STORY: Ups And Downs 19
Dinner and Dessert
With less than two weeks to go until our big trip to New York and Connecticut, Woody called Rafael and me into his office to begin making preparations. I took notes with my new Wacom note pad. Our itinerary would look something like this:
Wednesday morning: fly to New York City, check into the St. Regis Hotel (overlooking Central Park and just two blocks from the Museum of Modern Art)
Thursday: cocktail reception in Mr. Block’s suite, followed by dinner for 10 in the Presidential Suite
Friday afternoon: Mr. Block, Woody, and I take the train to Stamford, Connecticut, and then travel by rental car to Greenwich for the art show; Rafael remaining in New York (unsupervised)
Sunday afternoon: take the train back to New York City
Monday: Mr. Block and Woody attend an international conference on LGBT+ rights at the United Nations; Rafael and I free for the day
Tuesday: Mr. Block, Woody, and I fly back to San Diego; Rafael remains in NYC for another week before flying to Spain
“We don’t always stay at five-star hotels,” said Woody, “but Mr. Block chose the St. Regis for two reasons: one, he will be entertaining a very exclusive group of gentlemen, and two, he sees this as an opportunity for the two of you to learn what constitutes first-class service. So, while we are there, take pictures and take notes. Before we check out, you will meet with the hotel manager to ask him any questions you may have. This is an exceptional learning opportunity for both of you, so make the most of it.”
After going over the general outline, Woody dismissed Rafael but kept me behind to work out details. My assignment was to make all the reservations—flights, hotels, train, rental car, and dinners. At the art show, I would be expected to provide whatever services might be needed by Mr. Block, Woody, or the show organizers.
“You’re in charge,” Woody told me, “but don’t be afraid to ask for help. Rafael has been through all of this before, so he can answer almost any question you might have. And when you talk to the sales manager at the hotel about that dinner, pull Kim into the conversation to work out the menu and other arrangements. He’s a pro at that.”
As I got up to leave Woody’s office, he called me back and handed me two things: a box containing the latest iPhone and a credit card. “Use these to make the reservations,” he said. The credit card belonged to Mr. Block’s account, but it had my name on it.
For the next week and a half, I worked my tail off, not only making the reservations and other plans for our trip, but also assisting Rafael, Ron, and Kim in their duties, learning as much as I could so that I could fill in when they took days off.
Of course, I still managed to squeeze in sexual adventures two or three times a day. I had sex before work and after work and sometimes during my lunch break, but never during work hours. I never had to look far for available or willing sex partners. They were everywhere.
I remembered what Woody had said about having sex in the limo, the barn, and the boats, so I made sure to play out those fantasies as well as quite a few others.
On the day of our departure, Ron drove the four of us (Mr. Block, Woody, Rafael, and me) to the airport in the Navigator—plenty of room for the five of us plus our luggage. Sitting next to me in the rear seat, Woody handed me an envelope containing $500 in bills of various denominations. “Remember,” he said, “you’re in charge. This money is to cover tips and any other incidentals that you can’t charge to the card. Use it wisely, but don’t be chintzy with the tips. These guys work hard to make our lives easier. The least we can do is to show them our appreciation.”
On the plane, the four of us sat in first class. I had originally booked Rafael and me in coach, but Woody made me change it. “You must constantly be watching out for anything that Mr. Block or I might need,” he said, “and you can’t do that if you’re not with us.”
Mr. Block and Woody took the aisle seats, giving Rafael and me the window seats. Since he and I couldn’t exactly chat with our bosses sitting between us, we texted each other as soon as the overhead lights went off. We joked about the flight attendants—two females in first class and two guys in the back who didn’t exactly appeal to either of us. We lamented the fact that Freddie wasn’t working that flight.
We initially dismissed the idea of having sex in the lavatory since we had both already been inducted into the “mile-high club,” but then it dawned on us: yes, we had both had sex on a plane, but not with each other. When Rafael got up to go to the lavatory, I waited about a minute and then followed him. Walking away, I heard Woody remark to Mr. Block, “They’ll be a while,” which drew a snicker from Mr. Block.
