I saw a lot of people recently saying they purposely skipped the entire Openbound sequence because of Hussie's self-insert alongside like Meenah being interested in Karkat and characters like Meulin encouraging it

but that like doesn't make sense to me, because if they're going about Homestuck by skipping all the potentially uncomfortable portions, then how are they going about reading the comic in the first place?

I think my favorite part of this is how those are, frankly, pussy-ass reasons to skip it. Hussie's Author Avatar sucks on purpose, always, and Meenah is textually in the wrong there. She has a very poor grasp of consequences and the concept of what is right and wrong, it's a big part of her character. It's why her whole relationship with (Vriska) exists, which is also textually immoral, is handled and addressed as such, and paints Meenah as being predatory, intentionally or not, for chasing after someone so much younger than her who is, just... So vulnerable, mentally. Honestly, if they're skipping over the entirety of the Openbounds just for Meenah's weird obsession with Karkat, then did they skip over her relationship with (Vriska), too? Because that was very solid, fascinating characterization for both of those characters. And, again, paints her as creepy for doing it, because... She is. And it was a part of the "main comic", so to speak. What did they do about that? Is that fine? Did they skip all of those pages, no matter what? What's the limit here? Is this specifically an aversion to the concept of abuse in a relationship, period? Did they skip any page circling the relationship between Vriska and Tavros, or Gamzee and Terezi? Is it specifically an aversion to abusive and predatory age gaps? Did they skip all of Doc Scratch's pages and interactions with all of the girls? Is it specifically an aversion to an adult sexually abusing a minor? So, did they skip Dave Strider's entire intro, which is thickly soaked in the fact that he's getting abused, including sexually, by his 30+ year old brother?

Everyone has a right to be uncomfortable about anything, but the author intent is clear here- Meenah is in the wrong, and anyone supporting her actions is also wrong. This kind of makes criticizing the inclusion of her actions into the storyline... Well, bullshit, frankly. Not liking the inclusion of abuse because abuse as a baseline makes you uncomfortable is not a criticism, it is a statement of preference, and with that I have to gesture towards the entire rest of the comic, because Homestuck is full of that very same kind of abuse, and it is bad and graphic every time. Criticism of the inclusion of abuse within a storyline has to be about the handling and execution of that abuse within the confines of the plot, and in this case, and all other cases, I think Meenah's abusive tendencies are outlined pretty clearly as being a bad thing. If you read her actions as an endorsement of being a violent, selfish, predatory bully with basically no concept of morality or consequences, you either are illiterate, didn't actually read any one of the pages she was in and got your opinion from someone else, or you are reading in bad faith on purpose. She is literally a version of Her Imperious Condescension, which is, like, one of the main fucking villains of the comic. Hussie's Avatar is also wrong, and you should hate him. That is the point of Hussie's Avatar. His role in the story is being annoying, weird, and wrong. Hussie's Avatar is not actually very reflective of Hussie as a person. Hussie doesn't like The Avatar. This is pretty obvious if you pay attention to him for five seconds.

So... These aren't instances of the Openbounds being written badly, they're instances of the readers being unwilling to engage with something that could even just potentially be uncomfortable despite that same thing permeating throughout the rest of the damn webcomic and also getting their opinions from other people, uncritically. Sigh. Homestuck being full of weird uncomfortable plot beats is... Literally fine. It's normal, it's handled pretty decently as a baseline, and phenomenally at other times. It's made for adult people who can think critically about these things. A lot of those uncomfortable aspects were... You know... Intentional? There's a point to Meenah creeping on people younger than her, and it's a deliberate one. Skipping the Openbounds for it is stupid horseshit. Doc Scratch already did that. Bro Strider did that to Dave and people love that guy. I ask gently for people to grow a spine. Think for yourself. Read something yourself, unbiased, before casting judgment. Good lord.

