Applying N3 Japanese to actual Japan!

When I came to Japan a two months ago, I had been studying Japanese for almost two years. I started off in a traditional classroom for one year, then did online learning and self study for the second year. After practicing with conversation partners and feeling confident in Japanese courses at my college, I'm around an N3 level. However, I had never studied abroad in Japan before coming to work and live here, so I had no full immersion experience.

Here's a list of advice on using Japanese in Japan that I would tell to other Japanese learners visiting for the first time! Things like what to look out for and what to brush up on. This could also be helpful for non-N3 speakers as well. :)

Transitive and intransitive verbs:

I was very sad to learn that I actually did need these in everyday life. Verbs like open: あく・あける or close: しまる・しめる or enter: はいる・いれる are just a few. Especially in the workplace, saying "Class starts at 10:00am/１０時に始まります" or calling a restaurant to ask "Are you open right now? / 今開いてますか" are simple things that I reach for a lot.

Having an offline Japanese dictionary

When your phone's data eventually fails you or you're in a building with terrible reception, having an offline dictionary is important. I use Akebi Japanese Dictionary for android, and it's amazing. It includes pitch accents, lets you make lists/flashcards really quickly, and is easy to use.

Daily vocabulary:

In class, I was used to learning very specific sets of vocabulary that went along with reading passages. But now that I'm here, I always struggle at the post office to remember the word for family name, town hall, or residence card. People at offices often give directions in jargon, so if you're trying to pay bills by yourself, using the word 支払う instead of 払う. When you feel lost, you can ask for further clarification using the simpler vocab that you already know if you can somewhat recognize words. For example, if you hear 掃討（そうとう) but think it sounds like 掃除（そうじ）, try repeating 掃除 back to someone to check your understanding. It's very tempting to just nod despite not understanding a single word, and I do do that. However, when you're totally lost or need clarity, showing others the vocab that you can recognize is very helpful.

Keigo, other formalities:

Seniority and respect is the backbone of the Japanese workplace. It's important to always greet others with the right greeting depending on the time of day and whether they're also working, and to use desu-masu form whenever it's necessary. (So saying おはようございます specifically between 6-11am, お疲れ様です between 11-5pm for co-workers and こんにちは for guests at the office, and switching to お疲れ様でした whenever someone leaves work for the day... The list goes on.) Everyone has been very kind to me despite the fact that I mess up and sometimes switch to short form when I should be more polite. If you've been practicing informal speech with a conversation partner around your age, try to brush up on desu-masu and keigo! I don't use keigo at every opportunity, but it's a goal of mine to keep practicing it because it really impresses higher-ups.

Regional accents:

In the "countryside" of Kumamoto prefecture, people use Kuma-ben, or the Kumamoto dialect all the time, even kids. When you're doing a lot of listening, try to find out what the common expressions and phrases are in your local dialect so that you can immediately recognize them as so. For me, it's made things a lot easier because I mistook the -けん or -ばい suffixes or special い-adjective conjugations that Kuma-ben speakers use as complicated grammar points or vocab that I didn't know. So eliminating them as just bits of emphasis or the dialect helps you focus on understanding other parts of the conversation. And it's also fun to learn and use with other speakers. :)

Being humble

When you're with English speakers, be honest when you can't understand or read something. It's frustrating when you're close to understanding something, but remember to rely on native speakers and let them handle certain situations. In my opinion, stepping back when you know what's going on shows others that you realize that some instances are above your current cultural knowledge, or that adding in your identities makes things more sensitive.

Pop culture

Cultural knowledge has helped me more than any grammar point. Knowing pop culture to connect with what your students or coworkers or neighbors goes a really long way. I had no idea that the personality of the characters in Crayon Shin-chan were such a big part of Japanese kids' humor, or that the key to talking with my middle-aged coworkers at drinking parties was キムタク. Aside from the language barrier, Japanese people are very wary of people who present as "different". Even if you can't say some things perfectly, being excited about the same shows or singers shows them that you're interested in more than just speaking well.

The Hoover building is still quiet at 8 am, weary agents are sipping their second cup of coffee and wrapping their brains around the task of the day. Studying the minds of murderers, rapists and sadistic torturers is enough to spoil anyone’s breakfast, and yet they approach it clinically, objectively. The reward of knowing that you helped take a monster off the streets is barely enough to keep them going, but they do. Maybe even more than that, they live with the guilt of knowing that if they stopped, it might mean one more murdered child or assaulted woman. One more man found floating in the river. So they get up every day and do it again.

Mulder stops by A.D. Kirkbride’s office to say good morning and finds the man angrily shoving the phone back on its cradle with a plasticky crack.

“Morning, sir. Going great so far I gather?” he quips from his spot in the doorframe.

