I do not have enough time to get into TInky here or why he exestially horrifies me. Or why Jeff blim is a living god. I will save that for a proper review if I have the time tomorrow. Point is I saw a lot today and that still tops it. Willow and Gus are likewise grossed out and want to leave.
Cut to school where Luz wonders what’s with all the decorations.. that remind me of this honestly
Tumblr media
And frankly given the whole state of the boiling isles it REALLY wouldn’t surprise me if the decorations were indeed well cooked faces. But i’ts Grom time, which means elaborate gromposals (Some Dude asks Skara out with a beating heart and an elaborate medical proposal.. which.. points for effort. And for using an actual heart. Couldn’t get one for mine. ), dancing and someone being chosen for Grom Queen. WHich Willow hints isn’t as nice as that sounds. Before we can get into that though Amity bumps into them and gets into a tizzy before meekly greeting “Luz.. and Co”. which.. not going to lie.. is my faviorite gag of the season. Just htw way she adds them and just the way Willow and Guz both smile widely at it as if to say “That’s us!”. Amity drops a note and snatches it back. This will be important later, you all know why, point is Amity becomes Grom Queen.. and is heavily depressed with Luz following her to find out why.  At the gym.. she does indeed ifnd out why: Turns out Grom is not some mutation of an earthname but is based around a horrifying entity lurking beneath the isles, Gromethious the Fear Bringer, who emerges from his slumber once a year and must be fought back and brings out his target’s greatest fears. Just like groundhog day only with less time loops and rodent abuse. Amity is scared of hers, and i’ll obviously get into this more later, and Luz simply suggests asking bump to opt out and Amity appricates the support. Awwww.
Luz heads home and we find out Eda is chaperoning and King is mcing. Eda is also rocking a suit. Just damn girl, damn. But Luz considers taking her place.. and gets laughed at, with Eda assuming she’ll have to save her and King just being kind of a dick. I mean he’s a loveable thoroughly cuddly dick but he’s still a dick... just more like a stuffed plushie of one.  So basically exactly like Tinky. Look I mention him more than once in this review he dosen’t put me in the bastard box. It’s a great system.  Naturally this makes Luz more determined than ever to prove herself and she finds Amity in the night, with Amity having been unable to get out of it.. and Bumps a resonable guy, he just wants a substitute and no one wants the job.. except Luz who galdly volunteers and insists ntohing scares her before the giant spider on the back of her head proves otherwise. Because of course it does, spiders are fucking terrifying. Kill then all.. except the pokemon ones. Galvaltula are sweethearts. As are Ariadoses. Sweethearts who can elctorcute or poison you but still.
So the next way Luz begins preparing.. and by that I mean it’s time for training. Sadly we don’t get an episode of Luz and Amity getting trapped in an 80′s fashion montage... I mean yes Rise of the TMNT also did that plot the same year, but we had two diffrent plots about someone getting trapped in an eldtrich sitcom and a THIRD this year, all entertaingly unique. Though we do get Luz pulling out an otter suit that’s adorable and she sadly still hasn’t worn yet. “This one says i’m an otter, with a dark side”. She also got thrown out of a school dance for.. wearing an otter suit. Okay the other things we saw in the pilot were understandable but htis is just.. baffling. Who cares what you wear to a dance as long as it isn’t horribly racist of nothing at all.
Tumblr media
Damn you flanders and your glorious ass. Point is Amity shows up and threatens hooty’s life because.. he’s hooty. The fact he isn’t dead already is a testiment to how badass he is and how much money he’d cost Eda to replace. Owl Tubes don’t come out of a stygian hole in the unvierse every day you know. That’s only every three years. It’s basic styigan owl tube science.
But Amity wants her to be ready and that she’ll have to face her greatest fear.. and cue hooty popping up, poking amity in the face and asking if she wants to know her greatest fear. Really he can clearly hear everything in the house given he heard that, so he heard the death threat he just chose to ignore it. That.. was a mistake. And by mistake I mean we get a hilarious cut to the outside of the house as Luz tries to stop her love intrest from murdering her second mom’s tube monster. The result is some bandages and an eyepatch. To be fair that last one was just flaring up from a  previous beating.
Tumblr media
For this solem task of training, Amity has brought in her local disaster bisexuals.. aka her twin siblgins Eldric and Elmyra, whose greatest fears are dying alone and being stuck with Eldric. Both understandable. They conjur luz’s greatest fears which are.. some of the funniest shit I heard all year.. and also very relatable. Human souls in cat bodies, which is genuinely terrifying good job Luz, Jerks on the internet who mansplain things, relatable, and soy milk.
Tumblr media
But Amity knows this is just the openign act. it needs to be something deeper.. so while Luz dosen’t realize it’s probably her mom issues she brings up her issues with her other mom: that Eda dosen’t think she can do this. Hence we get a giant eda putting Luz in a babychair. Before we can unpack how wrong that sentence sounded, Eda comes out, and marvels at how hot giant her is. But she’s quickly distracted from sex with a giant version of herself, which is not an easy feat, by the relization “Wait Luz is going to fight grom isn’t she.. fuck i’m going to have to save her”, though Luz holds firm on doing it to prove she’s fine and dosen’t need to be saved constantly. it’s a good conflict. Eda IS right that Luz is not ready for this alone, that she’s overcompensating and that Eda would, in normal circumstances be the one to rescue her. As we’ll see it’s not her who does it but still, were this any other foe she probably would be. But Luz’s motivations are equally understandable: She wants to help her friend not have to do this and she wants to prove she can do it. She just wants her mentor, the only person in her life up to meeting her that GNEUINELY supported her in magic to respect her. To have faith in her and actually see how far she’s come. And given how her own mother writes off her dreams, if not unrealistically, and before this she had no friends or support system to speak of outside her mom, it’s easy to see why this is so improtant to Luz: she just wants to make the one person in her life whose ever support her actually think it was worth it when in truth Eda already thinks it does and just dosen’t want her to die.
She’s just not good with talking to her or not condescending to her as her own ego is stacked sky high, probably because the whole curse thing meant Eda was an outcast by default and the system wants to either chain her to one form of magic and one only or shackle her to them as a hired goon. Her ego, while justified, is also a defense mechanism: a way to shield herself from the fact almost no one cares about her and one of the few people who DOES, dosen’t care what she wants or needs. Once the curse happened she lost just about everything and had to rebuild and thus build up walls around herself and kept everyone else at arms length till Luz changed her for the better. It’s just a tragic clash of two wills both with similar problems but both unwilling to talk about them.
But with time up, our heroes need to get to the diggity dance. So they indeed do and we get some fun sight gags, Willow makes corsages,  that one girl with the cresent head somehow ended up with Mathomule and is not happy, as anyone who ends up with him should. And it’s time for Luz to face her destiny.. in a tux with a tutu because of course, and Amity likes it because also of course.
IT’s time to rumble, with King getting nervous due to eda’s prodding about mcing since his co-mc gus is really good at it, and introducing our champion.
Tumblr media
No wait sorry he’s still trapped in Mojoworld. no it’s still Luz who shows off a seasons worth of skill by easily dispatching the first few fears and saying to grom let’s finish it.. before grom puts a tentacle on her head.
Tumblr media
It’s to downlaod her fear.. which is Camillia. Granted we could all see it coming but still Luz obviously can’t fight her own mother or her own overwhelming guilt.. her mom did hurt her.. but she gets why and just loves her and wants her to be proud but dosen’t know what to do: tell her the trutha nd possibly loose a happy and fufilling life or wait until it all blows up. It’s a painful choice. So luz and king end up running. King runs first because he can’t handle it and Gus talks him back into the groove while Luz runs away because she can’t fight her own mom, understandable, and Gus encourages king to lead the crowd which he does. Amity and Eda follow Luz.
So Luz is backed down, facing down a monster tha’ts going to go on to everyone else next if she fails... and Eda prepares to interfere.. but it’s AMITY who faces her fear and dives in. And we find out just what her fear was as grom turns into a humanoid shape and rips the letter in half.. it was a grom invitation. Though conviently the who it’s adressed to was ripped out.
And yeah not going to save this one: It’s Luz. You know it I know it I didn’t even hide it in the intro. Even before the reveal in a bit it was obvious. But it also makes perfect sense. I’ve avoided talking about her character arc up to this point because I was waiting for now. Amity’s growth is the third major arc of the season behind Luz’s slow learning of magic and eventually induction into hexside and eda’s curse, which I lump in with Lilith chasing her since both were mildly entertwined and then entirely are once the reveal hits in the finale. When we meet her she’s an outright bully.. but we slowly see there’s more there. That she’s not really HAPPY or content, is contstantly under pressure by her family name, is outright bullied by her own siblings who don’t understand her. So Luz coming in, seemingly only being intrested in magic because i’ts neat.. understandably bothers her. She’s not a great person, bullying her old best friend because tha’ts what’s expected and being close with outright bullies because of that.. but it’s through Luz she starts to grow, realizing Luz is genuinely nice and genuinely sorry for any trouble she caused Amity, and evne then both cases were causaed by Amity’s own dickishness and outside forces, so it’s easy to see why she defrosts faster. Her siblings realize they’ve genuinely hurt her, and actually try to be good siblings from then on and help her, and slowly Amity learns to truth luz, trust in her, and accept her... and thus accept her feelings for her. There are gradual hints she’s growing attracted to her.. but her walls had to come down first, and it wouldn’t of worked from the outset. The show cleverly has the two build a genuine friendship, two opposities who work well together, so when feelings do happen it feels natural. It’s not “I’m in love with this person because I have to because you can’t be friends with someone your attracted to” bullshit or anything like that, cough star vs cough, it’s just well built catching feelings. I’ts how this kind of thing SHOULD go: niether went in intending for this to happen.. it’s just happening.
And Amity’s reluctance is painfully understandable, as Luz is the ONLY friend and support she has. Sure she and willow are patching things up, but WIllow would understandably choose luz over her and she’s terrified of loosing the one good thing in her life. Of course Luz would either say yes, and probably will some day, or let her down gently, she’s nice.. but it’s also understandable to be afraid that someone won’t take the reveal well. I’ve been there trust me, it’s easier when you let it out even if you get rejected, but I get it being hard to let out because you don’t want to loose a friend. I did not, and niether would she, but I can see why she wouldn’t want ot take the plunge. At least not yet. We’ll see this summer hopefully.
But we do get a shiptastic, gorgeously aniamted scene of the two dancing an fightin gin perfect synch, combinging luz’s new use of plant magic with amity’s mastery of abominations resulting in the two utterly decimating grom, likely in part because with two fast moving targets he can’t get a lock on and likely nees more fear and mass to attack multiple targets at once. Or just more tendrils. it’s a quick, beautful sequence that’s utterly glorious, being framed as romantic as any hetero scene of the type and rightfully so. A triumph and well deserving of this praise.
Our heros have won, get crowns, and King gets praise. All is well.. except Luz drops the crown once she gets home because she feels like she failed and feels lost about her mom.. though at least king gets it “I’m king and queen, best of both things!”. You tell em sister.
So we end with Luz genuinely responding to her mom, with some montage stuff as we see Gus and Willow poke a fear blob, willow fears bugs, understandable and Gus fears clowns...
Tumblr media
Also understandable. Though I didn’t put up a bug picture because
Tumblr media
And Amity looks out folornly into the night. Camilla responds to Luz.. and mentions letters.. which while Luz brushes those off.. we see someone sent them. And by someone I probably mean king since we now know only eda and him had acess to the portal, and given he was actively encouraging her to lie.. yeah i’m supscious. But we’ll see next season. For now this episode is fan fucking tastic, showing off tons of character development, being representative and sweet as all hell.. and being really funny. Tons of great gags in this one including the turtle guy from an earlier episode being forced to be adisco ball.  This is easily the series best so far and if you haven’t checked it out, please do it’s fantastic as is this show. Check both out. Until the next rainbow i’ts been a pleasure. Tommorow more disney shenanigans this time with pete. And also more of this possibly we’ll see what I get done.

