ok i wanna make my own tips post for the redditors

hello welcome :] here's some things i've noticed it seems a lot of you aren't aware of. i might add more later:

first of all, PLEASE turn on custom theme! you don't have to actually make or find a theme yourself as it gives you a default one, (but it is really fun and good to personalize your blog however you want) but doing this makes it easier to view and search your own blog, as i will describe later. this makes it so that you will show up at yoururl.tumblr.com and not just tumblr.com/yoururl it gives you your own page! it's good!! you can only tick this setting on desktop:

another very important thing: DO NOT FUCKING REPOST ART WITHOUT CREDIT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. honestly you should not report art without permission at all, but at LEAST credit the artist. and saying "idk who did this but credit to them" DOES NOT COUNT. take some time to reverse google image search and find the artist. if you can't find them, DON'T REPOST!!! turning the art into a meme doesn't mean you don't have to credit the artist!!!!!! AAHHH!! ok.

TAGS/SEARCHING in reblogs, all tags serve to do is (a) leave a bit of quiet commentary, if you're too shy to leave it in the actual body of the post or (b) organize posts on Your Blog Only. tagging a reblog does not make the post show up in the searchable tag. reblogs are not searchable through the tumblr search bar.

to find posts from a certain tag on your own blog, go to yoururl.tumblr.com/tagged/tag. you can also add /chrono to the end of that url to view the posts in chronological order! you actually don't need to tag original posts with every variation of a tag either. for example if you tag something as "r/196", it will show up when just "196" is searched for, because it contains "196" in it. so you dont NEED to tag the post "196, r196, r/196" etc. but i mean. do whatever u want. honestly i think a lot of veteran tumblr users don't even know that. but yeah tagging with a ton of variations like that is unnecessary unless you're spelling something differently or doing an abbreviation as well as a full title, such as "#what we do in the shadows, #wwdits"

also, your posts are searchable by literally any word in the post, whether it be the body, the tags, or even your url. so if your url has 'catboy' in it, and someone searches 'catboy' they will see all of your original posts in the tag lmao. it is pretty stupid but that's how it works.

on that note, FILTERING with filtering tags, it is very specific. so if youre content warning tagging something, please just tag it with the word, like "#blood" because if you tag it "#cw blood" or "#blood ///" people who just have "#blood" blocked, will still see the post! lots of veteran tumblr users don't seem to grasp this either 😭

you can filter out words as well as tags, but that can get tricky because if you filter out "rape" words like "grape" and "drape" will also be blocked, so i only use the word filter to block peoples urls. because even if you have someone blocked, you can still see people reblogging their posts, so if u don't wanna see them at all, block their url as a filtered word.

you can do all of this in the regular ol' 'settings' tab on desktop. on mobile it's settings -> general settings -> filtering

PAGES something i love about tumblr but is getting used less and less is the ability to make separate pages on your blog. the option to do so is all the way at the bottom on the theme customization panel. (only available on desktop tumblr)

nowadays a lot of people just make a carrd and provide a link to that, but tumblr allows you to make your own separate blog pages! a lot of people use this to make "about me" pages, since it provides a lot more freedom than just the "blog description" section! you can put images on there, and just completely code the whole thing yourself! unfortunately, these pages aren't visible on mobile unless you link to them in your blog description (see my blog as an example) using <a href="link">link title</a> lots of people have links like this in their descriptions that lead to about pages or carrds! you should click on these to learn more about the person you're following!!

some people have "DNI (do not interact)" or "BYF (before you follow)" pages to set boundaries on who they do or don't want following them, as a warning of like "hey if you fall under this criteria and you follow/interact with me, you're getting blocked" so those are good to check for! some folks have lots of strong opinions on these that theyre "stupid" or "useless" but really it's just a warning and setting boundaries. like, if you follow me and ur not supposed to, i'm just gonna block you anyway, it was just a warning that that's what was gonna happen!

speaking of blocking, just fuckin' block whoever you want whenever you want. if you find someone annoying just block them. if they post something you don't like just block them. there's no need to get into an argument. just block! and they're gone! wheeee!!

