Could I mayhaps know what's the name of that arachnid field guide you have 0//0 it looks really pretty and I have. A thirst for all arachnid related field guides and biology books, love those critters

The Golden Guide to Spiders and their Kin! There were lots of them, originally made in the 60's or 70's I believe, and they used to still be so common when I was a kid - still in print, and sold for just a couple dollars everywhere - I thought everybody had a few! But now they seem to be forgotten.

I had the spiders one, insects one and "seashores" one (mantis shrimps and nudibranchs!!) before I could even read, just looking at the pictures all day. As I learned to read they were how I learned concepts of taxonomy and ecology, why I knew what a "parasitoid" was in first grade and I'd talk constantly about insects that aren't really RARE, but culturally most people never heard about. These books made things like velvet ants, bolas spiders and hairy millipedes seem to me like knowledge as ordinary as dogs and cats.

That "pests of animals" page in particular is why I knew there were wingless parasitic flies, and I thought that was so cool, I was obsessed with "SHEEP KED" for my entire childhood. This bug that nobody ever heard of when I mentioned it, but was at one time deemed worthy of inclusion in an everyday field guide. And they include "duck louse" as an animal pest you're expected to encounter. Sheep and duck parasites?!.....Oh, right! When these books first published, it was still commonplace for almost everyone to have experience with farm animals. Most people at least had grandparents or aunts and uncles with a farm they might visit and help out on. Of course they would encounter sheep and duck parasites. I think they still publish these, actually, I'm sure I still saw them in Barnes and Noble only a few years ago, but it's remarkable what a different America they were made under. My old copy even recommended DDT to control bed bugs....they did eventually edit that out in newer editions.

Some of their attitudes may be outdated here and there, and they're only intended for North American wildlife, but I think the golden guides might still be perfect introductions to their topics for anyone, anywhere of any age really?? They're such well-balanced overviews so densely packed with just the most essential information about each organism.

....Did people really ever just call tree frogs "hylas?!" It's one of their genus names, but was it also used as a common name anywhere? That's a cute idea. Maybe it was, briefly, so at some point to someone there was a concept of Frog, Toad, and Hyla?

despite being bitten by a radioactive spider and adopting the moniker 'spider woman', you were deathly afraid of these eight-legged critters–it was like being scared of your own kin, in a way. you couldn't stand being around spiders themselves for too long, nor could you look nor touch them or their fat, hairy bodies; they disgusted and scared you sometimes, with those beady little eyes and those sharp fangs of theirs... kind of like your husband's.

he was an intimidating, scary man at times, though you loved him dearly and knew he was incredibly soft and mushy underneath; he also had an unprecedented sense of humor, which was tapped into when he discovered that–"you're afraid of spiders?" he asked you as you looked at him with embarrassment in your eyes, an evident fluster in your face as you nodded and muttered a 'yes'. miguel raised an eyebrow at you and gave a small hum. "what about it?" you asked him as miguel shrugged, going back to work and turning his back to you. "nothing." he murmured softly.

you sighed as you thought of what he could've been thinking about at the moment right now after finding out about your fear of spiders, the very thing that you share your DNA with. you heard miguel's footsteps behind you drawing nearer and even louder as he spoke. "why're you afraid of those little arachnids, though, they can't hurt you. one's tried, but it couldn't kill you..." he murmured as he ran his hands up and down the back of your arms, causing you to shudder and feel a heat all over your face, especially throughout your cheeks. "...so why're you so afraid of them, corazon? do they really... disturb you that much?" he asked you in a sultry voice as you gasped at his hands palming their way down to your waist, running his hands up and down at your curves with a low groan and slightly ragged breathing as he touched you.

he nuzzled his face at the crook of your neck, with you trying to find the words to answer his question, but even finding the voice to speak out those answers was difficult to do, what with him being so close to you. you had been married a little while ago, and though intimacy isn't a completely foreign topic to either of you, you could never get over how good his hands felt when roaming over every curve of your body, how warm you felt when he'd press himself against you. "mi cielo, what's wrong? why can't you answer, hmm? do you... find me disturbing as well? do you find me... scary?" he asked you in a low mutter as he gently pressed his lips against the length of your neck.