Writing, Planting Seeds, and Pixar’s “Soul”
Here is an analysis of Soul that no one asked for. (In fact, I watched it with my parents, and my dad explicitly told me not to start breaking it down until at least after the credits rolled.)
Anyway.
This essay is about planting seeds, creating expectations, and how Soul failed to do that whereas Inside Out succeeded.
Spoilers ahead for both movies.
Disclaimer: stories are a subjective experience. Please don’t take this essay to mean that I think I have the only correct interpretation of either movie; these are simply my personal thoughts.
When I sat down to watch Pixar’s Soul, I was incredibly excited. As the movie progressed, I continued to be excited. But by the end, I was so, so disappointed. Why?
I had high hopes for Soul. After all, Inside Out is one of my all-time favorite films. I couldn’t wait to see how Pixar tackled the concept of souls—a supernatural idea that is, at the same time, deeply personal and human. I started watching, both enjoying and analyzing each scene. See, part of being a writer for me means being unable to turn off the analytical part of my brain even when I’m the reader or the audience member. I’m constantly trying to figure out where the story’s going to go and what message the story’s trying to send.
As the movie progressed, I noticed Soul planting seeds. Here are the two main seeds I noticed:
Mentorship is important. Joe Gardner starts off as a high school (I think?) music teacher. He desperately wants to impart on these kids his own love of music—just as his dad did for him. <3 But there’s only one girl who seems to have innate interest and talent, although she pretends otherwise. He’s disillusioned. (Even here, though, we see mentorship paying off, since a former student is the one who gives him his chance at a big break.) But then, in the Great Before, he’s given the role of mentor yet again, this time with 22 who, like Joe’s student, is too bitter to really find joy in music…or anything.
Community is important. As 22 develops as a character, we see her acting almost like a therapist with the people she meets. (In fact, my mom, a psychologist, immediately perked up and wondered whether 22’s “spark” would be in therapy or psychology.) 22 zeroes in on all the things Joe missed because he was too distracted with his passion/obsession of music. 22 even helps Joe repair his relationship with his mom. 22 also inspires the girl when she wanted to quit music—thereby cementing the connection between mentorship and community.
Based on these, here was what I thought would happen by the end of the movie: Joe would realize that pouring his life into music to the exclusion of other people was a waste. He would go back to his classroom to discover his passion in instilling passion in others. He would invest himself in the next generation. We’d also get at least one scene showing him reconnecting with friends whom he’d neglected in pursuit of his music, and deepening his relationship with his mom. He’d get some payoffs from this, like he did with his former student, but his motivation wouldn’t be his own self-interest: his motivation would generally be helping others. 22 would reach a similar conclusion, albeit through a different path. Rather than becoming a teacher, she’d become a therapist. We’d see her using the skills she started cultivating in Joe’s body now as herself, pulling people out of their shells and helping them discover truths about themselves, inspiring them to become better people even as she inspires herself.
That’s what I thought would happen. Obviously, that’s not where the story went.
Right when 22 gets her earth pass, the movie informed us that a person’s “spark” is not their purpose at all. Rather, it’s the moment that they are “ready” for earth. I quickly changed my hypothesis: the movie’s actual message was that some of us need to be ready for life, and others need to be ready for death. (What a powerful message for a world struck by a pandemic. At least in the US, we spend most of our time avoiding thoughts of death at all costs, and I think most of us were completely unprepared to be confronted with it as we have been recently.) And the movie had already planted some seeds: after all, Joe has spent the whole movie so far cheating death. The movie hadn’t necessarily taken a stance on whether that was a good or bad choice on his part, but still. The movie seemed to support this new hypothesis, showing Joe calmly finding his place on the creepy treadmill-into-the-zapping-light while 22 flies to earth.
But no! One of the deus-ex-celestial-beings shows up and offers Joe a second chance on earth. So clearly being “ready” for death wasn’t important.
Joe ends up back on earth, and we see what the movie is really trying to tell us: that the point of human existence is to…enjoy things. Falling leaves and seed pods, the water on your toes at the beach, pizza, etc. Oh, and relationships—a few relational thoughts appear in the montage. But they’re outnumbered by sensory and experiential ideas. Life, it seems, is not about investing in others, but about enjoying things that are pleasant.
(Which raises some serious questions for me. Like, that’s fine if you live a privileged life where things really are predominately pleasant…but what do you do if you live in an objectively ugly part of the world where objectively ugly things are happening? I work with survivors of serious abuse—yes, they can find joy in ugly things, but part of their healing involves recognizing that most parts of their world are not, at this moment, beautiful at all. But I digress.)
Also note that the antagonist was not connected to any of the themes of the movie. He was not connected to investing in others, nor was he connected to enjoying life. He was not even defeated by either of our protagonists, but rather by another of the deus-ex-celestial-beings. Whatever the story’s overall message was, the antagonist should’ve been a reflection of it or foil for it. But he wasn’t.
To me, Soul was misleading. It planted multiple seeds of what I could expect to come of it, and it failed to bring any of those seeds to fruition.
As a writer, I try to be aware of this. Every detail I include in a story is creating expectations in the minds of my readers. The more I emphasize those details, the more weight the connected expectations will have. Once I’ve created these expectations, I need to fulfill them. Or if I want readers to have different expectations, I need to slowly, gently, and naturally (by which I mean, naturally within the story) create the new expectations. I can only fulfill these new expectations after I have disentangled the story from the previous expectations.
A brilliant example is Inside Out. Initially, the audience is primed to expect that the resolution to the story will come when Riley is made happy again. But almost from the beginning, Inside Out subtly plants seeds to change our expectations—even if we’re not consciously aware that it’s happening. Inside Out demonstrates, again and again (such as with Bing Bong) that sadness needs to be felt. Our new expectation eventually is that sadness will be felt, and that sadness being felt will bring healing. That is why, when Riley returns home and breaks down in tears with her parents, who then embrace her, we don’t feel cheated—we feel satisfied.
The fact that Pixar did this so spectacularly with Inside Out makes me more disappointed with Soul, but also optimistic that Pixar can do it better again. In the meantime, I’m off to re-examine some of my own stories and see what seeds I’ve planted.

