#art doesn’t know how to function without patrick

Art wishes he never met Patrick. His life would’ve been so much easier.
He could’ve been much less pathetic. Sure he would still seek validation from others, but that’s normal. Needing validation like a plant needs sunshine, int.
He could’ve been so normal without Patrick.
Somewhere in the six years he lived with Patrick, he rewired his brain. Between the coaching jerk off session, and the teasing that was boardlining bullying Art started to crave it. He needed it to function.
#bad bad drabble i found#idk#i could make this into a piss fic though#genius idea#at the academy patrick reminded art to go to the bathroom#to the point whenever patrick would go art would follow#and after doing that for six years art kinda forgot to go on his own#it would be embarrassing over the summers because sometimes he would just forget and realize he has to go as he’s actively wetting himself#but it gets so much worse at stanford#art doesn’t know how to function without patrick#he’s pissing himself like a toddler#he doesn’t know how to study#or when he should eat because patrick would take him to the dining hall#okay i’m done

Gamer!Patrick
who… you started dating in college. you guys met in your second year finance class after working on a project together. you thought he was cute but a little egotistical, always answering teacher questions without raising his hand. always contributing to class discussions aka saying his opinion louder than everyone else
who… always wears sweatpants or board shorts to class. no in between. always paired with his nike killshot’s, a watch his father bought him, and soft sprays of his expensive tom ford cologne. he clearly doesn’t care what people think of him. he’s also stupidly charismatic. all the business professors love him.
who… always insists on hanging out at your dorm instead of his off campus apartment. you never knew why until one day he finally gave in. his place was nice. expensive. he said his parents paid for the rent. it was a two bedroom apartment that he shared with his best friend Art but he was rarely home. but Patrick’s room was a disaster. dirty clothes everywhere, half eaten cups of ramen, half drunk water bottles, and suspicious socks strewn all over that made your stomach turn at the thought of what they were probably used for.
who… essentially ignores you everytime he’s on the game. his pc would be the only source of light in his room most nights. even if you spent the night, hoping he’d join you to sleep, most times he wouldn’t until an ungodly hour. staying up until 4/5am screaming at his teammates through his headphones, you’re surprised you can even sleep.
who… jerks off to porn videos of his favorite video game characters. he would never tell you, but one day when you’re over at his place, making cereal in the kitchen (because there’s no real food there), Art outs him. he busts out laughing saying “oh you didn’t know? yeah you should ask him about that.” you’re not even sure how Art knows this information.
who… denies the accusation stating that “why the fuck would I do that? that’s fucking gross.” only for you to catch him jerking off at 4am to overwatch porn. t-shirt pulled up, hand shoved down his boxers, abs flexing, eyes locked onto his phone screen. he doesn’t even notice that you woke up until you inch closer to him and spot the visuals on his phone. he drops his t-shirt from where it was between his teeth, “it’s not—whatever. fuck you,” he groans, hand picking up its pace. so you pull his hair (for being a brat), kiss his neck, and whisper dirty things into his ear while keeps watching his phone, making him finish in record time.
who… loves when you sit under his desk to blow him while he’s playing. trying really hard to concentrate and play well but it’s hard. the obscene squelching noises everytime he hits the back of your throat, the drool falling from the sides of your mouth, your other hand toying with his balls at the same time. he has to mute his mic when his friends keep asking him why he’s breathing so hard. he calls you a slut for trying to get his attention this way, “such a fucking slut. only way you know how to get my attention huh? want all my friends to hear me? so they know how much of a whore you are for my cock?”
who… hates loves playing video games with you. he has to teach you a lot, and you keep forgetting which buttons do what. it’s cute at first when you guys are playing co-op games like It Takes Two, but eventually after you try to make an ‘easy’ jump 5 times (dying everytime) he grabs the controller from you and does it for you, “Jesus fuck, it’s not that hard.” playing fortnite is a hit or miss because sometimes it’s fun but eventually it becomes stressful since Patrick is carrying you, making all the kills but also trying to watch your back while you’re doing the Taste dance emote in your Sabrina Carpenter skin.
who… can’t function when he sees your halloween costume. you dressed up as Kitana from mortal kombat (with the help of Art since you wanted to surprise Patrick). back to back frat parties on frat row. you keep getting wolf whistled at as you guys walk from house to house. Patrick keeps at least one point of contact the entire night, he can’t keep his hands to himself. a hand on your waist, around your shoulder, on your thigh, on your ass. and his favorite obviously being when you dance on him. he makes sure neither of you drink too much that night so he can fuck you stupid when you guys get back to his apartment. he already texted Art earlier to fuck off unless he wanted to hear you getting wrecked. it’s sloppy and rough and of course you keep your costume on. he pulls out his phone to record while you guys are in doggy.
who… actually is really sweet. he builds you guys a house in minecraft (with cherry blossom wood as you requested). will always put himself in harm’s way when you guys go mining. so he takes the lead and if there’s a creeper or a zombie he takes care of it. goes on crazy stupid long adventures with you just so you can find an ocelot, “this is fucking stupid, jungles are rare biomes it’s gonna take us forever to find one.”
who… thinks you may actually be the first girl he’s ever fallen in love with. the first girl to see all of him and still accept him for who he is. the first girl who never tried to change him. the first girl to enjoy just sitting in his presence, even if he’s on the game. but he’d never tell you any of that. not unless you said it first anyway.

Empty head pretty Princess art is always on my mind now… wearing his pretty lacy underwear under his normal clothes, a secret for just him and Patrick….. Patrick dragging him into the bathrooms and pushing him against the wall to hike up his shirt and touch him because hes going insane thinking about it and hes been half hard all day
Mmhm <33
CW: 18+ !NSFW!
Patrick makes him wear em all day. Picks out the prettiest pink lacy bra and matching panties. Fits him like a glove when he’s soft but he can’t stay soft when they’re on. He’s antsy. Squirming all morning — can’t sit still. Keeps rubbing at the bra no matter how many times Patrick nudges him to stop. He can’t adjust to the feeling of lace underneath his clothes. And he slowly starts losing himself in arousal.
He’s usually a know it all in history class but doesn’t raise his hand once to Professor Hassam’s surprise. By mid morning he needs Patrick. Can’t function without him. Needs Patrick to take notes for him while he’s chewing on his pen. Needs Patrick to guide him to his next class. Needs Patrick to tell him what to do. Keep track of all his stuff and tell him not to touch.
Patrick thinks he can handle it. Thinks it’ll be easy. But by lunch Art’s all giggly and flirty and playful. Doesn’t matter if it’s girls or boys and he’s flirting with girls and boys. By the end of lunch period, when they’re mostly alone he’s a total fucking mess, straddling the bench, barely hiding his arousal, licking greek yogurt off his spoon. Cheeks flushed, lips pink. He’s staring at Patrick with glassy blue fuck me eyes. Whispering in Patrick’s ear that it feels weird, that he’s so horny, and it’s all scratchy, and asking what happens if he comes by accident.
Patrick feels a little insane when he’s doing it. Sneaking into the out of order girls bathroom. Shoving Art up against the bathroom stall, kissing, touching, hands in Arts hair, hands up under Art’s uniform shirt mouthing his perky nipples through the lace. “God you’re a slut,” Patrick breathes as Art’s pushing back against him eagerly. “It’s only been a couple hours and you’d let anyone fucking bend you in half right now.”
“Patrick,” Art whines. “Patrick please.”
He didn’t plan to. God he meant to last all day. But the way Arts moaning, the pitch of his whines echoing throughout the empty bathroom are making him feral. Before he realizes what he’s doing he’s got his hands on Arts bare bottom. The thin lacy fabric the only thing keeping him out. He’s barely lubed up with the small bottle he shoved in his backpack just in case and he’s sliding the lace to the side to get his dick inside as fast as possible. Ramming it in just because of the way Art sounds as he does it. “That’s it… fuck yes… my gorgeous girl… they can look but this belongs to me.”
“Mmhm, ‘m all yours,” Art moans.
Patrick can’t help himself. He goes a little crazy. Maybe blacks out a little. By the time he’s done hes breathless, shivering. Art is dazed, his come dripping down the stall door, panties soaked, he’s so shaky he can barely stand, he’s grabbing at Patrick to keep himself upright.
“Mm, I love you,” Art says in his ear and Patrick knows it’s because they just fucked but he feels warm all over anyway.
Patrick cups his cheek. He’s such a mess. His clothes are scattered and he’s only in the lingerie. His eyes are bright, he appears lucid but his lips are swollen from how he’d been biting them, his skin’s all splotchy and pink, his hair’s all over the place.
It’s so obvious that he’s just had sex and that’s just gonna get him even more fucking attention and get him all worked up again.
“Come on, princess let’s get you dressed.” Patrick says, softly. He pulls Arts bra strap back up over his shoulder and gives him a kiss. Art falls into it, eyes closed, tongue slipping easily into Patrick’s mouth. Patrick will likely be back here with him in just a couple hours but it’s so fucking worth it.

Skepticism about the Throuple
Now before I get booed. I’ll have you know when I first watch the film, I was definitely team throuple!! It was when I saw it again that I was less enthusiastic about them as a throuple. I think that’s very much the fault of the film itself, if they are supposed to be a throuple we’ve should have seen more of them together as a threesome!!! We focused primarily on the three pairings! It didn’t have to be them in an official threesome. So we can see how them being together is their best state. It mainly comes down to the fact that we sort of talk about them conceptually and we don’t actually see them really mesh well together as polycule. Yes, I believe that they would 100% go back to that hotel after the match and bang it out. But an actually poly relationship? They are all way too dysfunctional for all that. They are not even functionally dysfunctional. The idea is that other person can come in and triangulate whenever each pairing has a problem. I don’t see that happening. They very much would just start ganging up on each other. None of them would really help diffuse the situation. Tashi would feed into the conflict between Patrick and Art. When Patrick and Tashi would get into it, Art would take Tashi’s side. And if things are bad with Art and Tashi, Patrick would just come in to undermine their relationship. Like…. I feel like they’d need therapy to make it work, but if they actually got therapy I’m not sure if any of them would stay together. I get the idea that they do a throuple instead of therapy and just don’t think it could work without therapy. That’s if therapy doesn’t just get them to severe these relationships for good. Idk maybe I need to watch it again to regain my interest in them together.

