Persephone hating Hades. I once made a Hermesephone AU where she also hates Hades and this is part of that. I'll be making another Hermesephone comic in the future 💜

even ignoring everything else wrong with lore olympus (which in itself feels impossible) there is just something really egregious and insulting at the way a "modern retelling" over an ancient greek myth just full-heartedly whitewashes the entire culture and mythos.
and it's not like rachel is the first to do it - greek myths and legends have been whitewashed for centuries, depictions of the gods have been categorically stripped of their ethnicity and origins long before rachel got a hold of them. it's the fact that rachel goes out of her way to insult the original myths whenever she can, that she emphasizes and pushes a western-centric mindset and viewpoint over and over and over and not only reinforces the whitewashing, but continues it down the line.
like, this is the first episode.
Tumblr media
rachel goes out of her way to mock the original styles and wardrobes of the ancient greek world, and i get her attempt was to make persephone feel "out of place" with the more "modern" clothing that the other gods wear, but it really just does more to a) demonize demeter, who is almost always in traditional clothing, b) sexualize persephone.
go even broader with it, move away from the clothing itself, and rachel doesn't even bother to use any of the ancient traditions that are core to the myths. like for the love of god, she uses a christian wedding for persephone and hades!
Tumblr media
greece is the birthplace of modern democracy and had a powerful judicial system, and rachel instead uses the modern / western iteration of court because ... why not
Tumblr media
(completely unrelated but the inserts of everyone except eros and aphrodite come from the stupid zoom session zeus had back when he first charged persephone with treason, meaning we have proof yet again that rachel isn't drawing the characters into the scene, she's making pngs and sticking them into pre-arranged backgrounds downloaded from stock images)
and there are ten thousand more examples i could pull, because this is just the whole entire comic. you can look at a lot of modern adaptions and see where things have been modernized respectfully, and where they are done with disdain for the source material - no one is claiming percy jackson, for example, is perfect, but the author took a great deal of care in his research, and the love for the original myths and culture shine through. lore olympus has zero respect for the original stories, exemplified in how rachel demonizes demeter - the actual crux of the myth. it's bad writing and bad research and further attempts to whitewash a rich and storied culture that had people from so many walks of life, who existed in full spectrum of lgbt identity, who did not conform or even know of the world that exists today. you can modernize without erasing it, and rachel's refusal to do so is one of the many issues tacked to lore olympus.

lmao this was shared in ULO, either WT was a lot more optimistic about the animated show when they partnered with Hot Topic or Hot Topic jumped the gun big time 😂

That's not a 19 year old. That's a child.
Short women exist (I'm one) and some can look younger, but not this young.

With the announcement of two new original stories by Rachel herself, I’ve been oscillating between “let her try cooking again” and “we’ve already seen what she did to the Greek pantheon she should be relegated to lunchables”

honestly, as a lesbian, the "this all-female religious group has taken a solemn vow of chastity, pledging to remain virgins all their lives... so they get around it by having sex with each other 😜" trope is a red flag when written by literally anyone other than a lesbian

Been floating around the Lore Olympus Critical tag and I gotta tell you, the second to last episode of this series is actually kind of a joke.
Like I *wish* any of what was going on felt like it was supposed to matter. But it just seems like I was dragged around being promised some kind of story to be met with what is the equivalent of watching paint dry.
Ouranos was set up to be the penultimate villain, the final bad thing, and OF COURSE, he acts just like Kronos in terms of childish villainy, and there is just no pay off to any of this.
Oh. And Metis and Rhea got summoned from the not dead anymore because... I guess?
And like, all of the fertility goddesses just fused together and are obviously going to win because girl boss power? And I'm all about that sure but... Mind you that Persephone is a totally shameless and advantageous person with her position as queen of the underworld. Hera is, putting it mildly, a bitch and a racist-- MINIMUM. Metis was extremely manipulative of her daughter and kind of to Zeus as well, not including the fact it was later implied she certainly could have done more to help the usurping. Rhea is probably the "least" problematic of the bunch but also at the same time IS SHE THOUGH?
I dunno, I'm glad it's over. Can't believe I made a text post about this, but I wanted to throw my two cents somewhere while watching my husband play Mass Effect 3 lol.

..the fact Persephone hasn't dealt with Apollo. Is so..irksome.
And her own mother doesn't even know about what he did. But HADES knows??
Like..why include such a plot if you won't take it seriously?? It's fucking insane.

It's hilarious when people praise lore Olympus artstyle as if isn't just a kawaiified version of corporate Memphis

Made edits of Zeus and Metis (second) meeting, the first time was brief and with Hera, Demeter and Hestia where he was asking for help to set his brothers free to which she initially objects to. She comes around eventually though when she gets to know the tyrant’s son better.
I don’t like the direction canon took because it was unnecessary and has weird implications, so I’m sticking with my original headcanon which is a more guardian/maternal figure in Zeus’ life and the others. I know in the og myth they were a thing but we’re not talking about that, this is LO. I restored Metis’ warmer colors, her shade was all over the place this chapter. Her characterization puts me off too, not like how she was first introduced at all and for some reason she reminds me alot of Daphne(who I already don’t like). Idk, her attitude just doesn’t strike me as the Titan goddess of wisdom and good counsel at all.

my energy has been low lately so i've stuck to just liveblogging chapter releases, but i was thinking earlier about why lore olympus really nettles me and it's truly indicative of a wider issue.
it's disappointing that a major ancient religion that is still practiced by some people today has been reduced to a caricature of itself, and i say this knowing that there are thousands of reinterpretations of the greek myths, there will always be a new opinion or retelling of them. retelling the myth of hades and persephone isn't necessarily the issue, so much as the constant and dripping disdain to the cultural roots. we don't need to be greek to appreciate the story, but why remove everything greek from it? why westernize every aspect and remove ties to the cultural roots? why whitewash everything from a myth thousands of years old?
part of the reason these myths continue to resonate with us is because the themes are still relevant today. the loss of a child, the struggle against impossible forces, the (often patriarchal) powers against you, a mothers love. these stories hold power, they gave hope and inspiration, they created meaning and connection, and they were vital to the people who lived in that time, in that place. they will resonate with us for many years still, but stripping the roots and core of it out only makes it a hollow, shallow imitation. it's reality tv with neon colours, no love or heritage present; it's cold and shiny and plastic, and it insults what it claims to portray.

Rachel you coward
I went all out on the Dyonisus redesign and made his hair mimic grape leaves, added a few spiral wounds because I think his birth wouldn't have been without accidents. Hope it's good!
I also edited in Chiron instead of Hades because. C'mon.