three questions on tdp
Thoughts on the new Dragon Prince season 3 trailer? If you've seen it? Seems like it's becoming a lot more mature and less childish.
It’s hard to tell from trailers, and frankly, I’m not even sure what the trailer is telling us to expect (other than new faces, complications, revelations, and hopefully some resolutions).
I would expect, at minimum, that it’ll retain some elements of childish humor. Getting darker, though? Dunno, since S1 and S2 weren’t exactly nonstop barrels of lightness and fun. There’s Harrow’s death, Runaan’s imprisonment, some pretty brutal consequences for attacking a dragon...
“Childish” and “dark” can coexist. They certainly do in the imaginations of actual children. The problem isn’t whether a story has wrong choices that lead to horrible results; the problem is when storytellers are afraid to let the characters suffer those consequences and find resolution.
Are you up to date on what's been going on at Wonderstorm and everything? Do you have any thoughts to share on what we should do and what we can expect?
and
Do you have any thoughts on the recent TDP scandal?
For starters: expect nothing.
And yeah, I’ve got thoughts: wow, the sun rose and set yet again today.
Which is to say: what you are hearing is normal for every male-dominated industry -- especially male-majority and male-run teams in male-dominated industries. Women get talked over, dismissed, paid little and respected even less. Most often, they have one of two choices: if they’re young and attractive, they’re the team eyecandy; if they’re older and/or less attractive, they’re the team Mom. Neither pays well.
It has nothing to do with whether a man is woke, broke, bespoke, or some other variation. I wish I could tell you that one guy who’s a good writer with some big visions and is also a disability and diversity ally is automatically also going to a solid ally for queer people and women -- but I can’t. A man can be totally self-aware in one area and in everything else... he’s still a guy.
Bluntly, the bar for men (especially straight white men) is so damn low it’s six feet under. The world gives so many goddamn cookies to men who pay even the tiniest lip service to any non-default view, that men often figure that one little bit is good enough, no need to do more. After all, the world is designed entirely to coddle their every insecurity, to make it so they don’t have to face what they get away with by virtue of having a dick.
Frankly, if you want surprise from me, then show me a white (or passing-white) and straight male employer who does treat the women on his team like actual human beings, who does aim for equal voice time, who does pay them fairly and actively rejects any slotting into team eyecandy or team mom. Then I’ll be suitably shocked.
Otherwise, the blunt truth is that I assume the status quo applies. In my experience, if you think the status quo doesn’t apply, it’s only because you’re not paying attention.
Animation (and entertainment overall) has not been a shining light when it comes to a safe, nontoxic, viable working environment for women -- just google “Pixar sexual harassment”. Oh, sure, plenty of men will say they support this or that non-default, but few actually do something about it. I have to see action to believe it. Even then, I’m always waiting for the other shoe to drop -- and it most often comes in the form of a man who’s upset that his tiny actions for one non-default don’t somehow render harmless all his other negative actions (including inaction).
If you want that to change: it’s gonna take men.
It can start small, like the guy challenged to track male-female speech in team meetings. With the cold proof that the men on his team were constantly interrupting and talking over the women, he started breaking in. “Hold on, let her finish,” or “stop, she was talking, you’ll get your turn.” I even saw him once repeat (verbatim!) what a woman had said, and was visibly annoyed that the men on the team suddenly thought it was a good idea -- and to his credit, he promptly reminded them it wasn’t his idea, he was repeating what she’d said.
People have to model this stuff. Changing toxic environments like the one we’re hearing about at Wonderstorm is gonna require men do their part. When we have privilege by some axis, that means we’re often given the megaphone. Look around and see who lacks that privilege, hand them the megaphone, and be ready to defend their right to speak.
That last is an important step, because otherwise someone will take it away. You let that happen, all you did was an empty gesture. And when others don’t listen, then you repeat the person’s words, louder for those in the back (and give credit!).
In both literal and figurative senses, we’ve got to start handing our default-granted megaphone over to historically-silenced voices, repeatedly and consistently, until the rest of our privileged peers catch on: this is how we’re doing things, here, from now on.
Yeah, it sucks that yet another company/team/group is riddled with the usual sexism and misogyny. In the days and weeks to come, if I have any expectations, it’ll be that we’ll get another round of thinkpieces and tell-alls that show just how deep the rotten rabbit hole goes. Thing is, that’s just putting all the work on the shoulders of the people who’ve been putting up with this shit for long enough already.
It can change, but it won’t, not until the men working at Wonderstorm -- and anywhere else in that industry, or any other -- wise up and stop standing by and doing nothing. After all, the standard you walk past is the standard you accept, and clearly, in general, men in animation have chosen to accept a pretty reprehensible standard.

