YouTube says it will intentionally cripple the playback of its videos in third-party apps that block its ads. A Monday post in YouTube's help forum notes netizens using applications that strip out adverts while streaming YouTube videos may encounter playback issues due to buffering or error messages indicating that the content is not available. "We want to emphasize that our terms don’t allow third-party apps to turn off ads because that prevents the creator from being rewarded for viewership, and Ads on YouTube help support creators and let billions of people around the world use the streaming service," said a YouTube team member identified as Rob. "We also understand that some people prefer an entirely ad-free experience, which is why we offer YouTube Premium." This crackdown is coming at the API level, as these outside apps use this interface to access the Google-owned giant's videos. Last year, YouTube acknowledged it was running scripts to detect ad-blocking extensions in web browsers, which ended up interfering with Firefox page loads and prompted a privacy complaint to Ireland's Data Protection Commission. And several months before that, the internet video titan experimented with popup notifications warning YouTube web visitors that ad-blocking software is not allowed. A survey published last month by Ghostery, a maker of software that promotes privacy by blocking ads and tracking scripts, found that Google's efforts to crack down on ad blocking made about half of respondents (49 percent) more willing to use an ad blocker. According to the survey, the majority of Americans now use advert blockers, something recommended by the FBI when conducting internet searches.

Forgive me if you've already answered this (I swear I looked before sending this ask), but how do I add add-ons to my pledge? It's been a long time since I've backed a Kickstarter and I've forgotten how that works. 😅 I want the new glitter charms, so do I just add an additional $20 to my pledge and wait for the survey to specify the item I want?
Howdy howdy! Here's a step by step for you! First, you'll log into kickstarter and click your icon to show projects you've backed. Select the zine, and at the top of the page there will be a "manage pledge" button
Go ahead and click on that, then scroll down to "change pledge"
Re-select your pledge. In my case, the secret bonus level! (This will NOT double charge you!)
After that, it will take you to the add-on selection page, where you're free to add as many items as your little heart desires! Just remember what comes in your pledge tier, as you'll already be receiving those items! For example, since I have the Secret Bonus Level, the only add-on I have is the new glitter charm set as they are add-on only
After selecting your add-ons, continue to payment and confirm changes and voila! Pledge adjusted and goodies received!! EDIT: This is a step-by-step for desktop! Here is kickstarters own link to edit pledges via the app on ios and android!

A-Café (Update #25) - Community Discussion
Good morning everyone! I know it's been a while since I've posted, but I'm finally back with another community update. In the first part, I'll be giving a brief overview of where we're at in terms of project progress. Then, in the second half, we'll discuss a new development in app accessibility.
Without further ado, let's begin!
1) Where are we at in the project currently?
A similar question was asked in the A-Café discord recently, so I figured I'd include my response here as well:
Right now we’re reworking the design of A-Café, both visually and architecturally. The initial planning and design phase of the project wasn’t done very thoroughly due to my inexperience, so now that I’m jumping back into things I want to ensure we have a solid prototype for usability testing. For us that means we’ve recently done/are doing a few things:
analyzing results from the old 2022 user survey (done)
discussing new ideas for features A-Café users might want, based on the 2022 user survey
reevaluating old ideas from the previous app design
making a new mock-up for usability testing
Once the mock-up is finished, I plan on doing internal testing first before asking for volunteer testers publicly (the process for which will be detailed in an upcoming community update).
2) Will A-Café be available for iOS and Android devices?
Yes! In fact, the first downloadable version of A-Café may no longer be so device-specific.
What do I mean by that? Well, in the beginning, the plan for A-Café was to make two different versions of the same app (iOS and Android). I initially chose to do this because device-specific apps are made with that device's unique hardware/software in mind--thus, they have the potential to provide a fully optimized user experience.
However, I've since realized that focusing on device-specific development too soon may not be the right choice for our project.
Yes, top-notch app performance would be a big bonus. But by purely focusing on iOS and Android devices for the initial launch, we'd be limiting our audience testing to specific mobile-users only. Laptop and desktop users for example, would have to wait until a different version of the app was released (which is not ideal in terms of accessibility).
Therefore, I've recently decided to explore Progressive Web App development instead.
[What is a Progressive Web App?]
A Progressive Web App (or PWA) is "a type of web app that can operate both as a web page and mobile app on any device" (alokai.com)
Much like a regular mobile app, a PWA can be found through the internet and added to your phone's home screen as a clickable icon. They can also have the ability to work offline and use device-specific features such as push-notifications.
Additionally, due to being web-based applications, PWAs can be accessed by nearly any device with a web browser. That means regardless of whether you have an iOS or Android device, you'd be able to access the same app from the same codebase.
In the end, a PWA version of A-Café should look and act similarly to an iOS/Android app, while also being accessible to various devices. And, due to having only one codebase, development of PWAs tends to be faster and be more cost-effective than making different versions of the same app.
To be clear, I haven't abandoned the idea of device-specific development entirely. We could launch iOS/Android versions of A-Café in the future if demand or revenue end up being high enough. But as of right now, I don't believe doing so is wise.
[What Does this Mean for me as a User?]
In terms of app installation and user experience, not much should hopefully change. I'd like to have A-Café available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
There will also be the option of searching for A-Café via your device's web browser, and then installing it on your home screen (iOS devices can only do so using Safari). We will likely rely on this method until we can comfortably ensure user access to A-Café on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
-------------
And that's it for now! Thank you for reading this latest community update. For more insight into the development process, consider joining the A-Café discord. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this post, we would love to hear your input in the comments below. See you later!

