Bornean orangutans are one of three orangutan species, all critically endangered. They thrive in carbon-rich peat swamp forests on the Indonesian island of Borneo. These habitats are also the sites of massive wildfires.
Indonesian wildfires in 2015 caused some of the worst fire-driven air pollution ever recorded. The fires were driven by an El Niño climatic cycle, which caused especially dry weather in the region.
Compared to other wildfires, peatland fires smolder underground and produce exceptionally high levels of hazardous gases and particulate matter—a leading cause of global pollution-related deaths and illnesses.
Orangutans are well known as an “indicator species” – one that can serve as a proxy for the health of an ecosystem. Changes in their environments often cause conspicuous changes in the apes’ health and behavior. Frequent and persistent exposure to toxic smoke could have severe consequences for orangutans and other wildlife.
Toxic air pollution also poses serious health and safety risks for researchers. However, remote sensing techniques, such as satellite images, GPS data, and acoustic monitoring, are increasingly popular ways to track wildlife populations and see how creatures respond to changes in their environments.
I have studied the behavior, ecology, and acoustic communication of wild primates in Indonesia since 2005. In a new study, my coauthors and I investigated how wild orangutans in Borneo were affected by toxic emissions from Indonesia’s 2015 peatland wildfires—by studying their voices.
Around the world, wildfires are on the rise. They often produce a thick blanket of haze that contains diverse hazardous gases and particulate matter, or PM. Most recently, smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed the U.S. East Coast and Midwest in June 2023, turning skies orange and triggering public health alerts.
Studies have shown that human health risks from wildfire smoke include respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, systemic inflammation, and premature death. Much less is known about how smoke affects wildlife, but in a pair of studies published in 2021 and 2022, scientists at the California National Primate Research Center reported alarming findings.
After less than two weeks of exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter—in particular, ultrafine particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter, which are known as PM2.5—captive rhesus macaques suffered a spike in pregnancy loss. What’s more, surviving fetuses and infants suffered long-term effects on lung capacity, immune responses, inflammation, cortisol levels, behavior, and memory.
During Indonesia’s 2015 fires, Borneo’s air had particulate matter concentrations nearly an order of magnitude higher than the levels in these studies. This made the potential implications for people and wildlife who gasped through Indonesia’s wildfire smoke for nearly two months extremely worrying.
I was studying wild orangutans in the forests of Indonesian Borneo when the 2015 fires started. My colleagues and I at the Tuanan Orangutan Research Station tracked local fires and patrolled nearby hot spots to assess the risk of fire spreading to our research area.
Wearing N95 masks, we continued to monitor orangutans in hopes of learning how the animals were coping with encroaching fires and thick smoke. A few weeks into the fire season, I noticed a difference in the sound of the males’ “long call,” which was the focus of my research.
Long calls are booming vocalizations that can be heard over distances of more than half a mile (1 kilometer). Orangutans are semi-solitary and live in dispersed communities, so these calls serve an important social role. Adult males make them to advertise their prowess to listening females in the area and to scare off any eavesdropping rival males. A couple of weeks after the smoke had appeared, I thought these males sounded raggedy—a little like humans who smoke a lot.
We observed the orangutans for 44 days during the fires, until large blazes encroached on our study area. At that point, we stopped the study to help extinguish the blazes with local firefighting teams and other government and nonprofit groups. Fires burned in our study area for three weeks.
Using data that we collected before, during, and after the fires, I led an analysis of this Bornean orangutan population’s behavior and health. My coauthors and I found that in the weeks after the fires, the apes reduced their activities—resting more and traveling shorter distances—and consumed more calories than normal.
But although they were eating more and moving less, we found by collecting and testing the apes’ urine that they were still burning stored fat—a sign that they somehow were using up more energy. We hypothesized that the cause might be inflammation—the swelling, fever, pain, and fatigue that human and animal bodies experience in response to infection or injury.
Studies have shown that when humans are exposed to particulate matter, they can experience inflammation, both in their respiratory tracts and throughout their bodies. We wanted to know whether inhaling wildfire smoke would cause vocal changes in orangutans, just as inhaling cigarette smoke does in humans.
For this study, my coauthors and I carefully analyzed more than 100 sound recordings of four male orangutans that we followed before and during the fires to measure their vocal responses to wildfire smoke. Research has shown that a suite of vocal features—including pitch, vocal harshness or hoarseness, and shaky voice—reflects the underlying health and condition of both human and nonhuman animals. We were looking for acoustic clues about how this toxic air might be affecting the orangutans.
During the fires and for several weeks after the smoke cleared, these males called less frequently than usual. Normally, orangutans call about six times a day. But during the fires, their call rate was cut in half. Their voices dropped in pitch, showing more vocal harshness and irregularities.
Collectively, these features of vocal quality have been linked to inflammation, stress, and disease—including COVID-19—in human and nonhuman animals.
Increasingly frequent and prolonged exposure to toxic smoke could have severe consequences for orangutans and other animals. Our research highlights the urgent need to understand the long-term and far-ranging effects of peatland fires in Indonesia, which is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
By uncovering the linkages between acoustic, behavioral, and energetic shifts in orangutans, our study highlights a way for scientists and wildlife managers to safely monitor the health of orangutans and other animals. Using passive acoustic monitoring to study vocally active indicator species, like orangutans, could unlock critical insights into wildfire smoke’s effects on wildlife populations worldwide.

