Weasley Family Dynamics as a quidditch team
I reread Orchards by @whinlatter and it's really got me thinking about Weasley kid family dynamics. So here's a not well-articulated long meta :)
Tumblr media
The analogy? Metaphor? A comparison I can make that sums up the dynamics well is the kids as a quidditch team.
First, you have your Keeper, that's Ron, who does exactly what it sounds like. I think Ron can function as a literal and emotional maintenance of his family. We see him be a buffer between his siblings during conflicts, comfort his mom when she's distraught, and experience genuine depression when he's not around them.
During Harry and Ron's fight in Deathly Hallows, Ron's boiling point is Harry's "impassiveness" for the other Weasley's safety.
"Didn't you hear what they said about my sister? But you didn't give a rat's fart, do you, it's only the Forbidden Forest,... Yea, I get it you don't care! And what about the rest of my family, 'the Weasleys don't need another kid injured ,' did you hear that?"(Deathly Hallows 347).
Being apart from his family, that keeper role, only exacerbated his insecurity about being a failure. Ron is the sibling that takes after his mother the most. He looks after his siblings and their well-beings no matter how unintentional. This includes Harry and Hermione as well. As we see him grow up, we see him accept this role more because he loses the need for external validation.
Tumblr media
Next are our Chasers, Bill, Charlie, and Ginny, which you could argue are the main characters of the game. They do the most gameplay and have the important role of scoring the points. Bill, Charlie, Ginny are they only kids to leave the country for work. In the family, we see them develop similarly personality-wise. They all have lives and experiences outside their family, but that doesn't takeaway from their duty to their families.
"You all right ," said Bill, grinning at Harry and shaking his hand. "Charlie wanted to come, but he couldn't get time off. He said you were incredible against the Horntail." (Goblet of Fire 608).
They are the epitome of the Weasley brand. The cool kids of the family. They're funny, popular, and confident. The favorites.
This dynamic between the siblings changes depending. Bill and Charlie get to be role models to their other siblings because their the oldest. Ginny has the role of being the family mascot. After all the Weasley's have left Hogwarts, her presence is vital to the school. In the family, They are a living representation and reminder of the values that the family was brought up with. This informs their relationship with her brothers(i.e. Ron always wanting to protect Ginny).
Tumblr media
The next positions are the Beaters, Fred and George. Beaters are some of the lesser essential players, but they make the game interesting. Without them quidditch would not be as dangerous nor as fun. Remember how I said Ginny was the Weasley mascot? Well Fred and George are too in a more literal way. They bring the fun to the family, the jokes, the bants. They are also the center of most family conflicts.
"She's furious at them anyway. They didn't get as many O.W.L.s as she expected," (Goblet of Fire 59)
They fail to meet their parents(Molly's fairly reasonable) expectations repeatedly and often go head to head with their parents(Molly) about it. This affects the dynamics of the family because conflict builds bonds. All the siblings love each other, but they do fight. When Fred and George cause conflicts, it stirs throughout the whole house. It forces the siblings closer together or farther apart.
Prefacing this by saying, I don't blame Fred and George for every conflicts that happens or think they do anything any other brother wouldn't. Their role here is important in deepening the relationships of the siblings.
Although I am Team Fred's death was unnecessary and lazy, I do like to think about how his death made the siblings a millions times closer as adults. The twins create challenge that make "the game" better.
Tumblr media
Last but certainly not least, our Seeker, Percy Weasley. Like Percy, The seeker is often alone, spectating for most of the game. Percy is a lone wolf in his family. He's without a pair and at first glance doesn't necessarily fit into the group. He's stern, meticulous, and uptight. To many outlookers, it's a wonder he made it into Gryffindor. He is very much a Gryffindor, just not on the same scale or intensity of his siblings.
Percy has a different perspective of the same Gryffindor/ Weasley values. He, as a Seeker, isn't in the game but sees things other's would miss.
"He said he's been having to struggle against Dad's reputation ever since joined the Ministry and that Dad's got no ambition and that's why we've always been --you know-- not had a lot of money, I mean--" (Order of the Phoenix 93).
Percy does value family, the reputation of his family. We can't expect Percy to not want to succeed and want more for them. He's the 3rd oldest and saw his mother raise his family(basically by herself)on his father's low-income salary. He saw his siblings get bullied, his mother be shamed, and even his siblings get physically hurt. In his eyes, it's selfish for his father and his brothers not to want more.
Percy's role is to be an outsider and look in places the others wouldn't. He finds success and happiness in ways the other's wouldn't have known. Would the twins have pushed for WWW, if not to prove Percy wrong? Like the twins, he pushes his siblings to think more and do more.
He may be wrong sometimes but he means well. He'll also pull through in the end.
Tumblr media
All in all, the Weasley children are a well-oiled team. They love each other and need one other. There's a reason Harry chose this family to latch on to. I'll continue obsessing over them in my head.

What... what? So... blah blah, new crummier telly, blah blah whatever. Why did getting a smaller telly change the aspect ratio on my screenshots and video, tho'? Is that a normal thing that i just never noticed because i had no basis of comparison?
Ok, maybe this isn't wacky, maybe this is normal, but, like, when i recorded before (luckily i still have some footage from episodes previous to everything going to tits in the bad way to compare or i'd probably be even more fucked up wondering if my memory was fucking wiv me) there'd always be a black frame around the entire image. So i'd need to zoom in during editing. 104% for the title bumper (because a little black frame looks nice there), and 109% for the actual game footage (and takeaway bit if it was a LittleBite-sizedPlanet episode), 'cause i didn't want any thing but the level itself on the screen then. This actually caused me to lose just a little bit of the edges, because the perfect size to get rid of the border wivout losing anything is probably somewhere between 108% and 109% zoom, but ShareFactory doesn't let you get that granular.
Anyway, i did some recording today, was setting up my titlecards. Imported the screenshot to LBP for it, and it just had these wee black stripes at top and bottom, not the chonky frame i was used to. i went out to my capture gallery to compare old shots/videos and these new ones, and, yeah, sure enough, all the new ones just have the bits on top and bottom. It's not, like, a major change that'll fuck up my work or anything, but after having a habit of production for seven years, it honestly fucking threw me for a whole minute.
Of greater frustration (tho' at least i know what the issue is here), the speakers on this thing are absolute shite. i had enough problems listening to my voice before, but after so long, i'd kind of come to terms wiv how i sound, and if i couldn't bring myself to quite like it, on good days it was tolerable. Now it's like listening to myself through a tin can, and... whoo doggies, it's not fun. At least i can toss on some headphones to deal wiv that.

Tell me something funky about anatomy, I love anatomy too ✨
~Wren
💖💖💖!!!!!!!
So as it happens, anatomy is a really broad subject and I could pick something out of a hat but im genuinely considering making a lil anatomy ask game for myself hehe
So also as it happens, I went to the Surgeon's Hall Pathology museum in Edinburgh yesterday! I will share some cool anatomy-adjacent things from there, just for starters:
People have been collecting human specimens and remains for literally hundreds of years, presumably more. The oldest specimens in their collection dates back to the like 1500s
For a long time, this used to be just rich people collecting curiosities, and doctors using their own private collections to teach. In the 1600s, the Royal Society of Surgeons and Barbers (yes) started collecting and unifying these private collections from Scotland into the start of the museum i saw yesterday
There is a massive amount of specimens! I did not have enough time to look at all of them and read all the notes
My main takeaway though:
Don't get tuberculosis. That shit fucks you up in all sorts of ways
It destroys your lungs. It erodes your bones. It destroys your kidneys. It destroys your brain
Thank fuck for antibiotics
Oh and also don't be in a war. The amount of gunshot wounds pales in comparison with how many people on the front (WW1 especially) got shit like gangrene and typhus
Well anyway that got a bit morbid and we're into pathology now rather than anatomy, but that's fine. I think it would be great if we could just keep everyone from contacting tuberculosis or being in wars, wouldn't that be nice.
Anyway. If you wanna know more anatomy, well, pick a body part and I will infodump!
suggestions:
Liver
Kidneys
Heart
Brain
Stomach
Other parts of the digestive tract (esophagus, duodenum, small intestine, large intestine, just to give a tiny amount of segmentation)
Other organs of the digestive tract such as pancreas, spleen or gallbladder
Vertebral column and/or spinal cord
Nerves (cranial and/or somatic)
Joints. Pick any joint (knees, shoulders and other upper/lower limb joint are fun but I can also infodump about the joints between vertebrae, the joints between spine and head, and the joints in between different bones of the skull)
Oh on that note bones. I'll infodump on the topic generally but you can also pick a specific bone or set of bones
Im sure im forgetting things here there are so many body things
Maybe muscles and/or ligaments which are not the same thing at all but somewhat related
Connective tissue in general tbh (it starts with a disambiguation because first of all what ISN'T connective tissue)
Ask me about any of these, or anything else you would like to know that I've not mentioned!!
There will be pictures; diagrams, even.

The concept of “Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie” is so bizarre to me, mainly because it feels like not a lot of thought went into it. The trailer literally introduces Shikimori as a girl who is really cute...but SOMETIMES...she can be cool!
Immediately, my first thought was, “Why is it a big deal that she can be cool? Last time I checked, cuteness and coolness aren’t mutually exclusive.” Also, the premise is so basic that it feels like the show doesn’t have a major draw to pull viewers in. They’re basically saying, “female protagonist is cute and cool”, that’s about it. I don’t know what she likes or what her personality is, aside from the fact that she’s dedicated to protecting her boyfriend.
In comparison to “My Dress-Up Darling” which was another romcom anime that came out this year, at least Marin Kitagawa is written like a fully-defined person (she loves to cosplay, she watches anime, she plays video games, she’s into NSFW stuff, she’s not afraid to show off her body, she likes shopping, she’s a social butterfly, she’s open-minded to people’s hobbies, she doesn’t like it when people take advantage of other people, she’s empathetic, she’s clumsy, she can’t cook but tries her hardest, she gets jealous, etc.). And, to be honest, that makes Marin the more interesting character.
Anyways, the main takeaway here is...Kaguya-Sama season 3 is still probably the best romcom anime of this season.

While it's such a great point that Knuckles would think that Sonic is manipulating Tails when it's really Robotnik manipulating him, I also believe there's gonna be a point where Knuckles observes Sonic and Tails's genuine friendship and gets a little jealous. Those two are always lighthearted around each other even while on a mission, and Knuckles can't really say that about himself and his own "companion", at least not in the way their adversaries are. Not only would that help intertwine all three protagonists' arcs, but it would also make Knuckles finally joining Sonic and Tails all the more impactful!
ANONS STOP HIDING BEHIND THAT GREY PFP WITH SHADES BECAUSE HOLY FUCK YOU GUYS ARE READING MY MIND OVER HERE.
A point I’ve always stuck by when it comes to this movie is my belief in it being EXTREMELY clear in one specific way: Over the course of the adventure, the stronger the friendship between Sonic and Tails gets, the more we simultaneously witness the downfall of Knuckles and Robotnik’s partnership.
The thing I’m looking forward to most in this movie is how the medium allows the retelling of certain story beats in S3&K to be a LOT more powerful and impactful in comparison to its original execution on the Genesis, which had (while appealing and still great to this day) limited visuals and sound, no dialogue, and cutscenes that were not only short to not takeaway from gameplay, but were also running in-game too, meaning Sonic and Tails don’t actually get to show any reaction to Knuckles getting betrayed and joining their side when it happens. Obviously this doesn’t make S3&K a BAD game with BAD storytelling, because it clearly still holds up well enough as an iconic piece of video game history and Sonic media to get a high-budget movie based off of its elements 28 YEARS LATER (and for its limitations it’s still SUPER good anyway!!! also sonic is. yknow. the Fast Video Game. they were going STRAIGHT TO THE POINT and Simple). And I get a strong feeling that the gradual transition between Knuckles as a threatening bad guy with Robotnik to everyone including himself realizing he wasn’t fighting for what he thought he was will be put into a Lot more consideration here >:))
Speaking of a more impactful way of becoming Sonic’s ally...that’s another huge thing I felt was especially limited by the original medium of that point in his story. In S3&K, he picks himself up from getting electrocuted by Eggman, stands there thinking for a few seconds, and then is completely down to help Sonic and Tails and be their friend. For the simplicity of the game, it works and still feels important! But...when you look at the context in a more realistic sense...yeah, for a movie you’d need a LOT more substance to it than just “HEY I know you beat the shit out of me two seconds ago and I’ve been against you since the moment we’ve met, but we’re friends now! Lets go!” ......so what could you add there? If there’s an element that is most likely going to be kept, it’s Sonic and Knuckles being occupied fighting eachother whilst Robotnik gets ahold of the Master Emerald.
Also, quick note that idk if i’ve shared in a previous post yet, but in the point of the movie where this *would* happen, around when Sonic and Robotnik are at the Labyrinth zone-esque place (which. I highly believe leads to where the Emerald is kept based on the VERY similar structures and ruins/water-motif, which also applies to where Sonic ends up when he’s standing alone outside of the altar!!), Tails will not be present, or at least not right beside Sonic. Don’t know why, but the footage we have makes that pretty clear I believe. Anyways, carrying on!
What would need the MOST alterations is the circumstances that would push Sonic and Knuckles into trusting eachother and becoming allies, especially on Knuckles’ end. It’s almost like....oh I dunno.....they’d need to be in a circumstance where they have to work together against something for the first time, before they get into the groove of it during the Green Hills battle......
My bets are either on 1. Them BOTH working together to stop Robotnik from taking away the Emerald, which would parallel what happens in-game. Makes enough sense, might be a little short, but they could make that work with some good context and action!
But 2. is....ermm....an indulgent theory that is probably based off of information I should really fact-check. What happens to Angel Island when the Master Emerald is taken away from it or shattered? It falls down. That’s the Emerald’s impact on the place that protects it. So. The labyrinth, that whole structure underground. If that’s what we are limited to, that can still work. So what do you think would happen to that place if the Emerald is taken or broken?
It’s one thing for Robotnik to just ditch Sonic and Knuckles there and leave...but it’d be another to make sure they don’t get out of there alive. When in a situation like that, you’d expect these two ENEMIES to just fend for themselves and be the cause of their own downfall.....but helping eachother make it out for their own survival is something they could reflect on after and realize what that says about eachother......that they aren’t bad.
BUT I’ll just leave that there for now teehee!! If you um. Want to hear more. Let me know. Since this already got INSANELY long and I probably didn’t get every coherent detail of my thoughts in here very well due to the excitement LMFAO 😭 BUT!! I APPRECIATE THIS QUESTION AND U ARE SO SO RIGHT ANON THANKS

