Best Pokémon Villains Tournament- Individuals Bracket- Round 3: Match 6
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Matches don't get more personal than this! Father and son go head to head to find out which of the two is the people's preferred Cipher villain!
Greevil beat the Orre regional head of Cipher last Round, pulling rank as the overall grandmaster of the organisation. It was a clear 40:60 split, and while he's going up against his son, he isn't one to show mercy, and he'll be wanting to repeat the feat!
Meanwhile, Ardos also managed to defeat one of his Cipher colleagues, defeating the intimidating Dakim by an almost identical margin! In fact, Ardos earned only 3 less votes last Round than his father, making this possibly the most even matchup we'll see. Can the young prove himself to the old?

I never really understood the complaint that Orre lost its edge in XD. I always found it much darker than Colosseum, despite Colo having an ex-criminal lead character and grittier locales.
XD starts off with two probable homicides (the SS Libra was reported missing days later, and the sailors are never mentioned to have been found), and given the size of the SS Libra and the amount of Pokémon onboard to take care of, it's unlikely they were the only crew aboard. (I don't think we've had any villain teams that had implicitly killed humans until the Flare arc in Masters. Not for lack of trying with several villains tho.)

They corrupted a box Legendary so thoroughly that its appearance changed and it was supposedly unpurifiable. Whatever research Ein did into creating Shadow Pokémon, Lovrina was perfecting it.
The entire town of Phenac, including the Gym Leader and mayor, were locked underground and impersonated. It's so creepy when you're reading the mayor's letter about how their town is Cipher's next target, and one of Cipher's agents creeps up right behind you.

Fucking Ardos. Dude advises mass murder long before the likes of Ghetsis, and while his father, the main villain and supposedly the brains behind Cipher, initially has reservations considering how many subordinates would be killed, is coerced into going along with it until Eldes shows up.

Despite this, Ardos gets off a free man, and basically tells you he's sending Cipher battle squads after you (sounds a bit like a hit on the player) in his postgame letter to the player if you defeat him in the Orre Colosseum. Dude seemed primed to go another round, Cipher is still apparently active.
It's not even the first time you've been threatened with murder in that game. Gorigan was initially going to blow up the Cipher Key Lair with us in it, but was stopped by Greevil.
Like, Orre's been cleaned up some and we're back to having a child protagonist, but some of the actions Cipher carries out feel a fair bit more ruthless.

I have to say, this massive organized crime family drama ended a lot more neatly than I imagined it would.

This thought largely occurred to me while formulating an AU sideblog thingamajig,
But the Pokemon World/multiverse is lucky that Rainbow Rocket Giovanni hasn't yet stumbled upon a vengeance-driven Ardos who would gladly work to rebuild Cipher.

Granted, Snattle's placement is debatable here. He likes blaming Gorgor and Lov instead of taking responsibility, but I read this combination as "I'm having fun with my politician gig because my perfect plans worked out", so it may fit him after all :)

Nascour and Venus are psycho stalkers and I cannot be convinced otherwise. Allegedly, in my personal opinion.

Best Pokémon Villains Tournament- Individuals Bracket- Round 2: Match 12
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have another Cipher head-to-head for our second match of the day, this time featuring Admins fought in Colosseum and XD respectively!
Dakim, the hulking muscle of the Cipher Admin staff, is a fierce man and threatening battler! His role in Cipher's Shadow Pokémon plot is simple- as an enforcer. He uses both his Pokémon's strength and his own to get what he wants, and he's especially threatening when he's angry. His approach his headstrong, but not without thought, as is demonstrated with his battling style- favouring the scary combo of Protect and Earthquake, having either moves or both on all but one of his non-Shadow Pokémon across every battle against him! And that Shadow Pokémon? It's none other than Entei, the fearsome red beast to match Dakim himself. You may want to vote for him, you don't want to be on this guy's bad side!
Ardos won't take it lying down though, he may be the most ruthless and amoral member of Cipher- and that's a high bar! He's first introduced as his father's bodyguard, alongside his brother Eldes, before later being revealed as a member of Cipher, and he's especially loyal to the cause. After doing everything he can to stop you, and even once the head of Cipher is beaten, Ardos still wants to push on with Cipher's mission- even suggesting blowing up their hideout that contains all their equipment and many, many loyal grunts and scientists! Come the post-game, and it's implied that Ardos is still pursuing Cipher's mission, having possibly taken control of the remnants of the organisation himself. Unfortunately, a third Orre game never came to be, and we didn't get to see a definitive conclusion to Ardos' story, but he still makes an impact. Will you be voting him through to next Round?