Fans think Justin Bieber’s Mom Pattie SHADED him on Twitter, plus did she just hint that she DISAPPROVES of his engagement to Hailey?!
Theories that Justin and his mom have had some kind of fallout are running amok thanks to Pattie’s social media activity.
When Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin announced their engagement to the world, it seemed like everyone in their lives was happy for them — from Justin’s dad, to Hailey’s aunt, Kim Basinger, everything we’ve seen and heard is that Justin and Hailey have the full support of their family and friends behind their decision. But there is one person close to Justin who hasn’t yet publicly vocalized her happiness for the couple: His mom, Pattie Mallette.
Not only did Pattie NOT publicly comment on her son’s engagement news, fans have been following her every move on social media lately, and some think that her recent activity points to a rift between her and Justin.
Shortly after the engagement news broke, Pattie changed her long-time twitter bio, which used to say “yes Justin Bieber is my son”. Fans pointed out that her new bio doesn’t make any mention of Justin at all, and others commented on the timing of the change, noting that it just seems too coincidental that she would take away Justin’s name from her bio during such a special time in his life.
One fan tweeted QUOTE, “Pattie removed her “Yes. Justin Bieber is my son” bio. She doesn’t even claim him anymore lmaooooooo”, while another tweeted QUOTE, “It hurts me a lot that Pattie doesn’t claim Justin anymore😣💔But it hurts me still more that Justin doesn’t mind losing important people just to fulfill an absurd caprice.”
Okay but before we all jump on the “Pattie doesn’t claim Justin as her son anymore” bandwagon, there are a ton of reasons why Pattie may have changed her bio. One being that after the engagement news broke, she was probably harassed by his fans on Twitter, and took down the bio in an effort to slow down all the messages she received. Another being that perhaps she decided now is the time to separate her identity from her son on social media. Our point is — not all conclusions lead to Pattie disowning Justin.
Of course, many fans DO believe Pattie was shading Justin with the twitter bio move, and some also think the reason behind the shade is because she disapproves of his engagement to Hailey. Fans who believe that theory have pointed to a recent tweet she liked as evidence.
Former Bachelor contestant Sean Lowe recently tweeted QUOTE, “Before proposing to a woman they’ve only known for a few weeks, I think the final guys on The Bachelorette should come help me scrub my kid’s diarrhea out of my living room rug just to make sure they’re serious about the whole ‘I want a family with you’ thing.” Justin’s mom LIKED the tweet, which prompted some fans to speculate that this was her way of hinting that she is NOT happy about Justin and Hailey rushing into marriage after recently getting back together.
One fan tweeted QUOTE, “pattie really liked this tweet. SHES DEFINITELY SO MAD AT JUSTIN. ohh my god. smh @ him, won’t even listen to the woman that raised him. if pattie’s woke, half of this fandom should too…” while another commented QUOTE, “I’m pretty sure this isn’t any shade towards Justin and Hailey. Pattie is a huge fan of the bachelorette show and has been for many years.”
We’re leaning towards agreeing with that last fan’s comment. It’s completely plausible that Pattie simply liked the Tweet because she’s a longtime Bachelor fan, and it’s just a funny and truthful message. So let’s not all rush to call out Pattie for having any beef with her son — at least until she publicly comments on how she REALLY feels about Justin and his engagement, herself. And not with some cryptic social media activity, but with like, actual words.
Alright now I wanna turn this over to you guys — do you think Pattie is shading Justin and hinting that she doesn’t approve of his engagement, or do you think fans are reading way too much into Pattie’s Twitter activity? Sound off with all your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!

