Gemstones Episode 2.9: Who killed Thaniel? Who is trying to kill Eli? Will Keefe ever get a place at the table?

Previous:  Episode 2.8, Continued: Macaulay Culkin grows up, the Cycle Ninjas break out, and Jussie Smollet shows his stuff

It's the last episode, time for answers to the big questions of the season:  Who killed Thaniel?  Who is trying to kill Eli?  Will Keefe ever be admitted to that family dinner? 

Title: "I Will Tell of All Your Deeds."  Psalms 9.1, NIV: "I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds."  Hopefully we'll hear about some of the Lord's deeds.

The Thaniel Answer:  A flashback: Thaniel Block (Jason Schwartzman), the snoopy reporter who was murdered in Episode 2.2, is yelling at Lyle Lissons, the megachurch pastor who wants Jesse to invest in his Christian resort!  How do those two know each other?

Ulp, Thaniel is forcing Lyle to dig up dirt on the Gemstones, but all he has provided so far is satellite church pastor Butterfield having a  three-way in the dance club restroom (See Episode 2.1)

Not good enough.  Thaniel wants Eli Gemstone, the most famous televangelist and megachurch pastor in the world.   Bringing down the Gemstones will win him a Pulitzer! 

But Lyle needs their money for his resort.  How about if he frames some of his own satellite church pastors for embezzlement? 

No, Eli Gemstone, "Or I'll do a story on your strange relationship with some of the boys at your orphanage."  Uh-oh, Lyle is a pedophile!  

Lyle goes out to his car, where the ministers he offered to betray are waiting. One is played by Chad Mountain, linked below. 

They brought hand grenades to kill Thaniel with.  But one of the idiots pulls the pin, and is exploded!   Thaniel investigates the noise and shoots another, then runs back into his house, where he accidentally shoots himself!

Lyle and the two surviving ministers hide when a car approaches. It's the Gemstone siblings, coming to tell Thaniel to back off. So this is all happening during Episode 2.2.   They see Thaniel's corpse and the other dead guys and run away.  To avoid discovery, Lyle tells his ministers to burn down the house.  Then, worried that the siblings may have seen them, he burns them to death, too.   OMG, this guy makes Eli breaking thumbs look like a church ladies' tea.  I'd call him a psycho, but I don't want to insult Freddy Krueger.

 So now we know who killed Thaniel and the other men, and I'm guessing that Lyle sent the Cycle Ninjas, too.  We just need the answer to the Keefe question.

The hand-holding fist bump:  In a reprise of the first Sunday dinner in Episode 2.1, identical SUVs pull up, and the family walks in slow motion toward Jason's Steakhouse, reveling in their heteronormative nuclear family success:  first Eli, then Jesse/Amber and their kids; then BJ/Judy and their "daughter" Tiffany; and finally -- Kelvin and Keefe?  

Kelvin holds out his fist, a call-back to their “bro” fist-bump in their first scene together, but insted, Keefe cups his hand over his, then moves away.  They're walking side by side, so they couldn't fist-bump anyway; Kelvin wants to hold hands, imitating what Jesse and Amber are doing, but Keefe doesn't follow through. 

Kelvin looks defiant, daring someone to comment; Keefe looks decidedly nervous. The romantic has superseded the friendly.  No more hiding, no more dissimulation: they are “out” as romantic partners.   

The song playing in the background is Daniel Boone’s “Beautiful Sunday”: “ When you said you loved me, oh my, it’s a beautiful day.”

The hand-holding fist-bump received a huge amount of attention from fans, with statements like "True love!" and "I wish I had a love like that."  Tony Cavalero posted it on his Instagram with the caption "Hold on tight to the one you love the most for the Season finale." 

Personal note:  This is the first scene of The Righteous Gemstones that I watched.  My partner was a fan, but I was worried that it would bring up painful memories of growing up Nazarene.  That night I was crossing the living room on the way to the kitchen for a snack, and I glanced at the tv set: a gay couple walking toward Jason's Steakhouse with the rest of the conservative evangelical family!  They were completely nonchalant about it: no angst, no hiding, no homophobia!  I was instantly hooked.  

Upon arriving at the restaurant, Kelvin holds the door open for Keefe, and as he enters, slaps him on the butt, a “goose” that is commonly used to express a casual, playful sexual intent.  In the first dinner scene, Kelvin’s homoerotic desire barred Keefe from entry.  Now it pushes him in, and symbolically into the family.

