H-13 Hesperides: A Post-War "Paradise"

A Vinetan facility built to assist in the construction and security of a new Nation-built Sektor after the Nation’s victory over the Empire on Vineta. Despite what the Nation says, Hesperides is slowly falling apart, as supplies and resources are failing to be delivered more often than not. Construction is slowing down, rationing is beginning to intensify, and replacement parts and new replikas are not arriving.

Reports of possible Imperial spies as well as general discontent in the population leads to the arrival of a Kolibri cadre and Falke unit to help root them out and restore proper order to the facility. Generation 6 replikas are entering mass-production, so bioresonant replika units are a new thing and for the ones sent to Hesperides, are very much a display of power. STCR-H1304 and KLBR-H1307 are assigned as the core leads of the investigation.

Okay the I can't really give you a very definitive answer on styles (will try though) so I'm gonna answer your second question first since I can actually get into it.

SO Kasuars are based off a number of characteristics. There's a couple themes I try to explore but her origin is this dipshit.

This butthead is my first signalis oc and I've been thinking of her since forever. Never did show her though. Lucky you! I don't want this to risk being a post about her so I'll keep it brief. Very long story short, she's an Ara unit who was stationed as a weapon maintainer on venita and ended up having to defend herself against an imperial raid. Well, she was great at fighting, turns out. She was quickly adopted into the military (though reluctantly, high-ups were skeptical of the Ara operating way out of her role). She was destructive and wholly efficient. The enemy simply could not kill her. She was able to shrug off near-lethal wounds and could deal out tenfold. Thing is, her persona isn't combat capable. She starts dealing with combat fatigue, paranoia, general fear, and obviously PTSD.

There's more on her but I'm going to have to stop there to actually answer your question. Remember that secret santa signalis thing that we had a bit ago? Well, I misread the instructions first time around and thought I had to have an oc. So I took the ara and turned her into Kasuar. (actually, I only finished her halfway by the time I realized ocs weren't mandatory, so I ended up finishing her later.) I chose the cassowary as a bird because when I googled "aggressive bird" it was the first result. I took the Aras brutal efficiency coupled with her near-crippling paranoia and fear and mixed in a few other influences. Beyond her zealotry, I was playing with the idea of an unchosen one, the extras and nobodies. When I made her I was thinking of extras in films. The numerous, countless soldiers that die in the background to add depth to the film. The grunts that the get speared as the hero charges on. They're faceless and nameless and little more than paper wads used to fill the cracks. I think they're authentically more interesting. That's a concept I really want to go for and explore.

They're the nameless, faceless, countless soldiers that fight and die while we focus on the main character. No chosen one, just a person. Not special, not cool, just here and she's going to die and nobody will care. Nobody will notice as another extra takes her place so she can die next. She's not a character, she's a theme, used by the author to express the brutality of the story without actually facing the consequences of killing off a significant character. When the villain is introduced, they kill a couple of grunts to show how powerful they are. Then the hero kills the villain and it's all the more impressive. Well, kasuars are the guys dying in swathes for theme, for the background brutality. She's a nobody and she fills in the blanks.

I actually chose white for Kass for two reasons; because Aras (the original kasuar) had white and white seemed like the color for cheaper, more expendable units. It just felt cheaper. Like how planes are white for fuel and cost efficiency. Kasuars are meant to be expendable. In-lore, they're meant to be support units that distract for and aid larger, more important units like schnäppers. But they were so aggressive and deadly that they were adopted as the main force. ÆON focuses on producing them quickly and cheaply. That's why they die so quick, they're meant to be single-use cannons. They aren't built to live long, just live hard.

Other than that, I'd recently finished checking out Warhammer Darktide (didn't actually get the game) and I was intrigued by the Zealot. Someone religious and absolutely batshit crazy about it. I played with it a bit and that's why kass's gestalt was a cultist. Kass's insane about her religion, ready to die because she doesn't fear the other side any more than she fears going into another room down the hall. She's insane and crazy and she knows she's guided by a goddess who's always watching her under a burning loving gaze. But that doesn't even matter. She's not here for her goddess. That's not the story. She's here to fight for her nation and die for it, her spirituality is another backdrop and that's why I like it. When she swings her blade you know she's blessed it, but you care not for the blessing, just the blade. The religiosity isn't even the main theme, her fighting is.

