A One Mann’s Movies review of “Cocaine Bear” (2023).
Not since “Women Talking” (which I grant you was only two days ago) has a film’s title most accurately described the contents of a movie. It’s about a bear. And about cocaine. It’s about a bear that’s taken cocaine!

A deep exploration of the 5 stages of grief through the stories of 3 people across time.
A realistic depiction of domestic violence, subtrance abuse, and how it all starts beautifully.

Get In Line: Cocaine Bear Review
Pictured above is the “Cocaine Bear” poster.
So, usually I cover movies that are straight horror, but I decided to do something different and discuss this movie. This movie has an insane premise with an interesting story that inspired the movie. Usually, horror comedies are hit and miss for me, but I decided to give it a watch. Let’s get straight to the spoiler free review and hope no cocaine addicted bears are around.
Cocaine Bear is a 2023 horror comedy thriller directed by Elizabeth Banks who also produced this movie, Produced by Max Handelman, Aditya Sood, Brian Duffield, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller. Cocaine Bear is written by Jimmy Warden, and the soundtrack is done by Mark Mothersbaugh. The cast involves Keri Russell as Sari, Alden Ehrenreich as Eddie, O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Daveed, Ray Liotta as Syd, Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Bob, Brooklynn Prince as Dee Dee, Christian Convery as Henry, Margo Martindale as Ranger Liz, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Peter, Kristofer Hivju as Olaf, Hannah Hoekstra as Elsa, Ayoola Smart as Officer Reba, Aaron Holliday as Kid (Stache), J.B. Moore as Vest, Leo Hanna as Ponytail, Kahyun Kim as Beth, Scott Seiss as Tom, Matthew Rhys as Andrew Thornton, and Allan Henry as “Bear Performer”.
The Plot:
An oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teens converge on a Georgia forest where a huge black bear goes on a murderous rampage after unintentionally ingesting cocaine.
Positives:
One positive I have about “Cocaine Bear” is that it knows what it is, and what I mean by that is that it’s a movie about a bear on cocaine, that alone sounds crazy, but they have fun with that premise. The real black bear died on December 23rd,1985 after eating a large amount of cocaine from the containers, the total amount of cocaine that was eaten was 75 pounds which was worth $20 million ($55.6 million, adjusted for inflation).
Pictured above is the ambulance scene from “Cocaine Bear” (2023)

The second positive I have about this movie was the dark humor throughout, the reason I loved the dark humor throughout as some of the death scenes are so unexpected and over the top that you can’t just help but laugh. The dialogue was creative and some characters’ reactions to certain situations had me laughing.
The final positive I have about this movie was the cast as they understood the assignment, the acting reminds me of an 80’s b-horror movie. Keri Russell nailed her performance as Sari, and I must give props to the child actors (Brooklynn Prince and Christian Convery.) But this does have some drawbacks which we’ll get to.
Pictured above is the door scene from “Cocaine Bear.”

Negatives:
One negative I have is the lack of character development. I know it’s not supposed to be taken seriously, but I would’ve enjoyed seeing how each character’s story progresses since they are all intertwined. Another negative I have is that I felt that the movie wasn’t scary enough, I know the real bear died via overdose, but can you imagine how terrifying would it be to have a 500-pound black bear high on cocaine chasing you. I honestly wish they could have played up on the fear factor.
My Overall thoughts:
While this movie has some negatives, don’t let them affect your viewing experience as it’s one of the movies where you turn your mind off and eat some popcorn. If you enjoy campy, gory, and darkly comedic horror movies, this one is for you. But I’m glad that studios are letting directors make the movies they want even if they are based on…as I said before insane backstories. This movie is amazing in its own way with its over the top violence, comedic timing, and action throughout which only increases its re-watchability.

Cocaine Bear
Elizabeth Banks’ COCAINE BEAR (2023, On-Demand) opens with a fun comic scene. Andrew Thornton II (an un-billed Matthew Rhys) desperately throws bags of cocaine out of a failing plane and then tries to bail out, only to take a deadly pratfall as he exits. You might as well go to another screen in the multi-plex after that because there’s little that follows that reaches that level of inspired lunacy. It’s not that Rhys takes all the humor and talent with him. There are some good performances in the film from Keri Russell as a single mom looking for runaway daughter Brooklynn Prince in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest (poorly played by Ireland), Margo Martindale and Jesse Tyler Ferguson as an unlikely romantic couple and Aaron Holiday as an addled member of a teen gang rolling park visitors. But this less-than-inspired goof on the story of an actual bear killed when it ingested cocaine thrown from a plane is so wildly uneven in tone that it often ends up being desperately unfunny. You keep wishing the better actors (and that includes Ray Liotta in his last role) were in a film more worthy of them. There are some well-timed bits. Banks is a good director who also deserves a better script. But after slapstick dismemberments and eviscerations, it’s hard to shift gears to take Russell’s fight to save her daughter seriously. One reviewer said this film was miles better than SNAKES ON A PLANE (2006), another picture whose title went viral on-line before anybody had ever seen the picture. There’s no accounting for taste. I mean, some people willingly eat scrapple. Me, I’ll just hold out for ATTACK OF THE METH GATOR (2023).