you gasped at the sudden contact, and he chuckled at your little reaction. "do you, mi esposa? do you get frightened when your big, scary husband gets all close to you? i'm half spider, mi esposa... aren't you scared of me, querida?" he asked you as you frantically shook your head at his question, with him giving you a low chuckle as he pulled you even closer and unsheathed his claws, gently running the sharp talons over the flesh of your arms and abdomen.

"spiders are scary... but you're just..." "just what, querida?" he asked you as your eyes darted to your side where miguel was creeping up and down your neck, and in the dimness of his office, something stood out as it gleamed in the dark–his fangs had been drawn out and were nearing your neck as the seconds passed. you felt the blood drain from your face as miguel neared you, his fangs threatening to sink into the flesh of your skin and... draw blood from you.

you squirmed under his touch as you tried to continue your answer, when all of a sudden, you felt something creep up your leg. you immediately casted your gaze downwards and caught a big, hairy spider crawling up your leg. that was far enough, you had to release it–and out came a loud scream from the depths of your lungs as you frantically shook the hairy beast off your lower leg. "getitoffgetitoffgetitoff!" you exclaimed as migurl burst out cackling.

he told lyla to terminate the simulation, and thus, the spider disappeared. you panted as miguel gave a small chuckle as he turned to you with a smile. "lo siento, mi amor, i just had to see your face after trying that simulation out. it seems it worked a little too well." he said as he looked at your confused and agitated face when you realized that it was all just a ruse.

you hit miguel's chest repeatedly, scolding and screaming at him that his joke was far from funny. he sighed with a big smile as he cupped your face with only two fingers and gazed at you with his irises reddening as his fangs bared when he grinned. "oh, mi vida... you're so beautiful when you're angry. a feisty little gremlin you are." he cooed to you as he crouched down to your level and brought his face even closer to yours. "maybe i should show you how scary spiders can really be, how scary this big spider you married can really be." he said in a sultry, low voice as he pulled you in for a kiss, and lightly bit your lower lip with his fangs.

as he drew a bit of blood from your lips, he cleaned up the blood that was spilling with his tongue lapping over your lower lip repeatedly. your little mewls and whimpers just motivated miguel to keep teasing and tormenting your poor lower lip... and keeping you to himself all night long, showing you just how scary a big spider like him can really be.

So mermaids are fish, straight up. Anything non-fish is not a mermaid. I do take non-fish requests! But they will either be magical creatures that are not mermaids, or they will just not be canon to my world.

There are many aquatic creatures that are not fish, and are in fact not even in the phylum chordata. "Phylum" is the first category of biology in taxonomy, which is the study of classifications.

The kingdoms of life are: animals, plants, and fungus. Within the animal kingdom, the next step of sorting is phyla. Chordata includes vertebrates (and other animals that have a spinal cord but no bones) and it does not include jellyfish, crustaceans, octopus, and lots of other things. Interestingly, it is believed that chordata and echinoderma share a common ancestor, but they are still different phyla.

Mermaids arose from a ray finned fish, in the clade Actinopterygii. They speciated from there to become the dominant life form of the oceans. Mermaids have a process that allows groups to take on a form that is analogous to a mundane fish. If that fish evolved to eat algae, the mermaid takes on those traits while still able to eat meat. This kinship is not limited to other ray-finned fish, but encompasses many vertebrates that are commonly called "fish." This includes sharks and jawless fish like hagfish. It can include lobe-finned fish like coelacanth, but does not include tetrapods. Tetrapod creatures that resemble mermaids may be centaurs. Centaurs have a completely different origin than mermaids.

