MASSIVE dump of thoughts about Rebirth. Obvious major spoiler warning for pretty much every story beat aside from side quests. That goes for the compilation as a whole.

Think of this as a collection of what would otherwise be literally hundreds of separate obnoxious text posts. Half-review, half liveblogging. Genuine praises and criticisms interspersed with unhinged nonsense. This post is so long it's making my computer lag, so make of that what you will.

To keep it organized and make it easier to find specific moments, this is split up chapter by chapter. I cover the Zack/Biggs stuff in a separate section just before the final chapter, and then follow up with some miscellaneous thoughts.

I'm not of hardcore OG FFVII faith. I love the original, and I view it as separate from Remake/Rebirth, so I embrace most of the major changes. This is generally a very positive review, aside from a few nuisances *cough cough WHISPERS cough* and only one genuinely upsetting letdown. Rebirth is more than I could ever have asked for, and I can't wait to spend the next 4+ years obsessively gushing about it. And now, without further ado...!

Chapter 1: Fall of a Hero (The Nibelheim Incident)

NAILED it.

Love seeing Cloud's teenage squishiness scrambled together with the Zack mannerisms. Restless as a little puppy! Body language, facial expressions, etc. I wonder if they animated a lot of it with Zack's model first, and then replaced it with Cloud? Modders are gonna have a field day with this when the PC version drops.

Sephiroth really was just Some Guy, huh? It's very refreshing to see him acting fully human for once. Helps sell the catastrophic mental shitshow that ensues.

The bridge collapse scene is beautifully expanded upon. Such a delicious moment if you know the real story. RIP Ramirez. o7

There is NO fucking way Sephiroth just... stood there unfazed by waist high rushing water. Y'all have any idea how dangerous just ankle-deep water is at those speeds? At least the generous use of artistic license in physics is established very early on.

Tifa demonstrating incredible self restraint by choosing not to strangle Zack to death at the mako spring. I would have walloped his cocky ass lol

"Such a puppy." We're establishing the homoerotic tension right away as well, thank god.

oooOOOouhh the way you can pinpoint the precise moment that Sephiroth starts to lose control at the reactor. The way he walks up those stairs.......

Mwahaha-ing over the visual parallels. Raising his hand to the candle flame... Jenova's face flickering over his own... wow. Every shot, every angle is carefully chosen. Cinematography at it's finest.

OG painted a picture of "no survivors," so it surprised me how many people seemed to have escaped from Nibelheim. Although, it's not certain what their ultimate fate was. I imagine they did it this way to show that the incident impacted far more people than just Cloud and Tifa. Makes sense, considering "sheer scale of suffering" is a recurring theme throughout the Re-trilogy so far.

Sephiroth's mass slaughter is bone chilling. The music, the tension, the iconic shot of the flames framing his figure. Goddamn. And then there's the poor trooper, reaching out for his mom.........

"Why didn't they just shoot him?? They had him surrounded!!" 1, Fear doesn't give a damn about rationality. 2, It's SEPHIROTH. They were almost certainly correct in assuming that their dinky little hunting rifles weren't gonna do jack shit.

Catch me giggling over the most mundane shit. LOVE the detail of the sword tip clanking on the metal floor as Tifa drags it. I'm obsessed with lovingly crafted, nearly unnoticeable sound design like that.

"Mother, they have come again." THANK FUCK they kept this line. I don't even know why, it just stuck with me so hard from OG.

Not sure why people are cranky that the flashback cuts off. It ends at the exact same point as in OG. That's the point, it's supposed to be frustrating.

Seeing an unfathomable number of dumbass comments going "huh??? why did cloud tell the story all wrong??? that's not what happened!!" Dear Lord Please Give Me The Strength

Tifa being proactive instead of stewing in confusion!! Love that for her. But damn it didn't go down well, huh. "I was so happy to see you again, but maybe I shouldn't have been." BIG OOOOOF

Chapter 2: A New Journey Begins (Kalm and The Grasslands)

Very interesting news broadcast ya got goin' on there, Shinra...

Kalm is so so so so pretty. Feels like an actual full sized city now! Wish we could have seen more of it at night, like in the OG.

Broden!! I like him. I want the best for him. I know he's fucked. But really, it's cool to see more SOLDIER characters. We get to see Cloud's uh-oh brain static moments from the outside perspective, and boy howdy, it ain't pretty.

Broden says he's "...on your side. Got a contact at HQ." Meanwhile, my delusional ass: CONTACT? KUNSEL? IS IT KUNSEL? DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE NAMED KUNSEL?

Mentioned it in a different post— I suspected they changed the arrangement of Midgar's sectors. Sure enough, it's confirmed by looking at Rebirth's world map. Is this a meta fate-has-been-altered thing, or is it just a curious retcon? Maybe a bit of both?

Ok serious talk. Wtf is up with the audio mixing. Someone gave the thumbs up for this production?! The default music volume is WAY too loud and overpowers voice lines. Doesn't help that Remake's npc dialogue deluge in crowded areas hasn't been addressed at all. C'mon people, you had years to fix this shit. It's a shame too, because I would love to hear all of the beautiful music and talented voice acting, just... separately, please.

I know Midgar Zolom was a blind idiot translation, but I dunno man. Midgardsormr just doesn't do it for me. Zolom sweetie come home :(

FUCKING. FUCK. WHERE'S THE LINE. FUCK!!! Apparently Sephiroth Did Not Do This. Goddammit. Fucking blasphemy. Genuinely gutted that they didn't include that line. Imagine if they had pulled that shit with Me Gongaga. Unacceptable.

Chapter 3: Deeper into Darkness (Mythril Mines)

"Enough for her Standard Course twice, right?" keep it up Aerith you're doing amazing :)

Ah, the opening area of the mines has been converted into a museum. No wonder people are allowed to just waltz right on in.

ELENA!! Oooooh I love her voice!! She's got that young overconfident sass. Fits her perfectly. She's got me sweating bullets seeing her kick a grenade around like a soccer ball though YIKES

Those Boulders Are Not Made Of Solid Rock

Not much else to say about the mines. Love when the original version of the music kicked in. Barret and Red's dynamic is so good!

Chapter 4: Dawn of a New Era (Junon)

We just, uh, waiting for the bus there, folks? OH SHIT sorry about the bird of prey thing man, that sucks. Hope you feel better soon

Contrary to maybe popular opinion, but I actually love it when you know exactly what a character is going to say or do next. It means the writers have done a great job at getting that character across. Predictable does not always equal bad; tropes exist for a reason after all.

Lowkey disappointed that they cut the uncomfortably long CPR minigame. Gamers nowadays have no idea how good they have it. Back in my day, we had to give mouth-to-mouth for 5 minutes straight in deafening silence.

Gotta be prepared for even the most unlikely scenarios! (As a writer, I know how it is with suspension of disbelief. But it's still kinda doofy lol)

THE MUSIC

Tee hee omg it's so cute to see Cloud in his element! Look at that boy go. He's so into it. I like hearing all of the Seventh Infantry's interactions, too. Really hammers it in that they're all just normal people with their own worries and hopes.

Oopsie daisy. I am not immune to Shinra Propaganda. Huh. Well done, writers.

Chapter 5: Blood in the Water (Shinra-8/Ship to Costa)

Little bit of Traces of Two Pasts! So Aerith told Tifa about Faz, the weird guy that was a little bit too nice to Ifalna. Apparently Aerith is still shaken up by that. Don't blame her.

Ok. I've been avoiding the topic of Queen's Blood, because frankly, my opinion on it is completely unfounded and irrational. I fucking hate card games in video games that are not supposed to be solely about card games. I can't help it. I'm here for the pretty people rpg and the gut-wrenching t4t heartbreak, not for the Magic the Gathering subplot. Any time this game so much as breathes the name Queen's Blood in my direction, I feel something visceral welling up inside of me. So as you can imagine, The Chapter Where You Play Queen's Blood is not my personal favorite.

But I get it! It's not like there was much to do here in the OG. I like that they went out of their way to flesh the ship out and give it more to remember. And for people who like Queen's Blood, I'm happy for them!!

Chapter 6: Fool's Paradise (Costa del Sol)

Cloud acting like that lei is strangling him. Sameeee dude same but no really. This place sucks. Too many people trying to force this poor guy to have fun against his will.

If I have to hear "hang loose" one more time, there will be bloodshed.

I do not trust that man to ride safely and sanely on that wheelie. He can't even walk on his own two feet without endangering every physics object in the vicinity.

OUTFIT REVIEW TIME

Cloud's Tits Out: An unusual sight. I feel like he should be smooth under there like Link BOTW. He looks a little too robust for someone who's got Big Oil And Brain Worms In There and hasn't slept in weeks. I appreciate the commitment to making him pale as paper and flat as a board. No top surgery scars lose points big time. I'm neutral about the toes. 4/10

Cloud's Business Casual: Immaculate. Tastefully hideous. That blue is NOT your color, girl. Chocobo imagery is always a plus. Absolutely mystified by the untied capris + 3/4 sleeve scoop neck combo. Pretty sure he's not wearing any socks with those tennis shoes. Sneakers in the sand is a helluva sensory experience for an autistic guy like him, I deeply respect it. 9/10.