I honestly did not think the ableism within Homestuck was that bad besides some of the characters using the r slur. Karkat straight up using Autism to insult Nepeta and Vriska causing Tavros to be physically disabled, and making him apologize for it on top of calling him a cripple while trying to force him to climb up a bunch of stairs and calling him boring when Tavros requested Vriska to change the stairs to ramps.

It's clear that Andrew Hussie has probably never been around disabled people in his life, and he probably surrounded himself with neurotypical and abled bodied people who constantly mocked the disabled. And if he has any sort of disability, it's not an excuse to mock other disabled people. It just shows that he really needs to deconstruct his internalized ableism (that's if he does have a disability).

Note: I want to point out that I'm not calling anyone who read Homestuck ableist as you can like something and criticize it at the same time. This is more of an issue I have with Andrew Hussie and not Homestuck itself.

I think it's best to read Homestuck—like anything else—while deploying critical reading skills as prev said. I think one can infer from what jan says at 29:03, for example, that a mindful reader can figure out when the webcomic is being mean or bigoted:

I feel like I should actually learn what homestuck is about and check for questionable content. I get the vague idea that it's not going to redpill him or anything, at least, and that's the main type of content I find questionable.

This is a neat segment, opening and closing with pesterlogs we’ve seen before, filling in some gaps and bookending three really important things: Dave’s monologue, Jade’s FreshJamz, and the Midnight Crew. One small thing stands out - ‘He is undoubtedly gallivanting around his house in a state of barely restrained birthday mirth.’ (p.827) is a strange perspective on John, and sounds more like Jade herself. She doesn’t recognize him in the Midnight Crew comic (p.831) either, so she doesn’t know what he looks like and also doesn’t really see below the surface of his personality.

Dave’s monologue. Dave messages Jade at 23:14 Jade time which is 05:14 Dave time which means this guy does NOT have a good sleep schedule. In his living situation it’s not surprising if he struggles to sleep due to always having one eye open for the next trap. Dave clearly leans on his friends a lot, and they have subtly different roles – John is who he messages about an unexpected juice windfall, Rose is the person he pesters ‘like clockwork’ (p.415) because he can be honest with her about his feelings, and when he can’t sleep, he wants to talk to Jade.

Jade also helps Dave with the self-exploration he’s otherwise not comfortable with. He’s clearly joking when he’s creating his kangaroo rat fursona Akwete Purrmusk, but he’s still creating them. Jade has a FurAffinity account (p.834) and she’s gotta get Dave on there too so that he can start making ‘ironic’ furry art so many layers deep that it becomes sincere.

Dave – and more importantly Andrew Hussie – should not be using a homophobic slur on page 829, as it’s not in the context of reclaiming it. However. As a person who does sometimes reclaim that word I found it a pretty funny variant of the act 2 title [cw slurs if you click that].

FreshJamz! Jade’s music player confirms that all four kids compose music. John and Rose wrote their own themes, ‘Showtime’ and ‘Aggrieve’, both of which have been remixed by Dave. Jade composed ‘Explore’, which was featured in ‘WV: Ascend’ (I will stop talking about Jade-WV connections when they stop showing up) and now Dave has remixed this too. Dave and Jade co-wrote the top tier ‘Crystalanthemums’, and it is very cute to imagine the two of them trading this file back and forth and building on each other’s work. Jade is not a gamer, and John, Rose and Dave have spent a lot of time playing games together, so this media player establishes a shared interest between Jade and the rest of the group.

Midnight Crew. I don’t think page 831 breaks the fourth wall, more like it puts two or three additional fourth walls up, and man do they destroy the image quality. This image doesn’t correspond to an exact page or quote in ‘real’ Homestuck, but it’s based on the events of p.163-165. I think it’s VERY relevant that John is referred to as ‘GT’ here, which are the Pesterchum initials he would have had if he followed his friends’ pattern (TT, TG and GG). And this is happening five pages after we’ve seen a bunch of new chumhandles.