A.D. Kirkbride scoffs, running a hand through his short cropped sandy-blonde hair. Diminutive in stature, Kirkbride is someone to be taken seriously. His pointed features and gold-rimmed glasses convey the gravity of the work they do here each day in his ever-present frown.

“These goddamn worthless couriers are on my last fucking nerve,” he laments, gathering the papers on his desk into one pile with jerky, frustrated movements. “This is the third goddamn time one of them has no-showed. We need that autopsy report from Quantico today, and because this worthless fucking courier decided to get the flu or something, we have to send an agent down there to get it.” He sighs and sits back in his chair, removing his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. “Can you send Agent Wilkes in here, please, so I can let him know he has to waste two fucking hours of his day driving down there?”

Mulder shrugs. “I can go get it, I haven’t even started on the Marino file yet. It’s a nice day for a drive.”

Kirkbride eyes him skeptically. “You’re a senior agent, Mulder. You’ve earned the right not to be the bitch-boy.”

Mulder laughs good-naturedly. “I appreciate that, sir, but I really don’t mind. I just got the new Radiohead cassette, it’ll give me a chance to listen to it.”

Kirkbride nods and puts his glasses back on. “I guess it’s Wilkes’ lucky day, then. It’s the autopsy report for the Dugan file, you should be able to get it from the pathologist on duty. And don’t fuck around, we need it ASAP.”

Mulder puts a hand to his chest and makes a mock-wounded face. “Me? Fuck around? I would never, sir.”

Kirkbride shakes his head with a smirk and turns back to his computer. “Get the fuck out of here, Mulder.”

It’s a beautiful late-Spring day and Mulder really does appreciate the opportunity to take a drive to Quantico, even during the morning rush hour. Removing his suit jacket and loosening his tie, he pops in the cassette and merges onto I-395 South as Thom Yorke sings Paranoid Android.

Ninety minutes later, he’s parked near the morgue; having worked out of Quantico for years before securing a spot on the small team of criminal behavioral analysts who operate out of the Hoover building, he knows his way around. He first pokes his head into the office the pathologists share and, finding it empty, he moves on to the autopsy bay. The slabs are all clean and free from corpses, which is a relief. As many crime scene photos as he’s seen, the live version always gives him the creeps. A young woman in blue scrubs is perched on a stool with her back to him, filling out a form by hand. He approaches her, speaking when he’s still several feet away so he doesn’t startle her.

“Excuse me, I’m looking for the pathologist on duty,” he says, and she swivels on her seat, her shoulder length auburn hair swinging gently with the motion.

When she turns to face him, he’s momentarily struck by how pretty she is. Her red hair is complemented by ivory skin, a light dusting of freckles across the bridge of her Grecian nose. Her eyes are a brilliant shade of blue, not unlike the morning sky he’d enjoyed on his drive down.

“I’m the pathologist on duty, how can I help you, Mr.-” she looks at him expectantly.

“Mulder, Agent Mulder,” he replies, stepping forward to offer his hand.

“How can I help you, Agent Mulder?” she asks, taking his hand with a firm, confident grip, though her palm is dwarfed by his own broad paw.

“I’ve been tasked with picking up the Dugan autopsy report. Seems like there was a snafu with the courier,” he offers, stuffing his hands in his pockets in an attempt to act casual.

She stands, and he’s again struck, but this time by how short she is, barely reaching his shoulder in her sneakers. “That’s an odd task for an agent, isn’t it?” she says as she moves to a small filing cabinet and rifles through its contents.

He moves to stand beside her, leaning against the wall. “I suppose so, but I don’t mind. Nice to take a break from profiling sociopaths now and then.” He feels his heart do a little leap at the small smile that quirks at the corner of her mouth in response. “I’m sorry, I didn’t get your name,” he continues.

She turns to him, holding out a file. “I didn’t give it,” she says dryly. “It’s Dana Scully. I did this autopsy myself, actually, and I’d be interested to know what you make of it.”

He opens the file and leafs through its contents as she returns to her post on the stool, picking up her pen. She appears to see this conversation as concluded, but he doesn’t feel ready for it to end just yet.

“Ah, yes, I’ve heard a bit about this case, though it’s not one I’m assigned to. What interests you about it?” he asks as he follows her back to where she’s sat down, taking the stool beside her without invitation. She quirks an eyebrow at him, but doesn’t say anything about it.

“My findings indicate that though there is only one entry point for the stab wound, there were at least 15 distinct entries into that same location, which would suggest that the assailant stabbed him in nearly the exact same location repeatedly. I suppose I’m wondering what would possess someone to do that.”

He watches her speak with rapt attention, transfixed by the soft, sibilant S’s that pour from her pouty mouth.

“Hey Scully, do you know of any good coffee places around here?” he asks hopefully, completely changing the subject.