39 of the best celebrity responses to Keaton Jones’ powerful video about bullying.
Last week, a Tennessee woman named Kimberly Jones posted a video of her son Keaton online. It went mega-viral.
The video, which has been viewed on Facebook more than 20 million times since posting, shows Keaton in tears over being bullied at school. There’s a sense of despair and helplessness in his voice that no child should have to feel, but too many have.
“Just out of curiosity, why do they bully?” a distraught Keaton asks his mom. “What’s the point of it? Why do they find joy in taking innocent people and finding a way to be mean to them?”
This is Keaton Jones, he lives in Knoxville and he has a little something to say about bullying.http://pic.twitter.com/coyQxFp33V
— Everything TN (@Everything_TN) December 9, 2017
The video clearly resonated with people — some who have been bullied, some who have been the bully — and within hours, words of support began to roll in from around the world, including some notes from some high profile people.
Hollywood has Keaton’s back.
Avengers Chris Evans and Mark Ruffalo came up big for the little guy.
Stay strong, Keaton. Don’t let them make you turn cold. I promise it gets better. While those punks at your school are deciding what kind of people they want to be in this world, how would you and your mom like to come to the Avengers premiere in LA next year? https://t.co/s1QwCQ3toi
— Chris Evans (@ChrisEvans) December 10, 2017
Little buddy, I was bullied when I was a kid. You are right #ItGetsBetter! You are my own personal super hero. Protect Yo Heart. You got a pal in the Hulk. https://t.co/fRTAENcmV4
— Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) December 10, 2017
As did Eleven from “Stranger Things,” offering her friendship.
Keaton, this is so accurate. Why do people do this? I think your sooo cool Keaton! I wanna be your friend ( but srsly) ur freakin awesome ❤️ https://t.co/LD7Q762bL9
— Millie Bobby Brown (@milliebbrown) December 9, 2017
The delightful Tom Cavanagh of “The Flash” voiced his support  for Jones and against bullies everywhere.
Hey Keaton We here on “The Flash” are on your side – and against bullies everywhere.⚡️ #TheFlash @CW_TheFlash #StandWithKeaton https://t.co/svn8FTZmaT
— Tom Cavanagh (@CavanaghTom) December 11, 2017
Same with Beth Behrs of “Two Broke Girls.”
Keaton Jones you are amazing. So brave and strong and a beautiful human! Sending love from California! https://t.co/AALuA27r0Z
— Beth Behrs (@BethBehrs) December 10, 2017
He got some love from members of “The Walking Dead” cast.
Hey #KeatonJones Just saw your video about the tough time you’re going through. Not sure if you’re a Walking Dead fan but if it happens that you are then please be in touch as I would love to see you and your family @WalkrStalkrCon show in Nashville next year. On me. X
— Tom Payne (@justanactor) December 10, 2017
My dude. Lotta folks got your back. Me included. I’ll come down and have a chat with anybody getting on your nerves. You’re awesome my man. Be strong. Always. You will win because you are the better man. Believe that. Xojd
— Jeffrey Dean Morgan (@JDMorgan) December 10, 2017
Even Gaston and LeFou (a couple of fiction’s most famous bullies) weren’t having it.
I was bullied my whole childhood. Bullying makes me sick. Keaton, it will get better. I promise. These bullies will be a story you will tell one day when you are big and strong and mightier than all of them. https://t.co/8yEqalWfHd
— Luke Evans (@TheRealLukevans) December 10, 2017
This is my message for Keaton. Love you buddy http://pic.twitter.com/pdYK5E7JRk
— Josh Gad (@joshgad) December 10, 2017
Broadway star Ben Platt offered a few words of support.
Keaton- your vulnerability, honesty and emotional intelligence already show how much more powerful, valuable, unique and human you are than any of the bullies you talked about. I have no doubt it will get better and we will all do our part to make sure it does. We love you. https://t.co/JN9hCU49pY
— Ben Platt (@BenSPLATT) December 10, 2017
And so did voice actors Susan Eisenberg and Kevin Conroy, who provided the voices for Wonder Woman and Batman, respectively, on the animated “Justice League” TV show.
Stay strong, Keaton… You are not alone!! #KeatonJones #StopBullying http://pic.twitter.com/ASTUxPlgD4
— Susan Eisenberg (@susaneisenberg1) December 10, 2017
Keaton you are not alone. Please believe that it gets better in time. Bullies are really very weak and not worthy of your tears. I was bullied and grew up to play Batman, how cool is that?! https://t.co/wVWj7PkqLe
— Kevin Conroy (@RealKevinConroy) December 10, 2017
“Coco” director Lee Unkrich and “Ghostbusters” mastermind Paul Feig stepped up.
.@Lakyn_jones Hi! I directed Coco and Toy Story 3. If Keaton ever wants to visit Pixar, he has an open invitation! http://pic.twitter.com/Xv43RONyDr
— Lee Unkrich (@leeunkrich) December 11, 2017
Keaton, you are an amazing kid, a beautiful unique person. You are one thousand times better than any bully. You are right that it will get better one day. You will thrive. Keep learning, stay positive, laugh at how small-minded they are & keep being yourself. @STOMPOutBullyng https://t.co/1rjbarEYDO
— Paul Feig (@paulfeig) December 11, 2017
Some of the biggest stars in professional sports showed up, as well.
LeBron James called bullies “straight up wack, corny, cowards, chumps.”
Damn right! Bullies are straight up wack, corny, cowards, chumps, etc, etc! Keaton keep your head up buddy and push forward! You’re the best https://t.co/pqDgay77l9
— LeBron James (@KingJames) December 11, 2017
Cubs slugger Anthony Rizzo and Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen both offered words of kindness and comfort.
Keaton,U are not ugly, U are amazing. U r my hero for sharing ur story & continuing the conversation about the harm of bullying.Stay Strong! https://t.co/HaO2NqP4SP
— Anthony Rizzo (@ARizzo44) December 11, 2017
This breaks my heart. I stand with you Keaton. You are 1 million times stronger than those bullies. https://t.co/XmGwVYLUjF
— andrew mccutchen (@TheCUTCH22) December 10, 2017
Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Bernard Blake urged Jones to “never be ashamed of who you are.” Former NFL star Antonio Cromartie stepped in to say that bullies are often just insecure about themselves, asking him to be strong.
Keaton I, along with my @CSUFootball and @packers brothers wanted you to know that we stand against bullying. @Lakyn_Jones #StandWithKeaton http://pic.twitter.com/qReeMlDp71
— Bernard Blake (@BamBam_Blake23) December 10, 2017
Keaton you are a handsome young man who is made in the image God. The kids that bully you are very insecure about themselves. And it’s a shame that the parents of those kids won’t be accountable for their kids actions. Keaton Jones I’m here for you buddy. Be Strong young man
— ANTONIO CROMARTIE (@CRO31) December 10, 2017
Former NFL wide receiver Donté Stallworth urged caution for people suggesting that the bullies be confronted with hostility, asking people who really want to make a difference to try to do it through lessons of love.
We all know kids can be little shits at times—especially when it’s a group of them. We have to teach them to be better people as well through love and leading by example. They are kids, they can change their behavior through love.
— Donté Stallworth (@DonteStallworth) December 9, 2017
“Bullying is bullshit,” summed up World Cup champion Ali Krieger. “We need to start coming together, supporting each other and most importantly, standing up for beautiful kids in this world like Keaton.”
This brings tears to my eyes..bullying is bullshit! We need to start coming together, supporting each other and most importantly, standing up for beautiful kids in this world like Keaton. https://t.co/PxGHusq0Dp
— Ali Krieger (@alikrieger) December 11, 2017
Similarly, the music world had words of encouragement and support for Jones.
Demi Lovato predicted that Jones would come out of this experience much stronger than he entered it. Enrique Iglesias called the video “heartbreaking.”
I #StandwithKeaton. Keaton baby, just know you’re not alone. There are so many people who come out of bullying so much stronger and you will be one of them!! God bless you sweetheart. https://t.co/LdCAy2lDHu