Rafael and I laughed about the fact that the lavatory in first class was bigger than the one in coach, which made it easier for him to ride my dick at 35,000 feet. At one point, we hit a little bit of turbulence, but that only drove my cock deeper into Rafael’s ass. I thought he was going to give us away when he squealed with stunned delight.
When we arrived at the St. Regis in the limo they had sent for us, the desk clerk immediately called the hotel manager, who came out to welcome us. With two cute bellhops carrying our luggage, he escorted us to the Presidential Suite, which was huge—basically a 3000-square-foot luxury apartment. It not only had two bedrooms, one for Mr. Block and one for Woody, but also a living room, a private office, and even a dining room, where our dinner would be catered. The manager, Mr. Danvers, also introduced us to Conrad, the butler assigned to the Presidential Suite. I tipped each of the bellhops $20, but Woody pulled Conrad aside and told him that Rafael and I were there to learn about superior service and would he….
“Mr. Danvers has already explained the situation to me,” Conrad assured Woody. “It will be my pleasure to assist them as well as you and Mr. Block.” Woody thanked him and slipped him a $100 bill.
The two bellhops then led Rafael and me to our rooms down the hall. Though the rooms were not suites, they were more elegant than I could have ever imagined. We had connecting rooms, each with a king-size bed.
As we settled into our respective rooms, there came a knock on my door. It was Conrad. “Mr. Block would like to have dinner at 7:00. Would you like me to reserve a table in the restaurant or will you have dinner in the suite?”
“I’ll have to call Woody and ask him,” I said, but before I could move, Conrad informed me, “Mr. Woodward said that the decision is yours to make.” When Woody said I would be in charge, he wasn’t kidding.
“Hmm. What would you recommend, Conrad?”
“I am happy to make whatever arrangements you wish, but since you will be dining in the suite tomorrow evening, perhaps you would like to try our restaurant tonight. The menu is excellent, the ambiance is quite nice, and you might become acquainted with some of our other guests.”
Conrad was understating the case. The Court restaurant was gorgeous and filled with handsome, well-dressed, and obviously rich gentlemen—mostly older, but some younger than 30. The four of us were well dressed too, Rafael and I in our new Brooks Brothers suits.
When the maitre’d asked Mr. Block if we had reservations, he and Woody remained silent and just looked at me. “Uh, reservation for Mr. Block,” I bucked up.
“Nice save,” Woody whispered to me as we were led to our table. “You’re catching on.”
I felt a twinge of embarrassment at having initially missed the cue, but hearing Woody compliment me pumped up my chest like you wouldn’t believe.
Conrad was right about the menu too. The food was delicious.
“There’s nothing on our calendar tomorrow until the cocktail reception,” observed Woody, “so what do you plan to do with your day, Joe?” My instinct was to say that I would take the time to see some of the sights of New York, but the fact that Woody directed the question to me and not to Rafael and me both, tipped me off that this might be a test.
“I think I should get together with Conrad to make sure that everything is in place for the reception and the dinner.”
An ever-so-slight nod from Woody said to me, “Go on.”
“And I think I should reconfirm our train and hotel reservations for Greenwich.”
When Woody took a very faint breath and leaned back in his chair, I knew that I had scored, but I didn’t quit there.
“Is there anything else I can do for you tomorrow, Mr. Block? Lunch reservations perhaps?”
The faint smirk on Woody’s face said to me, “Now you’re just showing off.” And I ate it up.
“That won’t be necessary,” replied Mr. Block. “I think Woody and I can take care of ourselves for a few hours. Why don’t you and Rafael use the time to get acquainted with the Big Apple? It’s a fascinating city.”
I thanked him but reminded him that I was just a phone call away if he needed anything.
When dinner was concluded and I saw the waiter approaching our table with the bill, I signaled to him to bring the check to me, which he did. After looking it over and adding a generous tip, I signed the check to my room. I think even Rafael was impressed.
As we were leaving the restaurant, we passed a table with two very handsome gentlemen whose eyes followed us out. When we got to the elevator, I said, “You guys go on up. I want to check with the concierge about sightseeing tomorrow,” which was a lie, of course. I was headed back to the restaurant to get acquainted with the two hunks.
When I approached their table, they invited me to sit down while they finished their dinner. “They have sumptuous desserts here,” I commented.