Visualized: The Cost of Building a Home in the U.S.
This was originally posted on our Voronoi app. Download the app for free on iOS or Android and discover incredible data-driven charts from a variety of trusted sources.
Building a new home is a major undertaking that involves many moving parts—from laying the initial foundation to giving the house its final touches.
In 2024, the average construction cost of a new home, which represents over 60% of an average home’s total sales price, hit a record high in the United States.
This infographic breaks down the average cost of building a new single-family home in the U.S. in 2024, by stages of construction. The data is based on a survey of 4,000 U.S. home builders by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Home Construction Breakdown: What Costs Most?
The average cost of constructing a new home was $428,215 in 2024, the highest level recorded by NAHB since it began its annual cost surveys in 1998. This equates to around $162 per square foot of finished floor space, with the average home spanning 2,647 square feet in 2024.
Here’s the full breakdown of the cost of building a new home, across different stages of the building process:The Cost of Building a Home in the U.S.

poppys amazing guide to free money for in app purchases (not clickbait)
long post ahead, sorry in advance. now idk if anyone else has talked about this at all, at least in the sky community. but with the amount of IAPs in sky (and seeing periodic posts of people offering services like commissions in exchange for season passes or exclusive IAP cosmetics) i feel like i just cant sit on this knowledge any longer if people turn out to not know about it. maybe almost everyone is aware of it and/or already using it or doesnt care and im a silly goose, but if this can save even just one person some money, or allow them to buy something they couldn't have afforded otherwise, then i'll be happy lol. it's certainly helped me and i'd like to share the love.
getting to the point: if you are on android/use google play (sorry everyone else idk if apple/the app store or other platforms have something similar, might be worth looking into or idk maybe this same app is on there too), then you can use this app called Google Opinion Rewards to get free google play credit.
this is going to feel like a cheesy fake youtube sponsorship or something but For Real this app gives you basically free money in response to answering surveys. i downloaded it a few years ago after one guy mentioned it in a video in passing, and as of now i have gotten from it almost $150 of google play credit.
“poppy, this sounds super sus”, you might be thinking, shaking your head. “answering surveys?? isnt this a scam to collect your personal data??” and fair enough! yeah probably the data is being sold (though on the page they claim to not share it with 3rd parties), im not super internet wise or savvy but idk it seems like everything is selling your data nowadays. and to get the most amount of surveys you can, you have to have certain things turned on in your google account.
it might ask you about a place you've been recently, or if you've been looking up something lately, or if you remember watching a certain video on youtube, or whatever. sometimes it's very accurate and specific with the targeted surveys, and sometimes it's totally fucking random. to me its not any creepier than getting an ad for like. wendys after only talking about it out loud with my phone within earshot, and most of them are pretty innocuous anyway, at least in my opinion. idk. u dont have to use this. im just putting it out there for those who might want to give it a whirl.
Before i go into the nitty gritty rambly details (on the google doc below), here’s the reassurance: this is real. Yes, the reward for each survey is less than a dollar, but it adds up. Sometimes there are a whole bunch at once and that can bring in a good haul. Since downloading the app, i’ve answered 730 surveys, and from that earned $142.11 (as of writing this right now) in total rewards/credit.
That’s not nothing! I’ve been able to buy sky IAPs with nothing but credit that i’ve earned from answering these surveys. The longest of these surveys literally take a max of like 20 seconds, and u can go right to them from the notification on your phone. It takes 0 effort essentially and for me it is worth it to see that receipt for $0 in my inbox. I have a compulsive spending habit and use it rly often so in my case mostly it just acts as a discount, subtracting from the price however much is in my balance, but still! That’s better than paying full price! Free money is free money! You can also choose whether or not to use it when making a purchase, and stop answering questions and giving them the data at any time. You can choose what to share with them really easily from the settings in the app, so if you want to turn off just location or something, you can just go to “survey eligibility”, select what you want to change, and manage it as you like. The only thing you have to have is your age, since it won’t send surveys to users with no age on their account. And you can use the credit on other apps too, since it’s google play credit! I just mostly use it for buying sky IAPs. you can save up to buy a season pass!
If you’re like me (maybe not. Im kind of pathetic. Someone pls validate me), you’ve tried whatever you can to not pay for microtransactions. Yeah there’s stuff like mistplay and those annoying ass “tasks for coins” esque things within an app that have you sign up for online magazines or download other apps and get to level 3 of PigFarmVille or whatever to earn credit or money, but those never got me anywhere and this is the most effective, legitimate thing i’ve ever used for this purpose. It takes time and patience, but before you know it you’ll have $5 kicking around in your balance and you can buy the cute oreo headband or pair of shoes or whatever tgc has in the shop this time. It legitimately feels like i’m cheating, sometimes, or that it’s too good to be true, but i’ve used this for three years now and it’s never let me down. And no i’m not sponsored, just a broke bitch that stumbled across this. They should give me something for this free promotion tho lmaoo
below I have both the sharing link to download the app if anyone wants to and a link to a google doc with my personal tips for this app on it since this post is way too long already and i dont want to waste more of peoples time, but anyway thanks for reading if you did, and if you try it out and it ends up helping lmk! c: and also maybe reblog to spread around if you think others would find this helpful. I almost never do posts like this especially bc im very unsure of myself and tend to think im wrong but sometimes i get stuff right and this feels like something i got right. Hope it helps you too.