She gives him a curiously incredulous look. “Scully is my last name, my first name is Dana,” she answers.

He studies her for a moment, then shakes his head slowly. “You don’t look like a Dana,” he finally says.

Her eyebrows lift and he can see that she’s fighting back a smile. “Really? What do I look like then?”

“A Scully,” he says plainly, and his heart fills to bursting at the wry smile he gets in response.

She shakes her head and turns back to the form she was filling out. “There’s a place called Cafe Adamo a few minutes away that’s pretty good,” she answers his question.

“Great, are you free now?” he asks, forcing a calm demeanor even as his palms are becoming clammy.

She snaps her head up from the form to look at him with an open-mouthed expression of surprise, and he sees a bit of panic in her eyes. Not a good sign.

“Oh,” she stammers, “I’m sorry, Agent Mulder, I have a boyfriend.” Her cheeks are reddening in a devastatingly cute way.

He keeps his expression neutral, and can’t resist messing with her a little.

“I just meant as colleagues, Scully, to discuss the file,” he says matter-of-factly.

If she was blushing before, she’s morphing into a tomato now. She closes her eyes briefly and takes a breath. “I-I am so sorry, Agent Mulder, that was very presumptuous.”

He smiles broadly, no longer able to contain how much fun he’s having with this exchange.

“I’m just messing with you, Scully. I was definitely asking you out,” he admits, and her eyes go big before she deflates a little with relief, biting her lip and looking away with a soft smile on her mouth. “Thank you for this,” he says, holding up the file. “I’ll get out of your hair.”

He stands and moves to the door, stopping just before he exits. “Say hi to that boyfriend of yours for me,” he adds, “he’s a lucky guy.”

She blushes again and he takes a moment to soak up the image before he returns to his car. Tossing the file onto the passenger seat, he flips the cassette to side B and hits the road back up to Washington, finding that he can’t seem to get his mouth to stop smiling.

She slumps through the door at half-past six, dead on her feet.

“Hey,” Ethan calls from in front of the stove, “dinner will be about twenty minutes, if you want to take a shower.”

He knows that she always likes to shower when she’s performed autopsies, not wanting the stink of the morgue to find its way onto any of their furniture.

“Thank you,” she replies, toeing off her shoes and stopping by to give him a quick kiss before she moves to the bathroom.

The hot spray of the shower is a welcome relief and she emerges feeling much more alert. They sit at the table, sharing the details of their days over shrimp scampi and white wine. They tend to be very thorough in their retelling of their workdays, and Ethan gives a play by play of a meeting with his boss before Dana tells him all about a student who challenged her in front of the class and how she shut him down. She doesn’t intentionally leave out the interaction with Agent Mulder, but it doesn’t come up somehow.

After dinner, they curl up on the couch to watch ER together. Ethan is on his back with his head propped up on the arm of the couch, and Dana fits herself into the vee of his legs, her back resting on his chest. He idly traces his fingers across her collarbone and shoulders while they watch George Clooney and Julianna Margulies grapple with being both coworkers and lovers.

This is their favorite show, and yet her mind continues to wander to those hooded green eyes, and the boyish smile that played across his pouty lower lip. He was very cute, that’s without question, but she interacts with handsome men all the time at work; why is this particular one worming his way into her brain? She shakes her head to clear the thought, then rotates her body so that she’s belly to belly with Ethan, her head resting on his chest. He kisses the crown of her head and she sighs. She’s got a good thing here, that much she knows.

Maybe she should have gotten coffee with him, though, as colleagues. Maybe.

The taxi pulled into his driveway. I stepped out; his jeep was in the driveway which was a good sign. For a second, I stopped and thought about how impulsive this was. I didn’t know if he was home, if he had company, or if he even wanted to see me.

I walked up to the door and knocked lightly as the taxi pulled away. No one came to the door, so I knocked again, this time a little louder.

“Please answer Gavin.” I mumbled under my breath.

“I’m coming, Jesus Christ.” The door swung open. Gavin was wearing a plain white t-shirt and grey sweats. His hair was a mess and he looked exhausted. Dear lord, that shouldn’t be such a good look for him, but I could see the outline of muscles through the white shirt, his bicep muscles pulling the sleeves taught around his arms, and those sweats, I couldn’t look at them. Nope. That would be too much. Even his messy hair was attractive, mussed in every direction from sleep.

He said nothing, but looked me up and down for a moment, before settling on my face, his own expression showed just how pleased he was to see me at his doorstep.

“Did I wake you up?” He glared at me.

“Yes.”

“Can I come in?” I tried gesturing behind him with a smile.

“Why?”