i watched red vs blue: zero with my dear friends today and i was asked to “post” my “thoughts” on the subject. Please do not click this readmore unless, for some reason, you want to read three thousand words on the subject of red vs blue: zero critical analysis. i highly doubt that’s the reason anyone is following me, but hey.
anyway. here you have it.
Here are my opinions on RVB0 as someone who has quite literally no nostalgia for any older RVB content. I’ve seen seasons 1-13 once and bits and pieces of it more than once here and there, but I only saw it for the first time within the past couple of months. I’ve literally never seen any other RT/AH content. I can name a few people who worked on OG Red vs. Blue but other than Mounty Oum I have NO idea who is responsible for what, really, or what anything else they’ve ever worked on is, or whether or not they’re awful people. I know even less about the people making RVB0 - All I know is that the main writer is named Torrian but I honestly don’t even know if that’s a first name, a last name, or a moniker. All this to say; nothing about my criticism is rooted in any perceived slight against the franchise or branding by the new staff members, because I don’t know or care about any of it. In fact, I’m going to try and avoid any direct comparison between RVB0 and earlier seasons of RVB as a means of critique until the very end, where I’ll look at that relationship specifically.
So here is my opinion of RVB0 as it stands right now:
1. The Writing
Everything about RVB0 feels as if it was written by a first-time writer who hasn’t learned to kill his darlings. The narrative is both simultaneously far too full, leaving very little breathing room for character interaction, and oddly sparse, with a story that lacks any meaningful takeaway, interesting ideas, or genuine emotional connection. It also feels like it’s for a very much younger audience - I don’t mean this as a negative at all. I love tv for kids. I watch more TV for kids than I do for adults, mostly, but I think it’s important to address this because a lot of the time ‘this is for kids’ is used to act like you’re not allowed to critique a narrative thoroughly. It definitely changes the way you critique it, but the critique can still be in good faith.  I watched the entirety of RVB0 only after it was finished, in one sitting, and I was giving it my full attention, essentially like it was a movie. I’m going to assume it was much better to watch in chunks, because as it stood, there was literally no time built into the narrative to process the events that had just transpired, or try and predict what events might be coming in the future. When there’s no time to think about the narrative as you’re watching it, the narrative ends up as being something that happens to the audience, not something they engage with. It’s like the difference between taking notes during a lecture or just sitting and listening. If you’re making no attempt to actively process what’s happening, it doesn’t stick in your mind well. I found myself struggling to recall the events and explanations that had immediately transpired because as soon as one thing had happened, another thing was already happening, and it was like a mental juggling act to try and figure out which information was important enough to dwell on in the time we were given to dwell on it.
Which brings me to another point - pacing. Every event in the show, whether a character moment, a plot moment, or a fight scene, felt like it was supposed to land with almost the exact same amount of emotional weight. It all felt like The Most Important Thing that had Yet Happened. And I understand that this is done as an attempt to squeeze as much as possible out of a rather short runtime, but it fundamentally fails. When everything is the most important thing happening, it all fades into static. That’s what most of 0’s narrative was to me: static. It’s only been a few hours since I watched it but I had to go step by step and type out all of the story beats I could remember and run it by my friends who are much more enthusiastic RVB fans than I am to make sure I hadn’t missed or forgotten anything. I hadn’t, apparently, but the fact that my takeaway from the show was pretty accurate and also disappointingly lackluster says a lot. Strangely enough, the most interesting thing the show alluded to - a holo echo, or whatever the term they used was - was one of the things least extrapolated upon in the show’s incredibly bulky exposition. Benefit of the doubt says that’s something they’ll explore in future seasons (are they getting more? Is that planned? I just realized I don’t actually know.)
And bulky it was! I have quite honestly never seen such flagrant disregard for the rule of “show, don’t tell.” There was not a single ounce of subtlety or implication involved in the storytelling of RVB0. Something was either told to you explicitly, or almost entirely absent from the narrative. Essentially zilch in between. We are told the dynamic the characters have with each other, and their personality pros and cons are listed for us conveniently by Carolina. The plot develops in exposition dumps. This is partially due to the series’ short runtime, but is also very much a result of how that runtime was then used by the writers. They sacrificed a massive chunk of their show for the sake of cramming in a ton of fight scenes, and if they wanted to keep all of those fight scenes, it would have been necessary to pare down their story and characters proportionally in comparison, but they didn’t do that either. They wanted to have it both ways and there simply wasn’t enough time for it.
The story itself is… uninteresting. It plays out more like the flimsy premise of a video game quest rather than a piece of media to be meaningfully engaged with. RVB0 is I think something I would be pitched by a guy who thinks the MCU and BNHA are the best storytelling to come out of the past decade. It is nothing but tropes. And I hate having to use this as an insult! I love tropes. The worst thing about RVB0 is that nothing it does is wholly unforgivable in its own right. Hunter x Hunter, a phenomenal shonen, is notoriously filled with pages upon pages of detailed exposition and explanations of things, and I absolutely love it. Leverage, my favorite TV show of all time, is literally nothing but a five man band who has to learn to work as a team while seemingly systematically hitting a checklist of every relevant trope in the book. Pacific Rim is an incredibly straightforward good guys vs giant monsters blockbuster to show off some cool fight scenes such as a big robot cutting an alien in half with a giant sword, and it’s some of the most fun I ever have watching a movie. Something being derivative, clunky, poorly executed in some specific areas, narratively weak, or any single one of these flaws, is perfectly fine assuming it’s done with the intention and care that’s necessary to make the good parts shine more. I’ll forgive literally any crime a piece of media commits as long as it’s interesting and/or enjoyable to consume. RVB0 is not that. I’m not sure what the main point of RVB0 was supposed to be, because it seemingly succeeds at nothing. It has absolutely nothing new or innovative to justify its lack of concern for traditional storytelling conventions. Based solely on the amount of screentime things were given, I’d be inclined to say the narrative existed mostly to give flimsy pretense for the fight scenes, but that’s an entire other can of worms.
2. The Visuals + Fights
I have no qualms with things that are all style and no substance. Sometimes you just want to see pretty colors moving on the screen for a while or watch some cool bad guys and monsters or whatever get punched. RVB0 was not this either. The show fundamentally lacked a coherent aesthetic vision. Much of the show had a rather generic sci-fi feel to it with the biggest standouts to this being the very noir looking cityscape, which my friends and I all immediately joked looked like something from a batman game, or the temple, which my friends and I all immediately joked looked like a world of warcraft raid. They were obviously attempting to get variety in their environment design, which I appreciate, but they did this without having a coherent enough visual language to feel like it was all part of the same world. In general, there was also just a lack of visual clarity or strong shots. The value range in any given scene was poor, the compositions and framing were functional at best, and the character animation was unpleasantly exaggerated. It just doesn’t really look that good beyond fancy rendering techniques.
The fight scenes are their entire own beast. Since ‘FIGHT SCENE’ is the largest single category of scenes in the show, they definitely feel worth looking at with a genuine critical eye. Or, at least, I’d like to, but honestly half the time I found myself almost unable to look at them. The camera is rarely still long enough to really enjoy what you’re watching - tracking the motion of the character AND the camera at such constant breakneck high speeds left little time to appreciate any nuances that might have been present in the choreography or character animation. I tried, believe me, I really did, but the fight scenes leave one with the same sort of dizzy convoluted spectacle as a Michael Bay transformers movie. They also really lacked the impact fight scenes are supposed to have.
It’s hard to have a good, memorable fight scene without it doing one of three things: 1. Showing off innovative or creative fighting styles and choreography 2. Making use of the fight’s setting or environment in an engaging and visually interesting way or 3. Further exploring a character’s personality or actions by the way they fight. It’s also hard to do one of these things on its own without at least touching a bit on the other two. For the most part, I find RVB0’s fight scenes fail to do this. Other than rather surface level insubstantial factors, there was little to visually distinguish any of RVB0’s fight scenes from each other. Not only did I find a lot of them difficult to watch and unappealing, I found them all difficult to watch and unappealing in an almost identical way. They felt incredibly interchangeable and very generic. If you could take a fight scene and change the location it was set and also change which characters were participating and have very little change, it’s probably not a good fight scene.
I think “generic” is really just the defining word of RVB0 and I think that’s also why it falls short in the humor department  as well.
3. The Comedy
Funny shit is hard to write and humor is also incredibly subjective but I definitely got almost no laughs out of RVB0. I think a total of three. By far the best joke was Carolina having a cast on top of her armor, which, I must stress, is an incredibly funny gag and I love it. But overall I think the humor fell short because it felt like it was tacked on more than a natural and intentional part of this world and these characters. A lot of the jokes felt like they were just thrown in wherever they’d fit, without any build up to punchlines and with little regard for what sort of joke each character would make. Like, there was some, obviously Raymond’s sense of humor had the most character to it, but the character-oriented humor still felt very weak. When focusing on character-driven humor, there’s a LOT you can establish about characters based on what sort of jokes they choose to make, who they’re picking as the punchlines of these jokes, and who their in-universe audience for the jokes is. In RVB0, the jokes all felt very immersion-breaking and self aware, directed wholly towards the audience rather than occurring as a natural result of interplay between the characters. This is partially due to how lackluster the character writing was overall, and the previously stated tight timing, but also definitely due to a lack of a real understanding about what makes a joke land.
A rule of thumb I personally hold for comedy is that, when push comes to shove, more specific is always going to be more funny. The example I gave when trying to explain this was this:
saying two characters had awkward sex in a movie theater: funny
saying two characters had an awkward handjob in a cinemark: even funnier
saying two characters spent 54 minutes of 11:14's 1:26 runtime trying out some uncomfortably-angled hand stuff in the back of a dilapidated cinemark that lost funding halfway through retrofitting into a dinner theater: the funniest
The more specific a joke is, the more it relies on an in-depth understanding of the characters and world you’re dealing with and the more ‘realistic’ it feels within the context of your media. Especially with this kind of humor. When you’re joking with your friends, you don’t go for stock-humor that could be pulled out of a joke book, you go for the specific. You aim for the weak spots. If a set of jokes could be blindly transplanted into another world, onto another cast of characters, then it’s far too generic to be truly funny or memorable. I don’t think there’s a single joke in RVB0 where the humor of it hinged upon the characters or the setting.
Then there’s the issue of situational comedy and physical comedy. This is really where the humor being ‘tacked on’ shows the most. Once again, part of what makes actually solid comedy land properly is it feeling like a natural result of the world you have established. Real life is absurd and comical situations can be found even in the midst of some pretty grim context, and that’s why black comedy is successful, and why comedy shows are allowed to dip into heavier subject matter from time to time, or why dramas often search for levity in humor. It’s a natural part of being human to find humor in almost any situation. The key thing, though, once again, is finding it in the situation. Many of RVB0’s attempts at humor, once again, feel like they would be the exact same jokes when stripped from their context, and that’s almost never good. A pretty fundamental concept in both storytelling in general but particularly comedy writing is ‘setup and payoff’. No joke in RVB0 is a reward for a seemingly innocuous event in an earlier scene or for an overlooked piece of environmental design. The jokes pop in when there’s time for them in between all the exposition and fighting, and are gone as soon as they’re done. There’s no long term, underlying comedic throughline to give any sense of coherence or intent to the sense of humor the show is trying to establish. Every joke is an isolated one-off quip or one-liner, and it fails to engage the audience in a meaningful way.
All together, each individual component of RVB0 feels like it was conjured up independently, without any concern to how it interacted with the larger product they were creating. And I think this is really where it all falls apart. RVB0 feels criminally generic in a way reminiscent of mass-market media which at least has the luxury of attributing these flaws, this complete and total watering down of anything unique, to heavy oversight and large teams with competing visions. But I don’t think that’s the case for RVB0. I don’t know much about what the pipeline is like for this show, but I feel like the fundamental problem it suffers from is a lack of heart.
In comparison to Red vs. Blue
Let's face it. This is a terrible successor to Red vs. Blue. I wouldn’t care if NONE of the old characters were in it - that’s not my problem. I haven’t seen past season 13 because from what I heard the show already jumped the shark a bit and then some. That’s not what makes it a poor follow up. What makes it a bad successor is that it fundamentally lacks any of the aspects of the OG RVB that made it unique or appealing at all. I find myself wondering what Torrian is trying to say with RVB0 and quite literally the only answer I find myself falling back onto is that he isn’t trying to say anything at all. Regardless of what you feel about the original RVB, it undeniably had things to say. The opening “why are we here” speech does an excellent job at establishing that this is a show intended to poke fun at the misery of bureaucracy and subservience to nonsensical systems, not just in the context of military life, but in a very broad-strokes way almost any middle-class worker can relate to. At the end of the day, fiction is at its best when it resonates with some aspect of its audience’s life. I know instantly which parts of the original Red vs Blue I’m supposed to relate to. I can’t say anything even close to that about 0.
RVB is an absurdist parody that heavily satirizes aspects of the military and life as a low-on-the-food-chain worker in general that almost it’s entire target audience will be familiar with. The most significant draw of the show to me was how the dialogue felt like listening to my friends bicker with each other in our group chats. It required no effort for me to connect with and although the narrative never outright looked to the camera and explained ‘we are critiquing the military’s stupid red tape and self-fullfilling eternal conflict’ they didn’t need to, because the writing trusted itself and its audience enough to believe this could be conveyed. It is, in a way, the complete antithesis to the badass superhero macho military man protagonist that we all know so well. RVB was saying something, and it was saying it in a rather novel format.
Nothing about RVB0 is novel. Nothing about RVB0 says anything. Nothing about it compels me to relate to any of these characters or their situations. RVB0 doesn’t feel like absurdism, or satire. RVB0 feels like it is, completely uncritically, the exact media that RVB itself was riffing off of. Both RVB0 and RVB when you watch them give you the feeling that what you’re seeing here is kids on a playground larping with toy soldiers. It’s all ridiculous and over the top cliche stupid garbage where each side is trying to one-up the other. The critical difference is, in RVB, we’re supposed to look at this and laugh at how ridiculous this is. In RVB0 we’re supposed to unironically think this is all pretty badass.
The PFL arc of the original RVB existed to show us that setting up an elite team of supersoldiers with special powers was something done in bad faith, with poor outcomes, that left everyone involved either cruel, damaged, or dead. It was a bad thing. And what we’re seeing in RVB0 is the same premise, except, this time it’s good. We’re supposed to root for this format. RVB0 feels much more like a demo reel, cutscenes from a video game that doesn’t exist, or a shonen anime fanboy’s journal scribbling than it feels like a piece of media with any objective value in any area.  In every area that RVB was anti-establishment, RVB0 is pure undiluted establishment through and through.