kraken bait 3: the moment of truth
the moment is finally upon us! no, not the actual expansion draft, that’s in 10 days. i mean my last (but best) installment of the kraken bait expansion draft theories!
this has been a long, long work in progress, basically since i posted the last one. i’ve asked nearly every hockey fan i know, as well as randomly messaging several friends and cool people on hockeyblr, for their ideas and opinions on their favorite team’s expansion draft situation. and as with my previous lists, i had my friend and capfriendly consultant corwin (@chaos-hockey) collaborating with me to make this semi-reasonable (largely against their wishes). i’ll be including commentary from myself and my variety of sources with each pick.
for reference, this is a somewhat plausible look at who seattle might take in the expansion draft. it’s not a prediction, because even i don’t honestly think the kraken will take some of these players, but it’s a fun simulation. it does follow expansion draft rules, and even comes under the cap (which took some last-minute finagling by me and corwin).
without further ado, let’s get into it! this list got long, so it’s all under the cut.
Anaheim Ducks: Haydn Fleury
this one comes straight from resident danton heinen fan, ergo ducks fan @dantonheinens, so thanks for your help casey! they sent me a very detailed explanation of anaheim’s expansion draft situation basically explaining that there’s a whole lot of “ands, ifs, or buts” with the ducks, but if fleury is exposed, he’s a slam dunk (slam duck? i’m sorry)
Arizona Coyotes: Christian Fischer
the one thing i know about this dude is he got wrecked in a fight with nathan mackinnon in the 2020 playoffs. this is the first of several picks on this list i borrowed from The Athletic’s mock expansion drafts, which happens if i don’t know the team and i don’t know anyone else who does. corwin and i also considered taking adin hill from the yotes, but we decided on some other goalies instead (stay tuned).
Boston Bruins: Jeremy Lauzon
i have a lot of friends who are bruins fans, so credits are owed to: corwin, casey again, alex (@patron-saint-of-boston-hockey) & luna (@kureally) & any other bruins fans in the nwhl discord, and my irl bruins friends. i got a lot of opinions on the bruins pick, including jake debrusk, jakub zboril, connor clifton, and trent frederic. but the one name almost everyone could agree on was lauzon. therefore, i’ve decided he’s headed to seattle.
(it feels worth it to mention that at the prospect of having to take someone from the bruins, corwin said “curses be upon your name!” in an aggressively thick boston accent)
Buffalo Sabres: Rasmus Asplund
i could not tell you who this is, other than the fact that he’s one of buffalo’s three rasmuses (rasmi?). corwin and i had also talked about maybe putting anders bjork here, like i did in the last go-around, but i defaulted to The Athletic this time, and they thought asplund was a good pick, so here we are.
Calgary Flames: Mark Giordano
another pick borrowed from The Athletic, but i’ve seen predictions of giordano to the kraken a fair amount. it just seems right (and a whole lot better than corwin’s proposition of matthew tkachuk from last round).
Carolina Hurricanes: Brady Skjei
this one comes from the lovely @summerteukka, so thank you kinga! she gave me a very good rundown on the canes and the expansion draft, with the conclusion being the canes have so much defensive depth that it’s definitely going to be a defenseman, and especially if they resign dougie hamilton, skjei seems to be a likely choice. i’m all for it- we’ll have “an S and a K and a J all next to each other” on a kraken jersey.
Chicago: Adam Gaudette
similarly to the arizona pick, corwin and i considered a goalie here- in this case, it would have been malcolm subban. but he is not one of the goalies we ended up going for. instead, we opted on bringing micaela gaudette and her husband back to the pacific northwest.
Colorado Avalanche: Ryan Graves
this is really a no-brainer. gravy is a good defenseman, but the avs have such a strong defense between cale makar, devon toews, and sam girard (and you could add erik johnson when he’s healthy), plus up-and-comers like bo byram. gravy will almost definitely be exposed, and i think he’s a great pick for seattle. plus it’s relatively painless for avs fans who also will like seattle (like yours truly).
(corwin also wanted me to mention that they want gravy traded to the bruins so he can play with curtis hall, who is basically “color-swapped ryan graves”)
Columbus Blue Jackets: Dean Kukan
another pick taken right from The Athletic. i do not know who this is, but he’s a defenseman and the writers liked this pick so i went with it. for the record, corwin really wanted this pick to be boone jenner because he has a funky name, but i wanted another defenseman, so the fun name was sacrificed for function.
Dallas Stars: Jason Dickinson
i don’t really have an explanation for this one. corwin and i were talking about the stars options and picking dickinson just felt right.
Detroit Red Wings: Vladislav Namestnikov
thanks are owed here to joce (@doubleminor) for her red wings expertise! she gave me a few players who were likely kraken bait and i picked from there. it came down to evgeny svechnikov and vladislav namestnikov, but i went with namestnikov in the end. he was with the avs for a brief period and i liked him then, plus the vibes just seem right, so here we are.
Edmonton Oilers: Tyson Barrie
really, tyson barrie was the player who started the whole kraken bait thing. corwin made the drawing, i made the first list, and the rest is history. do i actually think tyson will be going to the kraken in a week? not really. do i still really like the idea of it? 100%. therefore, i will continue to engage in my “tyson barrie to seattle” nonsense.
Florida Panthers: Chris Driedger
oh look, our first goalie! florida had some interesting skater options, but when it came down to it, corwin and i thought the cats were a good place to take a goalie from. driedger did pretty well this season, plus the panthers’ goalie situation is locked up between $10 million man bobrovsky and future star spencer knight.
Los Angeles Kings: Viktor Arvidsson
corwin was feeling pretty strong about this one, so i’m trusting their judgement. according to them, seattle expressed interest in arvidsson, so nashville traded him to the kings instead of giving him up for nothing. now the kings get to give him up for nothing, which works out pretty well, considering i had absolutely no clue who to pick from the kings.
Minnesota Wild: Matt Dumba
like some other picks, this just seems right. i like matt dumba a lot. he seems like a fun and wholesome guy, and his activism, both on his own and with the hockey diversity alliance, is admirable. i hope he gets to display his personality and keep working to better the sport of hockey with the kraken.
Montreal Canadiens: Jake Allen
goalie number two! picking a player from the habs was weird because i got attached to them during the playoffs, but i really don’t know many of their players? so corwin and i deliberated on this a little, and after looking at our goalie situation, decided that allen was the right pick from montreal.
Nashville Predators: Calle Jarnkrok
after doing art for and getting a featured article from the preds, corwin thinks they’re some kind of nashville expert. i originally had matt duchene here, but corwin said not him. their logic? they did art of duchene for their preds project, so they probably want to keep him around. fair point. so we went with calle jarnkrok. the logic behind that choice was simple: “calle jarn-kraken”
New Jersey Devils: Andreas Johnsson
i wish i kept a counter of how many times corwin told me “ron francis doesn’t care about your feelings!” when we were discussing the devils pick. they kept advocating for either nate bastian or mikey mcleod, but i would not stand for the superbuddies being separated. this is my kraken bait list, so my decisions. i asked a few of my devils friends for their input (props to sabs @jakejuentzel and h @bigmouthnatebastian), and in between the mild panic, andreas johnsson got tossed out. therefore, it’s mango getting shipped to seattle. does it further lower the average age of the devils? yeah, but it’ll be fine! the nhl could use some youthful chaos.
New York Islanders: Jordan Eberle
all of my kraken bait ideas for the isles came from the bardown breakdown podcast (a great listen if you like hockey and pop-punk/punk music!), since both hosts are isles fans. they had a few names tossed out, including josh bailey and casey cizikas, but corwin and i decided on eberle. like with a lot of these, right vibes.
New York Rangers: Kevin Rooney
i’ve seen two names pretty consistently for rangers kraken bait: colin blackwell and kevin rooney. is blackwell is better and therefore the more likely pick? yes. but kevin rooney is a former devil and also mocked tom wilson, so i voted he gets to go seattle.
Ottawa Senators: Chris Tierney
i don’t think i could name more than three, maybe four players on the sens, so i defaulted to The Athletic on this one. i have no idea who chris tierney is, but it works, so there we go.
Philadelphia Flyers: James Van Riemsdyk
@phillyjoel left some fantastic notes on the flyers kraken bait in the tags of my last list, giving me good evidence to tell corwin that for the last time, nolan patrick is not kraken bait. the argument i saw was that the flyers are probably going to trade patrick instead of giving him up for nothing and make cap space by giving away van riemsdyk or voracek. The Athletic liked the van riemsdyk pick, and corwin could live with it, so that’s where we settled.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Zach Aston-Reese
i honestly don’t have a whole lot of explanation for this one. another pick borrowed from The Athletic, corwin and i liked it, there we go. we considered going with kris letang, but the vibes weren’t right.
San Jose Sharks: Ryan Donato
shoutout to my sharks friend and amazing artist K (@18minutemajor) for their help! i originally had brent burns in this slot, on K’s suggestion (we had a fantastic exchange about brent burns befriending bigfoot). however, i ran into last-minute cap trouble and had to switch the pick. ryan donato came from The Athletic, but i think it’s kind of a fun pick. he’s been passed between a few teams recently, but most of what i know of ryan donato comes from the 2018 olympics (aka the first time i really watched hockey!), when he was apparently doing pretty well for team usa.
St. Louis Blues: Vince Dunn
thank you @powerblais (and the blues fans group chat) for your input on this one! vince dunn was one of the names on the list erin sent me, and The Athletic also had him listed, so we went with it.
Tampa Bay Lightning: Blake Coleman
thanks @heddy for responding to my out-of-the-blue message with some good input on the bolts! ana gave me some good suggestions like tyler johnson plus something else so they take on the contract, alex killorn, and ondrej palat. in the end, this devils fan defaulted to pickles. this pick is in the same category as tyson barrie- do i actually think coleman is going to the kraken? not really. do i still like the idea? absolutely.
Toronto Maple Leafs: Travis Dermott
borrowed from The Athletic and some other kraken bait predictions, because everyone has something to say about the leafs. corwin and i waffled between dermott and alexander kerfoot for this pick, but we eventually settled on dermott to seattle.
Vancouver Canucks: Madison Bowey
this pick changed so much in just one day. we originally had braden holtby here because original kraken bait, but then i ran into cap trouble. so i switched it to zack macewen, following a pick by The Athletic. but then i wanted one or two more defensemen, so i switched to madison bowey, who was the other pick from The Athletic. after all that, it seems like the right pick.
Washington Capitals: Vitek Vanecek
our third and final goalie! corwin and i had our eyes on vanecek as kraken bait for a while- a young goalie with promise and room to improve seemed like the right pick for seattle. we briefly considered tj oshie--he’s from washington state, and corwin wanted to upset caps fans (we were talking during the first round of the playoffs)--but ended up back with vanecek as our pick.
Winnipeg Jets: Mason Appleton
last pick of the list! not much to say here, though. it’s a pick borrowed from The Athletic, but we went with him over the other option from the jets because he has a fun name. to quote corwin, mason appleton sounds like “an apple pie in a mason jar on skates.”
and there you have it folks, the final kraken bait list! if you want to know the specifics, we’ve got 3 goalies, 16 forwards, and 11 defensemen, and the total cap hit is 76.4M. i’m pretty doubtful that this will be the actual expansion draft lineup, but we’ll have to see how many, if any, picks corwin and i got right.
thanks again to everyone who helped me out, and i hope you enjoyed the chaos and commentary of the kraken bait lists!

Schitt’s Creek | David Rose: ISFP / 4w3
I’m trying very hard not to connect with people right now.

Judging Functional Axis: Fi/Te
Even though he’s rarely forthcoming with his expression of them, David is the most emotional and sensitive out of all the Roses (he doesn't verbalize his concerns about Alexis travelling all over the world and leaving him behind until years later in Schitt's Creek.) He needs the time to process his feelings at his own pace, refusing to rush them and getting overwhelmed when he doesn't get the time to do this. First, he runs away from Schitt's Creek, when he realizes they can't sell the town. Later, he withdraws from everyone when he finds about Patrick and his fiancée. David has trouble separating feelings from reality—he needs things to be as he wants them to be, refusing to compromise authenticity for commercial success. It affects the business at Blouse Barn, and then, at Rose Apothecary. Sometimes, he takes decisions all on his own and forgets to consider their impact on others (he decides he and Patrick should move back to New York without asking for his opinion.)
Perceiving Functional Axis: Se/Ni
David is all about the aesthetic of things. He has an eye for design and detail that’s unmatched by anyone around him. He even ran an art gallery back in New York that produced the most unconventional art. David has a specific vision for how things should look, and this vision permeates every part of his life: from everything to what he wears, to how he transforms the Blouse Barn to an upscale boutique, and how he designs Rose Apothecary. David goes all his adult life without knowing or suspecting Moira and Johnny were responsible for his success. Occasionally, he can make rather impulsive decisions. For instance, he suggests Patrick see other people without setting ground rules or thinking about what that might entail.

