“We who believe in freedom cannot rest, we who believe in freedom cannot rest until it comes, until the killing of Black men, of Black mother’s sons, is as important as the killing of white men, white mother’s sons. We who believe in freedom cannot rest until it’s won.”
—ANNE BRADEN
The next time a racism apologist tries to say, “don’t blame them, it wasn’t their fault, that’s just how people were back then,” tell them that’s just how the shitty people were. And remind them of Anne Braden and all of the Black people who knew that racism, discrimination and bigotry were wrong. For every bad era in American and World history, there have always been good people who knew right from wrong, and who had the courage to act on their convictions.

can you recommend historical romances (regency era up until 1900 vibes) that are “realistic”? i know you make a point in your charlotte bridgerton fic that eventually all the bridgerton make respectable marriages. all of them are conventional but that’s something i act—i enjoy that both main character and love interest are of the same social standing and therefore don’t have to “struggle” to get married. do you have any books recs (series would be preferable but i’m good with standalones!) like that?
also love your writing!! really want to know how charlotte reacts to clairmonts proposal lol - your charlotte is probably one of my favourite characters because she has that perfect understanding what it means to be a woman in that era which i just love
Sure! Here's are some recs I have for historical romances where the heroine and hero are of a similar social standing. Obviously, this is HR and what's "realistic" is still pretty.... not, because that's the genre, but I get what you mean.
What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long: Genevieve is the daughter of a wealthy gentleman, and Moncrieffe is a duke, so no social obstacles there. Moncrieffe wants to seduce Genevieve out of revenge for her brother sleeping with his fiancée but obviously, his quest for *revenge* is thrown out the window within 20 seconds of meeting her. Also, you get the sense that both characters are not only deeply aware of one another, but they're very socially aware.
The Bride Goes Rogue by Joanna Shupe: Set in Gilded Age America so you'll still get your balls (including a French ball!) and whatnot. Katherine and Preston are both a part of the Upper Ten Thousand and are actually betrothed. But Preston refuses to honor it and Kat goes a little off the rails (in a fun way) as a result, they're both conducting a "no-strings" (ha as if) affair. Also, Preston is deffo trying to get *revenge* on Katherine's dad, so there's a pattern here.
Marquess of Meyham by Scarlett Scott: Leonora is the daughter of an earl, and Morgan is a marquess. This is another *revenge* book since Morgan's grand plan is to ruin and marry Leonora and make her miserable out of revenge for her half-brother Alessandro (possibly?) having tortured him during the Peninsular War. I don't talk about Morgan enough, and honestly I should because he goes HARD on the "whose pussy is this" bit during sex. Him and Alessandro (or Sandy, as I affectionately call him) are hot messes and I love them both.
The Truth about Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden: Jane's the daughter of an earl, Harrison is a duke. He marries her to save her "honor" after his fuck-up brother fucks up. The best thing about his book is how Jane slowly breaks Harrison using her "wiles" after they're married and how much Harrison is OBSESSED with her hands, her tits (in that order!), and eventually, her.
And I'm glad you enjoy Charlotte/Clairmont- they're my babies. I'm trying desperately to get the next chapter across the finish line. I will say, I think Charlotte has an imperfect understanding of what it means to be a woman in that era because her understanding only goes so far as aristocratic womanhood. But my dream in the future is to a) write a fic or maybe even a novel with a more expansive notion of womanhood in the Victorian era, and b) the ultimate dream which is to somehow incorporate a Charles Hamilton Houston-esque legal strategy to overturn Plessy, but in this case, for women's rights in the Victorian era with HR heroines somehow spearheading the effort. Basically, a systemic, strategic plan to attain rights one by one without jumping straight to suffrage which is what I've seen a lot of HR writers do. Which annoys me a little.

The Benefits of Being an Octopus -- Perspective
It's that time of year again!
Each year, right at the end of the school year, we read a book in the 6th grade called The Benefits of Being an Octopus, by Ann Braden. It's a personal favorite of mine, one I reread again and again each year. And each year, the end of the book makes me cry those big crocodile tears, because damn if it doesn't hit hard for me.
