Eric never left to Africa, and Kelso is in Chicago with Brooke, but is still around. Donna sticks to her feminist values like in the early seasons and is a better friend to Jackie. Jackie is close to the Forman's as well, and her relationship with her father will be prominent and better here as well. Overall positive with some angst.

Snow and The Flame

For the @coexchange, I gifted @carryonincorrectquotes a playlist with the promise of a fic outline, and I am finally delivering that!

Here is the playlist, and the outline is underneath the cut. I decided to preface this with an explanation about what I did, so bear with me for a moment.

The plan was to give them a playlist with a detailed fic outline, but it turns out that my outlines are incomprehensible unless you’re me (and sometimes even if you’re me) so this became more like a speed run through the fic where I half-rambled, half-narrated it along with explanations about which songs fit where.

There are a ton of songs on here because I thought it would be a good idea to pick songs and then figure out what the fic was going to be about, so each song inspired a different moment, and I had to figure out a way to work them all in. (I actually ended up limiting myself to 25 songs so that this wouldn’t end up being too long.)

I decided to break the outline into sections based off of the songs that each part goes with, and there are a few scenes that I went ahead and wrote, which are shared in italics to try to separate it from the rest. I also included some commentary on why some of the songs were chosen.

Basically, this post got really long but hopefully it isn’t too long or confusing, and I hope you all like it!!

(Also, I know that this isn’t technically a full fic, but since it’s over 6k words, I decided to go ahead and post it on ao3 to make it a little easier to peruse.)

Fic Summary: Simon is a superhero, a part of a group of heroes who protect the city. Baz’s family is a crime family, and they don’t care who they hurt. Baz wants a way out of this life, to get out from under his father’s thumb so that he can make his own choices

Some Background/backstory/world building: 

Some people are born with powers, but they don't come into those powers until they are around 11 years old. When they do get those powers, they receive a token of some sort that symbolizes their power and basically gives them their power. If that token is destroyed, they will lose their powers. Luckily, there are only a few ways to destroy them.

Baz was a child spy who fell in love with the boy he was meant to be targeting, but Simon never even had a clue that he was being watched. Baz was very good at what he did, and while he was growing up with Simon. Simon was all alone, an orphaned child with magickal powers who could make it snow on a dry, summer day and bring cold into places where it was meant to be warm. Baz saw him grow up an outcast, all alone, before becoming a hero as he got older, and he couldn’t help but fall deeply, hopelessly in love.

Murder Song

Alright, so the fic starts out with a scene that was inspired by the song Murder song (5, 4, 3, 2, 1) by AURORA. This is one of the scenes that I went ahead and wrote, and yes, it is very angsty, but the entire fic is not like this.

Baz

“You don’t have to do this. You can make a different choice. Killing me isn’t the only option.”

“No, but it is the fun one.” His grin is dark and menacing, and I want to turn and run. But run where? My whole world is right here, his hand to my heart, ready to fill it with ice.

Simon finally caught me, and I am so tired of fighting that I’m ready to just give up.

He removes his hand from my chest, and for a moment, I believe that he has changed his mind about killing me, but then he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gun, pointing it at my head.

This is it. This is the end.

5...

He’s holding a gun to my head, and he starts to count down. He’s giving me a literal countdown to the moment that he’s going to pull the trigger and end my life. I should be fighting. I should be doing everything in my power to stop him, but all of the fight has gone out of me. I can’t do this anymore. I’m done.

I have no reason to fight anyway.  This is what I deserve. I have hurt too many people during my time on this earth to be given a kinder death. This is already too kind of one.

I deserve to be tortured to within an inch of my life and then be tortured again. I do not deserve a seemingly painless death.

4...

Simon is doing me a service here actually. He could be using his powers to choke all of the life and heat and from my body, slowly draining me of everything that I am, but instead, he’s holding a gun to my head, tears streaming down his face as he stares down at me where I kneel on the ground.

He’s doing it for mercy. He is putting an end to everything that I have suffered for far too long now. He is doing exactly what I want him to.

Still, as I look up at the man that I have loved for so long, my heart shatters in my chest, piercing my body with a spiking pain.

3...

I know that he doesn’t want to hurt me. He’s doing this for me. He’s taking my pain away. He’s drawing it from my body to his with the simple press of a trigger.

Tears burn my eyes, but they aren’t tears of sadness. They’re tears of relief. My pain will be gone in a mere two seconds. It is finally my time to let go, to let the weight of everything wash away as the blanket of death covers me and soothes me into a deep sleep.

2…

The sound of this number brings a facsimile of a smile to my face. I am so close to letting go of all of my pain. I am almost free. Soon, I will feel no more pain. I won’t feel anything anymore, but nothing has got to be better than this vice grip around my chest, suffocating me daily but never taking enough of me to kill me.

I just want to be free. I just want to be able to breathe.

I don’t want to worry about disappointing my family or anyone else.

1...

I have to close my eyes as he gets to 1. I can’t look at him as he does this.

With the second that I have left, I imagine him holding my lifeless body in his arms and crying over my death. The one he delivered but didn’t cause. I imagine for just a moment him caring for me the way that I always hoped he would. I imagine him loving me and mourning the loss of a love he never got to have.

Then, the gun goes off, and I’m gone.

I jerk up in bed with a gasping breath, and it takes me a moment to understand what happened.

It was all just a dream, and I’m not sure whether I should be relieved or disappointed. I was so close.

But also in that last moment, as the gun went off, I wondered what would have happened if I had made a different choice. What if I had gone to Simon before it was too late?

I know that he would never help me, but I could turn myself in. At least if I’m locked away, my family can’t force me to hurt anyone anymore. I will be free from them, but I won’t be dead.

I laugh at myself.

Of course I won’t be free. I will never be free from them. They will always come for me. Break me out or kill me for betraying them.

There is no way out of this for me.

When Baz wakes up and realizes that it was all a dream, he also realizes that he doesn’t want death to be the answer. If it has to be, it will be a last-ditch option, but he wants to try something else. He thinks Simon could help him. Instead of finding Simon and asking him to kill him, he could ask him for help.

He is deciding to take back his life, making a new life for himself and fighting for a better future, which is where Fight Song comes in. Baz has this whole, long moment where he questions whether any of this is a good idea before he decides that it has to be better than the alternative, which would be his family killing him.

He is going against his family in order to chase after a chance at a better future, one where he gets to live and doesn’t have to hurt people anymore. It won’t be an easy journey, but he is willing to try. He wants his life to be different, and this is where it begins.

 Worlds Collide – Louden Swain

Asking Simon for help might be the hardest thing that Baz has ever done, but he does it. It isn’t all that hard finding the gang of superheroes running around town trying to save the day (because they never take a day off, do they? Baz thinks with mild disgust, wondering what that must be like, trying to save everyone when there will always be evil in the world), and it’s even easier to get Simon alone. All he has to do is hide in the shadows and then yank him into an alleyway.

Of course, Simon thinks it’s some kind of trap at first. (What else is he supposed to think when someone pulls him into a dark alley? Especially when said person is his archnemesis.)

Why would Baz want to suddenly side with the heroes? That’s just it; he wouldn’t. So, this absolutely has to be a trap, and Simon is not going to fall into it. He is prepared for a fight, but that isn’t what Baz wants. That’s quite the opposite of what he is looking for here.

Baz realizes that he only has a short amount of time to convince Simon that he’s telling the truth before someone comes looking for him.

He gets an idea and slips the chain that he’s worn for as long as he can remember from around his neck. It’s the token/source of his power. Simon could easily destroy it, therefore taking away Baz’s power, but Baz trusts him. (Simon is the good guy after all.) He’s still worried, though, because the last person you should give your power token to is your rival, whose one goal in life is to stop you at any cost.

If you’re going to give your token to anyone, it should be the person you love, which Baz supposes Simon fits that bill, too. Baz hates himself for it, but he fell in love with the one person his family has been training him to kill for pretty much his entire life.

Baz has a sick feeling in his stomach as he watches Simon slip the chain around his neck. It clanks against Simon’s own power token, which has been woven into his suit and sits just over his chest. Baz thinks that that’s a rather foolish place to wear it, out in the open where any criminal could easily access it while battling him, because if someone had the right weapon (which Baz’s family does, coincidentally), they could easily hit Simon there and take his powers away from him.

Simon sees Baz eye the two tokens, and he worries for a moment that he might change his mind and make a grab for the both of them, but then his eyes find Simon’s face again.

They then agree to stop fighting each other, and they make an uneasy truce with Baz swearing that he won’t try to hurt Simon – or anyone else – so long as they are working together, and they decide to meet up at a diner in town the next day to talk.

Baz is antsy the entire time, constantly looking over his shoulder, afraid that he might have been followed. Meeting in such a public place probably wasn’t a good idea, but Simon didn’t really give him much of a choice on venues.

They start to talk, and it’s weird how easily they slip into the moment together, their two very different worlds colliding.

It’s almost like in another world, they might have gotten along.

They spend most of their time with Baz explaining to Simon why he wants to leave his family and promising half a dozen more times that he doesn’t plan to turn on him.

When they leave, Simon says that they should meet up again in a few days, so they do, and they continue meeting for a couple of weeks, but eventually, Baz says that they can’t keep meeting up in public like this. Someone from his family might spot them together, and he’ll be in trouble. Or Simon will. Or both. Either way, they cannot be spotted together.

He suggests that they meet up at Simon’s place since Baz is staying with his family, but of course, Simon says absolutely not. He still doesn’t fully trust Baz yet.

Fortunately, Simon knows a place they can go where no one in Baz’s posh family would ever deign to step foot in.

 A Place For Us – Fitz and the Tantrums & Dancing’s Not a Crime – P!ATD

So, there’s some seedy, underground club, and why Simon knows about it, I have no idea. They go there to talk, and for whatever reason, one of them (probably Baz) decides that they would be less likely to be overheard if they went out on the dancefloor and danced together.

Simon is hesitant at first, but Baz turns on that bit of wicked charm and holds his hand out to him, an obvious challenge.

“Come on. Dancing’s not a crime, and it’s not like I’m going to hurt you in front of all these people. Plus, I told you that I wouldn’t.”

“I didn’t realize that this truce included dancing.”

“It does when you don’t want to stand out. You won’t touch any kind of drink, and you won’t dance. You stick out like a sore thumb, and sooner or later someone is going to notice you – and not in a good way.”

Simon chews on his lips as he thinks about it. Finally, he sighs and carefully places his hand in Baz’s, whose expression turns even more wicked, edging towards a smirk, but Simon doesn’t have too much time to think about it before he’s being pulled towards the dancefloor.

Simon tries to keep up a conversation as they dance, but it doesn’t go all that well. The music is too loud, there are too many bodies pressing in around them, Baz doesn’t actually seem all that interested in talking. 

Finally, Simon gives in and just dances with Baz, giving into the music and enjoying himself without any worries for the first time since he can remember. It ends up being really nice to dance together.

 Quarter Past Midnight - Bastille & Criminal - Britney Spears & Accidentally In Love - Counting Crows & First Time He Kissed a Boy - Kadie Elder & Weak - AJR

The club closes at midnight. Neither of them wants to part (even though they don’t actually say that aloud) so they just walk around, weaving around abandoned buildings until they reach the empty streets of downtown. At some point they start running, and they’re laughing and having fun, just enjoying themselves.

After a while, they start to slow, and Baz pulls Simon into another alley, the way he did a couple of weeks ago.

The last time this happened, Simon wondered what he was supposed to expect when he gets pulled into a dark alley by his rival, but this time, he knows exactly what he wants to happen, and it is him who pushes Baz into the wall this time.

But he stops there, with a few mere inches between them, and Simon is silently frustrated.

They stare at each other for a long time before Simon finally kisses Baz.

Then, Simon has a realization about his feelings, which is what the next three songs are about. (and then Weak is a song thrown in to describe how Baz is probably feeling and an allusion to that line in the book when he says he’s weak.) Simon was absolutely not supposed to fall in love with a criminal. He wonders how long he’s felt this way and if he somehow fell deeply for him over the past couple of weeks.

There are a lot of songs for this short scene, but I feel like there is a lot going on with Simon internally. He’s in love and freaking out and kissing a boy for the first time (a very criminal-like boy) and there are so many thoughts circling through his mind that he can’t quite grab onto any particular one to think through it, so he ends up pushing all of the thoughts away and just enjoying kissing Baz.

And then here’s a little moment that I wrote:

Baz

It feels like we’re running, but running from what? Everything? Or nothing? Maybe we just feel free. I do, at least. This is the freest that I have felt in a long time. The most carefree, too.

I’m laughing as we run down street after street, under broken streetlamp after broken streetlamp. I don’t know where we’re going or why we’re running, and I’m too afraid to ask because I don’t want to break the moment.

I don’t want to give Simon a reminder of who I am or why he doesn’t like me, so I just run down the empty streets with him, watching his smile and bouncing curls, pretending for a moment like my life is different.

Like I wasn’t raised to be a villain and like my father isn’t one of the most wanted criminals around. For now, I get to pretend like I grew up normal, with no powers and no bizarre family expectations. I can pretend, just for a little while, that I’m just a guy, not a villain, not a monster.

 Human - Christina Perri

A day or two after the kiss with Simon, Baz decides that it’s time to tell his family about his choice to leave. He knows that his father will not take it well, so he’s relieved when it’s just Daphne at home.

He explains to her his plan to leave all of this criminal business behind, and he says that she should leave it behind as well. She seems open to the idea, but she also seems afraid. Baz is sure that she had no idea what she was marrying into when she met Malcolm and agreed to be his partner, and she probably feels just as trapped as he does.

Baz wants her to stand beside him, but she won’t – she has the kids to worry about and her own life. Baz gets it, but he wishes that there was another way.

He wants his half-siblings to know that there is a choice – they don’t have to be evil. It might be too late for Mordelia – they’re already turning her into a child soldier, the same way they did to him when he was younger – but he can at least try to help the other three kids. He doesn’t want them to end up the way he did, trapped with no way out.

He won’t force Daphne to do something that she is uncomfortable with, so he leaves for now, planning to figure out a way to get them out. He wants them all to have a choice.

Baz goes to talk to Fiona next, and he’s surprised to find his father there.

Apparently, the two of them have a task for him. They’re always giving Baz “tasks”. A bank to rob, a restaurant to terrorize, but the one they give him this time is the one that he has been dreading for years.

They tell him that it is time for him to find the Snow Prince and put an end to him. 

Baz wants to laugh, but he also wants to be sick. If only they knew that Baz had been with him just the other night, had the perfect opportunity to kill him, but he let himself be kissed and held and loved instead. Even though he knew that it might turn out to all be a mistake. Even if Simon probably woke up the next morning with a heart full of regret, wishing that he could take back everything that he said and everything he did that night.

Even if Simon does regret that night, Baz will never be able to kill him.

Still, he knows he won’t be able to change their minds, so he agrees, knowing full well that he won’t go through with it. 

At this point, he should just try running away. Maybe Simon will go with him. That way, Baz might be able to keep him away from his family. Just because Baz leaves, doesn’t mean that his family will suddenly stop going after Simon. They will be after the both of them, and if they’re together, maybe Baz will be able to protect Simon, or put himself between Simon and his family when it is time for them to battle.

At the end of all of this, Baz knows he won’t survive, but maybe, just maybe, he can keep Simon safe.

The song fits in with Baz’s internal thoughts/angst. He’s torn between that old desire to please his family and the new desire for a better life. He wishes he could somehow do both, but he’s only human and can only do so much.

 The Greatest - Sia

Baz leaves immediately to go warn Simon about what his family has planned and to ask him to run away with him, but what he doesn’t know is that it was a set-up. His father and aunt followed him there, and they’re prepared for a fight.

Baz

“So, your cousin was right,” my father says. “He said he saw you leaving some seedy club the other night with the Snow Prince, but I told him he must be mistaken.”

“Dev,” I hiss. Simon was wrong.

There is one person in my family who doesn’t care about their reputation, so of course he would know about that place. I bet he was going there to meet up with Niall. Did he tell our family that? Probably not, because he knows what they do to people who aren’t like us, who don’t have our kinds of power, who are powerless. They don’t want anyone marrying or dating or sleeping their way into our family. They would likely kill him, or at least make him “mysteriously disappear”.

 “I didn’t want to believe him, but here’s the proof. My own son, a betrayer of his family.”

Fiona sneers but stays silent.

I can’t believe that I led them here to Simon. I can’t believe that I put him in danger when all I wanted was to keep him safe.

I look around, trying to find a way out, a way to get Simon out of danger.

There aren’t a lot of ways out of here, and running won’t fix this, but it’s the only option right now.

“Run,” I shout, grabbing Simon’s hand and pulling him after me.

We run out of his apartment and disappear into the night, hand in hand.

This won’t be the end of my father and aunt coming after us. There will be a battle, very soon, and we have to be prepared.

