the fact that on the anniversary of the warsaw uprising, one of the most heroic actions against nazi occupation in poland (emphasis on one of, because of course there were others, but still), there is a nationalist march going through warsaw, is fucking vile and disgusting. those people are closer to the historical occupants than the occupied. people who died in the fight against fascism in 1944 are probably rolling their graves right now, and i don't even want to know what the still alive survivors, like my great grandpa, feel about this, because i'm afraid for their health if they get so angry at 90 something years of age.

Hey can we stop pretending like the only feasible reason that a trans woman would not like the term femboy is because she's some puritan anti-kinkster or somehow against men being able to dress femininely?
Like perhaps maybe the group of people who had to go through a phase of having to figure out and explore their femininity while being perceived by society as a man DON'T WANT to police the way men are able to present and express their genders? Like maybe WE DON'T want to make things even harder for transfem eggs. Like maybe we might have an interest in protecting transfem eggs and are speaking from the harm that we experienced as eggs ourselves?
Like maybe it might have to do with the fact that outside of Tumblr your average femboy is a trap fetishist? Like did we all forget the memes of "trying to figure out if the Astofolo icon is a trans woman or a fascist?"
Like some of us were discovering our transness during puberty in the early 2000s. You remember the early 2000s right? Where South Park and Family were at the height of their cultural influence, the R slur was a substitute for stupid, and bigotry was so common that "traps are gay" jokes could be made in polite company without having to worry about backlash. So imagine what kink spaces were like. Especially when you're a teenage trans girl just discovering herself.
I personally was so damaged by that experience that I began to believe that my gender-no my EXISTENCE was a fetish to be embarrassed and humiliated by and to be reviled for. I genuinely did not engage in relationships because I believed I was going to have to give in and tell them that they fell in love with a sex object. I did not believe that I was worthy of love. And it took YEARS of working through that for me to be comfortable with transitioning.
And after I worked through that I still have to deal with them. They haven't left kink communities they had their roots in. To this day there's a kink website I frequent that has community suggestions for tags IE: Unless the OP of the work goes back to delete this feature, anyone can "recommend" deletions or additions to the tags of the work. This is in place to make the proper labeling/searching/blacklisting of kinks easier to help curate content. In practice though it allows transmisoginists to basically graffiti any transfem artwork they come across. And let me tell you Femboy tags are getting added on right after they replace F/F with M/M on a transbians t4t work. And it happens so frequently that I have to check in about once a month to these trans tags to inform the most recent victim about what's happened to their works.
And outside of kink spaces I go into fandom spaces where I have had to deal with trap fetishists positioning themselves as fucking lore scholars when they harass trans positive folks about the Correct and Moral gender of the transmisoginistic character that they've got a fap folder dedicated. I got to see someone rise to twitch fame off the back of trap content turn into a “femboy icon” because he gave some of the trap money to trans charities and has a trans girlfriend. Who is still making trap content by the way.I've gotten to see reddit lose their absolute goddamn minds when the term Trap was banned from r/anime, shitting themselves so hard about it that they made their own separate website with transmisogynistic wojaks on the home page and everything. And then I got to see the fucking Bridget Debacle.
The reason I always talk about Bridgets trans confirmation is that it's the most widely recognized recent event where the exact shit I'm talking about was on full display. The reason why her being confirmed as a trans woman was such a big deal for trans girls was not just because she was one of the anime caricatures with her own folder in the trap enthusiasts masterbation portfolio. It was because she was GROUND ZERO for original coining of the word trap. And the EXACT same guys who deemed her a trap were now coming out in DROVES fuck EN MASS. But this time as self appointed femboys. We had so many examples of fucking Astofolo icon twitter facists trying to drudge up any type of left sounding argument using the femboy identity after having their initial arguments revolving around mistranslation were debunked. Crying that transfems were “stealing femboy representation” and trying to say that it was an “antitransmasculization force feminization trope” ironically. You know the cry of “Let men be feminine!!!!” y'all always bring out in defense of femboys. THAT'S who you're parroting! THAT'S who you got it from! We have had direct evidence of former trap fetishists dawning the term femboy when it became less cool to be openly transmisogynistic and then started appropriating leftist language to give their transmisogynistic arguments an air of legitimacy.