Research published on Friday by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) at Cop28 reveals the huge impact of livestock emissions on the climate. Livestock produce methane, a greenhouse gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, so are a key contributor to the climate crisis.
The FAO found that livestock agrifood systems – which include cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens – are responsible for 6.2 gigatonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions.
This accounts for approximately 12% of all emissions in 2015, the baseline year chosen for the study.
It also found:
Of all the six animal species considered, cattle contribute to more than 60% of global livestock emissions.
Of the edible animal products – meat, milk and eggs – two-thirds of the emissions are linked to meat production across all species.
A further one-third of emissions comes from the production, processing and transport of feed inputs.
By 2050, demand for animal products is likely to grow by a fifth from 2020 levels
Without intervention, this upward trend could result in increased emissions from livestock systems, potentially undermining efforts to reduce GHG emissions and exacerbating global temperature rises.
The FAO concludes that more sustainable practices are needed, including breeding livestock for lower emissions and changing their feed, as well as changing human diets.
The report included some data that will trouble campaigners. Cattle in sub-Saharan Africa produce relatively far more emissions than North American cattle, according to the study, although most conservationists would regard subsistence herding as more acceptable environmentally than the mega farms of the US midwest.
The report notes that the absolute emissions of US intensive livestock farming are far greater than those of African herds, but said there was scope for interventions in Africa that would reduce emissions.
Campaigners will not want to see the US given a clean sheet and subsistence farmers taking the blame – that would be the wrong conclusion to draw from their data.
FAO will also present, separately, on Sunday a road map for the world food systems for staying within 1.5C .
Ivo Vlaev, a professor of behavioural science at Warwick Business School at the University of Warwick, said: “Shifting public dietary habits, especially in affluent countries where meat consumption is high, is a complex challenge. People’s food choices are deeply ingrained and influenced by cultural, social, and personal factors.
“Interventions to change these behaviours must account for these influences, potentially employing strategies like social norming (highlighting the growing popularity of plant-based diets), framing (emphasising the personal health benefits of reduced meat consumption), and facilitating ease of access to alternative protein sources.”

NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: Scrutinizing the Dust by Marjorie Hanft
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/scrutinizing-the-dust-by-marjorie-hanft/
Marjorie Hanft taught psychology for 27 years at Eastern Illinois University (until retirement in 2015). She continues to live in rural Illinois, caring for her centenarian dad with the help of her partner, a geologist, and hiking in local conservation areas. Her two adult daughters live nearby. Hanft’s #poems have appeared in such journals as Alte, Calyx, Cauldron Anthology, First Literary Review-East, Graham House Review, Humana Obscura, Muddy River Poetry Review, Persimmon Tree, and various anthologies.
PRAISE FOR Scrutinizing the Dust by Marjorie Hanft
Marjorie Hanft‘s gorgeous poems in Scrutinizing the Dust create a sensuous world of sound and taste, as well as sight and touch. Both the American Midwest and Ancient Greece come alive in the “complex sweetness” she uncovers as she surveys a forest, a rainbow, the biography of a famous painter, and “the first color in language.” Sometimes touching on the comic (such as impersonating the Statue of Liberty) and, at times, the tragic (“My father takes…a new dip…into the river/of forgetfulness,” these poems, filled with quirky information, shed light and music on the animals, fruits and thoughts that pepper our world.
–Austin Alexis, Author of Privacy Issues and For Lincoln & Other Poems
Marjorie’s poems epitomize beauty and brilliance in their impeccable attention to details that place us in the moment. We see her daughter’s “scars/ that turn from crimson to the color of her own skin.” We hear the “small sounds cluck/ in her throat.” And always we learn. In the poem describing persimmons she perfectly yokes the intellect with the sensuous, “in Greece/ what are called date-plums are bigger softer/ with smoother skin…” Hers is poetry at its most remarkable, as her imagery enables us to reach perceptions we have never imagined, “Locate the meaning/ of yellow &you will find that it blinks &flickers/ with intuitive intellect in the REM world of dreams.” Together her poems weave a journey through memory, history, art and the vision of words, showing us the delicacy and elegance of language. In her poem “Note to Emily,” Marjorie grudgingly accepts “a sightedness” she “didn’t choose.” Her acquiescence to that muse, despite herself, has gifted us with luminous and transcendent poetry.
–Olga Abella is the author of two books of poetry, Watching the Wind and What it Takesa and a former editor of Bluestem and Karamu.

Drought in the Great Plains and Midwest is getting more intense, federal report shows (Yahoo News) A drought in the Great Plains and the Midwest has quickly grown in its size and severity in the last month, according to an update released Wednesday by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS). Currently, 60% of the North Central U.S. is in “moderate to exceptional drought” with 30% in “severe drought or worse” according to NIDIS, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The worst-hit areas include Kansas, where 30% of the state is in exceptional drought, and Nebraska, which is 12% in exceptional drought. Smaller parts of Colorado, Missouri and South Dakota are as badly affected. While the entire Midwest has been in a worsening drought for months, the western portions of the region—the Missouri River Basin and the Great Plains—have been hit the hardest. Water has dropped to “record low levels” on the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio rivers, NIDIS reported, which has impeded boats and shipping.