Heartbreaking to see this. Keaton you’re strong to say these things and care so much for others. #TeamKeaton https://t.co/hgp0ehnn8Y
— Enrique Iglesias (@enriqueiglesias) December 10, 2017
“This extremely raw and real moment has brought hope and truth to so many people,” wrote Kevin Jonas. Nickelback called Jones “a brave young man,” asking if there was anything the band could do for them.
Keaton jones you are a hero. This extremely raw and real moment has brought hope and truth to so many people. Be you and be forever fearless. Never give up. You are loved!

— Nickelback (@Nickelback) December 11, 2017
Justin Bieber and Snoop Dogg posted words of support on Instagram. “The fact that he still has the sympathy and compassion for other people when he’s going through it himself is a testament to who he is,” said Bieber.
A post shared by Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) on Dec 10, 2017 at 7:20pm PST

Anti-bullying activists, models, and YouTube sensations all got in on the act as well.
Monica Lewinsky offered a few kind words, saying that she’s sorry Jones is being treated this way, saying that other kids “would be lucky to be friends with [Jones].”
keaton, i’m so sorry you’re being treated this way. you don’t deserve one ounce of this pain. they would be 💫lucky💫 to be friends with you. it’ll get better. #KeatonJones #KeatonJonesIsAwesome https://t.co/IZoJQ60eY2

Model Mia Kang said Jones is her “absolute hero,” offering to fly out and visit him at school for lunch.

Politicians across the political spectrum offered words of kindness and courage.
Senator Bob Corker (R-Tennessee) thanked the young man for his courage, and Representative Joe Kennedy III (D-Massachusetts) asked others to look to Jones as a positive example.
Keaton, I know Tennesseans and people across our country join me in saying thank you for your courage. Bullying isn’t acceptable, especially in our schools. We’re all with you! #StandWithKeaton

We can all learn from Keaton Jones. #StandWithKeaton #StopBullying https://t.co/VkiN5cMWCO

Responding to an offer from UFC head Dana White to visit the organization’s headquarters, Donald Trump Jr. offered the Jones family a place to stay. Jane O’Meara Sanders of the Sanders Institute urged action over platitudes, calling on the country to “stand up to bullies — in our schools and communities, on social media and in politics and the White House.”
This boy is incredibly brave and the video really got to me. @danawhite, If he takes you up on your offer to see UFC Headquarters, I would be honored to host him and his family at our place if they need somewhere to stay. https://t.co/EWx05o0yI0
— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) December 11, 2017
💔 It will only “get better someday” if we ALL stand up to bullies – in our schools & communities, on social media & in politics & the White House. Keaton & every other child, teen & adult deserves to be defended against aggression. Please speak up. 💔 https://t.co/JCMPsaBjMd
— Jane O’Meara Sanders (@janeosanders) December 10, 2017
Media personalities joined the chorus with offers of support and workplace tours.
Jemele Hill and Sean Hannity offered Jones and his family tours of ESPN and Fox News, respectively. NBC’s Stephanie Ruhle pointed to Jones as a motivation for a more honest, brave, and kind world.
Hey Keaton, unfortunately you aren’t alone. A lot of kids are bullied, but they will be so uplifted by your courage. You’re a hero, young man. You are treasured and valued. Let me know if you’d ever like to visit ESPN. You can be my special guest. https://t.co/N8mkUTYnEy