I like to make posts about this book, though I haven't actually made it a tradition. I've only made one other post, about the phrase "suck it up" that's used in the book, and how it really felt impactful to me as a trauma survivor -- a reminder that I needed to face my troubles, rather than just avoiding them. It was powerful when I first read it, and it's still powerful today.
However, it's time to look at other aspects. Care to look with me?
Each year, when I read the book, I realize how different the kids are. My first year, the kids were... immature. There's really no other way to say it. These were kids whose last years of elementary school were stolen from them by a plague. They had no socialization at a very very fucking important age, and that fucked things for them in a major way. The next year, the kids were... well, disenfranchised I think makes the most sense. They did not give a single shit. They couldn't. They had bigger worries.
This year... The kids cared. The kids felt. The kids... feel a little too much.
These are kids that are well aware of the world around them. We read about the war in Sierra Leone and they didn't bat an eye; we discussed child soldiers and they made jokes about war, because to them, it was normalized. It was natural. In what world is an 11 year old desensitized to this? I had to impress upon them early that these things hurt. That these things weren't just readings, but true things people go through. And I think, by the time we got to BoBaO this year, they finally got it.
Each year, I have to explain that, no, the main character cannot just stick her food in the air fryer, because they can't fucking afford one. This year, I had kids explaining to me that the chicken nuggets would probably not be fully cooked in the toaster she made them in, and that could lead to her getting sick, and that's just another sign that being in poverty leads to further issues. These kids, remember, are 11. It's so vitally important for them to understand what people around them are going through, but they get it so well. I had kids opening up to others about their own trauma; one student discussed with her table how she lived in poverty, and how the only thing that helped her was her grandmother dying, because of the payout. And even then, that led to a discussion about how people in America can't afford to die.
Like... We can all agree how fucked up that is, right?
But at the same time, I'm teaching these kids that the abuser, Lenny, was abusive the whole time. They can't see it. They don't get it. That same child came to me and said that everyone was being too harsh, and that Lenny probably was hurting too, and that's why he lashed out. I had to very gently explain to her that abuse is never okay, even if there's a reason for it. And her heart was aching for that man, because in the end of the story, the people he was abusing left him. "How will he afford things now? Shouldn't he get another chance?"
I cut off my family in August. And these insights from the conversations I'm having -- about how the systems that oppress us lead to further oppression, or how people are still hurting and that doesn't negate the pain they've caused -- has really put a lot of my own healing into perspective.
It's a running commentary in the planning room about the kids we see growing up. Students spend the majority of their time with strangers they call teachers, and their parents rarely raise them. I think to my own experiences as a kid in school, and I realize just how... different it all is. And I wonder if those comments we have in the planning room were said about me. Particularly, "that's a kid whose parents are going to lose him." We say that frequently about the students who have helicopter parents. There's nothing we can do -- we aren't actually the parents of these kids, after all. But there's something so... insert an emotion here that describes what I feel when I look at these kids and see who I used to be. Like...
I see these parents, hovering over them, and I wonder, do they know that they're Lenny? Do they know that they're discrediting their children? Do they realize the amount of manipulation they're using, and how I am teaching these kids to recognize that? Do they know they will lose them?
Did Lenny know?
This year, more than any, I've gotten asked if there is a sequel to this book. And I always have to tell them, no. And they always respond with what they want from the sequel that isn't -- "Zoey escapes poverty" being a big one, or "I wanna see what Aurora is like when she grows up!"
I sat down one afternoon and thought about the potential sequel. I know what I would write, if I wanted to sit down and write fanfiction for this novel. I know, as a traumatized person, that Zoey's life isn't just going to be magically fixed... I want her to be a social worker when she grows up, someone who fights hard to protect kids from people like Lenny. I want her to be traumatized like me, but in therapy for it, and working hard to overcome her struggles.
But I also... weirdly want to see her siblings struggle. I want to see the bullying they experience. I want them to cut off the mom, who yes, was helpful, and yes, she tried her best, but fuck that, she still hurt them, she still neglected her children due to her own abuse--
And then it all gets fuzzy, because I hit too close to home.
And I wonder... How many students this year felt that too?
And I wonder... How many of you, out there, are feeling that right now?