Cell-site simulators mimic cell towers to intercept communications, indiscriminately collecting sensitive data such as call metadata, location information, and app traffic from all phones within their range. Their use has drawn widespread criticism from privacy advocates and activists, who argue that such technology can be exploited to covertly monitor protestors and suppress dissent.
The DNC convened amid widespread protests over Israel’s assault on Gaza. While credentialed influencers attended exclusive yacht parties and VIP events, thousands of demonstrators faced a heavy law enforcement presence, including officers from the US Capitol Police, Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, local sheriff’s offices, and Chicago police.
Concerns over potential surveillance prompted WIRED to conduct a first-of-its-kind wireless survey to investigate whether cell-site simulators were being deployed. Reporters, equipped with two rooted Android phones and Wi-Fi hotspots running detection software, used Rayhunter—a tool developed by the EFF [Electronic Frontier Foundation] to detect data anomalies associated with these devices. WIRED’s reporters monitored signals at protests and event locations across Chicago, collecting extensive data during the political convention.
...According to the EFF’s analysis, on August 18—the day before the convention officially began—a device carried by WIRED reporters en route a hotel housing Democratic delegates from states in the US Midwest abruptly switched to a new tower. That tower asked for the device’s IMSI and then immediately disconnected—a sequence consistent with the operation of a cell-site simulator.
“This is extremely suspicious behavior that normal towers do not exhibit,” Quintin [a senior technologist at the EFF] says. He notes that the EFF typically observed similar patterns only during simulated and controlled attacks. “This is not 100 percent incontrovertible truth, but it’s strong evidence suggesting a cell-site simulator was deployed. We don’t know who was responsible—it could have been the US government, foreign actors, or another entity.”

Wednesday, October 2rd, 2023.