Tifa's Frilly Miniskirt: Cute and confident. Split between it being utterly out of character for her, or 1000% perfect for her. The white and purple is a great color combo. Slightly concerned about the structural integrity of the neck strap. Uncooperative hairstyle is understandable but kills the vibe a bit. Jealous of the sandals. 8/10

Tifa's Tie Front: DAMN. Stripes with the collar, black jean shorts, hell yeah. The giant belt buckle is just asking for a nasty burn mark, though. Whatever. She's rockin' it. I dunno man, I'm at a loss for words, you just gotta see it to believe it. 10/10.

Aerith's Keepin' It Simple: Tried and true. Pink always works in her favor. Love the little matching flowers in her hair. The wrap around wallet chain is a welcome sprinkle of weirdness. Otherwise masterfully boring; it suits her city-slickin' down-to-earth attitude. 9/10

Aerith's Floral Cover Up: Classy. Got that Final Fantasy princess look with the ruffled sleeves and the push-up cut. The long skirt is nothing short of perfection. Lovestruck by the splash of lime green with the leaf pattern. Can't imagine how annoying those shin-high sandal straps might be though, that's gonna leave a mark. 9/10

Barret's Bear Wearing A Marshmallow: Pillsbury Dough Man at his finest. Faithful to the original, exquisite in 4K HD. Hoist hook arm adds that extra sailor flair, sealing the look. He's having fun with it, and that's what matters most. 10/10!

Yup, somehow they managed to make Hojo even more nauseating than ever before. Good. The more we hate him, the worse it'll sting when he keeps dodging his comeuppance. Hohohohoho.... That's Good Writing, Babie! Twist that knife. Keep us ravenously thirsty for revenge!!

Seen a lot of complaints about the women that accompany Hojo to the beach and shower him with compliments and oohs and aahs. Not sure why. Pretty sure it's heavily implied that they're being paid SHIT LOADS of gil to act that way. It's stated outright that they're working for Mayor Kapono, and it's well established by that point that the mayor is wrapped tight around Shinra's pinky finger.

The moment that beach fight started, I knew right away... GRAB THAT UMBRELLA, DO YOUR LEGACY PROUD

Aerith showing her vengeful side, just a tiny bit. So much pent up hatred and grief. Love how it mirrors Cloud's character. She's so forgiving, she doesn't know how to turn anger into action. He's so caught up in his anger, that he forgets what forgiveness could do for him. Man. :'(

Chapter 7: Those Left Behind (Corel)

WELL! Ain't that the dolly zoom of a lifetime! It's absolutely wild to watch Cloud's mental state worsen gradually in real time. Seeing him almost walk off a cliff was freaky. Good stuff

Poor Barret...... damn dude. The people of Corel were nasty to him in the OG, but they cranked that up to eleven in Rebirth. Wow.

Chapter 8: All That Glitters (Gold Saucer First Visit)

And now for a jarring tonal shift! Yeahh... this game suffers from awkward pacing. A lot. Though I do suppose that's the point— hellish suffering juxtaposed with distasteful extravagance, just how Shinra prefers it.

Dio should snap him in half like a twig. I think it would be good enrichment for Cloud.

Ok. I'm pretty sure this is like. the fourth time Cloud's pupils have gotten all blown out upon seeing Sephiroth. There may be a clinical explanation for this, but there sure as hell ain't a straight one. The submissive little gasps are NOT helping.

I'm fucking pissed on behalf of anyone who has to stay the night at this dumbass hotel. Oh my god. How could anyone fall asleep in this obnoxious hellscape.

Oh man. Dyne time. This entire part is so damn good. Barret wants so badly for Dyne to be the beloved friend he used to be, but he's just way too far gone. So much resentment and grief.

Second half of the Dyne battle is a little bit weird, but I can tentatively accept it.

Was definitely wondering how they would handle Dyne's suicide given the teen rating. They circumvented the issue by having Shinra troopers gun him down in a crazed last stand. Different from the OG, but still believable and well written, considering their limitations.

Now that I think about it, this game is REALLY pushin' it with the teen rating. I'm willing to bet the rating boards were like, "yeah uh we can make an exception. it's FFVII we're talkin' about." Still... wonder why they couldn't go as far with Remake.

"You carry that guilt... That weight..." Wow. That line.

Annnnd jarring tonal shift! Robot frog fight versus the comedy relief villain. To be fair, I can't think of any other decent place to put this boss, either. On the bright side, Anuran Suppressor is awesome. Favorite fight in the game so far!

Chapter 9: The Planet Stirs (Gongaga)

Ah. The deranged picnic music.

Gongaga has a much different vibe than it did in the OG. The intense feeling of mourning and hardship is missing. No hazy purple hues or Anxiety playing. Seems like they went in more of a CC direction, with the bright blue sky and uplifting soundtrack. Can't lie, I'm a tiny bit disappointed; I was really hoping for something more heavy and melancholic.

The existence of ordinary chickens in the FFVII universe has some frightening implications for the true nature of chocobos. If you have ever kept backyard chickens, you'll know what I mean.

Ohhhhhhh.... Zack's home............. :((((((

No. No. Don't play Sky Blue Eyes. Don't fucking do this to me. I'm gonna fucking cry. Oh my god no.

Man, I really wish we knew more about Tifa and Aerith's chats. Dramatic irony's a bitch.

They sure went all out with the mushroom thing, huh. I know they were trying to differentiate Gongaga in terms of gameplay and worldbuilding, but I feel like they went a little overboard. Gongaga was its own unique thing in OG, not sure why they felt the need to quote unquote improve upon it. Just kinda weird.

Now the reactor is a different story. They did an incredible job here. The scale of the reactor, the unprecedented destruction—

Oh God Damn It The Whispers Are Back

Seriously trying so hard to justify in my own mind why the whispers are here. I don't despise them as a concept, but their implementation is awkward and overdone. In the Gongaga reactor, they fulfill the same narrative purpose as the black robes would: to facilitate the Reunion by mentally dragging Cloud along. Sigh... I get it's because they want to familiarize the player with the whispers in anticipation of future scenes, but it still pisses me off.

That being said, the whispers' theme goes HARD and I'm elated to hear it again. It also fits super well in the Gongaga reactor. So I guess I'm not that pissed.

Touch Me renamed to Amphidex. Can't have shit in Gongaga :/

ooOOOOO!!! The mako fumes getting to Cloud's head! Poor guy's about to pass out. Nice touch.

Sephiroth/Jenova taking advantage of Cloud's mako poisoning... Oh man... the instant change in demeanor is nuts. So fucking good. Here we get to see the first time that Sephiroth has total control over Cloud, and it does not disappoint. Ruthless.

Tifa honey how and why tf are you keeping it together right now. Girl, you do NOT have to fix him. You do not have to show him your boobs a second time. You do not have to take a single thing he says seriously. You can just get up and leave I promise he's doomed by the narrative until further notice 😭😭😭

I would not feel safe alone in a room with a man who just tried to kill me, let alone even remotely consider intimacy, but maybe that's just me. It is refreshing to see Tifa and Cloud actually talk things out for a change.

Cloud knows there's something wrong with him and he's so scared... man :'(

So we're all just perfectly fine with Cloud continuing to be in charge? Nobody's got any objections to that? Alrighty Then

SURPRISE Cid Highwind!! Leaks were right, he's cleaned up. No cigs, less swears, very friendly guy. Not as off-putting as I worried it might be. I'm convinced it's just because he's got a business to run— we'll see good ol' cranky Cid in part 3.

Chapter 10: Watcher of the Vale (Cosmo Canyon)

Red's real voice reveal! Red's real name reveal!! Though I really would have preferred to see his name change to Nanaki in the menu and subtitles...

Cosmo Canyon is coming off as a hippie stoner tourist trap. Yeah all of these people are correct about the planet and the lifestream, but dang if it doesn't feel like someone's about to heckle me into buying healing crystals and dreamcatchers.

The nostalgia is A++. Beautiful remaster of the music, too.

BUGENHAGEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!!!! SO jealous of him zoomin around on that sick af crystal ball. Screw the Costa wheelies, I want one of these bad boys.

...A legendary fakeout in the making, I think!

The observatory is stunning. Can't even put it into words. The planetarium brought me to tears, it's such a flood of nostalgia and a deeply emotional scene. I love the nice detail of the planet being different from Earth— mako tinted oceans instead of deep blue. Watching the model planet rot and crumble broke my heart.

Sobbing the whole way through Aerith's speech. My god. Poor girl. Knowing what her fate is in the OG makes it hurt even worse.

Gi Nattak. Would

Expanding upon the Gi. Unexpected but super cool. Their story reminds me of FFIX, with the parasitic planet Terra lurking deep within Gaia. The Gi and the Cetra seem to have something similar going on. Who was here first? It almost sounds like the Cetra and their lifestream are invaders.

Chapter 11: The Long Shadow of Shinra (Nibelheim)

The intense gaslighting about Nibelheim was one of my favorite things about the OG. It also helped seed even more doubt into Cloud's existence as a real person, setting up his descent into madness over the black materia and vulnerability as Sephiroth's puppet. So the changes they've made to Nibelheim in Rebirth are... unnecessary, to put it lightly.