Looping this back to syscourse (as I do often here), I just... wonder how many of you really understand that the things being said here about trauma aren't hypotheticals. That the things you cannot comprehend aren't just random accusations. They come from a place of hurt and inner truth, even if you cannot wrap your head around it. And that isn't to say some of you aren't traumatized!!! From my perspective, nearly everyone participating in syscourse is traumatized in some way, even by way of participating in these spaces. That counts. It always has.
I see so many posts each and every day just... showing utter confusion about the other side. "How could anyone think that? How could anyone possibly defend that?" And I just shake my head, because...
How could anyone possibly stay with Lenny? How could Zoey not see what her friends were going through? How did the mom abuse her, knowing what it would do? How could Fuchsia not tell anyone, how could Silas not explode, how could, how could, how could-
You aren't them.
You aren't these other people. You assume bad faith so often, just like the people in the story, and that's what led to them getting stuck. At some point, you need to push through, and the only way out is together.
There's a really good pair of quotes we focused on this year, and the kids really struggled with those quotes. One was a metaphor about a pond of algae. This isn't direct, but it's something like... "When you're stuck in a pond of algae, you turn green. It doesn't matter how many times someone tells you to stop." When... people are in that space -- when they're stuck in abuse, or they're in these angry settings, or whatever have you -- they mold to that space. No matter how often people explain that it's bad, or try to get that person out, if they are still in that situation, then they're in that situation until they aren't anymore. Telling people to stop being traumatized will never make them not traumatized. Telling people to just... Get With It? Won't work.
The second quote was something along these lines: "Sometimes you just have to have your back up against the wall to understand what you're made of, and you just haven't had that happen to you yet."
There's a lot of talk about oppression and prejudice and ableism and... lord, every buzzword ever in syscourse. But I feel like a lot of people don't get it. They don't understand those back-to-the-wall experiences, they don't see it in the people they're communicating with.
How do you get it if it hasn't happened to you?
Well. You do what my students did and you learn about it. You research. You grow. You try to look past the edge of your own nose, your own experiences, and see that there is a whole, big, mighty world out there, with people constantly going through things you couldn't even comprehend. And for fucks sakes, you listen to them. You acknowledge what they're saying. You realize that they are being true to their experiences.
And you stop calling those experiences into question when you express your confusion.
Learn to have your back-up-against-the-wall with them. Learn to find the wood for the raft together, instead of watching them drown in confusion: "Why don't they just swim?" you ask, but you let them keep drowning instead of helping. Help each other!
Isn't that what we want these kids to do?

Can you rec more books with the hero and the revenge plot but of course falling in love in the process?
For sure!
Historical:
The Return of the Duke by Lorraine Heath. The hero in this book lost his title/family when his father was convicted of treason. So it's a matter of both revenge and proving his father innocent (both because dad and because title) and getting some revenge, and the heroine HAPPENS to have been his father's mistress. HOT.
Glory and the Master of Shadows by Grace Callaway. Wei isn't out to get revenge against GLORY, but an extremely traumatic backstory and a desire for vengeance is very much a part of this story. Fun fact: Grace was in part inspired by wuxia with this book, and that is SO COOL and you can see it as you read the book. Vengeance is something you see featuring in a lot of wuxia films.
The Marquess Makes His Move by Diana Quincy. The hero in this book is both getting revenge and getting validation against the heroine's husband, as he fucked him out of his land, I believe? So he's disguised as a footman while doing so. But oops, now sexual tension is developing between the hero and that horrible dude's wife...
Never Seduce a Duke by Vivienne Lorret. As far as the hero knows, the heroine stole a priceless book from him (an Arthurian cookbook, it's crazy) and he comes upon her years later and wants the book/revenge. However.... they did fuck before she seemingly ran... and he did leave behind a bit of a SURPRISE with her...
The Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe. Clay agrees to teach Florence how to operate a casino (she wants to open one for ladies) while secretly plotting revenge against her father. Yet, oops: he played himself.
Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath. The classic book in which Mick Trewlove sets out to seduce his legitimate brother's fiancee as a part of his long-term revenge against his father.