We currently know of [GT/EB], TT, TG, GG, CG, AG, TA, TC and CA. Using only G, T, C and A, we are missing seven possible combinations: GC, GA, AT, AC, AA, CC and CT (which is my initials so I could get assigned a chumhandle!) I think four of these could correspond to the Midnight Crew, but that still leaves eight unaccounted for characters. It may be a coincidence, but these four letters correspond to the base pairs of DNA, and ‘biologist’ and ‘geneticist’ both show up in chumhandles. I’m uncertain of what this means right now, but there is a laboratory near Rose’s house decorated with the Skaian spirograph. If that’s where the mausoleum tunnel leads, that might give us more information.

I think the Midnight Crew is objectively a worse comic than Homestuck. It’s on Act 1031 (10/31, Halloween) but the story is still establishing its titular characters and having them hit each other with sticks. No wonder Dave’s fallen off this so fast. But I also think this is going to become important, and these stories are deeply entangled – Midnight Crew is a story within Homestuck but Homestuck is a story within the Midnight Crew and it’s not impossible that the Homestuck we are reading could also be zoomed out to find another Midnight Crew. More concretely, the player submitting commands could be one of these four characters, similarly shiny and carapaced to WV, the commander we’ve seen.

The beta kids are four thirteen year olds, and the Midnight Crew are four suits of thirteen playing cards – so they’re like a counterpart group, the after dark, morally questionable version. Time is complex in this story but it would be fun if any time it hits midnight for a Homestuck character, the story switches over to the Midnight Crew before the sun comes up, as is suggested by the sun/moon clock at the start of page 833 – something like the Flatland MSPA[LINK].

MSPA, where Midnight Crew and Homestuck are hosted, is also the only piece of media all four kids are into – John, Dave and Jade have all looked at Midnight Crew (p.112, 327, 833), while John and Rose both have Problem Sleuth art (p.11, 224). The Problem Sleuth characters also show up briefly in Act 1031, indicating that it was the previous MSPA in this universe as well as ours. So my new theory is that John, Rose, Dave and Jade all met on the MSPA forums prior to or at the start of Problem Sleuth, giving them over a year before the story starts to form close friendships to the extent of exchanging addresses and birthday gifts. Given that the forums are where commands are submitted in our world, it would be a cool addition to the many meta layers.

Vriska Serket : An Appeal To Emotion Fallacy And Other Pitfalls

this is a more lengthy post, cw warning for sa, mentions of abuse and overall some stuff, that maybe you dont wanna see. anywhos who will what this is finally my thoughts put together in a way that isnt incoherent rambling! also this ramble was inspired by this video, so yeah go watch !!!!!! #thebestbloggerever

vriska serket, i believe, is one of the more controversial characters within Homestuck. very obviously due to her horrid actions, her personality, and well just her. one of the most common scapegoats i see used for her is her childhood and her "desire to become better" which i think is mostly bullshit. she grew up a highblood, in a world in which killing and discriminating against those in a lower position then you, is glorified and expected of her. yknow? crippling and sexually assaulting tavros, killing aradia, permantly blinding terezi. all which she does show remorse for, but well. when she continues this repeated behavior, is it reaaaalllyy remorse? i'd like to begin with her relationship with tavros and how much i fucking hate it.

vriska, aradia, terezi and tavros were all flarpers. a mostly, silly game without any real consequences or danger. of course, when you play with vriska, danger follows. vriska used flarping as a way to get food for her Evil Giant Fucking Spidermom. i dont blame her for this, as well she was an infant when she had to start feeding her lusus. it was also when vriska first found her ancestors journal, and well, she decided that's exactly how she wanted to be. mindfang is horrible, and this would be even longer if i had to describe her. but well, if you know, then you understand shes comparable to a vriska with even less moral. anyway, back to the major point. during a overly cruel campaign with tavros, she cripples him. which she very clearly takes extreme pleasure in. which leads aradia to desire revenge for the boy, with her own powers, cursing vriska to face the death of everyone she's killed, so vriska makes sollux kill her, which then leads to terezi blowing up her arm and eye. notice how, all of this was preventable? notice how, vriska's sadism is one of her major pitfalls. vriska just can not help herself. but well, back to tavros and vriska. andrew hussie all but really confirms she has a thing for him? (side note: #fuckyouhussieandyourhorridwriting)