Hawaii’s Big Island gets warning as huge volcano rumbles (AP) Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt. Scientists say an eruption isn’t imminent, but they are on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit. Experts say it would take just a few hours for lava to reach homes closest to vents on the volcano, which last erupted in 1984. Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. They recommend having a ″go″ bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members. “Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Retirees drawn by the Florida dream wonder: What now? (Washington Post) For more than a century, millions have flocked to Florida with similar visions to live out their golden years on the beach. The Florida dream exerts a powerful pull: The state consistently ranks among the fastest-growing in the nation. It is forever under construction, with new houses and condos and apartment buildings rising in already-crowded cities. Everyone, it seems, wants a piece of paradise. But Ian, one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the United States, upended the idyllic lives so many had planned for themselves in this stretch of the Sunshine State, often pouring in their life’s savings. As Floridians surveyed the damage from the near-Category 5 storm, which killed at least 114 people, some wrestled with painful questions: Should they stay and rebuild? Could they? Florida was already in the throes of a housing crisis; the storm made it worse. Damage estimates reach into the tens of billions, and rebuilding won’t come cheap. Even before Ian, Floridians scrambled to find coverage in the state’s fragile insurance market. Moreover, as climate change makes extreme weather far more common, some question the wisdom of rebuilding on barrier islands and in other delicate coastal areas.
Turkeys (Washington Post) This Thanksgiving turkey is poised to be a bit more expensive, and for once it’s not due to the supply chain. This one is because of the pandemic, and no, not that one. There’s an avian flu that’s been tearing through the U.S. poultry business, with some 44.6 million birds dying from the virus or being depopulated due to exposure this year. Of those, 6 million were turkeys. The avian flu is on track to be more significant than the 2015 bird flu that claimed 50.5 million birds in the worst animal health event in the history of the U.S.
Crisis-stricken Cuba torn between ally Russia, neighbor U.S. (AP) When Hurricane Ian tore through western Cuba in late September, causing an island-wide blackout, it left the government grappling with a deepening energy crisis and simmering discontent among Cubans. It also once again thrust the Caribbean island into the middle of an escalating tug-of-war between its seaside neighbor, the United States, and ally, Russia. At a time when Cuba is urging the Biden administration to ease U.S. sanctions that it says stifle hurricane recovery efforts, Russian oil has flooded into the island, providing relief to debilitating blackouts. Russia has shipped an estimated $352 million in oil to Cuba since the start of the Ukraine war, the biggest inflow from Russia this century and enough to cover about 40% of the shortfall in the island’s supplies, according to independent estimates. The sales also potentially alleviated the weight of international sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. “(It leaves them) between a rock and a hard place,” said William LeoGrande, a professor at American University who has tracked Cuba for years. “Cuba can’t afford to alienate either side in what is shaping up to be a new Cold War.”
In Britain’s inflation crisis, healthy diets are a casualty (Reuters) Fresh vegetables and fish are falling off the menu. Packaged pizzas and processed meat are the dishes of the day. Many British households are turning away from healthier foods as rampant inflation pushes them towards cheaper processed meals, according to consumer data and experts who are worried about the nation taking a nutritional nosedive. Joanne Farrer used to regularly serve her three children roast beef dinners or stews packed with fresh vegetables. Now she’s more likely to give them chicken nuggets and fries or sausages and mashed potatoes, which are “cheaper and filling”. Her monthly welfare payment’s mostly swallowed by rent and the rising cost of gas and electricity. “It doesn’t seem like there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” said the 44-year-old, who does voluntary work for a charity in the city of Portsmouth on England’s south coast. “You think, when’s it going to end? But it’s not.”
Putin demands U.S. respect ‘multipolar’ world (Washington Post) In a keynote foreign policy speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin portrayed Russia as a champion of rising nations in a new multipolar world, which he demanded that the United States and other Western powers begin to respect as equals. Seeking common ground with the right-wing in the West, he described Russia as a defender of traditional Christian values as society has lost its way. Despite making the rivalry with the West a cornerstone of his foreign policy and his every day talking points, Putin insisted that Russia does not fundamentally see itself as the enemy of the West but instead opposes the West’s attempts to instill “strange” and “neoliberal” values in other societies in the world. “There are at the very least two Wests,” Putin said. One is the West of “traditional, primarily Christian, values, freedom, patriotism, the richest culture” that Russia is close to. “But there is another West—aggressive, cosmopolitan, neocolonial, the one acting as a tool of the neoliberal elites,” he continued. “And Russia, of course, will never put up with precisely the dictate of this West.”
Russia warns West: We can target your commercial satellites (Reuters) A senior Russian foreign ministry official said that commercial satellites from the United States and its allies could become legitimate targets for Russia if they were involved in the war in Ukraine. Russia, which in 1957 launched Sputnik 1, the first manmade satellite, into space and in 1961 put the first man in outer space, has a significant offensive space capability—as do the United States and China. In 2021, Russia launched an anti-satellite missile to destroy one of its own satellites. Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy director of the Russian foreign ministry’s department for non-proliferation and arms control, told the United Nations that the United States and its allies were trying to use space to enforce Western dominance. Vorontsov, reading from notes, said the use of Western satellites to aid the Ukrainian war effort was “an extremely dangerous trend”. “Quasi-civilian infrastructure may be a legitimate target for a retaliatory strike,” Vorontsov told the United Nations First Committee, adding that the West’s use of such satellites to support Ukraine was “provocative”.