The villagers do not argue with Tifa or Cloud about their memories of the town. They greet them and tell them all about the town's development into a mako poisoning treatment center. Sigh... Part of what made OG's Nibel revisit so dreadful was the unshakeable feeling that you are not welcome there, and that you're being watched like a hawk. I feel a little bit too comfy here in Rebirth Nibelheim, with how friendly and open everyone's being.

Love the chat with Tifa in her old room. We get so much insight into her thoughts and feelings about Nibelheim, Avalanche, and about Cloud and herself.

Ok Yuffie is actually starting to get a bit obnoxious. Please stop interrupting emotionally charged moments. We get it, you're excited about materia. Cut it out.

If I were Tifa I would be shitting my pants terrified right about now. Girl I do NOT know how you're holding it together.

And now for the most distasteful tonal shift and momentum killer of all time. It's silly kitty cat hijinks time!! ...What the actual fuck. I like Cait Sith, but this is unacceptable. The basement is supposed to be a sickening place of fear and tragedy. Turning it into a cutesy little box chucking playground is downright disrespectful to the original FFVII. I can't even believe I'm writing this, it's so absurd as a concept. This is the only major change that I'm legitimately seriously upset about.

And by god does it drag on. Every time you think, surely this is the final section!... nope. It just keeps on fucking going. Fuck my life, my blood is boiling. Unreal. Remake's slow ass hand-crane highway thing is nothing compared to this. I'll take a Queen's Blood tournament and a hurricane of whispers any day over this unrivaled masterclass in unnecessary bullshit. Fuck.

At least to some people, the reward for getting through the Cait Sith Crate Slog is worthwhile— a few cutscenes starring Vincent Valentine, and a battle against Galian Beast. But if you're like me, and you're not utterly obsessed with Vincent Valentine or Matt Mercer, then by this point, you're just feeling drained and disappointed.

Overall... least favorite chapter. Mellow start, juicy build up with great potential, completely shafted by baffling nonsense.

RIP Roche. Heartbreaking. It's been a good run. Side note, Roche's conversion into a black robe was... quite bizarre. That's just, uh, how that works, I suppose? Okie dokie then

Chapter 12: A Golden Key (Gold Saucer Revisit)

Always felt weird about the Gold Saucer revisit in the OG. Unusual pacing. Well, at least Rebirth's being consistent in that regard.

What's the point of the theater if you're just going to do a VR performance instead? I know it's a silly little nitpick, but I wanna hear some soles squeaking on a hardwood stage!

Ah, that's the point of the VR. So Shinra can use a dead woman's likeness to keep selling tickets to their overhyped shows. Surprised none of the characters say anything about that, given Avalanche's well-established anticapitalist message.

This is what Genesis Rhapsodos decided to hyperfixate on? No wonder the guy's hair started turning grey and falling out in chunks. [SARCASM]

Barret sobbing uncontrollably, right next to Nanaki looking like a rejected Crash Bandicoot reboot clapping his paws together. Sums up this entire game so far.

The "audience participation" in the play is altered significantly from the OG. It's, uh, very neat and tidy. I strongly prefer OG's hysterical secondhand embarrassment and awkward ad-lib.

I NEED to know what happens if you fail all of the QTEs. Please tell me it goes off the rails and Cloud gets booed off stage PLEASE.

The gondola rides!! Overall fantastic. So difficult to pick a favorite. Tifa's is obviously phenomenal, but I think I still have a soft spot for Aerith's. I like that Barret's is taken more seriously; it's such a heartfelt moment. Yuffie reminiscing about Zack was adorable, as well as Cloud relating to her being bad with feelings. The Cait Sith/Cid/Vincent one had me laughing out loud, it was so stiff and awkward lmaoo

Now we're getting WILD with it. The timeline shenanigans are in full swing. Speculation aplenty ahead.

"...or 'homeward bound' maybe?" Still trying to make sense of what exactly these sky-rift worlds are. Aerith's line here seems to imply that this is some kind of purgatory...? Where timelines go to wallow in their death throes? That's my understanding, so far. Especially with all of the mournful npc dialogue.

I tell you what, the Stamp figurine made me GASP. So that's three timelines now. Beagle, Terrier, Spitz.

So Terrier Zack goes to Hojo in hopes of finding a cure for Cloud. Not his finest idea... but oh well. Jealous of his motorcycle. ;)

Sephiroth is combing timelines for one version of Aerith in particular...? Am I on the right track here? Is this the same Aerith from her resolution scene in Remake?

THE PUG made me spit my fucking drink out. Hot damn, there's four! We saw this timeline's conception in the form of the bright flash of light when Terrier Zack chose to go to Hojo.

So Pug Zack instead goes to Biggs at reactor 6. I really, really love this scene. The pump is dry, the planet's life is flashing before its eyes. A heartfelt moment shared between two characters who have had their narrative purposes torn out from under them. Zack gets a delicious bit of character progression, wanting to take back control of his life. Price of Freedom playing in the background has got me wailing like an air horn.

"I'm sick of taking its shit!" WHOA Zack swearing caught me way off guard. He flees from battle for once, instead of facing Shinra head on in this timeline. Wonder how that'll change things.

"You don't look like you're on a date... More like 'at a funeral.'" Mhm. duly noted

Give it up for timeline number five! Corgi Zack is sitting on the stairs at the church.

"Cloud, Biggs, or Aerith... How the hell am I supposed to choose?" You don't have to, darling. It's called a polycule.

Sephiroth slashes a hole in reality, and the black whispers drag Corgi Zack through it. Starting to think I shoulda done my Lifestream Black/Lifestream White homework.

So far, Aerith+Cloud's date "dream" has taken place entirely in the Spitz timeline. It's not clear if this is also true of the scene inside of the church, especially since Sephiroth comes waltzing in after we just saw him outside in the Corgi timeline. I'm getting the impression that time and space are a very hand-wavey thing in this layer of reality.

HEART EXPLODING GHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And now for one of the most exhilirating things I think I've ever seen in MY LIFE.

"Behold... The true nature of reality. When the boundaries of fate are breached, new worlds are born. The planet encompasses a multitude of worlds, ever unfolding. [...] In the planet's embrace, all life is as one." Sephiroth's entire dialogue here... I got goosebumps. That's all.

I notice now on my second watch through, that as early as the sleeping forest scenes, we're cutting back and forth between two different timelines, I believe. Whenever the black or white whispers rush past, we shift perspective from one timeline to another. Pay close attention. Two worlds, simultaneous, but different.

Cloud delivers the white materia from one Aerith to another. Is this the same white materia we see from the beginning of Rebirth? I don't think she swaps the materia out, just transfers its power into her own empty materia, then hands Cloud the newly empty one.

Interesting! Looks like the timeline had already split, all the way back when Cloud handed over the black materia. Previously we saw Cloud and Aerith fall, but now— the white whispers rush past— and we see him rescue her and pull themselves up before they fall. Interesting!

Some youtube theorycrafter will piece together the symbolic significance of literally every tiny detail in this prerendered cutscene and make perfect sense of it. Looking forward to it too, because this is WAY above my paygrade.

Misc. thoughts, not chapter specific:

Love the accentuated mako in SOLDIER eyes. It irked me that the iconic mako color was so muted in Remake, so seeing it so vibrant in Rebirth is sexy as hell.

Um. No comment on Glenn, really. I'm not heavily invested in his story; maybe I'd be more interested if SE had actually done anything substantial with First Soldier and Ever Crisis. I don't mind that he's here, and the Jenova/Sephiroth twist was pleasantly surprising. Matt and Lucia name drop was also a nice touch. It's pretty obvious that the only reason Glenn is here is to help set up a confict against Wutai for part 3. Fair enough.

On to the jobs. I’m not sure how exactly, but this description finally made the oddities of the Kecleon shop click into place for me. Why could I get a Wonder Gummi for free? Why could I pilfer some Rare Fossils and not get aggro’d for it? Why am I able to just pick up this Golden Mask and walk away?

Because these items aren’t normally offered in shops. I just assumed the “Thief!” script applied to every item taken from a shop without paying. And it does, normally. But it doesn’t cover items not meant for sale! Because why bother?

Hehe, that just means more goodies for me 😈

(This was a few days later but LOL... Buddy, I got some News for you.)

Andrea wanted to learn Helping Hand and I went “Eh, why not? Could be useful sometime.” So I exchanged it for Iron Defense, which hasn’t been super useful so far.

Before we left, a Gummi drink gave me a new IQ Skill: Brick-Tough! This is a very welcome addition. As you can see, now Teresa’s and Andrea’s HP is nearly the same!

I recently rewatched Death Note, its been one of my fave anime since I first watched it and it still is :) Some thoughts (hidden for spoilers):

-I know the common opinion is that the rest of the show after L dies isn't as good. I recently learned that the anime actually rushed it/skipped stuff from the manga, which is unfortunate :/. I noticed that there were much less inner monologues during the latter half; disappointing to me bcuz 1. it made it harder to follow the logic, and 2. it would've helped develop the Light vs Near dynamic and make us viewers feel more invested. It would have been nice if the anime had more episodes so it wouldn't feel so rushed. We also don't really get to know Mello and Near very well, which sucks cuz now everyone thinks they're not as good as L (which might still be true, but at least give them a fighting chance lmao). The worst victim has gotta be Mello's friend Matt who shows up in one scene just to get shot at by a group of people and die. Its funny to think about cuz why did they do him like that lol.