A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean. My favorite MacLean--Bourne knew Penelope when they were kids, and then lost everything in a gambling situation. Years later, he returns and forces her to marry him as a part of his revenge plot wherein he's collecting all his land again (part of which is now connected to her dowry).
She Tempts the Duke by Lorraine Heath. This isn't a revenge against the heroine situation, but the hero is consumed by a desire for revenge after his uncle tried to kill him and his brothers when they were young--the heroine was his childhood sweetheart. It's like one of those things where he needs to decide if he can let himself love her or if he's going to be obsessed with vengeance, and it's honestly really lovely.
A Rose at Midnight by Anne Stuart. The HEROINE wants revenge against the hero because he essentially abandoned her and her family to the Reign of Terror. She actually tries to kill him at the beginning of the book. Check your triggers, but it's deliciously good.
No Good Duke Goes Unpunished by Sarah MacLean. The hero wants revenge against the heroine... after he finds out she's still alive... because she accidentally framed him for her murder....
Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas. McKenna and Aline fall in love as teens, but her father forces her to send him away. McKenna seethes in raaaage for years, then comes back as a successful businessman to seek revenge against Aline.
What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long. The hero in this one was cucked by the heroine's brother... so he decides to seduce and ruin the heroine as revenge. Unfortunately for him, she gets wise FAST.
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale. Allegreto is motivated by a desire for vengeance and, you know, dominating part of Italy. He forces Elena to marry him to further his plans, only to find that she's his weakness. Check your triggers!
The Last Crimes of Peregrine Hind by Sierra Simone. M/m edition. Peregrine kidnaps the dandy hero for revenge, and essentially, bargaining and BDSM ensue.
The Madness of Viscount Atherbourne by Elisa Braden. The hero compromises (ruins, really) and marries the heroine as vengeance against her brother, who killed HIS brother in a duel.
The Ranger by Monica McCarty. The hero in this one is a spy behind enemy lines--and those enemy lines are run by the guy who murdered his father. And the heroine... is that guy's daughter. Fab.
Paranormal:
Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison. The hero, a godlike dragon shifter, kidnaps the heroine to get revenge on her for stealing from his horde. The theft is one penny. Fortunately for her, he is quickly like "SHE IS THE PRETTIEST GIRL IN THE WOOOORLD".
Lothaire by Kresley Cole. Lothaire's entire motivation is a 67-step plot to reclaim TWO different vampire thrones, as revenge for being disinherited and also losing his mother, because of course he has mommy issues. Acquiring his Bride and getting his full power is a part of that, which is why he kidnaps Ellie and plans on destroying her soul to install the goddess he thinks is his REAL Bride, because his Bride can't be a hillbilly, right???? (he's an idiot and I love him)
Dark/Mafia:
Mafia Madman by Mila Finelli. Enzo kidnaps Gia in order to get revenge against her brother-in-law, Fausto, for blowing up his life. Unfortunately, Gia is an amazing nightmare woman and therefore his perfect match. This stands alone, but I do think it's better if you read Mafia Mistress and Mafia Darling first. They're both so fun.
King's Captive by Amber Bardan. The hero kills the heroine's father and then sweeps her away to his private island... ostensibly for revenge. The twist ends up being what he's seeking revenge FOR. Notable for the "sensually masturbate to the mixtape I gave you while I stand on the other side of the door".
Fantasy:
The Winter King by C.L. Wilson. Wynter began a literally war to start a war against the heroine's family, as they killed his family. The war ends, he marries the heroine as a part of the treaty, but he isn't done with the whole vengeance thing yet...
A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane. The hero wants revenge against the heroine's father for a similar reason--killed his family. The heroine, however, offers to marry him and help him seek revenge because she wants her own revenge. Famously, this is the one where she jacks the hero off using her brother's blood as lube. It's INCREDIBLE.

Princeton University professor of African-American studies Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor tied recent racially-charged events into her presentation at the 12th annual Anne Braden Memorial Lecture in Middleton Auditorium. Her Nov. 1 speech landed on the same week as high-profile mail-bomb attempts, the Pittsburgh synagogue mass shooting and Louisville’s race killings. She spoke about these incidents, the rise of “white terror,” the intertwining nature of capitalism and racism and the role that activist movements play in political change.