Keefe's place at the table:  At the dinner, Kelvin can’t stop grinning.  His joy is infectious, a welcome relief after his near-constant physical pain and emotional turmoil through the season, but perhaps unnecessary: everyone has been so thoroughly prepared that they could hardly have a reaction other than complete nonchalance. 

Eli announces the groundbreaking party for Zion's Landing: “I think we should all attend this important event as a family.”  Kelvin turns to Keefe, but not to ask him to come, since no separate invitation is necessary: all family members are invited.  He is asking if it’s ok, giving Keefe the power to veto the idea (he might not want to spend several days with people who pretended that he didn’t exist before last week).  Keefe nods his consent: they can go.  He is no longer a kept boy, an assistant, or a good buddy: they are equal partners, both invited to the table.

The Kiddo Ranch:  At the Lissons'  Kiddo Ranch, the orphanage Thaniel mentioned,  Lyle walks through roomsful of little kids, tousing boys' hair.  Uh-oh, does he have a "special relationship" with them?

His manager, Minister Mike,  tells him that "They're back.  Some of them are pretty banged up."  

Whoa, teenage or young adult motorcyclists doing crazy stunts.  Big reveal: Lyle sent the Cycle Ninjas to kill Eli!  So the "strange relationship" was a misdirection.  He isn't a pedophile, he's training professional assassins.

  "Some of them can be pretty nasty," Minister Mike adds.  "That's what happens when nobody loves you." 

The Cycle Ninjas want the $100,000 Lyle promised them to kill Eli, but he notes that they failed, so they get nothing.  They draw guns on him, and he changes his mind, but they have to wait until after this weekend.  He has some money coming in at the Ground-breaking Party.  

Whew, the big questions have been answered.  But we still need some reconciliations to complete the plot arcs.

he got sent via escape pod maybe but never knew that much about his species, megamind style, and was raised by his two adoptive dads Gabriel Kelvin (the one in the sweater) and Andre Kelvin (the one in the tank top)

he always thought he wasnt adopted because ya know, Gabriel looks like him, and he thought he just had a very bad cold

sometimes whenever Zack gets overwhelmed or has a breakdown he spontaneously combusts into one of his main elements

I wanna make a story post-riddle transfer where one day he has a really bad breakdown that it causes a freezing cold fire, zack is very horrified by this because he thought he'd never have to be cold ever again

his friends are able to calm him down and stuff, but now he's more than certain willing to discover just exactly what his species is

Update following Robin to Envision:

Both Sam Bird and Robin Frijns are officially going to be announced right after the season has ended. René Rast his departure from McLaren will also be announced by the end of this month

DS Penske: I think they're both staying on. It would make sense imo and neither drivers have been rumoured elsewhere

Nio 333: Unsure about them. They could remain with the same line-up. Afaik Dan Ticktum isn't rumoured somewhere else, Sergio Sette Camara is in talks with other teams, but not sure if anything is coming from that.

ABT Cupra: Both had contracts however they're both free to leave. Robin really wanted to leave and now is leaving to Envision. Potential drivers in his seat could be Kelvin van der Linde or Adrien Tambay

NEOM McLaren: Jake Hughes is likely staying on and Rene Rast is leaving FE completely. He'll likely be focussing on a DTM/WEC double with BMW. Sam Bird is very likely to get his seat.

Maserati MSG: I remember reading Edo has a contract for next year, though contracts don't always mean that much. Günther could be leaving to return to a team like Andretti or join Nissan or Envision. Meanwhile Nyck de Vries is rumoured to maybe join them. He was meant to race for them this season but an F1 seat came in between. Felipe Drugovich has also impressed during rookie sessions so he could also be a candidate. Also added Sergio as he was among the list but I'm unsure if he's actually in contention for a seat there.

Mahindra: Mehri is definitely leaving, and now di Grassi also seems to be in discussions with teams such as Nissan and Andretti. Mahindra needs stability if they want to improve but I don't think someone like Lucas wants to stay with this performance. Norman Nato could be joining them, he doesn't have too many options as he's being booted from Nissan. Also speculated could be Jordan King or Jehan Daruvala. Both have done rookie tests with the team.

Jaguar TCS: Mitch Evans is staying and getting a new teammate in Nick Cassidy. Sam Bird is leaving to McLaren

Tag Heuer Porsche: Both drivers, António Félix da Costa and Pascal Wehrlein are likely to stay on.

Envision: Envision: Buemi is staying and Cassidy is leaving to Jaguar. Frijns is taking his seat.

Nissan: Sacha Fenestraz is likely staying on. Norman Nato seems to be booted from the team. However the second seat seems to belong to a lot of other drivers. It's a question who ends up there.