Without any sort of right or wrong about it, this is just the way someone of her kind views romance and goes about it. Aggressively and predatorially. You could even postulate that paralyzing him in the first place was part of the entire courtship process for her... Spiders paralyze their victims... but the principle of predation applies more broadly here to romance as well. She just happened to do so to the guy she was zeroing in on for years in advance. And when the time came to make her move, he was helpless to get away. Perfectly logical by her mindset. All she needed to do was craft a clever scenario to make him fall for her, like dressing up as a fairy and enacting his favorite fantasy.

if this is to be believed, vriska taking advantage of him, was most definitely not hussie putting in his odd mean girl fetish onto two characters. but a stupidly over the top courting process?? oh and well, without falling any sort of linear understanding of homestuck, when she FINALLY does apologize to tavros, for making him disabled, she continues to gloat about it and treat him the exact same?!

i think, what i dislike the ABSOLUTE most about vriska. is that she will feel guilt for an action she committed say again, for example, making tavros disabled. who doesn't hold any malice towards her, by the way. she does nothing to improve herself. when she finds out that theres a ring that will bring her back to life, and that tavros has it. she demands and throws a tantrum for it, completely abandoning anything she had planned in the bubbles, because she wanted to be more relevant. when john gets it? she puts on the puppy dog eyes and tries to manipulate him, which he adequately calls her "dangerous" because in truth, vriska is a horrible person no matter her intentions.

whenever vriska is given a chance, to put her ego away, or hurt others. EVEN THOSE she supposedly cares for. she will always, always put herself above anything. vriska is a baby, who is constantly crying for milk, and when she doesnt get it hell will come forth. the fandom has this issue of coddling her because, to us, her actions are so absurdly, cartoonishly evil it makes her endearing in a way. and well she is funny. vriska desires to be the special, the person who destroys the big bad. its sort of pathetic really, and no, im not saying this in a manner that sympathizes with her. because she is very immature, she IS a child. but well, i feel like that can only hold up for so long.

vriska has this sort of ouroboros loop with her actions, gloat and scheme, do bad thing, get backlash from friends for doing bad thing / regret it after, feeeelll soooooo bad oh woe is me! DOES NOT CHANGE. its this loop, which i feel is mostly shitty writing from hussie (#fuckyouhussie x2) but well, it makes her such an infuriating character. because if vriska truly did regret her actions, its so mind boggling why she doesn't want to change herself for the better. she continues to verbally abuse her "friends" all who are so clearly done with her bullshit. no one can trust her, without even getting into her and kanaya, cause god vriska did that poor lady so awful. vriska abuses everyone in her life, who could possibly mean anything to her. which leads everyone to NOT FUCKING like her (big shocker...) and yet, she is stupidly oblivious to how much people dont like her. vriska knows shes bad, at least to some degree. but she doesn't seem to understand just how little the other trolls give a shit about her.

as someone, whos always been a major vriska fanatic, i really do like her. shes funny, and when she isnt being the absolute worse and most awful she can be. which is rare, but she has her moments. its so annoying shes doomed to forever be this mean girl, annoying bitch character who never matures. it really is saddening to me. vriska could have been so much more and she's not. vriska is a sad sack who hates everything and anyone, whos so vitriolic that no one really enjoys her presence. like ralph ellison discusses, if reality is what you make of it. vriska's world is perfect. she is the hero, she lived up to the serket title, she is everything she desired and perhaps more. in a more grounded worldview? she's a loser, with no earnest friendships. but well, thats what the narrative desires i guess.