-L is still my fave <3. The OG autistic anime boy. When I first watched I was so surprised when he died that I felt like I was in shock for the rest of the day. I'm not usually that affected by character deaths but that one really got me. This time around I braced myself for it, but its not that bad when you know its coming. Still, Fs in the chat for him o7.

-On the other hand, I remember I hated Light lmao. I disagree with him but then also the whole "I'm a god" ego thing was off-putting to me. Now that I'm older I think maybe I can appreciate his character a little more. He's still dumb tho, killing criminals isn't gonna magically make the world better. I guess that's part of his character, the way he is so naive. There's also the question of whether the death note corrupted him or if he was always like that. Maybe a bit of both? That might be what's interesting about him. Tbh I feel like the death note would corrupt anyone :O

-I don't think I ever gave much thought to the relationship between Light and L, but now that I'm thinking about it, its kinda fascinating. Like, they don't really like each other, but they're also obsessed with each other. The most joy in life they have is this intellectual back-and-forth game they are playing. When Light says "its boring without Ryuzaki" and then multiple times he's like "Near u suck ur not as good as L" like why are u thinking about another man that much lmao. Anime rivalry/toxic yaoi go brrrr.

-Misa deserved better. She was basically written out near the end when she had to give up her death note again. 2 shinigami died for her and yet she barely gets to do anything damn lmao.

-I saw a youtube comment about Matsuda that was really cool. It said he was like a son to Soichiro, more than his actual son, which made it meaningful when Matsuda was the one to shoot Light at the end. Matsuda was also the only one who would sometimes say that Kira maybe had a point, so there's another meaning to him shooting LIght. Idk I just think that's a neat detail.

this is your chance: wax poetic about an Empires or DSMP character of your choice to a fan who is new to both. Explain why I should love them. I need guidance in this new and meme-populated land.

okok this is a lot of pressure haha. Spoilers for EmpiresSMP and DreamSMP below, obviously. I wrote a lot so prepare yourself, anon

I watch a lot of empires POVs but the ones I most anticipate every week are Scott and Sausage.

c!Scott (I'll call him Smajor for the sake of simplicity) starts off the series chilling, not really getting involved with the rest of the server, and staying aggressively neutral. After all, he's an elf. He has lived far longer than most of the other rulers already, and will most likely outlive them for many years. So, the best thing is to stick to his mountains and not get invested in the dealings of mortal affairs, maybe sometimes causing problems on purpose and dipping because what's life without a little spice right.

But then, this demon comes to the server, Xornoth. He's going around causing havoc and wants to send the world into an eternal winter, but he doesn't bother the kingdom of Rivendell much so Smajor stays tentatively cautious but ultimately unbothered. But then, the puzzle pieces start falling together. The first thing that the audience noticed was was Xornoth sounded like Smajor, but we mostly thought that this was just due to cc!Scott voicing both of them and there was nothing more to it. However, then, the people the demon starts possessing start chanting in elvish. The demon hates mortals, and the elves are conveniently one of the two confirmed not fully mortal races in Empires.

This culminates when Smajor stumbles across a cave that contains the backstory of the patron god of Rivendell, Aeor. Basically, there's two opposing forces, Aeor and Exor, and both have a champion. In a previous life, those champions were two brothers, where Aeor eventually prevailed and banished Exor. In this life though, the champions are - you guessed it - Smajor, and the demon Xornoth.

So now Smajor is like. Well fuck. It's my literal god-given destiny to be responsible for defeating this demon who is technically my brother, and if I fail the server gets plunged into an eternal winter. And I have no fucking clue what is happening because I've just been here on this mountain actively trying to stay out of the issues outside my kingdom. We watch him panic and teeter on the verge of spiraling for an entire episode, and when the followers of Xornoth go to the End to kill the dragon, releasing Xornoth's full powers, he fails to stop him. Smajor is a character who was used to being the smart one, the prepared one, the one who has the least deaths on the server. But he's also a character who runs away from his problems and ignores them. Before and during the dragon fight, we hear the desperation in his voice, as he's thrown into a situation he is wholly unprepared for, and it's bigger than him going to the Cod Empire to kill their king, or assisting in other people's plans to kill the codfather. He can't run from this. cc!Scott plays this scene so well as well, as I've said before, one of the best parts of Scott's acting is how he's never super dramatic, but he's so effective in the little things like inflection to make you feel, viscerally, the panic and dread.

So after the dragon fight, Smajor realizes, I can't do this on my own. I've tried and failed. So he gets allies. We watch him, someone who has so strongly been an isolationist, learn the benefits of allies and watch him learn to trust others and watch him learn how to get that trust in return.

My favorite thing about Smajor's characterization is that he's an incompetent protagonist, but not in the way of the "plucky young adventurer". He's capable skill-wise, and fairly jaded and very pessimistic. However, his issue is that up until recently, he did not care about the rest of the server at all, and by the time he learned to, it was way too late.

Also, in 3rd Life, cc!Scott and cc!Jimmy were canonically married and they reference it sometimes in Empires. Like, Scott goes over to the Cod Empire every so often both in and out of character to kill and/or flirt with Jimmy, the ruler of the Cod Empire, which may develop as a secondary plot into the future who knows. So ty Scott for giving the gays what they want o7

Now onto Sausage: his is a story of Icarus, his hubris and ambition being his downfall. He's one of the two followers of Xornoth, who promised him endless power in exchange for his servitude. He started the series being eccentric, but not outright unhinged, but slowly gets more and more extreme as the series progresses, as he gets brought more and more to Xornoth's side.

One of the best parts of Sausage's character, in my opinion, is how his gradual corruption affects the people around him. Initially, he got into a conflict with the Cod Empire and was allied with two other people in the Witherrose alliance. They were allies, but also close friends. The fandom liked to joke that the three had sibling energy, and I'm pretty sure the ccs played to that even more lol.

It was painful to watch the other two members, Gem and fWhip, watch Sausage get corrupted right in front of them, and see them desperately clinging on to this old idea of Sausage in their head because if they faced the truth, it would mean that their friend was gone. Eventually, they do finally cut him out of the alliance, leading him to fully commit to the side of the demon. Sausage felt very clearly betrayed by this, and declared the remaining two Witherrose alliance members to be enemies.

He gets more and more possessed, and we even see the other Empires, his enemies even, slowly realize that something is very wrong with the ruler of Mythland. He starts doing more and more evil things, like killing people more, making sacrifices to the demon, and eventually helping to kill the dragon to free Xornoth. So things are good for Sausage, for a bit. He won, and is more powerful than ever. Then he finds out: he's going to die. Xornoth's possession is slowly killing his soul, and eventually, his body going to be fully taken over and he himself is going to be trapped in the spirit realm. So how do you react to this? Over the next few episodes, we watch Sausage struggle between "the demon is literally killing me" and "the demon has given me so much, and I love it", all while Xornoth takes over more and more of him. We hear him exclaim that "don't worry!! I'm still about 15% there!" while trying to downplay every time Xornoth completely takes over his body. We watch him willingly oppose anyone who is trying to end the thing that is killing him.

My favorite thing about Sausage is that he is undoubtedly evil and proud of it, but he's also undoubtedly human. If you like to watch evil characters go absolutely feral, he's the guy for you. He makes the deal with Xornoth in the beginning, knowing and fully embracing the evilness of the demon, but at the same time he knows what he's doing is detrimental to both himself and everyone around him, but he's gotten in way too deep at this point, and to be fair the demon has held up its end fo the bargain, right?

Also, I would be damned if I don't talk about cc!Sausage's editing. Every one of his videos is like a movie. The way he does camera angles and uses music is so skillful- every lore scene feels like something out of a high fantasy action saga (think: LotR). Every big lore event I always wait in anticipation for Sausage's ep because his editing truly takes lore to another level.

I'm just generally very excited to see where this series goes. Empires is such a good mix of talented builders and good lore. Part of the reason why the series is so immersive for me, beyond any other lore smp, is that they have the settings to back it up. There is a certain charm to the DreamSMP's objectively terrible builds (with a few exceptions) but in Empires, the settings help sell the plot so much.

Another part of why I love EmpiresSMP is how much the ccs are involved with the fan community. I'm sure you've seen the memes about Scott being on tumblr, and Sausage regularly goes through the EmpiresSMP fanart tag on Twitter and likes art, even ones not related to Mythland. Most of the ccs, in fact, have brought up tumblr content on stream at some point or another. Like, several ccs have said that they read tumblr lore theories and hcs and stuff and sometimes take inspiration from them. Fun fact: Rivendell's church was inspired by my pinned drawing; confirmed by Scott Smajor himself. It's just such a good cycle of ccs and fans being excited about each other.

As for DreamSMP, I'm gonna be honest here, the only person I really am invested in in Technoblade. I started watching when he joined the server, and he's the only person whose lore I keep up to date with.

Techno's fun to watch because he's like the Deadpool of DreamSMP. Virtually unkillable, very skilled and scary, but consistently cracks jokes and breaks the 4th wall during plot. His POV is just fun. Like, he does wild plans and gives speeches and some of the stuff that happens to him should be called deus ex machine if it wasn't for the fact that Technoblade is the one who's doing it, and all the stuff is grounded in the fact that cc!Techno is just that good at the game.