“They certainly do,” gushed one of the men, “and they’re not all on the menu apparently.” I feigned embarrassment, which they thought was adorable.
They complimented me on my new suit, which was obviously a ploy since they were both impeccably dressed themselves, and one of them asked if he could feel the material. Of course, I said yes. I’m not stupid. As he stroked the lapel between his thumb and finger, he let his hand rub against my chest, especially my nipple, which started to rise to the occasion. “Oh, man, this feels really good,” he cooed. “I’ll bet,” said his friend, who had started a seduction of his own by rubbing his leg against mine under the table.
Taking the hints, I told them about our shopping trip to Brooks Brothers and also to The Body Shop in San Diego, which led them to ask what kind of underwear I had bought and what kind I was wearing that night. “I’ll bet you look fucking hot in them,” said one of the men. “And even better out of them,” the other one dared to say.
“And your friend who was with you at dinner. Did he buy new underwear too? I wonder what he’s wearing tonight.”
“I don’t know,” I confessed. “I didn’t check before we came down to dinner, but I’m sure he’s in his room now. Maybe we could all go ask him.”
Well, I didn’t exactly have to twist their arms. They quickly finished their dinners and followed me upstairs.
When I knocked on Rafael’s door, he must have been exercising some ESP because he came to the door in his sexy underwear, which drew oohs and aahs from our two new friends. Rafael didn’t even look surprised when I led them into his room. Maybe when I said I was going to talk to the concierge, he suspected where I was really going and anticipated what the outcome would be.
The outcome, of course, was the four of us ending up naked in Rafael’s king-size bed. They both claimed to be versatile, but when they saw our dicks, they insisted on having us fuck them, which Rafael and I were perfectly happy to oblige. Actually, we swapped back and forth, fucking our respective partners for a few minutes and then, with a tag team slap of the hands, trading partners. The businessmen loved it.
As we fucked them, they occasionally leaned over to kiss each other and sometimes pulled us into kisses. It was such a delight to watch two incredibly handsome men kissing each other and kissing us. It was such a turn on…as if we needed any extra stimulus. Rafael and I both shot our loads more quickly than either of had intended and somewhat to the disappointment of the guys under us, so we tried to make up for the abbreviated fuck by sucking on their cocks, which they also unloaded more quickly than anyone would have preferred.
With our mouths full of their man cream, they kissed us again, swapping their cum with us and with each other until we ended up in a four-way cumfest.
After they got dressed and left Rafael’s room, he and I showered, but before we could finish drying off, the phone in his room rang. It was the two guys inviting us to their room. “Our husbands are back from their evening out and would like to meet you.”

I'll be part of a panel on 5/7, With Us: Artists with Disabilities on Adapting Technology for Us with Springboard for the Arts, as disabled artists hold space for each other, share tips and practices, and embody the informal motto of the disability rights movement, “Nothing about us, without us.” My fellow panelists will be Belo Cipriani and Nicole Thomas, and the conversation will be moderated by Alison Bergblom Johnson. On my end, I'll be discussing the challenges I faced with a lifelong hearing impairment, and what it's meant navigating a variety of spaces, choosing what I attend and present at, and what I've felt comfortable applying to over the years, especially as my impairment increases.
Belo Miguel Cipriani, Ed.D. is a digital inclusion strategist who became passionate about making online spaces accessible after being blinded by a group of men in 2007. His books and articles on disability issues have received numerous awards and international recognition. He has guest lectured at Yale, and, in 2020, he was appointed by Governor Tim Walz to the Minnesota Council on Disability. Through his digital access consulting firm, Oleb Media, he has helped countless organizations build inclusive websites and apps. HuffPost referred to him as an "Agent of Change" and SF Weekly named him one of the best disability advocates. Tony Coelho, the primary author and sponsor of the Americans with Disabilities Act, called him an "important voice" in disability writing. Nicole Thomas is an interdisciplinary artist and community organizer focusing on communal care, comfort, and solidarity in healing. Artwork coming from her studio balances the act of play and memory processing. Working collaboratively with the community is an integral part of their practice. They facilitate programs that are trauma-informed and encourage connection through creative storytelling. More recently, she was an artist-in-resident at the Chautauqua School of Art in Chautauqua, New York. Their work has been exhibited at various galleries including Fowler-Kellogg Art Center, Textile Center, Fresh Eye Gallery, Rosalux Gallery, and Regis Center for Art at the University of Minnesota. https://www.nicolethomas.studio/
Our moderator is Minneapolis-based artist-organizer Alison Bergblom Johnson (she/her) who collaborates with community care and art organizations from small, grassroots endeavors to very large, established institutions. Her genres and media include storytelling, creative nonfiction, installation, and collage, and her work explores gender, disability, and sexuality.