“Because I just left your brothers house and I want to talk to you.” He grunted, turning and leaving the door open behind him. As he walked ahead of me, all I could focus on was the shifting of his shoulders through that damn t-shirt, my eyes trailed the movement lower, and I could feel the blood rush to my face, he must take fitness very seriously, the rough outline of his ass was just as fit as the rest of his body.

I shook my head to chase those thoughts away and drew my focus to the room around me. There were blankets on his couch and a pillow. “Do you have a guest? Shit I’m sorry if I was in-”

“No.” He interrupted me as he grabbed the blankets and threw them on the floor.

“Oh. Were you sleeping on the couch then?”

“Why are you asking so many fucking questions?” He asked as he threw himself down on the corner of the couch furthest from me. Startled by the noise, Lucy bolted from under the couch and ran deeper into the house. I almost asked if I could sit down but figured that may make him more upset, so I walked over slowly and sat next to him, leaving a cushion between us so I wasn’t invading his space anymore than I already was by inviting myself over. Immediately Sassy jumped into my lap and I absentmindedly started petting her.

“You’re mad at me because I’m friends with your half-brother.” I said softly. “Gavin, I didn’t know. There was no way I could’ve known that before meeting you.” I looked over at him. His face remained neutral and facing forward. “Gavin?” Still no response. “Do you want me to go?” I turned away from him and waited for an answer that never came. “Okay.” I gently picked up Sassy and sat her next to Gavin. I reached my hand back out, and placed it on top of his hand that was resting on his knee. We sat like that for a moment, before I felt like I needed to say something. I sighed. “What are you doing for lunch on Monday?” He shrugged. “Well, if you’re free, why don’t you pick me up at my office and we grab a quick bite to eat?”

“You wanna go out with me again?” I laughed.

“Yes, Gavin. I would like to go out with you again.” He smirked and had a mischievous glint in his eyes, though I could still see he was a little shaken from our conversation.

“Hey, I paid for dinner on Friday!” I laughed.

“That’s me and my mom about a month before she passed. It was one of the last days she was able to get out of bed.”

It was like you were locked in a cell. A cell that kept you in the dark. A cell you can try to escape but, fail each time. You could scream and cry and try to claw your way out but, it never worked. Why? The reason you felt trapped as the way you were was due to the fact of how you felt. You felt like you never belonged with these people. People who judged others who felt different from the mass crowd. People were born liking just the one gender and liking the opposite sex. They were just so different.

Then in sixth grade, you got a little thing called Tumblr. You began research things about how you felt. Just to see if others out there were like you. Then you found it. You found a S/g definition that represented how you felt about yourself. It made you so happy to feel like you belonged to something! Yet, you knew not to come out yet. You wanted to stay the normal person you had always been for a little while longer.

Then one day in your senior year in high school you're debate class was talking about LGBTQ+rights. Five minutes in you were scared of what you had heard. There were so many insulting words and disgusting looks when talking about it. You could still hear the insults today if you closed your eyes.

"They're just fags."

"Just chose if you like men or women. It's not that hard! If not you get an STD and die!"

"Them? They? It? Why do they need so many pronouns? Can't they just stop being so over dramatic and go by he or her?"

They all treated you at first like you were diseased. Except for Hank. He seemed to somehow understand and was the only one to treat you like a person at first. Then over more time, more people on the force excepted you. Things were great, then they sent him to work.

Just by glancing in your direction you knew you were attracted to him. His eyes made your heart speed up. His voice sent shivers up your spine and his body form was amazing. It was the Prince Charming you always washed for. Yet, there was one thing you forgot to mention. He was an android.

X-Men: Children of the Atom class reunion (Famitsu interview)

I’m taking a break from the usual Konami-related interview translations to translate this interview from Famitsu.com by a so-called “Nishikawa-kun” with Capcom veterans Akira Yasuda (Akiman), Akira Nishitani and Takeshi Tezuka. This is technically a promotional interview for Blade Smash, an action game released for Android and iOS devices on September 2018, but the trio mostly end up talking about their past works with Capcom, with emphasis on their Marvel fighting games.

A Capcom Class Reunion

Famitsu: Before we begin, can you tell us about your careers in the game industry up to this point?

Tezuka: I’ve joined Capcom in 1990, where I made nothing but arcade games. When Docomo started their i-Mode service in 1999 (an online service that provide video games and manga to feature phones), I began making games for them. Since then, I been working on nothing but mobile games as the head of their mobile games division. I went back to Capcom in 2014 and has since a started a new company called Mugen Combo.

Akiman: I’ve joined Capcom in 1985, where I mainly did artwork. After I quit Capcom in 2003, I began working as a freelance artist. I’ve worked as a designer and illustrators on many games since then, but it was during my time at Capcom when I did artwork for development purposes too. Final Fight and Street Fighter II: The World Warrior both have a special place in my heart.

