I’m curious if anyone can solve this localization puzzle for me.
There is a character named Emuru エムル in Shangri La Frontier.
The English localization of her name is Emul, both in manga and anime subtitles. The “L” isn’t weird, but I’m confused by the dropping of the “u.”
When エムル is spoken in the anime, it’s three syllables, so it’s not that the “u” is silent.
I’m mostly curious if there’s a logic to this worth knowing regarding Japanese, or if it’s something like “someone thought ‘Emul’ would be more marketable”.
Something stupid about the anime localizers vs fans thing is that localizers think that the only people mad about it is right wing 4chan lolicons. I’m a left wing aro gay trans man who think changing the original text to such a degree that it has a completely different meaning then the original is ridiculous. I’m the exact kinda guy they are pandering to and I find it wrong. I’m anti-ai but hopefully this scare will get localizers to do their freaking job correctly
Man the debate surrounding anime translations, localizations and censorship is just fucking 😬.
I mean this is just bullshit clickbaity crap, fuck this site.
It's because of how very hostile they are that I feel obligated to try to appease them in some way.
Just read an article about the sustainability of having localizations in anime and manga and while it is true that localization has some meaning lost because well, Japanese isn't one to one with English. There's bound to be things lost in translation.
But the more meticulous folks are the ones who'll probably care about integrity and stuff and they are loyal about buying products so yeah there's that. It's a sustainable business approach in the long run if one just does what the scanlators do but in print form.
It's an interesting idea that's worth exploring and hopefully gets adapted in the future. But the bellyaching should be toned down methinks.
Please fill out the interest check form if you're interested in buying or participating in this zine!
All proceeds will go to IATSE's mutual aid fund (AID IA) which goes into the hands of animation workers who are struggling to pay their bills due to layoffs!
Form will close Friday August 30th! Turn on notifications for updates!
Noelle and Berdly fall into the Dark World (with sound!) 📟 This one ended up looking like a trailer of sorts, hope you all enjoy! Heavily inspired by Holosynth's video, which you can watch right here!
Berdly and Noelle renders again (making these was the reason why I wanted to give them a proper animation):
Pygmy Sperm Whale: the whales only come to the water’s surface when the sea and weather conditions are very calm. As a result, scientists rarely see pygmy sperm whales at sea. This makes it difficult to estimate their minimum population size or current population trends. They grow to be only 12ft long and can weigh between 700 and 1,000lbs.
Okay so I've been wanting to tell you that you're literally my favourite twst artist 😭🩷
So my question is, how do you manage to come up with these funny comics? CUZ I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
(P.s: Lovin' the art style ✨)
oh geeze, thanks! 💚💚💚 I'm really glad people enjoy my stupid sense of humor; mostly I just draw things to make myself laugh, and if it makes other people laugh too, then bonus points! usually it's just one joke or mental image that gets stuck in my head (every time I saw Fellow spin his cane, all I could think about was him go-go-gadgeting away on it...) and in my quest to justify it, it picks up other jokes and bits along the way and usually doesn't even end up as the main focus anymore. entire narrative arcs have spun out just so I could use a single bad pun in a throwaway line. this is a terrible way to explain it but I'm not sure how else to put it into words!
and sometimes it's just "weird things my sister has said that I make fun of her for"
“The capital lies before us, my friend. What a sombre place it seems and one that holds the answers to many a mystery. I too have felt the pull of this place, though now I sit before it I find myself hesitant to descend.
“Is it fear, I wonder, or something else that holds me back?”