I think this will be in intriguing conversation.
Springboard for the Arts' mission is to support artists with the tools to make a living and a life, and to build just and equitable communities full of meaning, joy, and connection. Founded as an independent nonprofit in 1991, Springboard for the Arts has an innovative 30-year history of supporting artists making a living and a life and artist-led community development work.
With offices in St. Paul and Fergus Falls, Minnesota, and working nationally, they are a small and ambitious organization that gets things done. They dream big about a different world that attends to an ecosystem that supports everyone to live and love as they wish while treading gently on this only planet we share. Everything they do, they strive to model a more holistic and more equitable ecosystem in order to make a greater difference.

Elyse Knox in I Wouldn't Be in Your Shoes (William Nigh, 1948)
Cast: Don Castle, Elyse Knox, Regis Toomey, Charles D. Brown, Rory Mallinson, Robert Lowell, Bill Kennedy. Screenplay: Steve Fisher, based on a story by Cornell Wooolrich. Cinematography: Mack Stengler. Art direction: Dave Milton. Film editing: Roy V. Livingston, Otho Lovering.
I Wouldn't Be in Your Shoes is a tidy, by-the-numbers Wrong Man thriller with an eleventh-hour climax -- in short, the kind of drama that would become standard on television a few years after it was released. Tom (Don Castle) and Ann (Elyse Knox) are a young dance team getting by between bookings on Ann's pay (and tips) as an instructor in a dance hall. One night, Tom flings his shoes out the window at a yowling cat. That same night, an elderly miser in their neighborhood is murdered and robbed. Tom's shoes become an important clue in the search for the killer, leading to his conviction for murder and imprisonment on Death Row. His only hope lies in Ann's attempt to persuade the police detective, Clint Judd (Regis Toomey), with whom she has flirted at the dance hall, to find the real killer. The movie was made by Poverty Row studio Monogram, so there's nothing fancy about it. The stars are low-wattage: Castle had been a bit player at Paramount before World War II, and had trouble restarting his career after being drafted and serving in the Army Air Force. Knox was a former model whose career never quite took off before she was signed by Monogram to play the girlfriend of Joe Palooka in a series of movies based on the comic strip hero; she married football player Tom Harmon and became the mother of Mark Harmon. Regis Toomey was probably the best-known member of the cast, with an IMDb list of 273 credits, stretching from 1929 to 1985, mostly in character roles. Director William Nigh started as an actor, but turned director in 1914, working steadily for B-movie factories like Monogram. I Wouldn't Be in Your Shoes was his next-to-last feature. Mostly a straightforward movie, it does try a little too hard in a montage in which Tom, counting the hours until he goes to the chair, is haunted by echoes of the word "shoes." It comes off, unfortunately, as a little silly. Otherwise, it's solid, unpretentious, and modestly entertaining.

For the Art Tip thing: How do you keep the line between stylized and realistic? You have a very nice style and it's still rooted in real anatomy
Well, first you wanna learn some anatomy. I mentioned Proko’s anatomy for artists playlist in another ask, so I recommend that for learning more detailed stuff about anatomy. (But again, there’s a lot of anatomical terms that may be confusing and I get that, but at the very least there’s tons of visuals so hopefully it’s not too bad and you can still learn something if the language is too much.)
You don’t need to be a master at anatomy, however, in order to stylize it. Once you get the general vibe down, it’s just a matter of simplifying forms and shapes in a way that’s pleasing to your eye.
Take, for example, my hand.