Avalanche Andretti: Jake Dennis is staying and Andre Lotterer is leaving to completely focus on WEC with Porsche. For this seat many drivers are also rumoured.

Authorities now say six of the migrants accused of jumping a pair of police officers in Times Square took off for California — and the group involved in the assault is being eyed in a larger conspiracy in which the immigrants use Apple Pay on stolen phones to buy cars and pools, police sources said.

In addition, immigration warrants have now been issued for several of those who fled, a senior law enforcement source said.

The violent group is part of a larger conspiracy involving other new arrivals in the city.

The migrants first steal phones from victims and then use Apple Pay and credit cards to make large purchases back in their home countries, the sources said.

“They’re buying cars back in Ecuador and Venezuela,” the police source said. “They’re putting pools in their homes there. All this money is going back and forth. That’s why the larcenies are going out of control. It’s unbelievable what they’re doing.” 

They believe the activities are organized and gang related, but aren’t sure which gangs or crews are involved at this point, the sources said.

The gang Tren de Aragua from Venezuela is one of those being eyed in the criminal activity, the sources confirmed. Former NYPD Chief of Intelligence John Miller first reported on the link on CNN Friday.  

Police have an idea of where the men are, but can’t pick them up unless they miss their court dates since they were released without bail, the source said.

The fleeing migrants were thought to have gone to a faith-based charity, who provided their bus tickets to the Golden State, but authorities now believe taxpayer money was used instead.

Big Apple migrants are given a special identification known as a “G number” when they arrive and are placed in the shelter system “to track them throughout the shelter system,” a source said.

They can use the numbers to get tickets to travel anywhere else in the US.

Cops are probing whether the Times Square migrants stole “G numbers” from others and used them to obtain the tickets. NYPD officers realized they’d fled when investigators recognized their images.

In all, seven migrants have been arrested so far in the assault, and sources said six more are being sought.

Darwin Andres Gomez, 19, Kelvin Servita Arocha, 19, Wilson Juarez, 21, and Yorman Reveron, 24, were released without bail and fled via bus to California, authorities have said. Three more have also been nabbed: Jhoan Boada, 22, Jandry Barros, 21, and Yohenry Brito, 24.

Brito is being held at Rikers Island on $15,000 cash bail. Boada was released without bail.

Within the last 24 hours, US Customs and Border Patrol have issued warrants for Gomez; Arocha; Juarez; Reveron; and Boada, a source said.

The officers were attacked on 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue around 8:30 p.m. after they were called to the area because of a robbery at an Aldo store there. Migrants hang out outside the nearby Candler Building and are known to rob handbags from the shoe store, the store manager there told The Post.

Most of the millions upon millions of welfare colonists pouring across the undefended border would not be in this country if they had any respect for our laws, so you can hardly expect mobs of them to refrain from beating NYC police officers — especially now that they know they will not be punished for it:

Shocking video captured the moment a migrant mob pounded a pair of cops near Times Square over the weekend… The footage shows an NYPD officer and lieutenant initially telling the migrants to move along around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on West 42nd Street in Manhattan — before things quickly get rowdy as a scuffle breaks out between the cops and a suspect who is wrestled to the ground. That’s when the rest of the punks converge on the officers, raining kicks to the head and body of the pair of New York’s Finest… Police initially busted four of the asylum-seeking thugs, identified by sources as Darwin Andres Gomez Izquiel, 19, Kelvin Servat Arocha, 19, Juarez Wilson, 21, and Yorman Reveron, 24.

Then all four were released without bail.

They are as likely to show up in court to face charges as they are for whatever asylum hearing might be scheduled for a decade down the road.

One of the men, Reveron, has two open cases in Manhattan for assault and robbery. In November, he allegedly “pushed, punched and bit” a Nordstrom Rack employee who caught him lifting a $130 item from the Union Square store’s display rack, according to law enforcement sources. Last month, Reveron also allegedly “punched with a closed fist” a loss prevention officer at the Herald Square Macy’s after trying to pull off a robbery with two other suspects, the sources said.

"What the fuck are you doing here" Was the phrase that came from Kelvin's lips when he saw that woman standing at the door of the house that he had shared with you for two months, a house that, inside, he considered his own.

Not only was he not expected her, not even here, so far from Dallas, but his heart and mind had been instantly filled with an amalgamation of feelings and thoughts that gave him an immediate headache, while he thought why, his ex-fiancée, was there, wondering how the hell she had found him. The melancholy of seeing the face that he had loved so much, but which now caused him a visceral disgust, fused with anger and revulsion, the betrayal burning in his chest, the pain she had caused him.

