Navigating AP Precalculus: Overcoming Common Student Hurdles with Expert Guidance
Introduction:
Embarking on the journey through AP Precalculus can be both exhilarating and daunting for students. As they delve into advanced mathematical concepts, they often encounter various challenges that can hinder their progress. However, with the guidance of a skilled AP Precalculus tutor, these obstacles can be overcome effectively. In this article, we'll explore some of the common difficulties faced by students in AP Precalculus and how working with an experienced AP Precalculus tutor or online calculus tutor can lead to academic success.
Tumblr media
Understanding Complex Concepts:
One of the primary challenges students encounter in AP Precalculus is grasping complex mathematical concepts. From trigonometric functions to conic sections, the course material can seem overwhelming at first glance. However, with the assistance of a knowledgeable AP Precalculus tutor, students can break down these concepts into more manageable chunks. Tutors can provide personalized explanations, offer real-world applications, and present alternative problem-solving strategies to enhance understanding.
Mastering Problem-Solving Techniques:
Another obstacle students face is mastering problem-solving techniques. AP Precalculus often requires students to apply various methods and formulas to solve equations, graph functions, and analyze data. Without proper guidance, students may struggle to identify the most effective approach for different types of problems. An AP Precalculus tutor can offer valuable insight into problem-solving strategies, providing step-by-step guidance and practice exercises to reinforce learning.
Overcoming Test Anxiety:
Test anxiety is a common issue that can significantly impact student performance in AP Precalculus. The pressure of exams, quizzes, and assessments can lead to stress and apprehension, causing students to underperform even if they understand the material. Working with an AP Precalculus tutor can help alleviate test anxiety by instilling confidence and providing targeted preparation techniques. Tutors can administer practice tests, offer constructive feedback, and teach stress-reduction strategies to help students perform at their best on exams.
Managing Time Effectively:
Time management is crucial for success in AP Precalculus, as students must balance coursework, homework assignments, and exam preparation alongside their other academic and extracurricular commitments. However, many students struggle to prioritize tasks and allocate sufficient time to study effectively. An AP Precalculus tutor can assist students in developing effective time management skills, creating study schedules, and setting realistic goals to stay on track throughout the course.
Utilizing Online Resources:
In today's digital age, online resources play a vital role in supplementing traditional classroom learning. However, navigating the vast array of online resources available for AP Precalculus can be overwhelming for students. An online calculus tutor can help students identify reputable websites, instructional videos, and interactive tools tailored to their individual learning needs. Additionally, online tutors can leverage virtual whiteboards, screen-sharing capabilities, and other digital tools to facilitate remote learning sessions and enhance student engagement.
Conclusion:
Navigating AP Precalculus can be challenging, but with the support of an experienced AP Precalculus tutor or online calculus tutor, students can overcome obstacles and achieve academic success. From understanding complex concepts to mastering problem-solving techniques and managing time effectively, tutors play a crucial role in guiding students through their AP Precalculus journey. JUST ROLL WITH IT FANS!
Do you need help this finals season for math and/or science? Do you make art?
I want to help you out this finals season in exchange for some art! Think of this as a sort of trade :D
I have been a tutor at my university for two years, and have had great reviews. I can tutor all usual math levels, including calculus! Exact courses I can tutor are under the cut.
DM me and we can come up with a way to do the tutoring (likely over discord, but we can figure out something else if you prefer) and the types of art you are willing to make!
Classes: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Calculus 1 (AP Calculus AB), Calculus 2 (AP Calculus BC), Calculus 3, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Physics 1 (AP or General), Physics 2 (AP or General), Chemistry, Organic Chemistry
Bolded and italicized courses will require more prep time on my end, so I will need more of a turn around to plan a session.
Feel free to ask about a course not listed here if it's STEM related! These are just the ones I came up with on my own <3

𝟐𝟑. 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧
When the Gleasons first moved to Trespiedras, Lena had a hard time fitting in. Being the only child of an upper-middle class family, and with a very religious upbringing, she wasn’t exactly welcomed to Ridley High School with a banner and party poppers. She was, however, an exceptional student, flying under the gang’s radar by being enrolled in nearly all advanced placement classes. While others her age were in Algebra II or Precalculus, she was already taking AP Calculus. She was encouraged to take up tutoring in the school’s study center in the afternoons by a guidance counselor who patronizingly offered it up as a way to “make friends”... And friends she made.