Like y'all need to understand that this magical space we got here is a FUCKING BUBBLE. Femboy communities in literally every other online space are former trap/sissy communities and are fucking cess pits of transmisoginy. I have seen posts by people who's only experience being around femboys was on Tumblr go out and check a place like r/mildfemboys to be horrified by the obsessiveness of the transmisogyny the femboys they interact with. And the femboys here aren't much better by treating being forced to acknowledge that these people exist and that is a still very active part of their community even if they don't personally interact with it as a personal attack on them and their gender presentation.
Y'all just want to pretend it doesn't exist and treat the idea that a Transfem might not WANT to interact with YOU(OH GOSH!!) because of it like it's some sort of personal judgement instead of something you're just going to have to accept happens when there's a large portion of people who share that title who are responsible for traumatizing them. But y'all got to go one step further. Y'all who go on about how femboys are our closest allies and about how “femboys and transfems are actually closer than transfems want to admit”. Y'all treat femboys like they're out little fucking brother in the queer community and it's our personal fucking responsibility to leave behind any personal baggage at the door in order to make them feel welcome.
Y'all can't handle the fucking idea that a trans woman might not be comfortable with sharing community with someone who's average member would call her a trap while jacking off to her selfies if he thought he could get away with it. That's she's not interested in playing the Astofolo icon game with them. Y'all gotta create a backwards narratives where she is against her own interests, where she is for making it harder for eggs in the future instead of you know. Asking for better from the communities those eggs are drawn too.
I have been forced to fucking put up with femboys in nearly every online space I've ever been in. And I
Am sick and fucking tired
Of putting up with femboys

Two days in a row now, I’ve had anti-Semitic (seemingly Christo-fascist leaning) graffiti on my office door whiteboard at work. In a year and a half at this faculty job, that whiteboard had never been used for anything but routine messages—until now.
I’m a lot more shaken now that it’s Day 2; a single occurrence, I could maybe have waved off. Unless they catch who’s doing it, I know it’ll be there again tomorrow.
I do not fucking support the Israeli government. I do not fucking support Hamas. And this stuff hasn’t even been discussed extensively in any of my classes, so I’m almost positive it’s not a student doing this.
The graffiti appears between hours when only facilities staff are going through our office wing. My department chair and co-workers are rattled, too, and HR has been brought into the situation.
If I’m even quieter here than I have been due to moving house, there’s now this thing. I just…fuck all y’all out there using the present circumstances against Jews and Muslims everywhere.

But they just want to pee in peace 🙄
Female students at one of Latin America’s top Universities say trans activists staged a coup of a single-sex washroom on their campus, and have left some gender critical women and lesbians fearing for their lives.
On August 24, feminist students at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) were confronted by trans activists as they painted a lesbian pride symbol on a wall near the Samuel Ramos Library. Speaking to Reduxx, a witness who prefers to remain anonymous said that the activists began hurling verbal abuse at the women who were painting the lesbian labrys.
“They called them TERFs, colonial fascists, and transphobes,” the source says, noting that shortly after, additional activists from the Queer groups on campus joined in to harass the female students. The women desperately tried to appease the crowd by talking with those who were outraged.
“The women tried to engage in a dialogue, but found that the trans activists only wanted them to paint a symbol for lesbianism they agreed with.”
Shortly after, as a result of the lesbian symbol that had been painted, the trans students reportedly declared that they “did not feel safe” on the campus and went to administrators to demand a gender-neutral washroom be established in that area.
While administrators agreed to create one, the students did not wait for it to be designated. Less than 24 hours later, the activists took over the largest female restroom, which was on the second floor of the Faculty of Philosophy.
As part of their symbolic coup, the activists vandalized the walls outside of the washroom with anti-feminist and pro-sex trade graffiti.