I Complain About Chinese Translations: Hollow Knight Edition (>:3)
against my better judgement, im gonna start this now because im too tired to focus on studying
obligatory spoiler warning for anyone whos going to stumble across this in the tag, but maybe not so much for dialogue because im going to assume that 90% of the people who will look at this do not understand chinese anyway! id love to be wrong, but my hopes are not high
prefacing it with the fact that i am a native cantonese speaker who is also fluent in mandarin (though i cant speak it anymore, sob), so my critique and commentary will be coming from the angle of both languages, as well as my understanding of english. the game’s chinese translation appears to be done with mandarin in mind, which i will also complain about, but its not a huge issue
im using my last save slot for this, it better be good

nothing in the wiki or the original game seems to imply that you have to have the king’s brand to enter the white palace, and now im tempted to do a run just for the sole purpose of mucking with that

[image description: a comparison of the heights of markoth, the seer, and lurien. the seer is just about half of markoth’s height. the top of lurien’s mask is about level with the tips of markoth’s helmet. end id]
apparently hes fucking massive, he just looks tiny next to herrah and monomon.
im not sure what the main takeaway here should be but uhhhhhh. butterfly man Tol

A Jikook Guide to Run! BTS: 1-20
Tumblr media
Hi all! Welcome to part one of my overview of all jikook moments in Run! BTS and Run BEHIND.
My biggest takeaway from these early episodes is that BH didn't quite know how to make a good variety show yet. Some of the set-ups are awkward and the guys are clearly still getting used to being on camera in this format. The jikook moments aren’t as frequent or obvious. As we go on, expect less “they look at each other in a maybe meaningful way” and more “then he sat down in his lap...” That said, this set of episodes includes both the priest skit and the cops skit, so if you’re into role-play, this was your era of Run!
Episode Guide under the cut, to avoid both spoilers and taking up half your dash...
UPDATED PER THE SUGGESTIONS OF SOME LOVELY COMMENTERS. THANK YOU ALL! New content in bold.
FYI: When you don’t see “BEHIND” descriptions or photos, it means there were no notable jikook moments. I’ve given each ep a general rating and a special Jikook-ery rating, both out of 5. YMMV!
Ep 1  (n/a)
The one that’s just a commercial for the V app
Ep 2 “The Greatest Man” (Ep: 3 / KM: 1)
The one with the most homoerotic series of challenges I’ve ever seen to prove who’s the “best” man
6:28 - Jimin TWICE randomly announces during musical chairs that JK will win
Not ikook-specific, but FYI, Jungkook REALLY likes being tickled. If you want a vague idea of what the beginnings of an OT7 orgy might look like, the scene at 2:09 is for you! And if you’re curious what each member looks like putting on lipstick and holding their mouths open, check out 4:24.
Ep 3  “Theme Park” (Ep: 1 / KM: 1)
The one at Six Flags that’s not worth watching unless you enjoy shaky camera footage of people screaming on roller coasters
5:44 - When Jimin is proud of himself for having ridden a coaster, JK goes to say something to him but keeps glancing at the camera self-consciously.
6:19 - With the camera further away, JK and JM talk with each other while waiting on line
7:06 - JK fast-walks to get to JM and then leans on JM’s shoulder to check the post-ride pictures
Ep 4  “30 Second Gate” (Ep: 1 / KM: 0.5)
The one where they do fairly boring challenges in a pool
5:26 - There’s a super brief instant of JK looking over at Jimin while shyly tugging on his shirt collar. Prob not even worth being noted as a moment, but JK looks so adorable that I’m including it anyway
Ep 5  “100 Seconds Sports Day” (Ep: 1 / KM: 1)
The one with a rather repetitive relay game
5:56 - JM playfully throws a milk carton at JK when JK fails to complete his task
7:53 - JK does some “teleporting” where he goes from being behind Suga in one shot to next to JM in the following one. He stays next to JM the whole rest of the time theyre mixing the drink.
Ep 6 “Sketch: Confession” (Ep: 2 / KM: 4)
The priest sketch that launched a thousand AUs...
3:30 - Jungkook comes in to “confess his sins” to Jimin, who is playing a priest and calls him “darling.” JK confesses to using Jin’s razor while also claiming to be the eldest in BTS. Jimin tells him that he’s so handsome, it must be that he’s blessed by God and can be forgiven for most things. Jimin tells JK to give him a hug to get forgiveness for his sins. As they hug, both are smiling and the onscreen text tells us how happy Jimin is and puts a little heart next to his face during the hug. Jimin strokes JK’s cheek after and it seems to make JK a little shy. Jimin calls out “bye, darling” as he leaves, then calls him “cutie” for the camera.  For comparison’s sake, Jimin hits V on the forehead and makes J-Hope do 50 push-ups to earn forgiveness. He hugs J-Hope at the end of it and the difference between how that hug feels versus the one with JK is clear as day.
Ep 6pt2 “Sketch: Confession” (Ep: 2 / KM: 0 )
None (neither appear in this episode)
Ep 7 “Paintball” (Ep: 1 / KM: 1)
The one that reminds you paintball is more fun to play than to watch
I’ll be honest, guys, between the masked helmets they’re wearing and the constant cutting around, I cannot follow the paintball games in this episode at all. I’m going to go out on a limb and say nothing particularly shippy happens during them.
9:54 - JK picks up Jimin from behind and bounces him around for a while (we don’t know how long because the camera cuts before he’s done). It will be revealed in ep. 10 that this is part of JK’s secret mission, which is to get Jimin to say “please stop.” However, despite Jimin not looking thrilled at all the bouncing around, he doesn’t tell JK to stop.
Ep 8 “Treasure Hunt” (Ep: 2 / KM: 2)
The one where they run or ride ATVs to find flags in the woods
1:15 - Jimin says out of nowhere that he thinks JK is going to be running and tells him to be careful not to bump into anyone (I think - the subs are a little weird on this one).
13:09 - JK tries to take one of JM’s meal ticket flags. JM refuses and claims JK called him “trash.” JK (kind of?) denies this and throws his one flag on the ground in frustration. J-Hope grabs it and JK sulks a bit because he’s left with nothing.
13:33 - Jimin reverses course and gives JK one of his flags. JK is delighted. RM asks why (apparently he, Jimin, and V had a deal to share their flags?) and Jimin just responds that Jungkook is very cute (which the on-screen texts puts a heart next to).  Jimin ends up giving a flag to V, too, but he makes him beg like a dog first.
14:16 - Jimin calls JK over and gives him a brief hug / pat on the back
Ep 9 “Bungee Jump” (Ep: 1 / KM: 0.5)
The one where it is what it says on the tin
11:25 - Some jikookers have reported hearing JK say an un-captioned “pretty” here (sounds like yebbeo or yeebeun in Korean). I’ll be totally honest that I can’t really make it out, but I will put this note here in case others with better ears than mine want to check it out!
13:59 - JM has his arm around JK at the start of the shot here
Ep 10 “Spy for Silmido Island” (Ep: 2 / KM: 2)
The one where everyone eats a meal as they learn how JK has been doing secret missions the last three episodes
6:16 - JK explains that he failed his mission to get Jimin to say, “please stop.” We see flashbacks of JK trying - in addition to the above picking JM up, JK also pulled on his hair and gave him a shoulder rub (there is no explanation for why he thought that would be something JM would tell him to stop), and spraying him with a water bottle.  The main jikook takeaway from this and the confession episode seems to be that JM will let JK get away with anything because he think he’s cute.
7:00 - We see that JM inadvertently made JK fail his mission to feed the camera man because, when JK held out food, JM got JK to feed him instead
Ep 11 "Back to School" (Ep: 3 / KM: 1)
The one where Suga dresses as a girl and gets hit on by the rest of the band
21:28 - Despite Jimin doing nothing but smiling in the sketch, JK says he's the day's MVP and is weirdly sincere about it
24:05 - YMMV on jeon-lous, but he does indeed do the tongue thing here when JM is flirting with girl-Yoongi
Ep 12 "Cops" (Ep: 4 / KM: 4)
The police sketch that launched ten thousand AUs...
6:46 - "Detective" Jungkook pulls "criminal" Jimin away by his collar 8:41 - After Jimin acts cute and says he's bored, JK comes over and slaps his upper thigh before throwing Jimin over his shoulder and slapping his butt. When JK puts him down, Jimin just looks at him with a dazed smile for a moment before they continue on with the sketch.
9:30 - Jimin tries to flirt his way out of of JK’s interrogation, which JK says is for “setting fire to ARMY’s hearts with his smiling eyes.”
10:25 - After a brief interuption by “Captain” Suga, the interrogation starts having flirty vibes again, with JK smirking and making eye contact while Jimin acts bashful and speaks in a whispery voice.
11:00 - JK holds a fake gun on JM as he starts his “Lie” dance, during which he directs finger hearts towards JK. The camera focuses on JM and, by the time it shows JK again, he’s lowered the gun and put his other hand over his heart. The on-screen text says “Detective Jeon’s heart is attacked.”
12:55 - JM and JK switch roles so JM is the detective. He hits JK over the head with a book. JK has basically no visible reaction, but JM has clearly flustered himself.
Note: To explain my reasoning for these originally not being here - if you look at the other skits in this ep, they are all accusing each other of doing things to ARMY’s hearts and being weirdly flirty with each other. Like, this police station has some serious sexual harassment issues all around! That said, the vibes are unique with jikook and, upon rewatch, I came to agree with y’all that the above should’ve been included. 19:30 - Alternate version of the sketch where Jimin and JK have a dance battle that ends in both of them being put in the jail cell and told to dance.
BEHIND  0:58 - Jimin flirt-ily calls out "I'm bored; play with me, Detective" (presumably to JK since they're scene partners).  Note: Adults saying they "played" with each other is a common way to describe hanging out in Korean and doesn't necessarily have the sexual connotations it does in English.
4:08 - Jimin stares at JK as he does squats
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ep 13 "The Spy Who Returned Part 1" (Ep: 4 / KM: 2)
The ones where they play games at an indoor water park
1:00 - Jimin does an exaggerated running motion and JK slaps him to make him stop, which JM finds funny
1:43 - JM has his arm around JK
6:00 - JK jokingly(?) tells JM his wet hair looks cool
11:12 - JM calls JK their team's ace and they whisper about who he should call out from the other team
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ep 14 "The Spy Who Returned Part 2" (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
16:04 - JM jokingly hits JK for getting the answer super wrong and then they go down the waterslide together. (Note: I've seen some jikook-ers claim JK messed up on purpose so the game wouldn't end and he'd get to ride with Jimin, but I'm not sure there's actual evidence to support that theory.)
The moment that led to the picture below isn’t in the ep or the BEHIND, but I raised the episode’s KM score a full point for it
Tumblr media
Ep 15 "The Spy Who Returned Part 3" (Ep: 3 / KM: 2)
TW for this ep: 5:14 - during the confessions game, Jin tells Jimin that whenever Jimin asks if he put on weight, Jin wants to say he looks like a pig. Jimin claims to not be upset after, but looks like he's going to cry and seems off for a while. Then, at 10:45, Jin reiterates that Jimin "got fat." Everyone laughs except JK, who widens his eyes and then starts chewing on his finger.
6:37 - Despite being on the same team as JK, Jimin joins J-Hope's complaints about JK coming to their room uninvited, saying that JK often brushes his teeth in their room. He accuses JK of buying the exact same toothbrush as Jimin’s and complains that they can’t tell them a part. JK says it wasn't him and then there's a weird cut to sometime later when Jimin is sitting back down again...  Just prior to this, Jimin is looking unhappy as Hobi tells a story about JK seeing him naked, but it’s hard to tell if he’s reacting to that or feeling upset about Jin’s weight comments from the previous round.
16:02 - Jimin defends Jungkook against accusations that he's the spy
BEHIND 4:30 - Jimin sits on Jungkook's lap and, when he leans over to try to get Jin to give him food, JK puts his hand on JM's hip to steady him
Ep 16 "Snowpark Winter Olympics" (Ep: 4 / KM: 1)
The one where everyone plays winter games
4:35 - When JM and JK are the finalists for the sledding round, JM thanks the viewers for their support. JK asks "what does that make me?" and yells/sings badly, which makes JM laugh. I don’t quite get it, tbh, but they seem to be enjoying themselves
14:50 - JK helps JM get his sled in place
BEHIND 3:02 - JK smiles as he gets pushed towards JM on the ice
Ep 17 "Arcade Olympics Part 1" (Ep: 2 / JK: 2)
The ones where we are reminded that playing arcade games is more fun than watching people play them
All of this and next episode, whenever they all reshuffle positions, Jimin and Jungkook end up standing next to each other. This happens pretty frequently in Run BTS generally, but it was particularly noticeable in this ep since it's not like they're on the same team or anything...
4:16 - When Jimin does a dramatic DDR finish, JK calls attention to it. JM turns to him and they lock eyes for a second
15:00 - JK cheers Jimin's name when it looks like he's going to win the basketball game
BEHIND
3:36 - JK & JM play a 4D game together Also, JK has an interesting mark on his neck on his right side that does not appear to be there in the episode itself...
Tumblr media
Ep 18 "Arcade Olympics Part 2" (Ep: 2 / JK: 1)
3:30 - JK tries (unsuccessfully) to coach Jimin on the driving game
3:45 - JK stands up for Jimin and says he's getting the hang of the game
14:36 - JM & JK laugh together at RM's failure
19:58 - It's not super clear, but it sounds like JK calls JM "Jiminie" at the end of his sentence
Tumblr media
Ep 19 "Strike" (Ep: 2 / JK: 1)
The one where BTS go bowling together and end up bowing down to JK
4:47 - JK shares that he and Jimin used to bowl together
---
If there’s anything I’ve missed or that anyone has different interpretations of, I’d love to hear it.
More episodes coming soon!