At least 42 die as storm triggers floods, landslides in Philippines (AP) Flash floods and landslides set off by torrential rains swamped a southern Philippine province, killing at least 42 people, leaving 16 others missing and trapping some residents on their roofs, officials said Friday. Most of the victims were swept away by rampaging floodwaters and drowned or were hit by debris-filled mudslides in three towns in hard-hit Maguindanao province, said Naguib Sinarimbo, the interior minister for a five-province Muslim autonomous region run by former guerrillas. The unusually intense rains were triggered by Tropical Storm Nalgae, which was expected to slam into the country’s eastern coast from the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, forecasters said.
Egypt’s economic woes (WSJ) Egypt and the International Monetary Fund have agreed to an initial deal for a $3 billion loan, officials announced on Thursday. Once approved, it would be the fourth time that Cairo is receiving this type of loan since 2016. Authorities estimate that one-third of Egyptians are currently living in poverty.
Gaslit By Gas Giant (NYT) Following the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the behest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, President Biden promised to treat the Saudi head of state as a “pariah.” However, the president’s aides saw opportunity in reforging the U.S.’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. They began planning a fun trip to the Middle East. The stops? Israel and Saudi Arabia, where they hoped to get a Saudi guarantee to convince OPEC to increase oil production. Before the trip, Biden’s advisors met with Prince Mohammed, securing a two-part deal with the suspected journalist-killer. First, the Saudis would push a 400,000 barrel per day increase in OPEC oil production, moving up the production bump from the planned September date to July. Next, the Saudis would advocate expanding production by 200,000 barrels per day each month from September to December of 2022. When the oil kingdom met the first part of the deal, Biden announced his trip. After first stopping by Israel, the president headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 15 to meet Prince Mohammed in person. The two fist-bumped for the cameras and talked behind closed doors, leading U.S. diplomats to believe that the relationship was on the mend. By August, it became clear that this was not the case. Instead of the expected 200,000 barrel per day bump, OPEC only announced a production increase of 100,000 barrels. In September, U.S. officials began hearing rumors that Saudi leaders might push OPEC to actually cut production for October. Despite Prince Mohammed’s assurance that no such cut was coming, on October 5, OPEC announced a decrease of two million barrels per day. Now it looks like the U.S. and the Saudi kingdom are back to square one. The U.S. is now scrambling to deal with the effects on inflation and prices at the pump.
Bees play (Guardian) Hardworking bumblebees like to play just as much as the rest of us, according to a new study in the Animal Behaviour journal. Researchers found that the fuzzy insects are inclined to spin around on tiny balls, even without first receiving instruction or having other incentives. “There are lots of animals who play just for the purposes of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds,” Lars Chittka, a professor at Queen Mary University of London, told the Guardian. “This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more sophisticated than we might imagine.”

Okay but it really is the housing and car markets that are the problem. I can afford anything else I need just fine. But I can't do both of those at the same time, even at the lowest possible offers.
Also everything about cars right now feels like a scam. I can't find an affordable used car, because the insurance costs are so damn high. Deadass, used cars here are going for $20,000 - $50,000 for like 2015 models that have not only been in accidents (meaning they're damaged), but maybe only have 1-5 years of life left in them.
And like, I'm sorry. But in an affordable economy these cars would be $5000 max. I guess in other states they still are, and its got me genuinely considering taking a "vacation" just to go car shopping.
Hard part about being in the "motor state" is that we're also the motor snob state apparently. Bro I just want something affordable that can take me to work, and I don't have to babysit because it will endure farm animals, midwest rural roads, feral children, and drunk people parking too close.
Oh, and don't forget, my old, tiny $1,000/mo studio apartment is now being sold for $350,000 ($4,000/mo to temporarily rent) by the new owners. And yes, that is the correct amount of zeros. Disgusting, isn't it? I hate it here.

Thinking about Madi and how I can make my old ideas of her fit in with her current iteration
Dragonite girl, not sure if lesbian or bi but always a hopeless romantic
Her dad is a black american while her mom is I think Japanese ? They met when her dad was in the military. Neither knew how to care for their daughters textured hair, and eventually she decided to straighten it all the time.
When they settle in somewhere in the Midwest during her teen years and she manages to make and keep a friend, it's an awkward but sincere and well meaning weeb named Sam who's never been out of town. They are immediately enamored with Madison's Asian side because Midwest teenage weeb. They do both grow and learn and stay good friends into college.
Madi has always had an affinity for storybook romances and fancied herself a knight in shining armor type. At some point, likely in college, she learns that she's really more the damsel type whoopsies but she exercises and insists on getting stronger because she's learning knights aren't always so reliable.
She'll let Sam show her anime sometimes but it's not usually very appealing to her. But through Sam's interests she meets some other weebs including black anime fans and she's like "you mean this isn't just for my dorky pale high school friend" and eventually some of her new friends help her embrace her whole self including not just straightening her hair all the time but actually trying to find a style that really makes her happy.
She still loves books and fairytales and fantastical adventures, just not usually the anime kind, and she becomes a librarian so she has even more reason to keep reading. Gotta know what people are reading and what similar books to recommend and stuff.
Sweet and calm and will gladly talk your ear off about literature, but can and will knock a person clean out.

Hi Tumblypoos!
My name is Tate and I've decided to start a blog dedicated to my academic writing and shit like that. I wanted a place to publish publicly my writings because I'm an attention whore and also because what is the point of writing a bunch of pretentious academic shit without other people to read it and think you're stupid and/or argue with you? I wanted to start a wordpress, I think I'm going to still, but I'm way more familiar with tumblr.
