in a very very tame sense of it, watching mukbang videos is like engaging in darkship

okay so now that I'm have your attention, let me explain-

so like, most people who are Darkship agree that engaging in darker and more taboo forms of fiction are usually a means for catharsis, right? Regardless of why they're into a darkship, either for coping or just for finding it interesting, one of the main motivators I've seen for getting into it is the level of catharsis engaging in fictional taboo topics provides!

which brings me to the point of comparing darkshipping with mukbang videos;

so like, the main reason I've seen people enjoy mukbang videos is cause of like, catharsis, and/or fascination. not necessarily enjoyment. right? like watching people eat a bunch of stuff you yourself, and doing so in such a messy way, can be cathartic sometimes!

like. I haven't seen people watch mukbang videos because they like watching people eat a bunch of food at once in a messy manner. usually, people describe it as being interesting, fascinating, or intriguing to watch, but not like, enjoyable. and while I'm sure there are people out there who genuinely enjoy watching mukbang videos, I don't think they're the majority.

this is kinda how I view and interact with darkship fiction. I don't necessarily enjoy it, but I am fascinated and interested in it. It's cathartic, I enjoy putting characters into extreme situations to help work through emotions and actions I myself can't really engage with irl (usually related to my intrusive thoughts, which are very distressing!) because they would be harmful to both myself and others.

this doesn't mean I don't enjoy the darkship pairings I engage with, it's just that the enjoyment for me personally is intertwined with the catharsis it gives me as an emotional release

and for antis and the like who are like, 'just keep that to yourself! why do you have to post it publicly???' well, it's for the same reason many people post vent art. to find community. to try and help others who are going through something similar. to show that we aren't alone or broken for having those sorts of feelings. to find others like us.

The point is catharsis. enjoyment can be found in the catharsis yes, but the main motivation is (at least for me I guess) finding catharsis through fiction.