Nishitani: I joined in 1986. I was recruited by Mr. Yoshiki Okamoto (Capcom’s head of development at the time) and was assigned on projects such as Street Fighter II and Final Fight. We (Nishitani, Akiman and Okamoto) look like three disconnected people, but we worked together quite a few many times. Because that, I was able to train Tezuka-kun.

Tezuka: That’s right. From now on, I will call myself “Mr. Nishitani’s disciple.”

Akiman: This is the first time I’ve seen someone admit that they were educated for real. (laughs)

Nishitani: I worked together with Akiman-sensei on many projects such as Forgotten Worlds, Final Fight and Street Fighter II. He used to draw anything I would ask him out of my own self-indulgence. I made him redo quite a few stuff a lot, so I was truly sorry for him back then.

Akiman: That’s alright.

Nishitani: I’ve never seen the process of someone actually drawing until I’ve joined Capcom. When I saw Akiman’s work, I thought “so this is how you draw”. At the time I was what you would call “pure” and didn’t know the difficulty of actually illustrating. I would have opinions like “since this is for a game, not doing this would be a bad idea“, without considering factors such as time and skill, and Akiman-sensei would do it all. In retrospect, I was pretty selfish back then.

Akiman: At the time I thought Nishitani-san was truly a genius. He joined Capcom as soon as he graduated high school at the age of 18. If Okamoto-san was like Emperor Liu Bei (TL’s note: a historical character from China’s three kingdoms period), then Nishitani-san is like Zhuge Liang, a person who quickly rose to the ranks of game development. I was 21 at the time and I was taking orders from a newcomer who was three years younger than me. (laughs) But because he was pleasant to work with, I never really felt offended taking orders from him. Among all the developers within Capcom, he’s the one who could be said was the first person who actually knew anything about video games.

Tezuka: As soon as I’ve joined Capcom, Okamoto-san told me “Nishitani knows all the answers to game development, so ask him if you’re ever in doubt”.

Akiman: That’s because he’s a genius. He’s a God. Personally I think Okamoto-san was the one brought the logic of videogames to Capcom, but it was Nishitani-san who perfected it. It’s true. Whenever we had doubts, he always answered all of our questions. He would always come up with an answer as soon as you would ask him.

Tezuka: I though Nishitani-san’s planning document for Street Fighter II was truly amazing. After development ended, everything came out exactly as it was documented on the plan.

Nishitani: I’m too embarrassed to just retired. (laughs) That’s why I formed my current company, Arika after leaving Capcom.

The Development Environment At The Time

Famitsu: When did Tezuka-san and Nishitani-san started working together?

Nishitani: It was during Marvel Super Heroes. Although it was developed a bit later, we started planning it around the same time we were working on X-Men: Children of the Atom. Although the development team was different, working with Tezuka-kun almost identical to working with the X-Men COTA team.

Tezuka: Before that I met Nishitani-san right after joining the company, just before he started working on Street Fighter II. Since Nishitani-san is a genius, he often listens to other people’s stories. At the time he was making Street Fighter II, I was working on another game titled 3 Wonders on the same floor. Since Nishitani-san’s desk was next to mine, I would often overhear him talking with the other staff members. I thought “that was amazing”, I could just ask them for advice. I would immediately evaluate the advice from the staff members and simply reply it with a “that’s ok”. It created the impression that people who wanted games to be interesting were somehow greedy.

Nishitani: Do you remember the discussions we had about the buttons in Street Fighter II?

Tezuka: I remember. It was shortly after I’ve joined the company. During the development of Street Fighter II, I saw it wasn’t using the same punching pads that the first Street Fighter uses. I told Nishitani-san “why aren’t you using punching pads like in SF1? I really liked those.” (laughs) In retrospect, Street Fighter II wouldn’t had been possible with such punching pads, but at the time Nishitani-san would have still consider such a viewpoint from a foolish newcomer.

Famitsu: Changing the subject to Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel characters are pretty popular now thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but back then most of their characters were still relatively obscure. Who was it that came up with the idea of making a Marvel fighting game?

Nishitani: Indeed, who was it?

Akiman: I think it was Akitomo-kun.

Tezuka: It was Akitomo-kun’s fault.

Nishitani: Ah, Akitomo-kun...

Famitsu: Who is Akitomo-kun?

Nishita: He was an employee at the time, Katsuya Akitomo. He now works as a translator and a writer for model kits.

Akiman: He is an expert in American comic books and is pretty fluent in English. I think he actually translates comic books now. Prior to making X-Men COTA, Capcom made an arcade game based on The Punisher, another Marvel property. Around that period, Akitomo-kun began proselytizing to the development team about how the X-Men were interesting.

Tezuka: We’ve even assembled a study group on the subject of the X-Men.

Akiman: Because of that, there was feeling in the air at Capcom that we needed to make an X-Men game.