 Crazy Youngsters - Ester Dean, Into the Storm - BANNERS, Someone to You - BANNERS

Simon and Baz join with Penny and the other superheroes and begin planning what they’re going to do. A battle is coming, and unless they all work together, there is no chance of them winning.

Baz tries to go the self-sacrificial route and offers to just turn himself in so that none of them will have to fight, but they aren’t having it. They are all too focused on saving others for their own good. Baz thinks that they would all benefit from finding some sense of self-preservation.

They don’t seem to need Baz’s help. They work like a well-oiled machine as they make a battle plan, and Baz is on the outside of that. He begins to feel like he’s getting in the way, so he starts to walk around, taking in their little home base.

Simon follows him not long after, and this is the first time that they have really gotten a chance to talk since the other night, since they kissed.

Baz once again offers him an out, telling him that he’ll be safer if he isn’t trying to fight Baz’s battles for him. Simon won’t hear any of it, though. He’s going to fight, and Baz can’t stop him.

Then, they have a soft moment. They are fighting for each other, to keep each other safe. Neither of them wants to see the other get hurt, and they would do anything to protect each other.

Simon and Baz get their own BANNERS songs to go with how they’re feeling in this section.

Into the Storm is for Simon because he’s telling Baz that he would do anything, weather any kind of storm, for him. He would do anything for him. If his world is falling apart (which it is) he will be there, and he will follow him into the storm. (Just listen to the words and it gives you what Simon is trying to say to him.)

And then, Someone to You is Baz’s song. He just wants to mean something to someone, especially if that someone is Simon. He wants to be more than a weapon, wants his life to mean more than that. He doesn’t want to die, and he doesn’t want his life to be meaningless. He believes that Simon could lead him to a better life, one where his life will mean something.

 Fight Song - Rachel Platten (a repeat because Baz is once again choosing to fight), I Want to Break Free - Queen, Whatever It Takes - Imagine Dragons, Believer - Imagine Dragons, Titanium - David Guetta ft. Sia (cover by Madilyn Bailey), Elastic Heart - Sia, Angel with a Shotgun - The Cab,

[a/n: my brain kept saying “fight scene, fight scene” even though I don’t think I have ever written a fight scene before, which is why this section is a bit lacking in content, and then all of these songs said that they wanted to be included, so that’s why there are so many for this small section. (If you want to skip over these songs, I won’t blame you, but I feel it’s important to at least listen to Angel with a Shotgun before moving on because it sort of sets up the feeling for the next part.)]

They all meet somewhere for the big fight, and at first, it seems like a pretty evenly matched fight, but bit by bit, Baz’s family starts to win. They’re stronger and better trained. They have been fighting their entire lives and don’t care about who gets hurt.

Baz can see that they’re losing, and he tries to figure out a way for them to win or to get everyone out of here safely.

And then we come to the turning point of the fight…

 How to Save a Life - The Fray (Okay, so, I put on a random Spotify playlist to try to get myself to focus on this outline, and when this song played, I knew that it was exactly what I needed for this scene. Otherwise, I was just going to leave this part song-less which would have been rather unfortunate because it really needed something.)

And I actually wrote this entire scene:

 Baz

We’re losing.

I know it was a long shot to think that a ragtag team of heroes would be able to fight my criminal family and win, but I wanted to believe that we could do it.

Simon is facing off against my aunt, and there is a serious burn on one of his arms. I want to run to him, to stand between him and my aunt - between him and any kind of harm - but I am just barely making it through this battle against my father.

You would think that the plants that he keeps growing to impede me would be useless against my flames, but there is a vine of thorns wrapped around my arm, constricting tighter and tighter, restricting any blood flow. It’s unrooted but still growing.

My arm is beginning to lose feeling, and between the pain from that and the pain from the poison one of his earlier plants hit me with, I can barely control the flames that I’m shooting out at him with my free hand.

The thorny vines reach my hand, sinking a particularly large one into the palm, and I have to grit my teeth to keep in an anguished cry. I will fight to the very last moment. I will not give up or give in.

My father will have to kill me if he wants to stop fighting me.

And it looks like he plans to do just that.

He calls up more vines from the ground to start wrapping around my legs and pulling them together so that I am unable to move. I reach down, calling a flame into my hand, and attempt to burn the vines away, but my power is waning and the small flame that I just manage to draw is not enough.

I’m too weak. I’m going to lose this.

“Give it up, son,” my father says, stepping closer to me.

“Never,” I hiss, and with one last burst of power, I shoot a stream of fire at him.

His sleeve catches fire, but he barely even winces before a heavy rain falls down upon him, just long enough to put out the fire. I can’t see my cousin, but I know that he must be nearby, fighting someone whilst also combating my other move for my father.

The vines have reached my hips now. I can’t move, and I don’t have enough energy to use my power.

With a wicked grin, my father steps forward and reaches out his hand, preparing to press it to my chest and send out his signature venomous plant to take hold and poison me, a slow, painful death. I bare my teeth at him, yanking at the vines that are creeping up my body and completely immobilizing me.

His hand has just about reached my chest when someone throws themself in front of me, obstructing his attack.

“Stop!” My step-mom shouts, and her voice rings out across the battlefield, cutting through the flames and wild wind. Through the snowfall and earth shakes that I had grown used to by this point.

Everyone stops where they are and turns to stare at her.

She wasn’t here before. Her powers are healing and protective in nature. I was sure that she was with the younger children, keeping them away from the battle to end all battles. But here she is now: standing between her husband and stepson.

“Stop fighting,” she says, her words directed at my father.

“Move out of the way. This does not concern you.”

“It absolutely does concern me. If you mean to kill my son, then it is my responsibility to stop you.”

Tears spring to my eyes, and I am uncertain whether it’s from the pain or from her words. She has never called me her son before. I always thought that she saw me as the child she had to put up with and never wanted. I thought she cared for her own children more than she ever would with me.

I was wrong, though, because she is right here, putting herself in harm’s way to protect me.

“If you plan to hurt him, you will have to go through me,” she says, taking up a protective stance in front of me, and I think she means it. She would sacrifice herself to protect me, the same way that I was ready to do for Simon a moment ago.

I feel something wet drip down my face, and I am unsure whether it is blood or tears. I’m starting to feel woozy now. It wouldn’t take much more at this point to end me. It would almost be a kindness.

And now, we have come full-circle. Would it be better to suffer through the pain of my family’s hatred and murderous attacks or to just die now and have it all be over?

I don’t care which one seems better, though.

I only care about what I want. And what I want is a future. A future with Simon and a future away from all of this violence. Which is why I came here to fight today. I came to fight for a future, and now Daphne is helping me fight for that future as well.

“Tell everyone to stand down,” she says. “We shouldn’t be fighting our own family. He is your son for merlin’s sake. That should mean something to you.”

“He stopped being my son the moment he decided to hang out with heroes.”

Even though I knew this would be the case, it hurts to hear him actually say it. In this moment, he is announcing to me and to everyone else that I no longer have a home, that I no longer have a family. I am completely alone.

I glance behind me and am reminded that I am not actually completely alone. Simon and the others may not be related to me by blood, and I may not have known them all for long, but in standing beside me in all of this, they have become my second family. They care more for my safety than my real family does at least.

I am several inches taller than Daphne, so I have a clear view of my father’s expression. He is obviously torn, unsure whether to continue trying to kill me, killing his wife in the process, or let me go, let the family traitor run free.

For a moment, I think that he might actually kill Daphne. There is murder in his eyes, and no one can stop him. But then his stance relaxes and he lowers his hand before signaling to the others to retreat.

The three of us continue to stand there, at the center of a burning battlefield until they have all disappeared back into the woods.

“Go,” Daphne commands, and Malcolm does, giving me one last look before turning away.

Daphne waits until he has disappeared into the trees and still a moment longer before she turns to me. 

She looks me up and down, watching as the vines slowly release me. I can’t tell if that helps or worsens the pain, but at least I’m safe for now.

It’s hard to meet Daphne’s eyes because when I do, I can see her pain written so clearly there. She is still torn, but she made a choice today, one that gives me hope.

“I’m sorry, but I think you have to leave,” she says quietly. “I bought you some time, but I don’t think he’s going to give up forever.”

I nod in understanding. I knew from the beginning that this is how it would end, me being shunned from my family. At least maybe I will have the chance at finally being free of them. 

I am just about to turn away from her and join the others, but I hesitate before stepping forward and wrapping my arms around her in a tight hug. She hugs me back, and I can feel her power washing over me like a warm blanket.

She’s healing all of my wounds. Wiping away the already-forming bruises and closing up the cuts and puncture wounds from the thorns. She wipes away all of the pain, all of it except the ache in my chest.

I whisper a hoarse thank you that isn’t possibly enough, but it’s all that I have. She risked her life to save me, and I will never be able to repay her.

When we pull away, her eyes are wet, but she wears a small smile.

“I’m happy that you’re safe. I love you.”

“I love you, too, mom.” 

I’ve never called her that before. I thought it might be crossing a line, but now I can see that she was there for me all along, even during those times when I thought I was alone. She mothered a child she didn’t have to, a child who was not her own, a child who should have been more grateful.

I feel a wetness stream down my face, and this time, I know for sure that it’s tears.

Today, I gained a future, but I lost my family.

I will miss them, but I know that this is the only choice I have if I want to get through this alive, so with tears in my eyes, I turn to join the others, crossing over to where Simon is and taking his hand.

I don’t turn to watch Daphne leave. It would be too much right now, and I’m not sure that I wouldn’t go running after her.

I will come back someday. I will get Daphne and my siblings out of here, but for now, I am running. I am running to a place where I will hopefully be able to grow stronger and be able to fight my family and win. I may never be able to change the minds of my father and aunt, but I can try to protect the rest of my family.

For now, though, it is time for me to go.

That may be the end of the fighting, but it is not the end of the story yet, nor even the end of their trouble because just as the heroes join together, looking over each other’s injuries, there is the sound of an explosion.

Baz spins around just in time to watch the edge of the trees go up in flames, a fire burning that could threaten to take out the entire patch of woods.

[a/n: I have no idea why the fight takes place here, except that I wanted the fic to end with them standing on a cliff, looking out over the town, with a fire burning behind the, but then the fire gets put out immediately so…]

He has no doubt that it was his aunt’s doing. She warned him after she and Malcolm caught him with Simon that this is how things would end: in flames. (“One day everything will burn, and your friends will turn on you, thinking it was you. Where will you be then? All alone in a world that hunts you.”)

This is her parting gift, a glimpse at the future that she sees for him.

Baz grimaces at it. His aunt knew that he would not be able to put it out himself, and it was her last opportunity to show his new allies that he is of no use to them. It isn’t until this moment that Baz sees the absolute truth of it. Maybe he should just go now, leave them all before anyone can get hurt because of him.

But then Simon squeezes his hand and smiles at him as he says, “It’s alright. I’ve got this. We’re a team now, remember?”

Maybe this won’t be so bad after all. They may be opposites in some respects, but that just makes them stronger together, playing off of each other’s strengths to fight whatever is thrown their way.

As Simon puts out the fire, Baz allows himself to feel a bit of relief and even some hope. Maybe there’s a chance for them after all. Yes, they’ll have to start all over, but at least he won’t be constantly worried about being killed. 

Standing there triumphant and with Simon standing beside them, Baz can’t help but smile a bit.

He feels like he’s on top of the world. But also like he could reach over and hold the world in my arms.

He finally has everything that he has ever wanted when he never thought he could ever be this happy, never that he could have anything that he wanted.

Baz is so glad that he was wrong. He’s free now, and they can go anywhere. He wonders if Simon has ever traveled before…

This app makes life SO much easier when you want to eat out but need to adhere to a gluten free diet. You can enter an address or use your current location and find reviews and menus of nearby restaurants with gluten free options.

2. Save Money. 

Ibotta is a money-saving app that lets you submit photographs of your receipts and get a small amount of cash back on certain products. Tons of stores participate in Ibotta, ranging from Walmart to Home Depot to Safeway, so you can get money back on more than just groceries. The cash-back products also change monthly, and I often see cash-back deals on gluten free brands like Bob's Red Mill and Enjoy Life Foods. 5. Get a BS-Free Perspective on Celiac Life.

Gluten Dude and all of his posts always say it like it is, whether he's calling out someone for harming the celiac community or offering advice to one of his many emailers.

6. Learn More About Celiac Disease and Eating Gluten Free.

MI Gluten Free Gal is another one of my favorite gluten free bloggers because not only does she share delicious recipes, but she also regularly shares graphics and posts on important topics for the celiac community, such as how to get a proper celiac disease diagnosis.

7. Cook Gluten Free Like a Pro.

There are plenty of amazing gluten free bloggers sharing equally amazing gluten free recipes, but a few of my favorite resources include:

8. Make New Friends

Spokin is another phone app allows you to look for gluten free (and allergy friendly) restaurants nearby, but it also gives users access to product reviews, allergy friendly travel guides and educational articles. Spokin is a social networking app to some extent, too, as you can follow other people after you’ve set up your own account

9. Find Back-To-School Tips.

Are you the parent of a child with celiac disease or do you have celiac disease and you're going to school? Then check out this extensive list of back-to-school resources from the National Celiac Association. And if you're a college student with celiac disease (or you're about to head to college), I highly recommend my thorough post about being gluten free in college!

10. Grocery Shop Like a Master.

One of the most popular gluten free apps on iTunes is The Gluten Free Scanner, which lets you scan a product’s barcode and receive a quick report on whether it’s gluten free or not.

I personally prefer scanning product labels myself because I know technology - just like people - can make mistakes. As a result, I’d encourage you to read a product’s ingredient labels yourself even if The Gluten Free Scanner says the product is gluten free. However, especially if you’re newly diagnosed and still wondering, "What is gluten anyway?", this free scanner could make shopping for gluten free products a lot quicker, easier and less stressful.

11. Stay Up-To-Date.

Beyond Celiac is another awesome celiac disease organization that provides plenty of gluten free recipes, tips on living with celiac disease and news updates.

12. Access Gluten Free Food in a Time of Need.

The Food Equality Initiative is a new organization to me, but I love their mission of making gluten free food (and food free from other allergens) more accessible to everyone. They also provide access to a gluten free food pantry to those in need.

13. Connect with Fellow Gluten Free Teens.

Generation GF is an AMAZING program that provides a variety of resources to gluten free kids and teens, including educational resources, local support groups and virtual chats that allow gluten free teens to connect even if they don't live in the same area.

The Gluten Free Intolerance Group is also who hosts the GF Teen Summit!

14. Get Safety Alerts.

The Gluten-Free Certification Organization (GFCO) provide independent verification of gluten free products, and their symbol indicates that a product meets the strictest of gluten free standards. But I also love that they regularly release safety alerts on gluten free products.

15. Meet Up with Other Gluten Free Folks.

Search for the local gluten-free community in your area, or start a group of your own, on Meetup.com.

16. Learn about Research on a Cure for Celiac Disease.

The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center is on a mission to find a cure for celiac disease, and you can learn more about their work here.

17. Avoid the Top 10 Allergens.

Allergy Eats is another phone app that is very similar to Find Me Gluten Free except you can search for restaurants free of any of the top 10 allergens instead of just gluten. People can leave ratings and reviews, which, at least in my experience, makes eating out gluten free or allergy friendly a lot easier (and less scary) since you don't feel like you're making as "blind" of a restaurant choice.

18. Read Honest, Helpful Advice.

The information you can find on Reddit's gluten free channel - /r/GlutenFree - isn't always accurate or appropriate for all readers. However, you can find plenty of honest, helpful advice.

19. Download Gluten Free Restaurant Cards.

Make traveling a little easier with gluten free restaurant cards you can download in different languages.

20. Find the Best Gluten Free Products.

As regular readers know, I share gluten free product reviews pretty often on my blog and social media channels. But if you're looking for the best gluten free products to buy when you're just going gluten free, this post should definitely be on your reading list!

21. Kick Back with a Magazine.

Overall: We Hunt the Flame is a rich Arabia inspired fantasy with characters that you easily fall for (like the two of us with Altair lmao). Personally, we wouldn’t classify the romance as an insta-love, it’s more of an insta-annoyance and gradual build up to feelings. The story keeps you on your toes and Hafsah does an amazing job at tying in different plot points together. Also, it’s got that amazing unlikely group of friends trope :’) SO if you haven’t already, check out this book we highly recommend it! 

Spoiler-Full Discussion Below...

The Good: 

→ The Premise and Characters

Kae: So we start off with Zafira hunting in the Arz, a forest that is full of darkness. Once you go into the Arz, there is no coming out. But our girl Zafira is a baddie and she can travel the Arz without much trouble. She can always find her way out. She hunts in the Arz for her village because it is an icy, barren land and it is their main source of food. The thing is, Zafira is a woman so no one can ever find out she is the famed Hunter of the Arz, or she’ll probs get like, banished. But her two best friends, Yasmine and Deen, know her secret and keep it safe. Along with her sister and bedridden mother. Zafira has acquired this wonderful hunting skill from her father, who taught her everything she knew so she could fend for herself and well… Those skills came in hand because he got lost in the Arz one day, kind of went crazy, stumbled out, then tried to kill his family. So Zafira’s mother did what she had to do and killed him to save her daughters. She (Zafira’s mother) has been plagued by nightmares since. 

