From 1796 to 1837 he had a number fo different ranks but was the regimental colonel of the 91st (Argyllshire Highalnders) Regiment of Foot. He also served as a Member of Parliament from 1809 to 1818 general election for Ayr Burghs in Ayrshire for the Whig party.

Blandford House Newcastle

Thank you for answering! Then I hope you are right about everything haha. I have already asked you about where would you like to see them go, and you said Italy if I remember right. Italy, Spain, Portugal? But if they were to make three tours next year, to where you think they will go? And (sorry this is long), which patronages from the Queen and the DoE do you see Kate taking on? And William?
I want them to go to South America and China/Japan.. it would be a loonnnngggg shot but Russia would also be an interesting tour.. they also have never done a Caribbean tour.. ohh a family visit to Kenya and some other African countries would be amazing
as far as patronages.. I need Kate to take on GOSH, The Royal Photographic Society, Royal Academy of Dance, etc
William.. Guy’s & St. Thomas’ NHS, The British Chambers of Commerce, the Balaklava Company (formerly the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - he’s currently patron of The Thin Red Line Appeal which is an appeal for the regimental museum for the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders)

Do you think it would be better if royals had fewer patronages and spend more time focusing on them? Or do you think it’s okay how it is now, having a broad range that includes more places but with more sporadic visits/event attendance?
I personally can see benefits to both. I think a middle ground is good. Maybe less than they have now in the senior generations but more than the younger ones have. And some of them would be more sporadic and some would be longer. There are other royal families who basically take on a contract with the charities so they represent them for a fixed time period and then review and I think that’s a good balance. Also taking on more fixed length campaigns that could be part of their work for a few years but can then end and be replaced by something else. So for example William is patron of the Thin Red Line Appeal which is a fundraising campaign from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders’ Museum. That is a £4 million redevelopment campaign so when they’ve raised the £4 million William doesn’t have to continue to be a patron. They can be more in depth but for a limited period of time. I also think the way they’re involved could stand to be different. Like I talk a lot about the issues with the Royal Foundation but there’s a lot of royals forcing things on to the charity sector and not asking us what’s beneficial for us. They do have the potential to make a huge difference but with that comes the responsibility of not just doing whatever they want and actually finding out from us what’s useful. And they tend to explore areas of interest to them but not really listen to what’s most useful to the organisation. It’s more about their personal interest than thinking “ok I respect this organisation and what do they need from me?”

Uniform of the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders) Regiment of Foot of the British Empire on display at the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum in Stirling Castle
The 93rd was part of the Highland Brigade under command of Brigadier General Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde at the Battle of the Alma. This uniform was worn by Sergeant David Duff Philips at this battle in 1854 when he was shot twice, once above the left pocket and the other to the right of the row of buttons.
Sir Campbell was a firm believer in the effectiveness of a bayonet charge and ordered the soldiers to fire their rifles until they were "Within a yard of the Russians!" This would have put them within range of the smoothbore muskets which probably led to David being shot twice. David survived this but was medically discharged from the Regiment in may 1855.