As a mentally ill individual, I've been using tumblr since 2015. I haven't been on for a few years, but I'm back because this is a familiar environment and I know I can swear and basically say whatever I want because way worse has, and will, be said on here. As much as I would like to only be strictly feral here, I think I should have some type of decorum, so I will not be indulging on my personal life and shit talking those I hate, that I know personally. Public figures are fair game. As a tumblr veteran, most, if not all, of my personality and sense of humor are derived from this website, with that being said: I am 25, so essentially geriatric when it comes to the niche culture on here so if what I write comes across as buzzfeed millennial in any way I will be very insecure, and also probably book an appointment to have myself put down. Unfortunately, this is my inner monologue and I fear it may be too late anyway.
I'm very slowly pursuing history and english literature degrees, I think they're fun (hence the hobby blog) and wanted to go to school for something I thought was fun. I'd like to go back for human resource management and tourism and hospitality. I can defer my loans longer :) and I think I would have a wider range of job opportunities in more interesting places. I love Appalachia, which is why my blog theme is centered on that region, the user name, my literal living identity, etc. etc., but I don't want to never not leave, and I would have a better appreciation of it when I come back.
I live very close to the midwest, so in driving through (to buy my weed in Michigan (which I smoke all in Michigan before going home)) I like to compare and contrast the differences between where I live, and how people in .. Ohio .. live, the differences between western and Eastern Pennsylvania, architectural variation across the East Coast. Shit like that. Its all very niche and localized because I've never been anywhere else, and I don't frankly care that much about the cultures of the rest of the US like I do the Midwest, Appalachia & Southern states. They're important, they do have influence on these regions, obviously, and I will give credit where its due but I'm not here for them.
My mother's family is from Ohio. This portion of my family derives from Ireland, Germany, and Czech/Slovak regions. My father's family is Italian. These things are a part of why I do what I do, I think its important to the hard work and perseverance of all of my blue collar family members and what they did to get me where I am today. With the way the US is set up, after a certain point, those cultures were diminished and erased, I know nothing about any of them and so I hope that in this way I will be able to better know and understand what they went through, and who they were.
Furthermore, I love food, clothing, and cultural trends. I firmly believe I can sus out someone's vibe by the shoes they're wearing, and I think that its something that comes with practice, experience and observation. I'm a restaurant industry person, and a food person in general. I'm working on a West Virginian themed cook book, that I can start on again when the spring rolls around because there will be edible things out and about. Not animals, I'm not killing animals. So anticipate recipes and shit like that. I am also a movie snob in the worst way possible, I believe every movie I like and them all together is the best movie curation ever, and those that I don't like are bad for good reason. This is, obviously, not true, but its fun to feel like it is and I'm not ashamed to admit that.
I overuse commas, and I will not apologize or adjust to that. They make sense to me in my head and I am the most important person to me, especially here.
Love u tumblypoos xoxo
Tate :) <3

Time for your Rock Report
The Beatles recently released a new animated video for their 1966 classic "Taxman." The video drops ahead of the expanded special edition release of the band's classic Revolver album, which hits the shelves on October 28. The animated video was directed by Danny Sangra, who previously worked with the band on a series of animated birthday messages from "Taxman" writer George Harrison to John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. The Beatles announced the expanded edition of Revolver in July and released a demo version of "Taxman." In the special edition, the album's 14 tracks have been newly mixed by producer Giles Martin and engineer Sam Okell in stereo and Dolby Atmos, and the album's original mono mix is sourced from its 1966 mono master tape.
Ringo Starr has canceled the rest of his North American tour after he was diagnosed with COVID-19 for a second time. "I'm sure you'll be as surprised as I was I tested positive again for Covid the rest of the tour is off I send you peace and love Ringo," the Beatles legend tweeted. The latest update comes as a surprise to Starr's fans, as the musician and his band got back on the road just earlier this month after his first COVID diagnosis. He was forced to cancel several shows in Canada, as well as in the Midwest, after initially testing positive.
"Ringo hopes to resume as soon as possible and is recovering at home," an announcement on Starr's website said at that time. "As always, he and the All Starrs send peace and love to their fans and hope to see them back out on the road soon."

