a/n: aight had to whip this out of the drafts since my LAST miles post got a community label. + i wasn’t too proud of it anyways so i just took it down. </3 i’ll probably put it back up once i try to figure out what’s wrong w it though.

miles would most definitely be a gaming and music reaction streamer. he would always be up to date with the newest games but let brent faiyaz drop a new album or something, and he gets RIGHT on it!

you would expect majority of his audience to be girls because of his good looks and nice personality, however he seems to be more appealing to guys since he rages on the games he plays quite a lot. (he is not very fond of mercy players on overwatch and hates winston mains with a passion.)

he has a pretty big fanbase, ranging from around 800k-1M followers on twitch and 500k subscribers on his twitch highlights channel. and the only reason why his following got this huge in only a year’s span is because he went viral on tiktok because of him raging at a game and then his sound became a trend. now most audios on tiktok are from his streams, and honestly he finds it hilarious.

now miles is really private about his life outside of streaming. he’ll answer the basic questions about his age, his race/ethnicity, how many siblings he has and etc. but anything about his relationship status or anything was kept strictly confidential.

that was until one day you walked in his room while streaming. it was a normal stream, he was just talking to chat and answering questions per usual. you had brought him some food since he had since you some money via cash app to do so. you didn’t know he was streaming so you just came and hugged him, even giving him a kiss, and then handed him his food. you didn’t even pay attention to the stream and kept going with your business. he had got so caught up in the moment he hadn’t realized that he was still streaming and his chat was going crazy.

he was shocked to say at the least but he wasn’t mad at you or anything. he was more mad at his chat for trying to spit game at you even though they had saw the whole ordeal. once you were informed that you were dating the miles morales, your social medias, that were once very private, started blowing up with notifications asking you about your relationship with miles.

miles took this opportunity to properly introduce you on his instagram story. about two weeks after the situation happened, he posted a picture with you and him for your 6th month anniversary. the caption saying, “happy 6th month anniversary to my beautiful girlfriend. te amo tanto. <3 @[yourusername]”

and so the news was out. from this point forward, you started to pop up in the streams a little more often and you started to grow this special little friendship with his fanbase. you once just came into his room because you wanted a hug and the entire chat was filled with “AWWW!!! YOU GUYS ARE SO CUTE!!” and “mbn.. 😔💔”s. now not EVERYONE was happy with this situation and some people spread hate comments here and there but because of the overwhelming support of your relationship, miles barely noticed it. the only thing he had on his mind was you and his career.

I am a sucker for puns and I will make them whenever I can, but I have never seen a better pun than the title of the Good Place Season 4 Episode 7 “Help is Other People”. For those who may not understand, this a play on the quote “Hell is other people” from the play No Exit by Sartre. the idea in No Exit was that 3 people were sent to Hell and as punishment, they had to live with each other for eternity. at first they thought they got off easily, but they soon realized that their specific personalities, flaws, and idiosyncrasies played off each other in such away that they would never be able to live together peacefully. because as soon as 2 of them reached an agreement, the other one would ruin it, and so on, and so on.

and that idea, of a group of people playing off each others flaws in order to create the worst situation for everyone involved, was the exact idea behind Michael’s first experiment. he gathered Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason specifically because their specific traits created the worst possible outcome for all of them. but it backfired, because instead of hurting and ruining each other, they consistently helped each other to grow and mature time after time, even on earth, essentially turning “Hell is other people” into “Help is other people”

but that’s not it, because remember, that’s all seasons 1-3 and this title is in season 4. you see, in season 4 they tried to recreate the experiment with new people to see if it work the same (despite being a fundamentally different experiment, but that’s another post). the participants-Simone, Chidi, John, and Brent-were supposed to help each other grow the way the original participants had. and in this episode, the new experiment is coming to a close, and the Soul Squad is desperately trying to rack up a few last points and get these people to help each other. to put aside their problems with each other and just help each other to grow and mature and change. and it almost works. if there had just been a few more seconds, it might have.

anyway to recap the reason I love this so much is because the phrase “Help is other people” is essentially the show’s entire thesis and statement on human interactions, and it is a play on the phrase “Hell is other people” which was the thought behind Michael’s original experiment, and the episode for which it’s the title, is the episode in which the Eleanor, Michael, and the others are most desperate for it to be true.

Animation > Live Action

So I finally finished watching Star Trek: Prodigy last weekend. Don't worry I binged it on Netflix the day it dropped (I just didn't watch it as it streamed). I wanted to savour it because it might be all we get and that is damn sad.

Anyway! As good as Star Trek: Prodigy was (seriously watch it, you won't regret it) this ramble is only tangentially related to it.

Right or wrong nostalgia is riding high in media right now. Some hits, some awful misses. We also need new stuff and shouldn't just recycle existing IPs but that's a whole other post. To keep it zoomed out, I think there is an element of human nature that likes more stories in worlds we already love. I've seen posts explaining why people love fanfic vs. reading new original novels for this reason. They already love the characters, they are invested. There is a warmth and certainty to it. When this is done in media it can go horribly wrong. If something is revisited and done badly there is like a taint... I'm getting off topic.