"I came to talk to you" The girl said, with a sweet tone, casually looking in through the opening in the door.

"There's nothing to talk about" He saw her eyes and closed the door behind him, so she wouldn't peek where she didn't belong "Our conversations died the day you decided to sleep with Andre"

"But you have to take care of your son, Robert..." She played with the hem of her dress as if she were an innocent child. "You are already healthy enough to take responsibility for..."

"Is not my son!" He interrupted her, annoyed. "Unless your pregnancy lasted a year, it's not mine."

"Andre doesn't want to take responsibility!" She approached him, her eyes pleading him. “You were always responsible! You're not going to leave me alone with this, are you?"

"Why the hell would I own up to your mistakes?" He rubbed his frown, between annoyed by how she treated him and pained by his headache.

"Because you love me" She smiled, touching his chest with a seductive air "You always loved me, you wanted to marry me... You can still if you want..."

"You are insane, Daphne!" He removed her hand from his chest, disgusted. “I may be a good person, but I'm not an idiot! I don't love you, trash, and I'm absolutely in love with someone else! I wouldn't love you again even if you were the last woman in the world, you damn treacherous harpy!"

"Watch your language, Keaton!" She slapped him quite hard, close to his ear.

Kelvin's ears had been overly sensitive since the accident, so that hit really hurt, worsening his headache, while the beeping he heard brought back memories of the island, when sometimes, between his deafness, he could only hearing that high-pitched, constant, demon-like sound in his head that would go on for days and drive him to the brink of madness.

He crouched lower, dropping to one knee on the floor, closing his eyes, pain mingling with trauma, images reverberating like explosions in his head that pulsed in time with his heart.

Daphne tried to approach him, but you, who had seen everything from the inside, came out, with the look of a serial killer, to push her aside rather savagely and kneel beside him, gently touching his forehead.

"Kel..." You called him in a low voice to not make his headache worse "Calm down... I am here... Open your eyes, focus" You noticed him breathing quickly, a sign that he was about to have a panic attack "You're safe, calm down honey... Do your list of boring things, come on, yes?

"Kell?" Daphne looked at you, incredulous “Honey? Are you his girlfriend?" She laughed slightly, as if you were a small thing. "You've really lowered your standards, Robert... she's pretty ugly."

You looked at her, acidly, even with your hand on his head. Yes, she was spectacularly beautiful, her angelic face and porcelain skin, her clear eyes, her reddish-brown hair that fell in waves like a lion's mane, exaggeratedly firm feminine attributes, slim and precious. She was an enhanced Instagram model. But she was also a heartless bitch.

“Daphne…” You hissed, furious, hating her more than a mutant “Do you like being pretty? Wouldn't you like me to cut the skin off your face into strips or scalp you?" You saw her get a little scared by your words "Kelvin is not the only ex-soldier here, and I swear I can render you unrecognizable using just a nail clipper... So if you don't want to see my bad side, you better bring your pompous fitness ass back to Dallas and never go anywhere near MY boyfriend again"

"W-what?" She stepped back a bit. She was expected that her Robert would be the one with the most balls in that relationship, his now girlfriend was not expected to have that level of sadism. Robert was a cub and you were the blood-soaked wolf.

"It seems I'm not speaking clearly enough." You took your butterfly knife out of your pocket and made a graceful move before showing her the sharp blade in a clear threat of what would happen if she stayed there.

The ex-fiancée did a mini-jump before running off. You were someone she should never bother.

Still angry, you put your knife away, holding Kelvin better and helping him into the house while you heard him mumble a list of technical things, in his task of controlling his panic attack. You gently sat him on the couch, sitting very close to him, rubbing his back, holding him.

"How are you feeling, honey?" You searched his eyes, speaking to him tenderly “What do you need? You can tell me?"

"Migraine," He murmured, squeezing his eyes shut.

You stood up immediately, turning off the lights and the music was playing in the background, closing the curtains, making sure the place was dark, before reaching for his migraine meds and a glass of cool water. You approached him, watching him take it quickly while you took a cooling gel from the fridge.

“Flashbacks?” You spoke in a low voice, gently supporting the cold gel on the back of his neck, knowing that most of his pain originated there. "Panic?"

"They... are leaving..." He breathed slowly, to control his thoughts and heart.

"Good boy" You tenderly kissed his temple "How is your ear?"

“It hurts a bit…” He took your hand firmly, “Nest, please?”