SIDEBLOGS!!! you can have separate blogs from your main one that are connected to your same account! some people have tooooons of sideblogs for every single fandom they're in, some people just use their main for everything. it's up to you!

note that you can only like posts, send asks, follow people, and reply to posts under your main blog url. sideblogs are just for posting and reblogging in a more organized manner :] it's good to say in the description of your side blog what your main blog is so people know who you are when you like and reply to posts and such! (and also to list your sideblogs somewhere on ur main for the same reason. i use the aforementioned about page for this ^u^)

um that's it for now! there's a lot of other things i could talk about, but i'm sure other posts are covering it.. these are just ones i really want to iterate, especially the tags thing cause i think a lot of tumblr users don't even realize that lol ^u^ i've been active as fuck on tumblr since 2013 so I can answer questions if you have any :)

okay so obviously kon. do i even need to say that one? that's a gimme on this blog i think so actually i'm gonna go for a second option and also say bart. he is also such a victim of the pendulum of wrong opinions (one incorrect fanon idea gains traction; people react by going entirely too far the other way). he isn't a complete idiot with the mentality of a toddler, but he's not a super genius that everyone just unfairly dunks on either. like, he's incredibly smart, but he is incredibly bad at applying his smarts without a very specific sort of guidance (which is also why he's not a good leader or strategist).

for people who dont know.... mainly people coming here from a dif site,

using GIFs from the gif panel that adds the little credit link strip... shows up in the gifmakers notifications (ran into this a lot when i used to make gifs as a minor and had NSFW blogs using them for... some reason.) it directly tells the person what post their gif is used in. just be aware.

replying VIA someone else's reblog of a post notifies them that you are replying there. good tool when for example, theyre reblogging a post asking a question because both the poster and reblogger is confused. if youre gonna get in arguments though... do it on your own RB, spare the notifs of your poor mutual.

you can answer asks privately by the drop down menu where "save to drafts" etc is. this only works if the asker is off anon, but answers the ask back into their own inbox.

blocking someone deletes every ask they sent you. screenshot an ask if you want to keep it, you could lose proof of harassment. (ive been burned by it before)

posting a ton of tags that are not related to the posts contents is considered spam, and you CAN get banned for it.

reblogs cant be searched by the general search with tags... you dont need to tag reblogs of things with regular post tags. tagging # furry # sfw fur # artists on tumblr # sparklefur # support artsist etc on a reblog... doesnt do anything, unless youre using those tags to organize on your own blog. tags are really only useful for personal organization and talking, when it comes to reblogs.

spamming every post you make with something hardly related is really, really annoying to most people. theres no reason to tag a post that just says something like "i like bluey" with # freedom of fiction # proshipping # radqueer # trans artists or something. its just gonna make people block you, and once again, you can be reported for it. yes, you may be a trans person whos an artist who likes bluey, but the post doesnt really meantion that. best to simply tag it as the show, if you really, really think thats a post people would actively want to find.

tumblr clout is fake, huge follower counts dont mean anything here basically. it may look good from the outside but sucks bad to anyone whos ever had those numbers. trust me on this one. theres a reason i remake every time i hit around 70-200 followers.

while some peoples blogs may be aimed at helping others, discourse or discussion, the default is just a blog. meaning, a lot of peoples posts are just person things, and theyre not required by any means to be an educator or respond to arguing. in fact, most people will get kinda pissed if you set up shop to argue on their random 2 note posts.

dont screenshot other peoples posts and then repost them. idk why people do this so much. just reblog it. you can just reblog it. if you think its funny, helpful, just reblog them.

you cant send asks from sideblogs, but you can send anons and sign off the sideblogs @ . its pretty normal. in general, signing off anons is an old tradition on here. a little too afraid to say something super directly? sign off with an emoji or something! you can be someones secret admirer!

you can hide your blog from search results in your settings if you want.

url hoarding can and oftentimes does get you ban. many people get away with it, many people dont. make it clear if you have a url you wanna keep that youre using it or the blog is a WIP.