Mermaids do not have kin in other phyla. If an invertebrate resembles a human, it is through another evolutionary path than "fish that mimics humans to eat them"

Where do you think Kar’niss got his sword? It’s a very nice sword. Not just some off the rack gear. And named as well—-

*drags palms over face* This effin’ SWOOOORD! It has haunted my nightmares since Kar’niss’ corpse first dumped it into my Tav’s lap. I’ve dug and dug and dug and I’m left with more questions than answers. Knowing my luck there is some obscure text or throwaway dialogue somewhere I’ve missed that might lend me a better clue. Damn you Baldur’s Gate 3, you’re too bloody big.

So, I began to write out this big blob of text going into the history of drow weaponry, hues of metals, in-game model comparisons, the stats on the damn thing, and so forth. I was out here looking like this guy for two hours.

Truth is, it’s really difficult to pinpoint the source of Kar’niss’ weapon. Not because there aren’t clues, but because Larian reuses longsword models so much that looking at the weapon alone isn’t solid enough. I almost came to the conclusion that it was an original drowcraft sword pre-1370’s DR until I discovered another sword model that was identical and not tied to drow at all. That and if it was truly a drowcraft weapon forged via faerzress methods then Larian would’ve changed the rules on how they worked. Which makes sense. It’s a fun bit of lore, but it would be a pain in the ass for a game mechanic. Who wants their badass weapons destroyed or losing all magical abilities when you leave the Underdark?

“ME ME ME,” said no one.

The only thing I can say for certain is that it is a drow forged weapon because it carries a buff that only activates if a drow elf is wielding it. It also seems to be perfect for a drider since it also has ensnaring strands, an attack that does 1d10 slashing damage and possibly enwebs the target. This works in conjunction with the added 1d4 poison damage to restrained targets. The swords description may hold the best clue of its origin:

“The trauma of becoming a drider is quickly set aside with a cold arachnid dispassion. This sword follows that disturbing trend - a replenishing poison gland is built within, deployed only against trapped opponents.”

This description and the name, Cruel Sting, lead me to believe the weapon...was a gift.

Imagine Kar’niss fresh from his transformation. He’s dazed, in pain, lost and alone. He’s been exiled from the only home he’s ever known and has lost favor with the Goddess he’s worshiped from birth. His future is uncertain and how long he has left to live is even less so. His mind is shattered, the incoherent thoughts his only remaining company. He hears frantic footsteps approaching from behind him and his already broken heart shrivels more. His kin have come to finish the job, to put him down, so enraged by the offense he caused Lolth. Weak and struggling to keep himself upright he turns to make a last stand, to show strength in his final moments, to die with some level of honor.

His resolve melts into confusion when he sees who is sprinting toward him. The individual would be unknown to us, but well known to him. A childhood friend? A lover? A confidant? Or perhaps someone he fought alongside faithfully for many years. Regardless of whom has arrived a strong bond is present between them. They approach and peer at what Kar’niss has become. Their face twists, a brief flash of sorrow betraying their features. Yet they cannot let it remain, nor are they able to stay with him for too long. Instead, they unsheathe a sword they brought with them, hurriedly holding it up to Kar’niss. Naturally he flinches at first, expecting the blade to pierce his flesh. The strike never comes, rather the new comer pushes it toward him with urgency, expecting him to take it.

Hesitantly Kar’niss complies, taking the hilt in hand and admiring the beautiful drow craftsmanship. He frowns, his eyes lingering on the one who brought it to him, too stunned to speak.

“It will protect you, Kar’niss,” they said in a hushed tone. “...Goodbye, and good luck.”

Kar’niss could do no more than stand there as their former companion darted off quick as a shot, not willing to run further risk of being seen with the newly transformed abomination. He clutched the sword close to him, the last connection he had to the life he lived before. It would forever act as a reminder of everything he has lost, the cruelest sting of them all.

i have another suggestion for the holes on rom's sides : spiracles ! they're openings that let many arthropods breathe, i am not sure about the few spiders that have them but for insects they're on the sides of their bodies just like that

Hey! This is an interesting idea! I will admit, although I love taking pictures of bugs, looking at bugs, holding bugs and cherishing bugs.. I haven't studied the bugs, so this information was new for me!!

