“Come on Tobias, it’s not that bad!”

“You made it look like my bed was full of spiders!”

“And it got you out of bed. Now come, we’re going to be late!” He grabbed the hyur by the wrist and laughed, pulling him along, toward their master’s workshop. They were only a bit late, and likely would arrive before their teacher had even arrived, but still. It would give them time to tidy up and perhaps start on their own works. Tobias had been speaking of a sculpture idea - something that would involve metalworking to make a frame that was beyond their current skill, but it wouldn’t hurt to make a few tests on a smaller scale.

By the time their master arrived, the neat workshop was already devolving into madness. Papers strewn about, Tobias hanging from the ceiling on a scaffolding and directing Sonja was he moved papers around and scribbled on them to prepare for a massive tile mosaic. 

“What’s this, lads?”

“Master!” The two greeted him in tandem. 

“Tobias had a great idea-”

“-oh no it was all sonja really-”

“-of a mosaic featuring, get this, dragons!”

The two went on, in unison and taking turns, and their master just smiled as he sat, listening, watching them go around, holding up bits of paper and color samples.

Onmund, Erik, Farkas, Ilia.

I briefly mentioned that Rijha sometimes babysits the Winterhold apprentices a.k.a keeping them from killing themselves by doing stupid shit. In her mind Onmund is the one she doesn’t have to worry about as much, since he’s the least chaotic of the three. Except when he’s getting himself stuck in shady deals, for fucks sake man.

Erik is someone she has a lot of sympathy for, she remembers her first few years in the temple when she wasn’t allowed to even explore the city around her. Rijha does a lot to help him on his way to becoming a adventurer, but she remind him to “visit home often, you never know when you’ll see it for the last time.”

Rijha’s most notable interaction with Farkas was in Dustman’s cairn when he was outed as a werewolf, she was just like “yeah I kinda already suspected that” “what? How?” “You smell like dog” Farkas was very upset by this revelation.

Illia did ask Rijha to help her kill Silvia, but Rijha just said “uhh yeah look I don’t kill people, so can’t help there. I will send a mercenary your way though” and that’s pretty much the extent of their interactions.

ILLEGIBLE’S TOTALLY SUBJECTIVE FAVORITE EORZEA COLLECTION DESIGNS: CASTERS

NOTE: This was originally going to be a collection where everything was in one post, but it legitimately got so big that the post couldn’t save. And doing by halvesies broke all the links. So instead, I’m going to try and separate it into smaller chunks and see if that works.

I’ve mentioned in the past, the main thing that made me start playing FFXIV properly was seeing people’s character designs. I’m still blown away by the creativity and range of approaches people bring to this game, so I’ve decided to be an absolute madwoman and break my favorites into subcategories to share with anyone curious.

And to be clear. I’m not going to do something so broad as “oh top ten in-general :3″ because that would be sensible. No, I’m going to do it for all the current combat jobs. And all the current races. And different genders within the races and combat jobs as things stand. And I’m going to make a face-focus subcategory. And there are gonna be LOTS. Because I seriously cannot understate how inspired I’ve been by this community, and after however many years I just feel the need to vomit some incredible visuals I’ve encountered at you guys lol.

ANOTHER NOTE: In an abundance of caution, I want to stress this list isn’t a value judgment on anyone but a fragment of things that blew me personally away. Looking at the DRK sections it will be immediately clear that I Illegible really like that edgy dark knight aesthetic lmao, but there are plenty of non-edgy dark knights that I also love to bits. Other people might not like edgy dark knights. Due to a combination of size and search constraints plus trying to keep gear somewhat varied, these glamours are just what wound up on this particular list of mine. I could make another list one day. Other people can make lists too that are totally different.

Character Discussion: Volke Savan from the Frith Chronicles

Who is Volke?