Geena: Kae outlined the premise of Zafira’s story really well! On the other hand we have Nasir, the crown prince of Arawiya and one of the most feared assassins across the caliphates. He’s also hated by literally everyone in his life… especially his dad. Nasir was raised (See: forced) into becoming the Sultan’s weapon, killing anyone that dared to oppose him. We find out that Nasir’s mom, the Sultana, died ~mysteriously~ when he was young and after that his dad went batshit crazy essentially. Nasir does everything as a means to get his dad’s love and approval (even though he likes to pretend that he’s just doing shit just because ‘i have no life so might as well kill’). Nasir ends up falling for some servant girl, who’s tongue the Sultan serves to him in a golden box. After that he is very angsty like, “I can’t love anyone :( ” Or so he thinks. 

Kae: Then we have our secondary characters. Like, the ‘friends we made a long the way’ characters who all def were trying to kill one another but it’s cool now ‘cause they love each other :) 

Geena: The magical artifact was the magic of friendship :’)

Kae: LMAO YES. So we have Kifah, she is from Pelusia and she is a badass legendary warrior who is fast as lightniiiing, WILL ABSOLUTELY kick your ass with a staff (she won’t hesitate, BITCH) and she’s also really pretty and tall and she brings her own snacks and seasoning. I can relate because I too, bring seasoning and snacks when I know they will be needed. Kifah is funny, sarcastic, and one of the few people that has a witty retort to Altair and his tomfoolery. She also has a thing for Altair. 

Altair, we love him! He’s a big buff boi with pretty eyes and a dazzling smile. He also makes a lot of dick jokes and is an absolute CHILD. But we love him for it and so does Kifah. They have the hots for each other.  My boi doesn’t have good aim and he killed his homie on accident but we’ll get to that later. He is the #1 general in Ghameq’s (Nasir’s father) army and is ordered to tag along with Nasir on this unintentional road to friendship. He is the sunshine in Nasir’s life and Nasir HATES IT BECAUSE HE’S AN EMO BOI. 

Geena: ALTAIR IS THE SUN TO NASIR’S MOON HONESTLY. ALSOO, we got our two best boys that unfortunately didn’t make it to the end :/ Deen, aka the boy that loved Zafira enough to go on an impossible quest with her and then die for her too. He’s Yasmine’s older brother and an absolute sweetheart who wears his emotions on his sleeve when around Zafira. In a way, he was Zafira’s first boyfriend who she didn’t love romantically. Deen proposes to her and she’s like *radio silence*. I DIED AT THAT KAE…. SHE WAS LIKE “NO COMMENT” 

Kae: RADIO SILENCE LMAOO SHE WAS. She pulled a, “okay but like the arz tho…”

Geena: But yea! Deen literally dies in the first few chapters because of Altair’s shit aim…. No one ever hand him another bow and arrow again plz. So like I’m thinking Hafsah made him super sweet the first few chapters just so we would be devastated when he died like 5 chapters later or something.

We also have our wise old Safin (essentially an immortal Elf but like cooler) Benyamin, who is centuries old and a book nerd (relatable). He and Kifah join Nasir, Altair, and Zafira later on in their quest, and he seems to know a lot more than he lets one. We learn that Benyamin is the living embodiment of that one meme “Baby jordans, never worn - for sale” bc of his baby that didn’t make it :/. He wants the whole crew to be like a little family so bad that he enforces the word “zumra” aka gang on them and overall he was sly but sweet nonetheless and he too…. Kicked the can… all for the zumra :’(  

→ The Ride or Die Relationships

Geena: One thing that Hafsah Faizal writes really well is the friendships between Zafira and the small crew that knows that she’s actually the Hunter that’s been keeping them fed for years. Zafira’s absolute best friend, Yasmine, supports Zafira in all her decisions EXCEPT for the decisions where Zafira parades as a man. Deen I suppose is the same as Yasmine, except he’s less snarky. It’s canon that Zafira would lay down her life for Yasmine, and not to sound like a weirdo but Zafira was wildly jealous when Yasmine got married to Misk... like “ugh now I have to share my bestie with a man??” only explanation is that Zafira is bi confirmed. Also, where we had Zafira ready to die for Yasmine, we also have Deen ready to die for Zafira (and he does...😭). IDK how Deen was hot, smart, sweet, and everything in between and he still died. Hafsah gave us the perfect man and was like “yeea FUCK that, the only love interest will be leech-scars sad boy.” ANYWAYS, The Zafira-Yasmine-Deen triangle is a whole “I would die for you” thing, whereas Yasmine is more of a “I would kill for you” and I think that’s beautiful :’) 

Kae: Alrighty, so we also have the relationship between Altair and Nasir. They aren’t as close as Zafira, Deen, and Yasmine. At all. But they kind of have this “if it were not for the laws of this land, I would kill you” thing between them and it’s hilarious. Nasir is constantly like, “I can and will kill you, you bastard brute of a man” and Altair is like “do it bitch, I dare you” and Nasir tears up and stomps away like a brat. But as this journey continues, Nasir gets a newfound respect for Altair because he soon learns Altair isn’t a dumb brute at all and is actually pretty bright. Did we mention they’re brothers? Yeah, that’s a thing. But Nasir doesn’t learn this until the end of the story. Did Altair know the whole time? Yes. Did he swear to their mother to protect him? That as heavily implied so also yes. SO now Nasir is like, “oh noooo, I wanted to kill my brother and was also ORDERED BY MY BITCHASS DADDY TO KILL HIM” then boom goes the dynamite and Nasir finds that he can be a good boi. ANYWAYS WE LOVE ALTAIR IN THIS HOUSE. 

Geena: OKAY SINCE KAE MENTIONED IT, AND THE WHOLE ALTAIR-NASIR THING. See since I have poor reading comprehension, I didn’t realize that Altair had promised to protect Nasir. SO THIS BRINGS ABOUT THE QUESTION of the servant girl, Kulsum, that Nasir realizes is working for Altair. The same girl that appeared around the time Nasir’s mom “died”, so does that mean Altair had sent her to help console his brother 👀 Does Altair feel partly responsible for the Sultan tearing out Kulsum’s tongue?? If so… both Altair and Nasir need mad therapy 

The Bad:   

→ The Sea Monster

Kae: So, this isn’t inherently bad and we honestly have nothing bad to say about the book, let’s get that straight. But we wanted to mention it because it was eh. So we have a sea monster scene when Altair and Nasir are on their way to the island. It’s from an old folktale they’d heard growing up, that sea monsters lurked in the sea. They end up running into a sea monster and it is blind and attacking their ship. It is following them by sound so they eventually realize they need to shut the hell up. But then there is our wonderful golden buff boy, Altair. He starts singing, taunting the sea monster and Nasir is like “BOY IF U DONT-” but then his singing kills it. Apparently, the monster hates music and song? So there’s that. It as a very quick scene and I kind of wish I was longer and more dangerous. I wanted some bloodshed! Maybe a sunken ship! But it was still okay. 

Geena: Kae said everything that had to be said about that scene. And I agree, it was cool to have a monster from the author’s folklore, but at the same time, it didn’t really add much to the story other than the fact that Altair knows how to sing (whether he can sing well is a different story).

The Ugly...Crying:

→ The Lion and The Sultan

Geena: This is going to be very cliche but the ugliest thing in this book was the Sultan, our main villain, who is later revealed to be controlled by the Lion aka some ancient ifrit-safin hybrid dude that was the cause of all of Arawiya’s problems. First off, we find out near the end that the Sultan is possessed by the Lion because Nasir’s mom had a big swig of dumbass juice and gave the Sultan a pendant from the place where the Lion was imprisoned. So, following his mother’s “Death” Nasir watches the Sultan’s descent into a sort of madness and suffers under his dad’s abuse. The Lion is also Nasir’s Mom’s Ex so you can imagine what kind of shitshow that was. The Lion is also coincidentally Altair’s dad, and I’m guessing the Lion was like “fuck them kids” because he wanted Nasir to murder Altair... his only son :/ ANYWAYS, the Lion is a terrible dad 0/10 should ever have kids. 

ALSOOO THIS BITCH WAS OUT HERE CONTROLLING ZAFIRA HALF HER LIFE??? And was instrumental in her dad’s death, since he’s the embodiment of dark magic -- which makes up the Arz (evil forest) -- we learn that the Lion coaxed Zafia’s dad into entering the forest and essentially turning him mad, which lead to her mom killing him. AND IN A WAY, he can control Zafira?? Or at least get into her head.

Kae: Geena said everything perfectly. The Lion is a skank bitch and we HATE HIM. But if we hate him, that means he was written really well so HELL YEAH HAFSAH. Now to the Sultan.  The Sultan, like Geena said, is possessed by the Lion. And upon learning that in the book, I kind of felt bad for him and Nasir. Nasir remembers when his father was kind and loved him. He has watched the decline of the Sultan and this drastic change from kind to 100% evil as fuuuck. The Sultan has no control over this and Nasir just wants to please his father to get that love back from him. He sees small flashes of the man the Sultan used to be, but they are very quick and sometimes he almost misses it. The real Sultan is stomped out by the Lion whenever he peeks through. 

Geena: Like can the sultan see the shit that the lion is doing? BRO THAT WOULD BE TORTURE! Oh my god, when they finally break the spell on him there are going to be so many tears between Nasir and his dad.  

Kae: YOO WHAT IF IT’S LIKE HE CAN SEE EVERYTHING OUT OF HIS OWN EYES BUT CAN’T CONTROL IT? DUDE NOW IM EXTRAAA SAD. 

Geena: What’s sadder than all that? THE FACT THAT OUR FAVOURITE HIMBO, ALTAIR, GOT LEFT BEHIND. At the height of the action as Nasir and the surviving zumra are escaping we find out that Altair never makes it to their escape ship…. Even though it was Altair’s powers that helped them escape. And then we find out that he’s stuck in the Lion’s lair…. Thinking that no one cared to look for him… scuse me while I weep…. Hafsah didn’t have to do him like that 😭 

Kae: OKAY MOOD. YOU SAID IT PERFECTLY. And like, she wrote that part so well. Because you know how sometimes the reader knows something the characters don’t? Like, NONE OF US, THE READER OR THE CHARACTERS realized Altair was left behind until Hafsah mentioned it. It was heart-shattering. And everyone is instantly like “shit shit shit shit we fucked UP. We have to go back.” But they can’t go back. So everyone in this feels horrible. Altair feels horrible because he thinks his friends (and beautiful warrior crush) have left him behind. Nasir feels horrible because he left his brother. And the rest of the zumra because they left their friend. Also, the reader, because we see how all this shit went down. It’s just a whole roller coaster of emotions and ALTAIR IS LOVELY AND WE WANT HIM BACK. But this also leaves potential for him to switch sides and join his evil father. It’s totally a possibility and we do NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO OUR FAVE. OUR HABIBI (because he calls Nasir that and Nasir, the brooding death prince hates that) HAS TO COME BACK SAFE AND UNHARMED... fin

Conclusion 

Geena: That concludes our review, we didn’t really touch on the romance and so on but it’s how you say… a slow burn? Also, we had so many thoughts about the characters because they’re all soo interesting and have their own stories that we LOVED. Hafsah did a great job at world-building and introducing her individual characters gradually, she didn’t just slap us with like six characters at once and call it a day. AND HER PLOT TWISTS??? POETIC CINEMA… As a self-proclaimed dunce, I did not see half of them coming, every single thing I thought would happen didn’t happen. For example, I thought that Benyamin was Altair’s dad at some point. Overall, this is a great Arabia inspired fantasy with engaging characters and a fast-paced plot that keeps you guessing what’ll happen next. I give it 9/10 (-1 for Altair’s suffering). 

Kae: Ngl I totally forgot about the romance. “It means nothing” GAH THE FOOL. BUT YES. I can’t believe we forgot the romance and their collar bone touching. Also the inevitable ‘omg I just caught you coming out of the bath and now I see your scars oooo’ and honestly tho mood because I wouldn’t avert my eyes either. ANYWAY, the world-building is beautifully written as were the characters. Geena is right. Everyone has their own stories and the time was taken out to tell each one. None of the characters were dumbed down and neither were their backstories. They all had their own personalities and interests and quirks. The fantasy, the magic, and the history was rich.  There was never a boring moment. I give it a 10/10 because I was super entertained and the slowburn was to die for. BUUUT. I’m still SICK that Deen was killed off five minutes into the adventure because I would’ve loved to see him giving Nasir the ~death glare~ whenever he looked at Zafira ASJDADKLJK. 

Geena: IM CRYING, YES I AGREE 100% Wish we had gotten that good ol’ Deen-Nasir beef.  

Kae: omg it would’ve been such a good beef because I feel like they would absolutely become friends at some point and HATE that they respect each other. WELP. THAT BE ALL, FOLKS. READ THIS BOOK CAUSE IT’S GOOD.

Treehouse and Chill

The Simpsons reached another milestone this year with the recent airing of its thirtieth “Treehouse of Horror” special which, coincidentally, is the show’s 666th episode. While certainly not the best installment of this annual series, “Treehouse of Horror XXX” was pretty funny. Still, even the funniest jokes in this episode pale in comparison to some of the classic “Treehouse of Horror” specials. To this day, iconic segments such as “The Shinning”, “The Devil and Homer Simpson”, “Nightmare Cafeteria”, and “Citizen Kang” are still hard to top.

So, in honor of Halloween, thirty years of scary tales, and 90’s nostalgia, I want to briefly discuss my favorite five episodes of the Treehouse of Horror series. As always, ranking articles like these are subjective and are based on personal taste. Therefore, I don’t care if you nor yo’ mama thinks “Treehouse of Horror III” was trash. It’s still going on this list!

Honorable Mentions: “Treehouse of Horror II”, “Treehouse of Horror VIII”, and “Treehouse of Horror X”

Number Five: “Treehouse of Horror VII” (Season 8, Episode 1; 1996)

Although “The Thing and I” was a strong first segment, I enjoyed it least in “Treehouse of Horror VII”. Don’t get me wrong, I thought the story was pretty funny, I just like the second and third stories better. However, I do have a bone to pick with the ending of “The Thing and I”. Instead of confining Bart to the attic, why not keep both Hugo and Bart around after they discovered Bart was the evil twin? I mean, the family already lived with Bart for 10 years. They might as well kept the mistake going.

“The Genesis Tub” was amusing.  It may be the creative in me, but I really enjoy the concept of creating your own world and overseeing it.  Still, I felt the ending of “The Genesis Tub” was a bit abrupt.  I feel like the writers could have done so much more with the concept of Lisa creating and ruling her own Universe. Maybe she could have assaulted Bart with more fighter pilots. Maybe she could have built a massive ray gun a la the ray gun seen in “Citizen Kang”.  The ideas are limitless.

Speaking of “Citizen Kang”, this story is one of my favorites in the entire Treehouse of Horror series.  It's a brilliant satirical take on elections in the United States and the country’s politicians.  I especially like how the writers make fun of our ridiculous two-party system.  Like really, are our only choices between a drooling, Gangreen Gang, cyclops squid, and his twin sister?  Ross Perot should have brought up Kang’s and Kodos’ emails.  That always works.

Number Four: “Treehouse of Horror III” (Season 4, Episode 5; 1992)

Akin to my feelings about “Treehouse of Horror VII”, I’m only a big fan of two of the three segments in “Treehouse of Horror III”.  “King Homer” was just a’ight to me. Granted, the segment did have a great exchange between Mr. Smithers and Mr. Burns about the former’s distaste of seamen and women mixing.  Yet overall, I didn’t get a kick out of this story as much as I did the other two.

“Clown Without Pity” is a parody of the lauded Twilight Zone episode “Living Doll��.  This segment had its share of funny jokes, particularly the line from Patty about losing the remaining thread of her heterosexuality after seeing Homer horrifically run through the house butt naked.  I also like how the key to turning off the Krusty doll’s murderous rage, is switching the lever from “evil” to “good”.  Like, what happens if the lever accidentally switches back?  What if it breaks and he gets stuck on “evil”?  Take the doll back and get a refund!  Like, what are y’all doing?!

Finally, there is “Dial ‘Z’ for Zombie”.  No matter how self-aware I am about the absurdity of my kinemortophobia (fear of zombies), I still have it.  That is why I hated this segment as a child.  But as a grown woman, I find this story very funny.  It’s a pretty simple zombie story, but the jokes strewn throughout are what make it a highlight of the series.  The joke about Homer being immune to the zombies because he lacks brains is one that stands out in particular.  Also, what are George Washington, Albert Einstein, and William Shakespeare even doing in Springfield?