Quintez Brown at University of Louisville, first published in The Louisville Cardinal, Nov. 7, 2018. Princeton professor traces the rise of “white terror” in Anne Braden Memorial Lecture
Kamala Harris was the reciepient of on of the 13 mail bombs mentioened here. I am an old white guy. I suspect that it's harder for white people like me to spot and piece together "white terror." We ignore it at our peril.

So I just finished Elisa Braden’s The Madness of Viscount Atherbourne and honest to God I’m proud of myself for finishing the book.
To be fair it’s a decent book but the plot and trope of “I’ll marry the sister of my enemy for revenge” is a great trope but I’ve seen it done better.
Scarlett Scott’s Marquess of Mayhem and Julie Anne Long’s What I did for a Duke are both really good books with this trope.
But both Lucien and Victoria are on the cusp of being not only a compelling couple but compelling individual characters as well and imo Elisa just never gets there. It’s more like their conflict is a stepping stone in building Harrison (Vic’s duke brother and the next book in the series) up. I get some authors have favorites (I’m looking at you Kleypas) but they manage to make their other characters interesting enough to stand on their own while also boosting up their fav. Elisa also manages to make me utterly hate the name Colin. The execution of the plot is mid at best. I don’t like how a certain aspect of the book (the reason for said revenge) was handled at all. The sex is great but not enough to make me ever look at this book again.
I think the only time I ever really got annoyed at a main couple was when I read Scott’s Nobody’s Duke.
Anyways, on to Harrison’s book.

12/30/2022 CFB Transfer Portal Update #3
As promised, I am going to pick 5 college football teams that I think have used the transfer portal as an advantage to help their teams as we take a diving look into the 2023-24 college football season.
Michigan Wolverines
Colorado Buffaloes
USC Trojans
Florida State Seminoles
Michigan State Spartans
The Michigan Wolverines have been among the most active teams in regard to the transfer portal as they initially saw a handful of players enter their names to leave Ann Arbor. At that, we have also seen many of the top names choose Michigan with little competitive interest in other schools. They brought in players who have multiple years of starting experience on the offensive line (Drake Nugent, LeDarius Henderson, Myles Hinton) as well 2 of the best transfer defensive linemen (George Rooks & Josaiah Stewart) along with a stout linebacker from Nebraska named Ernest Hausmann.
The Colorado Buffaloes might have the biggest roster makeover out of any team in the country since the hiring of their new head coach Deion Sanders. This far into the signing period he has already brought 6 of his former players with him from Jackson State to colorado including his son and soon-to-be starting QB for the Buffaloes along with the # 1 player in the portal Travis Hunter. Coach Prime has also done a good job adding players from other schools around the country such as Clemson, USF, and West Virginia.
The USC Trojans start up right where they left off last season, at the center of attention regarding players in the transfer portal. USC has added multiple players to fill positions of need and get better depth. They bolstered the defensive side of the ball with the additions of Christian-Roland Wallace, Kyon Barrs, Jamil Muhammad, and Mason Cobb. All 4 are proven starters and more importantly, sure-tacklers on a defense that had problems wrapping up and completing tackles. On the Offensive side of the ball, they added a top receiver from Arizona in Dorian Singer and a lineman from Florida named Michael Tarquin.
The Florida State Seminoles have had one of the biggest splashes by any program this recruiting cycle as they locked in commitments from top linemen on both sides of the ball in Jeremiah Byers and Braden Fiske as well as other big men from schools such as Miami and Colorado. My favorite player the Seminoles picked up is Tight end/H Back Jaheim Bell from South Carolina. Bell will play a big role for the FSU offense with the versatility to line up all over the field.
Michigan State has been actively adding big bodies to their team for the upcoming season. They have 3 new tight ends transferring from different schools in which they all garnered significant reps. They also added two runningbacks to their historically run-heavy offense. In my opinion, the biggest gets for the Spartans were along the defensive line where they added an interior lineman, an edge, and a guy who can play both. They will especially be tested when playing conference games next season in the blistering cold knowing they have to stop the run.
