PLAYING: Faraway 2: Jungle Escape
Tumblr media
Interesting game. Old, but fun. I appreciate it for what it is, but it could have possibly been "more"...
Faraway 1 & 2 (I think I played a little of the first) are first person puzzle-adventure games somewhat in the spirit of Myst. I love the vibe of Myst. I've never truly played it, mostly just walked around the island, but it's whole atmosphere and strangeness just really excite my imagination. I want to capture that in my own games. But anyway, I feel like Faraway was making a very accessible Myst game.
Faraway 1 takes place in a desert or something...look up, I don't care. Faraway 2 is in a tropical environment--which is more interesting to me. You basically have paths you have to follow. You can move forward or back, and occasionally you can deviant to the sides. For the most part, the game has a fixed camera, but some sections allow you to pan the camera side to side. It's really simple, accessible, and prevents players from getting lost.
But getting lost is part of the fun.
This reminds me of Call to the Sea, which I recently played. I liked being able to move around a 3D environment and feel like I was there. Faraway is too restricted in that sense, and just doesn't scratch that exploration itch. But I understand it was trying to make something mobile-friendly. This was before Genshin Impact said you can make a mobile friendly game simply be a console game you play on your phone and it works.
The puzzles aren't too challenging. But they give very few hints. You have to deduce things yourself. It's usually obvious, but I always feel like I "discovered" the answer without feeling like the puzzle pieces were just handed to me to place.
There is a kind of story--but strangely it's more hidden than the puzzle solutions. So far every level has had 3 notes hidden around the environment (levels are pretty short). I've never found all three. Sometimes the notes are hidden in breakable vases or behind tree branches or something. It's SO weird, why would you hide your story from the player? It's not like the story is anything to write home about. So far it seems it's some mysterious person exploring the location before I got there while leaving behind journal entries. I wish the notes weren't skippable. Put the notes in front of key pieces so I have to click the note before getting the puzzle piece. If the player doesn't want to read the story, they barely lose half a second clicking past it.
Anyway, it's still pretty enjoyable. Given it's within the realm of the games I want to make and I'm interested in targeting mobile platforms, I'm keen to keep playing. The levels are getting a bit bigger and the puzzles a bit more interesting. We'll see how it goes.

I'm working on a video review of Marvel Snap at the moment and I was hoping to get some feedback from people who have played it. I've played it myself obviously but I would appreciate your input as well regardless of if your opinion is positive or negative, as long as it's honest then I'm interested.
If you could answer the following I would appreciate it.
Questions:
Are you okay with me referencing your input in my video?
What is your general opinion of Marvel Snap?
In your opinion did it deserve to win Best Mobile Game at the 2022 Game Awards? To refresh your memory the other Nominations for Best Mobile Game were Apex Legends Mobile, Diablo Immortal, Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy.
Roughly how much time would you say you've spent playing Marvel Snap?
During your time playing have you experienced any bugs or glitches? If so are you able to describe them? (I would like to try an replicate them for the video)
Do you play any other deck building mobile games? If so which?
What is your opinion of micro-transactions?
Any other comments related to Marvel Snap?
Thanks in advance!