Number Three: “Treehouse of Horror IV” (Season 5, Episode 5; 1993)

Choosing between “Treehouse of Horror IV” and “Treehouse of Horror V” as my second favorite episode of the series was the hardest.  Ultimately, I prefer V ever so slightly over IV, but IV is a heavyweight in its own right.  “The Devil and Homer Simpson” shows just how far our dimwitted protagonist is willing to go to get his favorite, sugary snack.  You got to be desperate as all hell to sell your soul for a donut!  Other than Homer’s enjoyment of his ironic punishment, the best part of the segment is the trial itself.  The Devil’s voir dire game is trash.  How do you select the jury and still lose the case?  Never hire this man for anything.

“Terror at 5 ½ Feet” is yet another hilarious spin on an old Twilight Zone classic. This parody of “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” stays true to the basic horror elements and story structure as the original tale, but, of course, adds its own Simpsons brand of humor to it. However, unlike the original, Bart is still tormented by the gremlin after he’s hauled off to the psych ward.  Side note, Ned Flanders really took a lot of L’s in this episode.

I’ve never seen nor read the original Dracula, so I do not know how faithful “Bart Simpson’s Dracula” is to the original story.  Well, I guess that doesn’t really matter here because this story is so funny and scary that it holds your attention from beginning to end.  From the super happy fun slide that leads to the vampires in the basement to Homer staking Mr. Burns (Burnscula?) in the crotch, this story provides many laughs that make this story a classic.  Also, the plot twist that Marge (Margecula?) is really the head vampire is funny as hell.  Sorry if that was a spoiler but in fairness, this episode is 26 years old now.

Number Two: “Treehouse of Horror V” (Season 6, Episode 6; 1994)

“Treehouse of Horror V” is solid from beginning to end.  “The Shinning” is firmly in my top five list of favorite Treehouse of Horror segments.  This segment has several hilarious moments, from Homer taking three days to make the voyage to the cabin due to his forgetfulness to the blood not getting off at the right floor, to that scene where the complete lack of television and beer made Homer go . . . something . . . hmm.  Well, anyway, I can definitely say that every time I watch “The Shinning”, I’m feelin’ fine.

“The Shinning” is not the only highlight of this episode.  Homer’s time-traveling escapade in “Time and Punishment” introduced us to numerous interesting alternative timelines that ultimately drove Homer to a pure state of “IDGAF” at the end.  Still sucks that he missed out on that donut rain.  That timeline would have smacked!  

This episode’s final segment, “Nightmare Cafeteria”, truly is the stuff of nightmares. I mean, it’s super funny now that I’m grown, but this segment used to legitimately scare me as a child.  It also didn’t help that I was a fat kid.  Like, imagine living your best life and then the next moment, you’re Ms. Wilson’s Fried Adri.  Woo, chile.

Number One: “Treehouse of Horror” (Season 2, Episode 3; 1990)

It’s often said that nothing beats the original, and in the case of Treehouse of Horror episodes, this sentiment rings true.  The very first Treehouse of Horror is the greatest episode of the series.  One of the highlights of this episode is the dulcet baritone of James Earl Jones as the mover, Serak the Preparer, and the narrator of “The Raven”.

The first segment “Bad Dream House” is a comedic spin on the classic haunted house movie trope.  The quintessential 80s style horror music that accompanies the story throughout greatly adds to the mood of the piece without overdoing it.  The conclusion of “Bad Dream House” is what makes this story so funny.  The house destroys itself rather than live with the Simpsons. I don’t know what it feels like to be curved by a house, but it must make you feel all kinds of insecure.  

“Hungry Are the Damned” is our first introduction to Treehouse staples Kang and Kodos.  It is also our introduction to the sorely missed Serak the Preparer, who definitely needs to return at least once in this series.  This segment parodies the classic Twilight Zone episode “To Serve Man” and gives us a humorous plot twist at the end.  I suppose this episode also serves as a sort of origin story of Kang’s and Kodos’ beef with mankind because this is the only episode where they are genuinely nice.  Dang, all Lisa had to do was sit down and eat her food. Literally.

Finally, there is “The Raven”, which is absolutely my favorite segment in any Treehouse of Horror Episode.  What I like most about “The Raven” is how the crew manages to add comedy to the piece without losing any of the mystique of Edgar Allen Poe’s riveting poetry.  It also made this poem a bit easier to understand, which I greatly appreciate.  It’s a refined piece of television without the pompousness of the bourgeois.  In short, I like it. 

Honestly, no matter which of the thirty Treehouse of Horror episodes you like best, all are great for watching on Halloween for squeamish, easy-to-scare people like me.  So for those of us who aren’t bravely equipped to watch the more realistic, gory, and scary productions, I highly recommend binge-watching these episodes for some softer scary vibes and lots of laughs.

Cass fills the bowl with popcorn and goes upstairs to check on Hiro and Cora.*

Cass: It's movie night kids! I rented us 'Kentucky Kaiju Vs. Zombie-sauras'!

Hiro: *Peeking his head out from behind the screen* Yeah uh...be right down! Just..putting on my..uh movie clothes!

Cass: Okay... where's Cora and Baymax?

Hiro: *As he pulls out Baymax's rocket fist so that the robot can greet Cass without exposing himself while Cora stay hidden and silent until the coast is clear.* Uhh.. C-cora is in the bathroom at the moment and should be out in just a few minutes. And as for Baymax, he's right here.

Baymax: *Waving from behind the screen* Hello.

Cass: Well okay, but you guys better hurry before Mizuchi and I eat all the popcorn.

*Hiro gives out a sigh of relief. They barely had time for them to get inside just in time. Cora gives a quick but comforting pat to Hiro's shoulder and than runs straight to the bathroom so she can change in private while Hiro and Baymax rushed to their room. This was a close call with Cass, especially since Cora's father and Grandmother are joining them for movie night too.*

Baymax: What are movie clothes?

*The next morning Hiro, Cora, Gogo, and Baymax are in line with Fred as they enter in line into Krei Tech.*

Fred: Thanks for coming guys! Dad's stuck at Chateau Fredrickson so I'm representing the family.

Hiro: Any idea what this thing's about?

Fred: No idea, the invitation just said 'Prepare to have your worries disappear!'

*While he was talking however his hand hit the head of the person in front of them.*

Baymax: That would be an impressive, therapeutic, break through.

Gogo: Looks like Krei invited every rich jerk in town... as I was saying...

*Just then Binky Mole, the woman Fred had feared at his Bro-Tillion, came walking past the line with her son... Richardson Mole, Fred's arch nemesis and the one who proclaims Gogo as his 'dream girl'.

Fred: Ugh, Richardson Mole.

*Mole spots Gogo and flips up his collar.*

Cora: *Whispers to Fred* So that's the 'creepy comic geek' you and Gogo mentioned before Fred...

Mole: Hey Gogo, were you just talking about me with your friend 'dream girl'? My ears were burning.

Cora: Uh...Not sure if you want Gogo to be your girl...*Quietly* Creep.

*Mole turns to Cora who looks at her briefly before speaking.*

Mole: Mmm. I have to admit, you're pretty cute too. But since I already have my dream girl in Gogo, might I recommend my cousin to you?

*Cora looks incredulous while Hiro frowns unamused as he puts his arm around his girlfriend as he addresses Mo.*

Hiro: *Annoyed* Uh, I believe she already has a boyfriend. And you're looking at him!

Mole: Hmmm...well your loss.

Baymax: Burning often indicates infection. There is no infection, however your ceruminous glands are overproducing earwax.

Mole: *Covers his ears in embarrassment at this revelation* Ah gross! Shut it about my glands.

*Mole runs away to catch up with his mother as Cora lets out a breath of relief while Hiro, who was now slightly amused at what Baymax did, was still slightly glaring in the direction Mole ran of in.*

Gogo: Nice save Baymax.

*Gogo lifts her hand to give Baymax a high five. Baymax lifts his hand and gives Gogo a high five, wondering what is the importance of it.*

Cora: Ugh! You and Gogo were right Fred, he is a total creep!

Fred: I know right?

Hiro: Hey, at least he's not interested in you babe.

*Cora smiles at Hiro as she wraps her own arm around him, while giving him a small kiss of thanks on his cheek.*

Cora: Yeah, thanks Hiro.

*Finally they got inside the building where a woman is handing out ID cards to the invited guests. Once the gang pin on their own IDs, it's Baymax's turn.*

Baymax: I am not wearing clothing.

*Baymax uses his scanner to scan the ID so that it will show up on his vinyl body instead. Baymax catches up with the gang as the door opens to let the guests inside, with two body guards on each side. But one guard happens to be someone they know.*

Cora: *Surprised* Papa?

Mizuchi: *Also surprised* Cora! I didn't know you were invited!

*Even though it's a surprise to see each other, Cora gives her father a big hug.*

Cora: I didn't know you work at Krei Tech! Is everything alright here?

Mizuchi: Long hours and the occasional files here and there, but the pay is decent.

*Then he turns to Hiro, who is giving a very nervous smile and small wave to the goliath-sized man. When he first met him, he almost wet himself seeing him. Mizuchi's gigantic stature with his well-developed muscles are defiantly intimidating, and his eyes could become dangerous if something were to upset him. But Cora only saw him as a gentle and caring father that reminded her of a teddy bear. His dark grey hair with his beard mustache combo added the intimidation factor to a whole new level though, even when he's smiling like any other father at his child.*

Mizuchi: I can see you brought Hiro along, *Sigh* Well at least you're not alone with him.

Cora: It's okay papa, we're fine.

Mizuchi: Well either way, I hope you enjoy the show.

*And so the gang enter the theater where they find seats while Hiro explains what happened last night. Mizuchi waves at Cora happily before focusing on his job when his face turns to surprise when he sees the next person enter, and that someone winks at him with a flirtatious smile.*

Hiro: Aunt Cass almost busted us again, it's becoming a problem!

Cora: Not to mention Papa and Grandmama we're there this time too. They asked me why I was in the bathroom for so long... But we're fine...for now anyways.

*Hiro recalls the other time where he and Cora was fixing up Baymax's armor and barely avoided getting caught when Cass passed by to work out.*

Gogo: Why don't you just tell them?

Fred: What?! No! You never reveal your secret identity! Other than to your manservant or your sidekick...obviously.

Hiro: And definitely not to your aunt! Who would never let you out of the house if she found out. And you most definitely do not tell your girlfriend's father! Who would very most like kill you, hide your body and any evidence of said killing if he ever found out of that his daughter's boyfriend, who he doesn't like anyway, recruited said daughter in a superhero team that fights highly dangerous criminals on a daily basis!

*Hiro was practically freaking out now and was trying to come himself down before he made a scene, but that wasn't an easy task as he dreaded the very concept of what Mizuchi would do to him should he ever find out what he got Cora involved with with BH7. Luckily for him though, Baymax could sense Hiro's slight anxiety attack and immediately pulled him into his arm and started comforting him and calming him down. The other three, who were watching as this scene unfolded, shared a quick but concerned glance at each other before look back to their young friend/boyfriend in some worry as they watched him still be comforted by Baymax. Fortunately, Cora decided to try adding in her two cents to their current conversation about revealing their superhero identities.

Cora:...Ahem... While I..do agree somewhat with your suggestion Gogo, since it would better to prepare them if they are ever targeted by a villain, you don't know my dad! And no, he woundn't kill Hiro if he found out...but he probably would forbid us from ever being together again... The point is, he's still just learning to let me go to school on my own, if he ever does finds out what I'm doing with you guys, he'll make me drop out of school, most likely forbid me and Hiro from being together or even seeing eachother again as I mentioned before and lock me in my room for the rest of my life with little to no chance of parole! *Sighs* But at least he and Grandmama are busy so often that they're barely home, but still...they'll find out if I'm not careful. And if I'm not careful... Then it's bye-bye BH7 and bye-bye Hiro and Cora...

*Now starting to calm down a little from his slight anxiety attack from before, lets Baymax know that he's all right now as he listens to Cora but slightly freezes at the idea of being forbidden from being with her or ever seeing her again. He looks at her as she says those last few words and meekly says to her.*

Hiro: *Now scared of losing her* I don't want us to be bye-bye...

Cora: *Turns to Hiro and smile a small comforting smile at him as she gently places a hand on his cheek.* Don't worry babe. Nothing like that is gonna happen to us alright? We've gone through tougher things than this and we will handle it together "if' it ever does happen. Okay?

Hiro: *Takes comfort from his girlfriend's words as he take a breath while he places his own hand on top of her that was still on his cheek and than smiles back at her.* Okay babe, whatever you say.

*Just then, they all look up to see Mole turning his head to make the phone hand gesture as to say 'call me' to Gogo.*

Cora: *Grossed out* Blegh.

Gogo: Give it up junior, I'm never gonna date you! Like ever.

*This springs an idea in Hiro's head.*

Hiro: Wait a minute! Maybe that's the answer for Aunt Cass!

Fred: Hmmm eh.. I don't think Richardson is right for Aunt Cass. He's clearly into Gogo, then there's that whole age issue thing, you know...even if the age of consent is 13... *Muttering* Still think that's a bit kinky and a little disturbing...

Cora: *Rubs her eyes in annoyance as she cuts Fred off* Fred, could you stop and just listen to Hiro before you make assumptions please.

Hiro: Thank you Cora. And as I was about to say, I'm not talking about Richardson! I'm talking about an actual man.

Gogo: You should stay out of her personal life.

Hiro: Come on Gogo, dating might be good for her.

Gogo: Or you.

Cora: *Deadpanned* Did you already forget about the time Aunt Cass and my Grandmama were in an underground cooking competition...And how that turned out for us?

*Hiro smiles at Gogo and Cora awkwardly before the lights turn off. The guest clap as the screen show pictures of Alistair Krei as his voice is heard through the speakers.*

Krei: What does it mean to..be rich? Having things? Lots of things? Expensive things?

*Just then Krei himself appears on stage.*

Krei: Things that other people want? It could all disappear in an instant, all of your precious things.

*Just then the gang see a group of ninjas climb down and surround Krei. The gang stand up as they prepare to suit up and off those sword wielding ninjas.*

Cora: Ugh! Not again...

Krei: If only I had someone looking out for me! If only I had...a buddy.

*Just then some unknown force knocks out one of the ninjas to the ground. Then nets came flying through the air and entangle the remaining ninjas, trapping them.*

Krei: Ladies and gentlemen it is my distinct honor to introduce Buddy Guard!

*Just then Krei pressed a button to reveal a pill shaped robot with electro mag arms and a green orb to act as an eye.*

Krei: It's more than protection it's the friend you can depend...on. The slogan's not final.

*The gang stand down as they realized that those ninjas were just actors for his demonstration, but they are defiantly confused.*

Hiro: *Whispers* Fred what are you doing?

Fred: *whispers *There's still one ninja!

Gogo: *Whispers* It's just an act.

Cora: *Whispers* They're paid for this!

Fred: Oh... Okay-okay... So we shouldn't save Krei?

Hiro, Cora, and Gogo: *Whispers* No!

Krei: Buddy Guard is a military-grade drone. Capable of countering any attack.

*The buddy drone spots the lone ninja and traps him in the net.*

Krei: But who wants that eyesore hovering over them while taking a stroll on your private island. So we gave ugly here the ability to turn invisible...But how?

*Krei pushes the button again to make the drone go invisible while Krei's assistance, Lois Carter, joins him onstage holding something resembling cloth.*

Krei: Great question! Flexible display technology!

*The drone returns to normal to display the coding.*

Krei: A high resolution miracle it can look like anything!

*Krei uses the cloth to wrap his head and activated it to change into Lois Carter. He looks at Lois before he unwraps the cloth and blocks out her face.*

Krei: Or nothing at all.

*The real Lois' face disappears as it only shows the background. The cloth then returns to normal as it displays the buddy guard and flashes like an advertisement.*

Krei: So be smart, buy your self a buddy! Pre-order's in the lobby! Get them before they disappear!

*The rest of the clapping crowd left as Hiro, Gogo, and Cora merely blinked over this marketing ploy while Fred is amazed.*

Krei: That seemed to go well.

*The gang arrive on stage once the whole stadium is empty.*

Hiro: Impressive tech.

Krei: Thank you Hiro, that means a lot coming from you.

Hiro: How are your uh...programming safeguards?

Krei: Safe guards?

Gogo: You know, so your 'Buddy' doesn't turn into your enemy?

Cora: Yeah, and is it strong enough to prevent someone from hacking it?

Krei: Oh that kind of programming safeguards well yeah! There are so many awesome, really safe...safe...guards.

*Krei rubs his hand on Hiro's head, messing up his already messy hair.*

Krei: Anyway thanks for coming.

*And with that Krei and Lois leave the stage to return to work. But Hiro is quick to grab Lois' attention.*

Hiro: Umm excuse me! Question uh.. Are there really any safeguards?

*Lois takes a moment before she turns to answer.*

Lois: Officially, there are many and they are awesome!

