Shaamiela’s Kitchen - Cape Malay Cooking Class

Our Bo-Kaap guide brought us to Atlas Trading Company, a local grocery store packed with herbs/spices of all colors and scrumptious smells of Middle Eastern cooking. She told us dozens of remedies, what every spice can cure, and the ingredients to make a traditional Cape Malay curry. We got to sample some snacks packed with flavor. I was inspired to come back and test these spices out in the kitchen. 

To finish off our tour of Bo-Kaap, a smaller group of us took a cooking class in a local’s home! Shaamiela is a friend of Remote Year, and we were welcomed into her home with warm smiles and delicious smells.

Shaamiela was born and raised in Bo-Kaap and her family was an initiate part of painting the houses all their different colours. She was a teacher at the local Bo-Kaap school for many years and then went on to become the Principal of the school for many more years and is now retired. Shaamiela welcomes tour groups into her house regularly for this intimate cooking experience! We will be making an array of traditional Cape Malay dishes - so come hungry. -RY

Shaamiela’s Cape Malay Chicken Curry consists of chicken, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, garlic, ginger, coriander, cumin, crushed chilies, and chili powder (I won’t give out her recipe but will try to recreate it for you if you ask! :) ). We watched her mix the ingredients into a delicious curry, and also learned to make roti bread and vegetable samosas (I folded the ones pictured, pretty good eh?!). Lunch was delicious, and ended with a traditional Cape Malay dessert, the koeksister (fried dough with glaze), which Shaamiela told us is usually eaten on Sundays with a cup of coffee. Yum! 

An added treat: Shaamiela’s twin 2-year old granddaughters came to visit. They had just started school and she was so proud. Adorable.

‘Every Face tells a different story,’ (2011), Bo-Kaap, Nur al-Islam Mosque, By Sami Fortune...This is a picture of a wedding ceremony taking place in the second oldest mosque in South Africa at the heart of the Cape Muslim community in the Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town.

The photograph is anchored at the center with a handshake between the groom and the Imam or Muslim prayer leader conducting the ceremony. The groom stairs intently symbolizing the importance of the ceremony and perhaps he is staring into the future and imagining his new life. To his right can be seen the recoding lights of a wireless microphone with both red and green showing also symbolizing the precieved uncertainty at the outcome of this important life event.

To the grooms right can be found a guest with a look full of both emotion and concentration at what is unfolding before him. To his right the grooms English uncle (wearing the colorful pocodot tie) is truly fascinated, having never attended a ceremony of this kind.

On his right wearing an expression of concern and utter seriousness is the bride's father, ensuring the sincerity and legitimacy of the ceremony unfolding before his eyes.

Behind the Grooms cousin places his neck at almost 45 degrees to pear over the shoulders of the guests to see the important event. To his right however a younger boy another cousin looks in the same direction.
