Got this in the mail today! Congrats to the National Portrait Gallery and Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge for the poignant initiative! Besides documenting the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom, the project brings a nation together in a spirit of resilience and unity in braving the pandemic. Proceeds from book sale go to the National Portrait Gallery and a mental health charity Mind. We too did a similar initiative in Singapore. The Cure’ book was written by a little princess, Nuha and all proceeds went to a charity supporting migrant workers affected by COVID-19. Let’s do our part in overcoming this pandemic. Pre Helang Books days... Tadaffee Taksen, the father of the two boys in the second photograph was my colleague. In fact, we later started a bespoke design company together called ‘Pereka’ or Designers. The icon for ‘Pereka’ was the mousedeer or kancil of the Malay fable ‘Hikayat Sang Kancil’. Unfortunately, Tadaffee left for Shanghai while I left for the USA and ‘Pereka’ was shelved. Before leaving, Tadaffee designed seven (7) postcards of Gedung Kuning (coincidentally, Kampong Gelam’s postal code was Singapore 7). We kept in touch all those years, only to find out recently that we are related through our great-grandfathers who lived in Kampong Gelam. Talk about six degrees of separation. Small world indeed! To celebrate Gedung Kuning book 10th anniversary, a revised edition will be published this year. 헐~~ Hull! I was doing some spring cleaning and came across 'inex magazine' (2013, vol 20) where my first book 'Gedung Kuning; Memories of a Malay Childhood' was featured. I had forgotten about that interview done by a Korean writer. I think that this article is my first article published by a non-English and non-Malay media channel in Singapore and overseas. Who would have thought... Anyway, I remember asking my Korean friend whom I had met at the United Nations to help me translate the article (not sure if I ever got the translated text from her). . 대박!