*She does the same thing to Hiro like Krei did before. Cora just pouts, disbelief in her eyes as Lois leaves. The gang think over this as Cora finally says it.*

Cora: *Deadpanned* Yeah...I'm thinking...they don't...

*Krei finally arrives at his office when his door opens to...nobody. Krei sits back at his desk when the thing reveals itself to be a person.*

Scientist pawn: Surprise!

Krei: *Startled* Ah!

*Krei covers himself before he realizes who the intruder is.*

Krei: Doctor Myer?

Myer: When I sold you my flexible display technology, you gave me your word my invention will be used for fun things! Like hiding people at surprise parties!

Krei: The Buddy Guard is fun! What's more fun than a buddy?

Myer: You're using it to hurt people!

Krei: Hurt people no, I'm using it to defend people. Thanks for stopping by Mel, may I call you Mel? We should go for muffins sometime.

Mel: Going for muffins isn't a thing, you're just trying to get rid of me! I demand you give me my plans back!

*Mel spots his blue prints and is about to grab it but Krei got to it first.*

Krei: Sorry Mel, the Buddy Guard's going to be huge.

*Krei uses his ID card to lock the plans into a private file cabinet.*

Krei: Oh look, here's a few.

*Krei presses a button to reveal three buddy guards just behind Mel.*

Krei: See Dr. Myer out.

Mel: You haven't seen the last of me!

*Krei then throws the cloth on Mel to cover his face and become invisible as the buddy guards drag him out of his office.*

Krei: Pretty sure I have.

Mel: This is unacceptable and unpleasant and-

*The buddy guards take Mel out the door, leaving Krei in peace.*

*Meanwhile at SFIT, the entire gang are doing their usual business, but currently Hiro along with Fred, Wasabi, and Cora are looking over a dating website to look for someone to date Cass.*

Hiro: No.

*Herman Wexler is too nutty for Cass.*

Hiro: No.

*DJ 6ix Sk1llz Br0 is the definition of 'nice guy'.*

Hiro: No.

*Theo ''Healingtree'' Schwartz is too natural for Cass.*

Hiro: A big big no! No!

Fred: Wait wait wait wait! That guy has a mustache! It's a proven fact that the coolest guys have mustaches!

Cora: What about guys with the beard and mustache combo?

Wasabi: Fred, Cora, be serious the mustache or beard doesn't make the man. Its what's inside...the mouth. I cannot stress enough the importance of dental hygiene.

Cora: I agree with you Wasabi...sort of...I mean look at my Dad! He may look like a giant wrestler, but he's the sweetest guy you've ever known. My Mom certainly saw it.

*Cora pulls out her phone and pulls up a picture of her deceased mother. The woman's warm smile matches with the sparkling sea blue eyes. Cora gives a sad smile at the picture, wondering how her mom and dad had fallen in love. She looks up and sees the guys staring at the photo, eyes wide in surprise.*

Fred: *Awestruck* Wow...um...she's..very… good looking...

Wasabi: *Also awestruck* I've never seen teeth sparkle like that!

Cora: Hehe...yeah...Dad says he wonders what Mom ever saw in him to love and eventually marry him... he still loves her...even after all these years after she died...

*The guys snap back into reality as the guys, sans Hiro, are surprised that Cora's mother is dead.*

Wasabi: *Now solemn at this new information* Oh...you have my condolences..

Fred: *Also solemn now* Woah... Sorry about that little dudette..didn't know...

Cora: *Still looking at her mother's picture with a sad smile* It's okay...as I mentioned before, it's been...years since then...

*Across the room, Honey Lemon and Gogo are working together on a chemical project.*

Honey Lemon: Hiro maybe your aunt should pick for herself.

Hiro: She needs a little push, I need a little space. Everybody wins!

Krei: Hey great work space!

*Hiro turns his chair around to see Krei and Lois arriving at their lab workspace.*

Krei: Is that a vending machine? Fun.

Cora: Mr. Krei, what are you doing here?

Krei: I've came to talk to you-

*Krei then spots the photo of Cora's mother on her phone.*

Krei: Say~...Cora, who is that woman on your phone? A friend of yours?

*Krei flashes his smile to which Cora caught on immediately. She deadpans as she locks her phone back up.*

Cora: That's my mom, and she's dead.

*Krei's eyes widened before he clears his throat.*

Krei: Oh! I..I'm sorry for your loss... As I was saying, I had my team check out those safeguards you were talking about and it turns out there was a slight...glitch.

*Lois pulls out a small video showing the scientists running for their lives while one of them informs Krei via camera.*

Lois: *Sigh* Krei Tech has a pretty spotty record of bringing products to launch too soon...

*Krei frowns at Lois.*

Lois: You know it's true.

*Krei grabs the buddy guard from Lois' hands and hands it to Hiro.*

Krei: I just want you to make sure it's safe...more or less.

Hiro: What's in it for us?

Krei: I won't tell the world that you're Big Hero 7.

Honey Lemon: *Gasp*!

Wasabi: Huh?

Hiro: *Gasp*

Fred: *Gasp*

Gogo: What's wrong with you?!

Cora: You gave us your word that you wouldt tell anyone after we saved you from Callaghan! The same one who wanted you DEAD!

*Wasabi checks around the lab to make sure they are completely alone.*

Wasabi: Yeah, be cool man!

Krei: Oh I can be cool... if you do what I want. Or I can be ice cold.

Hiro: This sounds like you're blackmailing us!

Krei: My attorney advises against using the word 'blackmail'.

*As Krei is about to exit through the door, Cass happens to be heading towards the lab holding papers. This causes the two adults to bump into each other, resulting in Krei falling and Cass catching him. Papers are sprawled on the ground but they are currently in the moment.*

Krei: Nice catch...

Cass: Thanks...Nice fall...

*Cora blinks incredulously as Hiro immediately steps in to save his aunt after he gives the buddy guard to Gogo.*

Hiro: Aunt Cass, hey wha-what-what are you doing here?

*Hiro separates Krei from Cass. The two adults seem lost in a haze before Cass remembers why she was here.*

Cass: Oh uh, you forgot your chemistry... homework.

Krei: I think I'm feeling a little chemistry right now.

Cass: *Giggling a little* Are you flirting with me? Wow this feels like flirting.

*There is moments of silence until Hiro sees Cora making gestures to signal him to break the silence. Just then Cora's phone beeps so she opens it.*

Hiro: OK! Thanks hehe.

*Hiro grabs his Aunt's arm to guide her to the exit.*

Hiro: You can go now Aunt Cass!

Krei: Aunt Cass...You wouldn't happen to be the same Aunt Cass from the Bro-tillion would you? And also...what an enchanting name.

Cass: Yeah I am! That was...hehe..quite a wild party. And thanks but, people who aren't my nephew or his girlfriend just call me Cass.

Hiro: Or! Maybe don't call her anything! At all!

Krei: How about dinner tonight, Cass? Say around seven?

Hiro: Uh she's busy! Forever!

Cass: Well, I am busy. I own my own business, I mean! Of course, you own your own business too! A bigger business!

Hiro: That's a good point! I bet he's even busier!

Cass: Oh heck if you can make time so can I! I'd be delighted Mr. Krei.

Krei: People who aren't your nephew or his girlfriend call me Alistair.

*Hiro opens his mouth to speak but finds no words to object.*

Gogo: Looks like you got what you wanted. Congratulations.

*After the two adults leave the room, the gang hear the sound of a phone dropping to the floor. Hiro turns around to see Cora in a state of shock, her hands still in place as if she's still holding her phone. She also appears to be sweating.*

Hiro: *Suddenly worried* Cora? What's wrong?

*Wasabi picks up Cora's phone to see if it's damaged.*

Wasabi: Oh!...um...

*Hiro grabs Cora's phone and sees a text from her father which read the following.*

'So Cora...as a heads up...I'm going out with an internet date tonight! I'll be home late so don't worry about Dinner. Wish me luck! Love, Papa.'

*His eyes widen as he hears Cora fall to the ground, fainting from the text. Being the good boyfriend that he is, he is instantly at his fallen girlfriend's side trying to bring her around.*

Honey Lemon: *Confused and concerned* Hiro, what happened?

*Hiro turns to the gang with a look a dread on his face.*

Hiro: *Really worried* Well, let's just say it looks like I'm not the only one who's family member is going out tonight.

*Later on that evening, Hiro is pacing around the cafe while Baymax watches him. Cora is sitting on a chair absently stroking Mochi as he purrs contently, her eyes still wide with shock.*

Baymax: I am detecting an abnormal walk pattern.

Hiro: It's not abnormal, its pacing! Something people do when they're not happy about their aunt dating!

Baymax: You said you wanted Aunt Cass to date.

Hiro: Yeah but not-

*Knocking is heard in front of the cafe door, signaling them that Cass' date is here. Hiro opens the to find none other than Krei himself, holding a bouquet of tulips.*

Hiro: Krei...

*Mochi yowled from Cora's lap when he sees Krei. Cora doesn't even move and can only blink.*

Krei: Hiro! Third time I've seen you today!

Hiro: Yeah! Third time, but it's not the charm.

Krei: HA! Funny, I think. Jokes aren't really my thing.

*Krei enters the cafe.*

Krei: Is your aunt ready?

Cass: She is!

*Cass appears by the doorway, dressed in a purpler sheath dress with black high heels. In other words, Cass looks stunning tonight.*

Baymax: Mr. Krei. Your heart rate is elevated. Are you feeling well?

Krei: Better than well. You look incredible.

*Krei walks over to Cass to hand her the tulips he brought.*

Krei: These are for you.

Cass: Oh these are beautiful.

Krei: They're the rarest tulips in the world, they bloom only once every 20 years they're very expensive. Shall we?

*The couple are heading out the door as Cass hands Hiro the flowers.*

Cass: Could you put these in water Hiro?

*Hiro takes one look at the bouquet and as soon as they left, he marches upstairs and places the flowers in the toilet. He goes back downstairs where he sees that his girlfriend is still in her frozen state.*

Hiro: *Approaching his frozen girlfriend carefully* Uh Cora? You feeling okay?

*Finally Cora looks up and speaks.*

Cora: *Somewhat monotoned* Yeah...just give me a moment. I gotta let out these feelings.

Baymax: It is important to not hold back your emotions to maintain emotional health.

Cora: *Still somewhat monotoned* What he said... now excuse me please.

*They are currently in the living room where Hiro is quietly sitting down on the hanging chair and Baymax sits on the floor chair next to him as they hear Cora letting out, or more like raging out, her thoughts in the bathroom.*

Cora: *Raging out* WHAT THE HECK IS PAPA THINKING?! HE JUST GOES ON WITH A TEXT SAYING 'HEY CORA DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME I'M JUST HEADING TO A HOT DATE WITH A STRANGER!' WHY IS HE DOING THIS?! HE'S NEVER GONE A DATE SINCE...FOREVER! WHY IS HE DOING THIS TO ME?! HOW COULD HE DO THIS TO MAMA?! AAAAAHHHHHH!

*A few moments of silence stay as Hiro and Baymax silently and awkwardly glance at the bathroom door and than at each other until Cora opens the bathroom door, taking deep breathes as she steps out. She then goes over to Hiro and sits on the hanging chair with him and sighs.*

Hiro: *Still concerned as he gently puts his arm around her.* Hey... You doing okay now?...

Cora: *Leans into Hiro's comfort as he puts his arm around her and replies in a quiet and somewhat exhausted voice.* Not completely okay, but I feel a little better than I did before I guess...

*Baymax turns his head to scan Cora.*

Baymax: You are upset because your Papa is going on a date.

Cora: *Looks up to him* What?

Baymax: Your scan indicates that you are feeling angry, betrayed, distressed, worried, and guilty over this date.

*Cora shakes her head before she turns her attention back to Hiro, who had now gotten up and resumed to pacing again.*

Cora: *Quiet and confused* Hiro?

Baymax: *Petting Mochi* More pacing.

Hiro: *Starting to freak out now* W-w-what if this date goes great? What if they really like each other?! They couldn't get married!? Could they?!

Baymax: *Still petting Mochi* They are of legal age for marriage. Mr. Krei would then be your uncle.

Cora: *Absolute denial while also freaking out at the concept that the same thing could happen to her Dad.* No! Nada! Na-ah! Nope! Can't happen! A thousand times no! And I'm saying this for my Papa's date too!

Hiro: Uncle Krei?! Not happening!

Cora: *Got up to follow Hiro as he started to walk away* But what are we gonna do Hiro? We don't even know where they're going!

Hiro: Aunt Cass told me they're heading uptown. If we can hurry we can catch up!

Cora: *Now becoming more determined* Okay! But first I gotta run back to my house. I may have something for this...

*While that was happening, the rest of the gang is at the lab reviewing over the buddy guard Krei blackmailed them to fix.*

Honey Lemon: It's actually kind of cute!

Gogo: Sure...for a lethal weapon.

Wasabi: You, Hiro and Cora were right! It wouldn't take much of a glitch to scramble this things programming, let alone someone to hack it.

Gogo: Where are Hiro and Cora anyway?

Honey Lemon: Oh Hiro texted me! He and Cora are busy following Krei and Cass on their date.

Gogo: Yeah, that's normal.

*The moment Fred comes in with take out bags of Noodle burger*

Fred: Who needs a Noodle Burger break?

Honey Lemon: Yes!

Gogo: Starving.

Wasabi: Did you bring napkins?

*Fred places the sodas nearby the buddy guard.*

Wasabi: Not a good place to do that!

*But it's too late as Fred reaches for some fries and his elbow hits the sodas, spilling them over the buddy guard. Just as Wasabi is about to scold Fred, the buddy guard floats up with its eye turning red, identifying the group as enemies.*

Gogo: That's why.

*The buddy guard turns invisible to avoid being tracked by the enemies before it.*

Fred: well cool. It want to play Hide and Seek ah-!

*A laser blast proves him other wise.*

Gogo: Yeah, not playing Hide and Seek.

*The buddy guard scans the enemies until it strikes again. The laser hits Gogo and then Honey Lemon. Fred pulls out his straw to use as a sword.*

Fred: Show yourself coward!

*The next laser zaps Fred again, knocking him to the floor. And then it hits Wasabi.*

Wasabi: How can we fight what we can't see?!

Fred: With Ketchup!

*Fred pulls out ketchup packets and sprays them all over the lab until it coats the invisible drone.*

Honey Lemon: Fred it worked!

*With that, Honey Lemon hits the drone with a book, which flies to Gogo who slams it with a fire extinguisher and it finally hits the wall. The cloaking technology wears off as the drone powers down from the damage. The gang walk hesitantly with their weapons at hand.*

Wasabi: Yeah! How'd you like us now Buddy!

*The drone zaps Wasabi one more time before it shuts down.*

*A Limousine stops by a rather popular and high class restaurant uptown. Krei and Cass step out of the car to which she notices the long line.*

Cass: Wow look at this line! I hope you have a reservation.

Krei: Reservation? I don't need one.

Server: It looks like we have an opening for two in... Six hours.

*Krei and Cass merely cut in line which concerns Cass.*

Server: Right this way Mr. Krei.

Cass: Sorry! You all have amazing shoes!

*Krei holds Cass' hand before he bumps into someone.*

Krei: Excuse me I-

*But Krei's words fail to come out as he sees a very tall and muscular man turn his head, his eyes focused on him. The tall man turns around to face Krei, to which the entrepreneur felt like he is going to die any minute for bumping into a man that could snap his body in half. Cass looks up and smiles up at him.*

Cass: Oh hi Mizuchi! I didn't expect to see you here!

Mizuchi: Hello Miss Cass. It's very nice to see you too.

*Krei looks back and forth at his date and the muscular man, wondering how and why do they know each other. Cass notices and clears her throat.*

Cass: Oh Alistair, this is my friend Mizuchi Mizichio. he's the father of my nephew's girlfriend Cora. He's really nice once you get to know him. *To Mizuchi* By the way, why are you here Mizuchi?

*Mizuchi rubs his head as he gives a small blush and his eyes look away.*

Mizuchi: I...I also have date..

*A slender woman with orange hair in a Qi Pao dark blue dress appears beside him, wearing gold and pearls as she gives a slender smile.*

Moira: Greetings, I am Moira Lacroix. I think I saw you Mr. Krei at the Buddy Guard demonstration? Impressive by the way.

Krei: *Pleased* Oh! Yes, I'm glad to hear it from you Madame Lacroix.

Moira: And your security guard here is also very impressive.

*She holds Mizuchi's arm close, which causes the tall man to blush even deeper.*

Moira: *Seductive* His muscle fibers are exceptional for his age...and well proportioned.

Krei: *A tad nervous* Yeah... I've noticed.

Cass: Me too.

*Cass' face gives a small blush until two separate servers come to escort them to their tables. Though Mizuchi is straining his smile as sweat forms on his forehead. While that is going on, Hiro is behind the building with Baymax.*

Hiro: Where's Cora? She said she'd be here already!