However, the fact that he rarely takes anything seriously makes the few times Techno is 100% serious so much more impactful. His whole character has a basis in being perceived as inhuman and being treated as such, and therefore in return trying to hide his humanity. So, when he shows that humanity, whether that's fear, anger, or genuine love for his friends, it really makes you go "oh shit."

Techno's often said not to have character development, but I'd argue that while he remains steadfast in his moral code, he develops leaps and bounds as a person. Like, at the beginning, he's brought onto the server to help Wilbur and Tommy overthrow a government; them knowing he's 1) an anarchist and 2) very very powerful. His character was more of a plot device at that point and was treated as such in the canon. Wilbur and Tommy straight-up lie to him about their plans to establish another government after they overthrow the current one, while he was led on to believe that they were abolishing all governments in the area. But he isn't a plot device. He's a person, as much as he only shows the terrifying, blood god side of himself.

After the establishment of New Lmanburg (the new government its a long story), his friend Phil joins. And for the first time, we see him be fully human with someone and we see someone treat him like a human. Like, we saw glimpses before, with Wilbur and Tommy in Pogtopia, but Phil is the first person we noticeably see he trusts 100%. Then Doomsday happens, and Techno essentially retires to the tundra. During this time, we see Techno learn to be more human, first with Ranboo, then Niki when he establishes the Syndicate. In fact, the two of them, along with Phil, canonically throw him a birthday party, which is a far cry from his treatment in Pogtopia.

Techno's development is one of a god learning to be human, and I just think he <3

He's been sneaking into these asks by proxy, so it's finally time for his dedicated session, hehe~

First impression

WUAAAGH what's up with this WEIRD LONG NOT-THOMAS and his FACE?!

His face is still pretty weird! But you know what else it is? Part of an Absolute Legend ✨

Like, man, Gordon is such a big presence and interesting character, the entire premise leans heavily on him. I'm inclined to go as far as to say that the Blue Boys of 1, 2 and 4 here are the three most important characters for the franchise (not at all to knock everyone else lmao) and they slot nicely into a Triforce of Courage, Wisdom and Power, and Gordon has Power in spades!

Gordon is The Vain One (not James!). He's legit very strong and the fastest on Sodor (which isn't just being a big fish in a small pond because that island has some crazy cool engines!) but unfortunately he lacks humility. His success seems to have been lodged in his head before the series even begins and this Pride is the source of pretty much every single conflict he's involved in.

But when it isn't his self satisfaction in his actions, it's being smug about being such a grand, magnificent Tender Engine and he is snooty as hell about it. He seems to look at smaller engines [pretty much everyone compared to him lol] as a lesser class, particularly if they're small and cheeky and Tank Engines. This may not be the case exactly, but his way of talking to them and some other things he says are very condescending.

However... as much as a gigantic jerk he is at several points, with Gordon I kinda feel like he plain ass doesn't conceive of his words being out of line. That and having to Unlearn things... he's not innately better than everyone else. He sees things in black and white. There are Useful Engines, and those who should be scrapped. There are Noble Tender Engines and Lesser Tank Engines who exist to do the tedious chores on behalf of the Superior ones. Edward doing shunting is seen as Demeaning and contradicts Gordon’s world view that Tender Engines Don't Stunt™, and he doesn't like that one bit! (Also Edward was crossing the picket line but that wasn't Awdry's concern lmao)

Related is Gordon does seem oddly dense at times, like assuming that Tenders are in of themselves a Status Symbol rather than a large lunchbox of sorts lol, or that Tender Engines like him being too heavy for Branch Lines being because something about Branch Lines are degrading. This might be all Elitist Brainwashing influence. But still, that he just takes these as The Truth means I get to affectionately call him an idiot. And there is no other way to explain how he genuinely believes Bill and Ben were going to murder him if he wasn't missing a few brain bolts in there.

Fortunately, he does eventually start to learn the important lessons.... very gradually, but the Early Gordon is a pretty different beast to Later Gordon, and it's wonderful~

Also, I gotta give credit to him for having some moments of utter brilliance and actual grasp of reality and more complex matters, like culture. (Yeah, I'm rolling with his geniune Opera Knowledge from s6 of all things. It's good!) As much as Awdry himself may have disagreed, Gordon was in the right to want a Station Pilot and the Strike was called for (not bullying Edward for it, but myeah) ...but this leads to my next point: He seems to have a mental block when it comes to Emotions.

Certainly, he's as emotional as the others are, it's not just a scale of Snooty, Arrogant, Condescending, Prideful ....well, it is, but ALSO the more mixed and varied feelings: Shame, Sadness, Fear, Ambivilance, Irritation, Anger, Passion, Amused, Delight and so on. However, Gordon is seemingly unaware of how his words may make the others feel, and even at his cruellest it doesn't look like he's aware he's twisting a knife in. To Gordon, he's being honest, but his verbose manner ends up twisting and wriggling away from any valid point like an overgrown vine that somehow links back to how [Other Engine] is disgracing him, Gordon, by association.

Examples include: Being offended by Henry's new shape (??? Gordon dude he nearly died and this is an improvement, a good thing!), saying that Edward's age and difficulty starting a heavy ass packed load of passengers is grounds to be Retired or even Scrapped, other little insulting things like calling the likes of Thomas and James Little insistently (it seems to vary if he's trying to put them down or actually be affectionate), and many more when in the hands of inept writers who have to wheel out the same Gordon Learns A Lesson Plot every other season.

Like I said in the James post, I also think he kinda poisoned the Red guy with his snooty attitude... but I maintain that I think Gordon was unaware of this. He may know he has Influence, and enjoy that, but he really truly doesn't appear to mean to mould James into a smaller, redder version of himself. He's oblivious and from his own point of view, benevolent. Which is in fact a dangerous combo indeed!

It's... a lot o7;;

Again though, if you're looking at the books and s1-s5 of TVS you can see him grow and change. He does take a while to learn the lessons, but as time goes on he moves 2 steps forward and 1 step back, then eventually less steps back entirely. It's great! And so is Gordon. A big dumb meathead with not entirely uncalled for delusions of granduer. A dramatic so-and-so who is the best engine for his job.

Favourite moment

Hm! This isn't as easy to decide lol. We all like Gordon Goes Foreign... but you know what sticks in my mind more?

Look, I’m not 100% objective, here! But Ringo’s read of this line is fantastic (and keeps making me expect him to finish saying OOOHH SHIT) and it’s also a well deserved bolt of divine retribution for how rude he was being earlier. (As long as my essay already was, he very much needed the knocking down of some pegs here!)

Idea for a story

While both my fics with him thus far have been variations of Pre-Canon, Full-Arrogance and Snobbish Gordon (and both were a lot of fun!) ...but I cannot bear the same expired horse being beaten more when the story is set waaay later but he’s still up his own ass. Please, PLEASE writers, let him hold what growth he’s managed to gain!

I think it’d be good to accept that he’s gonna be outdated sooner or later, so have him help train another High Speed Engine and take them under his wing. The Christopher Awdry books kinda have something similar with Pip and Emma, but I think a better way of having Gordon be involved would be if he was actively doing some mentoring himself, as well as being a neat parallel with Edward, whose type was once Express only but got outclassed by A1s, and so the same can happen to this big A1 -> A3 lad and he can form a healthy relationship with some bright eyed newbie (and maybe have some self awareness and try to stop their head getting too large, lol).

Unpopular opinion

I know I just said him mentoring would be a cool story idea, but in canon? He is NOT a resident Dad type!! He’s a hotshot young man but he’s also a hot mess. He’s physically large but he’s not got the Energy of someone who dispenses sage advice and a shoulder to cry on. At best, he’s a weird uncle! One who means well but you shouldn’t take his life advice to heart because he’s actually just as, if not more clueless than you!

Favourite relationship

I feel inclined to say Thomas here. Emphatically not because Gordon is ‘old’ and Thomas is ‘young’, but because they’re so damn alike and actually make an excellent, albeit unconventional type of Rivalry.