OPs of a post see every tag if the post isnt deleted. we do. be funny, talk about your ocs, do whatever. just dont be mean.

similarly, dont get mad when you act up on someone elses post and they get mad at you. we see the tags saying "holy fuck this person is stupid". yes we will probably respond to them. you look crazy for getting mad at someone for replying to you coming into their house and calling them dumb.

asks can be "eaten" and disappear for multiple reasons. sometimes its glitches, sometimes its having non-text contents, etc. if you dont have your ask answered and get a little antsy about it you can always ask the blogger if they received it, sometimes they just simply never come through

dms on tumblr SUCK. theyre BAD. asks are a good alternative if you cant stand them and dont have a seperate platform like discord

sending people gore on anon or dms on tumblr is laughable because you probably arent their mutual if youre doing that, and images sent from tumblrs you dont follow get blurred out. thanks for the red and orange gradiant i know what that is and you look stupid. its easy to get ban on tumblr when youre being harassed, even if youve had a perfect track record. getting your blog back can be confusing and frustrating but making alt accounts will only work against you. i made a guide on getting your blog back here. I don't follow a bunch of blogs, the urls and icons of ops and the like dont really matter unless they are serial offenders and the block and blacklist option makes my dash comfortable as hell. I could never achieve that on twitter no matter what. 1 billion users on tumblr? for you maybe, indeed.

The only indicator that there are more people than the ones i follow is the number of notes on a post.

And it helps that this is a site where nothing matters. Follower counts, clout, numbers, none of it matters. Everyone is the same fucking racoon in a trashcan behind a subway.

And I think that's why I prefer tumblr.

I dont doubt that there are /horrendous/ takes and batshit insane posts out there with people actually believing them and being unironic. But that doesnt ever reach me. And when it does, then usually with a lot of reblog replies that make it almost funny.

I think Yao/Ch!na is a really interesting dude. Ancient man, seen a lotta shit, been through a lotta different styles of government. China has a long and rich history you could do quite a bit with. I took two classes on it in undergrad and, while I don't remember a lot of the details now of who did what/why/when, I found it immensely enlightening from a 'why China is what is is today' perspective, which is what I ultimately got. I don't write him for that reason and, honestly, don't know how I'd fit him into what I'm writing unless I pivoted to making Lutz and Al main characters (which I'm not). I would love some good recs from people who read historically-based stuff that includes Yao. This applies for In/dia too for much the same reasons. What does it mean to be so old when you're immortal? How do you avoid apathy? How do you keep life interesting? Could also go into weightier topics with them as well - how it feels to have been both colonizer and colonized, not sure if it applies to In/dia as well but certainly Yao - but the writer would have to be knowledgeable and skilled enough to pull it off. I don't think your generic fanfic author can - I get nervous about publicly toeing the line myself

I used to be an Alfred and Arthur stan. They were my favorite characters in the entire series!!! They had the benefit of being the countries I'm most familiar with because, if you haven't heard, I got that dual citizenship dudes. Now, don't get me wrong, I still enjoy writing them whenever they appear naturally and have a lot of Thoughts on how they should be characterized, what their relationships with each other/everyone else should be, etc but they're not the main focus of 90% of my fics now. They're guest stars that I love to have on set (goddamn that's trite). As for who I don't like, I've never been a Matthew person. I think it's doing a disservice to an entire country to just have his personality be 'forgettable' and 'soft-spoken.' Which like yeah sure, I follow people who have done more with him and have made him an actually interesting character (credit to Foxholes, whose url changed and now I can't find them and don't wanna tag their history blog), but beyond the one or two characterizations of him, I don't care. Hmm, interesting question. All the major nations don't bother me and make sense for why they're there. I also appreciate HRE being around, but I'm not crazy about a lot of things about his characterization. I especially hate the bad Italian accent he has in the English dub. Have never gotten that because, as Voltaire once put it, that empire ain't Roman. I think there's a lotta cool stuff you can do with HRE (@kisamesopelagic 's Karl is awesome and parts of theirs has served as inspiration for mine, who tends to linger just-offscreen) but the canon one is very meh. As for one's who I don't think belong point blank period, the entirety of the micronations. I have a hard time buying that Sealand is out here running around like a menace but state, provinces, prefectures, etc aren't. A fucking rusty ass fort in the middle of the Atlantic versus Quebec? Get outta here dude. Plus, besides some of their designs, all their personalities grate on my nerves. A whole ass African continent with next to no characters depicted but yay we got Kugelmugel. Jfc