Cyberpunk 2077: Thoughts Partway Through
If you dig all the way back into my tumblr history, to the first few posts I wrote, you’ll find some musings on the genre of cyberpunk and how we’re really living it (and the future is boring, which is a trope). I’ve read and watched and mulled over the different ways to look at it for over a decade - probably longer. Suffice it to say, when I heard that CD Projekt Red was making a Cyberpunk game - a huge open-world mess of an RPG at that - I was excited.
Self-admittedly I have not played nor do I know a lot about Mike Pondsmith’s Cyberpunk TTRPG. I’ve read some lore and the source books, and there’s this definite feeling that it’s something I would have found really edgy and cool at 12yrs old.
I’m a big chunk of hours into the game. Here’s my two biggest  (non-spoiler) takeaways:
1) Cyberpunk 2077 is simultaneously far too serious and nowhere near serious enough. There’s this tongue-in-cheek exaggeration of American problems, silly gangs, slightly carnival-esque violence everywhere so let’s have fun, goofy slang and this slight air of camp that’s hard to escape. But it’s all played po-faced, straight and committed, there’s no wink or crack of a smile. Pushed farther this game would easily be cyber-GTA (a comparison it should get anyway) - a farcical almost Idiocracy style send-up. I think this would be fine route to take considering the source material has a gang that genetically alters themselves to look like circus clowns.
Simultaneously, it could go even darker - no silly anything, death and blood and everything horrible in your face and unrelenting. No heroes to meet, no fun in gun fights - only pain and survival. AKA leaning more into the Deus Ex frame, though without all the whack-job illuminati conspiracy theories. Considering how ‘high technology, low life’ cyberpunk is at its genre roots, this sort of where I’d like it to go, all blood and guts and life-is-nasty.
In either case, the tiptoeing between silly and serious, while kind of refusing to acknowledge the silliness, sort of doesn’t work for me. It’s got a very odd Evil Dead vibe where you’re wondering if it’s supposed to be funny but nobody is laughing.
2) CD Projekt Red is a studio that was given a bit of a gift with the lightning in a bottle of the Witcher. Comparing against their past work, Cyberpunk 2077 is simply not as good a game as The Witcher 3 is. They are markedly similar games in a few respects - particularly how they drop you in medias res into the world and don’t hold your hand, and the loosely explained character optimization.
But the fact is that the things TW3 excelled most at - deep characters, gentle but deep world-building, a brutal and frequently fatalistic theme in a trope reversal from normal fantasy, incredible quest design, and meaningful consequences to your choices... well, only two of those made it Cyberpunk for sure, and another is yet to be determined. The quest design has been outstanding so far, and the world is brilliantly brought to busy and chaotic life. Whether my choices matter... will be determined later.
Something about TW3 and it’s characters felt organic, lived in. And Cyberpunk hasn’t managed to do that.  Some of it is that it is very much the opposite of a trope inversion - cyberpunk is built on stereotypes. Some of it is that the characters don’t have history or pre-existing relationships with V, and that they feel... simpler, more one-note. Some of it is that V is far more of a blank slate than Geralt, more of an unknown to Night City. The life-is-cheap-and-nasty vibe I adored about TW3 doesn’t feel as serious here (see above). It’s a living world, absolutely, but it just doesn’t feel as... lived in, I guess. What this screams to me is that the source material MATTERS, and that the Witcher is just better source material.
There’s also less variety to the gameplay, sort of. There are many more practical ways to build a character than in TW3, but they also demand far more specialization. Some of the most interesting things in TW3 were the monsters and the different ways you could choose to deal with them or had to approach them. In Cyberpunk, to be effective, you have to pick your build early, and since a lot side quests basically amount to “go to the place and neutralize the dudes who are hostile to you,” you end up approaching most missions the same way. TW3 at least forced you to mix things up. It could also be that I’m spending a LOT of time doing radiant world-quests, which would also explain my out-of-balance high street cred rating.
Cyberpunk 2077 is and will be an important game. A huge, sprawling, delightful mess of an RPG with so much to do it astounds, a gorgeous look into excess and dark futurism.
I’ll have more to say once I finish things, I’m sure of it.

