Adam looked up and jumped in his seat, seeing a flash of black and brown race past him along the floor. He stood up at his desk. “Ugh, no, no! You’re not staying in here, come back—,”

Before he had a chance to stop the creature, it had scurried under a wardrobe, perfectly out of Adam’s reach. He sighed frustratedly and put his hands on his hips, when Belle came in.

“Hey. What is it?”

“Maurice’s cat has snuck in here again,” he said, irritated as ever.

Belle’s face, however, lit up. “Oh, Athena is here?? Where is she?”

“God, it has a name?”

“Of course she does,” she hit his arm with the back of her hand as she walked past. “Where did she go?”

“She’s just there, under the wardrobe.”

Belle crouched down and held out a finger, speaking in a light, friendly voice. “Athena! Come here, girl.”

Slow but sure, the fluffy, tortoiseshell cat emerged from under the wardrobe, sniffing Belle’s finger and then rubbing her face along her entire hand. Belle grinned and reciprocated by petting her neck and back. “Aw, what a sweet girl you are. Come here.” Belle then scooped her up, standing with the floofy creature limp in her arms. “See? She’s only a baby!”

Adam rolled his eyes. “We’re not keeping it.”

“Oh, come on, love. She makes Reecy so happy.”

He sighed. “She’s only going to cause problems.”

“Well, that’s what you said about Reece, too.”

Adam’s mouth fell open indignantly. “I did not!” When Belle chuckled and started carrying the cat out of the room, Adam muttered, “he does, though.”

Belle turned and laughed. “And yet we keep him here, don’t we!”

“Darling, are you really comparing our relationship with our son, to his relationship with some feral cat that came from the woods?”

“Sometimes family chooses us, love.”

Adam crossed his arms and rolled his eyes.

“Sylvie found us, didn’t she?”

“Sylvie is a good and loyal animal. She listens to us. You can’t control this thing.”

Belle was scratching behind the “thing’s” ears, she was starting to purr. “How loyal can Sylvie be, if she’s sleeping in Renée’s room instead of ours tonight?”

“She’s loyal to her family. This creature isn’t loyal to anyone but nature. And even then, I have my doubts.”

“All I know is Reecy loves her. He’s so much happier taking care of her! I think it could teach him a lot about responsibility.”

Adam uncrossed his arms, walking over hesitantly. He and the cat stared each other down, until finally the cat’s eyes closed from the euphoria of all of Belle’s petting.

He groaned, giving in to the rest of his ridiculous family, as usual. “Well, fine, then. But the first thing he needs to teach her is to keep out of our room.”

Belle snorted, “You had that rule about Sylvie when she first got here, now we all barely fit on the bed together.”

“Yeah, yeah. Out with her,” he said, waving his hand and turning to go to his desk.

“You’ll learn to love her, I just know it!” Belle called with a smile.

“Don’t hold your breath!”

Belle jokingly inhaled loudly, turning and leaving the room. Adam rolled his eyes again, sighing and looking back at his work, finally undisturbed.

Honestly might be able to to something with the gross stuff I saw at the hardware store I used to work at (except make it hot and 141)

Imagine you're a cashier, the only one with early morning availability so you're there at 5:45am for the 6am start. It's always the worst kinds of contractors there: rude, tired, dirty, leering gazes and sexist comments

You're pretty sick of it, but you get paid a bit more than minimum wage and you're done by 11am so, you take it with a cheery smile and fast service

The 141 contracting company starts spending at your store. So much, in fact, that your manager personally takes you aside to mention just how much they do - nearly a million a year - and how no matter what, your job is to be nice and please them

Well, you can do that. You've dealt with crazy, awful old contractors screaming in your face about lumber prices at 6:30am more than once, heard them talking about your tit's or your ass right in front of you - you can handle it

Until the masked one comes in first and hes huge, dark hoodie and cargo pants hanging low on his hips. He hands you 3k in bills only there are bloodstains on them and he watches you closely the whole time you count them out

It's... not a first, but the look he gives you makes you shiver. Pale eyelashes, tall, intimidating

The second is nicer. Too nice, in fact. He charms you before you're even fully awake, and your shift goes by quickly thinking about that winning smile and the way he'd touched your fingers while he handed you a stack of bills... not to mention those soft brown eyes

The third is... intense, for 8am. He rolls on the balls of his feet, stares at you harder than the masked one. He offers to buy you a hot chocolate at the coffee shop next door and grins like you made a joke when you decline

Their boss is fucking dreamy. Even you have to admit it, trying not to look up at his mustached, frankly porno-esque face. He's huge, as tall as the others but thick, with a little pudge around his belly. He trudges in with thick workboots and a stained t shirt, pays for 24k worth of material with a lazy smile on his face like it's nothing

You might ask head cash to move you to the garden center after all...

Charles whose dad smashed his cassette tape with a hammer learns to navigate the backpack cause, like, he needs to be useful, yeah?

and this way Charles has everything Edwin needs, and if Edwin gets sick of him he’ll just.. he doesn’t know what he’ll do.

but then Edwin gets the record player.

he suggests, tentatively, that Charles might play some of his “queen” if he liked. after all, if they are to haunt potential realtors away from their new office, they may as well entertain themselves.

so they take turns, switching out; edwin likes opera. he shows Charles how to waltz, chiding Charles to stop looking at his feet til they’re gliding, whirling around like they’re in the movies. Edwin’s smile is small and pleased and lovely. (Charles attempt to get Edwin to headbang along to queen results in a sort of awkward rhythmic nodding. Charles loves him so much he could die again.)

And, like. Edwin doesn’t like clutter. he doesn’t bother with the random tidbits ghosts give them for solving cases.

until now, apparently.

now he comes back from trading at the goblin market with little useless things—a cursed rubix cube, records from bands Charles mentioned years ago.

Charles is so busy trying to subtly read his book on Edwardian courting rituals (disguised by Nikos discreet manga covers) that he doesn’t realize what Edwin’s set down in front of him. he stares at Edwin’s spiky handwriting, the tidy numbered list.

“I thought, perhaps, that we might—start a new tradition.”

Charles blinks, eyes stinging. “Mate, did you.. make me a mixtape?”

“Crystal assisted me, and while she was absolutely insuffer—“ Edwin staggers, catching him with a surprised little noise.

“I love you so much,” Charles says, muffled into his throat. “You’re my favorite person. I love you so much it hurts, sometimes.”

“Yes,” Edwin says softly, hands curling around his waist. He takes Charles weight like it’s nothing. “I believe I know the feeling.”