do you have a favourite sibling? I only have one sibling. They were the catalyst for the recent family drama, and let's just say if I ever gave them the benefit of the doubt in the past, then those days are long expired.
apple or android? I don't think I've ever owned an Apple product.
what colour is the blanket/quilt on your bed? The comforter is light gray. I have several other blankets as well, and those are a variety of colors. One has hunting dogs in an autumn forest, the second has a group of kittens, and the last has a cardinal and holly leaves (kind of wintery/Christmas-themed).
any languages you want to learn? A couple visited the animal shelter the other day and they only spoke Spanish, which got me thinking - yet again - that it might be a good idea to at least learn the basics.
is maths easy or hard? I was decent at it up to a point, but as new concepts built upon my relatively flimsy foundation, things eventually started to crumble. I kind of wonder how I would do now, though - like would my adult brain be better at grasping those concepts, or would it still lead to the same inevitable end?
do you play basketball? I don't.
ever prank called someone? I went through a brief prank calling phase as a kid. I went a little too far, though, and it resulted in the one and only time I've ever been grounded.
ever tried carrot juice? I haven't.
what's an unusual/weird food combo you like? My dad used to eat pickle and peanut butter sandwiches. They aren't something I eat often - I think I've only tried them a couple of times - but the flavor combo wasn't bad. Aside from that, I really can't think of anything too unusual.
favourite milkshake flavour? Maybe something with coffee or peanut butter.
favourite type of milk? I use almond milk most often (in addition to coffee creamer), but if I was going to drink it plain, then I would go with whole milk.
would you rather wear a suit or dress? A suit.
best year of your life? Much of my childhood was pretty good, so maybe a year in there somewhere. And 2011 was great for backpacking-related highlights (I'm really going to miss those days) but was otherwise kind of shit. I think I'm going to go with 2023, though - it started off slowly, but ended on a high note that continued into 2024. There were some rough patches along the way, but nothing anywhere close to what I experienced in the decade prior to it.
how loud do you like your music in the car? Loud enough to hear, but not so loud that you can't comfortably carry on a conversation.
prefer to write or read? Read. These days, surveys are pretty much the only form of "writing" I do.
favourite apps? YouTube and Instagram.
did/does your favourite teacher wear glasses? I don't have a definite favorite teacher, and I honestly can't recall whether the ones I did like wore glasses or not.
how do you like your eggs if you like them at all? Over easy or scrambled.
ever seen snow? I have.
ever gone sledging? Yeah.
favourite holiday? It's so hard to choose. I enjoy all of the autumn/winter holidays. It's not even about the individual "days" themselves; it's about the whole atmosphere surrounding and leading up to them.
is your hair long? No.
do/did you play an instrument? I played piano and clarinet when I was little, and I taught myself to play a bit of guitar when I was in my early 20s. I don't play anything these days, though.
do you have a nintendo switch? Aside from a much-neglected Xbox 360 in our basement, I don't have any gaming systems/consoles.
ever skipped class? Yeah.
ever skipped a whole school day? Yeah.
what is a fruit you refuse to eat? I'm not a huge fan of oranges, but it's not to the point where I would absolutely refuse to eat them.
would you rather gain weight or lose weight? I don't want to lose weight because I need at least this level of strength and stamina to do what I do at the shelter, but I don't want to gain weight either because I don't think my eating disorder brain could cope with it. I'd really like to just stay stable for a while.
would you rather gain height or lose height? Neither.
when was the last time you ate cotton candy? I have no idea.
are both your eyes the same colour? Yeah.
do you prefer to carry a backpack or a purse? I take a backpack to the shelter and on trips to the Mountain Park, but I use a smaller bag for shorter outings.
do you like glittery things? I'm kind of indifferent.
ever watched a play in the theatre? I went to see The Ugly Duckling when I was a child, as well as a play at the community college (some sort of cowboy western musical comedy) when I was around 19-20 years old.
are you naturally blonde? No. Brown is my natural hair color.
do you have a pet rabbit? No.
do you have a pet fish? We used to.
do you have a pet cat? We have three kitties.
do you have a pet chicken? No.
best thing that's happened today? Probably my therapy appointment. Getting everything off my chest that I've been carrying around for the past couple of weeks was nice. I'm going to see a movie with my mom later (Wild Robot), so hopefully that will be a good time too. Praying for there to be nothing more than a little bit of unavoidable awkwardness. Also praying for my ability to set strong boundaries before a little awkwardness turns into a whole lotta awkwardness.
opinion on brussel sprouts? I like 'em.
what colour is your country's flag? Red, white, and blue.
are you studying any languages? I'm not.
how many followers do you have on instagram? I think I have 55.
how about twitter? I don't use Twitter anymore.
are you brave? Maybe in some ways.
how much would i have to pay you to get you to do karaoke? As long as no one else was subjected to my subpar singing, I would gladly do it for free.
would you rather watch a movie from home or at the movies? Home is more comfortable and convenient, but who am I kidding? I probably wouldn't even watch movies if it wasn't for my mom taking me to see them. I wish I was more of an independent movie watcher because there are so many I think I would enjoy, but I'm just…not.
last time you went ice skating? A long time ago.
have you cheated on a test? It's possible. I don't recall any specific instance, though.
painting or drawing? Digital/tablet painting.
art or science? Science.
dancing or singing? Singing.
history or geography? History.
favourite season? Autumn. With winter as a close second.
do you watch supernatural? I've seen a few episodes.
if you could change your eye colour would you? Naw.
what colour would you change it to? N/a.
what is your religion? I believe in God, but I don't follow a particular religion.
are both your ears pierced? No.