Tumblr media
[ID: A black and white photo of a hand in a vague reaching position with a dark background. The arm is partly visible and a bit hairy. The edge of a sweater sleeve is visible. end ID]
Now I’ve drawn it a few times to show how to simplify it. (the simpler drawings aren’t very good but I do hope they get the point across. if not I’d be happy to redo it)
Tumblr media
[ID: A digital sketch of a hand on a white background. It is rendered with soft shading all over, and individual arm hairs have been drawn as well. end ID]
This one is drawn more realistically than I usually draw, helped by the fact that I used the photo as a direct reference the entire time. I started out sketching with basic shapes and slowly refined them until they matched the photo well enough to my liking. Shading was similar. Block out a basic shape of a shadow, then blend and refine.
Tumblr media
[ID: A digital sketch of a hand on a white background. It is rendered with limited cell shading, and arm hair is represented with a few horizontal curved lines. end ID]
This one is closer to my usual style. I’ve done basic shapes again, but refined them less and (most importantly!!) I altered them in certain ways that I simply like. I gave the knuckles more definition, I made the thumb have more corners and straighter edges, and same with the wrist. I just like the way that makes it look, it’s fun. For the shading, I just saw where the shadows were darkest and blocked those out a bit for some solid cell shading.
Tumblr media
[ID: A digital sketch of a hand. It is in a very simplified style, with rounded shapes and little detail. There is limited soft shading on one side of the arm. end ID]
This one is much less like my usual style, and much more simplified. Only the most basic shapes with just enough detail to tell you “this is a hand”. And really, that’s all you need in the end. As long as you get the point across, the nitty gritty of anatomy doesn’t matter so much.
Here’s another example, feat me trying to figure out how to draw Martin’s arms.
Tumblr media
[ID: Three labelled digital drawings of a thick and muscular arm bent at the elbow. The first drawing is the most detailed, with soft shading and defined areas of muscle and fat. It has labels around it, pointing at different areas with arrows. The labels read “more realistic”, “definition”, “softer edges” and “detailed soft-shading”. There is a label beneath the drawing saying “SIMPLIFY” with an arrow pointing to the next drawing. The second drawing is more simplified, with less defined areas and is rendered with only cell shading. Its labels read “simpler shapes”, “more defined edges and corners”, and “cell shading”. There is a label beneath the drawing saying “SIMPLIFY” with an arrow pointing to the next drawing. The last drawing is even more simplified, with round shapes and a single soft shadow. Its labels read “blob” with the letters spaced far apart, “who needs definition”, and “very simple soft shading”. end ID]
These are just a couple ways to simplify shapes, and I could probably have done better about showing you how, but if you have any more questions about it, send em my way!

protip for anyone having to do their senior thesis this year:
if you are working with one professor and not having to present your work to a larger forum, try to choose a topic that is in your field (obviously), but outside of your professor’s immediate wheelhouse if you’re worried/stressed/unable to dedicate as much time as you’d like to your thesis
obviously this won’t work in every field/situation, but if you’re in a pinch, choosing something that your professor will have a harder time judging might just save you a lot of stress
for example: my friend and i both were art history majors and were working under the same prof for our final projects. that prof is pretty well-rounded, but she specializes in renaissance arth, so neither of us wrote about the renaissance. i wrote about how the material cultures of ritual objects/folk practices intersected with larger religions, and my friend wrote about cultural exchange found in grave goods; things our prof knows a bit about, but is not an expert in
doing this could give you a bit of breathing room as far as anxieties about having every possible scrap of information present (something at least i have anxiety over). obviously don’t Lie abt info jdhfjdfh you’re still gonna need a solid argument and evidence, but as far as just getting a good grade from that one prof by the end of your last semester, discussing something they can’t judge as easily might keep you from having to worry too too much

For the prompts: Jaskier/Priscilla + Scars?
This is very much hurt/very little comfort. A mash up on TW3 plot and TWN Jaskier.
_
The goblet in Jaskier’s hand shook as silent tears fell down his face. Out of all the people in Novigrad it had to be Priscilla that had been attacked, his beautiful, shining calonetta. It wasn’t fair. It should have been him lying on the bed in the hospital room, his throat damaged and unable to speak. Priscilla would hold his hand and tell him stories to pass the time and his love would be happy and unharmed.