Cora: I'm here!

*Hiro turns his head to see Cora wearing a strapless red dress with black flats and a black hooded jacket. The hood is covering her hair and the upper part of her face at the moment. Hiro blinks before he shakes out of it.*

Hiro: What took you so long?

Cora: I thought if we are going to sneak inside we have to blend in! It's already enough that we're 14, the least we can do is be dressed up for the part!

Hiro: Yet you're wearing a jacket with your hood on?

Cora: Well what about you?

Hiro:...Touche. Either way, we have to go in the back!

*The three head into the alley where they see a door connected to the kitchen and garbage bags nearby. Hiro and Cora immediately whisper their plan to Baymax and head for action. Baymax presses a button next to the door where a chef answers.*

Baymax: *Holding a garbage bag* Hello. I am Baymax.

Chef: So what? Is that bag for me?

*While the chef is distracted Hiro and Cora slowly walk to the door behind them.*

Baymax: You may have the bag.

Chef: What's in it?

*Baymax scans for a moment before he answers the chef.*

Baymax: Garbage.

Chef: Why would I want garbage?

Baymax: *Blinks* I do not know.

Chef: Is this some kind of joke?!

Baymax: I do not understand jokes.

Chef: Yeah I'm gonna close the door now!

*The chef slams the door in front of Baymax's face.*

Baymax: Goodbye.

*Thankfully Hiro and Cora have successfully sneak inside the restaurant and are now treading through. Meanwhile Cass and Krei are looking over their menu.*

Cass: Hel~lo! Look at these prices!

Krei: I was hoping you noticed.

Cass: I serve chicken fingers at the Lucky Cat, that is not how much chicken cost.

Krei: Chicken have fingers? Do you mean like- the toes?

Cass: ...I'm gonna get the fish.

*Across from them is Mizuchi and Moira who are also ordering food. Mizuchi squints his eye to figure out the names of the food listed inside. He looks up to see Moira leaning forward, punctuating her bust which causes Mizuchi to nervously chuckle and wave an awkward hi.*

*Just outside the restaurant, Mel comes in disguised in his invisibility cloak.*

Mel: Well is he gonna be surprised.

*Back at the lab, Wasabi is observing the now broken buddy guard.*

Wasabi: When Fred spilled his drink, it shorted out the drone's threat assessment program.

Gogo: So it thought we were all bad guys.

*Fred picks up the drone.*

Fred: We are super heroes! We are the definition of good guys! Come on!

Honey Lemon: These Buddies are dangerous, Krei cannot sell them to the public.

*Back at the restaurant, Hiro and Cora are hiding underneath an ice sculpture of a bear dressed in dapper clothing. Hiro and Cora then spot Cass and Krei at their table.*

Cass: I never would have guessed that you're a fan of Origami too.

*Krei is indeed a fan of Origami, as he uses a 20 dollar bill to fold.*

Krei: Ah yes, we always had plenty laying around. Papa never let me fold anything bigger than a 50, but I made do.

*Krei then presented her a dollar paper crane.*

Cass: A crane! Amazing!

*Krei hands her the crane.*

Cass: Check this out!

*Cass uses the same dollar bill to turn the crane into a miniature version of Krei himself.*

Krei: It's me! And I'm literally made of money! Just like in my dreams. I'll treasure it always.

*Hiro goes out to sabotage the date and Cora is about to follow suit until she sees across Krei and Cass her father and his date. Cora's eyes widen before she stands up, her eyes frowning as she steps forward to confront her father, forgetting about their mission at hand. Hiro turns his head to see Cora heading to her father's table and immediately he whisper shouts in hopes she would listen to him.*

Hiro: *Whisper shouts* Cora wait! Not now!

*But Cora isn't even listening to Hiro anymore as her eyes slowly turn red. She is about to reach the table when a server gets in front of her.*

Server 2: What are you doing here?! You're supposed to be on stage in 30 seconds!

Cora: *Startled and confused* Wha-? Umm I-

Server: No time just go!

*The server pushes Cora to the small stage where a band is waiting and in the process removes her black jacket. Cora is put on stage where the lights blacked out, causing Hiro to loose sight of Krei and Cass, and the spotlight on her. Soon Cora is facing a crowd of people now looking at her, waiting for her to sing.*

Cora: *Starts getting nervous* Uh oh...

*The crowd is silent as Cora is holding onto the microphone as if her life depended on it. She looks at the band who are gesturing her to start singing, but she is frozen. She never sang in public before and now her mind is completely blank. But she knew if she doesn't sing soon the workers will realize she snuck inside. So Cora takes a very deep breath before she lets out the first song that pops into her head.*

Cora: You're in my arms...and all the world is calm~

*The pianist recognizes the song she's singing and so begins to play. The rest of the band catches on and starts to join in with the pianist.*

Cora: The music playing on for only two... So close together, and when I'm with you... So close to feeling alive~

*The crowd at this point is becoming mesmerized by the young girl's singing, a love song being sung by a voice so pure and beautiful. Hiro searches frantically for Cora until he notices the crowd is currently silent and all looking in the same direction. Hiro turns his head in the direction the crowd is looking in and finally see why everyone is so quiet, up on the stage is a young girl with short golden hair as she beautifully sings a song with her eyes closed. And for a moment his world stops as he couldn't help but listen to the girl's enchanting voice.*

Cora: A life goes by, romantic dreams will die... so I bid mine goodbye and never knew... So close was waiting, waiting here with you... And now forever I know... All that I wanted to hold you so close... So close to reaching that famous happy end~

*The mood throughout the restaurant becomes more slow and warm. Krei and Cass are finding themselves lost in each other's eyes, a new feeling creeping inside them that they invited. Mizuchi's heart is beating like crazy as he recalls the memories of Akemi, he's beloved wife and Mother to Cora. He sighs with happiness as he recalls the soft words of love they spoke long ago. Moira finds herself staring deep into his eyes, admiring the deep rich brown color that showed strength and gentleness at the same time.*

Cora: Almost believing this was not pretend... Now you're beside me and look how far we've come...So far...we are...so close~

*Cora opens her ocean-blue eyes eyes to which Hiro finally recognizes the girl with the angelic voice. As she looks just like her mother in the photos she showed him.*

Hiro: *Shocked and whisper shouts* Cora?!

*He then notices the rest of the patrons are either sighing blissfully, getting lost in each others eyes, and some of the waiters even cuddling together. Some of the dates even started slow dancing to the song with sighs of content. Hiro looks at his girlfriend and then at the crowd, wondering why they are all acting so weird with Cora singing, before they were just being normal! They were just chatting and having dinner while the servers worked! Now they were all in some blissful, lovey-dovey trance or something! But Hiro didn't think on this for long as he finally spots Krei and Cass, who are leaning over the table as they are slowly inching their faces closer as if they are about to-*

Hiro: *Starts panicking* Oh no!

*Hiro runs fast while Cora continues to sing, hoping to prevent Krei and Cass from kissing and therefore fall in love! For real!*

Cora: Oh how could I face the faceless days? If I should lose you now?... We're so close to reaching that famous happy end, almost believing that this was not pretend. Let's go on dreaming for we know we are~

*As Hiro was heading over to the table Krei and Cass are sitting he sees something for him to hide in when he got there. The waiter was passing through between Krei and Cass' table while pushing a rolling tablecloth-covered tray when Cora began singing. He hides on the other side of the table crouching. meanwhile, Mel finally found his way into the center where he is absentmindedly heading straight for the wires connecting to Cora's microphone.*

Cora: So close... so close...and still so fa-!

*Cora's microphone is suddenly pulled from her hand, causing the speaker to screech and therefore snap out the patrons out of their trance. With the waiter out of the trance, Hiro sticks out his foot and trips the waiter. The waiter drops the food onto Krei's suit just as Krei and Cass are about to kiss.*

Krei: Augh! I am so-!

Waiter: *Scared* Mister Krei!

*Krei is about to give the waiter a piece of his mind before he sees Cass just sitting in her chair awkwardly.*

Krei: Ah... Not going to have you fired. Cause just what kind of monster would get a guy fired for a simple mistake! Not me, not a monster!

*He hands the waiter a spare 20 dollar bill.*

Krei: Hey here's 20 bucks! Bye yourself some chicken toes...

Waiter: *Slightly shocked* O...kay?

*The waiter walks away confused over the whole situation*

Cass: That was sweet, but you got a little something from..yeah.. pretty much all over.

*Krei looks down at his suit to notice the food stains.*

Krei: Right!

*Krei walks away to the restroom as Hiro is still hiding underneath the rolling tablecloth-covered tray.*

Hiro: *Sly and smug* Sorry uncle Krei.

*Just then, Cora joins him under the rolling tablecloth-covered tray as well.*

Hiro: *Now back to being confused over what just a few moments ago* Hey! what happened out there?

Cora: I saw Papa here! And he's with that-that lady! I don't think she likes him for him!

Hiro: *Slightly annoyed* I already know that Cora! I was trying to call you out of it when I saw you starting to walk over to their table! But that's not what I meant! I mean, why were you singing up on stage? And second,*Now slightly in awe at finally seeing his girlfriend's natural hair and eye colors* you're an ocean-blue-eyed golden-blonde just like your Mom?

*Cora notices her hood is still down which causes her to blush under her boyfriend's awestruck gaze.*

Cora: *Kinda embarrassed* Some guy thought I was a performer, so I had to sing otherwise they would figure out I wasn't really suppose to be here and kick me out. Also, Aunt Cass would recognize me in an instant if she saw me! So I removed my blue hair-dye and purple eye-contacts just for this one time so she wouldn't! I have to admit though, I definitely did not expect to see my Papa here, so it might be a different story if he sees me...

Hiro: *Confused* But how did you remove the hair-dye so quickly?

Cora: It's a special hair-dye of my own invention. it washes out in hot water. So I always shower in cold water.

Hiro: *Impressed* Huh. That's pretty cool. *Now being in awe again and starting to feel as he did the night he first met Cora* I have to say though... seeing you blue-eyed and blonde-haired is...wow... I'm so used to seeing you with blue hair and purple eyes...but seeing you like this... And I know this is gonna sound really cheesy and stuff, but...I think...I'm falling for you all over again...

Cora: *Looking at her boyfriend in shock at his words as a heavy blush colors and warms her cheeks and she asks him in a small voice as looks deep into his eyes* R-really... Y-you're really serious?...

Hiro: *He looks back into her eyes just as deeply as he answers her* Yeah...I'm really serious...*But also feeling confused too* But there is one thing I don't understand, don't get me wrong, I still love the blue-hair, purple-eyes you that I've known and loved like crazy for long while now, But...if you don't mind me asking...why did you dye your hair and get color-contacts in the first place?

Cora: *Sighs before turning slightly away and breaking eye contact with Hiro.* Well...long story short, there were, and still are times when Papa and Grandmama would cry at Mama's shrine...and it didn't help that I looked a lot like her. One time when I was younger, Grandmama accidentally called me Akemi... So I made this hair dye and got color eye contacts and it's been my style ever since I started it. Papa and Grandmama were surprised at first but they accepted it.

Hiro: A little surprised* Oh wow... That...must not have been easy, for any of you... I mean, when I first saw you up on stage...I didn't recognize you at first, but...than you opened your eyes...and I was instantly reminded of those pictures of your Mom that you showed me before...and I just knew it had to be you... *Sighs dejectedly* I'm sorry Cora...

Cora: *Tries to cheer her boyfriend up* Hey, don't sweat it Hiro. If I were in your shoes I don't think I would've recognize me either. I'm so used to looking the way I usually am that even I don't quite recognize myself without the dye and contacts. But it's okay. I am flattered that you like the real me too. I've... been wanting to show you for awhile now... But I didn't know what you would think...

Hiro: *Smiles bright and sweetly to her as he cups her still warm cheeks in his hands* Hey, no matter what colors your hair and eyes are, whether you have blue hair and purple eyes, blond hair and blue eyes, or even blue hair with blue eye or blond hair with purple eyes*This causes both of them to laugh a little*. The point is, no matter what you look like, you're still Cora Mizichio, you're still, and always will be my girl.

*At this point, Cora's eyes started to get a little watery from the sweet, and somewhat funny, declaration of love Hiro just pronounced to her. And having no words to describe how it made her feel, she grabbed Hiro by his hoodie and crashed her lips to his in a deep, heartfelt kiss. Hiro was a but startled from the sudden moves his girlfriend made that it took him a few moments for it to all register before he finally started kissing her back. At the moment, they had temporarily forgotten that they were hiding under a tablecloth-covered rolling tray in an uptown restaurant with the intent of ruining Aunt Cass' date with Krei. But at the moment, they didn't seem to care or mind and just continue on with their special moment.

*Meanwhile in the restroom, Krei is cleaning up from the incident, but finds it a little difficult to remove.*

Mel: Surprise!

*Mel takes off his invisibility cloak behind Krei.*

Krei: *Badly startled* Augh! Stop doing that Mel!

Mel: I'll be needing your key card...Alistair.

*After that, Mel walks out the bathroom, dressed in a identical suit as Krei. He looks around before wrapping his head to make himself look like Krei.*

Cass: Alistair?

*Mel stops in his tracks when Cass sees him.*

Cass: Wow, you cleaned up nice.

Mel 'Krei': Oh uh... yeah uh... I'm sorry, something came up at the office and I have to go!

*Mizuchi, looking away from his date for a moment, spots Cass and 'Krei' together.*

Cass: Wait! Are you ditching me?!

'Krei': Well yeah I do have to leave now and alone!

*'Krei' walks away from Cass.*

Cass: *Annoyed and ticked off* You have to at least give me a ride home Buster! And what happened to your voice?

'Krei': What happened to your voice?

*Mizuchi watches as this scene goes on and his mind starts to race as he notices some things that seemed off with his boss. If he remembered correctly, Krei's shirt is made of silk. And stains on silk are impossible to remove, which means that either Krei had a spare shirt hidden carefully on his person for emergencies or... Mizuchi stands up and walks to follow them*

Moira: *Confused* Wait! Where are you going?

Mizuchi: *Quickly and awkwardly* ThankyouforthedatebutIdon'tthinkit'sgoingtoworkoutsorryfortroublingyougoodbye!

*The tall man slams his cash onto the nearest waiter as he quickly walks out of the restaurant while Hiro and Cora peek their heads out from under the tablecloth-covered rolling tray. Having stopped making out a few minutes ago so they could get back to work with ruining Aunt Cass' date. But now there seemed to be a change in plans as both teens had overheard the whole thing and thought there was something off about 'Krei' and how he suddenly blew Aunt Cass' off out of the blue like that.*

Hiro: *Contacting Baymax* Baymax! Krei and Aunt Cass are leaving but...Krei's acting weird.

*Outside, Baymax is scanning the two people.*

Baymax: Mr. Krei appears normal. But his DNA has changed.

Hiro: Hmmm...

*Hiro looks at the bathroom door where Krei had just exited out of a moment ago.

Hiro: Stay here.

Cora: Okay.

*Hiro walks into the bathroom, looking for anything suspicious until he hears a muffled voice. Hiro opens a bathroom stall to find Alistair Krei tied up and gagged. Hiro rips the duct tape from his mouth.*

Krei: He stole my ID! And my buy nine sandwiches get the tenth sandwich free card!

Hiro: But if you're here then who's- Aunt Cass!

*Hiro revs up his brother's moped with Cora and Krei sitting behind him, driving off to catch the stranger.*

Hiro: Gogo! A Krei impostor has Aunt Cass!

*That's when Cora notices someone behind the limo but in front of them. Mizuchi is following the car on his Black Harley Motorcycle wearing his black helmet.*

Cora: And not only that, My Papa is following right behind them! He must've notice something was off and decided to go after them to try and protect Aunt Cass!

Krei: *Trying to call out to Cass* Cass! He's not me! I'm me! And I'm paying for that Limo!

Hiro: Get the others and meet us at Krei Tech!

*Back in the Limo, Cass is currently chewing out 'Krei' for his sudden change in behavior.*

Cass: *Very annoyed* What is so important that you need to go to your office in the middle of our date!

'Krei': Uh it's uh... it's a surprise.

Cass: I'm not a fan of surprises.

'Krei': You know there's nothing like a surprise party. The bond shared by a group of people hiding and waiting together in the dark.

Cass: I guess...

'Krei': Wouldn't it be great if there was something that would make you invisible so you can have the ultimate surprise party?

Cass:*A bit unnerved now and slightly backs away from her 'date'*...Are you feeling okay?

'Krei': Yes sorry. I just get really excited about things sometimes.

Cass: Like surprise parties?

'Krei': Yeah uh it's uh...rich person thing you wouldn't understand.

Cass: *Muttering* Yeah you're right about that.

*The Limo finally reaches Krei Tech where 'Krei' goes inside.*

'Krei': Hi... I'm-

*The security guard stands up when he sees his 'boss'.*

Security Guard: Mr. Krei! Working late?