Volke Savan is the first person POV narrator of Shami Stovall’s Frith Chronicles. In the first book he is introduced as a determined fifteen-year-old (fifteen being the age of adulthood in his fictional world) who wants to bond with a magical creature and become an arcanist. Volke reveals early on that his mother died when he was young and his father committed murder, being banished to the mainland from Ruma Island (Volke’s home) to be punished. As a result, Volke was raised by Gravekeeper William along with a young orphan named Illia whose family was murdered by a pirate. Volke and Illia have both been shunned by the people of the Island of Ruma, Volke for having a villainous family and Illia for her missing eye and tragic story. Additionally, Gravekeeper William’s status separates him from the islanders–his home is further from the town, and his profession excludes him from certain town events.

Though Volke begins his story as an outcast, he does end up proving himself worthy to a magical creature and becoming an arcanist, as does Illia. Though Ruma Island is primarily known for its phoenixes, neither Savan child bonds with one. Instead, Illia bonds with a Rizzel–a teleporting ferret–and Volke with a Knightmare made of shadows and armor. Volke’s Knightmare, Luthair, is already a grown eldrin having bonded previously to the swashbuckler Mathis. Luthair saves Volke’s life by bonding with him, and in return Volke agrees to help Luthair figure out who killed his previous arcanist.

Personality

In the first installment of the series, Volke is poised to be a bit angsty and on edge, but he never really falls to that side of things. Instead, Volke Savan is determined, hard-working, clever, strategic, dedicated, and genuine. He tends to speak his mind, and though he occasionally engages in bouts of sarcasm, he’s not afraid to apologize for his words when he feels he’s gone too far. He’s honest where he can be, and generous with his friends. His opinion is trustworthy and his efforts are always whole-hearted. As others point out, he has the personality befitting a true knight, embodying an arcanist as he believes they should be at all times.

Story Arc + Motivations

Throughout the series, Volke’s primary motivations are noble. He begins his journey knowing that he owes Luthair the investigation into his slain first arcanist. Beyond that, he begins his apprenticeship as an arcanist, learning magic and swordplay to suit his eldrin’s style. Throughout the series, Volke’s motivations remain fairly consistent. He wants to prove himself, work hard at his magic, and protect others. He takes on responsibilities for caring for his friends, and ultimately is motivated by growth, protection, and responsibility.

Final thoughts

I Tweet this fairly frequently while reading Frith Chronicles, but Volke Savan is one of the most delightful protagonists I’ve ever encountered. I love that he has all the pieces for an angsty personality, but never falls to that side of things. He isn’t necessarily light-hearted but instead reasonable, realistic, and genuine about his circumstances. He is given appropriate opportunities to his skill and determination, befriends his fellow apprentices quite easily, and shows so much empathy and understanding towards others. Other characters can’t help but like him, even against their better wishes. He is a skilled arcanist despite the factors working against him, and regularly proves his skill and place in the Frith guild. He’s never wholly oblivious or truly blundering, but he’s also not stuck up or arrogant. Somehow, Volke manages to be everything a fantasy protagonist needs without falling into any number of the frustrating tropes a lot of fantasy protagonists unfortunately perpetuate.

So, Wynne has a very good spice tolerance. She is a pro at cricket and run fast. But she is physically weak and can't swim. But she can ice skate nicely uwu

Wynne would probably be closer friends with Moon. She’s a mermaid but can take human form. She would absolutely stronk things for Wynne or bring her things she found while in the ocean. Maybe teach her how to swim some time? She’s not the fastest but she’d love to learn cricket along with everything else human. (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧

Illia would probably be iffy; she’s also slow and fairly weak. No sports, minimal physical activities to be honest. No spice tolerance at all. 

Basil would probably be the least fitting. She loves hiking and swimming, but she’s not a strong runner and she’s not particularly strong physically either. Loves spicy food though; maybe they can be lunch buddies?

HEADCANON GAME - A TO Z (NSFW)

Featuring non-apprentice OCs ;; Daravin & Zenta, a traveling swordsman and mage that have been working out of Vesuvia.

We were doing this list in Sol’s server, so I now have all these answers. Just compiling them into a singular post.