Quarantine UST 5
//Seriously, writing for such a sustained stretch is...unprecedented...I think I haven’t done this since the beginning of my intro into this fandom. Maybe this period of time is good for something after all.
And yes, I definitely binged my way through FF7R as soon as it came out...
The days seemed to pass in a blur; yet as Sio woke up after another night of binging Netflix with Jess, it felt like nothing had changed, either. She’d adjusted to the rhythm of her new life fairly well: sleep in until 10am or so, leisurely troop downstairs for breakfast after brushing her teeth—usually Adam was already up and frying some eggs, or sometimes they picked up coffee and pastries from a local cafe—clean up, then she might go for a walk outside or spent some time in the yard while catching up on emails and texts from her family and Asao-san. By then, Jess and Mahesh were usually awake, and they’d all gather again for lunch (or in the other twos’ case, brunch), and afterwards Sio usually would do her training, either by herself or under Adam’s watchful guidance. Then it was free time (which usually involved another stroll outside), dinner, sometimes a group activity, and then everybody retired to their rooms for the night.
Recently, the group started venturing out a bit more; at first it was just to the local cafe for drinks and snacks, but yesterday the group’d gone for another grocery run, this time at the farmer’s market. Even with all the restrictions in place, Sio was glad to be able to spend some time outdoors again, and picking from the wide variety of fresh produce was much more fun than going to the grocery store.
Yawing, the sniper continued lounging in her bed, absentmindedly scrolling through her texts from last night. Her parents were doing okay (actually most of Japan seemed alright by comparison) though obviously they were concerned about her health and safety. Asao-san’s latest couple of messages contained the usual news and gossip, although the last one before she signed off left the sniper blushing and covering her face.
[Asao Kaoru]: By the way, how are things with Jack-san? You two seem to be getting awfully close... (ΦωΦ)~ Did you get any more peeks in during training?
“Moou, Asao-saaaan!! I-It’s not like, that!” The sniper screeched, tugging her hair. “Jeeze, why does everybody keep assuming we’re gonna...hook up or something like that...”
Admittedly, her own brain wasn’t helping matters; at this point, she’d given up on denying her attraction towards him—besides her nightly little ritual, she’d already had at least one...steamy dream involving him and no clothing. “Ugh...why do I have to make things so complicated...”
‘I just want to get to know him better, not get a crush on him! Besides, knowing him, he probably has a girlfriend waiting for him back in London. Or at least, had one...unlike me...’ A cool, good-looking guy like him who was the epitome of the tall, dark and handsome type? Sio looked down at her own flat chest, unfashionable haircut and childish face, and sighed. ‘Yeah right; I’d never stand a chance. He’s probably got way more experience and prefers girls who look like Newton...’
The thought depressed her more than she expected; even though she knew her chances were slim, and that shacking up with your platoon leader probably wasn’t the best idea, the thought of not getting any closer than just friendly teammates made her heart sink straight to the ground. ‘I know I’m just a below-average high schooler, and I don’t even have anything going for me except my e-gene; but even I can still hope, right...?’
She moped about all through her morning routine, not really bothering to fix her hair or wear anything aside from putting on a pair of shorts (why bother, it wasn’t like she was cute or anything). Walking into the quiet kitchen, she pulled out a box of cereal and some milk, sullenly eating her cold breakfast.
“Good morning, Sio dear. Oh goodness, is something the matter? You’re looking awfully peaked...you don’t feel ill, do you?” Jess came down the stairs, Sio a bit surprised as it was unusual for the blonde to be up before noon. “Hmm, you don’t seem feverish...”
“Oh, good morning, Jess-san.” She heaved another sigh, not really interested in finishing the rest of her soggy bowl. “It’s, nothing...I’m not sick, I guess I just feel...”
“The quarantine blues?” The sniper nodded, and the blonde patted her shoulder sympathetically. “There there, it’s perfectly normal. Things are unprecedented, you can’t expect to keep your spirits up all the time in a situation like this.”
“Yeah, well...I guess I’m surprised I’d let it get to me. I mean, all things considered, it’s not like we’re suffering or anything. There’s a lot of people who have it way worse than us...”
‘Yeah, and here I am moping about because I have the hots for my platoon leader even though I don’t stand a chance...’
Jess nodded in sympathy. “Definitely, I can see that. But you know, that doesn’t mean you can’t feel bad, either. I can’t say the past week has been much of a vacation, despite what Mahesh likes to claim. Feeling down about everything that’s been going on is understandable, and it isn’t healthy to pretend otherwise.”
“True...thanks, Jess-san...um, I guess it does feel a little better to talk about it.” Sio stirred her cereal a bit, surprised that she was finally having a true conversation with the blonde that didn’t involve a fear of tongues and kisses (mostly).
“Of course, dear. I apologize for my earlier behaviors...but I am still serious when I say I do want to be there for you, should you ever want another ear,” the blonde smiled kindly at the younger girl. “By the way, where is Adam? Don’t tell me he’s still asleep?”
“Eh? Adam-san...uh, I dunno. He’s usually here by the time I wake up, so...” Sio shrugged. “It’s not like I checked his room, but maybe he went out for something?”
As if on cue the front door unlocked, both girls turning around as Adam walked in, bag in one hand and a tray of drinks in the other. Sio rushed out to the foyer to help him unload and disinfect the door, keys, etc.
“Speak of the devil; we were just wondering about you,” Jess commented as Adam finally took his seat at the table. “New place this time?”
“Yeh; was checking out local places online yesterday and thought this might be a nice change of pace.” He passed out the drinks; only Mahesh’s chai latte remained untouched as the trio started unwrapping pastries and other baked goods. “Ogura, you’re alright with tea, correct? They didn’t seem to have anything like sencha, but I got jasmine, if that’s okay.”
“Oh, yes please; and thank you, Adam-san. You could’ve waited for us to get up,” Sio offered as she took a sip of her beverage. “I kinda feel bad for making you go all by yourself...”
“Eh, it’s fine. Even I like taking a break from cookin’ once in a while.” Their leader shrugged as he drank his coffee (pure black, no sugar or cream). “Besides, it’s nice to get some fresh air when it’s early in the morning. Also less folks t’ dodge...swear to god, every time we go out it’s like playing a game of Frogger...”
Sio sweatdropped, but it was true; as much as she cherished her daily walks, there was a reason why she preferred running on the treadmill. Trying to avoid other passerby who were also exercising or walking their dogs and also not getting run over by traffic... It was a good thing the yard was decently sized, and the days were slowly starting to warm up. The sniper glanced out the windows, where the golden rays were starting to bathe the garden with their yellow hues.
“Actually, I’m gonna eat out in the garden. The weather’s been so pleasant lately, might be nice for a change.” She took her tea and croissant with her; to her surprise, Adam followed. “Oh? Did you...also want to eat outside?”
“Why not; like you said, today seems to be shaping up to be pretty nice...would be a shame to spend it all indoors, again,” he gave her just a the slightest hints of a smile, and Sio felt her stomach fluttering with butterflies. Maybe she wasn’t insane for thinking it would be possible? Maybe?
“U-Um, s, so, how was the rest of the city?” She was stuttering again, much to her dismay; didn’t she get over this already?
Adam didn’t seem to notice, or at least, he didn’t comment on it. “Hm, mostly the same; not that many folks about, but all the better for me. At least we can still get takeaway and drinks.” He finished the rest of his cup. “I was surprised Jess’ up so early; usually she and Mirza sleep ‘til past noon...”
“Heh, me too.” Sio grinned as she finished her croissant. “Mm, this croissant is super flakey...so good...” If it weren’t for their training and exercise, she was sure she’d have gained at least 5 pounds by now. Even in the midst of a pandemic, San Francisco’s culinary scene did not disappoint; and that wasn’t even counting their cooking nights.
“To be honest, I’m more surprised you’ve been able to stick to a decent wake-up time every morning,” Adam teased, “considering someone always had to wake you for a morning meeting back at the Logan...”
The sniper nearly spit her tea back out. “H-Hey! Well, you’re always banging on my door every other morning anyway for some thing or other...so I figured, I might as well just save us both the trouble and get up anyway,” she pouted, cheeks tinged with pink. “Besides, those meetings were way early; if there’s one thing that’s better about this, is that I can at least sleep in a little...”
Adam smirked behind his sandwich, glad the sniper couldn’t see his face. For if she could, he was sure she’d be able to notice the warm flush spreading across his features, including his ears (mercifully hidden by his hair). She was adorable, really; the innocence of a girl, yet she was surprisingly insightful and able to see a clear line from point A to B, without being bogged down by details. ‘Not to mention that wit, when she actually works up the courage to talk back,’ he noted, recalling many of their previous conversations where she’d sparred with him using nothing but words.
Cunning, intuitive, determined and sincere; it was amazing how quickly his opinion of her changed, not just since she joined but even from the beginning of this quarantine. Hardly any of her quirks seemed detrimental now; silly at most, and charming at best. Was this what poets meant by love causing you to see everything through a rose-tinted lens? Even her appearance, which most people would probably consider average at best, gave him a flurry of feelings whenever he thought about them: large, round maroons, that cute bob with uneven bangs that could probably use a trim soon, and her slender, lithe figure... Adam swallowed and tried to turn his mind away from more lustful thoughts, but it was useless. It was obvious she was probably the most flat-chested female holder next to Geronimo, but it didn’t detract his attentions at all; if anything, he felt it suited her quite well. Once he’d caught a glimpse of those salacious photos Capa had distributed, and they gave him a bit of a shock—her willowy frame saddled with two huge water balloons that seemed to defy gravity, nevermind the fake, prancing-around poses the clones took.
All-in-all, good things definitely come in small packages, he decided. In fact, the smaller the better. Sio wasn’t that short, but her slight frame made it seem so, especially compared to him. He’d never paid attention, but Adam was sure the sniper would probably be just the right size for spooning, cuddled between his arms and those petite breasts could fit just right in his palms—
‘Hoo boy, stop right there Adam; you should not be thinking of your fellow holder in such a manner...’ But even his inner consciousness sounded half-hearted, as if it were just repeating things because that’s what was expected. And maybe it was right; even now, he still quarreled with himself on whether or not he should even pursue anything beyond friendly camaraderie with the girl. Her ambiguous feelings towards him aside, what if they got in trouble? What if it ended up interfering with their duties as e-gene holders? Or worse yet, what if it didn’t work out and the subsequent fallout ended up destroying their entire platoon?
“Adam-san?” He jerked up at her voice, having been lost in his own turmoil for the past couple of minutes. “Are you okay? You seem kind of...glum.”
You’re not wrong there, he almost said, but only shook his head. “Nah; just thinking about...stuff.”
The sniper nodded. “Yeah, I get that...I’ve been, kinda thinking on a lot of stuff too...”
Now it was Adam’s turn to be surprised. “Oh? Somethin’ else botherin’ you lately?”
“Ah uh, I mean nothing really...specific,” Sio squirmed, caught off-guard by his question. There was no way she could admit her burgeoning feelings for him. “I just...guess the whole pandemic situation is kind of getting to me, even though all things considered, this isn’t that terrible. But somehow things just feel...off.”
“Yeh, I get that too, sometimes. But I mean, this isn’t exactly a normal situation; people are sick and dying, we’re stuck in this house and still have to do our best to try and maintain a ‘normal’ life—and that’s not even counting the Objects mounting another attack at any minute.” Adam cut into the remainder of his muffin with a knife. “It’s normal to feel distressed about it—hell, I think I’d be more concerned if you weren’t...”
The sniper nodded, though she didn’t seem keen on finishing the rest of her pastries now, instead fiddling around with her fork. Adam felt a bit guilty; he hadn’t meant to ruin her nice garden breakfast with something gloomy like the virus. Especially not after they’d managed to have a normal, decent conversation.
“Hey uh, squirt? Y’know, if you need some time to yourself, you can skip your training for today,” he offered, the sniper blinking in surprise.
“Oh...I-I mean, it’s fine, you don’t have to make an exception for me; it’s not like I physically feel bad or anything...”
“Don’t worry about it; I wouldn’t want you around that equipment when you’re all distracted like this, anyway. Last thing we need is an accident,” Adam muttered. To be sure, she’d definitely improved quite a bit, but sometimes he still did worry about her.
“...Are you saying you don’t trust me to handle myself?”
“...I’m just taking precautions.”
“Hnnn...” Sio didn’t say anything more, instead sullenly sipping the rest of her tea.
Adam sighed inwardly. Why were girls so fickle to deal with at times? “...By the way, not sure if you’re interested, but one of our other care packages finally arrived, and they got our request for a game console plus some of the latest games, so...”
He didn’t finish, but Adam could tell by the way her eyes gleamed the second he mentioned the word Playstation. ‘Ah, so she’s also a gamer...’ Somehow he wasn’t surprised; it seemed natural that a military otaku would also be into video games, though he was curious if she played genres other than shooters or military sims.
“...What sort of games did they send?”
“Oh, I haven’t gone through them myself yet, but I’d assume a pretty wide variety...why, was there anything in particular you’re looking forward to?” Adam replied nonchalantly, testing out the waters. Maybe this would be a good opportunity to spend some time with her in a casual setting...
“Nothing really, but I mean, if there’s something good...” Her eyes shifted a bit over the edge of her drink, meeting his for a second before they darted back down at her plate. “I’ve been hearing a lot about Apex Legends...the guys from the Fifth Platoon are always talking about it.”
“Hm; I’m not that interested in battle royale types; I was actually thinking more along the lines of action RPG or adventure...”
They surreptitiously looked at each other for a few more seconds, before Adam suddenly got up.
“...You wanna go take a look, squirt?”
“...Okay.”
The two fast-walked back into the house, rushing by Jess who looked at the two in surprise and a yawning Mahesh, whom Adam barely had time to point to his drink—“don’t blame me if it’s cold, it’s not my fault you slept in”—and straight into the living room, where the 70-inch flatscreen sat in pristine condition, having only been used as a Netflix machine thus far. The package was still unopened, Sio carefully wiping it down first as Adam sliced the box open with ease.
“Oooh, what’s this? Looks like a headset...wait, oh my god is this one of those VR things everyone’s been talking about?” Sio’s eyes glittered with excitement as she dug around. “Wow, I wanna try it out later!”
“Let’s see, here’s the PS4,” Adam carefully set the machine up, along with its cables, “and as for games...well, looks like they did include Apex Legends, so if you want to give it a shot squirt, go ahead. Other than that...Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, whatever the latest iteration of Call of Duty is, Devil May Cry 5—that might be fun—Monster Hunter: World, and...well well,” Adam let a low whistle, “what do we have here?”
Sio looked over his shoulder, eyebrow raised as she read the title. “Final Fantasy 7...wait, isn’t this game super old?”
“Look closer, squirt; it’s the remake. I don’t know how those bastards managed to pull it off with everything that’s going on, but I know what I’ll be playing tonight.” Adam tried not to sound too eager, but it was hard; Final Fantasy VII, while already dated by the time he was old enough to enjoy video games, was still considered a classic, and he’d secretly been hoping for a chance to play it as soon as it was announced.
Sio looked on in wonder as Adam diligently set the rest of the system up. He seemed much younger for a change, almost like a puppy instead of a wolf. His boyish enthusiasm was charming, and Sio felt like she was seeing a part of his true self, for once. It made her feel warm all over, but not in a horny way; rather, it was the joy of seeing him genuinely happy for once, instead of shouldering the burden of being their leader. ‘So I was right about him being a gamer...I knew that Metal Gear Rising t-shirt was more than just a coincidence.’
“Well, I guess I know what we’re playing then...” Now that everything was finally ready, she took a seat on the couch next to Adam; both sets of eyes now glued to the giant screen as the opening sequence panned over the in-game city of Midgar, the classic theme blasting from the speakers.
Though Sio didn’t know much about the Final Fantasy series (famous as it was, she preferred her games with more bullet-hell sequences and tanks), within a few minutes she could see why it was so revered, and why Adam was so excited. Movie-quality graphics aside, the action was tightly-paced and almost non-stop, Sio getting more engrossed herself as Adam deftly controlled the action on-screen. Before either of them knew it, it was past lunchtime; the only indication any time passed at all was Sio’s stomach complaining rather loudly after Adam finally got Cloud & co. past chapter 3.
“Whoa, I didn’t know it was so...cool,” Sio sat down to their late lunch (Chinese takeout), still in a bit of a daze at her mind replayed the action sequences and storyline. “No wonder it’s so popular...”
“Oh yeh; holy hell, they did a banger of a job remaking it,” Adam dug into the boxes with relish, barely paying attention to what was going into his mouth. “Shit, the graphics, characterization, soundtrack—and the overhauled ATB system is amazing—”
“I like the characters a lot! They look so realistic...well, as realistic as anime characters can get,” Sio mused, remembering the intro with one very well-rendered Cloud Strife. “So, I’m guessing you like a lot of JRPGs then...?”
Adam nodded. “I do, but I’ll play pretty much anything, honestly. I think the only genres I don’t do are racing and puzzles.” He shook his head, emptying the rest of his plate. “You? I prefer it when the action’s hot, bonus points if it’s got a great story.”
“Uh, I don’t play that many RPGs in general, but sometimes I do if it’s really good. But uh, yeah, I...prefer shooters like Ikaruga, or Biohazard—er, I think they call it Resident Evil outside of Japan? Oh, but there was that one series that came out a while ago, and I was surprised because I also liked the plot a lot...it’s called Bioshock?”
“Somehow, I’m not surprised to hear that; a military otaku like you, would be shocked if you didn’t have some type of shoot-’em-up as your top three,” Adam smirked, Sio laughing sheepishly. “Anyway, if you wanna start your own file while I’m working out, go ahead; like I said, you should take a break today, get some time in for yourself.”
“Ah—oh, uh, okay...thanks,” Sio trailed off as Adam left, presumably to change and then train. “Well...guess I’ll try playing by myself.”
The console booted up, and soon the sniper settled into a comfy pile of cushions, learning the battle system based on what Adam was doing earlier. While years of shooters—first person and otherwise—had honed her reflexes fairly well, Sio had to admit this system of ATB, materia, and character swapping was a bit of unknown territory. Luckily the game was generous with tutorials, but she still struggled a bit against her first real boss, after the beginning section was over. She groaned as the ‘game over’ screen flashed, kneading her temples.
“Man, I thought I had it! What happened...did I not use the right skills?”
“You might wanna check your materia slots, squirt. Those’ll matter a lot in the coming battles.”
A low, husky tone breathed right next to her ear, and Sio nearly jumped out of her skin. “Aaagggh! A-Adam-san, don’t do that! You scared the crap out of me...” She protested, hugging a pillow to her chest as Adam chuckled.
“Sorry squirt, but I was curious to see how you’d do. Didn’t wanna interrupt the fight, though seems like you’re gonna need to retool your party’s materia and gear first.” When he left, Adam was curious if the girl would continue playing Final Fantasy, or pop in another game. But it seemed Cloud Strife’s fabulous chocobo-locks had worked their magic, and he returned from training to find the sniper valiantly trying to defeat the motorcycle-crazy Rosche.
“Hrrm...I don’t really know what some of these descriptions mean. Magic I get, but things like MP up? Chakra?”
“Budge up a bit there, squirt, and I’ll give you some tips.” The sniper scooted to make room for the silver-haired man, as he plopped himself onto the couch and took the controller. “First off, always get HP up; more health never hurts. And then of course, healing...”
Sio nodded, but in reality she was only half paying attention. Adam was sitting right next to her, along with those chiseled muscles still glistening with sweat as his shirt clung to those washboard abs...swallowing thickly, she forced herself to listen to his advice, but even his scent was distracting; there was sweat, but it wasn’t offensive, mixed with a rather musky odor that she couldn’t quite place...
“—and this should be a pretty good setup,” Adam finished. “Uh, squirt? Ogura?” He snapped his fingers in front of her face. “Oy, snap out of it; what’s gotten into you?
“A-Ah—huh? Hai? I-I’m, fine...” Adam raised an eyebrow, but Sio snatched the controller back before anything else happened. “Th, Thanks for the advice...I think I’ll be able to get him this time...”
Adam blinked. “...Alright. Well, good luck then.”
‘Was she checking me out?’ Though he tried not to rouse suspicion as he left, he’d definitely noticed Sio staring at more than just the screen while he’d been redoing her party members. ‘And I’m pretty sure she wasn’t randomly looking around the house.’ Oh no. The sniper definitely had a long way to go if she wanted to be more discreet about her little voyeuristic habits.
The thought of their innocent little sniper actually being not-so-innocent made him hot all over again, and Adam groaned, because he knew this was the kind of heat that couldn’t be solved with simply a cold shower.
“Bloody hell...” ----- “Well, it sure seems like you two have found your quarantine activity,” Mahesh commented at dinner that night, both the sniper and the Ripper arriving long after the food arrived. “Sorry, we just went ahead and ordered some stuff we thought you’d enjoy.” He pushed their respective bentos towards the other two. “But it’s Japanese tonight, Sio, so hopefully it’s up to your standards.”
“Mmm...oh man, it’s so nice to eat Japanese food again...” Sighing with delight, Sio eagerly dug into her chicken karaage, potato salad and white rice. “A-Ah, that’s not to say the food we’ve been getting is bad or anything, it’s been really fun to try a lot of different cuisines and taste everybody’s home cooking too...”
“This is really good; I guess they weren’t kidding about San Francisco being a melting pot,” Adam nodded in approval. “Good thing DOGOO’s footin’ the bill...I wouldn’t fancy being the one having to pay for all this.”
“Just like they’re paying for all your gaming purchases?” Jess smiled knowingly at the other two, who proceeded to turn oddly pink. “What are you two playing anyway that’s got you so engrossed? It must be good, if you two are willing to skip dinner.”
“Oh, uh, it’s the latest Final Fantasy VII Remake! I’ve never played it before, but Adam has, and then I started playing it too and it’s just so good and the battles are super cool and it’s a lot of fun to play--” Sio started gesticulating wildly, chopsticks flinging rice haphazardly and Adam had to sternly remind her to not toss food everywhere.
“Oy squirt, calm down! Say it, don’t spray it.” He muttered, flicking a piece of rice off his shirt.
“And then they even sent a VR headset! Which I’m super curious about,” Sio finally finished her bento, so they could talk without the risk of food flying about. “You guys should try it out too! I-I mean, not that I’m forcing you two to play video games if you’re not interested...”
Mahesh hummed in amusement, looking at least mildly fascinated. “I’m probably a ‘casual’ gamer by yours and Adam’s standards, but I’d be willing to try out this virtual reality deal. I wonder how it compares with Capa’s illusions...”
“Ugh, don’t remind me,” Sio grimaced, still remembering all those inappropriate pictures Capa took (and then distributed, the nerve of him). “Pervy old man...”
“Well, certainly we won’t have to worry about that. Let’s all check it out, then; Jess, you in?”
The blonde nodded, though not without conceding that gaming wasn’t really her thing, but it might be fun to watch others.
“I’m more of an analogue girl; I don’t care that much for all those flashy explosions on screen, but bring me a set of Catan or Dixit and I’ll play any day.”
Now the entire squad was circled in the living room, the large windows open for some fresh, night air. After some rigging, Adam managed to figure out how to configure an output so those who weren’t wearing the headset could see what was going on, via his laptop.
“Alright, now who’s our first lucky contestant? Sio-chan, since you seem so excited, why don’t you go first?”
The sniper squeaked, not being used to put on the spot. “M, M-Me? U-Uh, I’ve been playing a lot of games today, s-so, why don’t you or Jess try it?” She laughed nervously, hoping they wouldn’t force her to take center stage.
“Yeh Mirza, you seem awfully eager to see how it works...why don’t you give it a whirl,” Adam goaded. Those dark eyes seem to meet his in a challenge, before the Indian resolutely put on the gear.
Everybody else watched eagerly as the screen loaded up. “Whoa; I’m not going to lie, the graphics aren’t photorealistic, but it sure feels like you’re somewhere else,” Mahesh gingerly stepped around, everyone suddenly giving him a wide berth as he set up the boundaries. “Please warn me if I’m about to run into something, or someone; I can’t exactly see anything in the real world...”
“I wonder if we’ll ever get to the point where it’ll feel even more like we’re inside a different world,” Sio said quietly to Adam, as Mahesh started playing a rhythm-action game called Beat Saber. “I don’t like Capa, but I have to admit his AU weapon is incredible. When I was doing those training exercises, it really felt like I was in a jungle, or in the middle of Shibuya...”
“Maybe; but I think we’ve got a ways to go,” Adam responded dryly, arching an eyebrow as the Indian flailed his arms all over the place. “...Definitely a ways to go.”
After a couple of tracks, Adam couldn’t take it anymore; seeing Mirza’s piss-poor coordination and timing destroyed any sense of fun or pleasure from the thumping EDM/techno tracks provided by the game. “Alright, you’ve had your fun. Let me give it a try.”
“More like Adam can’t stand Mahesh butchering those songs anymore,” Jess whispered, and Sio giggled. “He doesn’t like talking about his hobbies, but I know for a fact he’s into these music-type games. Who else do you think petitioned to get that dancing revolution machine installed in the Logan’s workout room...”
Before Sio could fully realize that statement, Adam took over. He selected a track that none of them had ever heard of before, and despite this being his first time playing, immediately notched the difficulty up to Hard. “Someone’s tryin’ to show off, eh?” Mahesh teased, but that didn’t seem to deter the silver-haired man one bit. If anything, Adam was laser-focused on the track before him, slicing through the colored blocks flying past with coordinated ease, as if he’d memorized the track beforehand.
“Whoa, he’s so good...how the heck does he know where to slice and stuff? I can barely keep up with what color they are, let alone what direction to hit,” Sio murmured, staring at the neon-colored action in awe. “There’s no way...he hasn’t played this before, has he?” She watched as Adam completed another combo streak, his multiplier at the max of 8x. “What the hell...”
Mahesh shrugged. “Who knows; I don’t think so, since VR is so new, but that’s Adam for you. Always full of hidden surprises...and probably some he hasn’t even revealed yet.” The trio watched in silence until Adam finished the track, with an impressive score of A, to their fervent applause.
“Well that was an ace performance! Especially for your first try.”
“No kidding; what, can you see the blocks before they appear or something? Sure you don’t have some hidden ability to see the future?” Jess jokingly suggested, though for some reason Adam flinched a bit at the statement.
“...Ha ha, real funny. If you must know, it helps a lot when you’re familiar with the song...”
“Eh? Adam-san, so you like this type of music, huh? Electronica?”
For some reason the sniper’s question made him blush, his cheeks turning even redder than they already were from the faux-workout. “Uh, yeh...I listen to a whole bunch of stuff, just so happens I recognized this track, and uh, decided to give it a go...”
“Now now, no need to be modest! Music or not, you really are good at this type of stuff. I guess we shouldn’t be surprised, given how skilled you are on the battlefield...” Mahesh praised.
“Yeh, and it’s a good thing you’re a defender-type, not an attacker; otherwise we’d be long dead already,” Adam replied sarcastically, making a jab at the Indian’s less-than-stellar hand-eye coordination. “Anyway, I’m headin’ up; that took more out of me than I expected, and I want a quick rinse before bed. G’night.”
“Oh uh, good night, Adam-san,” Sio watched curiously as he climbed up the stairs. “I wonder if he’s upset about something...it’s not that late,” she glanced at the clock, which just hit 10:30pm. “Maybe he’s tired.”
“Or, more like someone’s just bashful. Don’t worry Sio, he’s not offended. I just don’t think he’s the type who likes being the center of attention all of a sudden,” Jess mused, as Mahesh picked up the controls again. “Ironic, considering he’s our de facto platoon leader.”
“Well, you don’t have to be outgoing to be a leader, I guess.” Sio nodded, reaffirming her thoughts. Adam was not the smoothest talker, but he had a certain charisma, especially on the battlefield. While Nobunaga’s e-gene was invaluable for strategizing, she wouldn’t deny that Adam knew how to adapt and call the shots, especially in the heat of battle. It was the same type of charisma she felt now, that inexplicably drew her towards him, despite his stoicism and sometimes abrasive words.
‘Though, he’s definitely less harsh, now. Not just his words, but the way he acts, around everybody too...’
He was a kind person, she decided. Probably just not used to letting his guard down, and Sio had a feeling that was partly due to his childhood, of being alone and having to fend for himself. ‘Kinda like me, except I’m just super awkward and terrible with talking to people in general...’
“I liked that song he played...I don’t usually listen to music without lyrics, but it’s really catchy. I kinda wanna listen to it again...” Sio pondered as the rest of the group finally decided to retire for the night.
“Why don’t you go ask him?” Sio blinked in surprise as Mahesh sidled up next to her. “He said he’d heard it before, right? Maybe he can share it with you.”
“Ah, I—uh, I don’t, wanna bother him with something trivial like that...” She laughed nervously, though Mahesh simply winked at her. She stopped short of the attic staircase right before the room, and looked up. The door was already closed, and he was probably already asleep, but Mahesh’s suggestion repeated itself in her mind.
‘Actually, maybe I will...after all, why not. I’ll ask him tomorrow...what kind of music he likes...’
If she was lucky, maybe he’d even offer to let her listen to some. Flushing hotly at the thought, Sio quickly went into her room and dove underneath the covers.
‘Ah Sio...what are you getting yourself into now...’