A native of Upstate New York, he lived and worked in Florida before returning to New York and joining the kitchen team at Le Bernardin.ģ stars from Eater critic Robert Sietsema Top 3 finalist for "New York's Restaurant of the Year" award, Eater Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand for great value. During the five years he served as Executive Chef of Northeast Kingdom, Kevin built a following for his seasonal cooking and devotion to locally sourced, sustainably raised and harvested ingredients. Faro, which means lighthouse in Italian, is a passion project for Kevin and his wife, co-owner Debbie Adey (Jean Georges restaurants), who together with partner Daniel Blumberg have created an ambitious yet comfortable and affordable neighborhood restaurant that’s serious about sourcing and cooking food, drink and service - a beacon for culinary goodness. Kevin Adey opened Faro in early May 2015 to showcase seasonal cooking and the art of pasta with a menu focusing on housemade pastas, organic produce, sustainable local seafood and Animal Welfare Approved meats. Adam Aamann was the culinary pick to present the story of Danish food culture at the world exhibition in Shanghai. So popular that the Michelin guide now also recommends these lunch restaurants in their prestigious guide. It has progressed to the point where traditional lunch is one of the most sought-after experiences in Copenhagen. His innovative interpretations of Danish food culture inspired a rediscovery of smørrebrød, with several top chefs picking up the tradition. This is why Aamann received the 2007 “Gastronomic Academy Honorary Award” for his efforts to make open sandwiches into a culinary craftsmanship. Aamann’s open sandwiches can easily be described as gourmet. Accarrino co-authored and released his first book, published by Ten Speed Press, SPQR: Modern Italian Food and Wine, in October 2012.Īdam Aamann is the host of the Danish national food TV-show Madmagasinet, a food consultant to other successful restaurateurs, author of several cookbooks, the owner of Aamann’s Establishment – a lunch diner with a more bodega-like feel, a jam-packed Aamann’s CPH Airport and an 80,00 square feet event and conference facility, which has hosted everything from fashion shows and product launches to weddings and large company parties.Īdam Aamann’s great success shows that the food revolution of Denmark – and the entire Nordic region – goes far beyond luxury kitchens. Accarrino has been nominated four times by the James Beard Foundation for “Best Chef: West.” FOOD & WINE named him a “Best New Chef” in 2014 and FOOD & WINE readers named him a “People’s Best Chef California” in 2013. Under his direction, the restaurant was recognized with a Michelin star in the 2013, 2014, 20 guides. The result is an intensely personal cuisine that is both technically polished and soulful and which has garnered praise from publications such as Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Saveur, San Francisco Chronicle, 7X7 and San Francisco magazine. With a strong belief in direct sourcing, Accarrino endeavors to play a role in the growing and development of many of his ingredients. His unique culinary style draws inspiration from his Italian heritage, personal experiences, and classical training with some of America’s best chefs, coupled with his embrace of the bounty of opportunities that California ingredients present. Born in the Midwest and raised on the east coast, he moved west to California in 2007. Matthew Accarrino is the nationally recognized chef of SPQR in San Francisco, CA.

"Not sure if you’ll know anything about this but it’s worth a shot! So, in my conservation bio class today, we got to the topic of animals being extinct and the eastern mountain lion. I go to college in the mountains but according to my teacher many locals claim to have seen mountain lions and even a student has seen one. I was wondering, even if there is a small population of eastern mountain lions, would they only be taken off the extinct list only after proper evidence was given and they’re shown to be able to grow or is it likely a species like that is too small to come back from extinction?"
If it was able to be definitively proved that animals in the eastern mountain lion subspecies were still alive today, they'd no longer be considered extinct. That's all that goes into that decision. That doesn't mean they'd inherently have any protections under federal law or anything, however, because as an extinct subspecies they were delisted from the Endangered Species Act in 2018.
An analysis of over 100 credible studies covering over 100 years led US Fish and Wildlife to determine that eastern mountain lions have probably been extinct for decades - plausibly since before the Endangered Species Act was even passed. Here's their statement on what they found from a media release sent out in 2018 when the official de-listing occurred: "Accounts suggest that most eastern cougars disappeared in the 1800s, killed out of fear for human and livestock safety and were victims of massive deforestation and overharvesting of white-tailed deer, the cougar’s primary prey. The last records of eastern cougars are believed to be from Maine (1938) and New Brunswick (1932)"
But! That doesn't mean the reports of local cougars sightings are incorrect! (Although, they can be, people do tend to see smaller wildcats and immediately think mountain lion). Here's the thing: western cougar populations are recovering very well, and so a lot of documented cougar sightings in the eastern part of North America are thought to be western cougars dispersing eastward. There's good data for this in peer-reviewed studies, such as this one discussing the recolonization of southwest Saskatchewan and southeast Alberta from 2015.
Probably the most notable example of this long-range dispersal was a young male cougar who was hit by a car in Connecticut, of all places, in 2011. That's so far east of what was thought to be their current range that it was pretty widely assumed the cat had to be an escaped exotic pet. But no! Camera trap data confirmed that the same individual had been seen making his long trek, and genetic analysis confirmed that he was originally from the Black Hills population in North Dakota.
Tumblr media
A lot of cougar sightings in the Midwest and points further east are - as with the 2011 cougar - assumed by the media to be escaped captive animals. A couple of years ago I analyzed the last 20 years of publicly available data from advocacy orgs that track big cat escapes and attacks, and a large percentage of the sightings of loose cougars seemed likely to be dispersed wild animals: they didn't fit the patterns you see around captive exotic pet escapes nor did the cats behave like animals habituated to people, they almost always occurred in suburban developments that were situated right next to large patches of open land and/or protected areas, and they were generally within the geographic areas where dispersal has been increasingly documented. Most supposed cougars were seen once in passing, or only a few times, and generally never were a nuisance enough to be caught or killed (excepting the ones hunting domestic animals or the ones that got hit by cars). In some cases, it was really obvious they were wild: there was one incident in McGregor, MN in 2001 where a female cougar was found attacking a dog in a suburb right next to a wildlife preserve, and two very young cubs were sighted in the area a few days later. A lot of times, local wildlife officials couldn't confirm any formal reintroductions of cougars into the area and/or referred to historical data for eastern cougar sightings when discussing the most recent sightings of wild cats in the area - so with that ruled out by the easily accessible local experts, local media defaulted to "probably a pet."
Over the years, I think the general awareness that cougars are dispersing farther east has become somewhat more common due to major outlets like the New York Times covering stories like the 2011 dispersal. But as you mentioned, on a community level, it's still sort of like a cryptid sighting! People know that cougars don't exist outside of western North America and Florida anymore, so why do they keep seeing them?
So no, unfortunately, it's pretty unlikely Eastern mountain lions are extant at this point - but that doesn't mean that other mountain lions aren't expanding into the lands they used to roam.