A = Aftercare (What they’re like after sex)

Daravin will pick up his partner (assuming they're smaller then he is) and carry them to the bath.  They're taking a hot bath together. ((Unless they're on the road, then they're taking a cold river bath alsdkjfasdf)) He needs to be clean to sleep. He appreciates cuddling afterwards because he’s tired and it can be nice, but he's not going to be adamant about it.

Zenta is basically clinical about clean up and caring for them and, if she got involved, herself as well. She is surprisingly snuggly afterwards, though, and will request the other person to stay.

B = Body part (Their favourite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)

Daravin likes his shoulders a lot. He has no illusion how nice they are, not just in breadth but in the muscles from years of swinging the big ass sword. In partners, he likes hands, stomach, and hips. Especially the hips for grabbing.

Zenta could care less about herself, body is a body. But if she's got a partner with a thing about certain body parts/shapes, she might alter her form for them for a time. On others, she likes their skin. She loves smooth skin and blemished skin and freckles and scars and stretch marks and---- she could go on for hours with praise and attention.

Daravin likes creampie giving. If he's receiving, he'd rather outside for easier cleaning up. He likes making his partner come multiple times before he bothers with himself getting there.

Daravin is like... moderately experienced? He's canoodled more people than both hands together but also he's not like... poking everyone. He has had some flings while on the road but he prefers at least trying to build something at least semi-long term if they’re going to be somewhere for awhile. (No, he's not been stupid enough to try anything with Zenta.)

Zenta has had.... lots.... of time to experience all kinds of stuff.  But she likes learning and playing more. She might come off as inexperienced at first just to kind of... lull them into a false sense of security as she learns their preferences and likes and feels them out. And when she’s learned more about them and learned their boundaries and preferences? Then the gloves are off.

F = Favourite Position (This goes without saying. Will probably include a visual)

Daravin likes mating press and standing and holding them just with his sheer strength. Also partial to pinning them against the wall in basically any way.

Zenta doesn't give a shit;; she's down for whatever drives her partner up a wall.

Daravin is serious but he is easy to draw into a gentle laugh. Like he has a serious face but he can be lighthearted. This is intimate but it's not that serious. You're bumping uglies, you can't be too serious about it. 

 Zenta is not quite a goof in the normal sense but this is definitely a game for her.

H = Hair (How well groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc.)

Daravin is neatly trimmed, it's one of the things he's very strict about.  Yes carpet matches the drapes, albeit a little darker in color.

Zenta didn't think to have hair so she's hairless down there a;lkskdjfasdf

I = Intimacy (How are they during the moment, romantic aspect…)

Daravin is secretly a romantic but that doesn't always fit into their lifestyle a;sldkjf He wants to be very gentle and intimate but also? He would like to just get lost in things sometimes and emotions are not involved beyond that horny braincell.

Zenta doesn't understand intimacy as;dkljfasdf if someone read too far into what she's doing and is getting lovey and intimate she may just bluescreen for a moment trying to process what weird ritual they're instigating. ((She was just playing what are you doing stop that.))

  J = Jack Off (Masturbation headcanon)

Daravin would far rather find a partner for that, he's not really into touching himself so there's not really ever going to be a chance to have someone walk in on him for that.  Depending on who he walks in on, he may lean against the door frame and ask if they want some help.

Zenta doesn't feel urges so she doesn't touch herself.  Would absolutely ask someone if they want help with that if she walks in on them. Like matter of fact, not trying to be smooth like Daravin was.

K = Kink (One or more of their kinks)

They’re both partial to size differences.

L = Location (Favourite places to do the do)

Daravin likes having the privacy of a room but also  there's just something about pulling someone into an alcove or alleyway, something kind of public but not really, and pushing them up against a wall for round one. To make the walk back to the room more interesting.

Zenta does not care, it's all basically the same to her tbh this is 100% based on the partner's desire.