In stories about growing up for audiences who are growing up themselves, a strong main character is a necessity. Coming-of-age stories have been around for centuries and have always been popular in cinema, from the days of James Dean to the modern world of Netflix originals.
Related: 10 Of The Best Coming Of Age Movies Everyone Needs To See
While there are many elements of coming-of-age movies that work together to create one timeless tale, such as the soundtrack and shooting locations, the key is a lead protagonist with whom the viewer can wholly identify and empathize. Over the years, there have been some truly impressive young actors who nailed this brief and delivered performances that will forever stand out in their careers.
10 Nick Robinson – The Kings Of Summer (2013)

In a modern coming-of-age tale for fans of Stand By Me (1986), Nick Robinson stars as Joe, a teenager frustrated with his father’s micromanagement. To escape his smothering suburban life, he invites his best friend and an unusual new acquaintance to build a house in the woods and live off the land.
With humor as this movie’s crowning glory alongside breathtaking shots of the Midwest, Robinson demonstrates his acting range in an impressive feature film debut. He manages to effortlessly keep up with comedic veterans like Nick Offerman and Marc Evan Jackson but also demonstrates control and solemnity in the movie’s tenser moments.
9 Thomas Mann – Me And Earl And The Dying Girl (2015)

Greg is an unusual choice for a story’s main character, and Thomas Mann captures his socially awkward nature but chameleon-like behavior effortlessly. Although Greg has made it his mission to “remain on low-key good terms” with every student in school, he struggles to see outside of himself until he becomes friends with terminally ill Rachel (Olivia Cooke).
Related: 10 Best Coming Of Age Comedy Dramas Like Juno
Greg’s development is displayed with as much poise as such a gauche character can be afforded, from seeming emotionally blank to succumbing to grief in Rachel’s room. Opposite Nick Offerman and other great talents in Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, Mann’s comedic delivery, both verbal and physical, is truly something to behold and never wanes.
8 Elliot Page – Juno (2007)

Juno is the blueprint for American Independent cinema, primarily for its Oscar-winning script and unconventional story of teen pregnancy. With a host of celebrated actors surrounding them, Elliot Page shines in what is arguably their most memorable and beloved role.
The offbeat comedy and sarcastic quips of Juno is one for the textbooks, and Elliot carries it with ease from start to finish; the odd vocabulary tossed around rolls as effortlessly as standard English off their tongue. They may appear unimposing in stature, but they dominate every scene with wit and hilarious delivery to make not only an unforgettable movie but a memorable main character.
7 Patrick Fugit – Almost Famous (2000)

Aspiring writer William is something of a wallflower amongst the larger-than-life personalities of the band Stillwater and transfixing roadie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), but he manages to hold his own and becomes somebody on whom they can all rely. Similarly, Patrick Fugit could have shrunk next to the more experienced actors beside him, but he triumphs.
The fresh-faced actor brings shining optimism and gentleness to a story of wild parties and volatile emotions. He captures William’s level-headed nature and wisdom beyond his years while still exuding the excitement of a newcomer to the rock and roll scene, perfectly balancing youth and innocence with shrewdness and morality.
6 Dustin Hoffman – The Graduate (1967)

A timeless tale of disillusionment in the face of change, The Graduate is fondly remembered for its incredible soundtrack from Simon and Garfunkel and the iconic affair with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Besides that, in a career-launching role, Dustin Hoffman proves his mettle as a force to be reckoned with onscreen.
Despite having an affair with a much older woman (and later falling for her daughter), Benjamin is a graceless and self-conscious leading man, and Nichols cast Hoffman with the belief that he had the perfect demeanor for the role. Between his personality and superb acting ability, Hoffman pulls off a memorable performance and is one of the main reasons why The Graduate has become a classic to stand the test of time.
5 Miles Teller – The Spectacular Now (2013)

To bring to life hard-partying Sutter from Tim Tharp’s novel of the same name, the correct actor was called upon. Miles Teller oozes charm in this role and makes it easy to understand how Sutter has made it through life without a thought for the future since everything comes easily to him at the moment.
Besides being the life of the party and effortlessly sweet, Sutter is a young alcoholic who, below the surface, realizes that he is sabotaging his future, and Teller does a marvelous job of exploring this side to the endearing protagonist. The serious self-deprecation that follows reuniting with his absent father, who is a vision of Sutter’s own future, is relayed masterfully and leaves the audience in awe of his performance.
4 Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird (2017)

Star Saoirse Ronan had a number of stellar movies under her belt before Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, with her first Oscar nomination at the age of thirteen only the beginning of an illustrious career. Her range sets her apart from other young actresses in the game, spanning from sci-fi to period drama to raw, coming-of-age movies such as this.
The main character of this tale is anything but meek. Ronan is strong-willed and assured in the role and explores the everyday highs and lows of growing up while cultivating believable onscreen relationships in a way that can place any viewer right alongside her in Sacramento, which feels more like home the longer that you watch her senior year progressing.
3 Greta Gerwig – Frances Ha (2012)

A coming-of-age movie for people who are already of age, Frances Ha chronicles a woman’s journey into adulthood as, while she has technically grown up, it is clear that she’s “not a real person yet”. While most movies of the genre take place in high school, this one takes place in New York as Frances struggles to realize her dream as a dancer, maintain her relationships, and generally get by as a functioning adult.

In another collaboration between Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, the leading lady fits this character like a glove and harnesses the youthful spirit of teenage coming-of-age movies to prove that growing up doesn’t stop when you leave high school. It is an honest depiction of young adult life in that, really, nobody knows what they are doing.
2 Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name (2017)

In one of his best movies Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars as young Elio in a story of young love in 1980s Italy. He is both charming and bashful, causing the viewer to fall in love with him even faster than Oliver does, and he manages to convey so much heart and recognizable pain that the extent of his acting ability is never in question.
While Chalamet brilliantly inspires empathy for Elio’s confusion and inner turmoil throughout his relationship with Oliver, his final performance during the credits is a masterclass in understated yet powerful acting, as we watch the cycle of Elio’s heartbreak and are left reeling from his final, heart-rending glance directly into the camera.
1 Logan Lerman – The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)

At only 20 years old, Logan Lerman delivers one of the most honest and moving portrayals of adolescence in modern-day cinema. For an actor who has had widely varying roles, such as a heroic demigod and a plucky rancher’s son, an introverted character like Charlie could have been difficult to embody, but Lerman does so with an awe-inspiring grace.
Lerman’s presentations of depression and trauma are never extravagant; his performance is highly effective using mostly subtle speech and action. He beautifully showcases Charlie’s innocence and love for his friends and keeps a powerful persona waiting behind a meek exterior to offer one of the greatest portrayals of a coming-of-age character that cinema has seen.

Portrait of a Lady on Fire interview with director and leading actresses, hosted by Patrick Fabre on Radio des Rues at the 2019 Angoulême Francophone Film Festival. Translation into English.
Patrick Fabre: PF
Céline Sciamma: CS
Adèle Haenel: AH
Noémie Merlant: NM
Translated by Steph RodCa
PF: We are here on the radio of the festival, and I‘m really intimidated, which doesn't happen very often, because I am with the director and the leading actresses of a film that has left me speechless, overwhelmed, thrilled. The only thing that I could think of when i saw it was: This is a masterpiece. I'm talking about Celine Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire. I'm joined by Celine Sciamma, Adèle Haenel, and Noémie Merlant. I am really happy to have you here. How are you?
CS, AH, NM: Pretty good, thank you.
PF: Was it a difficult night? Did the film screening start a little bit late? Or did everything turn out well?
CS: I think everything turned out well.
PF: Yeah, i've been told that. Spectators said that.
CS: I believe them
PF: I'm happy for you. Is this your first time at the festival?
CS: It is my second one
PF: The first time you presented…
CS: Girlhood
PF: The film was in competition, right?
CS: No, I don’t think so
PF: What is your opinion of the Angoulême Francophone Film Festival? Because everybody says is a key-event, is a must-go, you were at the Cannes Film Festival where things went well for you, so do you agree that this is a key-step?
CS: Well, it’s a key-step because we are in front of another kind of audience, a sort of “real audience”, even if I don’t know quite well what a real audience means
PF: An audience barely composed of professionals, that’s the rumors… Adèle is not completely sure of that definition
AH: I have nothing to say on that matter. Indeed, i think it is amazing there is an audience that is less related to the film industry. It’s the townspeople who come, so it’s amazing.
PF: Exactly. So, is it important to have this feedback?
CS: Of course, on the road to film release we get closer and closer to real audience so we are happy to be closer and closer to them.
PF: Both of you Adèle and Noémie, do you think likewise? Is it important to meet the audience, to have this feedback?
AH: Yes, it’s very important. It is a part of our job that may seem laborious sometimes but in fact it’s extremely important because we make films in the hope of communicating ideas, for the love of beauty, for the love of art. And this is not a one-way process, we are not the only ones who go and meet the audience, the people themselves come and meet us. So let’s say it’s the second heart of our job.
PF: What about you Noémie? Because you have already been to the festival as well. I remember that I hosted a screening of Heaven will wait, you were very moved. So, do you agree that it is important to meet the audience, to discover the film with them?
NM: Well, yeah, it is extremely important. I think we all make films to share something, a work, an experience. And yeah, I clearly remember what it’s like to meet them, to share the end of a film, to see their questions, their reactions, or just their strong words, it’s very significant.
PF: So, in the film Noémie is a young painter, Marianne, who is commissioned to make Héloïse’s portrait in order to send it to her future husband in Milan. Héloïse is played by Adèle Haenel. The story is set in 1770. It was you, Céline Sciamma, who wrote the screenplay. You were awarded the Best Screenplay at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. You went from a girlhood to another girlhood just some centuries earlier, and yet the film is extremely modern. How do you get to make a modern period film? Was that your intention?
CS: Yes, I wanted to make the subject as contemporary as possible, each one of my films has been ruled by this intention. So the time period may be ancient but the subject itself is contemporary. It seems to me that it is the same kind of energy that is present in all films, in character incarnation. To me, the significant difference is not so much the time period or even the film genre but rather adulthood, the fact of telling a past love story, and the desire to work with actresses in this business. I think that’s more what I try to do.
PF: Where did this story idea come from?
CS: From my mind. [Laughs]
PF: Which is apparently a good place
CS: Well, period films are quite particular. In general they are subject to the adaptation of a work or a historical event , which is the starting point. So there was this desire to tell an original story that had not been told yet, so it was rather wise to invent it. Then, there is the pleasure of proposing a completely new fiction, that also makes the film contemporary, by not making comments about the voices of the past, but instead by inventing them. Also, by telling the long continuity of the bodies, the hearts, the desires, even if the contexts are different, at the same time, there is a common ground because it’s a time period where progress seems linear, especially the progress concerning women, but this is not at all the case, the destiny of women and their place in the world are still adjustment variables. It was a time where there was some freedom and many women had a career but then there was a backlash and they were erased. Then, in the nineteenth century, the notion of bourgeoise women was introduced. We are going through a blossoming moment of a certain culture, a feminist counterculture that has shaped the world order, so I think this is an important moment, it’s a great moment to be alive. However, you know, you feel the violence, the backlash. Last night, there was an event around femicide, 94 women have been killed this year (in France), the numbers are increasing, it’s a higher rate compared with the same period last year. I think that constitutes a sort of backlash too.
PF: Definitely. As regards to acting in costume, at the beginning of the film we see Marianne arriving by boat to the island, there is a wooden box that fall off the boat, we don’t know yet what’s on the inside. It looks like it’s super important for your character, Noémie, and you jump into the sea wearing this dress and I was like, no way, she’s going to sink, she’s going to die. [Laughs] In that moment, do you bring out the importance of the costume?
NM: Yeah, totally. We talked about it before
CS: A lot
NM: For days and even weeks
AH: The costume was very stressful
NM: Because I don’t know what the dry weight of the dress is, several kilos ?
CS: It’s heavy
NM: Once wet, go figure! But you can do it, we did it. We also had a woman helping us, diving, but I was in the water, I swam wearing that dress and I did it. I had small buoys on the dress.
PF: For safety reasons. And it’s crazy, there are gestures in this film related to the costume that I’ve never seen before in a period film. For example, getting dressed and undressed, you observe a more practical aspect, you see the cords…
NM: The pockets, yeah.
PF: Adèle, you’re not convinced, you experienced that in a different way, didn’t you? Am i wrong and it’s not as easy as it seems?
AH: No, I mean it has to do more with the social function of people. Since we are talking about someone from nobility, it’s an object par excellence, you could say that. In this case, lacing a corset-back dress, getting dressed yourself becomes impossible. So we cannot say that independence is encouraged.
PF: Of course. But i was thinking of those petticoats
AH: Indeed. But, I don’t know, I’m not an expert on that, but based on the function of women there had to be a relatively high practical level. I think, all in all, servants were able to dress themselves, they didn’t need the help of anyone.
PF: Yesterday, I was telling Céline there is a shot in the film that overwhelms me, it’s a very simple shot, you see these three women in the kitchen. The third woman, it must be said, is played by Luàna Bajrami and she is the young maid. At a certain point, they’re left alone, the fiancée’s mother, played marvelously by Valeria Golino, is gone. You see them in the kitchen, the maid is doing embroidery, this activity is rather reserved for a noble or bourgeois person, someone having this social status, Noémie’s character is in the middle, and yours (Adèle’s) is cooking. So, there is a social role reversal. I found it a magnificent shot, it tells a lot of things without words, without dialogues. How did you come up with this? Was it something that appeared on the set or was it already written?
CS: I think films are made based on pivot scenes, scenes providing us with foundations and courage. Therefore, this image was one of these, it was one of the most precious images in the film. Besides, it’s a sequence-shot where there is a choreography between the three characters, you see Sophie doing embroidery, then there is Marianne who enters and serves a glass of wine, you see, women drink, women smoke, and then there is an aristocrat, Héloïse, cooking. So what’s interesting in this shot is not only the generation of a pleasure for spectators, this carnavalesque pleasure derived from this role reversal, but also a pleasure for the three women. I mean, the aristocrat is not cooking just because the roles have been reversed but because she enjoys it, it’s the jubilation of Adèle’s character and Adèle, she’s a part of the image’s composition, the pleasure, the incarnation, the joy, the opportunity, the meaning of having the opportunity to change places.
PF: Another strong moment is that when Adèle’s character says: “Let’s paint!”. To be represented in a reality becomes really important in this part of the film. What was your experience like in that scene?
AH: I don’t see it very different from the whole film. It’s pretty much what Céline has talked about. There is something political when we go into action but also something extremely joyful. We had essentially the same idea with Céline, we were going in the same direction, in terms of jubilation. To me, this scene is the result of connected minds, it’s not a dominant mind offering its world vision but it’s several minds stimulating each other, several sensitivities in connection and even if they remain single entities they have a decoupled strength.
PF: Group strength?
AH: Friendship strength, i would say.
PF: Is friendship strength what you need to make a good film? To be supported by a team you can trust? How important is to assemble a team before making a film?
CS: Yeah, of course. In this film there is, on the one hand, a great loyalty with my producer, with my mentor, with my music composer, even if music is sparingly used, with Adèle, and on the other hand, there is plenty of novelty, there is Noémie Merlant, cinematographer Claire Mathon. So it’s a mix of friends and meetings, as well as future friends. So I don’t believe friendship is necessary when making a good film, I think the film is similar to the way it was made and the set rules, the atmosphere, the feelings are reflected. Overall, I think if we make a romantic movie it’s okay to love each other.
PF: Noémie, this film surely means a lot to you because you are more in the spotlight, it’s one of the first films where you’re given a leading role, even if in Heaven will wait you had a leading role as well, it was kind of different since there were two parallel stories, it was hyperlink cinema, however in this one there are three characters. Besides, this film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. Do all theses reasons make it even more meaningful to you? Or, they have nothing to do and it’s the story itself that really matters to you?
NM: Well, it’s a mix of a lot of things, what you said but also meeting the team, meeting Céline, Adèle, was really important to me. The way Céline works. The story also shows a real vision shared intensively by Céline and Adèle. They provided me and they provide me with this vision. So, to me it’s extremely important as an artist, as an actress, and as a woman. I learned and I keep on learning several things thanks to this film, so it is extremely important because of this as well.
PF: I think we can all learn a lot of things thanks to this film and I strongly recommend that you watch it. It will be released on…
CS: September 18
PF: I strongly recommend that you go watch Céline Sciamma’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire on September 18. I’ll definitely go watch it on September 18 because I’m already missing it. Then, maybe I’ll get a “page 28” tattoo. [Laughs]

