Must be my first post-Nervebreakers outfit, The Jungle Heirs at a Street Dance. Me doing my best Bryan Ferry that a punkabilly boy could do. There's Charles Daniel on bass & NCM's David Hill leaning on the doorpost at Curtis Hawkins' record store, Stacks 'O Tracks on lower Greenville Avenue in Big D around 1981. Heading right from David is Curtis' sister, Jolinda, then the late Pope Coleman, one of my many friends who passed away during the pandemic years from cardiac issues. Next to Pope is Erin Arthur AKA Superman's Girlfriend. That's Curtis' ex, Marsha, crouching down shooting a photo of us. He thinks Dena shot this particular photo. The band members not shown were Danny Whittington on guitar & Carl Giesecke, also from The Nervebreakers, on drums.

The Verich Family (and Cipher under them) are funded by the family's energy company - initially building it's wealth from the resources of Orre and helping found the resettlement efforts of the region. The company (Enerich) has footed the bill for much of the region's infrastructure, and has profited off the citizens and organizations that call it home

When it comes to villains,it’s always about the “broken” or “pure evil”, but never…
THE OLD MEN VILLIANS THAT CAN EASILY BE YOUR GRANDFATHER WHO APPEAR COOL AND CHARMING AND/OR SWEET AND HELPFUL BUT TURN OUT TO BE POWERFUL ALL-MIGHTY BIG BADS AND HAVE CRAZY EYES OR CAN GIVE THEMSELVES CRAZY EYES AT WILL

I never really understood the complaint that Orre lost its edge in XD. I always found it much darker than Colosseum, despite Colo having an ex-criminal lead character and grittier locales.
XD starts off with two probable homicides (the SS Libra was reported missing days later, and the sailors are never mentioned to have been found), and given the size of the SS Libra and the amount of Pokémon onboard to take care of, it's unlikely they were the only crew aboard. (I don't think we've had any villain teams that had implicitly killed humans until the Flare arc in Masters. Not for lack of trying with several villains tho.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They corrupted a box Legendary so thoroughly that its appearance changed and it was supposedly unpurifiable. Whatever research Ein did into creating Shadow Pokémon, Lovrina was perfecting it.
The entire town of Phenac, including the Gym Leader and mayor, were locked underground and impersonated. It's so creepy when you're reading the mayor's letter about how their town is Cipher's next target, and one of Cipher's agents creeps up right behind you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fucking Ardos. Dude advises mass murder long before the likes of Ghetsis, and while his father, the main villain and supposedly the brains behind Cipher, initially has reservations considering how many subordinates would be killed, is coerced into going along with it until Eldes shows up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Despite this, Ardos gets off a free man, and basically tells you he's sending Cipher battle squads after you (sounds a bit like a hit on the player) in his postgame letter to the player if you defeat him in the Orre Colosseum. Dude seemed primed to go another round, Cipher is still apparently active.
It's not even the first time you've been threatened with murder in that game. Gorigan was initially going to blow up the Cipher Key Lair with us in it, but was stopped by Greevil.
Like, Orre's been cleaned up some and we're back to having a child protagonist, but some of the actions Cipher carries out feel a fair bit more ruthless.