I spun that around and got Kasuar as we know and loathe (affectionate) her. Her physical characteristics are based of german WW1 soldiers and Helldivers.

I saw the devastator armor a bit ago and liked the idea of a front-only shield. The helm is just a helm that looks rad. She uses an axe cause I like axes and trench raiders use them. Now, (and in signalis) such a heavy weapon would be obsolete but It's a cool concept so I let it be.

And yeah. that's Kass. On to your next (first) question!

Honestly, that's really tough. I can tell you that I go online and look at art and just incorporate what I think looks good. I cannot possibly list just one person. Half my muses I don't even remember their names. I can try a bit, though. I choose things to incorporate if 1-I like it, 2- It goes with my current artstyle, and 3- i'm skilled enough. You're a pretty good example of meeting the first criteria, actually. I would go for the musculature-based painty artstyle you've got but ultimately I'm just not skilled enough to make it work.

I saw an artist use a clothlike skin instead of plating and Thought it looked cool. I incorporated that for a bit, and my fave pieces are Elster, Blauhäher (@/schwarzgeier's oc) and Bussard (@/fischlich's oc). I used that artstyle since I drew @/nixaluminos's Lammergeier (saw them use it first) and it was them that got me to use it. It didn't stick. (something funny- I drew these linked pieces but all the artists I listed are deities compared to me. You should check their own art out cause it's a lot better)

I kept the clothlike skin for the arms and shoulders, actually. The rest went back to plating.

For proportions I go for a semirealistic style. I make the head a bit bigger, and the limbs are longer. My own limbs are proportionately long so that bit's just natural for me. I copy a western style you'll find in many comic books and webcomics- At least for the face. I'm not a fan of the tight spray-on clothes they wear, and I mostly learned how to draw clothes from central-asian mangas and the like. I know this part of the response is kinda lackluster cause I didn't actually list any muses, but I can't really name 'em all. I did use this guide by @schwarzgeier-side. It's a shading guide and I seldom shade (lazy) but I learned to use a chalk brush and base a lot of my art off of hers. Sometimes I take from really old stuff, Like I recently started basing smoke off what we see in old japanese woodcarvings.

AND yeah. That's it. My horrible girls and the artstyle.

Hii. Thank you so much! And yes, they are! There’s a theory that the Valyrians descend from the Great Empire of the Dawn, which would make them (at least to some extent) related to the Golden Empire of Yi Ti.

I personally love this theory, which is why I often draw the Targaryens with forehead markings and even clothes inspired by East Asian attire! In my most recent drawing of Rhaegar & Aegon, Rhaegar is wearing a hanfu, and I’ve even drawn Daenerys in a similar style!

I am aware that the Valyrians are mostly inspired by Ancient Rome, but I love incorporating East Asian culture into their fashion as well. It makes them appear even more distinct from the other people of Westeros, and they are supposed to look like foreigners😸

Seeing Jeeto come into play in any capacity at all makes me feel like a proud parent watching their children grow. Its always wonderful like those are my emotional support middle aged fictional men. The 'moving forward' ness of zukka in liab is so nicely written. Like ive been reading liab since (almost) the beginning and it has been a ride and its starting to feel more conclusive and that is SCARY but its also nice because you write it very well and i adore the way you write trauma and the healing of it and the ups and downs and the two steps forward two steps backness. Its very lovely.

I knew ara was going to have a suicide attempt (esque situation (idk if that counts)) i called it i win.

Idc what others say ara will always be amazing. I love her character SO MUCH

i feel like you can always tell the strengths of a writer in the way they write complicated characters and the way you write ara is very telling of that. Like the fragility and also harshness used for her is very realistic and i always enjoy her parts so much.

