Hot damn, what a fantastic book. This is Colonial Marines Operations Manual (2021) for Free League’s Alien RPG. Prior to this, published Alien adventures were designed for the cinematic side of the game — pre-generated characters, secret agendas, fairly linear plots — but this is the first in a series of open world campaign supplements (the plan, I believe, is release a book like this for every primary occupation in the core rulebook).
The player portion of the book is everything you wanted to know about the Colonial Marines for play. There’s stuff on unit structure, specialized roles (with slight mechanical tweaks), heaps of equipment. There’s a good deal of lore and rumors, too, which is an appetizer for the GM section, containing as it does a truckload of lore, details on swaths of the galaxy, the lowdown on the war that just broke out (between the United Americas and the Union of Progressive Peoples) and secrets galore. This section lays out the an open ended military-focused campaign, complete with a ship that serves as home base, NPCs and framing for particular sorts of missions. The final section supplement the open campaign with seven connected scenarios that build off the events of the seemingly unconnected cinematic scenarios and pushes the overall Alien RPG meta forward with some potentially big paradigm shifts.
The thing about this book, and the Alien line in general, that bowls me over is the lore. There is a lot of BAD material in the Alien franchise (Prometheus? Prometheus.). There is also some great stuff that is obscure (lots of comic book stories) or was unproduced (like Gibson’s Alien 3 script). Somehow Andrew Gaska has pulled those thread of varying quality into a tapestry that works as a compelling universe for roleplay. Initially, with the cinematic scenarios, there were big guardrails. Colonial Marines lowers them substantially and beyond them I can see the expanse of thrilling galaxy. More please.

Alien RPG Heart Of Darkness Expansion Review (Tabletop)
Tumblr media
For our Alien RPG Heart Of Darkness Expansion Review, we sit down with Heart of Darkness a complete Cinematic Scenario for the ALIEN roleplaying game, written by sci-fi novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska. It is a stand-alone adventure but also serves as a conclusion to the Draconis Strain Saga begun in the cinematic scenario Chariot of the Gods and continued in Destroyer of Worlds. The scenario is designed for 3–5 players plus the Game Mother and is a spiraling descent into soul-crushing madness. This is the PDF digital version that we cover.
Tumblr media
Alien RPG Heart Of Darkness Expansion Review Pros:
- Standalone or can be attached to previous game scenario expansions. - Amazing art. - The style of the book is the same in looks and presentation as the other scenarios and main game rule book. - 3 - 5 players. - The PDF fits perfectly on readers. - You get 7 printable character sheets for each preset character. - Personal agenda card printouts. - The flavour text outlying the game is mouth-wateringly good and sucks you straight in. - Any leftover characters become NPC controlled by the Game Mother (DM). - USCSS Cetorhina handout is included for each player. - The game is split into 3 scenarios that generally dictate that this would be played over 3 sessions. - Personal agendas are given to each player at the start of each act. These are a player's personal agenda and must be kept to themselves. - The determination of if a player achieved their agenda lies with the Game Mother. - Story cards are like personal agendas except a player gets one when they trigger the specific scenario and again keeps the info to themselves. - Story points are what you earn through playing and doing personal agendas and story cards. - Maps are included as a printout. - Takes place in the 26 Draconis system. - Famous quotes from in-game characters are presented throughout the book. - You get a lot of flavor text and background info so you can be confident and knowledgeable about elements of the world. - Leaves enough room for you to expand and improvise. - Your ship is the USCSS Cetorhina which is a relatively new ship and has its own stash of weapons and gear. - The Cetorhina is of the Rorqual class and is designed to collect plasma energies from stars and comets. - Quick select contents page making it so easy to find rules etc. - If you played the others then you can jump straight in. - Replayable with many random aspects and alternative routes and solutions. - Playing as a different character does change it all up in itself.
Tumblr media
Alien RPG Heart Of Darkness Expansion Review Cons: - Despite being standalone you do still need the Alien RPG core rulebook. - The expansion book is just for the Game Mother. - A lot of printing out. - Dealing with combat can be a bit of pain as you flip through the book. - No standard printout options as the screens are green and colorful. 'The Terminator RPG' is the official roleplaying game based on 'The Terminator' movie and associated graphic novels published by Dark Horse comics.
Tumblr media
Join the Human Resistance. The world is a wasteland—broken by the machines we built. Our own creations, our own hubris. Not in some distant future. Today. Now. The machines think they have won.  But there is one last chance for humankind, a secret weapon that Skynet in its infinite calculations could never have anticipated—you.
Play in any time zone—including the 1980s and future war. All the main characters from the movie, such as Sarah Connor, Kyle Reese, and the T-800 are included, as is content from the graphic novels and all all-new, never seen before Terminator variants and hardware.
The rulebook includes two mission packs, enabling you to relive 'The Terminator' movie and to join the fight to bring down Skynet in a not-so-distant future war.
Programming the Future. The setting team is led by 2020 ENnie and UKGE award-winning author Andrew E.C. Gaska (ALIEN RPG) and our rules team by Benn Graybeaton (Conan and Infinity RPGs). Art direction comes from Dave Allsop (SLA Industries) and layout design comes from Gaska's BLAM! Ventures studio (Conspiracy of the Planet of the Apes, Nike Future Park).
More than a game. 'The Terminator RPG' is not just a role-playing game—it's a sourcebook for the first Terminator film and its expanded universe. Settings writer Andrew E.C. Gaska is known for his development work on the expanded universes of ALIEN, Predator, and Planet of the Apes. Like those projects, 'The Terminator RPG' extrapolates from hardcore existing canon to create a living and breathing world with a multitude of possible and probable timelines. Any Terminator fan will want this gorgeous book on their shelf, whether they intend to play or not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In ‘The Terminator RPG’, you play resistance fighters struggling against the machine onslaught of Skynet in an alternative and post-apocalyptic version of today—the once "far future" of the 2020s. You can take the role of rebel time travellers sent back to various points in time to stop Skynet from altering history. You can even play natives of any historical time period, targeted by Terminators and trying to stay alive as a future hell is unleashed around you.