Assuming the facts and allegations in this story are true (and I will research further), this seals my deal against Senator Klobuchar. I sort of like her because of her snarkiness and practical (i.e., Midwest) approach to issues, but if she’s a Big Ag person, anti-wolf, pro-mining, pro-pipeline, pro-natural gas, nope, no way. My two primary issues in these primaries are the long-term stamina and guts to destroy trump and his republican party, and climate/environment. If I don’t feel confident in the candidate’s abilities and positions on these issues, then I’m not interested, in the primaries. But if Klobuchar wins (unlikely), I’ll support her, because trump has to go away.
Excerpt from this story from Truthout:
At this week’s presidential debate in Nevada, Sen. Amy Klobuchar doubled down on a particularly concerning position: that natural gas, a fossil fuel, is a “transitional fuel.” If you’ve been paying close attention to climate issues, you know that selling natural gas as a bridge fuel is an idea cooked up by the oil and gas industry.
Meanwhile, some environmentalists in Klobuchar’s home state are troubled when they consider the senator’s record on environmental protection. Since 2010, Klobuchar has pushed to delist gray wolves from the Endangered Species Act several times.
“[Klobuchar] hasn’t been a good friend of the Endangered Species Act,” said Barry Babcock, a historian and environmental advocate based in northern Minnesota.
Hunting and farming interests are no stranger to Klobuchar, who has ties to both groups. She backed bills blocking the regulation of lead tackle and bullets, which have caused lead poisoning in animals, in 2013, 2015 and 2017. One of her biggest funders in the past and on this year’s campaign trail is agribusiness giant Cargill, which former Rep. Henry Waxman once called “the worst company in the world.” She even once won the endorsement of the traditionally conservative Minnesota Farm Bureau, which has in turn advised her on legislation.
Michelle Valadez, a Minnesotan environmental activist who runs a blog called Minnesota Wildlife, said that many of “the environmentalists here feel like she’s owned by big agriculture, the livestock industry, the mining industry — that’s where her dedication is, truly.” Valadez said she sees the wolf delisting efforts as in part due to Klobuchar’s ties to the agricultural industry, as well as to the mining interests in the state: A contentious copper-nickel mine proposed by mining company PolyMet for which Klobuchar helped facilitate a federal land transfer, for instance, is in a critical wolf habitat, according to environmental groups.
Klobuchar’s dedication to mining interests is also apparent when it comes to her position on another contentious copper-nickel mining project by Twin Metals in northern Minnesota — a copper-nickel mine that other 2020 hopefuls, including Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg, have opposed because of its proximity to Minnesota’s historic Boundary Waters. One of the last actions of the Obama administration was to ban this mine; a leaked email shows her displeasure with the ban. “When you guys leave and are out talking about a job message for rural America, I will be left with the mess and dealing with the actual jobs. But you guys sure got a good story in the New York Times,” she wrote at the time.
In addition to mining, there’s yet another project that threatens the rice: a crude oil pipeline replacement sought by Enbridge Energy known as Line 3, which Babcock calls “our Keystone.”
Though Klobuchar hasn’t supported Line 3, she also hasn’t come out against the pipeline, which environmental protesters say will endanger human health and further entrench dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure. She said, instead, that she’s for a thorough environmental review — a statement that amounts to nothing but the status quo. And, when it comes to the environment, the status quo means extractive industries getting what they want.

[REDACTED] be complaining reg. the reactions of having "placed the cultist island Fortuna off the coast of Florida" while having the gall of "It’s the story & the way it’s told that should fucking matter" & "Who cares? It’s fictional geography, you idiots." Feels a bit like failing World-Building 101. I mean, Red Grave based on London would also be a callback to Dante's early concept of being a Brit.
Someone already sent me the whole post of hers that I’m pretty sure you’re referring to lmao. I’m in a particularly cunty but pleasant mood rn, and analysis is kind of my thing, so lets’s break it down, shall we?
Maybe someone can send this her way and… learn that tiny little brain of hers a thing. 😉
It’s fictional geography called world building, you idiots Karen after the cut:
‘I love how a number of shitheels have screeched amongst themselves on this hellsite about how I had placed the cultist island Fortuna off the coast of Florida or somewhere around the Gulf US states (re: the fanfic & project link in my header), whining that it should’ve been in Europe, namely Italy.’
An admission to stalking profiles is not exactly the best way to start a self-righteous rant or advertise your… magnum opus, but go off, I guess.
‘Not only that, but they whined about “plotholes and inconsistencies” without elaborating on what the latter are. The asshole who made the rant was annoyed when I used a poem as a spell in the story (“if I heard that, I’d turn off my PS4.”), but I’m sure she didn’t bitch about the cutscene before the last Agnus boss fight in DMC4.’
Like the movie The Room (2003), it’s just easier to say “all of it” is bad because “all of it” contains plotholes and is inconsistent in tone, has terrible half-baked ideas and plot threads that remain unresolved and/or do nothing to further the plot, is rife with poor + inconsistent characterization, has a lack of any knowledge how the medium it exists in is made, and in general makes me wonder how much pottery enamel you’ve been huffing to think any of this was a good idea. Howeverrrr, in contrast to you, Tommy Wiseau is kind of odd and weirdly charming both in general and about his terrible movie — he’s found glory and success in its terribleness. You, in contrast, remain a miserable cunt with delusions of grandeur.