Daravin they have to be blatant about "Hey, wanna fucc?" or he'll just write off what's happening. If they’ve been together a lil while?  Show off the tummy/hip area. Daravin isn't much into big risks. He's okay to experiment if his partner wants that, but he's only okay with like. Small risks. Like public stuff. He doesn't want either of you getting hurt.

Zenta is game for basically anything.  Her partner has to be the one with sense to not get them in trouble.

S = Stamina (How many rounds can they go for, how long do they last…)

Daravin has a lot of stamina.  He's in his thirties and has decades of training with a sword, honing his physique, and traveling long distances. He only wants one or two rounds from himself but he's going to make them last and his partner is going to be cumming as many times as he can push them to.

Zenta is a monster in the light of this question a;skdjfasdgjf she can go forever.

T = Toy (Do they own toys? Do they use them? On a partner or themselves?)

Daravin doesn't own any and wouldn't bother to keep any because of traveling so much.  But if his partner has one or wants to use one during (either him using it on them or them using it on him) he'll be down for it.

Daravin is not much in teasing his partner outside of just a little messing with them in public to get them started so they're in the mood.

Zenta is a huge tease because she loves to fuck with people. It doesn't help her voice can start to drive them mad if she talks too much so she's going to tease them in basically every other way available.  All of them. Constantly. It can be for pushing their buttons until they try to toss her down or while they're doing the do and she's delaying their orgasms.

V = Volume (How loud they are, what sounds they make)

Daravin is very quiet. He's not super vocal besides some low grunts and growls and the occasional praise.

Zenta is quiet.  It's kind of unnerving if her partner has the mental space to realize it. But she's very focused on making them make lots of noise so they're usually not.

W = Wild Card (Get a random headcanon for the character of your choice)

Daravin nothing really comes to mind because he's a pretty straightforward kinda guy.  

Zenta keeps what looks like a necklace in one of her bags.  She may or may not add a jewel for each partner. Good luck seeing it though.

X = X-Ray (Let’s see what’s going on in those pants, picture or words)

I skipped this one.

Y = Yearning (How high is their sex drive?)

Daravin has I guess a moderate one? He'll match his partner but if there's a long time in between he's just eh about it.

Zenta is content with 1-3 times a week (unless there's multiple people, just one person wouldn't survive more than that a;skddjfasdf) but she won't really ache for it or go out of her way too hard for it.

Z = ZZZ (… how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)

Daravin gets into a kind of peaceful calm. He's not sleepy but he's not wired. He's very zen and winding down calm. He'll make sure they're both clean, hydrated, and snuggled up together and then he'll snap out basically immediately because he finally fully relaxed.

Zenta is like bouncing off the walls energetic afterwards because she got all hyped up and had fun. She'll make sure everything's cleaned up and good to go before she snuggles down but the act of snuggling down is like a switch and she fucking dies for the night. Like getting a sugar rush and then a hard crash.

Volke and his friends are now all apprentices under Master Zelfree. Traveling with the Frith Guild, the apprentices are gaining more ground with magic. But when visiting an island known for its griffin bonding ceremonies, the group learns about a pirate crew that intentionally inflicted the arcane plague on a grown griffin. With the name of their ship Third Abyss floating about, Volke learns that the dread pirate Calisto has inflicted direct harm on his adopted sister, Illia. For the pain caused to Illia, and to the griffins of Landin, Volke and the others hope that the Frith Guild will bring the pirates of the Third Abyss to justice. It appears, though, that Calisto has his sights set on something far more dangerous….

Final Thoughts

Stovall does it again. This book drew me in from the very beginning, and not just because I have a soft spot in my heart for Volke and the gang thanks to the first book. I like the fact that the stakes of this novel are higher in a more personal way, rather than strictly from a “powerful opponent” perspective. I enjoy seeing the ways the apprentices have been slowly developing, both personality wise and with magic. The world building continues with new concepts regarding eldrins’ true forms being introduced, and more magic is discussed and explained in such a natural integration! Also: how creepy is the concept of a pirate crew full of maneating beasts? I love it!