Chekhov’s Garden Shed
For the last four or five years, the RoL fandom has had a masterpost of Chekhov’s guns/unanswered questions from the series – the last version, with links to the original, can be found here. Past contributors include @deviantaccumulation, @the-high-meggas, @maple-clef, @uncommonsockeater, and @flannelgiraffe, as well as others who I have doubtless forgotten. [If that’s you or someone you know, please speak up!]
Ben Aaronovitch has indicated that he views the various open questions of the series as less of a set of ‘guns on the mantelpiece’ (which must be taken down and fired before the series is finished) and more a ‘garden shed’ of things he thinks might be useful one day but could also end up rusting in the back after getting buried under other things. The fun is finding out which is which. (Thanks to @ilikesallydonovan for originally reporting this and chasing down the link!)
So, without further ado, here is the renamed Chekhov’s Garden Shed Of Stuff That Might Come Back Later. It’s separated into Answered Questions, Partially-Answered Questions, and Things Still Buried At The Back Of The Shed. I enthusiastically welcome comments, corrections, and missing items. Contains spoilers for all published RoL-related material including the novellas, comics, online snippets, and interviews with the author. A mirror of this version can be found at Dreamwidth – I will try and keep it updated as I update this one.
ANSWERED QUESTIONS:
· What the fox said to Abigail in WuG It was warning her about Chorley’s involvement with/interest in Skygarden.
· Peter’s father needs a few thousand for dental work; his mum is very keen to get the money so that he might re-launch his career. They’ve already done a gig (beaucoup money) for Ty. Will this be a vulnerability for Peter at some point? Apparently not; his dad’s band do regular gigs for the demi-monde, his dad has his new teeth, and Ty doesn’t seem to have been involved at all. Peter just has to live with his parents being better-informed about his work and new world than he might like!
· Will we see Awa Shambir again? Her of the suspiciously expensive hijab to be cleaning the offices (of a front organisation for an evil wizard) in… Goodbye Awa Shambir the Somali cleaning lady, hello Lady Caroline Elizabeth Louise Linden-Limmer, surreptitiously aerial scion of nobility.
· What was Molly doing in the tech cave? Is she on facebook/twitter/tumblr/a cooking forum? Looking up recipes? Has she discovered online shopping? Molly is active on Twitter gossiping and swapping recipes; it’s not a secret from either Peter or Nightingale, they just pretend not to know.
· Is that watch Nightingale gave Peter going to have any future relevance? Peter and Caroline had a watch-off in The Hanging Tree which Peter won, and the practitioner habit of wearing mechanical (and hideously expensive) watches enabled Peter to identify Chorley as the Faceless Man.
· Who is Mr. Nolfi’s mother? Where did she learn magic? and Have any other Newtonian wizards continued to practice in secret and/or trained apprentices in other parts of the country, without telling Nightingale? (Broader: was Nightingale mostly wrong about being the last wizard in Britain or really, totally, 100% wrong?) and What about the “female affiliates” of the Little Crocodiles? and How many wizards did Wheatcroft actually train and where are they now? Most of an answer to all of these: there’s a long-standing tradition of women practicing and teaching each other Newtonian magic dating back to before the founding of the official Folly. Mr Nolfi’s mother and the ‘female affiliates’ of the Little Crocodiles could well have come from this tradition. And Nightingale was totally utterly wrong about being the last wizard in Britain. Practitioners exist trained by ‘hedge’ wizards and witches, trained by Little Crocodiles, immigrated and bringing other traditions with them…that cat is not only out of the bag, it was never even in it. C.f. Patrick Gale and co. in Detective Stories and Lies Sleeping. However, many Little Crocodiles never really learned magic at all, or managed to brush it off after university as unimportant – unfortunately for them, Martin Chorley targeted them as tools and bait.
PARTIALLY-ANSWERED QUESTIONS:
· What happened at Ettersberg that caused magic to disappear? Answered in various interviews: magic didn’t disappear at Ettersberg as an objective thing, but a lot of practitioners were wiped out by the war and the Nazis, as well as a lot of genii locorum and other fae and magical people. Nightingale over-indexed on this because he was depressed and traumatised, and the magic ‘coming back’ is a combination of a new generation of gods, fae, and practitioners growing up, and Nightingale noticing the ones who were there all along.
· Where are the notes Peter was promised? Peter has a deal with Nightingale about getting questions answered in return for magical progress; we haven’t seen him look at any old wizard’s notes specifically but he doesn’t seem to be waiting on them.
· What was Nightingale doing in the 70s that he managed to miss the original FM’s adventure in Soho? Working with the Met, apparently - he was called in when Woodville-Gentle got his at Lady Helena’s hands, but too late to determine whether it was magic. Seems like he just wasn’t paying enough attention to what was going on around him!
· What was Peter doing after he left school and while he was a PCSO? Why did he have problems during his A levels? Why did he join the police? Peter flatted and worked retail for a while after he left school (possibly while he was at school, too). We still don’t know what happened with his A-levels or what led him to join the police.
· Outwith the Met, does the Folly answer to the Home Office (or higher)? There are hints at that (cf. Walid in RoL), but nothing more and Who is Nightingale’s boss/who does Postmartin send his files to? No direct answer to who they answer to beyond what we already knew, but we learn in THT that they have their own source of funding and aren’t an official part of the Met. Nightingale does not appear to have any direct supervisor beyond the Commissioner (or presumably they would have been informed/called when he was kidnapped in Night Witch).
· How do “Hedge Witches” practise magic; how does it differ from formal Newtonian magic and will we get to meet any? Are “Hedge Wizards” simply rusticated Newtonian wizards, or do they also have informally-developed skillz? Per the one we meet in Black Mould: hedge witches and wizards have informally-developed skills rather than just being rusticated Folly wizards, but how close their magic is to the style Peter is learning, it’s hard to say (because it was a comic.) Others are probably from the female tradition, ex-Newtonian wizards, etc – it’s a mixed group.
· How old is Postmartin, exactly (Peter thinks he looks older and frailer than his Dad, who’s in his 70s, but that’s just his guess)? How did he get that job, and is he ‘just’ a civilian affiliate, like Walid, or something else? Who does he answer to, and what happens if/when he needs replacing? What’s his twitter handle?! Postmartin served during the Korean War, so must have been born between 1928 and 1936 (per @sparrow-wings) - he’s currently in his 80s, as it’s late 2015 in current book time. His Twitter handle might be “dyingforafag” (who Molly is chatting to in Body Work).
· What sort of experiments were the Nazis doing with vampires? (Do we want to know? Proooooooooooobably not.) and Can the Rivers be killed, if they’re badly injured enough far enough away from their river? What happens then? We found out in Lies Sleeping you can use ‘tinned vampires’ to kill and hurt genii locorum and discomfit practitioners, so that’s…you know…fine. Rivers can definitely be killed in general, c.f. the former Lugg whom the Methodists got to. It’s only functional immortality.
· What’s the deal with Mr. Punch when Peter’s leaving London at the beginning of Foxglove Summer? Is he coming back? Is it only Peter who senses him? If so, why? and How are Lesley and Punch connected? And What powers does Lesley have now aside from face-changing, if any? Martin Chorley was trying to murder Punch, who was a god of chaos and vengeance, in order to 1) gain magical power 2) ????? 3) glorious white supremacy. Lesley agreed to help Chorley to get back at Punch, but may still have some connection to him, having survived possession by him; she certainly has magical powers of her own now, being able to change her face at will. They wanted Punch powered up so he’d be a better source of magic when taken down. Punch was still pinned to London Bridge, but was freed by Peter. He can be talked down by his daughter Walbrook, but for better or worse, he’s out and a player in London’s magical ecosystem. Let’s hope Peter’s right and he plays an important role in it.
· How and why did Isis become immortal, since just marrying a River doesn’t appear to do the trick? Kelly tells Tobi Winter in The October Man that sometimes the partners/spouses/better halves of Rivers do just pick up immortality, although even she as an elder River doesn’t know exactly how or why that happens. Probably it’s what happened to Isis. Why it hasn’t happened to George McAlister is an open question.
· What does it mean that Michael Cheung is ‘the new guy in Chinatown’? and Is there something going on with Guleed (PLEASE NO) or is she just picking up things about the demi-monde via her friendship with Bev (…and others)? Michael Cheung is the latest of a long line of people who have responsibility for any magical shenanigans in London’s Chinatown, so 1) the Folly/Nightingale don’t have to worry about it and 2) Chinatown doesn’t have to be offended by their attempts to worry about it. He’s dating Guleed and teaching her cool martial arts magic. Whether she has other demi-monde contacts is not yet clear.
· Who is Chorley’s mole within the Met? Probably not Seawoll, Stephanopoulos, Richard Folsom, Guleed, or Carey, due to the security practices put in place during Operation Jennifer. But if not any of them….then who?
· How/why the fox knows about [Skygarden and Chorley], (and why it would tell Abigail) According to Abigail, the talking foxes view themselves as secret agents, and someone like Chorley would naturally draw their attention. Why they do so and who they think they should be reporting to is still unclear (but may be elucidated in the Abigail novella).
STILL BURIED IN THE SHED SOMEWHERE:
· What about the paintings of Molly and a blue-eyed elderly man who looks like Nightingale that Peter found in the coach house?
· Are there really werewolves or just creepy magic trackers called werewolves? (I’m waiting for them to turn up.)
· Why does Fleet have a captain of dogs? What do her dogs do? (Is this related to the werewolves? Were-dogs?)
· What’s the actual connection between Wheatcroft, FM1 (Woodville-Gentle, if that’s him) and FM2? Did he train them both, or did W-G train FM2? NB: Unlikely to be directly answered now Chorley is dead.
· What’s up with Abigail’s apparently useless protection charm?
· Is there a special reason that Nightingale is called The Nightingale? (+ is he strong/good at magic because of hard work or something else.)
· People I’d like to know more about: Nightingale’s uncle, David Mellenby, Nightingale’s family.
· How much do senior officers in the Met really know about the Folly/Nightingale/magic? Is it well-known that Nightingale has been running the Folly since the 1940s?
· How did Nightingale learn the language Father Thames speaks?
· How much does Nightingale and/or Walid know/suspect about the deaging thing? How much of this aren’t he/they telling Peter?
· How did Walid and Nightingale meet?
· Are there aliens?
· Was the 1911 decrease of odd magical activity in Herefordshire linked to Molly?
· Why does Seawoll dislike Nightingale so viscerally?
· Did Peter really drop architecture because of his draughtsmanship or was it something else? Is it related to why his chemistry teacher wrote that letter to the newspaper?
· How active is the ex-wizard grapevine, really? Is the FM connected to it at all?
· What was the Faceless Man actually planning on doing with his Crossrail lair? Why build it so close to the Folly?
· What happens if one river tries to userp, unseat or in any way properly fight another? Are the results ‘mythic’?
· Was Emma Wall really a waste of space? As a character she is a bit of a smoking gun - red herring, or something else? She was living next door to our two, and *in* one of the flats where… stuff was being put. Any happily waltzed out on d-day. Peter never really got a chance to speak to her - but Lesley did, and was the one to dismiss her from suspicion. Which is suspicious (to me)!
· Although we found out after that he’s been around for much longer, Nightingale said that Father Thames was definitely the same person in 1914. So presumably they met then… In what circumstances?
· Are fae genetically different to other humans? Are they human? What about changelings (like Zoe in FS) - and will she get in contact with Dr Walid? NB: Dr Vaughan is getting some genomes sequenced, so answers to this question may be forthcoming....
· What did Lesley say to her family about what happened to her face? Do they know about magic?
· Just how much of an age gap is there between Peter’s parents?
· Why did the Virtuous Men blame the British for Ettersberg? What was the agreement between them that Nightingale was referring to?
· Postmartin made a show of wanting to get Peter alone to have a ”big” talk with him. Yet, the discussion we, the readers have witnessed was relatively small. Nightingale only arrived to The Eagle and the Child an hour later. What was said between Postmartin and Peter in the meantime?
· Peter’s narration at certain points (like Chapter 14 in Moon Over Soho) waivers between past and present tense, and he is occasionally referring to events in (presumably) later books. Just what point in the future is Peter actually narrating these books?
· When Nightingale got an infection in MoS, how did Walid know? Did Molly phone him and do her Nightingale’s being an idiot silence, or was he just visiting anyway?
· What does Molly do on her days off?
· When Nightingale doesn’t go to Peter’s parents’ for Christmas, did his not wanting to leave Molly excuse have any truth to it, or did he just say that so Peter didn’t realise that Nightingale planned to work (and so Peter didn’t feel he should be missing his own Christmas to help)/ he had a reasonable excuse to not go to Peter’s family’s Christmas celebrations?
· (tongue-in-cheek) What would have happened if Peter and Lesley had given Molly a Heston Blumenthal cookbook?
· What’s the deal with Lady Helena (and Caroline) - are they connected to Chorley and/or Lesley’s face being healed?
· What does Caroline want to escape from? What was she doing posing as a cleaning lady at the County Gard offices?
· What do the Virginian Gentlemen want, and how connected are they with the American government?
· What’s their specific definition of a ‘shade’?
· When and how did MI5 learn about magic, and do they have any practitioners of their own?
· Was Christina Chorley a practitioner, possessed, or something else?
· Who sold and bought Molly, Foxglove, 'Charlotte' (the Pale Nanny), and 'Alice' (the Pale Lady)? Where were Foxglove, Charlotte, and Alice before they were put in the oubliette and rescued by Woodville-Gentle and then Chorley? Where is the fifth girl who was with them before they were split up?
· Is it important that Walbrook is also Isis of London? Are there any other Isis-figures in the UK and Europe (aside from Isis who is married to Oxley, and is probably an Isis of Oxford?)
· Are there any other non-Mama-Thames tidal Rivers? What exactly is Lea’s relationship with Mama Thames, as they see it?
· What WAS Chorley's master plan, aside from ‘become Merlin, Profit!’?
· How is the Difference Engine linked to magic, and why? NB: May be answered in ‘False Value’, which is about computing to some degree
· Who or what is killing talking foxes (as Peter discovers in The Furthest Station)? Why?

