Which ANTM cycles hadd the most likable and most hateable casts?

Most likable:

Cycle 4: I generally liked everyone looking back, the top 10 were all pretty great other than a couple incidents from some individuals

Cycle 6: no explanation needed really

Cycle 8: some all-time great personalities/characters here

Cycle 13: other than a few exceptions (primarily just Kara/Ashley/Lulu) it was a pretty pleasant group

Special shout-out to the top 5 of the British half of C18, I adored all of them

Most hateable:

Cycle 14: I hesitated to put this one since there are several contestants I love (Krista/Angelea/Alasia/even Jessica in the first half) but most of the others were either insufferable or denied any meaningful screentime.

Cycle 19: personality-wise I didn’t particularly like anyone besides Nastasia (who was basically invisible). My feelings ranged from indifference to varying levels of dislike.

All of the Boys/Girls cycles (20-22): there were a few exceptions in each cast that I enjoyed, but the vast majority were annoying as fuck. Cycle 20 especially.

I've been doing america's next top model rewatches/watching through seasons I never caught the first time around on hulu since late last year + sometime during covid media boredom setting in, and it's super weird because around cycle 18-20 it's people who are like... my real life age now, so there's an awareness while watching of "oh they are babies," and then with c20 as the co-ed season, "WHOA there are a couple of creeps mixed in here sniffing around the babies???" (bc if you are in your late 20s... you have NOTHING to say to an 18yo), and then if you look at folks' social media it's also like, "what the fuck! you're an adult now!" or "OH you grew into your grown-up face! good for you!" but you return to the show footage when they're 18-22 and go, "ah, now that I can see the baby fat on you vs how you look at 28, you are the extreme baby."

tell me why their positioning in this shot made me feel like last night they were studying in kirishima’s room sitting across from each other at a table alone together and kirishima was like ok it’s time and reached out for bkg’s hand and bkg was like “what are you doing” and kirishima got kinda flustered like “uh- if you don’t want me to then I’ll stop” and bkg said “that’s not what I want” but he didn’t mean it like ‘stop holding my hand’ he meant it like ‘i want you to actually make a move already asshole’ but kirishima thought he meant ‘i don’t want to be anything more than friends’ so he got down on himself like “i think i’m gonna call it a night then” and they haven’t talked since except today they were scheduled to take some promotional pics for ua so they’re sitting as far away from each other as they can and kirishima’s trying to play it off like normal but kinda overacting and bkg’s just not hiding that he’s in a bad mood but nobody expects anything else from him and then on the bus ride back they somehow end up next to each other and don’t say anything but when they get back to ua kirishima realizes he fell asleep on bkg’s shoulder

What are your thoughts on the later seasons of antm like 18-24

When it comes to the later seasons, it was a huge change compared to the old school cycles for sure! The shoots became a lot more legit and serious; it reflected real-life modelling as opposed to the goofy shoots we’d see in the old-school ANTM back in the day. So for that, I give points to the layer cycles.

Cycle 18 is one of my favourite ANTM cycles because as a Brit myself, recognising the BNTM girls, it really piqued my interest and I was so invested in that entire cycle. The drama was on point, the shoots + photos outta this cycle are brilliant. Laura, Annaliese, Sophie, AzMarie and a few more were such geniuses when it came to the shoots!

Cycle 19 had potential but it still leaves this bad taste in my mouth. Didn’t really care for the contestants as much, I just liked Leila (obviously rooting for her) and Kiara form what I remember seemed like a sweetheart. Laura annoyed me and I heavily disliked Kristin. I don’t really remember the rest of the girls tbh. And that irritating and stupid ‘public voting’ system did my head in! Like, this ain’t Big Brother uk🙄

Cycle 20 was an utter snoozefest omg! I think we all knew Jourdan was gonna get the W from the start! She just had that model aura about her! Marvin was spoon-fed, constantly being saved till he was 2nd place after all of his lacklustre photos all cycle. But all in all, what a dry, stale cycle smh.