Of these 5 teams, the Michigan Wolverines and USC Trojans will most likely rely on their transfers the most while they look to hold their spots as college football bluebloods and stay in the hunt for a college football playoff berth in 2023-24.

Special guest-host Dirk Rogers joins the Grue Crew for this episode, picking the much-mentioned, often disparaged Trog (1970) which stars Joan Crawford (in her final film role) and Michael Gough. While the makeup/”mask” of Trog looks fantastic, the rest of the costume fails to live up to the title’s promise, generating more chuckles than gasps. The film is often cheesy and full of plot holes with ample amounts of questionable science; yet, somehow, Trog manages to be entertaining and fast-paced, wasting no time getting to the creature and the conflict between scientist Crawford and the corrupt town asshole Gough. Shenanigans ensue. The Grue-Crew share their thoughts on the film, the cast, and the effects of this early Seventies creature feature.

January 14, 2024 @ 12:25pm
Attendance: Ed and Bernadette Hamilton, Mary Carter, Camille Norman, Deacon Dan Dykstra, Stephanie Edison, Carla and Ron Parish, and Jean Christensen
Deacon Dan opened the meeting with prayer.
Motion was made to accept the November minutes as written and no corrections were made.
OLD BUSINESS:
Gym Floor: It was recommended, moved and seconded with final approval by the Bishop’s Committee to pay Sexton, Ron Parris, $5,500 to complete repairs on the gym floor. Ron will receive a deposit of $2,500. The contract includes cleaning the stage underneath, which has been completed; previous work of varnish will be removed and recovered, and other items listed in the contract including putting the planks down to replace the damaged wood, no wood putty, and put down the floor materials purchased. The fee will be split at $2,750 between St. George’s Church and St. George’s Community Center.
Mortar flaking will be addressed and Ron will be in charge. The price was quoted as $60 for four (4) large cans. It is a spray on product. This still needs to be addressed in our November meeting. Ron was not present, out of town, and no report was made.
Deacon Dan will talk to Rev. Matt Bradley about the Homeless Project. St. George’s is able to provide meal/s for the group. In discussions, the committee felt that we could provide meals. Further discussion is needed to determine the number of times we could make the meals available for the people and if it would be dinner, snack bag, or breakfast food.
New Business:
Deacon Dan suggested two new projects for St. George’s.
People in the Pews Project – Deacon Dan would compose a letter asking Episcopal Churches to send a person from their church to worship at St. Georges. It would be a one-time visit or more if the people desire to continue coming.
Braden Committee Prep – St George’s and others would watch the video on Anne Braden’s life as a group.
Coats and Blankets Project: Mary stated that Church of the Advent will start to send items of clothing to St. George’s. Angie Mills from St. John’s in Murray, KY will participate. St. John’s Youth group will visit Louisville to go out and take items to the Homeless with us in December. A date for this event has not been set.
The monthly financial report was presented as of October 31, 2023 by Deacon Dan. St. George’s Episcopal Church has total assets of $27,574.49; the Community Center has total assets of $6,311.41. Both accounts joined together show assets of $33,885.90 representing our total liability and equity. Again, the only sources of income for the Center are the monthly check from the Diocese and private donations.
Reminder/s: We may not receive a Bishop’s visitation this year as Bishop White is recovering from an eye problem. Our opportunity will be based on the Bishop’s recovery this year, 2024.
Monday, February 12, 2024 is the date set for our annual parish meeting. A virtual option will be available.
Meeting adjourned at 12:25 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Bernadette Hamilton

DTC can move everything as long as it is not in the middle of the gym floor. Ron will be there on Tuesday to discuss the setup with the delivery team from the main DTC office.
Mortar flacking: Ron stated that he has completed the mortar flacking.
Deacon Dan will talk to Rev. Matt Bradley about the Homeless Project. St. George’s is able to provide meal/s for the group. In discussions, the committee felt that we could provide meals. New Business:
Financial Considerations: 1) Convention fees will be paid by St., George’s Church for delegates and clergy. 2) All Saints Camp fees are part of the consideration and 3) “Garden in a Box.” If approved all three would be included in the budget.