Famitsu: I see. Akiman-san, what is the most impressive memories of working together with Tezuka-san?

Akiman: The dancing during karaoke.

Nishitani: The karaoke was pretty impressive.

Akiman: That was the most impressive thing outside work. (laughs)

Tezuka: Ah! There was that time when the three of us shaved our heads.

Akiman: Yeah. Did something bad happened to us back then?

Tezuka: Not really. I was talking to Nishitani-san and he told me that he was in the mood for shaving his head for once in his life, and you (Akiman-san) were there working on your day off, so we decided to shave our heads together.

Akiman: Now I remember. (laughs)

Nishitani: I was pretty angry at the time. I just shaved my head and suddenly I had to do many interviews for Street Fighter II.

Tezuka: I was also angry that I got Nishitani-san involved with the whole head-shaving business. But you were indifferent to it.

Famitsu: That was pretty embarrassing. Nishitani-san, what was your biggest memory of working with Tezuka-san?

Nishitani: Since I’ve joined Capcom at the age of 18, everyone who joined afterwards was older than me at first. But it was the year when Tezuka-kun joined the company that I was able to handle the other staff members in a frank matter. My seniors became scared of me because of that. (wry smile)

Secret Stories Behind the Development of Capcom/Marvel Games

Famitsu: The three of you have been involved in making fighting games for a long time. What is the most important point to keep in mind when making a game?

Nishitani: I’ve talked a lot about this with Tezuka-kun, but I’m more on a theoretical side. I think about making games starting with a theory. While that’s important, l also think that factors such as a sense of excitement, coolness and fun are also important when it comes to arcade games. I’m the type who completely ignores those sort of things. Akiman-san would often say “I want to play as this kind of character because he seems cool” and I did not understand why at first. Strength is more important than coolness. I come from a place where appearance was of secondary importance, so I thought it wasn’t important to take that into consideration.

Akiman: Zangief’s design for example, was initially a lot more slimmer.

Nishitani: That’s right. Since I wanted to emphasize his strength, I thought Zangief should be a lot harder and more musclebound. So I asked Akiman-san to make him bigger.

Tezuka: With the Juggernaut, he was ridiculously big.

Nishitani: He really was big. We overdid it and the people at Marvel got mad at us.

Akiman: Even I thought we overdid it back then.

Nishitani: Originally the Juggernaut was just like how he appeared in the comics, but then we thought he needed to be bigger! (laughs)

Famitsu: Akiman-san, did you ever have any issues and such with your own work?

Akiman: I used to be a fan of martial arts manga such as Fist of the North Star or Karate Baka Ichidai. I was designing under the mentality of bringing such characters to a video game. Of course, if you simply copy them, you only end up with a shallow imitation. So I was incorporating my favorite essences from all sorts of manga bit by bit and then I would emphasize the freshness. Older games were, to be honest, not very refreshing. You could have a sensible premise, but it’s not really refreshing if all you’re doing is simply attacking the bad guys here and there. Wouldn’t it be more fun to fully obliterate the enemies instead? I was thinking more about how to bring out a sense of exhilaration when moving rather than simply thinking about the gameplay. In other words, I wonder if I caused any trouble in that regard.

Nishitani: It’s the same story for me. Players might be looking for cool graphics, but there won’t be any exhilaration if the gameplay is bad.

Akiman: Now I remember. There was something I wanted to put in a game and at the time I consulted Nishitani-san, asking him “I made something like this, but I wonder how the gameplay will turn out”, and he replied “there’s nothing I cannot modify in some form.”

Nishitani: Perhaps I exaggerated a bit at the time. Tezuka-kun said earlier that I would often listen to other people’s opinions, but I really listened to everything. In an environment where anything can be asked, designers like Akiman-san can hone their skills and the game will improve tremendously. Otherwise, all the bad aspects of gameplay and such will come to me.

Tezuka: When it comes to adjustments, Nishitani-san was truly a risk-taker. He would say “it’s alright, I could adjust any game.”

Akiman: That’s why he’s amazing. When it comes to game development, it is no exaggeration to say that working with Nishitani-san was something else.

Famitsu: What about you, Tezuka-san?

Tezuka: Unlike the other two, I’m not very skilled at videogames. Because of that, I wanted to make games with the concept that even unskilled players can enjoy. A Marvel fighting game like X-Men COTA isn’t about coming up with an elaborate strategy like a typical Street Fighter, but it’s more about having that feeling of exhilaration. If you only make a game about challenging an opponent in a rather stoic matter, I think it will gradually have less people playing. Our continuing conviction is to make a game that is fun to touch and play.

Famitsu: By the way, how was the character roster was determined in those Marvel games at the time?