Excellent! Firstly, we must look a the symptoms. Heightened aggression, a tendency to ignore commands, and a slight discoloration. Discoloration, or to put it another way, anti-coloration. This is an obvious clue, telling us to look into the colors that are most against each other. As anyone will tell you, the two most opposing colors are black and white. Black and white. Blueberry Academy is in Unova. But wait, what about blue? Isn't that a clue? Hold onto that, it'll come in handy later. Naturally the first thing any Unovan will think regarding the colors black and white are the Subway Bosses Ingo and Emmet. Of course, the two of them have a good sibling relationship, thus this cannot be the answer. This brings us to the second thing any Unovan would think of. Reshiram and Zekrom. (Pictured below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, we could look at how they represent truth and ideals and etcetra. BUT TRUTH AND IDEALS ARE MERELY A DISTRACTION FROM THE ULTIMATE CONCLUSION! Thus we look at their categories. The Vast White Pokemon and the Deep Dark Pokemon. Vast. Dark. Do you know what else is vast and dark? Caves. And as anyone who has been in any cave that isn't in Paldea will tell you, caves are full of Zubats. (Pictured below)
Tumblr media
And we know we are on the right track as Zubats are blue. Just like a Blueberry! This is why I told you to remember blue. Now then, Zubat evolves into Golbat and then Crobat. Crobat have two pairs of wings. Two pairs. To par? Golf. We must look into a Golfer (Pictured below) for our next clue!
Tumblr media
There is a golfer in Alola in possession of three Minior (Pictured below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was obviously a coded message! But what could it mean? Blue, red, yellow. Red rhymes with and. Sort of. Anyway, this leaves us with blue and yellow. Blue and yellow make green! Green as in grass. The grass type! Do you know what kind of pokemon is a grass type? Lots of them, it's very common. Thus we need to narrow it down via process of elimination. Blueberry Academy is one of the few places Terastalization can occur. The other two are Paldea and Kitakami. Paldea is already elimentated since Zubats don't live there. Lucky. Thus this leaves Kitakami. The most notable grass type there? Ogerpon! (Pictured below.)
Tumblr media
...this was the only photo I had on file, okay? Moving on. Ogerpon. O! Orre! But where to from here? It's simple. You see those sleeves on Ogerpon? Sleeves go on arms. Albeit in this case they technically don't go on anything since Ogerpon doesn't have any arms. But that's not relevant. Do you know what also goes on an arm? A Snag Machine (Pictured below.)
Tumblr media
The Snag Machine was used by Team Snagem, who clearly aren't very creative in names. Obviously.
They lost around the same time their headquarters in Eclo Canyon (Pictured below) blew up.
Tumblr media
The perpetrator of this? Unknown. Unknown? Or perhaps... Unown (Pictured below).
Tumblr media
Unown have been theorized to be partly behind the development of the written language. They also seem to communicate with each psychically.
Secret? Language? A secret language.
A Cipher! Cipher is a mysterious criminal organization that sought to take over the world, and was believed to have gone defunct shortly after its leader Greevil surrendered himself to the police.
The files don't say which police force he surrendered to, so I have no idea where he is. But what I do know is that he had children. Twins. One has left Cipher behind for good. But the other? The other swore to one day rebuild Cipher back up again. The conclusion. Cipher has been rebuilt from the ground up and were in fact responsible for the fall of Team Snagem as they reclaimed their stolen Snag Machine, which was originally a creation of Cipher. They seek to recreate Shadow Pokemon! These disturbances at Blueberry are merely the result of them conducting their research on innocent Pokemon to reconstruct the lost data and rebuild from the ground up! Now, I know what you're thinking. That's right! They clearly intend on performing the shadowification procedure on Ogerpon in an attempt to recreate the success of Shadow Lugia (Pictured below)!
Tumblr media
Once they have Shadow Ogerpon, they will move Shadow Ogerpon disguised as a statue of Reshiram and Zekrom to Orre via their secret network of smugglers disguised as golfers!
Then they will release a large swarm of Zubats into Paldean Caves in order to distract the global authorities with the resulting enviromental crisis while they begin amassing an army of Shadow Pokemon!
How fiendishly clever.
Unfortunately for them, I will not be fooled by such deceptions.
I… right…
Yeah, sure…
Cypher’s gonna invade with an army of shadow Pokemon, disguised as golfers, using Zubats as a distraction…
How… villainous…