Cycle 21 was like the lightbulb finally being switched on! This cycle was an improvement, but every time I rewatch it, I always start halfway because the second half was a lot more entertaining to me. The shoots got better as opposed to the previous cycle. I loved Lennox and Adam’s personality sometimes. Keith seemed like a sweet guy but his photos were so boring. Apparently Trya had a crush on him, favoured him and therefore giving him the win. Loved the Elvis/Marilyn shoot btw!

Cycle 22 I loved! I’ve watched it the most out of all the later seasons! I consider Mikey and Nyle to be the most photogenic in this cycle. But then again, honestly everyone were flawlessly photogenic!! Lacey and sometimes Mamé led the cycle for sure, Stefano was a dreamboat but his aloof and sour personality was…. yuck. I loved Devin’s personality, I really did but his trio/pact with Mikey and Ashley + their antics was so catty to me, giving me Bad Girls Club vibes🙄 I could go on an on about other contestants but you’d be reading all day😂

Cycle 23……… I’ve never watched it🙈 I’ve just seen photos from it. India always reminded me of Gigi Hadid. But I’ve never had interest in watching it, solely because Trya was replaced with Rita Ora and that just felt foreign to me.

Cycle 24….. Krystyana and Jeena were insanely robbed😭😭😭 the first cycle I watched while everyone else was, as opposed to years later. my favourite shoot was the sandwhich beauty shots, the paper magazine one was fun too! Tyra’s presence seemed a bit dry for some reason, guess she’d been off the show for too long.

okay I'm in cycle 21 of my ANTM watchthrough and it is so fascinating to see this edit that they've given Chantelle/Winnie Harlow, because I have heard that she's kind of bitchy irl, but I'm also aware that 1) people are running up on her being fake familiar because they've seen her on tv, and that's not respectful, 2) she's at her job, and 3) it's a career she took on with full awareness that she is in no small part capitalizing on a highly visible disability she has had to contend with (including people being cruel, disparaging, dehumanizing, and clearly fetishistic about it) for her entire life... and it is of course a disability she will continue to have & which people will feel very entitled to remark on for the rest of her life going forward.

on top of the realities of being a racial minority as well, because, let's face it, the complaints about her redoing her hair & makeup are bullshit because that is in fact the living day to day reality of being a working Black model, let alone one for whom, again, obviously, makeup matching is going to be something even other Black models can't necessarily help her with + is going to be something that lbr most white professional makeup artists will not be remotely equipped for given her vitiligo. like most celebrity models don't talk about it, but working Black models & a LOT of Black actresses do as a baseline, because the default qualifications to become a hair & makeup professional specifically exclude competence in Black hair & makeup.

and so like... is she standoffish on the show, is she at times rude, at times a bit unprofessional? sure. so is everyone else. they're all literally like 20 & on a pretty cruel game show. but she comes across to me as someone who is a bit brittle at times because she can't let the entire experience & commentary on her appearance become personal. she's been through that before, and at the end of the day, it's a gig. but I think she defaults to footage that lends itself to a "fake" "ice princess" edit because she's also trying not to be the angry Black girl who keeps shit too real for the cutesy reality tv gimmick (you can't tell Tyra Banks to her face this is just an opportunity you're capitalizing on lol, you have to be good tv, same as how the pre-selected front runners are very obvious at home... I'm sure that's the case for them, too), or let herself be turned into a victim OR a bully by a false narrative.

I didn't watch this cycle through when it first aired, though I was aware of it, but historically ANTM losers tend to do wayyyy better than the winners in general, and she's very much one of the most successful contestants that show has ever had. but it's funny to see those intersecting themes behind how her footage was presented, like they wanted a "snobby girl" but don't acknowledge the racial tensions in that, or how uncomfortable it is to see how people talk about Chantelle's skin & her body, but the way the show also wanted to scold her for having a thick skin about it, when the reality is, if people are gonna talk crazy to you anyway, you might as well find your own beauty in it AND make some money + a name for yourself off of it, you know?