TLDR - we like more stories set in worlds we already love.

BUT (and it's a big but) live action has a lot of constraints.

People get older when their characters shouldn't e.g. Data is an android and doesn't age but of course Brent Spiner does and no amount of make-up can disguise it.

Hard to portray alien proportions. Like the Grand Inquisitor on Star Wars looked awful on the Obi-Wan show and I don't know how much this was Disney being cheap, but I don't like actors to suffer either. I mean just look at this here. To me there is no contest.

There are limits for safety/physics/reality reasons as to sets or action sequences. Animation obviously has it's own limitations like characters have default 'outfits' quite often, as rigging new clothing takes a long time (also budget plays a factor just as it does for live action). But still I would argue imagination is the primary limit of animation in terms of what can be done. Art is wonderful that way.

I'm sure there are many other points to but this post is long enough as it is.

Anyway it just struck me watching Star Trek: Prodigy that we had Janeway, and Chakotay, and the Doctor and there was zero issue with when in the timeline this was set post-Voyager because actor aging didn't matter. They could record their lines in a soundbooth wearing their comfiest clothes if they wanted. There's a longevity to that which live action can't realistically offer.

I don't know I just think there's a reason that looking at more recent franchise entries for both Star Wars and Trek, the best shows have both been animation (Prodigy and Rebels).

So yeah I would love to see more animation if we're riding the nostalgia train, and having more adventures with long-time faves.

so i have like a million corner gas fic ideas, most having to do with the same storyline, but bc i feel like my fixation on the show is coming to an end and i highly doubt i'll end up writing them anyway, im gonna post summaries of them so they wont go completely untold bc i think some of them are really good

i still cant decide what i wanna title it between Bittersweet Birthday and Happy Birthache, but this is what happens: it's october, which means hank's birthday is coming up! he's sure excited! can't say the same for everyone else though. hank spends weeks planning his own birthday party - buying decorations, party favors, food and drinks as well as cake, and of course inviting folks. some say they'll come, others don't. but when the night of hank's birthday party arrives, nobody shows up. he calls brent, who's busy at the gas station, which is really his only excuse for not going. wanda hears about hank's failed party, and she decides to go and threaten everyone she can into going. although she likes to see hank suffer, she thinks that even he doesn't deserve to be ignored on his birthday. besides, she knows how it feels from experience (remember block party?). so at this point, hank is sitting outside his front door in the dark, when wanda shows up. hank assumes she came to kick him while he's down, but wanda tells him the contrary. soon, tons of people are pulling up to come party, including the rest of the main cast. except for brent. a little while after the party gets started, hank and wanda go back outside to talk. wanda explains why she did what she did, hank expresses surprise and gratitude. they also climb up on hank's roof and do a bit of stargazing while they continue to talk. eventually they go back in to party some more. the next morning, hank comes in the gas station and he's upset with brent for not showing up to his party. brent apologizes and gives hank a present. hank is thankful for the present, but it isnt enough to make him want to forgive brent. then the story concludes with a joke or something idk.

1. "No, not whipped cream," Roope said when they were planning for the show. "Cupcake frosting will hold up so much better and we can take it slow. Cream gets runny."

"Should the frosting be pink?" Sebastian suggested. "It's a Valentine's day special after all."

Roope snorted out a short laughter and shook his head, letting it hang slightly tilted to the side and shooting a mildly amused look at Sebastian.

"No, man," he said like stating the obvious, "Pink will look like you had a nasty skin condition going on, and nobody will believe that I would put my mouth on your dick with it. You could as well suggest chocolate."

3. Sebastian smiles as he greets him, and his eyes linger in Rod’s, the gaze smoldering enough to slow down time the same way Sebastian can do with a puck around the goal.

A languid blink, like the kid's lids were heavy from wet dreams, it's like a slow motion deke that takes out the goalie, leaving the net gaping, offering itself to be taken.

The little pink tongue slips out to wet Sebastian's bottom lip as he nods his greeting, "Hi, Roddy. How're you tonight?"

"Oh, I'm fine if you're fine. You're fine, right?"

"Sure. I'm fine. Prepared and hungry."

"Hungry sounds good."

Sebastian lets a rippling smile flash on his lips. He stops right by Rod’s side and brushes the sleeve of his jacket lightly with his knuckles.

"So hungry," he says, lowering his voice and locking his eyes in his coach's. "Starving." He pauses, further lowering his voice until it's a soft whisper. "Desperate."

10 Books to get to know me

Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.

So I'm going to start with what the hell is this non-ancient business? I am going to take that at face value and not mention The Odyssey because that is an actually ancient book. I know the rules are just trying to say not an old book but I am old so everyone will just have to deal.

Distress - Greg Egan

This is my favourite book. It was written in 1995 and I have to mention that because it was so groundbreaking for its time. This was the first time that I had ever read a story where someone who was Agender was a character. Akili is the main love interest in the story and will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Essentially the book is about a strange mental disease that is spreading throughout the globe. At the same time the physics world is all excited because Violet Mosala is developing a new Theory of Everything. The story follows the life of Andrew Worth who is science journalist covering the theory.