Tumblr media
“Less abolitionism, more whoring,” and “less TERFs, more sex” were among the slogans painted outside of the washroom. The “female” bathroom designation was also erased and replaced with “gender neutral.”
The source within the school says that the washroom that had been seized had once been considered one of the safest for women on the campus. Sexual assaults at UNAM are so common that the University recently had to install emergency buttons inside of the cubicles of women’s washrooms.
As a result of lack of safe alternatives, as well as a reluctance to give into the demands of the trans activists, female students have continued to use the washroom, but now report lengthy wait-times and queues as male students have also taken to using the “gender neutral” facility due to its size and convenience.
In response to the bathroom putsch, some feminist students on campus attempted to mark the washroom with their own graffiti.
Photos from inside the washroom taken last week show some feminist slogans have been written on the mirrors and walls. One reads: “if you want a unisex washroom, take it from the men! Don’t violate women’s spaces,” while another asks the activists to respect the rights of female minority students.
But other photos snapped inside show violent threats have now emerged, directed at the women. One, which was menacingly placed near an assault crisis button, reads: “rape and death for TERFs.”
Tumblr media
Feminist students reportedly tried to make the University aware of the threatening graffiti, and documented its location for administrators to have it cleaned up, but the University claimed it “couldn’t find” the violent slogans despite it being marked by the women.
The source within UNAM reported to Reduxx that administration has been ordering the removal of the feminist graffiti, but allowed those made by trans activists to remain up, including the death and rape threats.
In a statement issued on August 26, the University appeared to express support for the trans activists who had taken over the female washroom while condemning those expressing “discrimination” towards them.
“The technical council … agreed to categorically condemn any expression of hate, violence, or discrimination towards gender-diverse students,” the statement read. “This is no place for those who undermine the human rights of people who make up our community.”
Tumblr media
Apparently emboldened by the University’s lack of action, trans activists have been targeting lesbian and feminist students in an effort to intimidate them. Gender critical women on the campus who have tried to organize formal protests against the seizure of the washroom have been faced with harassment.
“They have begun a witch hunt against lesbian feminists who belong to student organizations,” the source at the University told Reduxx. She continued that female students known to be opposed to trans activism are being particularly targeted.
“They follow [us] to the bathrooms, hoping to find [us] red-handed painting graffiti,” the anonymous source says. “They want to silence us, it is a witch hunt.”
Commenting on the incident, Women’s Declaration International Mexico representative Laura Lecuona expressed outrage at what has happened on the UNAM campus.
“UNAM, and in particular the Faculty of Philosophy, has been a breeding ground for transgender policies for years,” Lecuona tells Reduxx. “In recent months, the violence of different anti-women groups has increased. They have impunity, with the active and passive complicity of [University] authorities.”
Lecuona says the University has been actively imposing gender ideology on students, and that there has been multiple incidents of trans activists on the campus forcing the administration’s hand under threat of unrest. Lecuona explains that earlier this year, trans activists on the campus demanded that a video explaining the difference between sex and gender be deleted from the University’s systems.
“It seems that the authorities are terrified,” Lecuona says. “They make it very clear who they want to protect. Time and again, [UNAM] has shown that their campuses and faculties are not safe spaces for women.”
Lecuona alludes to the statement issued by the University, and asserts that while administration is buckling to the demands of the trans activists, feminists and lesbians on the UNAM campus have been showing tremendous resolve in the face institutional condemnation.
“Under the passive gaze of those who should be protecting our freedom… our bodies are attacked and our words are attacked. If the authorities are afraid, feminists will not be.”
Trans activism is closely related to pro-sex trade activism in Mexico. In July, a transgender politician aggressively disrupted a government conference aimed at tackling human trafficking after becoming offended at the implications abolitionist policies would have on trans “sex workers.”
Maria Clemente, a trans-identified male politician elected to Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies last year, called the suggestion that the sex trade be abolished for the protection of women and children “hate speech.” To a critic, Clemente said: “I am a woman, and I am a whore!  It’s my job and and how my family eats! I love it!”