this fandom makes me feel so freaking guilty about being a Billy stan and shipping mungrove. I can literally make an entire book about all the tiktoks and posts I've seen about people bashing Billy stans because billy is racist and what not. ive pretty much only had four notable phases while ive been on tumblr (which is. incredible considering ive been here total of about 12 years LOL), buuuut lets see!

i had a doctor who phase, but that was like ten years ago and mostly on my previous blog (long gone by now) so it might have not been that one lol. i dont remember if or how much of it carried over to this blog honestly

i had a long time game grumps/nsp/other associates phase, from about 2013/2014 forwards? to up to maybe like 2018 actively?

and alongside with that actually there was the asagao academy phase that lasted well beyond the game itself. i think i was still running selfinsert (and nate) content up until like 2019? early 2020?? its hard to remember

anddddd now we are here! which has always been kinda my thing but its now pretty much the only fandom im here for unless i have a brief phase with something else im obsessed with lol

thanks for all these resources! I’m curious—I’ve done plenty of rp before but never in a blogging setting. What’s the etiquette for interacting with other rp blogs to start something up?

You're very welcome, anon!

To start off, make sure you have read their rules first. A lot of people prefer to roleplay with mutuals, (unless they wrote something like 'will roleplay with anyone' or 'non selective' in their info page) so generally if someone follows you back, it means they want to interact with you.

Some rpers have side blogs, so they follow from their main blogs which may not have a similar url.

But there's nothing against writing someone a message asking them if they want to roleplay with you. The worst thing that can happen is they say no and if that's the case, don't worry about it! There are plenty of others who will! It's important to respect everyone's choices, though.

Now onto the actual interaction. You follow someone, they follow you back, how do you begin a thread?

There are a few ways you can do it.

Option 1: You jump into their inbox, in character.

Your character bumps into theirs, they ask them a question, and the thread pretty much goes on from there.

Option 2: You jump into their inbox, out of character.

You can also introduce yourself ooc (out of character), say hi and ask how the other person imagines your muses meeting. This works well if you just dont have any ideas or have a very unique one you're not sure what your partner thinks of it.

Option 3: Memes (or sentence starters)

If the blog you want to play with recently reblogged some ask box memes, send one or two! It's a quick way to break the ice.

Option 4: Starter calls

A starter call is a post that says 'hey, like this post if you want me to write you a starter!' If someone likes it, you write them something where your muses meet.

Option 5: Open starters

Open starters aren't addressed to anyone in specific but are open to everyone who wants to write with you. (You can specify mutuals only in the tag so random rp blogs dont jump on it)

More than one person might reply to it, no worries, you can still have separate threads with them.

Note: A closed starter is when you write one for a person in specific. It is etiquette not to reply to this thread unless you are the one who was tagged in it.

My stupid guide to getting the stupid list of people YOU FOLLOW on tumblr

if tumblr has some way fo getting a list of usernames and urls of blogs you follow i don't know of it, if theres some script i don't know it, if theres anything. LET ME KNOW. but since i dont think there is welcome to my bruteforce method of getting a list of people you follow.