AniRevo 2019!
I’ve been a little con crazy lately! Kumoricon last October, Emerald City Comic Con in March, Sakura-Con in April, Anime Expo in July, EVO just the other week, and now Anime Revolution, too! I know I’ve been super absent, but I should be done with traveling until November! Thank you everyone for your patience with me!
Tumblr media
Admittedly, I am super exhausted, so I won’t be writing much here, but I do want to gush a bit about Anime Revolution. It was my first time at this particular con, and I’ve heard some troubling things surrounding it, but I found the convention to be one of—if not the—best-managed cons that I’ve ever attended. Though I was sadly only able to be there for a few hours today, everything felt remarkably clear, neat, and organized. And I had a blast!
Me being me, I largely went to Vancouver for the Kill la Kill actors and panels at AniRevo. Today’s panel was “Kill la Kill: Talk the Talk” with Ami Koshimizu (Ryuko), Ryoka Yuzuki (Satsuki), and Nobuyuki Hiyama (Uzu). And I want to write a lot more about said panel later because it was so sweet and had some great tidbits about the show and actors that I never knew before!
But for now, I’ll say that the passion these three have for the anime is beyond charming, and I think my favorite takeaway is that Hiyama had actually originally auditioned for Senketsu! This surprised me, and it seemed to surprise Koshimizu and Yuzuki as well, judging by Koshimizu’s big “Ehhhh?!?!?!” and the following conversation that Yuzuki and Koshimizu had about “wearing their senpai”! Me also being me, another comment that got me was Koshimizu’s note that “Senketsu would probably be stronger than Ryuko if he were voiced by Hiyama.” Toshihiko Seki made Senketsu a bottom LOL.
The panel also had two special prizes at the end—won by answering trivia questions! The first question, to win a Kill la Kill playmat signed by Koshimizu, Yuzuki, and Hiyama, was about what other Kill la Kill actors had attended AniRevo before. Since it was only my first time going, I wasn’t in a position to win (and only one person actually had an answer at all!)
Buuut the next question, to win a Guts backpack, was about identifying Guts’s voice actor. I must be the worst Kill la Kill superfan in the world because I totally blanked on Katsuyuki Konichi’s name, but since nobody else had an answer besides the person who already won the first prize, I guess my response of “the same actor as Tsumugu Kinagase” was good enough!
Tumblr media
I won the Guts backpack, and Ami Koshimizu herself presented it to me and helped me put it on my back! I’m so embarrassed that she got an up-close look at the horrible craftsmanship on my Senketsu’s sailor collar as she adjusted Guts, but oh my goodness! I still can’t believe this actually happened and that Koshimizu called me cute. While I didn’t manage to get an autograph from Koshimizu as I wanted (as her signings for today began shortly after the panel, and her line was already full by that time), I can’t be upset with what I did get. That experience has gotta be better than any autograph!
But I did manage to get autographs from Ryoka Yuzuki and Nobuyuki Hiyama. I actually got a “small” package of Kill la Kill books in the mail last week...
Tumblr media
...and I thought right away that it’d be neat for Ami Koshimizu to sign the Ryuko side of the Kill la Kill Key Animation Art Book Complete Box and for Ryoka Yuzuki to sign the Satsuki side of the box at AniRevo, but I faltered a bit because holy moly, y’all. This box and the three books inside it are huge.