The Budget Report for March will include the amounts spent for 2023. This is due to delays in meetings for Christmas, the weather and no major issues needing to be addressed during November, December and January. Deacon Dan will take all monthly income of receipts and checks to our accountant.

Minutes: Bishop Committee Meeting
March 11, 2024 @ 5:15pm
Meeting opened with prayer from Deacon Dan.
Attendance: Ed and Bernadette Hamilton, Mary Carter, Deacon Dan Dykstra, and Jean Christensen
Prayer: Deacon Dan opened the meeting with prayer.
Reading of Minutes: Motion was made to accept the January minutes as written and no corrections were made.
OLD BUSINESS:
Gym Floor: After discussion, it was suggested that the gym floor needs at a minimum, two (2) more coats of the material used for sealing the floor, and a remover is still needed in some areas. The edges and front need to be repaired. We need to put down the tarps for DTC to continue moving products.
Homeless Project: Deacon Dan reported that the Homeless Project has been delayed until January 2025.
New Resident, Jupiter the Cat: Our cat is here. He is housed in the DTC refrigeration room. He is an adult male, five (5) years old, and fully vaccinated. When he is nervous, he hisses and bites. He has food needed for his transition in his cage, a smaller hut in the cage to sleep in with a blanket. He must be seen at least once a day and remain in his cage for two (2) weeks. At this time, Jean has taken responsibility for his care along with others. The main thing is not to let him out of the doors.
Open House Partnership: The Partnership will meet on March 17, 2024 at Christ Church Cathedral (CCC) at 10:30 am. St. George’s arrived for the morning worship service and stayed for the coffee hour afterwards. Other churches came after their service was complete. We had a good time eating and enjoying fellowship with our Episcopal brothers and sisters.
Parochial Report: Warden Mary is waiting on the pin number needed to finish the report.
Safe Guarding: Camille connected with the Safe Guarding Committee. Two documents were sent to her iPhone pertaining to convention delegates and clergy. It includes children and adult safety guidelines. Rev. Witt Stodgill is in charge. Camille will make contact with the committee. A link was sent by Camille to get us started. I have completed the Ministry section. I was able to print my certificate.
New Business: The Budget Report for March will include the amounts spent for 2023. This is due to delays in meetings for Christmas, the weather and no major issues needing to be addressed during November, December and January. Deacon Dan will take all monthly income of receipts and checks to our accountant.
Balance for St. George’s as of Date: ___________________ is $________________________
Balance for the Community Center as of Date: _______________ is $____________________
Holy Saturday: It will be held at 12 noon at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Everything will be in black.
Dare to Care: DTC needs to contact the main office for oil change locations for the delivery truck. The truck now has its new license tags. Mary is writing a letter to our neighbor next door. He parks in our van area space. The space is only available to him when we are not using the area.
Leadership Positions: Ron Parris has been asked and accepted to function in the capacity of Program Director for the Community Center. Because we are not a full parish, he cannot use the title of junior warden. Brother Ron is excellent in his role as a director or securing and recognizing program needs of the St. George Community. However, he is still the sexton for the church and a van driver. An official vote was called by Warden Mary Carter and the vote was a unanimous YES.
Jean Christensen has been asked and accepted the position as Event Coordinator and will maintain the calendar and remain in the position of directing church members as to refreshments needed for events. Any request for us of the facilities by outsides persons should go to Jean. She will discuss with Ron and Mary for availability and if the event is appropriate for the church space. This includes the church and the center. An official vote was called by Warden Mary Carter and the vote was a unanimous YES. Both of the above positions are voluntary and will meet with Mary Carter in her office in the Tachau House which will be cleaned and shared by all three.
Notes: People can get married in the church but it must be an Episcopal Priest and they must go thru counseling.
If you are interested in the Resolution for Forestry Treatment that happened in 2018, please talk to Camille.
Carla Parris has purchased the new laptop for recording records and paying bills.
Reminder/s: We may not receive a Bishop’s visitation this year as Bishop White is recovering from an eye problem. Our opportunity will be based on the Bishop’s recovery this year, 2024.
Monday, April 8, 2024 is the date set for our next parish meeting. Meeting adjourned at 5:57pm. Respectfully submitted, Bernadette Hamilton