Disability Approved Side Hustles
I've been planning on making a video/tiktok series about this for like two months—but, you know, disabled—so maybe I'll update it to be fancier later. Who knows?
Note: None of these are going to make you enough to live on, either together or separately, but sometimes every little bit counts!
Bridge Money - referral code TWSCBQ
This is the simplest/easiest of my suggestions. Watch up to 25 ads a day for 1 cent each. Yeah, I know that's only like $7 a month if you remember most days. But it's so easy to do while doing almost anything else (that let's you use a hand for a sec every 30 secs or so) that it's just $7 you're leaving on the table if you don't do it.
You also get 2 cents cash back for purchases if you link a card. They have random offers for $4 if you do x thing, games you earn 1 cent a minute for playing, etc. But I mainly just get my 25 cents each day.
Please use a referral code, either mine or someone else's, because both people get $1!
Mistplay - referral in link (android only)
This is the main one I use. You play games on an android device and earn units you can then buy giftcards with. This is good if on SSI because it doesn't go to your bank account! But it does have paypal as an option if that's not a concern. I've earned over $400 so far, and someone more dedicated could have earned more in the same time frame. (I don't want to burn out.)
The best strategy is to play games that have the most "speed" bubbles first, and up to checkpoint 5, then switch games. Find one "loyalty game" that gives 4 gems per $1 and spend $2 to get to silver status (should last two months). DO NOT UNINSTAL THAT GAME! As long as you're actively using the app, you'll make the $2 back from the bonuses. Sometimes you'll get a "Daily Task" to get to checkpoint 6+ and depending on the reward it might be worth it then. If a game is boosted to like 8 speed bubbles, it can also be worth it go past checkpoint 5. Use your judgement.
Playwell - don't think it does referrals?
Very similar to Mistplay. If you like playing games on your phone and want to play one Mistplay doesn't have, it might be here. (I refuse to play games for free anymore lol.) I mostly just have it because sometimes I'm able to double dip. Right now I am playing Merge Inn which is a 4 speed bubble game on Mistplay and earns 5k points per 15 minutes on Playwell. I'm going past checkpoint 5 for this one because I'll earn $2 if I get to level 31 in the game through Playwell plus the time based rewards. And I just like merging games.
Swagbucks - referral in link
Swagbucks has a ton of stuff. I would suggest you actually look up a post specific to that to see all the options because it's like surveys, receipts, offer walls, coupons, just... a lot.
But like Mistplay and Playwell it also does games. And like Playwell you can also sometimes double dip! So I'll check there and see if they have an offer for games that have higher speed bubbles on Mistplay. Some of the offers are really hard and time consuming so def look into it first, though. You can often find guides on reddit for getting them done on time.
Atlas Earth - referral code BAMSSE
This is going to seem like a scam at first. I actually had it downloaded for a few weeks, thought it was too much effort for too little return, stopped using it, and then changed my mind. It has a sort of snowball effect so at the beginning you'll make basically nothing—fractions of a cent kinda nothing—but over time have the potential to make a few hundred bucks a year.
At the beginning it is more important to be hard core about it. I had a timer set every 20 minutes for a while lol. Now, I'm a bit more lax. If I kept up the timer I could increase my earnings faster but again, don't want to burn out. I'm at the point now where I'll make about $5 a month as long as I get on every 5-6 hours for a couple minutes.
This is another one where you need to use a referral code, even if not mine! You get 200 "atlas bucks" for free after buying your 10th plot of land as long as you use a referral code before buying I think your second. I really regret not using a code myself!
Upside - referral TASHA43729
This one is more about saving money than making money. They do cash back on gas and some other things. I recently drove from PA to FL and got $28 in cash back for the gas we bought on the trip down. (Didn't really use it on the way back, because Grandma gave us some giftcards. 🥰) You can also get 5-20% at random restaurants and like Bath & Body Works?? The ads say also grocery stores but we don't have any that take part in our area. You can (and we did) use this in conjunction with the 2 cents from Bridge money, whatever cash back you get on the card itself, scanning the receipt, etc.

Do you know how can I get the multimedia pack for free
:)
The multimedia pack isn't free, but when you finish the game for the first time, you can pay 3€ (or 3$) instead of 6€ (or 6$).
If you don't wanna spend real money, I suggest you do some surveys. I don't know what kind of OS you use, if you have Android, Google has a paid survey app (Google Opinion Rewards) and points program in the Play Store. When you reach the appropriate amount, choose "Google balance" at checkout and pay like this.
I did it like this.
You can also look for apps that give gift cards, but most of them are just scams.
I hope I have been of help to you :)