Hi, Seo! I'm having a little bit of trouble deciding my math pathway for next year and was wondering if you could offer some advice. I recently took a summer precalculus course (it was advertised as the first semester, thus I only get credit for the first semester of the course) and we actually covered a good majority of the course's year-long curriculum despite it only being a five-week course (1/2)
I ended the course with over 100% and both the teacher and tutor for course recommended to me to just straight-up skip precalc when I return to school. This would mean I'll be taking AP Calc AB. I've just been a bit nervous at the thought of doing this because I'm going to be junior and I know how both rigorous and important this year is in HS. I really don't want to screw up and end up regretting my decisions and feeling burnt out by the end of it.
how i decided my own math pathway for school was to assess my own ability at the subject. i find math to be very difficult, and it’s something that i know i need to take my time with, so skipping something like precalc would have been out of the picture for me. however, if you feel confident in the subject and you’re good at it (which i assume you are based on your score), then move on to a class that is more fitting for you rather than staying in the same stagnant spot. hope that helps!

To the person who wanted to know about physics youtube channels: as someone who has struggled with AP Physics and has wanted to cry multiple times about it but somehow managed to be content with it now, I would suggest checking out Flipping Physics, The Organic Chemistry Tutor (this guy is saving STEM students tbh like he does physics, chemistry, precalculus, calculus..gosh what a man), and Khan Academy's physics course! They've helped me a whole lot this year! x
thank you so much, you wonderful human!!
@kiddosapiens for some reason it won’t let me @ you but i hope you see this :))

Hello eve, I'm new to your blog and I'm loving it! I kinda have a specific question... so it's my last yr in high school and my classes lined up for next semester are an elective, ap psych, ap lit, and precalc. Now here's the thing... I actually failed precalc bc of my mental health and my counselor put me back in this year. Same teacher, same period and exact same spring semester. Do you have any advice for trying again? I have like 5 months to think about switching out.
Hello Anon!
Thank you for reaching out and the nice comments about my blog! I wish I had specific advise that would suit your situation but I’ve never experience the US educational system and can only assume that AP courses are harder than regular classes. So I hope your precalculus course is not AP level and easier and I would recommend starting to look for resources that could assist you in learning, such as Khan Academy or specific channels on YouTube for pre calculus that explains concepts😊 I would also suggest looking into getting a tutor that could help you explain concepts that would suit your pace and help you while solving practice problems. All of these things you can do research on and prepare in advance, so that once you’re to start this course again you don’t feel intimidated or anxious about. I used to struggle with math in school and I decided to invest money into getting a tutor and they helped me with not only understanding concepts but also with boosting my confidence that I am able to solve math problems! This is extremely important, so I would advise you to prepare in advance! 😊 I hope these tips help you out!

I am not in hs anymore but I was about a year ago so I can help!!! a lot of high schools are different but I can tell ya what mine did
my school started around 7:40 and let out around 2:30
we had 7 classes that were 50 minutes each, with 5 minutes in between as a passing period between classrooms
it depended on the day - some school lunches were okay, others I wouldn’t go near if my life depended on it. and some teachers eat school lunch! most I knew brought their own though
we did fire drills once a month, tornado and intruder every couple months (usually I think it was every 6 weeks?)
usually teachers only teach one subject, but they might teach multiples classes on different topics within the subject! the science teacher I tutored for taught chemistry, physics, and astronomy/meteorology, for example!
this one ranges a LOT across schools, depending on the city the school is in. my school had about 2000 students, with around 450 in each grade. Individual classes had anywhere from 10-30 students (my senior year gov class had 9 kids, but my senior year English class started with over 30)
Kids typically only rode the bus to school if they lived over a mile away (I lived on the mile marker, so I could have ridden the bus, but I hated everyone on it so I walked). A lot of juniors, seniors, and some sophomores drive to school! this one will depend on what area your school is in though, mine was surrounded by downtown and residential so a lot of kids walked
I took honors and AP classes for most of high school, so my classes had specific teachers for specific subjects/topics - I had a different physics teacher junior year than chemistry in sophomore year, for example. a lot of non-honors teachers would teach a bunch of different topics in the same subject though.
for an academic honors diploma, my school required English all four years, certain math classes (geometry, algebra II, precalculus, and one higher math), three science classes, one semester of fine arts, a couple years of history/social studies, and a couple years of foreign language.
our only breaks were lunch and passing periods
okay as a non-american writing high school aus i have questions for people currently attending high school in the states (or people who graduated somewhat recently), if anyone could help me out that would be lovely!
(when replying/reblogging please mention your state as well!)
how long are you typically in school? (when does class start/when do you go home)
how long is each class period?
how edible are school lunches? do some teachers eat cafeteria lunch too?
how often do you do drills? (fire drills for example)
how many subjects does one teacher teach?
how many students are in one year? in one class? at one school? (i'm very aware this will differ)
how far do students typically travel to school? are school buses still a thing in high school? how many people drive?
does a science teacher teach all science or are there separate teachers for physics/biology/chemistry?
which classes are you required to take?
how many breaks do you get between classes?
i also have specific questions that i think only teachers could answer but since i think i won't be in much luck there i'll leave that off, this post is getting long enough as is (though if any high school teachers see this please let me know)—thanks a million to anyone who can help!!