HLN’s S.E. Cupp shared a story about being bullied as a child, saying, “It’s got nothing to do with you and everything to do with them.” Sunny Hostin, from “The View,” ended with a reminder that “being different makes you special.”
Keaton buddy, I was bullied just like you. It’s got nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. We love you, little man. Your squad’s BETTER than theirs! 👍🏻💪🏻😘 https://t.co/Z4U0soTCcT
— S.E. Cupp (@secupp) December 10, 2017
The bullies are the problem Keaton. Not you. Always remember being different makes you special. @Everything_TN https://t.co/K9VBbrYSQx
— Sunny Hostin (@sunny) December 10, 2017
It’s wonderful to see so many people, from so many backgrounds, come together in support of this one boy.
It’s worth remembering, however, that he’s not the only child in the world being bullied.
According to StopBullying.gov, 28% of U.S. students in grades 6 through12 have experienced bullying. 30% of students have admitted to being a bully to others. School bullying creates a hostile environment not conducive to learning and puts students’ physical, emotional, and mental health at risk.

BOOK ⎟ YES PLEASE by Amy Poehler
Forgive me, Universe, for I have sinned. I have sinned by only just now realizing the brilliance that is Amy Poehler – as a comedienne, as a woman, as a human being.
As television’s comedic darling, Poehler has brought us so many hilarious moments; to list them all would be an entire post in itself. From Rachel McAdams’s "cool mom” in Mean Girls and her infinite number of bits as a regular on Saturday Night Live... to hosting the Golden Globes with Tina Fey, becoming the incomparable Leslie Knope on Parks & Recreation, and voicing Joy in Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, she’s done it all and her range appeals to the masses. Trust me when I say I know I’m late to the Amy Poehler bandwagon. But better late than never, right?
Tumblr media
Published in October 2014, Yes Please is (currently) Amy’s first and only book. A non-fiction piece that is equal parts memoir, scrapbook, a supply of advice – or as she says, “sometimes all three at once” – it’s safe to say this collection of personal essays really has no rhyme or reason. It is a conglomeration of stories from various moments in Amy’s life, assembled nonsequentially with equal parts quirky humor and genuine sincerity. While it has been called “messy” by other reviewers (and I’ll agree that it can feel that way), it does not detract from Amy and what she has to share with us. In fact, I would even say this messiness is representative of her nature. She does her own thing.
For starters, Yes Please is divided into three parts: “Say Whatever You Want,” “Do Whatever You Like,” and “Be Whoever You Are,” each marked with a very intriguing photo of Amy in costume, and is additionally scattered with various anecdotes on brightly colored page spreads. These statements themselves – like the hilariously accurate “Short people DO NOT like to be picked up” or guiding truths like “Forget the facts and remember the feelings” – provide insight into the duality of Amy Poehler, a duality I don’t think people always see. I feel as though so many only see her for her farcical demeanor on television. As someone who read her book having never watched her on SNL (save for the occasional bit), nor seen a single episode of Parks & Rec, I believe that reading her book first gave me a greater appreciation for who she really is as a person, without any preconception of her or her personas in my head. I recognized the inspirational woman she truly is without envisioning her dressed as Hillary Clinton. Sure, I will admit that I didn’t get a lot of the references that her die-hard fans would have, but I think this reversed methodology helps make tackling her filmography much more streamlined; what she deems important enough to discuss in her novel (which, as such, is probably her best work) gives me a good place to start. Notes for later. 👌🏼
It’s when you look past the kookiness, however, that you realize just how much Amy Poehler is Mama Bear to her fans and truly cares about the well being of the world. If you knew it before, it becomes so much more apparent when you read Yes Please.
Although nuggets of wisdom are spread throughout the book amidst the silly re-tellings of memorable career moments, there are complete chapters on the important stuff. While I loved the ones about dealing with personal demons and the multiple passages touching on the sexism and misogyny she herself has experienced, a chapter that gets the most attention – some even calling it required reading – is one entitled “Treating Your Career Like a Bad Boyfriend.” In it, Amy recalls a time when a man on a train gives her a script (or more accurately, tosses it on her table as she sleeps while he’s heading out the door) and how she hates this aspect of her fame. You know, the one when people assume that just because she’s famous and recognized that she can help skyrocket them to a similar celebrity. Amy goes on to remind everyone that most people instead become “famous” or get “great jobs” after years and years of “shoveling shit.”
After then comparing a career to a bad boyfriend – “[It] won’t take care of you... [It] will openly flirt with other people while you are around... [It] will never marry you” – and a little reminder of the difference between creativity and career, it then also becomes an in-depth lesson on ambivalence.
It is often engrained in us to be overzealous about our careers. Poll: how often have you heard tales of your parents “pounding the pavement”? Times have changed where this and follow up phone calls are not proper anymore, but the concept is still there. So to have someone spend a whole chapter saying “DON’T CARE SO MUCH” and to instead harbor your creativity and passions... I have never loved Amy Poehler more than I have in that moment. Not because I lack motivation, but because life is more than just your career.
Also, a favorite passage from this chapter includes this epic truth: “Plenty of talented people don’t have the careers they want. Plenty of untalented people make millions and make movies.”
Of my copious notes taken throughout Yes Please, many are similarly glorious sentiments about careers and about life. In the three years she lived in Chicago, Amy learned that, even if it was in regards to herself as a person, she could decide who she was; “my only job was to surround myself with people who respected and supported that choice.” Or during her 20 years with the Upright Citizens Brigade, she was “proud of the fact that [they] never made money [their] motivating factor.” Even the statement that it wasn’t until she turned 30 that she “started to feel like [her] adult life was beginning” is strangely comforting. Because of all the rules we are supposed to follow and the time frames instilled upon us (like, I will scream if someone mentions biological clocks), these passages and so much more from Yes Please remind us of some important facts: that nothing is set in stone, that we do in fact run our own lives, that each of us does things differently, and likewise we each are allowed to do things at different times... if we even do them at all.
And that brings me to the element of Amy Poehler’s book that encouraged me most to read it in the first place: the inherent feminism. After finishing a very bigot-centric Travels by Michael Crichton (and dare I say, also as a result of the campaigns of the 2016 presidential election), I knew that reading something by a woman, with women-focused principles and encouragement, was incredibly needed to build my morale back up.
Early on in Yes Please, Amy introduces the phrase “Good for her! Not for me.” I’m honestly struggling with the words to stress how important this phrase really is. From a young age, we as women have instilled roles (read: stereotypes) to follow – being purely feminine; becoming mothers and staying home to raise children; that “women belong in the kitchen” mentality. It is something we as ladies have outgrown in modern society, but the shame and “women-to-women crime” (not to mention wage gaps and the like) unfortunately still remains; there is a whole chapter about it in Yes Please. What “Good for her! Not for me” really portrays, at least in my interpretation, is the belief involving women choosing their roles and doing so without feeling bad about it. For example, when it comes to motherhood, Amy Poehler is a working mother who has had nannies help raise her two boys. THAT IS OKAY. My own mother became a stay-at-home mother for the years it took to raise my brother and me, but then started going back to work once we were teenagers. THAT IS OKAY TOO. Even my own beliefs; I have no desire nor feel any rush to get married or have children, and that is perfectly fine. “Good for her! Not for me,” in all honesty, is one of my new mantras.
The womanly wisdom doesn’t end there.
Tumblr media
Just as we’ve heard before from Tina Fey – because it is truly impossible to go a whole conversation about Amy Poehler without mentioning Tina Fey – a later chapter of Yes Please makes mention of the term "bossy women.” Because Amy, too, loves bossy women. She believes they are the women who should be sought out and celebrated; she acknowledges that “’bossy’ can seem like a shitty way to describe a woman with a determined point of view” and that a bossy woman is “someone who cares and commits and is a natural leader.” Amy even openly calls herself bossy. Tina and Amy, both together and separately, have helped lead the movement to remove the negative connotations of the term “bossy” and turn it instead into something empowering. Amy also founded “Smart Girls at the Party” (also known as “Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls”) with friend/producer Meredith Walker that is dedicated to helping young people “cultivate their authentic selves.” There’s no doubt that teaching young women about the connotations of “bossy” is part of that cultivation. If you still don’t believe in the “bossy lady”, see also Bossypants by Tina Fey and #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso.
Then there’s Amy’s friendship with Tina, period. Tina is often referred to in Yes Please (and just in general, really) as Amy’s “life partner.” Friends since their improv years – that’s over 20 years, guys – Amy credits Tina as the person who makes her feel like she can do anything. As Amy says in Yes Please, “All it takes is for Tina to say ‘We can do this, right?’ and I suddenly feel like I can jump off a bridge.” Amy and Tina have that relationship everyone literally wishes they had with someone. A look at those two reminds us of the importance of friendship, or more accurately, female companionship.
The truth is, the more I go over my notes about it, the more I grasp just how many vital points Amy Poehler makes in her book amidst the tales of life and comedy. I mean, to round it all off, let me just add that Amy also actively works with the Worldwide Orphans Foundation. Do I dare say that this woman is a saint? Or at least a godsend for the women and children of the world?
Often while reading Yes Please, I felt like Amy was a good friend of mine that had written a long, detailed letter to me about how her life has been so far and what she’s learned from it. Realistically – though we all wish we could call Amy a friend – her words were that of a mentor, telling her readers about working hard, following your passions, the candor of being a woman in today’s society, that no one can do it alone nor do you have to, and...
“The only thing we can depend on in life is that everything changes.”
Amy Poehler is an comedienne, actress, producer, director, voice artist, and writer. She is an incredible humanitarian, including her work with the Worldwide Orphans and her own foundation, Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls. Amy Poehler is often linked to Tina Fey.  Yes Please by Amy Poehler Dey Street (Harper Collins) | October 2014 | 329 pages MY RATING: ★ ★ ★ ★ ✩ Amy writes a lot like I do, with dashes of humor mixed in, so I could already identify with her. And a lot of people didn’t like that she kept saying that writing is hard... It took me three days to write this review; I DEFINITELY RELATE to what Amy has to say about writing. Non-writers, go away!
She is obviously funny in her writing, but not slapstick like people perceive her to be from SNL. She is a great down-to-earth person and Parks & Rec is officially on my to-watch list. Also, major kudos on the paper quality of the hardcover edition.