Sex-based violence against women in Mexico is considered to be among the highest in the world, with the country’s femicide rate continuing to rise even as the general homicide rate falls. 85% of human trafficking victims in the country are female, with women and girls overrepresented in every form of the crime, including organ trafficking, forced prostitution, and labor exploitation.
By Nuria Muíña Garcia Nuria is a news contributor and the head of Spanish translation for Reduxx. Nuria is a passionate advocate for the rights of women and girls, and seeks to connect feminists across borders. A Spanish native, Nuria currently lives in Switzerland.

A merry fuck you to
The pro-forced birth activists who spent decades bombing clinics & murdering doctors and then going "oh no, that's not what we meant at all ;)" handwringing about Jane's Revenge & how anti-abortion people :( are threatening vandalism :( this is so scary and dark :(
A media that seemingly forgot all pro-forced birth violence and joined them in handwringing about how some graffiti is A Sign Of How Divided We've Become. What's a Dr Tiller, the mean leftists put some graffiti on a wall
The centrists condemning the same by saying "um we won't 'take action', we'll win this AT THE BALLOT BOX!" Legit saw someone saying they may protest, but what matters is winning this at the polls
Those same people refusing to codify Roe into law in any time they had the votes to do so bc it was Too Divisive and it was Already Settled and not worth broaching (meanwhile, the right is already talking about trying to enact a federal ban, and the court is already discussing overturning the legality of gay marriage, contraceptive legality, and gay sex)
The justice who proposed that's wife supported a fascist coup to overthrow the government btw and I guess nothing's going to happen with her or him?
The lawyer-brained assholes trying to explain blatantly partisan decisions as some Austere Legal Doctrine, even when the actual legal doctrine is absurd nonsense like "if a right wasn't written down explicitly in the 1700s, it can't exist, no matter if the right entails things that didn't exist then

A story about a wall
Tumblr media
This wall is in my old neighbourhood, and it didn’t always look like this. When I was a kid, it was painted grey and was always covered with graffiti – not art, just words and phrases and maybe a symbol. The majority of these, I’d say about ~60%, were football-related.
[rival team fans] you are cunts
[neighbourhood] belongs to [our team]
[rival team fans] we fuck your mothers
suck our cocks [rival team fans] faggots
And so on. Another ~20% were anarchist.
free [political prisoner]
down with the state
anarchy forever
fuck the army
And so on. Another ~10% were otherwise political. The names of big and small political parties (and some MPs) showed up at election season, not scrawled with spray but painted professionally with rollers in huge letters. Sometimes a union urged people to join a strike or rally. Very very rarely a fascist graffiti would show up, but it would get defaced immediately. There were a lot more anarchists than fascists back then.
And the rest was about love and/or lust.
[name] I love you
I miss you so much
[name] when will you let me fuck you?
the ass is hell / and the cunt a well / and he who ass never tried / goes to Hades blind
And so on. Defaced graffiti was a big part of the wall. People spared no spray cans crossing out each other’s messages, and at times it all looked like the deranged scrawlings of an eldritch abomination, you couldn’t make out a single word.
Tumblr media
And here’s a very important detail about that wall: it’s facing an elementary school.
My school, to be exact. Small children (i.e. we) would go out to the schoolyard at recess, look across the street, and see what I just described. Needless to say, a lot of adults were quite displeased with this situation. But what could they do? The mayor would send a cleaning crew once in a while, but 5 minutes after they left someone would inaugurate the freshly painted wall, and a day later it would be full again. Walls in cities be like that.
AND THEN, long after I was gone from the school, someone had a stroke of genius. They said, we’re not gonna paint the wall that awful monochrome grey again. Instead, we’ll cover it in street art. BUT, we won’t ask street artists to pitch their ideas. We will ask the children of the elementary school to come up with the designs, draw them themselves or pick them from wherever they want. We’ll hire a crew to paint what they chose. And we’ll make sure everyone knows that the children picked the street art. Which heartless bastard will spray over that?