Nishitani: Basically we had discussions with Marvel. If there was someone we wanted to use, we would negotiate with them for their approval.

Tezuka: The rest was trying to fit the characters into the play mechanics we wanted to create. But because Marvel was one of the largest comic book company, we naturally wanted to use their most recognizable characters. However, if you can’t tell a character’s nature from their appearance, then you wouldn’t know what kind of technique they would use if you put them into a game. Therefore, the appearance of a character is pretty important.

Akiman: Back then I was in charge of drawing the standing poses and animation, but since the number of animation frames we were capable of outputting increased during that period, rivalries broke out within the company.

Famitsu: What do you mean?

Akiman: We began competing over how many frames we could use for a character’s standing animation. (laughs). There was a character created by a certain staff member whose standing pose was so amazingly animated, even his fingers moved. When everyone saw that, everyone, including myself, increased the number of frames in the standing poses they were working on so they wouldn’t lose to this particular staff member. (laughs)

Tezuka: The presentation also became flashier and flashier. Since it’s a game about a battle between superpowered beings, we had no choice but to make it flashy.

Akiman: For us, X-Men and its sequels felt like they were the legitimate successors of Street Fighter II.

Tezuka: Didn’t Nishitani-san originally said that he had to decide between working Street Fighter III or X-Men?

Nishitani: I really didn’t had any desire to make a Street Fighter III. I think the game would’ve been too similar to II if I was the one who ended up making it. But with a fighting game starring superbeings like the ones in X-Men, you can expand your frame of ideas and I think anything can be possible. Ultimately, Ryu and Ken ended up fighting like superbeings themselves in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, but I don’t think a battle like the ones in X-Men would’ve been possible with the mentality of those days.

Tezuka: I was pretty shocked when I saw the supermoves for the first time. Since the screen was full of projectiles, I thought it was impossible to avoid them. (laughs)

Blade Smash: A Game For Action Novices

Famitsu: The plan for interview was derived from Blade Smash, a smartphone game developed by Tezuka-san. Since you played Blade Smash in advance, can you give us your honest impressions?

Nishitani: The controls were pretty easy to use. When I was looking at the game at first, I thought the tempo could’ve been improved, but I no longer felt that after actually playing it. It felt pretty good to move such energetic characters. You could play a match without having to worry about unnecessary things like special move commands.

Tezuka: Thanks! Since Blade Smash is a smartphone game, I designed it so that people who aren’t skilled at action games could enjoy it. There are plans to add more technical-focused characters in the future, so I think the more skilled players can sense the response if they used those.

Akiman: The movement and effects are pretty good. It’s a good game that you play competitively in a very straightfoward sense.

Famitsu: One of the characters appearing Blade Smash named Kiwame was designed by Akiman-san. I wonder what was the process of coming up with her design.

Tezuka: I simply asked Akiman-san directly and he complied with my request.

Akiman: Since it was a request from Tezuka-kun, I felt like I had to listen to him.

Tezuka: Even during the days of Power Stone, you would always do my requests.

Akiman: It felt good to have a job. (laughs) Every time I talked to Tezuka-kun about the past, flowers blossoming comes to my mind and when we’re done talking, it gives me the urge to work again and say “I might do it.”

Famitsu: What kind of character did you intend Kiwame to be when you were coming up with her design?

Akiman: Since he requested for a karate girl, I imagined someone who would be the daughter of Mas Oyama, wearing a karate gi. Didn’t Mas Oyama used to seclude himself in the mountains to train in karate. If he secluded himself in a mountain, then his hair must’ve been very unkempt. Therefore, I decided that Kiwame-chan must also have unkempt hair. However, because she was originally a beautiful girl, she has sparkling eyes.

Tezuka: Since Akiman-san was the person who came up with Chun-Li, I thought he would make another Chinese kung-fu girl at first, but then we decided for a karate girl instead for something different.

Famitsu: I see. I would like to ask more details about the making of Blade Smash. How long did the game took to be made since development started.

Tezuka: Around three years ago. We’re still undergoing development.

Famitsu: The vs. genre has been spreading on smartphones lately, but there weren’t that many games in that genre for smartphone three years ago, wasn’t there?

Tezuka: That’s right Back then there many games that were simply about touching the screen, but I thought games that would require skill would end up being more prevalent. I wanted to create a fun game that is easy to control, but when it comes to serious competitive fighting games are not very compatible with smartphones. Therefore, the development of the game started under the idea of lowering the threshold of fighting games.

However, Tezuka-kun has the technology and know-how that makes him come up with something interesting.

Akiman: The match I’ve played was pretty fun, so I think I might download it once it’s released.

Nishitani: Indeed. Once the game is released, I wish everyone will try it out . You will feel something that will make you think “ah!”.

Famitsu: Nishitani-san, Akiman-san! Please tell us what you thought of today’s discussion?