Like her deciding to move on independant of how zuko or sokka feel about it is and regardless of whether people thinks she 'deserves it' is immaculate.

And thats a good example on your specific strengths as the author of liab (being able to handle delicate situations well, and realistically and make them very thought out and not rushed, stuff like that).

But her 'i need to start getting along with other girls' is great because like,, RHATS SO TRUE. she is genuienlly one of my favorite characters of all time, i could write essays on why i love her. Exquisite.

I think Chan would love to be called daddy regardless of it being in the bedroom or in every day life. For example you could be reading or watching a drama and Chan comes in and is like “how’s daddy’s girl?” Like not even in a sexual way either…he just loves the fact that he gets to take care of you (inside and outside of sex).

As for in the bedroom the way he wants to be called daddy depends on if he’s feeling like being a hard-dom or a soft-dom. What was their life like before going to Reborn? (were they a pokemon trainer already? Were they studying to be/working as something else?) Answered here

Why did they go specifically to Reborn for the league? (no league in their region? Interested in Reborn specifically for any reason?)What's their starter and/or ace pokemon?

This is a really good question and it has to do a bit with question 1, which I answered previously. His reason for going to the Reborn league is both personal and practical.

Starting with the practical, which has to do with why he didn't challenge the Unova league. Is his past with gang associated crime in Castelia. Through several circumstances, he got into what would be considered witness protection program after leaving the gang he was part of. (Basically, he snitched, though the situation was a bit more complex than that). As such, participating in the Unova league would inevitably end up with him having to return to Castelia at some point which he decided: "no thanks".

Now, why Reborn instead of any other league? Well for one I hc that Reborn is in the same landmass as Unova (And Orre). So it was preactical to go to Nimbasa and take a train from there. The second has to do with his mother.

See, in this AU his mother Livinia Amsel was a member of the cult of Arceus with both Solaris and Elias. In fact in this AU she was expected to be part of a Trio with them in terms of managing the cult, kinda like Elias her family served Solaris' but they were focused on record keeping and maintaining the archives of the cult. As such they grew up together.

However, she became disillusioned with where Solaris was taking the cult once they started leaning on the Team Meteor stuff. And so she left and her parents were excommunicated once they started seeing what made their daughter leave.

Anyway, she left to Unova along with other members, some who moved further to sinnoh. Which is where she met Vidar's dad Artemy. So Vidar grew up with stories about reborn and both his and Seth's (Vidar's younger brother) first pokemon were shinies from Reborn that Livinia asked an acquaintance for.

So when Seth dies, and then his mom soon afterwards, well Vidar's dad was in prison so in the end he wanted to learn more about the region his mom loved despite having left decades ago. He thought it as a way to connect with her beyond her death.

3. What's their starter and/or ace pokemon?

His first pokemon was a Reborn shiny Mankey named Hervor , and he bring with him Seth's first pokemon as well a Reborn shiny Fletchling named Hadjet. Both of which I have mentioned and elaborated on before here and here He does acquire a starter (which I differentiate from his first pokemon) which is a non-shiny Froakie named Aegir. I headcanon that since he does have pokemon with him when he arrives usually he wouldn't get a started. But since he was involved in the whole train explosion incident Ame gives one to him as a way to apologize but also cover for the league a bit.

18. Speaking of umbrals, which character(s) were they the happiest to get back? Are there any that they wish didn't come back?

Honestly Vidar was happy to get back most of the characters. Though the standouts would be Ace, because they really bonded before their betrayal of Vidar. Vidar really bonded with them in regards of being in so deep that you're continuing to protect those you care about.

The other would be Radomus and Gossip Gardevoir. He became a bit of a father figure to Vidar, and both him and Gardevoir have really helped him at times. So he was glad to have them back, also for the sake of Noel and Anna.

As for not wanting them back, I dont think any really. Even with fern at that point in the story he has kinda ended in a mutually respectful relationship with him. They're not friends no, but he doesnt wish him that fate either.