The reason I love this so much is because the main moral of the story is that no one can know what anyone else is thinking. You can stereotype as much as you like but you can never truly know. It's why I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt.

Enders Game Series - Orson Scott Card

Yes. You're going to get a lot of science fiction on this list. Just deal with it.

What's not to love? It's dark. The morals are so grey. What would you do to save humanity? What is a bit of casual Xenocide between friends. The characters are brilliant and nuanced (Bean is my favourit). The story makes you question how horrible of a person you are. Brilliant.

There's way to much plot to summarise but here is the brief. Aliens attacked earth. The government created super intelligent children and trained them for war to beat the aliens. These are their stories.

The Lightbringer Series - Brent Weeks

There's a couple of reasons why this is one of my favourites but I will start with the plot. It really is just one of those child presents with phenomenal powers, learns to use them and eventually ends up saving the day. Here's where it's different.

The world building. This magic system is one of the most interesting and creative ones I have come across. It's based off colour and light and is just so well thought out that it makes me... Hang on I have a gif for this.

Secondly the freaking Gavin twist! If you've read the series you know what I'm talking about. I won't do any spoilers but just know there is a twist and it changes everything.

Silverthorn & A Darkness at Sethanon - Raymond E Feist

What can I say about this one. You may be surprised that it's not Magician and that I didn't say the whole series but these two go together and are so mean so much more to me than the rest. Why? It's Prince Arutha's story. Prince Arutha is such a second child and I just vibe with that. His brother is handsome and charismatic and everyone loves him but Arutha is smart and canny and not as well liked but he is also fair and kind and honestly I could just go on about him forever. The story is gripping and heartbreaking and brilliant.

Wool, Shift & Dust - Hugh Howey

This is post apocalyptic conspiracy gold. The human race consists only of what is left living inside giant bunkers in the ground that they call silos. The atmosphere outside is so toxic that no one can go outside. The series starts with an execution. You see they don't have the resources to have long term prisoners so if anyone does something that deserves long term incarceration they are executed. How are they executed? I'm so glad you asked. They are sent outside. They are sent outside with some cleaning supplies and are asked to clean the windows of the silo because they are always filthy as no one can go outside to clean them.

Anyway the political plotline is good, the conspiracy is better and the main character is a tough as nails BAMF called Juliette.

Beauty - Sheri S Tepper

Trigger warning: Rape/Non-Con

No one mixes fantasy and science fiction quite like Tepper and she does it best in this book. It is like a love letter to the fairytale genre. One of the best parts is picking out which tale each character represents. It has time travel, fairies, love, trauma and everything in between. It follows the story of Beauty as she tries to escape a curse to be with her one true love and instead gets lost in time, space and between worlds.

Dark Rise - C.S. Pacat

The first magical realism of the list. I didn't know this when I started reading it but the whole crux of this story is that Pacat was trying to write the worst set up for a relationship that she could imagine and oh boy did she. You will not see it coming but it is so so good.

Anyway the plot is this. Will is your typical chosen one working to stop the rise of an evil Dark Lord with the help of a few people including Violet his crush. It has references to the crusades and the lost magic of the old world and a unique secret order. Here's the thing. Nothing is what you think and the twists in this book are freaking amazing.

If you've read it hit up my DMs because I cannot talk about it enough and I am dying to read book two (coming out Dec 2023).

I've also read her Captive Prince series which I also enjoyed and was almost included in this list.

The Hunger Games Series - Suzanne Collins

We all know this one. If you don't what rock have you been hiding under. I do love tragedy.

That said I know not as many people have read "A Ballard of Songbirds and Snakes" but please do. Everyone keeps asking me how can I get past Coriolis Snow being the main character? If you haven't guessed by now I love villian origin stories and this is a bloody good one.

Does it excuse who he is and what he does? No but that's part of why it's good. How can we not get behind a spectacular fall from grace. Just read it.

The Wayfarer Series - Becky Chambers

I can't believe I almost forgot this one! Becky Chambers is here writing freaking cutting edge romance. The first book ends in one of the most heartbreaking tragedies I have ever read. Her universe and world building is so creative and different that nothing quite matches it.

Essentially in this universe humans have no home planet. Earth was destroyed hundreds of years ago so we are the immigrants and the minority in the galaxy as we have no home of our own.

Each book is stand alone but I would recommend reading them all as they are that good. Each explores a different set of characters and stories with some overlap so you do get the occasional callbacks to previous books. These are full of characters trying to get by while compromising and appreciating their differences.

Truckers, Diggers and Wings - Terry Pratchett

I had to mention something by Terry Pratchett and I choose this one because it was the first. Soul Music was a close second but this one has such a special place in my heart. It is the story of the nome Masklin who grew up in a hole. A literal hole. It follows his story as he learns that the world is much bigger than he grew up to believe.

I don't know if you know this but I grew up in a small country town halfway up the coast of Western Australia. This book speaks to me because it resonates so much with my personal story because I did grow up and find out the world was much bigger than I had ever realised.

Ok I'm done. That took forever. I may have lost count.