I am not a coder, i don't know how to do this with a program, and i dont know of any program that does it, no programmer thats going to or anything so im bruteforcing this in perhaps a stupid way but it works

go to your https://www.tumblr.com/following page

its just this same link, it takes you to the list of everyone you follow Then you need to load EVERY FOLLOWER by scrolling ALLL THE WAY DOWN the list, i have 2000 blogs i follow but ti doesnt take long for me to get to the end, yes you have to do this.

rightclick and select inspect

a box will come up, this might be scary for non techy people, don't worry were just looking at the code underneath the site, nothing you change will be permanent. dont mess around here unless you know kinda what youre doing, but dont be scared for what were gonna do.

there are several tabs to this new window, we want to be in the inspector tab, and when you mouse over the text in here you can notice that it flashes certain parts of tumblr. these different lines all pertain to certain spots of the webpage so you can see what tumblr wants you to see.

we want to find where they put the followers

so were gonna hover over:

and notice that the very center and only the center where you're followers are shown is lit up, that means inside this line somewhere is your follower list ((its not gonna be pretty)) use the little arrow on the side of this line and click it to expand the underlying code (this is really called nesting i think im not a coder, basically when there an arrow, theres stuff in there)

open the next arrow too (main something something)

keep hovering over the lines within this one and see which one lights up the center and only open that one, next one is "section something something" next class something something

now this might start to look familliar to you if you read all these "data-cell-id=" lines these are all the people you follows usernames,

I'm sure someone who knows how to code would be able to grab this in a neat way and put it in a text document for us, but i dont know how to do that i just know i want it.

so what i do is:

right click the line whose arrow we just opened to be able to see this and select "copy, inner html" this line to be clear

and i make a new notepad document(txt) on my computer, and i paste all that shit in there. and yes it looks like complete nonsense because everything is going everywhere with text you dont need or understand. dont worry about it. you still have all your list of following usernames in there.

now i used vs code(or visual studio code) (its a free program you can just get it if you want use google) and you dont even need to know any coding for this cleaning step. to clean this up, i open the document i created with all this shit in it in vs code and it has the capability to select every instance of a word or symbol or whatever and delete every single one, or replace it. it can also write with multiple cursors at the end of every line of text at the same time. so this way i can get rid of all this nonsense stuff to line up everyones usernames the way i'd like.

you can use google to figure out how to do this, or fuff about in vs code, but selecting a chunk and right clicking and choosing "change all occurrences" is what i used the most.

now if someone who actually codes could… help.. help me please.. dont let anyone else have to use this guide, there has to be a better way. thank you i love you

so i realized that any gif that used to have the source where if you click the gif to open a new page, it used to go to where you went as the source of said gif and not the blog and now google and tumblr are saying those gifs are mine and im sitting here like damn yall deactivated all these blogs so heres this.

btw for those new here: the regenerations posts where the gifs are for each face of my ocs? those are deactivated blogs now. and i dont know where the fuck they are except for like the most recent ones.

and most of those gifs are from gif hunts that were around in 2014 and back so. and just roughly ever gif was from a post that i have reblogged where it contains said source of gif [if i havent made a specific gif myself via the tag mv: mungifs]

so if i start popping up as the source of these gifs after using google image search source and you dont see where that gif is originated from thats not this one - its afucking lie i was there but the original owner of the gifs and tumblrs shoddy tag search make it the true source deactivated and that post gone unless preserved by a reblog and thats all before the tumblr updates.

so if you find the sources for all the other ones which is like 300+ (because i only did scott mcclure and david tennant and park si eun (1980) gifs for vin/v but everybody else is everybody elses so anything made in 2010 2014 and you made a photopost via link url: its now gone. and now you are the owner instead of the source of the person who made the gif in the first place so i despise that lil subtle development. because now i've lost essentially a big limb of bookmarked sources via links)

and im not taking them down because im still looking for them as well and thats all i got to go on. that relic of a time long gone.

like all those that came from free gif packs are gone. they are fucking gone or rather i cannot find them that isnt serach engines trying to gaslight me that i made these gifs knowing full well my gifs are not pretty in comparison and are very nearly 300 frames but resized to the others 30 to 80 fps. and most of those gifs pack a large majority of them came from the gifmakers themselves. all of them are gone.

its annoying and i hate it. and no one has complained about it yet. but i am im complaining what the fuck tumblr please you cant just link it to wayback or something? help me out damn.
