Then, go change into your bathing suit and swim in the Bay. It is very cold but you will see many beautiful things, including old ships, which you may touch, and sea lions, which you may not. A good thing to do while waiting for someone to answer the door is read a new book you have picked up at Green Apple, Booksmith, City Lights or any other of my town's amazing bookstores. If you see me in the water, I do not need rescuing although it might look like it.

“Changing” is a word applied so readily to “San Francisco” nowadays that it sounds like the town changed its name: I grew up in San Francisco, but I now live in Changing San Francisco. Twenty years ago, when it was just San Francisco and Lisa Brown was just my girlfriend, we didn’t see any wild animals around our apartment. Probably the wildest thing in our neighborhood was a sex club called Eros. We never visited it, and it was nondescript from the outside, but there’d been some articles about it, or maybe a piece on the radio, so people always asked us about it. “We live right near it,” we used to tell them. “It’s near our video store.” Nowadays, though, in Changing San Francisco, everyone asks about the tech industry. The tech industry is the presumed source of all changes in Changing San Francisco, from traffic to homeless encampments, from the new businesses that are springing up to the old ones closing their doors.

My novel has the tech industry in it, if only because it would be impossible to write about San Francisco without mentioning it, the way it would be impossible to write about Paris without mentioning food, or Mumbai without mentioning colonialism, and like food or colonialism or any other knotty topic, I’m not always sure what I’m talking about. I never hear the latest news or buy the latest gadget, but, like everyone else, I’m now guided on road trips by a talking map, even to places I’ve been countless times. If I’m on foot and I want to go home, I can summon a stranger who will drive me there and I don’t even have to talk to them. I give them all five stars, the highest rating. I don’t have the bona fide know-how to chart the tech industry’s influence, but I know it’s having an effect on San Francisco, or taking a toll is maybe what I mean. We now have a culture of tech bros in my city, although “tech bro,” as with “hipster” or “yuppie” before that, is a term only applied to other people. “I hate tech bros,” is something I’ve heard from more than one person who makes what any reasonable person would call a ton of money working for an internet site everyone uses. Twenty years ago, nobody said this, although, of course, people spouting nonsense is not a new phenomenon in San Francisco, or anywhere else.

I married a New England woman. She’s from a family where you live in Manhattan until you have a child, and then you move to Long Island. Or if you’re a rebel, Connecticut. That’s kind of what I thought was maybe going to happen. But also I’m a big propagandist for San Francisco, too. When she and I were first dating we spent a summer here, and I pretended that every spectacular thing that I took her to was a thing I’d stumbled upon. Like, “Oh, I’m hungry, do you want to have some dumplings right here? Could you use a little pick-me-up? Let’s just stop by Cafe Trieste! We’ll have an espresso. no. but i want a cat and an owl or maybe even a horse. i like animals and i want to be a friend to every creature. i love cats dearly (as any sensible person does), but i also love owls because they’re so cute and of course, i like horses mostly because i used to go horseback riding with my dad as a kid and they are such strong, beautiful animals. (i also think every animal is affectionate in its own way when it’s taken care of very well.)

originally, india, but now i’m in southeast asia. i was born in mumbai, spent my childhood there and then we moved. we are a brown immigrant family so you can guess what it looks like.

14. are you psychic in any way?

not exactly…? if you mean in the supernatural or paranormal sense, then no. but i’m an adaptive and meticulous planner, which makes up for it i think. though i am addicted to knowing everything and being right, i’m trying to learn to cope with things not going my way. my mom has amazing precognition though so i rely on her for these kinds of things because i really, really don’t like being caught unawares. i wish i was psychic. maybe one day i’ll commit to gaining a second sight.

grey. i honestly just have everything in shades of black and grey in my wardrobe so if you ask me any other day, the answer will be the same.

What is a Food Forest?

Food forests are agricultural systems where numerous diverse food crops are grown within any given patch. They’re called food ‘forests’ and not food ‘farms’ because they are designed to look, function and feel like forests.

Why forests? For the simple reason that they are epitomes of natural ecosystems. They are resilient, adapt to changing weather conditions, and need external support. All forest elements - trees, vines, shrubs, animals, insects, even soil and water - speak a common language and rely on each other to survive and grow. This makes the forest ecosystem self-sustaining.

Characteristics of a Food Forest

Food forests are designed to mimic the processes and patterns of nature. Naturally, they will include all the characteristics of an actual forest.

The biggest visual characteristic of a food forest, however, is that it looks drastically different from modern monoculture farming. Typically, in a food forest, no two patches will look the same. In addition, the plants grown are primarily edibles.

But unlike forests, food forests do not grow on their own. Well, not initially. Permaculture farming methods are applied to design a food forest. Deep land studies and analyses dictate the best course of action for the land that is in tune with the landowner’s aspirations for their ‘food garden’.

How do Food Forests Aid Sustainable Agriculture?

Modern agriculture has been suffering due to climate change. It is also heavily market-dependent. Hence farmers are forced to grow more on less land. This leads to the excess use of fertilisers that ultimately degenerate the soil.

Food forests, on the other hand, make use of permaculture farming principles. It is a regenerative approach to farming where all activities work towards restoring the land’s nutrients and capacity. ok writing here to overstep the preliminary anxiety of where (read: which of the 1453455 open docs) to write in....i am back in delhi. finally. i am facing the winter again, head on, after 3 goddamn years. i feel horrible for having left my dog back in mumbai, and forcing myself to leave earlier than when my family wanted. i could have stayed on till dad’s birthday. even until mine technically. i would have made everyone happy. but this is who i am. i don’t make anyone happy, much less myself. i had to leave because of my own guilt. because they didn’t know how badly i was faring in life, how many lies i have told them in the past few months.

anyway. i am back in the home range now, as the animals say (do?). adjusting to the cold slowly, not complaining about the lack of water or heating in the house. no. not me. in fact i have had a decent night and a decent morning. it is true that i am severely lacking in funds at the moment and i need to secure a paying job soon, preferably part time. for which i need to put my ass out there and network. but even more importantly, this is the resolution i make: i am not going to be that friend who disappears anymore.  this city has seen me being loved by so many. and now i am at this point where i distanced myself from everyone, where i feel so awkward that i bail on meetings that i set up with them. it’s the shame of having to explain who i have been in the past few years. five years. but hari tells me that who i have been is not entirely bad. i should think upon that. i miss vasant kunj. of course i miss vasant kunj. i miss malviya nagar as well. i miss all these pockets of life where i went and ended things. my mother told me on the phone that we shouldn’t say it like that, with such finality. that such negativity comes to bite us. she has no idea how unnervingly right she is in the context of my life and my relationships.

but the resolution, yes. it is to not resign myself to the idea of unsustainable relationships. i am not a lone wolf. i have made mistakes, but i can continue to try and care and foster my bonds, especially the old ones. there are friends around me who have known me since i was barely 20. i have to go out there. i have to believe in delhi. i have to believe in how well it knows me.