8: Cocaine Bear
Like Snakes On A Plane before it, Cocaine Bear's success was helped along by prerelease hype due to its ridiculous title and premise. [Not so ridiculous, as it turns out - the story was inspired by a real-life incident in which a black bear ingested cocaine jettisoned by drug smugglers.] The marketing team was savvy enough to realize that social media's incredulous reaction would translate to ticket sales, and went out of its way to stoke it.
The film was directed by Elizabeth Banks, whose long stint at 30 Rock is evidenced by some hit-or-miss cutaway gags. Like most horror/comedies, it's the "comedy" part that Cocaine Bear struggles with; the film probably would have benefited by emulating the Looney Tunes sensibilities of splatter auteurs like Sam Raimi or Peter Jackson. [The title character is animated, after all.]
As it is, Cocaine Bear delivers on its premise and little else. Setting the movie in Tennessee during the Eighties (ostensibly to maintain its connection to the real event) results in period appropriate needle drops, but also risible attempts at a Southern accent. Plus, there's two different subplots about parents and kids that never pay off - as if giving the bear's victims a back story would make them more compelling.
Speaking of kids and not paying off, nepo baby O'Shea Jackson Jr. shows how little he brings to a role beyond his dad's likeness (and yet still manages to score one high profile studio gig after another - daps to his agent for earning that bump like a motherfucker). Alden Ehrenreich, brilliant in the Coens' Hail Caesar, is wasted here, as are Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Margo Martindale (who has the additional indignity of being the punchline to a joke about a dusty beaver).
The movie's popularity means a sequel is inevitable; hopefully it also means that Banks will get to shoot the one about mothers and daughters that she seemingly really wanted to make. The most compelling story, however, is the one that takes place before the title card: The true story of Andrew C. Thornton II, drug cop turned trafficker who died in a smuggling operation - but not before dropping kilos of cocaine on some unsuspecting wildlife. No doubt one of the streaming companies has a Narcos/Breaking Bad type series about him in development as I type this.

Cocaine Bear
Release Date: February 24, 2023 | Theaters
SYNOPSIS:
After a 500-pound black bear consumes a significant amount of cocaine and embarks on a drug-fueled rampage, an eccentric gathering of cops, criminals, tourists, and teenagers assemble in a Georgia forest.
REVIEW:
The film is inspired by the real story of a 175-pound (79 kg) American black bear that died after ingesting a duffel bag full of cocaine in December 1985. The cocaine had been dropped out of an airplane piloted by Andrew C. Thornton II, a former narcotics officer and convicted drug smuggler, because his plane was carrying too heavy a load. Thornton then jumped out of the plane with a faulty parachute and died. The bear was found three months later in northern Georgia alongside 40 opened plastic containers of cocaine. The bear is currently on display at the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall in Lexington, Kentucky,[10] which named the creature “Cocaine Bear” in 2015.
The film’s plot differs from real-life events in a number of ways. Notably, the real-life Cocaine Bear is not known to have killed anyone after consuming drugs, and what transpired in the time leading up to its death from overdose is unknown.
I have to say after watching this I was left thinking ‘What the hell have I just watched?’ and these days in an almost disposable world of blockbuster movies, was genuinely refreshing.
CAST: Keri Russell, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Christian Convery, Alden Ehrenreich, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Brooklynn Prince, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Kristofer Hivju, Hannah Hoekstra, Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta

TW: Residential Schools
National Indian Residential School Crisis Line | 1-866-925-4419
Following my posts about the discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children in Kamloops, BC, it is saddening to say that more have been found on former residential school sites with unmarked graveyards. As Andrew Martindale comments: who builds a school with a graveyard attached?
A reminder that Canada Day is coming up on July 1st and there is no reason to celebrate genocide on stolen land.
@junnygirldecolonize on Instagram
For background, Nicholas Flood-Davin infamously wrote the Davin Report (1879) about the American Residential School System in which he further accentuated his belief that ‘isolating Indian children away from their parents would solve the ‘Indian problem’’.
Originally introduced in 1876, the Indian Act was revised in 1884 to include an amendment that made it mandatory for families to send their children to residential schools. They were not allowed to speak their language and were essentially stripped of their cultural identity in favour of converting to the dominant paradigm. The term used for this was called, ‘planting out’ which means placing Indigenous children ‘at the age character is formed’ with ‘respectable white people’.
As I mentioned, the conditions of these schools were unpleasant and were extremely abusive. They were distanced from Indigenous communities so that parents were not able to visit as often to check in on their children.
The establishment of the Indian Residential School (IRS) system was an effort of the Canadian government to solve the ‘Indian problem’. They saw Indigenous peoples as individuals of ‘savagery’ and helplessness that they must be transformed into a citizen of good standing and as useful members of society.
Children in these schools were used as hostages in exchange for Indigenous elders to not take action about the continued stealing of their land to accommodate for new settlers. The government alluded that the education the children will receive will help ‘prepare to meet […] welcome and facilitate. . .the settlement of the country’.
150,000 children attended these schools. There are only 80,000 survivors.

They found the bodies of some 751 children in unmarked graves in Marieval Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan. Andrew Martindale summed it up best when talking about the discovery in Kamloops: “Who builds a school with a cemetary attached? Well, the Canadian government…” This is intent. You do not construct a school with a built-in cemetery if you aren’t intending or counting on these children to die.