Has only ever been able to buy taped live performances off the burners at his school, and so is kind of mind-blown to actually be at one in the flesh
Shows up early to tailgate/kick it with the metalhead crowd (starts blabbering about 60s’, 70s’, and 80s’ rock with at least five different groups of people)
Matching band tees for Huggins and his partner?
That question is met with a resounding yes (our resident teddy bear spent the entire night before decorating them)
Lets his s/o sit on his shoulders for the majority of the performance...
... yet also manages to keep a beer in his hand the whole time somehow
I don’t even know, man - dude can balance a Solo cup full of Budweiser and his fully grown beloved without flaw
Functioning alcoholism, folks - it’s an art
Randomly tickles his s/o’s sides/sways them around on top of him to the music
Lots of drunken singing (*cough* screaming *cough*) along with the band
Tries to get up on stage during the finale (because intoxication), but gets booted off by security
Insists that he and his s/o should try to sneak backstage and meet the band after the show, but ultimately passes out and needs to be driven home
What can I say? Drunk Huggins 1.) slurs everything, and 2.) is mischievous
... It’s really good that you didn’t try to sneak backstage though
That was a terrible idea
Henry
Didn’t want to come to the show, but let his s/o drag him along
Mostly because relationship Bowers = soft Bowers, but also because Butch took the day off work that day
Tries to start a fight with literally everyone that bumps into him (aka: 70% of the crowd)
In general, acts like the one tense needle in a haystack of party people
I.e. Won’t eat or drink anything, stands rigidly straight, watches the people around him as if they’re up to something, etc.
Basically just radiates that natural “Bowers” vibe despite the fact that the setting isn’t suited to it anymore
Doesn’t sing/respond to the music at all once the show starts...
... but is straight-up enthralled by the concept of the mosh pit
Seriously. Just stands and stares at it for a good few minutes, completely ignoring the stage
Never decides to join in though, because Henry isn’t about that “fair fight” life
Rolls his eyes every time his partner sings along with the band
Eventually starts mumbling lyrics under his breath/nodding his head along to the beat, but stops every time his s/o looks over at him
Yeah... you basically brought a walking corpse as your concert date
Have fun with your socially inept, perpetually angry boyfriend
Patrick
Doesn’t care about the music part of this at all - just came to fuck shit up
Didn’t even know what band he and his partner were seeing until they showed up early to tailgate
Takes food from people’s cars/trucks/grills mid-conversation so they won’t notice (i.e. hiding in plain sight)
Also steals a couples’ tickets immediately before the show, and sells them back to them saying he “just had extras”
Moral of the story: Hockstetter is never a kind soul, folks - if he has what you need, he’s probably the one that took it from you in the first place
“Encourages” his s/o to jump into the mosh pit (aka: tries to physically force them into it while laughing like a maniac)
Eventually accepts that they won’t do it though, and dives headfirst into it himself
... the mosh pit was disbanded by security a few minutes later though, because people started dropping with severe injuries (random stab wounds, 2nd degree burns, etc.)
Screams out the lyrics with his s/o every time the band lets the audience sing along
Goes into a literal trance when everyone puts their lighters in the air at the same time
Probably the most “at peace” facial expression his partner ever sees Patrick make - just stares out at the field of flame in front of him, and barely seems to be processing it
... But you know what Hockstetter was thinking about?
He was thinking about how he wished he had brought his hair spray, so he could light up 80% of the crowd at the same time with one spritz
... Yeah. His train of thought was less than wholesome, and we’re all extremely surprised by this, I’m sure
In the end, slightly murdery, but overall a fun experience
His s/o better be down to try to sneak backstage after the performance, though - unlike Belch, Hockstetter can actually make that shit happen
Victor
Doesn’t know the band well, but is happy to be at a concert nonetheless
Spent the last few days familiarizing himself with the band’s music so he would be able to follow along with the songs
Doesn’t sing much, but moves to the music a lot
I.e. Nods his head a lot, rocks his body back and forth to the beat - “cool guy” moves
Cuts loose when it comes to headbanging, though
Like... legit.
What can I say? Criss gives no fucks when “Welcome to the Jungle” is playing, so shut your mouth and stand at a safe distance
Randomly disappears from his seat in the middle of the show...
... and comes back with an armful of band merch for his partner (hat, t-shirt, complimentary hot dog - the works)
Keeps an arm around his s/o and sings along with them after some adorable urging (Victor can never resist the dough eyes)
Whenever a slow song plays, pulls his partner to a secluded part of the venue beside the stage to dance with them in private
... which inevitably leads to a highly romantic make-out session every time
Ends the night with a cheap, late-night meal at the local diner, and much talking about the extreme amounts of fun had at the concert
Is it a dream date?
I’ll let you decide.
... Yes, it’s a dream date.