"Of course, honey, come here"

“Nest” was a code word that both of you had developed during those months, when either of you had flashbacks, or when your brains were particularly out of whack. It meant that they needed to snuggle up, rest on each other's chest, stop everything you did, for a moment and focus, to come down to the ground.

You leaned back along the couch, noticing how he leaned against you, his head resting on your chest. You gently held the cold gel to the nape of his neck, while he firmly grasped your free hand, intertwining with your fingers, as if was a way to remind him that he was safe.

"I'm s-sorry, m-my love..." He sighed, somewhere between hurt, tired and emotionally unbalanced.

"Calm down honey... I know you can't control the trauma, I can't either" You moved the gel to another point on his head.

"It's n-n-not... it's not t-t-that..." He buried his face a little in your chest "I'm t-t-t-talking about... I'm s-sorry that you... that you h-had to..." He tapped his foot lightly on the couch, frustrated "Stupid... m-mouth..."

"A knot?" You heard him nod "Okay, don't stress... We can talk later"

“Knot” was another code word you had invented. When Kelvin suffered a lot of mental wear and tear, or stress, or was under too many traumatic memories, his ability to speak would worsen, to the point of stuttering, not remembering words, or getting so slack that he seemed to not know what to say. You called that a “knot”, an agile way of giving notice that he wasn't suffering from something serious, that it was just that temporary verbal incapacity. Although that frustrated him, sometimes to the point of making him cry.

"Does it still hurt?" You heard your boyfriend deny, so you put the cold gel aside and focused on combing it gently.

"Thank y-you..." He started to sob, tired but grateful "For taking c-c-care of... me"

"I'll always take care of you and you know it, dear" You kissed his head.

Kelvin let go of your hand so he could hug your waist, squeezing you, rubbing his face firmly against your chest, anguished, searching for your warmth and scent, his ropes that pulled him out of the darkness.

You hugged him too, holding him as close as you could, knowing that it healed his heart as much as yours.

School Spirits: Ghost girl, her gay bff, and their buds solve the mystery.

I'm a sucker for teenage ghost stories, as long as they are comedies, so I reviewed the first episode of School Spirits on Netflix

Maddie (Peyton List) wakes up in the boiler room of her high school.  Her blood is splattered around.  But that's not the worst part: she's dead!  She can't touch or move anything.  She can see and hear the living , but they can't see or hear her.  And she can't leave the campus!  

Her self-appointed guide is Charlie (Nick Pugliese, center), a gay kid who died in the school during the 1990s (peanut allergy, not hate crime).  He advises her to not try to remember how she died, since she can't change anything: no communication with the living is possible. But don't ghosts communicate with people all the time?  Maybe in the next episode.  And becoming fixated on the past is dangerous: some band members who died in a bus crash many years ago are obsessively performing the school fight song, over and over.

Charlie introduces Maddie to some other ghosts from various decades, notably Wally (Milo Mannheim, top photo and right), who died on the football field, and wishes that he had managed to shower first;  and the Goth Kirsten, who was murdered by her guidance counselor.  

Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman), a teacher who died in the school, offers regular group therapy, with regular homework ("write your obituary").  This doesn't get boring after 20 years because ghosts don't experience time in the same way that the living do.  He also advises Maddie to resist checking up on her living friends, as they will gradually forget her and move on.

Of course, Maddie doesn't listen.  She tries to recall events leading up to her death: first, she made plans with her BFFs, Simon (Kristian Ventura) and Nicole, to see Carrie that night.  

Her boyfriend Xavier (Spencer MacPherson) was skipping class, and texted her to join him for a smooch session in his car.  She talked him into going to the movie.  They met the others after class with the tickets.  And that's it.

Out in the living world, Maddie's body has not been found, so she gets "missing person" posters and "thoughts and prayers" in class.  The BFFs think that this is ridiculous: they should be out looking for her.  Suddenly Xavier's bag flies open: he has Maddie's cell phone!  Why didn't he tell anyone for the last three days?  This makes him the prime suspect in her murder. The sheriff (Ian Tracey, left), who also happens to be his Dad, arrests him.

Beefcake: Charlie's "office" is the shower room in the boy's gym, where he can watch an endless parade of butts.

Gay Characters: Charlie, and maybe Maddie's living bff, Simon. A future episode shows us Charlie’s high school boyfriend, Emilio, who is now all grown up, married to another guy, and teaching at the schoo (played as an adult by Andres Soto, seen here doing...um)

The Mystery:  "Who killed Maddie, and why?"  It's obviously not Xavier or one of her bffs, and those are the major living characters introduced to date.  I also hope that we have some subplots involving the other ghosts.

My Grade: A-