'Krei': Oh is..that something I would do? Then-then yes! Yes I am.

*the security guard lets out a sigh of relief until he sees another person come in, this time it's Mizuchi.*

Security Guard: Oh hey Mizuchi what's up? Working late too?

Mizuchi: You could say that.

*The tall man walks past the guard as he follows the 'boss' into his office. Mel uses Krei's ID to open the file and finally retrieve his blue prints.*

Mel: Check and mate-!

Big hero 7: Surprise!

*The rest of Big Hero 7, and Cora quickly dying her hair back to blue, had already arrived with the real Krei in hand. *

Baymax: Suprise.

Krei: Hand over the plans! Mel.

Mel: You win, but you should know that you're helping a man who's using my surprise party invention for something much less festive!

Krei: *Takes the plans back* It's called good business!

Gogo: Sure, call it what you want. You can't sell those drones.

Honey Lemon: If they get wet there programming scrambles and they attack everyone around them!

*Krei sees the dead serious looks everyone is giving him... And then Fred slightly burps out flames from his suit.

Krei: *Annoyed but relents* Fine! I'll delay shipping until they get fixed.

*Mel removes the cloth to show his real face.*

Mel: What a nice surprise.

Krei: Yeah? How's this for a surprise?

*Krei activates the buddy guards to escort Mel outside.*

Mel: *Runs and hides behind Fred while trying to also use him as shield* Oh keep those things away from me they give me nightmares!

*Just then the door opens behind them to reveal Mizuchi.*

Cora: *Surprised(And not in a good way)* What?!

Mizuchi: Alright, Just what is going on here?

Krei: It's already taken care of-

*But Mel's constantly trying to hide behind Fred inadvertently tickles him.*

Fred: *Laughs* Not cool man! Ticklish!

*And because of Fred being ticklish, he accidentally lets out his flames which causes the emergency sprinklers to activate.*

Wasabi: Oh...that's not good.

*With the water hitting the buddy guards, there programming goes on a fritz, identifying everyone as an enemy. And they immediately cloak themselves to plan their attack.*

Fred: What are we gonna do? Let me check... No I don't have ketchup guys!

Honey Lemon: I'm on it-

*But the laser blast hits Honey Lemon before she can pull out a chem ball and entangles her in a net.*

Gogo: Woman down.

*Gogo goes to help Honey Lemon but she also gets knocked out and tied up as well.*

Wasabi: Cora and I should be able to hack into the Buddy operating system and turn those things visible!

*Wasabi and Cora rush to Krei's computer and begin to hack into the program.*

Hiro: Guys!

*The rest of the team dodge out of the way leaving Mel exposed.*

Krei: Looks like you guys have it under control, so I'll jus-

*The laser blast hits Krei which causes the billionaire to also be entangled by the net.*

Fred: *Pleased at this outcome* Alright! Nice one drone-

*But Fred is blasted and trapped by the nets as well.*

Fred: *Not pleased anymore* Agh! Bad one drones, that was a bad one!

*The invisible drone ties Wasabi and Cora in its net, preventing them from hacking into the system. Wasabi leans forward to use his chin to type*

Wasabi: Typing with your chin isn't easy!

Cora: Hey guys! I think he did it!

*The drones turn into floating Krei heads.*

Wasabi: Ahh! I think I did something else!

Baymax: the Buddy Guards are now visible, but different.

*Baymax is soon joined by Mizuchi who starts to punch the drones straight into the walls as they explode. The Krei drones zaps Hiro down.*

Hiro: Ow!

Baymax: I was alerted to the need for medical attention when you said ow- Oh no.

*The remaining Krei drones surround Baymax as they entangle the rest of him.*

Baymax: Oh no! I am unable to tend to your healthcare needs.

*The drones continue to throw nets at Baymax before Mizuchi grabs one of the drones and crushes it with his bare hands. The pressure causes the drone to glitch before bits and pieces fall down with oil oozing from its 'eyes' and mouth. The drone head then turns back into its real form as Mizuchi drops it, the drone officially dead. three of the drones are surrounding Mizuchi as the remaining ones follow Mel as he runs out the door.*

Mel: I'm outta here!

Hiro: No! He's leading them right to-

Mizuchi: Miss Cass!

*Mizuchi grabs two of them and swings them to hit the other drones and smash them to pieces. He snaps the bonds from Krei before he runs out to follow Mel...leaving the rest of the team alone.*

Wasabi: *Starts out calm, that finishes annoyed as he struggles to break free from the net* Cora. You know very well I don't mean any disrespect towards your dad, But the least he could do before he left was untie the rest of us!

*Back at the limo, Cass is showing pictures of Mochi to the driver.*

Cass: And that's Mochi sleeping on my bed. And that's Mochi sleeping on the couch. Aw and that's Mochi sleeping in a sun beam.

*Just then Mizuchi rushes to the limo and opens the door.*

Cass: *Surprised* Mizuchi? What are you-

*She then sees Mel running towards them with an army of Krei Drones.*

Cass: *Shocked and confused* What the!?

Mizuchi: No time to explain just run now!

*Mizuchi pulls Cass out and puts her over his shoulder and starts running off into the darkness as the limo drives off.*

Mel: Wait for me!

*And so the people are running for their lives from an army of Krei Drones zapping lasers at them.*

Cass: Who is he?! And why are we being chased by Alistair heads?!

Mel: *Shouting* It's a long story you're not going to like it!

Cass: and this is why I don't date.

*Mel trips and is about to be zapped before Mizuchi grabs him and puts him under his arm and continues running like hell.*

*Meanwhile, Krei is untying some of the gang while Wasabi uses his laser blade to start cutting through their nets.*

Hiro: Nice Wasabi!

*Hiro leans a little to set himself free from the bondage. After they are all finally free, Hiro and Cora get on Baymax to follow Mel and rescue their family.*

Baymax: Scanning for Aunt Cass and Papa. Scan complete.

*They fly in the direction of the people they're looking for while Mizuchi still runs with Cass and Mel in his arms.*

Mizuchi: Hold on tight Miss Cass and random stranger!

*Mizuchi picks up his pace as he takes a sharp turn to the left.*

Mel: I know things started off weird with me impersonating your date but something about being with you while we're both carried off by a giant just feels right-look out giant man!

*Mizuchi sees a car drive in front of him and so he quickly jumps up and walks over the car and back into the street.*

Cass: That's very sweet but could you not talk?

Mizuchi: Yes. Please stop talking.

*Just behind the drones are Hiro, Cora, and Baymax flying right behind them. Two of the drones fly up and zap at them, but Baymax dodges them and smashes their heads together. *

Hiro: Thank you Baymax!

*The drones soon reveal their true selves as Baymax flies in front of the drones and just behind Mizuchi. That's when Cass looks up and sees them.*

Cass: Hey! That's the big guy from Big Hero 7! Hi! Thanks for your help!

*Hiro and Cora duck behind Baymax to avoid being recognized by Cass or Mizuchi, which the tall man turns his head to see them.*

Baymax: *Waves to them* Hello.

Mel: Watch out!

*Mizuchi turns his attention as they are facing a steep slope of the street which he quickly jumps through the air before running again. The drones appear behind the three.*

Hiro: Cora look out!

*Hiro jumps at the drone and restrains it.

Baymax and Cora: Hiro!

*Baymax stops at his tracks to rescue Hiro with Cora. Hiro tries desperately to hold onto the drone without falling to the street below. The drone flies up and knocks Hiro off and sends him flying through the air before he lands back on the drone again and they zoom through the city. Soon they are heading towards the billboard of Krei, which Hiro lets go as the drone crashes but he is soon falling down fast until Cora grabs him and pulls him back onto Baymax.*

Cora: I gotcha Hiro.

Baymax: Hiro, you are safe.

Hiro: Come one, we gotta get Aunt Cass and Mizuchi.

*The three adults arrive deep in the woods where Mizuchi slows down and gently drops the two before he falls to his knees, gasping for air.*

Mizuchi: *Panting heavily* I...I think we lost them...

Cass: Yeah...Thank you Mizuchi.

*Then Mel spots the one remaining drone in front of them.*

Cass: Or not!

*Mel and Cass run to hide until she sees Mizuchi still on the ground, still trying to get some air while the drone approaches him. Cass pulls off the largest branch she could find and runs in front of Mizuchi. The drone flies through the air before it resumes its position, it leaves the drone disoriented but now more aggressive then before. Cass holds Mizuchi up but soon the three are cornered.*

Mel: If this is it, I just want you to know... My names Mel. Hi.

Cass: Yeah I don't really care.

*The drone is about zap them when Baymax's rocket fist slams the robot into a tree, destroying it for good. Cass looks up to find the drone destroyed and a lone rocket fist on the ground. Soon after the tall man stands up and looks around, wondering who saved them. Behind the trees Baymax, Cora, and Hiro are watching the whole thing. Mizuchi then grabs Mel roughly by the arms.*

Mel: Ow! Hey what did I do?

*Cora and Hiro hold Baymax down to prevent him from carrying out his coding.*

Mizuchi: Last I checked, it was you who caused those drones to go haywire and start attacking everyone and it was you who impersonated my boss. And not to mention that it was also you who put Miss Cass in danger. So until Authorities arrive, you're in my charge.

Mel: *Dejected* oh...

*Mizuchi looks at Cass as she stares to the side, frowning over this disastrous night. Mizuchi sighs before he talks.*

Mizuchi: *Second to feel dejected* I guess we both had crappy dates tonight huh?

Cass: *Third to feel dejected* Yeah... I thought this would go so well and maybe be something more...but now with all this... I just don't think so anymore...

Mizuchi: True..to be honest I never really wanted to go out with Moira in the first place.

Cass: *Confused* Then why did you?

*Cora cranes her neck to see what her Papa is going to say.*

Mizuchi: I only agreed because I wanted Cora to have a mother...someone to be there when Kaguya or I aren't around. But I couldn't stomach it...Akemi will always be the one and only woman I could ever truly give my heart to, She was truly the love and light of my life, along with my daughter.

Cass: *Feeling touched to the love and devotion Mizuchi still had for his late wife after all these years* That's very sweet Mizuchi, your wife must have been very happy to be with someone like you. Just as Cora is very lucky to have you as her father.

Mizuchi: *Smiles and laughs a little* Yeah... they're my whole world.

*Cora's eyes start to tear up but her smile shows that she is happy, for her father for trying his best and loving her mother through and through all these years. Hiro hugs his girlfriend, happy with how this resulted in the end. Finally the police arrive with Krei, running over to check on Cass while Mizuchi hands Mel to the police.*

Officer: You wanna press charges Mr. Krei?

Krei: Absolutely, throw the book at him.

Cass: Really Alistair? I mean sure he's a creepy surprise party weirdo but he told me why he did all this. You kind of used him.

Krei: Cass, Cass Cass Cass Cass Cass, you are a sweet person.. but I am still pressing charges.

Mizuchi: Hate to say it but he's kind of right. He did cause those drones to attack us and is responsible for basically committing Identity Theft.

Mel: *Trying to get away* Let me go! I don't wanna go to jail! I've heard the food is terrible!

*Mel pulls out his invisibility cloak and covers himself with it to disappear but his feet are still exposed.*

Mel: So long forever! You'll never find me! Do you hear me! Never!

Cass: We can still see your feet Mel.

Mel: How do you know they're my feet?

*Mizuchi walks over and rips the cloth off him and pushes him into the police car, where the officer slams the door.*

Mel:...W-will you come visit me in prison?

Cass: Probably not.

Mel: Can I write you?

Cass: Sure, why not.

Mel: Yes!

*The police car drives off as Mizuchi turns to the two.*

Mizuchi: And by that you mean never don't you?

Cass: Yep.

*After that night, Hiro is fixing up Baymax's arm while he puts his phone on speaker to listen to Cora with Baymax nearby.*

Cora: Looks like things went well for the both of us huh?

Hiro: Definitely, as far as I'm concerned, chances of them getting hitched are zero.

Cora: Mhmm...You know, when I heard Dad was out dating..you know...

Baymax: You felt like Papa was betraying your Mother and that you will not be in his focus anymore.

Cora: *Sighs* Yeah, what you said Baymax. I don't really need a new Mom, I have Papa and Grandmama with me...And I got the gang... Aunt Cass...you Baymax...and you Hiro. I know I've said this like a million times before, But I'm happy you're here with me babe.

Hiro: Don't worry Cora, I never get tired of hearing you say that. And... I'm happy you're with me too.

Baymax: *To Hiro* Will you find another date for Aunt Cass?

Hiro: No Way! Her personal life is her business! I don't know why I got involved in the first place!

*Just then a ladder appears with Cass climbing up nearby Hiro's window. Hiro hides the rocket fist. Which causes it to malfunction and fly up into the ceiling. Luckily Aunt Cass doesn't see it.*

Hiro: *Now remembering* Oh yeah...

Baymax: Hello Aunt Cass

Cass: Hey guys! Get your movie clothes ready, it's movie night and Cora's family is gonna join us!

*Cass continues to climb up just as the rocket fist comes falling back down and crashes right next to Hiro as Baymax pulls out a shirt that has a picture of a film reel and the words movie time.

Cora: ...I think the movie we're watching tonight is Disney's Coco. I saw it before and it's so amazing! I think you'll like it too Hiro, even if it has musical numbers.

Hiro: *Not totally believing her* Really?

Cora: *A little nervous*...If I sing one of the songs' verses for you...will you consider it?

Hiro: *Intrigued and a little excited at the idea of hearing his girlfriend sing again after listening to her last time* Alright, Go ahead, try me.

*He can hear Cora sigh as she begins to sing.*

Cora: Say that I'm crazy or call me a fool... But last night it seemed I dreamed about you~

*Hiro's eyes widen before he slowly smiles, lying down on his bed as he closes his eyes blissfully and listens to nothing but his girlfriend's beautiful singing, feeling like the luckiest man in the world.*

A.N: Cora does have a pretty voice. But if you’re wondering how it could have affected those people...well..lets say I added a special spice to this story. Love you~

Aww thank you!! I’m always happy to write something for someone so polite! This one kinda turned into a mini-epic romance. Whoops.

44. “I don’t know why I’m crying.”

It was the most inane, lowbrow recommendation Alice Cooper had ever had themisfortune of receiving in her inbox. The higher ups (Hiram’s suited ‘experts’in the big city newspaper biz, guiding her paper with their little‘suggestions’ since Lodge had bought it from Hal) had decided that the best wayto charm small town readers and keep their own numbers in the black was tointroduce a little ‘neighbours helping neighbours’ type of column.

Once a week, in the Saturday edition, advice would be offered on problemswithin the Riverdale community; not big problems like serial killer husbands―ohno, nothing reeking so hideously of personal failure and the endlesspossibilities for suburbia’s disappointments―but tiny ones. My child’s havingtrouble making friends. My neighbour’s building a fence on my side of theproperty line. My husband’s not interested any more. How do I establish goodrapport with my kid’s teacher? How can I spice things up in the bedroom? How,how, how. Help, help, help.

Alice argued. She pleaded. She practically tore her hair out. Then, shesucked it up and posted a notice a week before the suits wanted the new columnto appear, soliciting the absurd troubles of friends and strangers alike. Thesuits told her she could hire someone to be the Register’s very own Dear Abby. Ha.As if she had the money. Dear Alice would have to do.

All week long, the responses flooded in, citizens eager to have theirproblems heard and addressed. Keen to be petted and praised and handled withpatience and benevolence. Alice had to talk herself down from keeping a largebottle of wine in her filing cabinet. There were too many secrets people wanted toconfess (which she didn’t want to hear). Too many attempts made to ask foradvice yet keep control themselves (which she didn’t want to negotiate). Toomany goddamn whiners in this fucking town!

Thursday night rolled around and Alice still hadn’t made a selection, letalone started on the thoughtful, thorough, and perky reply she would beexpected to provide. She locked the door of the Register office and stared at her tired face, reflected in theglass for her against the dark backdrop of the quiet-streeted night.

The phone rang and Alice strode with something less than a briskprofessionalism back to her desk to answer. Even though she didn’t want to bepolite. Even though it was long after public hours.

“Hello?”

“Am I too late to submit my question for the new advice column?”

Alice’s eyes narrowed.

“F.P., is that you? Are you screwing with me?” She pressed the phone harderto her ear.

“Hey! I’m looking for advice, Al. Just tell me, am I too late?”

She let her gaze sweep the deserted office a few times before answering withthe greatest reluctance.

“No.”

“Ok, well you write it down if you want, or just remember it. Whatever youwant,” he repeated. Alice frowned in confusion at his earnest tone.

“Fine, F.P., but―”

“Just don’t interrupt,” he requested. Alice wanted to snap back at him, buta heavy sigh traveled down the line and she stood still and silent instead.

“Go ahead,” she urged softly, really clutching the phone now.