Both are self important with genuine finesse in their respective talents, both are honest to a fault, both have redeeming qualities to offset their initial abrasiveness, and the first TVS episode is centred on the both of them and sets the tone for the series as a whole. There’s more parallels, of course, but I also wanna point out they’re effectively the mascots of North Western Rail in universe too, and I absolutely love this picture:

I also have immense fondness for the Down the Mine paradigm shift! Thomas gives Gordon grief over the ditch incident and later when it emerges the Fat Controller is gonna send for Gordon to pull him out, Thomas is filled with dread. But Gordon isn’t using the chance to lord over Thomas, he’s actually so amused by Thomas’ mishap and it coming at a time where he’s been significantly humbled, they instead become Comrades and I love it. I eat it up! Paint Pots and Queens isn’t anywhere near as good but I adore the little bit where they’re appealing for the other, equals and watching each other’s back~

But yeah, as Friendly Rivals they both feel very authentic and yet, in a daft way, sweet ;3

Favourite headcanon

He still says “Hurry, hurry, hurry!” when pulling the Express. That’s a HC as I think the show phased it out, but I like it lol. I feel like my essay on him contains most of the headcanon stuff, but it’s all based on what’s shown, baybee!

hiii icha!!! a very quick ask tonight (my time) lol. I’ve emerged from the cave of exams only to have… well I still have more exams. but I did take some time to chill and go thru the blazing beachside passion event! i was soooo hype when I realized it was gonna be muku juza centric like FUCK YEAH!!! we did not get nearly enough of that in the main autumn troupe story and like I get why but I’m rly glad they’re delivering here. side note I was rly glad masumi was not a part of this event lol bc it meant that the beach episode was like. normal. ummm but let’s see. I flinched at the shirtless sprites bc I was like guys. that’s hot oil. ur gonna get burned. think it may be bc today I like made enough stir fry to feed 10 people dinner lol. overall I thought this event was real sweet tho! muku as a prince and juza as his knight was a very good pairing—feel like muku specifically would appreciate that kinda setting, yknow? as always tho I have so many Feelings abt juza and this event just made me have more Feelings… he is so <3 like something abt juza makes me want to pat his head I think. like even the way when he’s like not opening up abt why he’s uncomfy with muku and tasuku is like “you trying to start a fight with us with that glare?” I was like jumping out of my seat yelling like “tasuku!!! that’s juza’s UPSET face!!!!” I feel like that’s a really common problem with juza through like so often he is feeling like. Sad or Shy or something like it and ppl interpret it as him being scary which is like. man I get why he’s so reluctant to open up yknow? and I wonder if that’s specifically why juza might gravitate to acting, out of all things—if he’s scary and intense without meaning to… well, acting is all abt projecting certain feelings emotions ideas forth right? it’s all an art of making the audience perceive u in the right way. which is something that I think juza doesn’t quite feel in his day to day life so I like to think acting helps him in that regard… hm. honestly I think I have more Thoughts About Juza than thoughts abt this event in specific lol? tasuku being so blunt with him made me smile tho, it feels like very in character that after being literally forced into a time loop so that the only way out was to reconcile with tsumugi he’d be kinda blunt abt conflict resolution right? speaking of juza I really love his casual sprite like so much bc the posing is just very. it gives this sense of cool aloofness but when u look at it u can also interpret it as him being shy and reserved and I think it like communicates that duality well? hm yeah. muku and juza were cute tho. i think it’s interesting how they both feel the other is like “too cool” for them so they feel inadequate when the communicate with each other… it’s rly interesting bc like it’s not really one person’s fault there i think? anddd closing notes I thought the mention of kyuchan/ku was nice—clearly the story’s prepping for kumon in act 2, AND like I feel with the “citronia” at the end of clockwork heart runaway royalty citron is pretty much confirmed but I’m still so happy that my small theory from Alex in wonderland is shaping up to be correct with like the “for muku’s sake, I had to play the role of a king! it was so unpleasant.” like yesssss. yesss that’s what I want! i also wish since kazunari’s nickname for tasuku is localized as “tax” they could make a joke abt him being a taxi. since he does get roped into this beach trip bc he has a car and can drive lmao. also citron saying smthing was a catwalk and being corrected to cakewalk genuinely shook me bc I thought catwalk was correct… that’s all!

Second, you have a TIMING, i was litterally talking about this event to a friend just yesterday evening. I woke up to your ask and i was puzzled for one minute like "wait WHO did i talk about this event TO yesterday" it's incredible.

BUT YEAH FUCK YEAH BLAZING BEACHSIDE PASSION! With how much you love Juza this one must have been a little pearl.

"I flinched at the shirtless sprites bc I was like guys. that’s hot oil. ur gonna get burned." fun fact, it actually happens in SR!Omi's backstage ( [Omi's House is Now Open!] - "Incident at Omi's House" if you're reading on the Archive). He gets burnt because of the oil and Izumi has to take care of him while he keeps brushing his own pain off, it's very Omi like. (speaking of backstage if you have time/energy for it, Citron's R for this event, [A Chilling Watermelon Split] - "Thrilling Watermelon Split" , is a SIGHT. I love when Citron gets murdery.)

So really you're right and they should all know better, especially you Omi, but i guess the fact it's Omi "i don't take care of myself" Fushimi monitoring the whole group may have added some issues on the careless department.

Anyway the event was great and i agree with you so much! honestly, the play made me cRY. I think it's peak Tasuku to basically talk about processing your emotions via acting and yknow what, it's helping Juza plenty, so good for him, and the play itself was just so soft. The setting of Muku as prince and Juza as the knight was so good and represent them both so well.

AND YEAH HELP, so, when i first read this event i didn't care much for Tasuku so during that scene i was just "wtf is your problem dude", but now that i Understand:tm: him i'm just, oh yeah the guy is just super blunt because he gotta expose what the main misunderstanding is and hope the person in front of him is going to at least do something to clear it if he is to help through it. Learning from Winter! in a way. But me gushing about Tasuku aside (me?? about /winter/???? This is so out of character), i agree that still it's just that It's How Juza is TwT like, Tasuku has no reason to know that he doesn't specifically hang out with him, but like. That's the issue poor Juza's facial expression get misinterpreted all the time!! Tho i think it's really a feat that we, as the audience, can now interpret Juza so well in comparaison. He's just trying so hard TwT

It's really so good.

The Tasuku's mention lmao yes this is exactly it. Man has been caught into One (1) Timeloop and just decided to not let building resentment happen again god bless this mass of muscles.

Also agreed on Juza's sprite i really love the dynamic of this one and you're really right about the duality.

and yeah i'm all with you, i really like the Muku and Juza dynamic and the way they both inspire each other and also intimidate each other? Honestly i can't blame Muku for the way he misinterpreted Juza because i feel like his Rejection reaction is just off the charts and he himself has a hard time really figuring out Juza's bodylanguage since he basically go back to thinking he's at fault there (and tbh i feel like, the fact as cousins it's likely Muku always saw Juza with Kumon there was a contrast in personality that made Muku think it was a Him Problem rather than a Juza problem), and i can't blame Juza for struggling to explain himself especially with how people just generally interpret him. But i'm just so happy they both managed to discuss it finally and that they're able to see how much they misunderstood and how much they care for each other.

Also YEAH the Kumon's build was honestly so soft. I genuinely love how the rookies are built up in act 1, i remember getting so excited when this event first came out.

FOR CITRON YES YES YES, god I LOVE Citron in this event. Like i talked about Tasuku because of course but i genuinely think Citron is doing so much like. Like!!! Citron is always going the extra mile for Muku in general, you feel that he's extremely protective of him and that he'd be willing to do anything for this kid. The fact he got really upset at being casted as a King in Alex in Wonderland, yet now is most likely the one who prompted the scenario because he knows how much being a Prince matter to Muku and you know what. If Muku wants royalty, Citron is going to give him the best one he can give him, no matter his own feelings about it. It's genuinely sweet. idk there's just something about the way Citron doesn't even complain and probably just prompt it because he is so invested in making the situation better that just makes me soft. (Citron/Tasuku being driving force about solving a misunderstanding situation tho. muah.) But yeah of course i won't say much about Citron's arc but :3c i do love how the build up is consistant there and honestly it makes it very rewarding when you catch on to it early, which you did which is great :3c

YOU'rE SO RIGHT ABOUT THE TAX NICKNAME… between being the taxi for everyone AND the fact he's constantly carrying Hisoka around, Tasuku should embrace the nickname. "Yo "Taxi" isn't writen on my forhead" while he's carrying Hisoka on his back would be a hilarious situation for everyone else to go "well. actually." and him realizing he's doomed either way.

OH YEAH OMG THE CATWALK TOO i also thought it was catwalk, weirdly enough? like, in French went we say something was easy we do say stuff like "it was a piece of cake" so i understood the idea of cakewalk in a way, but i didn't really see where the walk came from dLFKJDF meanwhile the idea of Citron managing his way through a catwalk in an "easy" way felt so Citron that i didn't question it. Like, yeah of course being on a catwalk is a piece of cake for Citron, have you SEEN Him?? the guy looks like he belongs anywhere that could put his beauty forward. But now that i think about it for normal people Catwalk probably come with more stress than Citron probably implied. Still, cakewalk…

I remember really loving this event, i loved the Muku and Juza arc and i loved the Citron bits, and upon reread i really loved the Tasuku ones too. He acts so grumpy the whole time like he didn't want to be dragged into it but he still gives his everything for everyone around him and that's genuinely soft. I also remember getting soft that he keeps track of the silly things Citron says (there's a scene just before they leave Mankai where Citron is being overdramatic, and Tasuku rolls his eyes, but then Citron refers to it again later by saying something completely different and Tasuku is just "didn't you say it was /that/ instead". King of "i'm dealing with Arisugawa everyday, i will keep of your silliness against my will i'm programmed to do that now".)

In the end i don't have much to say about Omi and Kazu despite loving the fact Omi is probably the one Juza has more reasons to be comfortable around so he can open up more easily (and that i do love that it follows up on the two of them becoming biker buddies like man. Omi i hope you live it well.), and Kazu is mostly here for the hype squad and driving Tasuku more crazy in the car with Citron and Muku but we love that about him.

This event was really good and the feelies were incredible.

Thank you once again for being back at it on my inbox <3 it's always a pleasure to see your rambles and impression on stuff, i love the things you catch and focus on! And i love thinking back about my sweet sons, they're all so great.