After all it wasn’t as if he was a stranger to pain. On his temple, hidden behind his hair was a scar from where an arrow had narrowly missed his head. Regis had looked after it well but the scar remained. Then there were his fingers, burned by Rience so many years ago. The tips of his fingers were still numb, a fact that had eventually helped his lute playing as the strings cut into the skin.
The wound on Priscilla’s throat would be no aid. Gone was her nightingale soprano and who knew if it would ever return. Yennefer was doing her best to help but Jaskier still worried. Without music and performance, he wasn’t sure what would come of their relationship. Their love and their art was so intricately weaved together that Jaskier couldn’t tell which was which.
Regardless, it should have been him. He could take it. Years travelling with his witcher and young Ciri had prepared Jaskier for anything, but not this, not losing her. Yes she would live, the healers had done a bloody brilliant job at ensuring that, but a bard without music was a sorry sight. Priscilla would be changed, scarred in more ways than one…. and Jaskier was scared.
“I love you,” he wanted to say but he couldn’t, not when the words might not be true for much longer. Who was he really trying to comfort here? Priscilla or himself?
So instead he brought her hands to his lips, and continued to watch the steady rise and fall of her chest. Then with a sad smile, he left the room.

Sola/Blood of My Blood - Coming of Age II
@secret-engima part 2 of Sola trolling everyone, and the set up to the actual gala itself.
.
"Are you sure we're allowed to wear gold?"
Axis gives Tredd an exasperated look. "You're worrying about this now?"
"We're not Chiefs!"
Sola rolls her eyes, keeping her head still as Nyx threads dozens of jeweled pins - gold and tanzanite, Sola really needs to thank the Ornata for making them on such short notice - into her hair to keep the elaborate, flower shaped braids in place.
She's not the only one wearing gems in her hair tonight, even if she has by far the most. They've all swapped out their usual wooden beads for gemstone equivalents - and pearls, in Tredd and Sola's cases. Libertus' hair is braided in a reverse braid down the center of his head, tanzanite and green onyx lining the sides.
If Sola isn't allowed to wear a ponytail, neither is Libertus, dammit!
Luche smacks Tredd's hands away from his jacket lapels. "Stop pulling at it, you'll crease the fabric, and I'm not saving you if you ruin Penny's hard work."
Tredd freezes, then glowers at Libertus when her husband laughs. "You're just as scared of her as I am."
"I know better than ta piss her off." With good reason. Penelopeia gets stab-happy when irritated and some of her pins are long.
Luche sighs as he straightens out Tredd's outfit. "Black is the restricted color in Lucian high society. Only the royal family and their Retinues are allowed to wear it at formal functions."
Even then, Papa, Noctis, Sola, and Libertus are wearing sable; the specific shade of black restricted to the royal family themselves.
Nyx pauses in scrutinizing his handiwork. "What about the Kingsglaive and Crownsguard uniforms then?"
"Same as the Retinue." Sola explains and she carefully tests the security of her braids. "They've sworn service to the King, and wear black and silver to reflect that. I'm neither the ruling monarch nor the Crown Heir, so I and my Retinue wear gold as a cadet branch."
"You are His Highness' Sword." Axis notes thoughtfully. "You could wear silver."
She could. It would be appropriate in Galahdian culture too - of any position in the Retinue it would be the Sword most deserving of that particular color. But Sola's not attending as Noctis' Sword tonight. She's attending as Princess, as the daughter of the King and as such she's wearing gold as tradition dictates.
It's also why she's wearing a Pyre-cursed dress instead of a suit like the rest of Noctis' Retinue.
Don't get her wrong. It's a beautiful dress and Penelopeia earned every last yen making it. Sable silk with golden embroidery, high waisted with flowing skirts and no sleeves on account of it being the end of August.
Sola would still rather wear pants.
"Hang on," Tredd says, "why does the King wear gold then?"
Sola deadpans. "He's the King. He can wear whatever he damn well wants."
Who's going to tell the King no?
"Where are we meeting Prince Noctis?" Libertus asks, testing the draw of the knife tucked in the top of his hose. The small blades that are part of Galahdian formal wear are ceremonial, barely the length of Sola's hand span from tip to hilt, and so elegantly decorated Sola could hang them on her wall as art. Of course, being Galahdian, the blades are just as serviceable in combat as any of their primary arms.