AND IT FUCKING WORKED. The football hooligans, the anti-authoritarian rebels, the politicians’ stooges, the unionists, the lovers, the assholes: no one had the heart to spray over that. The street art went up, and stayed up. It didn’t get defaced, it didn’t get covered, it’s still there. (Not quite unblemished, there are still margins where football fans do their thing, but it’s a very small percentage of the total surface.)
Tumblr media
yeah, that part looks like the old wall
So while the street art itself on that wall is not particularly jaw-dropping, its origin story is just crazy. I’m sure that the children weren’t given totally free rein to pick designs, and that teachers and/or the city council made the final choice. And it’s probably they who picked the theme – bicycles. All neat and proper and kid-friendly. Still, one little rascal managed to slip this past:
Tumblr media
“Till theft give us parts”, i.e. bicycle parts, get it? (DON’T JUDGE THE PUN, IT WAS A LITTLE KID.) And it makes me so happy.

listen the fuck up, i think (HOPE) all of yall are antifa on here, but for WHATEVER REASON, the only time y'all care about fascism is when it happens in countries you know a lot about. I'm tired of the only political shit discussed being America or some fucking western European country.
there's a very prominent neo-nazi party in georgia (WHICH MY CLASSMATE IS A PART OF????), with extreme conservative and puritan views. see the armbands and the flag in the back? that's the georgian neo-nazi symbol. don't ask me why the faces are blurred, my source for this is the nazi classmate himself, and he blurred it.
Tumblr media
brief summary of how this sorry excuse of an organization formed: they broke into a nightclub because "DANCING IS SINFUL", destroyed the club obviously, beat up everyone who was there (girls, guys, university students, bartenders, EVERYONE). where was the police, you may ask? one of them was drunk and JOINED these shitheads, the rest showed up hours later for "unrelated reasons" and pretended none of it happened. you'll see that cops doing jack shit will become a reoccurring theme in this post. this all branches from the extreme upholding of "orthodox christian values" - they're doing all this in "God's name", AND THE CHURCH SUPPORTS IT. obviously, fascism in Georgia existed even before these fucking cunts, but they're growing stronger and recruiting more people these days.
SO, WHAT PROMPTED ME TO MAKE THIS POST? these days, they've gotten more physically aggressive. here are some examples:
they asked a random guy in the streets about his opinion on fascism, when he said he doesn't like it (FUCKING OBVIOUSLY), they beat him up (the police did JACK SHIT and pretended that the part security cameras glitched out WHEN THE NAZIS LITERALLY FILMED A VIDEO OF THEM DOING IT)
they killed a dog and kept beating it after death, and they beat up cats in the street (they filmed these as a video too)
they beat up the leader of a governmental organization Girchi, which is the most progressive party we have right now (with anti-governmental, anti-russian, and antifa anarchistic ideologies)
the Girchi leader was supposed to hold a lecture about politics for kids and uni students at a summer camp thing, and the nazis ATTACKED THE CAMPSITE AND THREW STONES AT PEOPLE.
update on the first one: an armed man in civilian clothes entered his HOSPITAL ROOM, some women tried to stop him, TURNS OUT HE WAS A COP, AND NOW THE POLICE IS PRESSING CHARGES FOR "ATTACKING A POLICE OFFICER"??????
1 - They didn't know he was a cop, 2 - they didn't even attack him just tried to stop him from going to the kid's bed because he was a threat, 3 - HOW THE FUCK ELSE WOULD YOU REACT IF A STRANGER WITH A GUN ENTERED YOUR KID'S HOSPITAL ROOM AND TRIED TO GO NEAR HIM?????