Like, for comparison, this is the Key Animation Art Book Complete Box next to the Limited Edition box for the game:
Tumblr media
And here’s the box next to one of the Limited Edition Blu-rays:
Tumblr media
It is big. And heavy.
I was like, “Do I really wanna haul that thing around the con?”
And the answer is yes. I did. And I got Ryoka Yuzuki to sign the Satsuki side!
Tumblr media
She’d never seen the box before and thought it was the neatest thing! I’m happy I got to show it to her because while I did get the box slightly damaged at a discounted rate, it’s still absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite things in my ginormous Kill la Kill collection. This set is gorgeous and should be re-released!
(And, for the record, Yuzuki is the sweetest. She said “Senketsu!” when she saw me, said I looked good wearing him and told me to be careful walking home (presumably because he’s so skimpy OMG), and was just over-the-moon excited about this box. She kept looking it over and saying 凄い!You can really tell that she loves this show a lot, and it is just. So, so, so sweet. She’s just as much of a fan as we are!)
Nobuyuki Hiyama was super sweet, too! He recognized me as the winner of the Guts backpack from the panel, and I just wish I had something with more Uzu on it for him to sign! I ended up picking the censored American cover of the game because that is like one of the only things in my ginormous Kill la Kill collection that actually has Uzu on the front and its super light.
Tumblr media
(But really, I have 43 Kill la Kill books/magazines now, and only the second Official Settings Materials book has Uzu on the cover??? Give this poor man some more love, Trigger! C’mon, so many top competitors loved playing Uzu at EVO!)
Anyway, tl;dr, I was only at AniRevo for like five hours, but it was a dang great five hours! I can’t thank @lostperdue enough for taking my no-car-and-can-barely-drive butt over there!
And now that this convention is done, I’m not planning any more until Kumoricon in November, so I should be able to like, actually blog again!
And finish the game!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
tfw you’ve played 25+ hours and over 100 versus matches and still haven’t even beaten the story mode.....

Same anon here: I agree! they didn't have a choice to release it now, especially with the leaks. (I kind of wanted to be vague about some of the development things like the awful crunch time as well. I can definitely see people disliking the game , because they hate the conditions that it was made in!)I haven't had a chance to play for more then a minute or two myself, though the gameplay did seam pretty solid. I'm not sure 'fun' is the right word, but its hard to put my thoughts into words
Basically, I can't fault the game for what it is! I get the vague feeling that people basically have seen some of the messages done better, with frequent comparisons to Spec. Ops: The Line and Undertale. But I'm not sure thats what the director was actually going for, though. I think he wanted to write a story about pain, and flawed characters trying to survive in a stressful, flawed world kind of thing. Or at least, this game wasn't trying to be those games. (2/3)
Anyway, I LOVE your long posts. I've only seen negative posts, so its great seeing people enjoying it. (3/3)
i get that! if people choose not to support due to the working conditions, i completely understand that. i would love to go into video game development one day, but i know i wouldnt be able to manage under the conditions of most game studios, especially as a disabled person. so i have a lot of stake in seeing working conditions improve for video game development and am mostly sticking to indie right now myself! if thats someones reason for not supporting it, 100% understand
i haven’t seen people comparing it to those games, though i’ve mostly stayed away from reading about it until my thoughts solidify a little more and i have some more time to sit with the game. i personally havent played spec ops the line, but i did have my roommate explain it to me, and from what he said, it seems to be more strictly anti-war and anti-violence? maybe this isnt the correct takeaway, but while tlou was also anti violence, i dont think it’s message can be reduced to “murder is bad”. to me, it was a very personal story about trauma, and how continuing the cycles of violence is ultimately meaningless and will destroy your life. if you look at both this game and the first one, it never goes out of its way to condemn violence or even murder when its in self defense or to protect someone else. ellie kills multiple people in the first game, and they bring it up very casually in this one. and the people abby kills to protect lev dont come across as sympathetic. even at the end, in dialogue we hear the prisoners fighting back against the rattlers, and that is not shown as a bad thing. so i think the people going “yeah we get it murder is bad” are ... still sort of missing the point? the key moments of the game are when abby and then ellie respectively decide to break the cycle of violence. i think thats more important and a more meaningful takeaway
i ..... suppose i get why people might try to compare it to undertale? theyre just SUCH different games that im sort of struggling with that. i also have only done pacifist run of undertale, so im not sure what happens in other branches! maybe its just the fact that you have the OPTION to do a pacifist run. but not all games have to be about choice. and for a game like this, it really can’t be. it took them 7 years and, yeah, like you said, a lot of horrid crunch time to make this one. i dont understand why people are mad they didn’t basically make TWO games with entirely different narratives. write some fanfic and get it out of your systems folks if you want to see an entirely different story
im glad you enjoy my long posts ^^’ its good to know im not rambling to no one. and if there IS anything specific people would like takes on, hmu! otherwise i will just continue to reblog nice fanart of my wife abby and love this game in peace

Have you seen this???

You Guys! This Book! For Real!
Plain-spoken, headstrong Ophelia cares little about appearances. Her ability to read the past of objects is unmatched in all of Anima and, what’s more, she possesses the ability to travel through mirrors, a skill passed down to her from previous generations. Her idyllic life is disrupted, however, when she is promised in marriage to Thorn, a taciturn and influential member of a distant clan. Ophelia must leave all she knows behind and follow her fiancé to Citaceleste, the capital of a cold, icy ark known as the Pole, where danger lurks around every corner and nobody can be trusted. There, in the presence of her inscrutable future husband, Ophelia slowly realizes that she is a pawn in a political game that will have far-reaching ramifications not only for her but for her entire world.
Wait, I’m gonna start by addressing two recurring critiques I saw on Amazon.
It seems that those who gave it a lower rating did so because A) they were disturbed by the abuse and neglect the main character suffers through most of the plot and that B) said plot was slow.
First of all, if reading about abuse is triggering for you or just really not your cup of tea, that's one thing and completely fair. Don’t give it a try.
But these reviews, as is typical of Amazon, are so misleading. While the main character, Ophelia (and several other characters, for that matter), certainly suffers abuse and neglect, some people seem to be fixating on the fact that abuse and neglect exist at all, painting a "bleak" picture. What bothers me is that they cry about abuse, but totally ignore the victim’s ultimate response to it. We should be paying attention to how victims overcome their suffering, and what Ophelia discovers are some of the core values of feminism. It’s a terrific takeaway, particularly for female readers, but really all readers of any age and gender.
Criticism B can be taken as a trade-off: basic, slow-moving plot-line in exchange for total immersion. Trust me, it’s a satisfying trade.
Anyway.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this novel. I was so intrigued and occupied that I flew through it in two days, and I felt the nearly foreign urge to immediately restart the story in order to better savor the details.
Things I Want to Talk About
Comparisons
To break it down, I would say Dabos’s style is a delightful mix of the murky magic of Dianna Wynne Jones; the quirky prose of J.K. Rowling; the dark pragmatism of Phillip Pullman; and, lastly, the fantastical atmosphere of Hiyao Miyazaki. It’s a really good cocktail, but it is definitely particular. So, I would caution those looking for something more mainstream, in style and substance.
World-Building
In a word, it is stellar.
For me, what makes it stand out from other fantasy novels is that the characters know their world. So many fantasy novels follow a common formula where the reader and the protagonist learn about the latter’s powers and world simultaneously, or the protagonist has to explain everything, usually in 1st person, so it feels jarringly unnatural. Not so here. All of the characters are familiar to some extent with various aspects of their broken-up, semi-diasporic world: the arks, the people who live on those arks, the powers attached to those arks, etc.
As far as we need be concerned, things just Are, everyone already Is, without over-exposition, which is a tricky but essential quality, particularly where magic is the key component of a story.
Character Development
At this point in the series, I would call it characterization more than development because there isn’t so much growth happening as there is unfolding layers. The best example is, naturally, Ophelia. Some of the Amazon reviewers criticize her lack of strength or find her too timid—but that’s sort of the point. Every character in the book underestimates her and the reader, I think, is supposed to feel that way too. And yet, through every adversity, she keeps moving forward, without tears or self-pity or defeat, but with resolve. I’m not sure where certain readers overlooked that point, or if they simply forgot that this is the first book in a four-novel series and things won’t just happen all at once.
But Ophelia is, like, every bookworm ever who was called shy and timid just because she was quiet and observant. And as is so often the case with “shy” people, she’s anything but. Ophelia isn’t like the outwardly assertive #strong woman heroine over-saturating the YA market right now (which, trust me, I appreciate as much as the next). But she does find more mettle in her than she thought, she can take pride in being able to face herself in a mirror and accept herself for who she is, and she’s loyal to her principles, even when that means things might end up being the worse for her. #strong woman indeed.
The other standout is Thorn, obviously, because he is frightfully enigmatic at all times, there’s weight to every scene he’s in, and you’re never, ever sure what he’s up to, if his motives are honest, if his intentions are good, all bad, sorta bad. I also really appreciate that we, as readers, cannot (yet) rely on him or his political power to protect Ophelia from the traps around her. We learn, as Ophelia does, that ultimately she must be her own savior.
Ambiguity
This is not a straight-forward love story! I don’t know if it will even become a love story, but there’s heaps of foreshadowing to that end and it definitely follows the enemies-to-lovers trope. A straight-forward love story really is out of the question where ever an arranged marriage is concerned, which isn’t to say that there isn’t or won’t be a developing romance. It’s simply more subtle and non-conventional. But there is undeniably a slow, slow burning chemistry between Ophelia and Thorn. His anti-social behavior and her indifference are what make their relationship deliciously difficult to categorize, at this point.
Lastly
My only real criticism is that the translation is shaky in some parts and I really wished I was even the slightest bit familiar with French. The best way I can describe the narrative, which is already being told in 3rd person, is that at times it’s like you’re being held at arm’s length and I can’t tell if that’s down to the translation or if that’s how it was written by Dabos.
Anyway, go read it! 2nd book comes out in English in May!