4th Anniversary of EVE Online shipgirls

Last year there happened some important things, the top most are (in no particular order):

entire collection card design revision

me starting doing commissions

not long ago, me starting site development for gallery display purposes

Another was keeping a year of monthly schedule w/o slip ups, but I think I've already wrote about it somewhen in June.

Anyway, back to important things list.

Remaking card designs for entire collection (was 150 at the time) was a difficult task, but it paid off.

I got some knowledge of bash shell scripts, Python, Imagemagick. Result was script to generate entire collection (both cards and fullsize posters) almost effortlessly.

And later I started working on UI version of this, but using FabricJS and Quasar. Which is still in progress, but it can export art manually at least.

Commissions were a great way to meet known/new people and work on ideas I didn't thought of and further improve skills.

Gonna brag - with detailed sketch I can finally finish shipgirl in a single day.

If I have such amount of spare time, that is lol Grimacing face

Also I think people like catgirl+shipgirl combination a lotGrinning face with smiling eyes

And next - gallery site.

The largest problem with art sites is lack of specific filtering inside of user galleries. Flickr comes the closest one to this.

Still, you can't, to say, apply faction filter or sort/group by it.

I hope that upcoming site will help with this. Someday!

With this, time to discuss things that will be.

I hope, that just like these past four years, I'll make it to the end of fifth stil doing art, as usual.

And one thing I put aside was regularly updating header art with latest featured shipgirl art. Now is the time \0/

September coming soon, and, as a tradition, Triglavian shipgirls will be there. For now, there two of them in the plans, with third is in not-quite-sure state.

With one less shipgirl in the pack than usual, I think about Abaddon remake. Bigger and better.

Following it, I want to remake the bombers art. Mostly due to reasons of them being overpaint of official art and quite low-res to boot. When - is undecided yet.

November is AT time, so yep, shipgirls from tournament-themed or similar titles.

In the meantime I hope to deliver same (and better) quality shipgirls as usual.

I wonder how much I'll improve compared to this year.

Hey! I was just wondering if you had any advice for a first time fanfic writer? I haven't done any creative writing since I was twelve and have no clue where to start, but I got an idea for a wayward son au that I cannot get out of my head!!

My friend, I am with you!!! I did very little prose writing from ages 15-30 (only RP, which is not quite the same, since you’re only writing your character a little at a time, always in reaction to the other players). Then I read Carry On was like “I have to write a nightmares/bed-sharing fic” and just went fucking hog wild.

I’ve got one big suggestion, and then a whole bunch of less important ones.

Here’s the big suggestion:

Chase your bliss! This is a hobby above all else, and it’s something we’re all supposed to be having fun with. A little stress is good, but if you feel it’s getting out of hand, take a step back and reevaluate what you’re trying to get out of the process.

I’m a creature that needs constant validation, and sometimes that can be paralyzing—there’s a lot of worrying about whether or not people will like what I’m working on... But here’s the secret: they will.

Someone somewhere will like what you made. Even if they never let you know. You gotta have faith that they’re out there.

Maybe it’s not as many people as you wanted. Maybe you even get some mean responses. But no matter what, there will always be at least one person out there who is fucking thrilled you made the thing you made and shared it with the world.

Keep yourself and that one person in mind. They’re your not-so-imaginary friend throughout this journey. Create for the two of you and no one else.

Okay, now here are the more technical suggestions:

Finished, not perfect. Repeat this to yourself forever, ad nauseam. Tattoo it inside your eyelids. You will never internalize this enough. You will never internalize this enough.

Don’t edit as you go, just keep writing! Going back to reread in order to get your bearings or see which trains of thought you’d like to follow is all fine; try to limit it to that. The key idea is to get all your thoughts out and onto the paper/screen. Then, you can edit. (I personally am terrible at this. I edit constantly. About 75% of my time “writing” is actually obsessively editing. Do as I say, not as I do.) And relatedly...

Get your ideas out as fast as possible. This can mean many things. You could make an outline. You could write with dialogue only to start. You could jump around and write scenes as they come to you. Whatever you’d like. So long as you just keep writing. Because whatever it is you’re holding in your head that you sweaaaarrrr you’ll not forget when the time comes? Buddy, you’re gonna forget it.

Do writing sprints. When you’re feeling demotivated or like your brain is filled with cotton, try setting a timer for 15 minutes and don’t stop writing until the timer goes off. Maybe whatever you wrote during that sprint is garbage—that’s okay! It’s about loosening your mind and getting the gears spinning. Like how artists do warm-up sketches! It’s about inspiring new trains of thought or getting you in the zone. You don’t need to post it or keep it! And speaking of not needing to keep everything you write...

Don’t be afraid to kill your darlings. That is, if you wrote something and it’s just not working, remove it! Sometimes we write ourselves into a corner. Or we chase down an idea that’s awesome but doesn’t fit with the plot or mood we were going for. I’ve had times where that’s happened and I ran with it, and it worked out really well! Other times, not so much. In Limit Break chapter 3, I kept trying to cram something in that just was not working, and I wound up only stressing myself out and wasting a lot of time. Eventually, I pulled that part out and set it aside. I’ve got a graveyard document for all the bits I’ve scraped from various fics. Maybe I’ll reuse those bits one day, or maybe they will forever rot there. Who knows! It doesn’t matter. Not every word, or paragraph, or chapter is going to be good. Not every idea is precious. Sometimes you need to recognize that, cut your losses, and try anew.

If you can’t think of a word/spell/response/reasoning/anything, use a placeholder. I type ELEPHANT in all caps whenever I’m struggling to come up with something. Then, using the “find and replace” feature, I’ll go back and fill these sections in once I’ve got all the other stuff written—or once the solution comes to me while I’m in the middle of some unrelated task, like doing the dishes. I wait way too long until caving to this advice; I’ll stare at the screen and wrack my brain for an hour. Don’t be like me. Don’t let your momentum die because you’re stuck! Pop in a placeholder and carry on!

You should probably use a beta. I had no beta on my first fic nor on 5 Times They Half-Arsed It (too embarrassed LOL). Otherwise, I always use the brilliant @carryonsimoncarryonbaz. Reach out to your friend group for help—or come DM me! Having another pair of eyes (or two! or three!) look at your work is pretty much always a good thing. Betas can fill a few different roles: they’ll help you spot spelling and grammar stuff (no matter how careful you think you were); they can point out inconsistencies or things that need clarification; they can find weird word choices; they can help you untangle problem areas or push you in new directions, etc. And they can be your cheering squad and offer you encouragement throughout!!

Be upfront with your beta(s) about how much you’d like/need from them, so that they can best help you. Constructive criticism is how we all get better, but sometimes it’s just not about that, you know? Sometimes you just want someone to be at your side during the process. (Other than your not-so-imaginary friend, of course~)

But really, above all else, chase your bliss.

decoded (707 x reader, part ii)

rating: 13+ (au, later chapters will have spoilers for 707 route as well as secret ends)

notes: uh, so i started this fic a year ago. oops. i’m sure people have long forgotten... chapter two has actually been mostly done for a while, i just hadn’t gotten around to finish it... /coughs

i hope it’s alright. it’s been a while so i’m more unsure than usual about seven... and this mc... well, she’s pretty capable as long as she isn’t looking directly at seven’s handsome face LOLOLOL

“Oh, hey!”

The sound of Yoosung’s voice causes you to freeze. He’d ditched class earlier this week, so it’s the first time you’ve seen him since the RFA party. Slowly, you turn to face him, an easy grin on your face. You’re fairly sure he doesn’t know you were there, and you hope to keep it that way. “What’s up, Yoosung?”

The blond haired boy hurries over so that you’re standing side by side. Once he catches up, you keep walking in the direction of your dorm. “Not much really.”

“I didn’t see you in class on Monday… were you sick…?” you ask.

“Ah, no, I was really tired so I didn’t go…”

“Were you up late playing LOLOL again?”

He laughs nervously. There’s no doubt in your mind that you’ve hit the nail on the head, though it’s also Yoosung and he’s not all that hard to figure out. You give him a reprimanding look and he pouts at you, offering his excuse, “I...I had a really busy weekend! I didn’t have time to play at all.”

The RFA party was this past weekend so it makes sense. It was a pretty big event and Yoosung was probably busy helping organize the entire thing. Your thoughts drift to that red haired RFA member. There’s no denying that that guy knew something about 707, but despite your best efforts you weren’t able to find him again at the party. You did try visiting the RFA’s website to see if you could find a list of their members, but there was none, and hacking into their website yielded absolutely no results.

Of course, you could just ask Yoosung. Surely, he knew that guy since they were members of the same organization. However, if you asked him, you’d also be essentially telling him that you were at the party which would lead to you having to tell him why you were there. You’re not ready to admit that you’ve been moonlighting as a hacker just yet.

“Did I miss anything in class?” Yoosung’s voice snaps you back to reality.

“We have a test on Monday.”

“Whaaaat?” he whines, slumping his shoulders. “Already? That’s just a couple days from now!”

You nod and open your mouth to suggest studying together, but stop yourself before the words come out. The last time the both of you ‘studied’ together, you both just ended up playing LOLOL for a couple hours. Needless to say neither of you got very good grades on that test and as much as you do like playing LOLOL, you would prefer to get something above D- on this next one.

