I still can't get the unused concept art of Wish out of my head so I've been reading a lot of rewrites and looking at a lot of Wish redesigns...
So... I got inspired. I'm currently conceptualizing my own Wish "rewrite/redesigns", but with a twist. It's gonna be a spiritual "prequel", cuz idk I feel like being meta since we'll be using the original concepts before the final concepts/decisions made for the final movie XD
Many of my "prequel" characters will be stand-ins for the canon characters! So "Asha" will be renamed "Amala", "Magnifico" will be called "Mamoun", and so on. Think of Pokemon Legends: Arceus regarding the relations of these "OCs" with the canon characters.
Anyway, here are the designs I have so far! I only have the designs for Amala and the Star for now. Hopefully, I can get to draw the other characters soon, especially Mamoun and his wife.
Tumblr media
The story will be called "Once Upon a Wish"
Here's an overview of what I have so far... Some details may change if I feel like my other choices serve the story better. (Also, small disclaimer, this is just a veryyy self-indulgent AU made by yours truly, so some details may not be accurate with the canon lore present in Wish)
The story takes place on the same island of Rosas, but from many years ago. If my research is right, canon Wish takes place in the 1200s, so maybe my "prequel" can take place in around the 900s-1000s. Rosas definitely wasn't called Rosas back then, but I'm still figuring out what to call it so I'm just gonna refer to it as "an island".
Amala is a shy, meek, but hardworking apprentice of the island's head sorcerer Mamoun (hence, her color palette looks similar to Mickey's outfit from The Sorcerer's Apprentice). Despite all her hard work in her magic studies, she doesn't really excel at using magic, making a lot of accidents during training. If there's anything she really excels at, it's the act of storytelling (She can draw/animate, sing, and write stories like fairy tales).
Amala also has a little sister Ayah, who I can imagine is the Lilo/Anna to Amala's Nani/Elsa. Ayah is spunky and cheerful, but she has an illness that makes her disabled. The sisters are orphans, but they live under an old family friend they affectionately call Grandpa Dabir. Dabir is a retired bard turned doctor who was part of a troupe with 6 other former bards, all of whom he and the sisters still interact.
That's all I can share for now. Feel free to ask me any questions about stuff about this AU!

sorry but there's no real difference between pissing and whining about spiderverse's lack of nominations and pissing and whining about any other marvel movie's lack of nominations.

geno front and center ^_^ also i asked the Coolest 90s animator ive ever met for critique on the geno renders and he called them 'drawings' and i havent decided if thats something i should correct or not yet. but if im fooling people into thinking they're drawings instead of 3D renders that's probably a good sign. but also a bad sign because does that mean recruiters will overlook it thinking its just concept art?
i hate computers.
but i think what i concluded was that instead of sending people just the one action render, i will send that PLUS a link to the turn around saved to my drive.
edit: just looking at it as its own image my portfolio as a whole still really screams 'girl' and 'colorful' doesnt it? sigh. people keep telling me i need to stop that but unfortunately unless i am being forced like in the case of following an art director i think its just gonna stay colorful.

i think one reason why the musical works so well for me is that music is one of the few ways that a changing medium can come close to emulating the effect of nabokovs dazzling prose. music affects (many) people on an emotional level and catchy music and rhymes can pull you along just as fast if you let your guard down. there's a reason "dante, petrach and poe" is maybe the catchiest tune in the show - it's also humbert at his most blatantly abject. if you don't listen to the lyrics you're bopping along before you know it even though this man with his lovely singing is going into great detail about the sex appeal of (quote) "barely pubescent" children.
just like in the novel humbert is pulling out all the stops of the medium to get the audience on his side, utilising the trappings of musical and emotions associated with certain numbers and types of music to package the awful things he's saying - and the lyrics are more explicit than most adaptations ever dared to be regarding the full horror of the story. you could write an analysis like this about probably each of the songs individually (and ideally someone who knows more about music theory than me should do that) but especially with "dante" and "lolita" the love song/lament that either opens or closes the show depending on the version the lyrics are so spine crawling (arguably also tell me, tell me, though the context does more than the lyrics there) while the music invites you immediately to side with the figure performing them.
any adaptation that can't rely fully on nabokov's prose needs to find something equally seductive and that's a hurdle for most other mediums that i think really bizarrely makes the musical stage very well suited to tell "lolita".

I wrote a movie. Here's some stuff I learnt ~~
As someone moving from the written word to the screen, the number one thing I had to reign in was the urge to OVER DIRECT.
With a book, everything is laid out, you describe it all. From the way a character crosses the room, to what that room looks like, it's all on the page.
With a movie, you need to remember that you aren't the only person bringing it to life. You need to allow the actors, directors, etc. the freedom to make their own choices for the scene and trust in their talent too.
My Heartstopper obsession came in handy here because I remembered Alice Oseman talking about this very thing, and how she had accidentally created two-hour long episodes because she was used to book-length scene descriptions.
I've put up the entire script here so you can go through it and see exactly what I did! (Psst while you're there, leave a vote saying you love the movie and it could even get made!)
Previously thought to have been nothing more than a bedtime story, Jayce and Lott find themselves unwillingly heading to The Crescent of Fools and Forgotten Time, a place where the insane rule sovereign and the sane are grinded to a dust, folded into the ripples of the Crescent. All to steal The Luminality Paradox, an artifact of untold power, for one of the most dangerous overlords of the criminal world, and to lay even more unchecked power at her feet for her to abuse. ~~ The Crescent of Fools and Forgotten Time