Kolb Cycle - Cards for Play
Experience - a brief description
The most meaningful Creative Technologies experience for me thus far was the ‘Cards for Play’ project. The brief for the project was to create a card experience which encourages or facilitates play, this doesn’t necessarily mean a card game but that was the direction we as a group decided to head in.
Our three main pillars for our game were fantasy, fellowship, and challenge. Using the three pillars we created our statement of intent for our card experience -- “To encourage a fellowship between individuals by making them go through a fantasy challenge together.”
The game that we created as a team was a game that encouraged individuals to share interests with one another without actually conversing in an awkward manner. The objective of the game is for one person to become the decktator, and he would then create a ‘code word’ using the provided letter cards. The rest of the people work together to give hints for a word they all unanimously have in their mind without the decktator finding out. There are also topic cards that the specific word must correlate to. On the count of three if an upwards of two people say the same word, one letter card is revealed. The group wins when they fully reveal the code word. It is as beneficial, and fun with already established friend groups, as it makes it harder for them to come up with words to think of since they spend a lot of time together.
I hold this experience with utmost significance since it was the first academic activity that I was actually pushed out of my comfort zone for. Leading up to university, I’ve never been on unfamiliar ground with new faces. It actually surprised me how I looked forward to every studio session. From the early mornings, to the naps on the bus on the way home, I absolutely enjoyed school for once, and it was more than just seeing friends, the workload was just as entertaining. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends to begin BCT with, and I hope to remain good friends with them throughout the coming years. The teamwork we had was just incredible and everyone worked with purpose, and I believe it showed on our final product which I as well as hopefully everyone else in my cards for play group take great pride in.
Observation and Analysis.
Starting off from our early play tests to the final few, the one consistent feedback that we got was that when the participants read the list of rules we crafted they would almost always look visibly confused for about five minutes or so before Ashton, or someone else jumped in to help them get the ball rolling.
Another aspect that that we weren’t aware of until Charles brought it to light was our overall game aesthetic. At first we just kind of unanimously decided on a minimal game design, but we never thought to question as to why we were doing that. Does it go with our game theme? Do we even have a game theme? Does that factor in the difficulty in explanation? This was when we realized why it was so hard to word the rules in a way that it was easily explainable. It’s like trying to explain a color to a colorblind person -- of course we know how the game is played, and we know that it’s simple, but they won’t understand it unless they themselves see it.
Patrick and Chris propose a Russian-socialist theme at first, I as well as some of the group didn’t really take a liking to the idea and just kind of shrugged it off. They were persistent however, and eventually the group warmed up to the idea and it made sense. They explained it in a way that the letters would create a code, and the players guessing were going against the regime -- rebels. Now that we had a theme and our own technical jargon for the game it made it easier to lay out on to the rules page. To go along with the rule page we crafted a playful Russian-socialist themed tutorial video. Together the two useful forms of information that had a consistent theme throughout, made for a very entertaining presentation on the day of.
(video)
Through group cooperation we were able to solve the two consistent anomalies we ran into throughout the duration of this project.
On presentation day, a key moment that I remember vividly was when our group took to the table of desks to present, the crowd immediately tuned in, and zoned in to the cluster of desks amidst the crowd. From the presentation video, to the game play demonstration, I believe we had the attention of every single student in the classroom. I overheard others behind me muttering “...this is my favorite game…” Which made me quiet happy. Ben criticized every group and had feedback for each one, but when it came to ours he had very little to say, and actually commended our efforts on not trying to fix every definitive problem with the game, and let the mechanics do it for themselves. He appreciated how we had a ‘grey-area’. It may just be because we were the last group and that the studio session had ended but I’ll take it as a victory. (game play video)
Learn and Reflect
“Instead, he argued that true breakthroughs arise in a totally different way -when the discovery of anomalies leads scientists to question the paradigm, and this, in turn, leads to a scientific revolution that he termed paradigm shift” Orman (2016). This got me thinking back to the first week of the Cards for Play project. As a group we began with a booth idea in mind, where two individuals are placed inside a room, with a wall dividing them. The objective was to have the two communicate only through the cards we would provide. We had consecutive days of no progress with the game. We started to question the paradigm , the game experience, and asked ourselves if at the current point we were at, with the time we currently have could we accomplish it. It was too ambitious of an idea, as well as I think a bit like forced socializing. Leading to the final moments of having to decide on a final game experience we decided to ditch it for the game that we ended with, which at the time we called the ‘Jinx’ game. In Kuhn’s terms, this would be paradigm shift, or a scientific revolution. The anomalies we had with the previous paradigm were too great, so we looked to the outside as Goldberg (1998), says.
“Most of us like to be around people just like ourselves. WE look for people who “fit in” -- people who are “our kind of folks”. When we form teams, we think it will be smoother therefore better if everyone on the team is the same kind of person.” Glenn (2009). I think this is why our group functioned efficiently and got along really well. We were all different people. We went into the course with open minds prepared to work but also have fun. I myself, am not a very confident speaker in front of groups, but Ashton, Chris, and Patrick, don’t mind it as much thus make up for lack thereof. We acknowledge that we as well as everyone else in the BCT program are our own person and appreciate the differences because of it. We have our strengths and weaknesses, and addressed them at the start to coordinate and divide the workload according to skillset.
Looking to the future, I hope to develop more creative skills, and become a more valuable asset that the group can depend on, as well as revolve around. I also hope to become a more approachable group member.

Curatorial Statement
Although it is often thought that videogames are a shallow form of entertainment, I chose these pieces to prove otherwise. Each of these videogames is a piece of art expressing a philosophical lesson or question. I was especially focused on how the player relates to these videogames. For my gallery I selected Passage by Jason Rohrer, To The Moon by Kan Gao, Undertale by Toby Fox, Creatures Such As We by Lynnea Glasser and The Beginner’s Guide by Davey Wreden.
It is true that some games have no substantial message, but if one does, is it then considered to be a piece of art? I found differing opinions on the subject in Games Can Never Be Art by Roger Ebert and Perspectives on Videogames as Art by Jeroen Bourgonjon, Geert Vandermeersche and Kris Rutten. Roger Ebert argues, as the title indicates, that games can never be art. In Ebert’s piece there is a quotation which is applied to videogames, "Art is the process of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions” (Ebert). Ebert finds issues with this definition, as well as others, finding there to be exception almost everything. In the end he does correct himself though, saying, "No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets" (Ebert). But I have to disagree with him. As he writes, based on conversations with an advocate for games as art, it is possible that art should be judged within their own time period, to truly be able to distinguish what was genius and what was not, during the time. But I would counter that many artists only became critically acclaimed after they passed. In this case, when does the art become real art? Simply when enough people like it? No, I believe that anything which is intended to carry a message to the viewer or player is a form of art, regardless of how many people like it.
In their paper, Jeroen Bourgonjon, Geert Vandermeersche and Kris Rutten enforce this belief, but also reveal an important aspect of the current gaming world. Recently game developers have become more aware of the familiar tropes that videogames have always followed: shooters, racers, fliers and builders. They believed that videogames were not really art when they took these forms. The games lacked depth and were only for entertainment purposes, not to make the player think (Bourgonjon, et al.). But now, with this awareness, developers have begun to branch out into different genres. Many of these developers are, in fact, indie. Perhaps this can be explained by a lack of corporate or social influence on these companies.
But how do game developers relate to the people who play their games? And how do players relate to the games that developers make? Shall we play a game?: The performative interactivity of video games has some of the answers, but really, these questions are still being figured out. The author, Micheal J. Beck, emphasizes the players place in the relationship. He explains that people in videogames will closely associate the avatar with themselves. They can do this even to the extent that is a level of cognitive dissonance in cases where the player needs to act unlike themselves within a game (Beck). However, he explains that this may be more likely in games where the player makes choices in order to arrive at a certain ending. They have greater control over their avatar, increasing the connection to their character and to the game (Beck).
This brings us to our first game, The Beginner’s Guide. The Beginner’s Guide was created by Davey Wreden. The entire game is a narration by Wreden of his relationship with another developer named Coda. Through a series of puzzles the player discovers that the narrator may not be trustworthy. The two developers co-developed a game and Wreden began to show it off without Coda’s permission. This causes Coda to separate himself from the relationship. Wreden begins to pick apart all of Coda’s work, looking for clues on his friend’s mental state. Based on what you/he finds, he determines that Coda is actually depressed and unhappy with his own work. Coda believes that Wreden’s act of projecting his own beliefs onto the games takes away from them. It appears to violate the line between game developer, game and player. Perhaps intended, Wreden creates the same effect in his own game. He provokes players to project their own thoughts onto the game. Patrick Klepeck makes some great points in his paper The Controversy Over A Video Game's Suggestion Of A Crime, where he evaluates The Beginner’s Guide. Today, because Wreden has chosen to be silent on the matter, people are still developing theories about whether or not this was a work of fiction or nonfiction. They also debate whether this means that the work Wreden shared was actually technically stolen by being distributed without the consent of Coda. This game addresses deep philosophical questions about what artists consent to when they have produced something (Klepeck). Should their intentions be taken into account? Can the player project, like Wreden, their own assumptions onto the games’ maker? Should they? How much of themselves should developers place in their games? Wreden is clearly trying to provoke these questions, by using his own name to insinuate himself into his game. It appears that the game creates the same effect that Beck was speaking about, referenced earlier, a feeling of cognitive dissonance. Beck writes that that, “The Beginner’s Guide disturbed me. It felt invasive—predatory, even. The mere possibility that Wreden had repurposed Coda’s work for his own, selfish purposes was uncomfortable to consider” (Beck).
The next game I found is Creatures Such As We, made by Lynnea Glasser. It is a game that follows the same structure of Depressions Quest, allowing the player to have control over the main characters choices. In this game the main character is a tour guide on the moon. In her off time this character plays videogames but ends up being upset by the game’s unsatisfactory ending. Luckily, her next tour group consists of the people who made that very game. The game begins to take on a dating-sim feeling, as the character decides whether to romance certain characters in the tour group or to stay strictly professional. The really fascinating part of the game, though, is the commentary on the relationship between the game and the player. The game addresses whether or not developers actually owe positive endings to players. Players often go into a game thinking that by the end, their character will have reached a satisfactory outcome. When this doesn’t happen, the player feels betrayed by the developer, often deciding that they do not like the game and it is bad. Game developers often walk a fine line between pleasing players and satisfying their own intentions. The great thing about these new, small indie games is that they do not necessarily need to cater to players desires. They are allowing a new front in games that is working to combine entertainment with important messages.
The third game I found was To The Moon, a videogame created by Kan Gao of Freebird Games. The game is based in the future, where people have figured out how to manipulate memories. In this case, they are manipulating them to give dying people their last wishes. Two scientists go to perform this job on a man named Johnny, who is on his death bed. Johnny has false memories, creating the need for the two scientists, controlled by the player, to look around for clues outside and inside Johnny’s head. All they know is that his last wish is to go to the moon. It is found that Johnny had a wife, and that she had a sort of low-functioning form of Asperger’s. Because she could not directly tell Johnny, she kept leaving hints about something Johnny had forgotten from when they were kids. He doesn’t understand her, and he falls ill while feeling this guilt. In the end of the game it is revealed that he couldn’t keep the promise because of a tragic loss and a consequent issue that causes him to lose some memory (Gao). This game is incredibly emotional and sentimental, with very beautiful imagery and narration. It is meant to provoke strong feelings in the player and make them think about their own lives. It touches on topics like guilt, loss and death. I think, most of all, that this game is a message to the player, telling them to resolve problems with the people important to them in life. Life is fleeting and unfortunately, in this age, we don’t have the technology to grant last wishes.
The fourth game I looked at is Undertale. This game was developed almost solely by Toby Fox, including most of the score and art. In this game the player plays as a young child who has fallen down a hole and into the world of the Underground. In the Underground the character is taken in by a motherly goat-like monster but decide the player decides that they need to get back to the human world. To get there, the player needs to go through the entire underground but they have choices to make. When players encounter monsters, they can choose to either use mercy on the monsters or fight them in order to defeat and progress. This, and other interactions with NPC’s, will determine the ending that the player receives. If the player chooses to never harm a monster, then there is a great ending where the player and all of the monsters, who also want to be free, escape to the human world. Along the way the player encounters funny characters, pun-filled dialogue and the mystery behind the main antagonist, an odd little flower named Flowey. This game is interesting because it really gives players the opportunity to depart from the typical trope of violence common in videogames. It gives players the option, if they really want to use violence, to do so, but gives another option that I think is just as entertaining. I think this game is a clear comment on the amount of violence in the gaming industry and in society. Toby Fox used the structure of a dungeon crawler, where fighting is the expected action, intentionally. Undertale is actually advertised as, “an rpg where you don’t have to destroy anyone” on its official website (Fox). What Undertale lacks in combat (if you do the pacifist route) it makes up for in humor, heart and story.
The last game I explored is Passage. It was developed by Jason Rohrer, a Cornell graduate who began to ponder life and death when a childhood friend passed away. In the beginning of the game you start at the far left of the screen, only able to move right. The game is purposely designed to be narrow, to create the idea of this timeline. As time progresses and you keep going to the right and the center shifts to the right. You begin creeping towards the other side of the screen. As you do your character becomes older, until he eventually passes away and becomes a tombstone. While you progress through the beginning of life to the end you can make several decisions that will affect game play. You have the opportunity to have a wife, however, taking a wife limits what you are able to do. There is treasure that cannot be reached if you choose to have a wife. I think this is addressing how having a life partner can limit options in life but can also make your life happier. Although you now cannot reach as much treasure, the creator himself says that having companion is more enjoyable (Rohrer). Throughout the game, either way, your goal is to collect treasure and walk around obstacles. Having a wife reduces the treasure you can get but when you die, your wife is buried with you. I also found this game to address materialism. Although you can gather treasure with or without a partner, no matter how much you get your avatar will die in the end. Perhaps it is a somewhat melancholy message, but I look at it as advice to live life to the fullest without obsessing over material things.
In conclusion, these games all have substantial messages that the game developers have intended to impart to the player. Or at least, that is what I would like to conclude. However, I think it is interesting to ponder the philosophical questions brought up by Davey Wreden regarding videogames. Although I know for a fact that Passage and Undertale were created for the reasons I stated, it is difficult to say whether or not I have projected my own world views onto the remaining games. It could be that I, as the player, am merely seeing what I want to see. It is an interesting question, but either way, each of these games stands apart from the standard games that exist today. These games are often not as popular as the mainstream first person shooters but have substantial messages that players can interpret in their own ways. After all, this is the definition of art. Who is to say what Leonardo Da Vinci intended people to think when they viewed the Mona Lisa and who is to say what a game developer has intended someone to view in their game? I think one of the most interesting lines I found in curating this gallery was on Jason Rohrer’s site. Before giving an account of his game he wrote right at the top, “Your interpretation of the game is more important than my intentions. Please play the game before you read this” (Rohrer).