The next couple minutes are spent in silence. You can tell that Yoosung is sulking, at least he is until his phone starts beeping. He checks it and his mood does a complete one-eighty. Must have been LOLOL related.

“Hey, hey hey!” he begins to speed up, bouncing up and down as he goes. “That was my guild leader and apparently there’s an event starting in a little bit! ”

“Oh?” You move to match Yoosung’s pace.

“Yeah! We gotta hurry!”

He breaks out into a run and you follow after, not wanting to be left behind. It only takes the both of you more couple minutes to reach the dorm, and by the time you get to your room, you’re a little out of breath.

“Are you gonna hop on too?” Yoosung asks excitedly.

“Um. Maybe.” The truth is that there is supposed to be a Hackers Chasing Hackers meeting within the next hour or so. You haven’t really checked anything on LOLOL for the past few days, so you don’t know much about the event… It probably wouldn’t take too long to do, but you also don’t want to miss the meeting.

He tilts his head to the side. “It’s a special event though!”

“I have stuff to do. For school,” you offer as an elaboration. “But you better get going, especially if you wanna be ‘world first.’”

“Oh! You’re right!” He turns on his heel and gives you a quick wave before heading off. “Wish me luck!”

You’re able to squeeze in a quick goodbye before he zooms off to his room. Once he’s out of sight, you duck into your room. You pull your laptop out of your bag and place it on your desk. It would be nice to have a desktop setup at the dorm, but your laptop suits you just fine for the time being. You turn it on and grab a quick snack while it boots up. When it’s done you sign into your computer and put on your headset and munch on your snack while waiting for your computer to finish starting up.

As soon as you log onto the server, you see that a bunch of your fellow hackers are already chatting. Most of them are discussing the meeting you’re supposed to be having soon. It’ll probably be about the party since Code GAGA hasn’t called a meeting since then. You briefly consider skipping out on the meeting, or at least the first part of it so you can do that event in LOLOL since you already know that you weren’t able to find 707 at the party. In the end, however, you decide to stay, figuring there will probably be more to the meeting, like status reports and group assignments for any new projects. You notice Code GAGA log in and all of the chatting in the server immediately ceases. The screen shows that he’s typing and he posts for everyone to get into voice channel. You immediately do as he says, making sure to mute yourself as soon as you get on. Then, once most everyone is in voice chat, Code GAGA finally speaks, “Hello everyone. I’m sure you’re all eager to hear the results of our infiltration of the RFA party this past Sunday.”

He pauses for a moment before he continues, “We’d received information that 707 was to be at this party, however it turns out that it was just a false lease.”

You, of course, think that it wasn’t ‘just a false lead’ but without any concrete evidence… Grumbling, you lean over your desk, waiting to see what else he has to say.

“Of course, we won’t let this deter us from finding 707,” he continues. “And speaking of 707, I’ve analyzed the previous methods we used in our attempts to hack his system and I believe I’ve finally found an effective method to get in.”

This causes you to perk up a little. Admittedly, you’re a little excited at the thought that maybe, just maybe this time you guys can beat him… But more than anything you’re nervous, especially when you’ve got a bad feeling about this. You almost type out that you think it’s a bad idea, but the other hackers are flooding the chat server, saying that you should try this new method out. Slowly, you lower your hands. Even if you said something, it’d get lost in the sea of messages.

“I guess we’re all in agreement then,” Code GAGA chuckles, sounding almost smug. “We’ll begin tonight. I shouldn’t need to tell you what time. I’ll let everyone on the hacking team the details an hour before we start.”

Then he logs out.

Everyone starts chatting excitedly about how they think they’ll be able to get 707 this time. But despite your bad feeling, you remain silent. After thinking on it, you don’t think that it’s going to be as Code GAGA seems to think. You highly doubt that you’re going to be on the team, especially since the RFA party infiltration mission was a bust. It’d be better to work on school work than to wait to see if you get that email. One of your professors did assign a rather lengthy essay, and you want to try and get started on that as soon as possible.

At least that’s what you try to do until you get a message from one of the other hackers in the group. The both of you joined around the same time, so you became friends pretty quickly. You’ve even chatted and played games with her on occasion.

meenmeen: hey. aren’t u gonna get on?

me: huh? why?

meenmeen: silly. ur on tonight’s hacking team.

Surprised, you quickly check your Hackers Chasing Hackers email and find that you did indeed get the briefing email. Luckily, there’s still a half hour before the operation so you still have time to prepare.

me: Shit. i didn’t even notice.

meenmeen: np! I told them ur prolly working on school work which is why i messaged u here lol

me:Thanks Minji! Tell them I’ll be on in a minute.

meenmeen: o7

You log into the server and see that most of the other people who are on tonight’s hacking teams are also logged in. Immediately, you apologize for your absence and tell them that you had been engulfed in your school work. Since your reasoning is valid you’re forgiven fairly quickly, and a few members even ask if you want to sit out and have someone else take your place. However, you tell them that it’s fine and that you needed a break from the essay anyway. You spend the rest of the time looking over the email and the methods that Code GAGA wants the team to use for this operation.

From the looks of it, each member will start with a different method and change methods a few times throughout. Each person received a different list of methods to go through and each person is set to change methods at different intervals… The intent is to overwhelm 707 by throwing a bunch of different attacks at him. It seem like a good idea, and it probably would work against your average hacker, but…

Out of the corner of your eye you notice that you have one minute left before the operation begins. With a deep breath, you crack your knuckles and get ready to get to work.

“Hm?”

Noticing something seems a little off, Seven turns to examine one of his computer monitors. After a moment, a slight grin spreads across his face. “...Oho~ What’s this…?”

He turns his full attention to the screen. From the looks of it, his system is being attacked by roughly twenty different sources. Seven scoffs a tiny bit. It’s obvious that it’s Hackers Chasing Hackers picking yet another fight… To be honest, he was expecting they’d pull something like this soon. They probably weren’t too pleased that he managed to slip through their fingers again…

Seven’s thoughts drift to the girl that he met at the party who said she was part of the group. It had been a lot of fun teasing her. Is she part of the team that’s trying to hack him? Before he knows it, he’s already starting to check.

Whoever’s in charge of this attack is having the hackers change methods every so often, which is a smart move, but it leaves them a little defenseless. It takes him a couple minutes, but he goes through and checks the source of each attack. If they aren’t in Korea, he moves on, and if they are, he probes even further. Eventually, Seven finds one that happens to be situated very close to Yoosung’s college. Eventually Seven finds one that happens to be situated very close to Yoosung’s college. The thought of Yoosung causes something to click in Seven’s head. When he first saw that girl, she had been staring at Yoosung, making it obvious that they knew one another. He’s able to pull up a name, and though she never gave it to him, it’s easy enough to check if they’re the same person thanks to social media.

He grins.

It is her.

Seven swivels his chair a little, “...I guess I can play with them a little…”

He spins a few times before he stops right before his keyboard and begins hacking away at his keyboard. One by one, he takes down each hacker. Since each one is distracted, it’s even easier than normal. Though, by the fifth one, it starts to get a little harder. They’re probably telling each other that he’s retaliating and focusing less on attacking and more on defending.

Though that won’t help them much.

Eventually he’s left with just the leader and the girl. Seven debates for a minute who to take down first, then he decides to go for the leader. He puts up a good fight for a moment before he goes down, leaving just her. She doesn’t fall as easily as he expected, mostly because she uses a different method that the other hackers didn’t use to evade him.

“Not bad… not bad...” he murmurs, obviously enjoying himself. “But not good enough~”

“Dammit!”

You slam your fists down on your desk. Of course you knew that there was no way you could evade the great 707 himself, but to be shut down is so damn frustrating especially since he seemed to be toying with everyone today.

One of the other hackers quietly says over the voice channel, “...guess that’s a failure….”

There’s a murmur of agreement amongst everyone else, then, someone exclaims, “What’s going on?!”

You look up at your computer screen and instantly realize that it’s being controlled remotely. The desperate screams of your colleagues echo in your ears as you helplessly watch him install… something onto your laptop. Your heart freezes when the sound is suddenly cut off and the screen turns black, but the power is still on… e didn’t remotely fry the motherboard did he…? Shakily, you reach out for the power button, but just as you’re about to press it, the screen flickers back to life and your computer boots up like normal.

You’re about to breathe a sigh of relief, but then you see the log on screen. It must be what 707 installed. On the screen there’s a message from him.

Have fun hacking back in~

Perplexed, you stare at the screen for a moment before you try to get back into your computer, but it’s no good at all, nothing you do on your computer is working. You check your phone to find that 707 has installed this little ‘gift’ on every Hackers Chasing Hackers computer.

You groan, it’s going to take at least one whole night to get back into your computer.

Guess you’re not going to get back to that essay tonight.

Nov 20 Dancitron Movie Night - Star Trek: “Unification I,” “Unification II,” & “Necessary Evil”

Swoop got kicked out before the show began. It was impressive.

Although Prowl enjoyed the episodes, he probably actually paid more attention to the dominos after the show. (A contributing factor to this may be the fact that he was busy holding a tiny Tarantulas in his hands when he was supposed to be focusing on the show.)