The book is designed as a toolbox to allow the Director to create their own campaigns or one-shots, including detailed multipage campaign arcs, campaign seeds, mini-missions, NPCs, weapons, detailed locations, and enemy characters.
You have the option to play either pre-generated characters or to create your own—tailored to your preferences, weapon choices, and role within your team. If your character is killed, a new one can be brought in from the future, past, or present. That new character can be many things—including even an alternate you from a divergent timeline.
The game has been built from the ground up to both evoke the tone of the film and place you in the middle of the action. The terror and desperation of facing unstoppable killing machines are yours to bear. Only united with your fellow resistance fighters can you hope to defeat them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'The Terminator RPG' features the Nightfall Games’ S5S system, first seen in SLA Industries 2nd Edition. The S5S is a d10-based rules system. At its core, this system uses a pool of dice, one Success die, and five Skill dice per player. The more skilled your character is in the task being attempted, the more likely you are to succeed and "succeed big."
The rules set has been tailored specifically to The Terminator setting. Combat, survival, and investigation are all dealt with in the rules, along with vehicle combat, time travel, and computer hacking, allowing your character to take control of the conflict with unique skills and training. You'll need all of this and more to take the fight across the timelines and survive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'The Terminator RPG' will be a lavish 192-page hardcover book with full-colour illustrations throughout, giving you an engrossing study of the expanded world of 'The Terminator'.
Much of the writing is now in the editing stage. Dynamic design and page layout has already started. The book includes a detailed overview of the future war, the history of the key characters, the game rules and stats, a hardware section (including a novel system to ensure only appropriate weapons and hardware are included at a particular time point). Other chapters will include character creation, a Director's Guide, and pre-constructed missions including NPCs and Terminator variants.
Tumblr media
This Quickstart PDF offers a 'rules lite' look at the new system and provides seven pre-generated characters and an introductory scenario for up to five players. Go give it a go!

Well, it has been something of a hot minute since I talked about anything Alien, Predator and Alien vs Predator related but this is something which I can say is actually... quite big and perhaps even downright fueling the flames of the canon wars within the Alien-Predator fanbase.
So if anyone out there who hangs around AVPGalaxy knows of the name of Andrew Gaska, it might sound familiar. That’s because Andrew Gaska is a free-lance consultant for Twentieth Century Fox and also is the lead writer of the ALIEN RPG book. As far as I know, and as far as Andrew Gaska knows... Fox has defined that the Alien, Predator and Alien vs Predator series are separate franchises and officially, separate continuities.
Ladies and gentlemen, officially... we have an Alien-Predator multiverse.
If you ask me, this is relatively great news... It means that we as fans have choices now. This is something great, something which I’ve wanted. You can now have a strictly Alien canon, strictly Predator canon, and strictly AVP canon.
However, there are some... interesting tidbits to say the least. According to Gaska, Alien, Predator and Alien vs Predator are NOT canon to each other. This is pretty confusing to say the least. However, if a title is labeled as either Alien or Predator, but a Predator or Alien shows up in a Predator or Alien book-- it’s assigned as AVP canon. Also, some portions of a story can be counted as part of Alien, Predator, or AVP canon but not to one another... For example, the Alien stories of Fire and Stone are canon only to the Alien franchise, but the Predator and AVP portions of Fire and Stone are non-canon to Fire and Stone...
That’s... a pretty interesting if not odd tidbit but according to Gaska, this is how Fox pretty much categorizes their canon as of now and this indeed subject to change.
So... what happens if an AVP story refers to the events of the first or second Predator movies, or even the first three Alien films? I actually took the time to ask Andrew Gaska this on Facebook.
Tumblr media
So... if the story mentions the events of Predator, Predator 2, Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 in a historical context in-universe through either character dialogue, in-universe historical archival documentation.. then the events of those films did occur but there are considered alternate versions. How alternative they are, is entirely up for discussion but he mentions that some circumstances of course... have to change to fit the narrative of a specific story.
So as we know, in the Prometheus-Alien universe... Peter Weyland is the founder of Weyland Corp, which eventually goes onto becoming Weyland Yutani. Prometheus happened, Covenant happened, and the Alien films happened. Predators do not exist, neither does Charles Bishop Weyland.
As far as the Predator universe is concerned... Predator happened, Predator 2 happened, PREDATORS occured, and presumably... The Predator as well. However, the Easter Eggs in Predator 2 and The Predator to the Xenomorph, arguably could reassign these films to the AVP continuity. The Xenomorphs, Charles Bishop Weyland and Peter Weyland do not exist.
As far as the AVP Universe is concerned... Predators and Xenomorphs exist. Predators found humanity and uplifted them. Charles Bishop Weyland is the founder of Weyland Industries, which eventually merges with Yutani Corp to become Weyland Yutani as seen in the game Predator: Concrete Jungle, which the Bishop Weyland narrative is continued in the events of Rebellions AVP 2010, which... links to alternative versions of the events of the Alien films according to Karl Bishop Weyland’s audio tapes. Arguably... The Predator could fit in AVP continuity, as Shane Black took into account of all the Predator movies... However, Rodriguez’s 2010 PREDATORS likely may not be canon to AVP, as Rodriguez wanted to ignore those films.
So... canon is pretty much malleable according to Andrew Gaska, but other than that... there we have it... according to Fox’s word, there’s three separate continuities and canons.
At least for now until someone throws the wrench in the machine anyway.
