ANTTI PIETIKÄINEN TAKES US TO THE MISTY FORESTS OF LAPLAND VIA DRONE
The Finnish Lapland takes pride in being a winter wonderland for travelers who dream of breath-taking landscapes, blanketed in snow. However, there’s more to see in Finland’s northernmost region, as Antti Pietikäinen shows us in his drone photos of summer in Lapland’s foggy wilderness. In his aptly named Misty Forests of Lapland set, Antti, who is based in the municipality of Muonio, takes us around the old fjells, lakes, swamps, and rivers that come to life during the summer in Lapland. During this time, the dark winter days give way to 24-hour sunlight: a stark contrast that is part of the allure of the region.

NORTHERN LIGHTS OVER LAPLAND This was the The Aurora Zone: Searching for the Northern Lights' image of 2012, taken by Antti Pietikainen of North Frame - Photos from far away. Pietikainen took the image on September 19, 2012 at 22:45, in autumn before the snow nights became really dark. Pietikainen captured the Aurora Borealis from a lake close to Pallas-Ylläs National Park in Finnish Lapland. At first the auroras were faint but sharp, and then a violet colour came out in the evening, usually a sign for a bigger ‘show’.
Pietikainen used a Canon 5D Mk II; lens Samyang 14mm 2.8. The exposure was 30sec, f/2.8, ISO 3200. -TEL Image: Antti Pietikainen and www.theaurorazone.com https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Aurora-Zone-Searching-for-the-Northern-Lights/171504902907229

Your soothing image of the day. If this calls out to you - use this image for today's meditation. Meditation is so important for empaths. It helps reduce stress and anxiety. It benefits your emotional health, memory, attention span... and even helps fight addiction. Sit down (or lay down) and relax your body so you are as comfortable as possible. Close your eyes, focus on your breathing, and let your mind adventure into the soothing image of the day. Celestial Lights from Ole C. Salomonsen on Vimeo.
Celestial Lights is my second video project. It is another stop motion based video about the northern lights. The video is shot in the northern parts of Norway, Finland and Sweden during autumn 2011, winter and spring 2012.
If you like the video, please feel free to share it!

If you have access to proper audio hardware, please connect and turn up the volume to enjoy the fantastic music composed by Norwegian composer Kai-Anders Ryan. Not only is Kai-Anders a great musical talent, he is also very professional and a joy to work with.

For those who do not know, auroras are caused by solar activity. This is shortly visualized in the video. Our suns activity varies in 11 year cycles, and we are closing solar maximum (solar max) for our current solar cycle somewhere between 2012-2013, and solar activity with corresponding auroral activity has clearly been picking up. The beginning of 2011 was lots of clouds but weather improved late 2011 and out 2012. This video contains recordings from some of the most spectacular auroral displays I have ever witnessed, and I have seen a few.
For this video I did shoot approx 150.000 exposures from sept.2011 - april.2012 using Canon DSLR's and various wide angle lenses. Approx 6.000 frames in this video. To achieve pannings I used the fantastic Stage Zero + MX2 controller time-lapse gear from Dynamic Perception.
The video is a merge of two parts; the first part contains some more wild and aggressive auroras, as well as a few milky way sequences, hence either auroras are moving fast because they are, or they are fast due to motion of the milky way / stars. Still, some of the strait up shots are very close to real-time speed, although auroras mostly are slower, she can also be FAST! The second part has some more slow and majestic auroras, where I have focused more on composition and foreground. The music should give you a clear indication of where you are :)
Again, choosing what sequences to use was a battle, and many good sequences will have to wait for a later project I am working on ;) - More info about this will be announced on my facebook site. facebook.com/arcticlightphoto
This video summarizes the end of a hectic aurora season for me, and my last shots was done only a few days ago. However now the late sunlight is making it hard to shoot the auroras at night up here, so I decided enough was enough for now, and time to release the video.
I have driven thousands of km between locations up here in the arctic this season, and while on location(s) I was running between 2-3 cameras like a madman, and almost every sequence you see in this video also has been shot using circular fish-eye optics, for yet another project to come. Luckily I had some good company on many of the cold nights.
Gear used: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS 5D Mark III Canon 15mm f/2.8, Canon 24mm f/1.4 II, Canon 17-40 f/4, Nikon 14-24 f/2.8, Samyang 14mm f/2.8, Samyang 24mm f/1.4
Dynamic Perception Stage Zero + MX2, Orion/Merlin AZ Teletrack head.
Thanks to: Thomas Seppola Antti Pietikainen Thorbjørn Riise Hågensen Helge Mortensen

Hope you like the video, and that you by watching it are able to understand my fascination and awe for this beautiful celestial phenomenon.
Video will also be available in 4K Digital Cinema on request.
Best, Ole

NORTHERN LIGHTS AND THE COSMOS Antti Pietikainen took this image of the Aurora Borealis mixed with the stars near the village of Muonio in Finnish Lapland, on November 19 2012 at 11:30pm. The photographer reported that the activity was quite high that night and the Aurora started early with lots of violet stripes, indicating that ‘something big was coming’. Pietikainen captured the image after th
e activity peaked as the lights were calming down. It was a really dark autumn night before the snows arrived, making the colours all the more vibrant. The colours of the Aurora are determined by the different types of gas which predominate at certain altitudes within the Earth’s atmosphere. Shades of green and, to a lesser extent, yellow are the most common colours because the majority of incomi ng particles collide with oxygen at an altitude of around 100km. Reds, purples, pinks, blues and violets appear less frequently as they are created by the particles colliding with lower lying nitrogen molecules below 100km. Possibly the most spectacular Northern Lights occur when the particles collide with high altitude oxygen (200km) creating a blue or vivid red Aurora. Pietikainen used a Canon 5d Mk II / EF 24mm, f/1.4 L II USM. The exposure was 25 sec, ISO 2500, f/ 1.4. -TEL Image: Antti Pietikainen andwww.theaurorazone.comhttps://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Aurora-Zone-Searching-for-the-Northern-Lights/171504902907229 https://www.facebook.com/pages/North-Frame-Photos-from-far-away/187267964682689?fref=ts

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS OVER LAPLAND Photographer Antti Pietikainen took this image on Boxing Day 2011 next to the Pallas-Ylläs National Park in North West Finnish Lapland. It is a mild Aurora over a kota (a tepee is known as a kota in Finland). The stars were the only light and with -20°C, there was a crystal clear sky. Pietikainen used a Canon 5d Mk II / EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM, with a 15 second exposure, f/1.4 ISO 2500. -TEL Image: Antti Pietikainen and www.theaurorazone.com (With permission) https://www.facebook.com/TheAuroraZone/