I guess the closest would be Terra, but again it's not that he didn't wish her back, it's more of a. "Oh Arceus there goes the peace and quiet" but I wouldnt say he regrets itm

What is kids parent's reaction/opinion to lance and Kuron? do they like them?

It swings between, "I am so glad that Kid found genuinely kind people to look after her and took her in" and "of all the people in universe it had to be these two idiots that raised my daughter i cant fucking believe it"

But in all honestly, yeah if i decide to not kill them, then they would genuinely like them. I think they wouldnt really trust those two at start, first because 2 strange adults hanging around their pre-teen daughter in a very dangerous sector, then because they found out one is a former paladin and the other is a clone of a paladin and the last paladin they met was kinda :/ and all this with bonus trauma of surviving in a war torn universe, being ghosted by the guy they really loved, losing their daughter, the wild west bullshit that is the cowboy sector, has made the other parent rather sceptical person in general.

But eventually they learn that Kuron and Lance genuinely do care about Kid and are also trying to survive. And they really are grateful for saving and taking care of her, even if the codependency is rather concerning. They also understand that both of them are trying their best. And they know that they are skilled smart people. They also think that they are goddamn idiots and are still angry about letting Kid drive without supervision

THE National Aquarium has fully embraced the ARA rhetoric around dolphins in captivity, saying that their own dolphin exhibit is “patronizing” and “for human entertainment”, despite the fact that they’re a scientific aquarium that is clearly leaps and bounds better than any of those cheap tourist trap dolphin swim places. The “Whale Sanctuary Project” has clearly stated on its website that they want to put an end to all wildlife in captivity, so it honestly makes me sick that National is partnering with them. They’ve turned their backs on all their colleagues in the AZA that have dolphins and slandered them. I hope they lose their AZA accreditation over this.

Thank you for this ask. I read National's statement a few weeks ago, and it made me sick to my stomach. I didn't post about it because honestly I was unsure I would be able to speak on the issue without becoming overly emotional, but you have expressed basically everything I feel.

At this point, it isn't that National is moving their dolphins to a sea pen that bothers me. We've known this for seven years, and since they're an AZA facility, I had to at least have a little faith that this was for the animals' wellbeing. I've met several trainers and veterinarians who left the National Aquarium at least in part due to their handling of the dolphin situation, but I never imagined it was this bad until now. This world-renowned aquarium is repeating activist rhetoric pretty much verbatim. They're partnering with an anti-zoo organization that works against everything they stand for as an institution. They're publicly slandering their colleagues. If I didn't know better, I would think this was a thinkpiece by PETA and not an official statement from an AZA institution. I also find it incredibly disturbing that they claim the "success" of SEA LIFE's Beluga Whale Sanctuary (and the non-existent Whale Sanctuary Project??) serves as their example, when it has been... slightly less than successful.

If I could ask National's CEO one thing, it would be this: Are the other animals in your collection not entertainment? What makes them different? What makes them "education" but your dolphins "exploitation"? Elasmobranchs, for example, are a staple of public aquaria, but they present their own host of issues. Reproductive disease, nutritional imbalances, musculoskeletal deformities. Why are you giving up on your dolphins but not them? Will you let an activist group take them next?

I'm afraid I must agree with you... they do not deserve to remain in the AZA. Not if they're going to brazenly accuse their fellow members of animal abuse while allowing anti-zoo organizations to dictate their own animals' care. I'm really, really scared of where this is going, and I would love to see the other AZA aquariums housing cetaceans (Brookfield Zoo, Disney's Epcot, Georgia Aquarium, Indianapolis Zoo, Marineland Florida, Mystic Aquarium, Shedd Aquarium, Texas State Aquarium, the SeaWorld parks, and numerous international members) release a joint statement on the issue affirming their committment to ex situ conservation, research, and public outreach. And I deeply hope none of the "10 other dolphin-holding institutions" mentioned are AZA facilities.

I wish the best to Beau, Foster, Chesapeake, Bayley, Spirit, Jade, and their caregivers, who are losing the animals to whom they've devoted their lives to a situation in which they have no say.