A Guide on Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) has always been a little confusing to performance coaches and sports medicine professionals because the research is cloudy at best. Many of the reasons behind the limitations of science are the ethical boundaries you need to navigate, and the expectations you have with the results of those studies. I recently spent more time working with EMS, as more and more athletes are using EMS devices on their own and we are dealing with the hangover of injuries still lingering in the off-season. What I have learned is that the science is not perfect and there are no best practices.
There has been a resurgence in EMS in sport over the last five years because of Bill Knowles, Derek Hansen, and Henk Kraaijenhof sharing their experiences with athletes. I believe that EMS suit inluding electrostimulation vest has a place in sports performance and the rehabilitation of athletes, but we don’t have a solid explanation of why some athletes don’t respond to it while others seem to come alive from it. In this first piece, I will review some of the current literature on EMS and present a healthy perspective on this modality. (Part 2 will be published as “The Top 6 EMS Protocols for Sports Performance.”)
A Brief History of Electrical Muscle Stimulation in Modern Sport
Without getting into any unnecessary background on electrotherapy (such as a retelling of the way the ancient civilizations used electric fish or citing references to Volta and Galvani), it’s valuable to know how e-stim or EMS has been part of sport in the last few decades. Outside of product design, very little innovation has occurred since the 1950s, making EMS more of an art than a science. Coaches and therapists are sometimes frustrated because transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS for short, gets confused with sports electrostimulation.
To understand the difference between TENS and EMS, you need to know just a little bit about engineering and biology. TENS targets the sensory nerves, while EMS attacks the motor nerve and attempts to recruit as many muscle fibers as possible. TENS is currently used—mainly in vain, in my opinion—to manage pain. In 1965, Ronald Melzack and Patrick Wall proposed the “gate control theory” of pain. What we know about the pain experience is extremely complex and personal, making the TENS intervention for sport very dated and extremely limited for athletes. Some research has shown positive findings, but the modality method of working with athletes in pain is lazy and proven unproductive in clinical research.
EMS focuses mainly on sending current to muscle groups in the hope of eliciting either a recovery response or a performance response later. Based on the current literature, recovery indices appear very limited, and performance benefits have shown up enough with some populations—including athletes—to be accepted as valid complementary treatments. The truth is that our understanding of electrostimulation is usually confined to a few studies on stroke victims and post-surgical wasting, and nothing I have seen has excited me.
What interests me, instead, are the clinicians who have used EMS creatively. Some of the studies on cellular and performance outcomes are strong enough to show that EMS isn’t just a placebo. I have used the Compex systems for nearly 20 years, and have some experience with the Marc Pro, PowerDot, Globus, and ARPwave. If I had to conclude which I think works best, it will be a short answer: All of them work, so choose one based on your needs and not its features.
If you were to go to a medical bookstore and check the physical therapy section on EMS, you would see that it tends to be a set of protocols based on pad placement, current settings, and scheduling sessions. This approach is nowhere near the same as what the modern clinician does and, since we are now entering the bionic athlete era with gait retraining, this only widens the gap between practice and research. It’s easy to shout that you’re ahead of the research, but without evidence, much of what clinicians do becomes like the dated RICE protocol that we still see people clinging to.
A Rapid Review of Electricity for Coaches and Therapists
Electric current can flow in different ways, such as through a wire, or something lesser known, such as a plasma state. The current generated from a muscle electrostimulator uses a conductive pad to transfer through the skin, causing the muscle to contract. The specifics of the muscle contraction will come later, but the important information is that electricity from medical muscle stimulators is more complicated than voltage and ampere. Electricity is not just about whether something is “on” or “off,” and we often take much of the technology we use for granted, especially the safety of the muscle stimulators. Most companies that get involved with e-stim devices are regulated, but it’s up to the consumer to do their homework on the quality of the product.
Experienced coaches and therapists commonly refer to stimulation parameters and share their practices, including the use of different types of settings, such as Russian Stimulation or strength protocols. Stimulation parameters and waveforms can be the subject of their own article but, for the most part, duty cycle, frequency, intensity, and ramp details are part of electrotherapy theory, but are not very well-documented. Regardless of the intimate details, many parallels exist between classic training principles and the current clinical practices of EMS use. Cycles, or waves of energy, are part of a “unified training theory” proposed by several coaches and sport scientists. EMS should be used to improve athletes, similarly to loading the body with training or rehabilitation.
Companies must do their job, not only to prove their machines are delivering exactly what they promise, but also to ensure that their products are used as intended. Most companies have terrible product education, and visiting their YouTube channels makes me cringe more than their highest simulator settings.
The Science of Electrical Contractions With Muscle
Sending electricity through a muscle group sounds like a bad science fiction movie, but that’s precisely what athletes are willing to do to get or feel better. It’s a priority to know what EMS can do physiologically and what is likely ineffective. Five years ago, pioneering researcher Nicola Maffiuletti summarized the differences between a normal muscular contraction and one from electrical stimulation in his NSCA journal article. The two types of contractions have similarities and differences that a coach should know. Overall, EMS is not going to make a major difference. However, like all things in sports training, the little things matter.
One development that throws this concept out the window is the rise in functional electrical muscle stimulation, equipped with electrostimulation shorts, which incorporates active training with the simultaneous overlay of EMS. While we can assume that the merging of both contractions will yield a hybrid result, most of the research is with disease models and only clinical rehabilitation has shown merit with this in early post-operation subjects. I have yet to see a single study with elite athletes performing EMS in conjunction with conventional training, but the case reports and work with spinal cord injury patients is promising.
Finally, EMS is used to help with neuromuscular adaptations and, while sessions may prevent atrophy, the improvements are from neural drive-like mechanisms, not from increased protein synthesis rates. EMS doesn’t directly create hypertrophy changes to the muscle, and a study on nutrition and e-stim showed no acute changes.
What is also important to know is that electrically stimulated muscles are, for the most part, superficial, and that is useful for propulsive muscle groups. Some rogue therapists are using fine needle EMS with low current for deeper muscle penetration for rehabilitation purposes. Most EMS experiences are one muscle at a time, but some athletes are getting simultaneous total body sessions. Nobody knows if total bodywork is more time-efficient or if a possible synergistic benefit exists, but down the road, studies will likely discover if there is a value beyond convenience.
The Scientific Benefits of Stimulating the Neuromuscular System
If you were to read a catalog of features and settings for a personal e-stim device, the list would be very long, ranging from relaxation massage all the way to explosive strength. While, technically, different settings will have unique stimulation protocols from the device programming in the electrostimulation center, the reality is that only three purposes exist with EMS and the research is enough to form a realistic expectation. The three EMS benefits are strength training, rehabilitation, and a little regeneration. Distilling the benefits more, you can make an argument that EMS helps with general muscle strength and facilitates low-level recovery for travel. That’s about it, but it’s enough to warrant investing in it, especially when sport moves into the unfortunate health compromise for winning.
Sports Performance
EMS and strength, and the results that may lead to jump and sprint performance, are mixed in the research. However, enough research shows that if EMS is done with specific protocols, a positive result is possible, especially with the less-trained athlete. So far, much of the work has been done with soccer, and some recent investigations of youth jumping performance and plyometrics had favorable outcomes.

Can you do Turnadette and family for the headcannon thing please?
I absolutely can!
This did end up being mostly about Turner Gen 2s’ futures, so my apologies if that doesn’t entirely fit the brief.
1. The Turners end up sending Angela and Teddy to a new local nursery, that’s run by one of Val’s cousins. It’s also an important resource for Shelagh, as she forms friendships with other other working mothers. Magda does send the Turners a letter from Paris to let them know she is well and they remain in contact with her, their letters always containing notes (or drawings) from each member of the family.
2. Though Tim was happy with another little sibling, he’s very conscious of the age difference between him and the littles. He struggles with the idea that Teddy will still be very young when Tim goes off to school, and likely won’t remember him if he’s gone for long periods of time. As such, he chooses to stay close to home for uni, and his parents also gift him a second-hand car so he can travel between school and home fairly easily. Sister Winifred offers to teach him how to drive, but Nurse Crane nixes use of her car, and Patrick will only let Tim drive the MG if he’s doing the teaching (Shelagh can drive, but hates driving in London as it’s so busy, so she’s fairly rusty). Tim also meets his first boyfriend at university, and for some time only refers to him as a friend. Patsy and Delia meet him when they’re all at Nonnatus for a visit, and encourage Tim to tell his parents. He does, and though they struggle to understand a bit at first, they love and support him, and Douglas really is a nice boy.
3. Angela grows up to be taller than her father and brothers (and her mother, it goes without saying), which she’s initially rather embarrassed about. Her family all think this is excellent though and encourage her to stand tall. Of course they also remind her that Chummy is One Tall Lady and that’s comforting as well.
4. Angela loves the caring aspect of medicine that her parents hold in high importance, but has a strong desire to work behind the scenes and fix some of the flaws in healthcare systems (her mother has a foot in this too, even more so as medicine shifts more from community health centres like the maternity home to hospitals). While she is a trained nurse, Angela works for most of her career on the administrative end of things, working to change things like lack of health care in lower-income neighbourhoods, the hierarchical culture of hospitals (she pushes for hospitals functioning as healthcare teams), access to contraception and abortion, conditions in mother & baby homes, and openness in the adoption process.
5. Teddy somewhat fits the pattern of the rebellious younger child and becomes an artist. He’s mostly a visual artist, though like his mother and brother, he’s musically gifted as well (Patrick and Angela love to join in when the family sings, but mostly they appreciate the music more than they participate.) While he’s keenly interested in the arts scene of the time, he does have a steady job as a medical illustrator that he enjoys as medicine has always carried comforting memories of his childhood, even if it’s not quite his niche. His parents and siblings are proud of him and always come to his openings, often with various Nonnatuns.