anyways, this shit is scary. the nazi party is recruiting minors, like my classmate, so that if they ever get arrested, the minors will have to be released because OBVIOUSLY nobody's gonna HAVE A 14 YEAR OLD ROT IN PRISON. even if they were all adults, as i mentioned, the police don't care, because they're doing this in the name of Christianity. they're posting xenophobic, homophobic, conservative and very christian nazi bullshit so that they can make people believe that they want what's best for people, BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF GEORGIA SHARES THOSE IDEOLOGIES. their name is literally "Geo National Unity" TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE THEY'RE DOING THIS TO "HELP" US. EVEN IF THEIR IDEAS WERE MORALLY CORRECT, WHY THE FUCK AREN'T THEY BEHIND BARS FOR WHAT THEY'RE DOING??
i know I'm not the most coherent source of information, i know this just looks like a stupid rant, but this information isn't accessible in English, which means NOBODY OTHER THAN US GEORGIANS KNOWS WHATS GOING ON. the later this shit stops, the more fascists there'll be in Georgia, because no one wants to put a stop to this. cops are fucking pigs, as always.
I AM SO FUCKING SICK OF THIS. I'M TIRED OF SEEING SWASTIKA GRAFFITI ON WALLS AND SCHOOL DESKS. I'M SICK OF FEELING THREATENED JUST BECAUSE I'M OPENLY ANTI-NAZI AND SOMEWHAT OPENLY QUEER. I'M SICK OF RELIGION BEING AN EXCUSE FOR THESE FUCKING DEGENERATES. NOBODYS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I'm sorry for getting fucking emotional on a post that's supposed to be informational, but SOMEONE had to fucking say it. progressive people in non-western countries are in fucking hell, because nobody acknowledges any problems in places that doesn't concern them. anyways please fucking reblog this, for awareness and for help and what-fucking-ever. thank you for reading.

Person arrested in connection with antisemitic threats at Cornell
BY HANNAH GILLOTT
A person has been arrested in upstate New York in connection with a potential hate crime at Cornell University.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed that a suspect is currently in custody, affirming that she is "committed to combatting hate and bias wherever it rears its ugly head".
The FBI were notified of a potential hate crime at Cornell University over the weekend after a series of “horrendous” antisemitic threats had been made against the school’s Jewish community in online posts, according to the college’s president, Martha Pollack.
Messages sent included threats to shoot Jewish students, and posts encouraging others to harm Jews. Authorities response to the Centre for Jewish Life on campus – which students were warned to avoid “out of an abundance of caution”.
Rabbi Silberstein, from Cornell Chabad, told the Jewish Chronicle: “These antisemitic posts were designed to sow panic and hysteria, which they, unfortunately, succeeded at generating. The fact is that by showing panic and fear we play into their schemes”. He said that although “the administration should respond to this with the fullest seriousness… the rest of us should take it for what it is - a cowardly threat and nothing more”.
This was not the first instance of antisemitism at Cornell, whose campus was recently defaced with graffiti reading “Israel is Fascist”. One Jewish student told CNN that such incidents are “really, deeply troubling and upsetting”
Antisemitic incidents in the US increased by nearly 400% in the days after the attacks by Hamas, according to the Anti-Defamation League, with universities a hotspot.

Splatoon and Commercial Countercultures
When Splatoon came out it actually reminded me a lot of Jet Set Radio.
Tumblr media
Not necessarily game-play, but the imagery and themes in both games. Both are about music, urban life, fashion, and turf wars fought between rival gangs through graffiti. The color palettes of both games are a mix of urban greys and beige and vivid bright colors. Even the “hosts” or “narrators” of both games being musician media personalities. I’m not the only one who sees this. There is a lot of “Jet Squid Radio” fanart mashing up the two games, even this song.
Tumblr media
But I think major difference is summed up by the fact that in Jet Set Radio, the bad guys are the cops.
In Jet Set Radio, you are in an actual gang fighting other gangs, the DJ is running an licensed pirate radio station, the fascist police force have no problem shooting someone who is merely defacing public property, and the big bad is a corporation trying to swallow the entire city.