Nishitani: It was fun to had this reunion after such a long time. (laughs)

Akiman: I thought it was good to talk about the past. Since I’m not the type who goes outside very often, I thought it was fun to talk with everyone after not seeing them for such a while.

Tezuka:Everyone has since drifted apart, so I rarely get any chance to meet up with them. I want to gather the other staff members and do an X-Men reunion.

Aside of those, I obtain such a large number of data to suffice my wants and needs or in short, my thirst like downloading pictures of everything I imagine and wanted. As I remember, those are images from the Divergent movie and other beautiful girls I saw in the image’s sites. I am really sure that our school Wi-Fi plays a big role to this bad habit. The habit continues and increase in the higher years especially when I reached Grade 10. Where most of our activities and moments happened is captured and recorded. From quizzes, performance, group pictures, group bonding, relationships, the school itself, awarding, people and many more are all captured. When higher years came, obsession in taking pictures and downloading media takes a slow improvement. Maybe, this is because of my education focus motive and new lifestyle. Senior High School years to me is projects and school performance focused because of the need of time and heavy tasks. Also, my phone got broken because it falls to a hard surface ground and needed to be fixed to be used again and I am actually defining this as the main reasons why I made my bad habits rarely. After that scene, my focus shifted to the usage of Facebook where I honestly revealed that I get addicted with.

I really feel and understand **torontoluck **of her habit in taking pictures time by time. Also, I get hooked with what Digital Organizer Daina Makinson said that “the more photos you have, the harder they are to find.” She is totally right I experience this when my teacher asks me to send her the photos happened on the day we have the activity and unfortunately it has months passed, and I have thousands of photos to scroll and look at it each by each. But, of all those bad digital habits I’m glad that I did not fail with my subjects but just get have a hard time in complying each.

As I remembered, infobesity is also known as Information Overload and as what the people experience in the video, yes, I have suffered with it. Now, I am working on it to manage the information I have absorbed.

It started in my recent years in high school, but not that worst as the people in the video have experienced, when I am hunger with knowledge just to satisfy people’s expectation. I studied a lot of things, I read a lot of books and information and I watched lots of informative videos. Because of my eagerness to gain knowledge, I never noticed that I am spending my whole time with it, I sleep every 1 AM in the morning and skipped some of my meals. Even my mom scolded me about it. After a week of doing it, I felt confused and always distracted of the things I always say, and I have observed it like what happened to me during my reporting in class, I am reading my visual aid, but I can’t explain it well and I get stammered even if I am not used to it. So, then I conclude that I may have an Information Overload where my brain can’t process and absorb the information because it is simultaneous, no breaks, and as a result confusion eaten me with sleepless nights.

Speaking in technology, I guess just last month, I experience information overload in my Gmail account when I subscribe to more than a hundred of pages and channels which result to a bunch of emails, I received every day. The worst here is I get a hard time in finding the emails of my teacher to me and the important emails as well. So, after my task and projects I decided to clean my Gmail and unsubscribe to most of the sites, pages and channels.

I am really sure that I need a digital diet. A way of consuming the technology in a healthy way. I need to be wise now and be smarter to face this struggle and disconnect with the bad data habit. I need to take and absorb these technologies in a healthy way where I cannot harm myself, my relationship with my family and friends, and my good habits. I need also to lessen this engagement in technologies and social media sites. Actually, I am doing it a long time ago but in a gradual way to slowly absorb the change by my body. I lessen the time I spend with Facebook and Online games. I am more with bonding with friends, family and even my pets, which is one of my stress relievers. Everything really works fine and well. Just disconnect to reconnect with myself totally.

Speaking of disconnecting, yes this is what I really want, I’m sure, and I gradually do it now. Of course, when you disconnect with your devices, you will feel the real happiness and life, you will feel the nature and you will feel yourself by not measuring your heartbeat or mood but by letting them flow in your body and do what it wants.

Disconnecting with your devices in today’s era of technology and rapid spread of information is totally hard. You may go into process and actions that your body might have a hard time in absorbing it. As I watched the last part of the video, I truly see people’s true happiness and others still experiencing Phantom Phone Syndrome. I really love the idea of the Camp Grounded Summer Camp, and I hope we have here in the Philippines, because they are teaching the adults to put away their gadgets and to reconnect in real life. Also, the Digital Decontamination where they are removing the gadgets in the hands of the adults. The whole set-up of the Camp Grounded is really fit to the people nowadays, from the simple jobs likes using typewriter to feel the mistakes, Human Search where sharing of knowledge of everyone, and just enjoy disconnecting. Also, part of their goal is to teach them to feel and bond with friends, live life simple, love moments not the material things and most importantly Disconnect to Reconnect, reconnect with yourself.