I suggested that the reason why Altar of Grief form, despite being implied as Rom, has legs is because past that point Rom 'grew up' and dropped her former legs with only holes remaining! And I also asked @herpsandbirds (all my cool creatures reblogs come from this blog, check them out) regarding insects and arachnids, here is what they said:

I can't really tell whether Rom has anything like this from her view from below, since book lung would be located below this piece of body where legs protrude from.. which for her is her whole body?

However, something like book lung DOES seem to be present on Nightmare Apostles and Children of Rom!

I have a feeling that 'intention' might be here, but because Rom's type of spiders are so unusual and asymmetrical it is placed without the same relevance to legs! So, Rom might have it too, just less plainly so?

As for tracheae, I couldn't find any image showing Harvestmen having spiracles though, like I really don't know what I do wrong here fhsdh So I can't confirm or deny. Like I need to SEE for myself but Google is trolling me apparently :/ I found this, though:

Scorpions, for example, have several breathing holes placed below like this! With Rom the big ones go more on the side as you can see, but some still show below, and with Romlings too!

With caterpillars they do go on the sides! And yes, I brought caterpillars in because Rom IS sorta similar to one! There is an interesting bit about the 'spider' monsters and Kin in general - they are connected with Amygdalae!

Gardens of Eyes resemble Amygdalae and Nightmare Apostles serve them as we learn from Patches! Rom is like, a perfect Kin, combining all three 'branches' of eldrich; Sea because she was blessed by Kos and has tentacle tails, Star because she shoots meteorites and connection with Ebrietas and this arachnid one because of her legs and title! I feel maybe the fact spider one is 'dominant' is because you only deal with those if you sell your soul, and it was something she did, sacrificing herself for either research or humanity or both! But in any case, I am just saying maybe resemblance with a caterpillar is not accidental and she could, in theory, ascend further and become a butterfly? x) So that's why there is a hint of wings in these Kin! 'Ebrietas' is also a kind of a butterfly!

ALSO!!!

Funny enough, but Amygdalae DO also breathe in and out through a hole in the ribcage! Anatomically it is not where a book lung would be, but I thought it was relevant to the topic! Again, maybe we have to shift the anatomy of actual arachnids around a bit because these creatures were once humans (or in case of Amygdalae, resemble humans)!

So yeeeah.. In the conclusion, I now think it does work better if Rom shifted onto a different kind of arthropod upon ascension, whereas her "real" petrified body remained spider-exclusive. Due to maybe the specifics of WHY she left the "real" world! Also guys if anyone knows anything else please bring in up, this is deadass the first time I am learning all this information!!

Here's some pictures I took in the summer when I went to an animal sanctuary !

Meerkats, also known by their Latin binomial Suricata suricatta, are a species of mongoose well-known for their small stature and cute behaviour. They are native to the south of Africa, and they live in the grasslands and deserts.

Meerkats are omnivores that eat a wide variety of foods such as fruits, insects, eggs, arachnids, plants, and even small reptiles and birds. They take it in turns to go out and search for food in the daytime to bring back to the nest and eat.

These little guys are social animals who live in groups (known as mobs) of up to 40 individuals in underground burrows. Each member plays its part in the community taking care of the young, gathering food, and staying alert for predators and potential threats. That's what they're doing when they stand up on their hindlegs like in the pictures I took !! If they notice any danger, they will squeal loudly to warn the others.

This is an interesting example of altruistic behaviour since the noise may cause the individual that made it to be targeted by the predator but it allows the rest of the mob to hide and therefore survive. Evolutionarily, this does not seem to make sense for the individual, as it would reduce its chance of staying alive compared to running and hiding without making any noise. But an explanation may be that every individual in a mob is usually related and therefore genetically similar to each other, so by sacrificing its own life to save its kin, this meerkat is allowing its genes to be passed on to the next generation through the other members of the mob.