And in Splatoon, the “turf war” battles are a commercially-organized team sport, re-enacting a war that took place 100 years ago in which the opposing Octolings were banished to underground bunkers. In Splat 1 and 2 the solo missions are to fight the Octolings. The game even takes time to mention that the ink you paint vanishes after the match is over, so you are not actually defacing public property. (To be clear, all of these things are much more conservative and much less subversive)
One thing want to make  clear is although I am highlighting the contrasts between these two games because of their relative similarities, Splatoon was never obligated to be Jet Set Radio, and I am not trying to criticize the game for being something it was never intending to be. Jet Set Radio was made by a smaller studio, with less restrictions, and at the time SEGA was taking bigger risks on trying to court its target audience.
But that being said, no matter how much I love Splatoon, I feel like it doesn’t have anything to say at all. These aren’t anti-authority, anti-capital games, or games that ask tough questions at all. They’re games about supporting a status quo. I think Octo Expansion and parts of Splatoon 3 explore some interesting topics, but never in a way I think is all that challenging.
And obviously, Nintendo is never going to say anything radical in the same way that Disney isn’t going to either. And a game marketed to an older audience can have a edgier message than a game marketed to all ages. But I think its an example of how counter cultures get hijacked by corporations, which then have the power to change and control the messaging of these cultures.
Tumblr media
Brands need authenticity, they need cultural relevance. Culture is just extremely important in marketing. Corporations are always going to be the loudest voice with the furthest reach, so when a corporation takes over a culture or movement, the corporation has more power to control the messages, values, even practices and beliefs of the culture than the people who belong to that culture. And that means that if a culture’s beliefs run contradictory to the needs of a corporation, the corporation can co-opt that culture and redirect its messaging and values.
A kind of goofy but very recent example was the “De-influencer” movement on Tiktok. It started as a reaction to trends like #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt, where consumers just showed off products they purchased after seeing them on TikTok. A slew of TikTok users tried leveraging their influence to tell people to stop buying products because it isn’t worth it. De-influencing sprang from a place of authenticity. But in a matter of days, Influencers hijacked the movement and changed its message. Instead of “don’t buy things you don’t need,” they quickly used the hashtag to pan certain products and tell viewers to buy alternatives instead. Just completely reversing the intent of the message and intent of the original movement.
In the fifteen years between Jet Set Radio and Splatoon 1, street art and graffiti culture has gone mainstream. Businesses are decorating their walls with street art. My office took our team to a “street art class” to learn graffiti. So, the reason why Nintendo could make a game about street art is because by that point street art had gone mainstream. We are also seeing an industry that is maturing, getting more refined and relying less on riskier strategies.
Tumblr media
If I had  to interpret the intent behind Splatoon, I’d say they were trying to create a fun, colorful space where self-expression is encouraged, and the teen characters are unburdened by authority figures. These things are all very “safe” for a mainstream audience. And I think that is why the games accidentally attracted a huge queer audience. To a queer audience, those things (fun, colorful, self-expressive, no authority) are all still radical ideas.
Maybe it was a perfect storm of different little things that add up to a product the LGBTQ community cares about. The shooter genre is bleak and often pretty toxic, and Splatoon created a space for a niche audience that rejects those things. The characters themselves are androgynous and fluid, and you’re free to dress and style yourself however you’d like. There is a lot of unopposed freedom that its going to be attractive to certain communities. Splatoon accidentally made the type of sandbox that a queer gamer audience wanted to inhabit.
And while Splatoon’s queer following might not have a major influence on how future Splatoon games are made, it doesn’t discount the fact that the LGBTQ community has a strong presence in online Splatoon spaces. Corporations can try and control the message, but they can’t control how we think or suppress counter cultures.
And I guess I am also considering some of my own thoughts about the two games as well. I know this is all over the place, sorry. Jet Set Radio was made for people of my generation, which is why it resonates with me more. Different generations need different messages and that’s fine. But either way, corporations still have the power of what messages go out there. I doubt SEGA would publish a game like this now if it was brand-new, but they wouldn’t have published it in 2000 either if the message was too contradictory with SEGA’s goals. Capital is not going to release anything with a message that is a threat to its bottom line.