“There’s this girl―woman,” hecorrected himself. “Boy, I bet you’ve heard a million like this.” His laugh,rough and pure, made Alice’s heart thump a little harder. “Anyway, I knew her acouple lifetimes ago, teenage romance, you know? It was a real mess―well, itwasn’t, I was―and I screwed it up sobadly that I drove this girl―woman―awayabout as far as you can drive a person away with both of you still living inthe same small town. But I’ll spare you the details of the youth of a mixed upkid too stubborn to pick up the phone or walk a mile to their spot on theriver―his and the girl’s.”

“Woman’s,” Alice gently corrected, feeling a tremble in her chin.

“Right,” F.P. agreed, with no rebuff for her intrusion. “So she getsmarried, and I get married, and we have kids that belong to other people andwe’re still not talking because,” Alice heard the sound of F.P. scratchingfingernails through his scruff, the way he did when he was nervous or justtongue-tied, “over the years, we’ve just gotten so goddamn good at it.Eventually, neither one of us is so very married anymore, but it’s been so longthat whatever we are now is defined by how hard we’ve shoved each other way,rather than the tenderer times we had as a pair of dumb kids. Stupid,” Alice’sbreath hitched as she heard him laugh weakly, “but head over heels in love in away everybody could see.”

His voice faded into nothing and the air hung between them, Alice standingalone in her office. F.P. wherever it was F.P. went these days since he’d quitthe gang for good. Alice sniffed.

“So, what’s your question?” Without really paying it much attention, sheplucked a pen from her desk and clicked it repeatedly, trying not to look downso the water wouldn’t dribble out of her eyes.

“I wanna know…” A deep, shaky inhale. “…if you think this woman could loveme again. If it is possible, in your professional, highly respected opinion,for this woman to love me again.”

Alice’s lips parted and a sob leapfrogged up her throat. The pen clattereddown on the desk, rolling to wedge under the keyboard.

“While you’re thinking…” F.P.’s low voice requested. Alice closed her eyesand let herself be soothed by it. “…why don’t you turn off your light? I betyour eyes are tired.”

Her fingers hovered over the switch.

“I should finish…” she said, hesitating.

“You’ve been working too late, Al,” he protested.

“I have nobody to go home to,” she confessed at a whisper.

“Just turn off the light.”

Alice obeyed, blinking as her gaze moved from the switch to the office’sfront window. Eyes on the dark she could now see clearly into, Alice hung upthe phone and walked, dreamlike, to the door. She flipped the lock and F.P.walked in.

“You never told me,” she accused without the usual bite she reservedspecifically for conversations with the man before her, the man now reachingout, now taking her hands in his.

F.P. swung his head into a tilt and gave her a look.

“Took you twenty years to ask to hear what I wanted to say.”

Alice looked down at her perfect nude heels, face scrunching like a bad ideatossed into a wastepaper basket. Her tears ran, free.

“I don’t know why I’m crying,” she admitted to F.P., looking up with a wetsmile and an unconvincing shrug.

He pulled her tightly into his arms and she cried hard and happily into hisneck.

“Because you’re still that girl,” he explained, rubbing her back.

“Mixed up?” she choked out sarcastically.

“No. Mine.”

KDRAMAS:

Forest of Secrets (or "Stranger" on Netflix) Summary: Hwang Shi-Mok (Cho Seung-Woo) had brain surgery when he was a child, which caused him to lack emotion. Now, Hwang Shi-Mok works as a prosecutor. He is rational, but cold and lonely. He is also one of the only prosecutors not involved in corruption. One day, a dead body is thrown in front of him. He meets Police Lieutenant Han Yeo-Jin (Bae Doo-Na) at a murder crime scene. They work together to eradicate corruption at the prosecutor's office and solve a serial murder case. This is really good. I highly recommend it for the main duo and their relationship. Shi-Mok is extremely compelling as this extremely logical and pragmatic protagonist. He's not your typical brat with no emotions who gets a pass for being cruel with people. If he's cruel, it’s not on purpose. He's also a man who is extremely attached to doing the right thing, he's incorruptible. And next to him is Lieutenant Han, who is as equally incorruptible, smart, funny. She's the partner he needs at work and the ray of sunshine he needs in his private life. But let's be clear: she has her own story, her own character development and relationships with other people. Everything between them develops in such a natural way though, it's the cutest thing to watch them becoming good friends.  Anyway, all the twists and turns and character development make it A+.

Tunnel: Summary: In 1986, Detective Park Gwang-Ho (Choi Jin-Hyuk) desperately tries to catch a serial killer. He chases after the serial killer and goes through a tunnel. On the other side of the tunnel, Detective Park Gwang-Ho finds himself in the year 2017. The serial killer has resumed the killings that began 30 years ago. Detective Park Gwang-Ho works with Detective Kim Sun-Jae (Yoon Hyun-Min) and Professor of Criminal Psychology Shin Jae-Yi (Lee Yoo-Young) to catch the killer. My favorite kdrama so far. The main character is so compelling. You root for him and his search to find the truth and happiness. His relationship with people in the present and past play such a huge part in why this show is so good. Honestly I can't say more because spoilers but trust me: Tunnel is wonderful. And Park Gang-Ho will steal your heart.

Solomon's Perjury Summary: A male student's body is found at school. Authorities assume that the student killed himself in a fall. Other students at the school hold a trial to uncover the truth behind his death. I didn't expect this show to be good at all. In fact, I thought the summary made it seem very... wtf? But I watched the first episode while I was bored one day and I was hooked. Solomon's Perjury really impressed me. It comes with a lot of trigger warnings for bullying, depression, suicide and abuse. I'm not even kidding, it's kinda hardcore. But the show deals with it in the most gentle and mature way possible. It shows how someone can become an abuser, how cycles of abuse are sometimes created, yet never ever makes excuses for people who do abuse others. That alone is worth the recommendation. And you'll also get really nice friendships, characters who care about doing the right thing and a lot of vulnerable kids who deserve better.

Mad Dog Summary: Choi Kang-Woo is a former detective, but he now works as a veteran insurance investigator. He leads a team that attempts to reveal insurance fraud cases. The summary makes it seem like it's a formulaic show but it's not. It's about one case. Kang-Woo's wife and son died in a plane crash. The pilot of the plane was blamed and his brother got a lot of money from the assurance. Two years later, the brother finds Kang-Woo and makes him reexamine everything that happened in order to find what exactly what the plane crash. I loved this because Kang-Woo's team is basically a Leverage-like team that has become a true family. He's at the center of it and you genuinely care for him. The pilot's brother is young and arrogant and up to no good at first, so you do wonder what he really wants. The relationship between those two makes the show and it's been fantastic watching them and the Mad Dog team trying to find out what really happened with the plane. Another thing: one of the main "villains" in this show is LEGIT CHILLING. I loved him!

Bad Guys Summary: To combat rising violent crimes, the Police Chief asks Detective Oh Goo-Tak (Kim Sang-Joong) to form a team consisting of criminals. It's not exactly quality tv or even popcorn tv (it's kinda too dark for that) but it was a good enough watch for me that I'll recommend it. Basically picture a gangster, a hit man, a serial killer and a corrupted cop out for revenge bonding and solving cases together. Then picture a bigger mystery that would explain why those four are connected. Hope that sounds interesting. The only thing I didn't like was the lack of female characters, and the one they do have is kinda terrible which is frustrating at times, ngl :/

TV SHOWS

Skam Summary: The story of young teenagers and pupils on Hartvig Nissens upper secondary school in Oslo, and their troubles, scandals and everyday life. Each season is told from a different person's point of view. I'll be honest, I watched s3 only because I was told it was a beautiful coming out story and it IS. It will add a billion years to your life because of the care, gentleness and passion they have for telling this story. It's quality tv. You'll fall in love with those characters. And if you go back to other seasons like S2 you'll meet Noora who is my favorite. Be warned the show comes with trigger warnings for eating disorders and rape.

Mindhunter Summary: In the late 1970s two FBI agents expand criminal science by delving into the psychology of murder and getting uneasily close to all-too-real monsters. If you've never seen Fringe (PLEASE WATCH FRINGE!!!!!!), Mindhunter will be your introduction to the amazing, beautiful and talented Anna Torv. I would rec Mindhunter for her alone, but in the end I really enjoyed the story and other actors. I think the show benefits from a lack of proper structure (meaning it doesn't follow a specific formule, even when you think it does). The first episode is far from being the best but if you persist, you might enjoy yourself. And I liked what the show had to say about toxic masculinity. That one comes with a lot of trigger warnings for rape, torture, ...

Godless Summary: Frank Griffin, an outlaw terrorizing the 1880s American West, hunts down Roy Goode, his partner turned enemy. Roy hides out at a ranch as Frank's chase leads him to La Belle, New Mexico - a town mysteriously made up almost entirely of women. Godless spends too much time caring about characters it shouldn't care about because the real treasure of this show are the female characters who live in La Belle, a town where all the men died following a mining accident. I fell in love with Merrit Wever playing Marie Agnes. She's the sheriff's sister who lost her husband in the accident and is now trying to protect the town while having to deal with sexist expectations and her own romantic issues with her new girlfriend. I can't tell you if Godless is a typical western, I would classify it as a drama in a western-like setting? Either way I recommend it despite its flaws. Trigger warnings for rape, torture and racism.

Dark Summary: A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers as they unearth a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations. What a mindfuck. I'm not done with Dark yet, only watched 5 episodes, but as it is, it's so good???? Like genuinely amazing quality tv.

The Good Place Summary:  A woman struggles to define what it means to be good. I'm still watching S1 right now but it's so funny. I love those actors (really enjoyed Bell as Veronica Mars and Danson as George in Bored to Death). 

BOOKS

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman Summary: Seraphina by Rachel Hartman is a fantasy novel about a young woman torn between keeping a lifelong secret and protecting her kingdom and those she loves. When Seraphina begins to suspect a plot against the Ardmagar Comonot, she must lie to warn Prince Lucian of the dangers without revealing the secrets of her parentage, but her lies begin to unravel as her secrets play a large role in her suspicions. Such a beautiful book. The writing, the story, the protag... It's all good. Read it, seriously. It made me cry, but in a good way.

Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore by Matthew J. Sullivan Summary: Lydia Smith lives her life hiding in plain sight. A clerk at the Bright Ideas bookstore, she keeps a meticulously crafted existence among her beloved books, eccentric colleagues, and the BookFrogs—the lost and lonely regulars who spend every day marauding the store’s overwhelmed shelves. But when Joey Molina, a young, beguiling BookFrog, kills himself in the bookstore’s upper room, Lydia’s life comes unglued. Really enjoyed the writing and the story told. The main character was inside a house where a massacre was committed by someone they called "The Hammer Man." Years later, when she least expects it, something happens that makes her seek out the truth. I would warn for depression, suicide and gore. 

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman Summary: Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission - to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book. Really loved this series! The main character Irene is a delight, and you're basically on a wild trip all the time, with different types of characters and settings that you'll love as a fan of books and the fantasy genre. I'll say it's more accessible than something like Thursday Next.

Borderlands

Burn Out by snufflyphoenix (VH1 gang, 5k):  As Mordecai and Brick prepare to ship out to Athenas as the Crimson Raiders' B Team with Not So Tiny Tina, Lilith worries about their safety and starts to wonder how she's going to manage without them now she's gotten so used to them always being with her again. She contemplates their relationship; how it's changed since when they first met and how they're going to manage going forwards with the world turned upside down again. [This fic balances tenderness and comfort and grief so well while capturing the dynamics between these characters and I just really love it.] 

Good Omens

Before We Turn to Dust by Mintly (Ruby/Sapphire, 6k): Their days were dirt roads and endless blue sky. It would be freedom, except it wasn't. Sapphire is a quiet country storefront and Ruby dreams. [Human!AU set in a small rural town. The writing is beautiful, the relationship and yearning between Sapphire and Ruby comes through clearly, and the atmosphere shines. It’s really good and even if you’re not a human AU fan, you should check it out.]

Cleave by susan_voight, thingswithwings (Ruby/Sapphire, 8k): “Tell me a story,” Steven asks, as he shuts his eyes. Garnet, as far as she has the capacity for it, is surprised; Steven is seventeen, and while he still has a tendency towards whimsy, he hasn’t asked for this particular indulgence for years. Not since he was a lot smaller. Garnet feels a little angry at herself for not having noticed that earlier; she feels regretful, too, that she can never seem to see any part of Steven’s adulthood coming in advance. [Garnet tells Steven a story about Ruby and Sapphire and the time they had to separate for a mission. It’s absolutely lovely, a great study of their relationship and how they grow to be even stronger.]

Little Rebellions by CompletelyDifferent (gen, 58k):  Not all Pearls have the chance to run off to another planet and take up arms. Not all fights are grand and romantic. These are the little rebellions- little, but just as defiant. [A wonderful set of interconnected one-shots centered around themes of rebellion and freedom. And all the good world-building! I loved them all.]

Only Human by mllelaurel (gen, 23k):  When a malfunctioning artifact temporarily (they hope!) turns them all human, the Gems must face down a monster infestation, while dealing with the loss of their normal powers and their own sudden fragility. [This very much reads like a multi-episode arc and it’s absolutely delightful. The insecurities and vulnerabilities the Gems struggle with are ones that are always there, but they’ve been magnified and brought to the surface with their human state and it’s just really well-done.] 

Pushing By Like Hearts by mautadite (Lapis/Peridot, 13k): “Sounds like you’re really counting on that road trip magic.”(Peridot and Lapis do Midway City, and Empire City, and Plateau Ville, and all the places in between.) [Peridot and Lapis go on a road trip and it’s wonderful. Love the imagery, the development of their relationship, and the characterization.]

starwalker’s birthday by the_sockpuppet (Pearl/Garnet, 11k):  Garnet wonders if she is Rose’s replacement. Pearl wonders how Garnet could love her. [I love this fic and the way it navigates their relationship and all the insecurities they bring along to it. The focus is very much on communication and being open and working through things, and it’s very good.]

the meek shall inherit the earth by Ushio (Pearl gen, 958): "Where was her Pearl?" asks Blue Zircon. Well. She was holding the sword. [Even though this was supremely jossed, it makes for a good, poetic read.]

Waltz of the Nian by QuickYoke (Lapis/Peridot, 6k): Lapis doesn't understand fusion at heart, but she does know she's an unideal partner for it. Set after the season 3 finale. [A character study of Lapis and her relationship to fusion, and the moments when Lapis almost fuses with Peridot. It’s well-written and it handles the subject of trauma + navigating boundaries and intimacy beautifully.]

where we love is home by possibilityleft (Pearl/Garnet, 532): "You're looking at me differently now," Garnet says.Slight Pearl/Garnet. Post-regeneration for them both, Garnet and Pearl have a discussion. [Early rebellion days, a short conversation that holds a lot inside it.] 

Tangled the Series

strings by pathygen (Cassandra-centric, 19k):  The weight of the stone should be concerning, but it’s not. She’s never been unfamiliar with weight. [This fic is a fascinating exploration of what could happen with the Moonstone and the ghost. It’s also a fascinating story of becoming lost in your own anger and insecurity, how that can twist you and make you someone you’re not. It’s dark and painful and I read it in one sitting because I couldn’t tear myself away from what was going on. It’s also a slow build to the final confrontation, which is stunning and one of my favorite moments in any fics I’ve read this year.] 

The Adventure Zone 

tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by fishycorvid (Taako-centric, 28k): The funeral of one of the birds should have more attendants than this, some part of Taako thinks. But Magnus hadn’t wanted that, of course; he’d told Taako as much decades ago, just a few years after the Day of Story and Song. Taako had laughed then, told him he’d regret it when there weren’t any adoring fans weeping and tossing flowers into his grave. Taako isn’t laughing now, here in this clearing with the body that used to be his friend. (What comes after the end.) [As you might expect from the summary and warning about character death,this fic is painful. You will cry and your heart will hurt. But it’s also very well-written and a beautiful exploration of grief and having to live on and how sometimes things don’t work. Sometimes you pretend you’re fine but you’re not, you’re on a self-destructive spiral. That said, it’s also juxtaposed with some really lovely moments between Taako and his family, his friends. Highly recommend!]

landscape by januarys (gen, 854): It's the moments that define who they are, the spaces in between, and as the seasons fade into one. [A lovely stream of moments over the course of the game between Joel and Ellie.]

The Umbrella Academy

Keep Trying by pprfaith (Vanya & Klaus, 8k): At thirteen, a drunk Klaus goes wandering the mansion instead of locking himself into his room. Seventeen years down the line, he saves the world. In between, they're all just trying not to drown. (Klaus and Vanya against the world.) [This fic is lovely and healing and imagines a different world where things are still messed up because Reginald is the worst dad but there’s also support and comfort and learning how to trust.]

Try Again by pprfaith (gen, 57k):   They have outlived their father. They've managed to fix themselves. A little. Sort of. So from here on out, things should be peachy, right? [The Hargreeves get the healing and recovery they deserve, lots of good sibling dynamics, confronting what Reginald did to them, I really love this fic.]
