This Week's Listening & Muses - April 1-7

Schmitt - Suites from Antoine et Cléopâtre. For r/classicalmusic 's piece of the week. I haven't listened to much by Florent Schmitt, I know his symphonie concertante and some piano works. I liked his orchestration, like Debussy mixed with Strauss. Doesn't captivate me as much as the piano and chamber works but it is luscious.

Mendelssohn - Concerto in Ab Major for two pianos. Decided to listen through more of Hyperion's catalogue of "Romantic Piano Concertos", which were some of the works I listened to getting into classical music and were formative to my tastes. Mendelssohn's double piano concertos were written when he was a teenager for him to play with his sister Fanny, and they weren't published in his lifetime and apparently he thought they were immature. The concerto was charming and made me think of the early/classical Beethoven piano concertos

Moszkowski - Piano Concerto in E major. Another recording from the Romantic Concertos series, I hadn't listened to this one much before and wasn't that interested. Listening to it again now, I loved the exuberance and larger-than-life sounds

Schmidt - Symphony no.1. A less popular symphonist I was really into years back, late romantic and decadent. I didn't like this one as much at first, but listening now I'm surprised that I used to find it boring. It's very loud, grand, "majestic", and like a lot of romantic symphonies, long. It's great for blasting on speakers

Messiaen - Turangalîla. To break up the Romantic monotony, I was happy to see Marc-André Hamelin as the pianist for this masterpiece. Bombastic, "futuristic", otherworldly, fun and beautiful and sometimes mind-boggling.

I'll try to post the top favorites of music I listen to in a week to share some recommendations and act as my own listening diary, hopefully introduce some music to you guys or get recommendations in return!

Antoine Et Cleopatre, Luc-Olivier Merson (French, 1846-1920)

An intricately detailed illustration shows two figures, representing Mark Antony and Cleopatra, in a close embrace. Cléopâtre et Antoine

Considérée par les Romains comme un "fatale monstrum", un présage fatal, Cléopâtre est l'une des figures les plus populaires, bien qu'insaisissables, du monde antique. La reine d'Égypte a été immortalisée par de nombreux écrivains et cinéastes, notamment par Shakespeare dans Antoine et Cléopâtre, et par Hollywood dans Cléopâtre (1963) avec Elizabeth Taylor et Richard Burton. Ce dernier film présente l'image mémorable de la jeune et séduisante Cléopâtre émergeant gracieusement d'un tapis déroulé devant le général romain Jules César. Mais Cléopâtre doit-elle être considérée uniquement comme l'amante de Jules César et de Marc-Antoine? Ou bien a-t-elle joué un rôle important non seulement dans l'histoire de l'Égypte, mais aussi dans celle de la puissante République romaine?

Antoine et Cleopatre

Antoine, Lepidus et Octavius Cesar sont les 3 dirigeants de Rome.

Antoine passe son temps en Égypte avec Cleopatre ce qui énerve les 2 autres dirigeants.

Lorsque Fulvia, l’épouse officiel de Antoine, meurt il est obligé de retourner à Rome.

On apprend que Pompée complote contre les 3 dirigeants ce qui oblige Antoine de rester à Rome.

De plus il accepte d’épouser Octavie (soeur de Octavius). Quand Cleopatre apprend cela, elle est dévastée.

Alors que Octavie et Antoine sont à Athènes, Octavius attaque Pompée et gagne. Et décide de faire prisonnier Lepidus.

Peur que cela lui arrive aussi, il envoie Octavie à Rome et part pour l’Égypte retrouver sa chère Cleopatre.

Avec l’aide des Égyptien, Antoine ose attaquer Rome mais il perd la bataille. Cleopatre a tellement honte qu’elle se fait passer pour morte.

Antoine apprenant qu’elle est « morte » se poignarde. Il meurt quelques heures plus tard dans les bras de Cleopatre.

Cleopatre refuse de se livrer aux romains alors elle préfère être piqué par des serpents et meurt. Ses servantes Iras et Charmian décident également de mourir.