There are many reasons why, for me, Pokémon Colosseum for the Nintendo Gamecube is superior to its sequel Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. But one of the biggest reasons is this:
Tumblr media
Right there, at the end of Colosseum, Evice says in no uncertain terms that he is the boss of Cipher and that he will rule the world. And you buy it; there is zero reason to doubt him.
Yet then in Gale of Darkness, what happens? It's retconned that Cipher is actually a global organization and that Evice was just the boss of its Orre Region faction, and that his defeat did nothing to impede Cipher's plans other than force the real boss, Mr. Verich aka Greevil, to come to Orre and attend to matters personally. And that is an absolute load of Tauros shit.
If what Gale of Darkness posits was true, then why would Evice say that he was going to rule the world? If he was just working for Greevil, then he'd be working so that Greevil would rule the world. And if Cipher is a global organization, then why do we literally never hear about anything they do that isn't in the Orre Region? In both games it appears that Orre is the end-all, be-all for Cipher's plans; they can't conquer the world unless they first conquer Orre, which means that its creator and boss being someone like Evice, who holds a position of power in Orre, makes perfect logical sense. Imagine if Giovanni didn't hail from Kanto or if Ghetsis wasn't from Unova, it would make their fixations on those regions seem strange.
And more to the point, I fucking hate Happy Ending Overrides like this; the kind that outright retcons a previous victory to the point that it means nothing. In order to up the stakes, Gale of Darkness' story claims that Wes didn't actually thwart shit, he only created a brief delay, and that his biggest contribution was setting the stage in ways for Michael to actually take down Cipher. Wes, a character who was specifically tied to Cipher's conspiracy, doesn't bring an end to it; this new kid with no connection to Cipher or the events of Colosseum at all does.
There was no reason for this. The game could have just had Cipher, founded and run by Evice, truly defeated in Colosseum and this new asshole from overseas, Greevil, gathering its remnants and creating a new incarnation of it for his own purposes. I don't mind those kinds of Happy Ending Overrides since it's evil striking back after having been defeated rather than evil revealing it was never truly defeated at all; heck, Pokémon has done them before with Team Rocket and Team Plasma! Gale of Darkness not doing it in a misguided attempt to give itself more weight only did the opposite and made it feel less significant than its predecessor.

“For a prisoner, you're rather hard-nosed, I must say. But it just wouldn't do to have those tapes broadcast to the public. I have been promised the position of Orre's Governor by none other than Master Greevil. So, you must understand, it wouldn't do to have it be known that I have muzzled the citizens of Phenac. If that got out, imagine what harm it would bring to my pristine political record. Now, hand over the videotapes, please.”
More XD with Snattle, my constant sticking point in all my XD playthroughs. Never made it past the guy, maybe someday hehe.

A post on Reddit from some time ago suggested a theory that Eldes is actually Michael's father and the reason why he is so insistent on Michael consider his actions at MT. Battle is because he doesn't want him to go down a similar path. Nobody told Michael the identity of his father out of fear he might be doubtful about taking down Cipher because that would make Greevil his grandfather. Out of all the theories this sounds the most plausible given the genetics of hair and some dynamics. Thinking about it...Eldes is calm and collected, considerate of others, somewhat like Michael and he has Red hair, he also uses a Salamance, the Pokémon that Michael uses on the first simulation. Ardos is impulsive and a firecracker despite appearing loyal, willing to do anything to the point of appearing near chaotic kinda like Jovi? Maybe too many assumptions but they make a bit of sense.

Disclaimer: The following screens are from the mod XG: NeXt Gen, where the dialogue is unchanged but the characters names are no longer in all caps:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These screenshots are all the mentions of Michael's dad and his lore. All notion of the Verich Brothers or some other Cipher admin being Michael's father is vastly out-gunned by the game's heavily implied notion of the contrary. There is no evidence to suggest Eldes, nor any other known Cipher Admin, is Michael's dad. His father passed away long ago and Michael canonically suffered depression to an extent as a result. By the looks of it, his dad was a scientist, a friend of Krane, Lily's chosen lover, a skilled battler, and a real family guy. He even gave Michael his first Pokemon, Eevee.
Tumblr media
But don't take my word for it, you can take the game's. People often miss these details about Michael's dad in their playthroughs. Details like these that give Orre that extra dimension, proof of a certain kind of love not found in modern Pokémon games. If you need to disprove someone's theory on Michael's dad, a theory akin to that infamous "Wally being related to N cause of hair color" image, feel free to link them to this master post or use this as a reference point for future theories.