Little buddy, I was bullied when I was a kid. You are right #ItGetsBetter! You are my own personal super hero. Protect Yo Heart. You got a pal in the Hulk. https://t.co/fRTAENcmV4

On me. X

This is my message for Keaton. Love you buddy http://pic.twitter.com/pdYK5E7JRk

This breaks my heart. I stand with you Keaton. You are 1 million times stronger than those bullies. https://t.co/XmGwVYLUjF
— andrew mccutchen (@TheCUTCH22) December 10, 2017
Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Bernard Blake urged Jones to “never be ashamed of who you are.” Former NFL star Antonio Cromartie stepped in to say that bullies are often just insecure about themselves, asking him to be strong.
Keaton I, along with my @CSUFootball and @packers brothers wanted you to know that we stand against bullying. @Lakyn_Jones #StandWithKeaton http://pic.twitter.com/qReeMlDp71
— Bernard Blake (@BamBam_Blake23) December 10, 2017

Politicians across the political spectrum offered words of kindness and courage.

Keaton, I know Tennesseans and people across our country join me in saying thank you for your courage. Bullying isn’t acceptable, especially in our schools. We’re all with you! #StandWithKeaton

💔 It will only “get better someday” if we ALL stand up to bullies – in our schools & communities, on social media & in politics & the White House. Keaton & every other child, teen & adult deserves to be defended against aggression. Please speak up. 💔 https://t.co/JCMPsaBjMd

If someone can get to me the name of the school, the principal, school board members i will gladly make the calls myself and fix this. Also if anyone knows Keaton and his parents, i will gladly fly them to NYC to be my guest & visit Fox News. https://t.co/uFyp2r2Yn7

At a time when hate wants to reign supreme, let #KeatonJones be our #mondaymotivation – be honest, be brave & be kind. Have a great day at school Keaton! #yougotthis

The bullies are the problem Keaton. Not you. Always remember being different makes you special. @Everything_TN https://t.co/K9VBbrYSQx