Dante and Agnus’ Shakespeare bit is actually a pretty well known trope called Ham-to-Ham Combat. Dante and Agnus are both ridiculous Large Hams in DMC4, and when two Large Hams meet, in general, they are likely gonna try to ‘out-over dramatic’ each other. This can lead to a scene becoming either really funny or really corny (or both) really fast. If things go too far — and they do, in this case — the scene can become a Hormel Event Horizon.
‘…but they LOVE the plotholes & inconsistencies if Capcom makes the latter, and writes a terrible story! And Crapcom’s canon for DMC is as straight as a paperclip or a dog’s hind leg. Hypocritical pricks.’
Subjective opinion is not, and never will be, objective fact. People are, as of when I checked again in the last ~5 minutes or so, absolutely able to enjoy whatever media they want regardless of what the general consensus on the quality of that media is.
As an example, I enjoy The Room (2003) despite its terribleness and it never fails to make me laugh, while your magnum opus makes me want to huff pottery enamel so the pain will stop despite you thinking it is the work of an idiot savant.
‘They were also mad that I wrote Dante as a wiseguy who is a little more low-key about it due to the circumstances— instead of being a pathetic manchild airhead that tries too hard.’
You didn’t write Dante.
You wrote Reboot!Donte — a fucking terribly out of character version of him, at that.
‘I was primarily concerned about moving the story along. I didn’t care about where a fictional island is supposed to go.’
You literally had one (1) job, Karen.
‘…Meanwhile, not a single character in DMC4 had an Italian accent, so uh, why should I give a flying fuck where I put it?’
Haven’t you been like… shitting on the DMC staff… for terrible writing… this enti— You know what? You’re obvs way too dumb to notice that contradiction, so I’ll let it slide.
Just… a word of advice, if I may? Don’t ever watch dub TV shows. That last brain cell would fuckin’ just burst all over your carpet.
(Actually, don’t watch subtitled shows either. An extremely popular anime that was set in Italy just wrapped and all the characters — le gasp! — spoke fucking Japanese. You would shit.)
‘I wasn’t paid to write any of what I wrote, but be my guest & send a PM if you want to throw money at me. By all means, do that.’
Tumblr media
Oh, thank fuck, because they would have been ripped off, big time.
[ btw, you sound p. jealous of people that write/do creative work/commissions for ko-fi/payment tho. Not a good look tbbh. If it’s any consolation, though, I don’t get paid for making fun of you and/or analyzing your dumb bullshit, either. :( ]
‘The pricks at Capcom didn’t even bother giving us a proper DMC4 and it was a half-assed game, with the latter half being hasty filler material. The “special edition” they coughed up in 2015 was just glorified overpriced DLC.’
Ya know, you gotta be pretty far up your own ass to think this much of your opinion. And I’m saying this as a person that’s pretty far up her own ass like 85% of the time.
‘And another thing, Redgrave City in DMC5 seems to be in England, yet no survivors speak with English accents or slang/dialects.’
Pretty sure no survivors had speaking roles.
If you played the game you’d know this.
‘Meanwhile, Dante and Vergil had lived there when they were kids (until age 8), but they both have ordinary American or Canadian accents. Furthermore, how did the twins make it to the USA or Canada? According to the little booklet in the DMC1 game case, Dante’s office is in modern America.’
You know that invoking the imagery of a specific place without naming your location is normal and standard practice, right? Overwatch even does this (For Ex: Byōdō-in (平等院), Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan is the inspiration for Hanamura, Château de Duingt, Duingt, France for Château Guillard, etc.)
Furthermore, you know the original DMC was a rejected first draft of Resident Evil 4, right? This is what retcon is for. You at least know what retcon is, right?
‘…That information isn’t very important, but I’m bringing it up to illustrate a point that being a fucking pedant about geography in a fantasy game is idiotic, even if the setting is akin to modern Earth.’
So is freaking the fuck out and sending death threats over a fantasy game but you didn’t let that stop you either lmfao.
It’s actually super important to establish your scenery and the way your world operates, especially in a written work in which readers are dependent on your vision and your descriptions, and if you were a decent writer, you’d know this.
‘It’s the story & the way it’s told that should fucking matter.’
YOU HAD ONE (1) JOB, KAREN.
‘What US states are the Arklay Mountains located in?’
General description puts them in the U.S. Midwest. Raccoon City itself is stated to have a population of ~100,000 at the time of outbreak, and the only city in the Midwest that matches that population in 1998 is Springfield, Missouri, with a pop. of ~110,000.
Springfield is on the Springfield Plateau of the Ozarks region of SW Missouri. So they’re part of the Ozark Mountains.
This all took less than ~3 minutes to google, btw.
‘Where is “Zanzibar Land?”’
I actually just wrote a comprehensive answer to an ask a few weeks ago about this. It’s actually stated to be in Tselinoyarsk (Целиноярск), the (fictional) area of the former USSR in which Big Boss carried out the Virtuous Mission/Operation Snake Eater in 1964. Tselinoyarsk itself is heavily implied to consist of parts of Kyrgyzstan and/or Tajikistan. If you played MGS3 you’d know how important the setting and the varied environments/climates are to the game mechan-
oh yeah wait you believe in segregation of story and gameplay mechanics. I forget you’re completely tone deaf sometimes lmao.
How far is ‘Salem’s Lot or Derry from Bangor? Who cares?’
Stephen King does, quite a bit. He even has a map on his website of ‘his’ fictional version of Maine:
Tumblr media
My disappointment is immeasurable, Karen.