What’s a good SAT score, I don’t know. Honestly, it depends on you! I got my SAT score back for my March 11th, 2017 SATs, and I got a 1220 out of a 1600. To me that score is adequate, but I had hoped that I would have gotten at least a 1300 something because I can get into a better university. My grades are not too hot right now, so I am depending on a standardized test that most don’t do really well on. I have some tips that can help you to prepare for it.
Now for the big questions.
Did I prepare for the SAT? Yes and no. Long story short, I go to a really extra public school, so literally, from mid-August to late February I had to work on the prerequisites for a stupid 15-page research paper in order to write the paper during those months and I had too many tests for my APs not to mention finals. The day after I turned in my research paper, the new semester started, so I had new subjects to start for the spring semester, which consisted of Precalculus and Biomedical Science. I had to be in tip-top shape fo the first two weeks of precalculus. So I had really about 5 days of actual SAT practice during the school year that I was going taking the SAT before March 11th rolled around. I went into the testing room with the intensive practice I did during the summer prior to starting junior year. The real question to be asked here is: Did I prepare for it effectively? Not really.
Things that you did? So I attended SAT classes for the Critical Writing and Reading at C2 which specializes specifically to SAT and ACT prep. I mean I am pretty good with identifying grammar mistakes really quickly and as for reading I doing pretty well. I took a practice test to see which score I fell in prior to enrolling and I fell in the 400 score group for English, and when I took their practice SAT score again I got a 620 on the English. But it’s so expensive and I felt having a class with three students with one teacher did not give much room my personal development with the teacher. If it’s so expensive why did you enroll? I moved a lot as a kid, so I never learned certain things that other students learned, namely grammar.
I can’t afford private tutoring, what do I do? That’s okay! I understand the financial burden that people would have to go through. I do not come from a privileged family by no means. But there are so many options to prepare.
1) I would first take a practice SAT under testing conditions so you can see what score you might get. Have your parents administer it for you when they are free.
2) Then identify the areas you need improvement. Do you need help math? Timing?
3) Buy a SAT skill builder book, before you start taking practice tests after an another. I have the Kaplan SAT Total Prep book. The book has exercises to improve skills that you need help in.
4) Link your PSAT scores with Kahn Academy. CollegeBoard has partnered with Kahn Academy to create an online workshop that gives you practice tests and exercises. IT’S FREE AND UNLIMITED.
5) I bought some books and I borrowed some books to practice from my local library.
6) Pay attention to the stuff you do in class. The reason why the SAT changed the test that they were administering before is because it was not aligned to most school curriculums. Especially, pay attention in math class.
What books did you use? I used books from Princeton Review, MacGraw Hill, Collegeboard, and Barrons. CollegeBoard has four free practice tests on their website that you can print out!
If you prepared so much, why are you not satisfied with your score? I didn’t prepare effectively enough during the school year, especially for the math. I didn’t use Kahn Academy as much as I should have. I mainly took one practice test after another and read the explanations after I had corrected my test. But there were other factors than just not preparing effectively. My timing during the math section.
Are you going to take it again? Yes, I will be taking it again.
So those are pretty much my tips! I hope you do well on the SAT!