EpiPen Affordability Resources
Hey, friends! A post of ours on EpiPens has been making the rounds lately, and folks have been reblogging with all kinds of incredible tips, tricks, and resources. It’s time to get all that great information in one place!
This is a masterpost covering prescription EpiPen alternatives, coupons, financial aid, gaming the system, and even DIY options. The tips are mainly by and for folks in the U.S., since prices are so outrageous here, but some tips will come in handy regardless of country.
We’ll keep it updated as additional advice comes in (including info specific to other countries!), so as this gets reblogged and passed around, be sure to return to the original post for the latest.
See also: EpiPen tips you might not know
Generics & Alternatives
General Information
There’s no direct-linked generic for the EpiPen. An EpiPen generic is on its way! This may mean you can get a generic without a different prescription, but time will have to tell.
To access certain “generics” and alternative products, your doctor needs to specifically write a prescription for “epinephrine auto-injector” or the specific product.
Many doctors are kept from prescribing alternatives by insurance. Learn more here.
Procedure for generics and alternatives can differ from standard EpiPens, so be sure to read the instructions carefully and request a free trainer to try it out yourself.
Expiration dates are sometimes based less on whether or not the medicine is still safe, and more on generic laws. One reader notes that Adrenaclicks aren’t actually expired unless they are cloudy, so do some research on your medication to see if you can safely stretch it.
Adrenaclick
Noted to be hard to find and often not covered by insurance.
Pharmacies are not legally allowed to prescribe this if patients can’t afford an EpiPen.
Harder to use, as needle does not retract automatically; can bend or break off in leg.
As of early 2017, CVS cut the out of pocket price to $109.99 for two.
Coupon for 75% off Adrenaclick ($13.75 each)
Auvi-Q
Once recalled due to inaccurate dosages, which caused it to drop off folks’ radar.
Previously only available from manufacturer (order form here), but Kaleo has recently partnered with Walgreens to bring their injectors to the pharmacy.
Features: rectangular, the size of a credit card, smaller needle that retracts automatically, voice instruction, shorter coundown.
$0-15 with insurance; they try to keep it to $0 out of pocket, too. Visit their website for information on how to get them through their direct-delivery scheme.
Coupons and financial aid program offered by manufacturer to help keep them affordable.
Review and additional info by 1pandamanypanda.
Lineage Therapeutics
More compact and good for small hands.
Much cheaper, with coupons offered by manufacturer
DIY
Make your own auto-injector for ~$30 with this DIY “EpiPencil” from Four Thieves Vinegar
⚠️ Extremely risky option ⚠️ carry a bottle of epinephrine and syringes and inject yourself.
This is “almost impossible to do if you’re in the heat of anaphylaxis” according to Dr. Jacqueline Eghrari-Sabet, and really only a viable option if you’re a trained medical professional (via Buzzfeed).
Other folks won’t know how to dose you if you’re unable to do it yourself.
Ways to Save
Coupons
Coupons can be used whether or not you have insurance! If a pharmacist tries to tell you otherwise, politely ask that they try to run the coupon anyway, as they may not be aware of this fact.
Get up to $300 off EpiPens with Mylan’s savings card (3 cartons/yr. max).
Get up to $25 off Mylan’s generic injector with this savings card.
Get 75% off Adrenaclick ($13.75 each) with this coupon.
Get $50 off an Impax brand generic injector with this coupon.
Ask around at pharmacies to see if they have coupons. One reader got two for $15 from CVS after calling around to different pharmacies.
Use sites like GoodRx to find coupons.
Shopping around
Use sites like GoodRx to comparison shop.
Remember that Costco’s pharmacies are accessible without a membership, and often have prescriptions for much less.
Financial Aid
Apply for a patient assistance program (PAP) through the pharmaceutical company
Info on Mylan’s program can be found here (scroll down).
Eligibility requirements are set by the pharmaceutical company.
Some places have emergency programs for folks below a certain income level. Ask your doctor if there’s anything they can do for you! (See also: Legal & Gaming the System)
Legal & Gaming the System
Your doctor may be able to get free samples from their pharmaceutical rep.
Mylan has a school partnership program that supplies EpiPens to schools for free.
Some state laws require that schools stock EpiPens, but this doesn’t always happen in practice; you may need to make some calls to be sure this happens.
EpiPens are available over the counter in Canada at $100 CDN for two, and can be brought over the border to the U.S. without a special permit.
Non-U.S. Resources
Australia
Buying EpiPens without a prescription is expensive, but if you see a doctor and tell them you’ve been hospitalized recently for anaphylaxis, you can get them covered by Medicare with only a couple of bucks out of pocket.
The person giving this tip knows someone who, with a sympathetic doctor, was able to do this based on a hospital visit when she was 5 years old. The takeaway? Be vague and don’t offer details.

Allen’s Rambling: Playing a Fighting Game for Story (Under Night In-Birth)
Recently, I got my hands on Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st], or UNIEST for short, a fighting game I’ve been looking forward to playing for almost half a year now. I know Dragonball Fighter Z is the fighting game that everyone cares about at the moment, but this is a game I’ve been wanting a little more... and DBFZ has too many problems with its... everything as a fighting game (a lacking tutorial, a tragically basic challenge mode, not explaining tools for high-level play within the game, etc.). So, I feel like talking about UNIEST for a bit while I’m taking a break from its Chronicle Mode, give my first impressions and all that now that I’ve only got about 7 prologues left to get through. Hopefully I won’t Ramble on about this, but... we’ll see. Yeah too late, I rambled, as usual... jeez, saying that phrase tends screws me over way to much and gives me a butt load of editing to do. But anyway, here goes.
Expanding and Explain the Lore
I like how Chronicle Mode gives us much more context to the arcade mode. It’s sort of the reverse of how Guilty Gear Xrd did it’s arcade and story modes. Rather than the Arcade mode being the prologue to the story mode, the story mode explains what is going on in everyone’s arcade mode, with each new prologue giving more and more context to each character and the setting overall. Every character has their own little prologue selection that goes on for about 3 to 4 chapters that explains their motives and past, with each prologue in itself being about 1 to 2 hours long depending on your reading speed. The only exception at this point seems to be Vatista, who is moreso giving exposition to the lore of the world in her prologue chapters. That’s harmless overall given her role in the story is more of an observer than an actual character moving the plot, and her own Arcade mode being her finally going out and observing things.
While the game was coming out I often found myself jokingly thinking that the world of UNIEST was going to be some extension of the Nasuverse given the inclusion of Sion as a character. Though I was joking at the time it really feels like Nasu had his hand in this series in terms of writing, as I see some of the same issues I had when playing Fate/Extella.
I have two major issues with the game as far as its story mode and writing is concerned: the pacing, and the localization.
Pacing
This is where most of the Nasuverse comparisons come from. Now to be fair to UNIEST, “bad pacing” is kind of a subjective critique nowadays due to it being thrown out far too much for its own good (my own posts and critiques not helping), so I’ll say that the pacing just feels slow to me personally. I feel like there’s too much idle chatter going on with people talking about things that aren’t important to the plot. For an example, in Orie’s prologue she’s talking to her friend/partner Lex about moving to Kanzakai, the location of the game. They discuss a bit about the mission, Orie goes into thought about her opinions of it, we learn a lot about Orie’s personality and nature when she isn’t in Licht Kreis Mode and slaying Voids, and so on. This is fine, but sometimes it felt like their friendly conversations about sweets, fashion, what restaurant to eat at, and adjusting to Japanese customs felt more like padding at times than characterization. This is all fine on paper, as it expands on both Orie and Lex’s personality, and it does lead to some interested interactions with Wagner when she appears, but for me it just feel like it drags. The main takeaways from Orie’s prologue is that she’s going to Kanzakai on an undercover/infiltration mission to learn about Amnesia and Paradox, work as something close to Wagner’s probation officer and make sure she doesn’t go to wild, and show off her personality when she isn’t in Licht Kreis Mode. The extra bits just feel unneeded to an extent. You could just skip to the restaurant scene after Orie and Lex get to Kanzakai, cut out half the dialogue about cakes and uniforms, and things would flow a little better. Though... that’s just my own opinion.
I think a better prologue that did this sort of small talk/tangent thing well was Yuzuriha’s and Wagner’s. In Yurzuriha’s prologue we learn that she’s reluctantly the In-Birth Guardian of Kanzakai due to her older sister losing her powers on her first day of the job, and that while she knows that big things are going down in the city and is knowledgeable the Hallow Night, she’d rather just do nothing to draw attention to herself and keeps the peace by slowly crushing any rising powers making a ruckus. We also learn about the formation of Bankikai and #BestBoy Ogre. The writing goes into its usual smaller conversations and small talk, but it works a lot better in this case. Yuzuriha going on and explaining the Hallow Night in depth to Ogre makes since due to her wanting to make sure he understands that forming organizations will only worsen the situation as rising powers clash and only give rise to more Voids and more In-Births to create an endless cycle. It also shows that as knowledgeable as she is about it, Yuzuriha doesn’t give a damn about what goes on in the Hallow Night outside of keeping the peace and is only explaining things to Ogre because she doesn’t want to deal with him later... and she only had a broom to fight with at the time. On Ogre’s end, he was the type of character to make small talk, flirt, and go on long, hammy spiels about his goals, which constantly annoyed Yuzuriha, but it played well with the tone of the scenes and honestly made Ogre very endearing.
Speaking of endearing characters, the writing style of the prologues also helped Wagner’s character well too. She’s the newest playable character that I was personally interested in learning about. Wagner’s name actually came up several times in the the arcade modes of the previous game. From what we knew she was a mix of a merciless Templar that slaughtered anyone and everyone under the name of Licht Kreis, a wildcard that was Licht Kreis’s ace in the hole, and someone that Orie either feared, despised, or saw as a rival of some kind. The main takeaways from her prologue is that she is on probation after “overdoing it” in a past mission and has to live in Japan to cool her head with two attendants managing/confiscating her sword and shield, and while she personally views Orie as a rival Orie herself just sees her as a dangerous person that’s a pain to deal with. Those were the takeways, but the prologue does a lot to humanize Wagner and make her an interesting character. When not in Licht Kreis Mode she’s actually very endearing, being someone that knows little about society outside of battle. She struggles with academics due to her not liking the structure of Japanese schools, but slowly loving the more social aspect of it. She has a slight dependence on her attendants for more social activities. She’s a horrible actor to the point that her undercover backstory was that of being a shelter rich girl so she didn’t have to force herself to act in anyway and blow her cover. It’s all humanizing stuff from someone that was hyped up as a fiery, brutal killer of Voids throughout the series. She’s just... a socially awkward rich girl outside of battle, and it’s pretty enduring.
And just before I move on to talk about the localization I’ll just say that Carmine and Enkidu’s prologues could had easily been two chapters instead of three. The long conversations and small talk were just... out of character for those two, Carmine especially, though he is a lot more likable to me now, and Enkidu might just be my favorite character story-wise for his simplicity and how he bounces off Chaos and Hilda in Amnesia.
Now then...
The Localization
The localization... is terrible.
No, I’m not kidding, this is some godawful localizing. Spell check apparently didn’t even exist when translating this script. Seriously, take a shot everytime you see a spelling or grammar error. Actually, don’t do that, you’ll die before you finish the first prologue. I mean... jeez, I know mistakes happen, and my own writings tend to be riddled with grammar issues here and there, but the amount I’m seeing here is just inexcusable. The misspellings especially. Serious, was spell check a thing when they translated this? Especially since there’s no dub every moment of grammar errors and misspellings seems more egregious. Reading these cutscenes and visual novel moments are a pain when I have to figure out what a character is actually saying. Which brings me to another issue.
There’s no dub, and that rustles my jimmies something fierce.
I don’t care how controversial it is for me to talk about this anymore. I don’t care how little the FGC cares for dubs and stories in fighting games. I don’t care about EVO, NorCal, SoCal, or anything other bull excuse used for a proper lacking localization. I kept my mouth shut about this when it came to Blazblue and Guilty Gear outside of some grumbles and general reactive whining, but now I’m actually pissed. There was no excuse this time for lacking a dub here, especially with the large window of time between the JP and NA release dates.
For those that are curious, it was about 6 months. I remember Arc System saying something to the effect of having to delay Blazblue Central Fiction by about 6 month if they were to dub it. Six months... and this game has much less story stuff going on than in Blazblue. I remember people saying that BBCF needed to come out sooner so people outside of Japan could train for EVO. Folks, anyone that gives a damn about fighting games on a competitive level will import unless the time gap is a week’s difference or less. Period. Everyone else will either just do local tournaments, or is playing casually by extension of the more series side of the FGC. And frankly, EVO tends to be dominated by Japanese players anyway, so... I’m narrowing my eyes when I hear things like that. When this game had such a large time gap I think most of us figured it was for a dub, especially with Dragonball Fighter Z coming out just barely a month beforehand. However... no such luck, this game was basically delayed, had a poor release time, and I’m willing to bet money it was so this game could flop and they’d have an excuse to probably not dub Cross Tag Battle due to low interest in what would be one fourth of that game’s rooster (technically one eighth, but that’s a Rambling for another day).
Ugh, but I won’t whine about that any further, continuing to type this is only making me angrier... moving on.
Themes of Under Night
Now what kind of writer would I be if I didn’t at least try to talk about the narrative themes of UNIEST’s story? I’ll be honest. I’m having a hard time thinking of its themes. Not that it doesn’t have any mind you, but... I can’t really place my finger on it yet. Maybe it’s because I haven’t completed Chronicle Mode yet, but there is a theme in this game’s story.
And it’s probably something really Japanese.
I’m not just saying that because this is a Japanese Anime Fighting Game, but... the story is constantly drilling in how peaceful Japan is despite how combative the Hallow Night is by nature. Wald and Enkidu are constantly going on about how they feel out of play being warriors in such peaceful times. Carmine talks about how hard it is to be a street punk picking fights in modern times. Orie and Wagner are bring up how peaceful and different Japan is compared to the warzones they’ve been in while in Licht Kreis. The list goes on, but the fact that this story takes place in a peaceful country like Japan is drilled into you. I still have quite a few characters to finish in terms of prologues, but... there’s something, some kind of commentary on peace and violence. Chaos heavily stresses that Amnesia never goes too far to kill people in these modern times in Enkidu’s prologue, Gordeu remarks how fights aren’t to the death despite the tension between warring groups.
There’s... something here, but I can’t put my finger on it, probably due to my Western origins and beliefs. I’m sure if I talked about this with my Xenny might be able to piece together something since he’s learning the language and I get the feeling the theme might be lost in translation somewhere, but... for now, it’s all speculation until I finish the prologues.
As a game overall, this is a huge improvement to the original Under Night. There’s an in depth tutorial mode, there’s a Mission Mode to learn combos, there’s an network mode that’s leagues better than DBFZ at this point in terms of structure and netcode. If anyone in the FGC felt a little burnt by how Dragonball Fighter Z handled things like the tutorial and challenge mode and just generally not providing things for high-level play, I highly recommend giving UNIEST a shot, especially if you’re interested in Blazblue Cross Tag Battle.

Lastly, I would a moment of silence for Ogre, who has a great character design, interesting personality, had the coolest name for a special ability (Gate of Hades), but will never be playable due to... plot reasons. Farewell playboy fedora man, I would had definitely subbed you if you were playable.