They don't expect to need them tonight, but Galahdian sensibilities and Sola's current condition mean all of them are going to wear them anyway.
"At the doors to the banquet hall." Sola wishes she could wear a weapon herself, but there's nowhere she can hide one and still easily access it given her current outfit. Not being able to use her magic for the next several months is going to drive her nuts. “Noctis will enter first with Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto, and we’ll follow after.”
It will allow them to pull attention from Noctis, rather than Noctis’ arrival pulling attention from them. It’s even following protocol, thank the Six for small mercies, because while Sola’s held the position of Noctis’ Sword for nearly two decades now, without the bond Ignis, Gladio, and now Prompto have with Noctis, Sola is still technically a Wayward Sword.
A fact the Court has yet to realize, but Sola has no doubts some will figure it out tonight.
Another reason for announcing her marriage. Hopefully it’ll keep the idiots distracted. Because if anyone seriously tries to Court Noctis for the ‘open’ position in his Retinue, Sola knows her brother will leave them bleeding out on the floor.
Not, Sola muses wryly, that she’ll react much differently. For the best she doesn’t have access to her weapons then.
She’ll have to settle for gutting them with words. She can do that.
Libertus eyes the smile pulling at red painted lips. “You’re sure about keeping your brother in the dark?”
“Only until tomorrow.” Sola replies. “A surprise birthday gift.”
Noctis will have enough to handle as is, and Sola’s job tonight is to ease the load not add to it. She’d rather Noctis focus on getting through the gala and subsequent ceremony than worry over Sola not being able to use her magic.
He’ll do enough worrying over the next several months. Even though he knows full well that Sola is fine. It’s normal for female Lucis Caelums. Sure, Sola was hoping it wouldn’t happen for another couple days, but she’s adjusted since losing her magic yesterday and she has a full Retinue to protect her if anyone manages to get past Aunt Tiz and Uncle Cor’s security.
And even then, Sola is not so far along she can’t defend herself. She’s never needed weapons or magic to kill a man.
Luche snorts. “You just want to see how many people you can shock at once.”
“Well… yeah.” It’s funny. “I’m hoping to make Uncle Cor faint. Again.” She was there when Aunt Tiz announced her pregnancy and Uncle Cor dropped like a sack of wet cement. Highlight of Sola’s week and made taking over as acting-Captain during Aunt Tiz’s bed rest and maternity leave completely worth it.
Sola doubts Noctis or Ignis will faint, but she’s hoping to get Gladio. Papa is unlikely to pass out learning he’s to be a grandfather again, and Sola doubts nothing will shock Uncle Clarus as much as meeting the Triplets and then Axis in the span of fifteen minutes.
Prompto is proving to be increasingly unflappable, but the blonde at least plays along so Sola can expect a reaction from him even if it’s half-faked. At least one of her fellow Retinue finds her funny.
She’s even taken steps to make sure no one catches on early. None of the dishes tonight contain anything that will set off Sola’s nausea and she’s going to be avoiding all the wine served except for the bare minimum sips required at the beginning of each course. Libertus and Axis will be sitting on either side her, and are prepared for some misdirection to help fool everyone into thinking she’s drinking more than she actually is, and them having her magic means they won’t get as drunk as they would otherwise. Having her Retinue close by the entire night will help prevent anyone with magic sense the changes - and even then Sola knows it’s only because Noctis and Regis’ magic doesn’t give them the same level of sense Sola and Dyn’s gold magic affords them.
Her adorable nephew sensed the changes in Sola shortly after Sola herself, and has since been sworn to silence. Dyn is rather gleeful in being in on the secret and is quite looking forward to surprising his father.
Of course, the scamp’s glee means that Noctis knows there is a secret, but he is indulging Dyn and Sola’s fun.
A knock before Crowe opens the door and pokes her head in. “His Highness is on the move.”
Libertus offers Sola his arm. “That’s our cue.”
Sola gets to her feet and takes it. Her Retinue arranges themselves around them. Nyx at the front, Luche on the right at Libertus’ side, Tredd at her left, and Axis bringing up the rear.
Sola grins, and knows it’s all teeth.
“Show time.”