Rosa’s Team
Since starting her trek around the region to collect gym badges and enter the Unova League, Rosa has managed to build up a rather impressive team. her Pokemon will be separated into groups based on how often they are on her main battling team and will be listed in catch-order. All of her teammates are named after famous actors and actresses from her world or ours. Further updates to her team will be made in the future, should it be needed. Gonna put this under a read more because it’s frickin long, yo.
Core Team
Pokemon in the Core Team are her main battlers and ones she usually has on her at any given moment. Their levels range from the mid to high 60s.
Species: Sawsbuck
Name: Sir Patrick Stewart
Ability: Sap Sipper
Nature: Adamant
Type: Normal/Grass
Description: Sawsbuck is male and was Rosa’s first Pokemon and her #1 partner, first meeting her as a young Deerling in the Forest Verde near her home. The two bonded rather quickly and became as close as siblings. Like Rosa, he wants to make it big in the performance world, even co-staring with Rosa in a number of PokeStar Studios films that gathered a cult following. Well adored by fans for his role as Sven in the hit film Frozen, where Rosa starred as Princess Anna. He can also be a rather prideful being with a bit of a stubborn streak, tying to his Nature. This puts him at odds with Serperior, who is just as prideful but manages to get under his leaves with how smug she is compared to his more humble side. He knows the moves Horn Leech, Jump Kick, Return, and Swords Dance. He is also more than strong enough and large enough to carry Rosa around, acting as a mount for faster travel speed on land.
Species: Serperior
Name: Elizabeth Taylor
Ability: Sap SipperOvergrow
Nature: Sassy
Type: Grass
Description: Serperior is female and was a gift from Bianca, first meeting Rosa as a little Snivy at the Lookout in Aspertia. This Snivy had the same drive to fight strong trainers and make a mark in the world that her trainer did, so it would not be a stretch to say that they became close pretty darn fast. Their first success in Cheren’s Gym battle likely cemented their bond forever. Serperior started to develop an interest in acting as a Snivy, after first seeing Rosa and Deerling running through some practice scenes together. Since then, she’s starred in a number of PokeStar Studios films with Rosa, most popularly the Misadventures of Snivy Girl series. She’s as prideful as they come and knows that she’s got skills, and so isn’t afraid to rub it in when encountering those she deems inferior, tying to her Nature. She frequently gets into arguments with Sawsbuck over this sort of thing, which may or may not lead to Rosa making them spar so at least their fight can train them both up. She knows the moves Leaf Blade, Dragon Tail, Iron Tail, and Coil.
Species: Swanna
Name: Mila Kunis
Ability: Keen Eye
Nature: Modest
Type: Water/Flying
Description: Swanna is female and was one of the first Pokemon Rosa caught on her journey, first meeting her as a curious Ducklett in the waters around Route 19 and 20. At first, the Ducklett didn’t seem to care too much for battle, and it took a lot of work and training from Rosa’s end to show the young girl how much fun it could be. After that first hurdle was jumped, however, Swanna became quite a powerful asset to the team. Perhaps one of the few Pokemon Rosa owns who doesn’t care much for acting, she is completely dedicated to the art of battle. After her first few Gym Battles, she couldn’t shake the rush she felt when battling. A feeling she shares with Rosa, obviously. However, she knows that winning shouldn’t cause her to get cocky and careless. She should always be humble in victory and reflecting in defeat, tying in to her Nature. As a fellow lover of battle and a rather humble Pokemon, Swanna gets along really well with Sawsbuck. She knows the moves Hurricane, Scald, Attract, and Rain Dance. She also has the power and training to carry Rosa through the skies, acting as a mount for aerial travel.
Species: Gothitelle
Name: Christina Ricci
Ability: Shadow Tag
Nature: Calm
Type: Psychic
Description: Gothitelle is female and was caught in the middle of Rosa’s journey, first meeting her as a sneaky little Gothita in Route 5 just west of Nimbasa City. The Blue Oni to Rosa’s Red Oni, Gothitelle is one of few Pokemon (and people for that matter) able to calm Rosa down when she gets overexcited. It probably helps that the Psychic Type is able to speak directly into her mind with Telepathy. As a Gothita, her voice sounded like that of a child, and it steadily matured until she reached her current form, taking on a low and intimidating alto. The vocal equivalent of a resting bitch face. Nevertheless, she and Rosa are rather close, like all her battle partners. She’s taken an interest in acting alongside Rosa, being one of her favored partners for villainous roles, such as the dark magical girl Oriko in the cult film Puela Magi Oriko Magica. While most of the main battlers on Rosa’s team prefer to hit hard without much thought, Gothitelle is moreso the thinking type, the one to assess the situation and choose the best option moving forward, tying to her Nature. Gothitelle rather enjoys spending time with Golurk, who is one of the few Pokemon she knows that cares not for flowery language or dramatics, merely speaking the truth. She knows the moves Psychic, Thunderbolt, Calm Mind, and Trick Room.
Species: Heracross
Name: Bruce Willis
Ability: Moxie
Nature: Hardy
Type: Bug/Fighting
Description: Heracross is male and was caught in the middle of Rosa’s journey, first meeting her in the center of Lostlorn Forest just east of Nimbasa City. Rosa had been gathering some of the sweet berries that grow there, only to be attacked by an army of Combee led by this impressive Pokemon. Like a General, he commanded and coordinated the Combee, making it troublesome for even Rosa’s strongest partners to fight. In the end, she defeated him, sparking a mutual respect between them. He even asked to join Rosa, given that one of the Combee had evolved into Vespiquen and could lead the swarm without his aid. While he enjoys battling as much as any other Fighting Type, he’s taken a special interest in working behind the scenes in Rosa’s films. He’s become quite the skilled manager, helping coordinate props and lights. He’s a tough guy, spending most of his time outside of his Poke Ball so he can get more workouts in, tying to his Nature. Given that he’s so used to coordinating younger Pokemon, he’s taken Electabuzz and Magmar under his wing, acting as a mentor to them. He knows the moves Brick Break, Megahorn, Brutal Swing, and Bulk Up.
Species: Golurk
Name: The Rock
Ability: Iron Fist
Nature: Serious
Type: Ground/Ghost
Description: Golurk is a genderless, yet masculine automaton and was caught later on in Rosa’s journey, first meeting her during her trek through the cave system known as Victory Road, where she found him defending an ancient artifact that had once been in the Relic Castle. The battle was tough and left both the guardian and the trainer winded, but he fell defeated. Once Rosa explained that she merely wanted to return the damaged stone crown to the Castle, he swore himself in service to her, as his role as protector of the crown was no longer needed. He doesn’t quite understand the whole ‘movie’ thing, but the fact that humans could somehow create these moving pictures to dazzle and amaze left him fascinated. When not training or meditating, he’s usually finding someplace to recline and watch some of Rosa’s old action movies. He isn’t one for nonsense or humor, preferring to just address any situation with the honest truth, tying to his Nature. This puts him in Gothitelle’s good books, as what functions as his mind is rather peaceful and void of the chaos most humans and Pokemon possess. He knows the moves Shadow Punch, Hammer Arm, High Horsepower, and Fire Punch.
Team B
The members of Team B are generally not as combat-ready as the others. They may be younger, caught more recently, or just not as focused on battling as other party members. Some may have ultimately decided they don’t want to compete in battles anymore, even if they did in the past. Their levels vary vastly from the mid 30s to the lower 50s.
Species: Liepard
Name: Fairuza Balk
Ability: Limber
Nature: Impish
Type: Dark
Description: Liepard is female and was caught at the start of Rosa’s journey, first meeting her as a mischievous little Purrloin in Route 19 when she first went out looking for Pokemon after Bianca gave her a Pokedex. While she retained much of her prankster nature after being caught, Rosa managed to direct those tactics toward a clever battling style instead. Rosa also introduced her to the performance world early in their battling career, showing her some of her father’s old movies. Liepard’s favorite is the one where Jaun Valentine plays a vigilante hero with a Thievul by the name of Zorro. While Liepard had enjoyed her time fighting in the various Gyms around Unova, after about the 7th Gym or so she had a heart to heart with Rosa, indicating that it just wasn’t what she wanted. She certainly liked being strong, but she would rather focus her skills in acting- something that Rosa could, of course, understand. Not all her Pokemon wanted to pursue the same dual-goal of Actress and Champion. Narrowly avoiding a destruction flag that could have ended their partnership, Liepard and Rosa grew closer instead. Rosa and Liepard are known for taking villainous roles together, such as the time Rosa played a vampire princess and Liepard played her feline servant. Despite maturing a bit since her evolution, Liepard is still a trickster at heart and loves playing little pranks on people and Pokemon, tying to her Nature. She gets along best with Serperior, who has a similar level of pride and poise as her. She knows the moves Night Slash, Shadow Ball, Double Team, and Thunder Wave.
Species: Magmar
Name: Timon
Ability: Flame Body
Nature: Rash
Type: Fire
Description: Magmar is male and was hatched from an egg in the early days of Rosa’s journey, first meeting her when he popped his little Magby snout out of his shell. She had earned his egg during the Virbank City Tournament that she’d managed to win, defeating the Gym Leader Homika in the process. As a Baby Pokemon, he wasn’t the strongest in battle, but through training with his ‘brother’, Elekid, he was able to push himself toward breaking his limits more and more with each passing day. Later on, he would come under the protective wing of Heracross, who would put him through training that even the most hellish of Dark Types would find brutal. But hey, it eventually led to his evolution. So that training was certainly worthwhile. Compared to his brother, Magmar is a bit more of a thinker, taking notes from Gothitelle. He’s more willing to draw out a fight so that he can learn more about his opponent, turning their strengths against them. He is still young, though, young and impatient, tying in to his Nature. He knows the moves Flamethrower, Brick Break, Smog, and Lava Plume.
Species: Electabuzz
Name: Pumbaa
Ability: Static
Nature: Rash
Type: Electric
Description: Electabuzz is male and was hatched from an egg in the early days of Rosa’s journey, first meeting her when he popped his little Elekid claws out of his shell. She had earned his egg during the Virbank City Tournament that she’d managed to win, defeating the Gym Leader Homika in the process. As a Baby Pokemon, he wasn’t the strongest in battle, but through training with his ‘brother’, Magby, he was able to push himself toward breaking his limits more and more with each passing day. Later on, he would come under the protective wing of Heracross, who would put him through training that even the most hellish of Dark Types would find brutal. But hey, it eventually led to his evolution. So that training was certainly worthwhile. Compared to his brother, Electabuzz is far more likely to apply brute force to any situation, taking notes from Swanna. He’s more willing attack and attack and attack, relying more on sheer power than he would on careful tactics. And in some ways it really works for him, making use of his natural talent for battle. He is still young and inexperienced, which can lead to him underestimating his opponents, tying in to his Nature. He knows the moves Thunder Punch, Brick Break, Quick Attack, and Discharge.
Species: Swinub
Name: Mel Blanc
Ability: Snow Cloak
Nature: Brave
Type: Ice/Ground
Description: Swinub is male and was caught late in Rosa’s journey, first meeting her when was on the way to Opelucid City, where she stopped some Tranqiull that were bullying him. He was very young, taking to Rosa like a child to its mother. For that reason, he didn’t battle much. Nevertheless, he was constantly amazed by the lengths Rosa would take to defeat tough opponents and aspires to be as cool and powerful as her and the other members of the team some day. While he may seem skittish and shy, he is the first to stand up and show his courage in the face of adversity, being the first to attack Ghetsis’ Hydreigon despite how vastly different their levels were, tying in to his Nature. He knows the moves Ice Shard, Tackle, Mud Slap, and Endure.
